Because George has made a new promise that will alter the course of the rest of his life. And, with the help of a miraculous old woman named Grace, he assembles a ragtag bunch of aging strangers, determined to make their last days on earth--and his own--an adventure.

A New Take on Retirement and Death.......2007-09-03
This book presents a wonderfully nonconventional view of retirement and death. The crusty, self-reliant, octagenarian, Oregon farmer who is the main character is delightfully nonconventional -- and the fantasy amount of money he has to indulge his nonconventionality makes for an excellent story. Wonderful detailing like how he designs a home-made elevator for his "retirement home" gives great character to the story.
My all time favorite book.......2007-03-09
I've reread only 1 or 2 books in my life, but this is one book I think I can read many times. Our library doesn't own a copy of it anymore, so I was glad to be able to get a good used book from Amazon.
As an average boomer, I think about aging and how to do it gracefully, and without being a burden, but in a way where I can still enjoy my life even if it's limited. This book explores these issues in an entertaining and most important, memorable, way. I keep looking for another book by this author.
Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read ! ! ! ! .......2005-06-23
This book is incredible - I laughed, I cried and will continue to think about this story and it's characters for a long time. Mr. Kleiner should be busy writing more novels - he has a genuine talent for making his characters come alive. I hated to see this wonderful book come to an end. If only more people would think like the people in this story about life, old age and death, society would be a lot better off. An incredible story about unforgettable people who came alive off the pages. This truly is one of the best books I have ever read and that is really saying something! This portrays the circle of life better than any other book out there! This is a very deep and sensitive book - one to not be forgotten!
Didn't live up to expectations.......2004-01-28
I really wanted to like this book and it sounded sooo promising.
I love books about unusual people who don't do what is expected and strike out on their own for answers. But, there was never any satisfaction for the characters and me as the reader. I kept wanting George to find some peace, even if it was just the peace that comes from doing what's right for oneself. The book left me feeling like I had just enjoyed half a good meal and the rest of the meal was taken away. Satisfaction from completing the meal never set in.
Loved it!!!.......2002-12-06
Gregg is not only a wonderful author, but he is also my uncle. He is a wonderful uncle and when he first completed this book, I went down to his home, and stayed there for about a week at the time i was only 13 years old ( I think I was 13 somewhere close to that age anyway) I couldn't take my eyes off of the print. I loved the way the he described everything so clearly, that it was if you could really see the events unfolding in your mind. I loved how he made me laugh and he made me cry. I think it was a wonderful book, and I can't wait till he finishes another one. I love my uncle with all of my heart, and I don't just say that i loved his book because he is my uncle i say I loved it because i really did, and i think its time to read it again!!!

a brillian book.......2007-08-31
Great book, a MUST read if you're trying to discover more of how much God loves you. This book explains an in depth explanation of God's love for you. Brilliant book.
Love Beyond Reason.......2007-03-28
This is a wonderful book that really depicts God's love for every individual. A must read by John Ortberg!
Amazing.......2006-08-01
This book is amazing. I've read it slowly because I want to savor every word. I've been a Christian for a long time and usually I don't like sugar-coated Christianity, but the way this book talks about God's love really humbled me and made me realize the vastness of God's grace. This book discusses God's tremendous unconditional love and encourages us to have that same kind of love for others. One thing Ortberg said that stood out is, as I grow closer to God, am I becoming more approachable (more loving) or less approachable (legalistic and judgemental)? Really made me think about how gracious I am (or not) toward others. I've recommended this book to all my friends.
Awesome!.......2006-03-27
After having read several of Ortberg's books, I would have to say this is the one that really touched me.
John's gift for storytelling is simply wonderful. He starts the book by discussing our raggedness - but that is hardly the end of the story. He goes on to tell us how the greatness of God heals and redeems us - again and again. He uses biblical depictions that are rich in detail and apply to our lives today.
My favorite chapters were "The Lord of the Second Chance" and "The Roundabout Way."
In "The Lord of the Second Chance," Ortberg gives a detailed account of Peter's great failure and how Jesus restored him. It is a very touching depiction, rich in detail and emotionality.
In "The Roundabout Way," he explains that God is not as concerned with the journey as he is "who" we will be when we arrive at our destination. He discusses the possible reasons for the roundabout way, suffering and how this journey can bring us into a closer relationship with God. From my own experience in the "roundabout way," I can honestly say that I see things much more clearly now.
Another chapter that I found very provoking was the chapter on Grace and how even we, as Christians, sometimes forget that we need to extend grace to others as freely as God has extended it to us.
I have read this book over and over and plan to give it as a gift to several of my friends and family. I highly recommend it!!!
Rag Dolls unite. .......2004-12-01
We are all rag dolls. As the previous reviewer says, there is vast power in these titles by John Ortberg for the new Christian. Recent converts will be able to grasp concepts about love, both Our Father's love for us and our love for each other, stated in a dynamic and powerful way. It is hard to love everyone and some people in our life are really difficult. It could be our boss, a family member or a friend that doesn't pass the "easy to love" test. But Mr. Ortberg tells us why this is exactly what we need to do, so we can be in harmony with our Father's vast and unthinkable love for us. Mr. Ortberg's talent is that he explains these concepts in a way that will make sense to a newby or a seasoned believer.

love beyond reason.......2007-01-05
I enjoy all of sandra brown books . This was a very good.
Read it at the beach.......2005-11-27
As many love stories' books this one start with a thrilling story of an "abducted" baby. After a few pages the main story drowns to oblivion and you'll only read about the love story and you wouldn't care about the "abduction". So the love story is good enough to keep you reading but don't expect any thrilling plot at any part of the book. You can read this book at once in a long flight or at the beach.
Go ahead, if you have nothing better to read..........2005-06-28
I guess I fall somewhere in the middle on this one. It was okay, I liked it until the trailer scene. ...the enjoyment ended there. I love romance novels, so don't get me wrong. But even as romance novels go, this one was just a bit flat.
I have read over 20 of Sandra Browns books, and about half of them were great, half not. Usually because there was a lack of excitement, or because the characters contradicted themselves. The almost rape in this one was good. It spiced it up, made it exciting. But that's as good as it gets.
It might have been nice if they did have to actually battle it out with the grandparents, or if Katherine would have left after having found out about Jace's ex-wife and catching them in what looked like a compromising position. Her running off with the baby again would have made it exciting. Or she could have ran off when Jace left without a word for two days to go rescue his ex-wife, she should have been gone when he returned. But alas, none of that happened. Katherine just kept taking it. She was a total walking contradiction. As I said, the story is flat and predictable. The so called explosion at the end was just a stupid cop-out way to end the story. So I wouldn't break my neck to run out and buy this one. Read only if you have nothing better to do.
LOVED IT!.......2005-06-09
This has to be one of my absoulte favorites! I loved the storyline. I thought it was creative and inventive. Their romance was hot and steamy and I loved Jace. He took to baby Allison and I thought it was great when he referred to himself as Daddy when speaking to her. I loved it!
Not very realistic but okay for an afternoon read.......2004-04-14
In my opinion, for Katherine to have taken such drastic measures to protect her niece, Allison, she trusted Jace Manning way to much. Personally, if this was reality, the moment Jace knocked on the door, I would have collected the baby and went running. But even being fiction, the quick first kiss, his moving in, the marriage, was a bit much. Then the fact that the grandparents are pretty much dropped from the story line was pretty disappointing. I was expecting a little more especially after their wayword son, Jace, was the center of the fiasco. Okay book, if you need something to do for an afternoon.
Book Description
After a terrible motorcycle accident, doctors told Leone Nunley that her son David was in a "persistent coma and vegetative state"--the same diagnosis faced by Terri Schiavo's family. Fighting for David is the story of Leone's courageous battle for David's life and his family's fight to help him overcome many of his disabilities. (Remarkably, David can now speak, walk with the aid of a walker, and with the help of a caregiver, live in his own home.) After witnessing this amazing--if less-than-perfect--outcome, Leone is uniquely qualified to help readers understand why even "imperfect" life has value and why faith and persistence can be more powerful than a doctor's diagnosis.
Customer Reviews:
Love in it's purest form.......2006-11-03
Even a miracle needs a hand! Leone Nunley did not waste her suffering. With love and support from her family and community, Leone turned a tragedy into a miracle. "Fighting for David" witnesses that "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, `move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing is impossible for you." (Mat 17:20). I am a mother of four year old Kyli who is considered profoundly brain injured. We have set out to do what Leone and her patterning team did for David. David and Leone's story has strengthened our resolve and validated our belief that our child can and will reach her fullest potential with the love of others. A hurt brain does not mean a broken spirit, and all spirits deserve a chance to be set free. The journey of one life has the potential to touch so many, in ways beyond our comprehension. David's spirit is whole and his purpose, extraordinary. What's especially moving is that those who helped David experienced that in giving they in turn received. That's love in its purest form.
A Mother's Healing Power.......2006-08-10
Not only a wonderful read, but such an inspirational family story of the true power of love and dedication. Doctors are limited to science and their human skills; the smart ones admit that a mother's love, dedication and prayers (family and friends, too) can achieve unbelievable results. Leone and David's story was such a joy to read, discovering that it had one of the happier endings.
This should be required reading!.......2006-06-26
This book gives hope to all who wonder if there is life beyond the diagnosis of "persistent vegetative state." Together Leone and David have proven that it is possible, with hard work and the grace of God, to become once again a contributing member of society. This book should be required reading in all medical schools across the country.
Faith in Action.......2006-05-06
This is an easy-to-read story of high interest. It is wonderful to see what God can do when we turn to Him for direction and hope in life's most hopeless situations. Anyone will have their faith renewed by reading this book and will be able to identify with Leone when they put themselves into the impossible situations they have faced. How we face them makes all the difference in the world. We highly recommend this book for all.

Incredible book!.......2006-04-25
This is one of the most incredible books I have ever read. It is a deeply moving story of heartache and courage, of brokenness and beauty, of lost dreams and new dreams. When I came to the last page, I didn't want the story to end-and in many ways it hasn't. Fighting for David has encouraged my heart, and I believe it will have a profound impact on the life of every person who reads it.

The Best Advice.......2006-02-23
I think this book was the best. I loved the stories and found the stories the author selected to be very interesting. I'm sure she has heard almost everything in her career. The stories were not judgemental and let you draw your own conclusion. It was refreshing to not be told what is wrong with you and how you should fix it! The way the book is written gives you hope that there is a special person out there just for you. I love this book!
Great Read!.......2006-02-23
I saw Andreah on a local television program and purchased the book. I felt the stories were compelling and thought provoking. Sharing the lessons learned from the people in the book helped me through a difficult situation I was in. This is sage advice with some Psychic and Spiritual wisdom thrown in. These are the things your mother should have told you and you should have listened!
Waste of Money.......2006-02-01
I saw the author on our local TV station and thought that the book would have more reasons why people feel the way they do due to past life, etc. The book was mostly common sense that our mothers taught us. It was a complete waste of my money.

Customer Reviews:
Teachers and being out.......2005-09-24
I liked this but I think I've generally discovered a love of romance novel type lesbian fiction. Interesting story. Situations that strike me as kind of real that people would face. The book also referenced a teacher. And educators are interesting to read about because that one seems like an area where it would be really scarey to be out. I've been rereading this one a bit.
Herring is Hot..........2005-08-08
If you're looking for a sweet romance with implied sex scenes, stop reading right now and find something else to read. If you're looking for love at first sight, steamy sex, and angst, this is the book for you.
Trina had been disowned by her immediate family (parents and brother) after coming out to them as a teen. She subsequently moved in with her lesbian Aunt Rosalie and her gay roommate Juanito, who accepted her for who she was. After moving out on her own, Trina began visiting her parents' home on Christmas morning each year. They treated her horribly every time. One year, she met her brother's fiancee Rosalie. Rosalie didn't understand the hatred, contacted Trina to discuss the wedding, and they became fast friends and more. Rosalie leaves her fiance to be with Trina, but Trina doesn't trust her motives. All hell breaks loose as a result. Things get really strange when Trina's brother needs a kidney and she is the best match.
The book opens with a hot scene when Rosalie meets Trina in her hotel room. The story is told through a series of flashbacks. I normally don't like this approach, but Herring handles it well and keeps it interesting. The author is masterful at mixing animal attraction with real romance. These characters are well-developed, deep, and likable. It's hard to NOT get too involved in this story.
Highly recommended. This one will stay on my bookshelf for years to come.
Another Great Book.......2003-11-30
I've read Peggy Herring before and I like her work. Essentially, this story is the "not-so-straight-girl pursues the doesn't-trust-anyone lesbian," but it is well told and not cheesy. I actually believed the story and had an easy time picturing the characters and events. As usual, I couldn't put the book down until I was finished.
decent book.......2003-11-14
I have mixed emotions about this book. On one hand, it really irritated me. There was too much sex, and not enough romance. Trina & Rosalie couldn't have a serious conversation without groping each other. Several issues were left unresolved. The book also moved WAY too fast. There was no in-depth description of their courtship, it just jumped straight into the sex. The ending really bothered me. It was unrealistic, and it reminded me of a bad movie of the week.
On the other hand, this book was oddly appealing. It had some good humor, and once I got past the flaws, I actually started to like the book. The relationship between Trina & her parents really tugged at my heartstrings. I think that's the most memorable part of this book for me. All in all, the book was fairly decent. Not my favorite, but still enjoyable.
If you like romance you'll like this.......2003-09-27
Beyond All Reason won't make you pause to savor a phrase or wipe away tears of empathy or even think much about it after you finish the last page. But it will make you chuckle, sigh and relax. It's a great escape beach book and I think there's a place in life for reads like this! There are lots of times I don't want a gut-wrenching emotional read that I dwell on for days after (I still can't get scenes from Karin Kallmaker's Maybe Next Time out of my head and it's been two weeks now) and Peggy Herring can really soothe and let me just enjoy. Trina's family are absolutely rotten to her because she's gay, and Trina's way of handling it is a lesson in wit and tenacity!

The white man is on his cross again........2006-08-08
I hate to make this a race thing, but this novel is about race in many ways. This is the tale of what Rush Limbaugh thought the world would be like in 1993 if the "Feminazis" and "Affirmative Action" supporters had had their way. I'm speaking in the past tense because even a few years have not been kind to this book.
Until I read this book, I'd never read a dystopian novel that I didn't like. So if you're considering buying this book out of a love for greats like "1984," "The Wanting Seed," "A Brave New World" and "We," save your money and your time. This book is nothing more than WASPy white male posturing and victimhood that's as stale as listening to your Republican father drone on about illegal immigration.
In its attempt to be politically incorrect (ooh, there's some fresh turf for an aspiring writer!), this book just comes off bitter and annoyingly irresponsible. Throughout, and as a means of expositing the past, the author quotes great civil rights thinkers like Martin Luther King and James Baldwin at their most radical, juxtaposing it with quotes from the one-dimensional characters of his own creation in an attempt to make the already-belabored point that everyone who isn't white or male has nothing but contempt for the white male and seeks nothing else but to exact revenge upon him for decades and centuries of "exaggerated" historical wrongs.
Isn't it funny how people of this mindset always decry "minorities" for not "taking personal responsibility for their own actions" while simultaneously reveling in self-pity for their own race? Oh, no! We'll be outnumbered by the year 2030! The Democrats are giving our jobs away to [...] black immigrant Jews! These are the thoughts that keep the author of this book awake at night in the sodden mattress of his studio apartment that has not been seen by female eyes in this millenia.
It's not just a political and cultural problem I have with this book, either. It's also poorly written and it takes a particularly nasty attitude towards its (few) female characters while at the same time engaging in juvenile humor and what I can only guess was supposed to be wit and wry humor.
The novel, taken as a whole, reads like the drunken meanderings of Mel Gibson on the side of the road in Malibu after half a bottle of tequila and a cursory reading of "The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion." I've been known myself to indulge in watching a movie I know is badly made and horribly acted, but this book taught me that fighting your way through the literary equivalent of "Red Dawn" just isn't possible.
Skip it, skip it, skip it. How this novel got put on somebody's list next to "A Clockwork Orange" is more than your friend and humble narrator can viddy all on his oddy knocky, O my brothers.
Decent story paired with poor delivery.......2006-07-18
I like the idea, but the book's consistently poor grammar was bad enough to be distracting and to detract from the story. Not worth your money.
1984's thought control, today's reasons for it.......2006-05-01
This book has many similarities to Orwell's 1984: the never-ending and fabricated war, the oppressive police state with as many guns turned inward as towards enemies outside, the long slow slide into universal poverty, and the government's abolition of all culture from the world before. It even has the Winston Smith of this story, Liam, working for the government office in charge of editing history into a version more favorable to the current regime.
Despite the similarities, this is a wholly different book. Wilson's totalitarian regime bases its oppression not on the eternal war, but on racial "equality" - a code word for a new, mandated inequality. This is Wilson's view of political correctness gone mad, ironically becoming the hate machine against which it rebelled in the first place. And, in the end, Wilson holds out a trace of hope that Orwell denied to his readers.
The book gets off to a rocky start, with an improbable case of mistaken identity. It also gets a bit shrill in places. It makes its point, though, that the threats to freedom come in many forms, often claiming to be a greater good than freedom or even to be freedom itself. That's why Orwell's 1984 needs to be rewritten again and again - the story doesn't change, but the threats to a free society do. Each time needs to hear the story again, but rephrased in terms of that time's own dangers.
//wiredweird
Scary and compelling.......2004-07-12
This is a book that takes a daring proposition ("How to criticize political correctness without coming across as raving, mean, or spiteful") and turns it into a sci-fi fiction thriller that keeps up a quick pace without losing its anti-utopian vision.
A previous reviewer did a good job of giving a plot summary so I'll skip that part. Suffice it to say, the story doesn't always play nice and sensitive types might be offended by the underlying theme, but I would say that it is still a very good read (despite a few minor typos). Certainly there's nothing like it out there right now. You might be challanged but you won't be sorry you read it. Keep an open mind and check it out.
I'd give it 5 stars for creativity and 4 for the story/plot.
Multiculturalism meets George Orwell.......2004-06-17
This book is a welcome addition to a long and illustrious line of dystopian fiction in the vein of Brave New World, 1984, and Fahrenheit 451.
This is an important work highlighting the risk we face when any aspect of governmental power becomes un-criticizable. For instance, today the worst thing that could happen to a politician would be to be tagged with the epithet "racist." Therefore when government acts in the name of anti-racism it is near impervious to most any objection, as anyone who would complain is labelled as a narrow-minded bigot. And so, unfettered by criticism, it's power grows.
Scott Wilson takes this observation to its ultimate extreme by creating a dystopian totalitarian nation founded upon the ideal of anti-racism. His heroes, fleeing persecution, are not Nazi sympathizers but are Average Joes struggling against a tyranny that wears a false-face of compassion. In doing this Mr. Wilson is able to expose and criticize this absolutist regime without coming across as a racist himself. Let's hope this book receives the attention it deserves and serves as the impetus to a new dialogue on race and government in the USA and Europe.

Book Description
The circumstances that led to the creation of this play were connected with the First International Symposium on Anarchism at Lewis and Clark College (Portland, Oregon) in February of 1980.
We had already approved a list of films to be shown, a series of art reproductions to be exhibited and a music program to be performed. But we still needed a theatrical work. Research in the field of anarchist-inspired plays had produced numerous titles, but all of them had to be discarded one by one due to some "defects": an excess of characters, a lack of English translations, and a negative tone in their texts.
It was thus proposed, at one of the weekly meetings in 1979, that we would try to write an original play ourselves.
When the deadline arrived, we had only two plays to choose from: Howard Zinn' s Emma, and my own Iphigenia in utopia. None of them were selected by the reading committee: Zinn's play, inspired by and dedicated to the memory of Emma Goldman, did not suit our purposes due to the historically correct but psychologically negative impact that inevitably would have confronted the audience with the sad problem of violence in the anarchist tradition.
The present play was rejected because it was too long. According to Dr. Willis and the cast of the Theater Department, one month of rehearsal was insufficient preparation for the performance).
The committee, overall, did not like this play either. If two of the members were enthusiastic, another one noticed many inaccuracies in the comparison of my characters with those of the Greek tradition, while another colleague considered that I was "agonizing too much over the problem of violence". In his opinion, anarchism, after all, was a revolutionary movement. The conclusion was that since there was only one month remaining, it was too late to perform a play, so the theatrical program was reduced to a dramatic reading of a one-act play. Retrospectively, it occurs to me that perhaps my goal in writing this play the way I did was not realized or not clear enough. A creative work is never completely objective, even though it is based on a classical character who has no shadows.
Ever since Euripides, many authors have dealt with Iphigenia very differently. Some make her die, a victim of sacrifice. Others make her survive and the designated victim being is replaced at the last moment by a providential animal. I wanted to make her an anarchist who is revolting against Fate, against paternalism, against superstition, against violence, against tradition, against the clergy and against the reasons of state that called for her death. The example was suggested to me by a friend, a true princess in real life, who was destined by her father (a real king) to marry another king for reasons of state and who, without being an anarchist, refused the arrangement simply because she did not love her suitor. Whether or not she was already in love with the man whom she ended up marrying, despite the fact that he was a divorced, merely bourgeois (not aristocrat) man who was probably even a Jew (she is a Roman Catholic), it took courage and a strong personality to behave like this in real life.
I transformed Orestes and Pilades into co-conspirators, into liberators of people (they run an underground non-violent guerrilla). My revolutionary characters make statements that I borrowed from Sacco and Vanzetti's letters, as well as a declaration taken from the Haymarket Affair's trial proceedings. Yes, I violated history, geography, and tradition, but so did Jean Racine and many others before or after him when dealing with the character of Iphigenia. I uncovered several hundred plays, poems, ballets, operas, paintings, frescoes, drawings and films inspired by Iphigenia. A large number of them abandon and/or "betray" the tradition as much as I did.
The genius of the great creators of myths, whether religious, literary or otherwise, is such that any deviation from their message should be interpreted as a variant, as an echo, as an homage, not merely imitation, or worse, treason. Anyway, who says that if Euripides had lived in our times, he would have revered the cruel Gods of tradition?
Or, living in the 20th Century, would he not imagine a feminist, committed, active and rebellious Iphigenia, such as I did myself?

Complex and Dry, But Good Info.......2006-06-07
Body, Mind and Soul: Kabbalah on Human Physiology, Disease and Healing is by the noted rabbi and chassidic kabbalist, Rabbi Yitzchak Ginsburgh (of inner.org) and published by Dwelling Place Publishers.
The concept behind this book is to lay out the kabbalist framework of health and, G-d forbid, it's opposite, disease. It discusses in depth and in detail, how is the body energized (how G-dly energy is received by and flows through the body), and how certain symptoms related to certain problems associated with it. And of course, potentially that leads to understanding certain spiritual corrections that need to be made, thereby leading to healing.
And it's great, in concept. As a practical matter, the book requires at least an intermediate level of kabbalah or chassidic understanding, and is written like a college textbook. The presentation is dry and technical, making it a hard read and more useful as a reference book than a topical review.
If you've got some serious kabbalah background and are looking for a book to research specific health issues, you may find it useful in pinpointing spiritual problems (note I didn't say resolving them). Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it.
