Book Description

He walked up all close to me, and I remember he smelled so sweet -- like love without sex. From his soft, clean, honey-colored face to the milky white of his teeth, this man caught ahold of my heart and yanked it straight through my body. It was a wonderful feelin' -- natural and dark. And it only got sweeter when he told me that I could come to one of his parties and see his "family" for myself . . . I hadn't ever thought 'bout bein' a ho before, but I did want to do whatever could keep me close to that man standin' in front of me.

In the tradition of Sister Souljah, Sapphire, and Paul Beatty comes a stunning new voice in fiction, Monique W. Morris, and her novel, Too Beautiful for Words.

Peaches was a good high school girl until she met Jesus, the pimp who turned her out. They had a child named Jason, who was raised in a group home. Now a young man with a son of his own, Jason meets Chinaka, a former Black Panther who had befriended Peaches. Just as she tried to rescue his mother, Chinaka sets her sights on Jason, who is looking to get into the family business.

In stark, moving prose, Monique W. Morris brings us into the lives of Peaches, Jesus, Jason, and Chinaka, whose words capture with exquisite honesty the brutality and humanity of the streets. They will resound in your mind long after you've closed the book.

5 out of 5 stars Too Beautiful for Words.......2007-01-10

While a somewhat difficult read, I loved the first-person narrative. The characters became real to me because they "spoke" in their personal dialect. The plot was unpredictable enough to keep me on board - never bored - to the end. I had to remind myself that this was fiction - it felt so real!

3 out of 5 stars DEEP - MOTIVATING STORY.......2004-12-18

Too beautiful for words was a very good book with a very important message. This book brings up several topics that are of importance to the black community. I gave this book 3 stars because of the unnecssary rambling of each character but the storyline was great and a necessary read for young adults! I look forward to reading many more books from this author.

5 out of 5 stars Classic .......2004-10-10

I agree that this is an instant classic. It is a must read. It had me crying, mad, happy, and on edge. All of the characters were well developed, and I enjoyed reading about all of them. Definitely one to recommend to others.

5 out of 5 stars Too Beautiful.......2004-09-10

This book is an instant classic. A beautifully written tale of the struggle of underadvantaged urban life. The story is inspired by an equally well written song, by Boots Riley and the Coup, "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Grenada Last Night." If you liked the book, you should definitely check out the song, it is on either the album "Steal This Album" or on "Steal This Double Album." Its like this novel in poetry instead of prose.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2004-08-08

Too Beautiful For Words is a beautiful written story about Peaches, Jesus and Jason that has a strong message about pimps drugs and prostitution. Great job Ms. Morris looking forward to your next novel.

I really enjoyed this book. Both stories were great but I especially loved the story of Corrigan and Dorie. I really hope Diana Palmer writes the story of the remaining brothers.

It was good reading. It also makes you hope that she will write something in the future relating to the three remaining bachelor brothers.

4 out of 5 stars Typical Diana Palmer.......2005-09-20

This is a book with four short stories in it. The Joan Johnston ones are boring and not worth reading. My advice for the doctor who finds a pregnant woman crying in a closet - leave her there. The two Palmer ones are unrealistic in thier plots, but are fun to read. They are written in typical Diana Palmer style. If you like her style, then these two stories are for you.

          3 out of 5 stars :|.......2001-02-17

I have to admit that I was disappointed with this book. The stories were supposed to be short and sweet, but to short in my opinion. I specifically bought this book because I love the Hawk's Way series and wanted to read A Hawk's Way Christmas. This featured Rolleen Whitlaw, one of Zach and Rebecca's adopted children. Also featured is Galvin Talbot who was first introduced to us in Rolleen's sister Jewel's story 'The Virgin Groom.' In this book we learn that Galvin is a widowed father and Rolleen is an unwed pregnant woman afraid to tell her parents the truth. Rolleen and Gavin decide to pretend to be engaged over Christmas. Rolleen figures at least that way Christmas is not spoiled for her family. Gavin also has his reasons for helping Rolleen. The whole story covers about a two week period. I love the Whitelaws and was disappointed that there was not more to this story. I still would not have missed reading this story about another Whitelaw child.

The rest of the stories are short and sweet as well. For a short story they were still good. I loved reading about Stony in 'Taming the Lone Wolf.' The best parts were when he interacted with Rose. I thought that it was hilarious when Rose told Stony that she did not like him and he said thats okay because I don't like you either. Of course, Stony ends up falling in love with her.

If you have no expectations for in-depth stories, if you go into this book expecting short stories than you will probably enjoy reading this book by two great authors.

3 out of 5 stars These Texan Men Come Alive.......2000-02-02

I really enjoyed Stony Carlton in "Taming the Lone Wolf." The electricity flies in this story, although the heroine switches from gutsy to helpless a little too much for me... but give me a man like Stony - yum! I also like Hank, our football pro turned ZZTop band leader - what a contrast! In Diana Palmer's "Redbird," these two thrown together by mistake have a relationship that is sweet fantasy, although I have no idea how she didn't give in (Diana Palmer's two heroines don't consummate their relationships without a wedding ring). But, who would name their daughter, Poppy? I had a tough time with that. Quick reads, all four, enjoyable!

This is a great anthology but what you are not told is these stories are all reprints from the early 90's.

Mitch Ryan is a rich business executive who spends most of his time working. One thing that is close to Mitch's heart is The Lone Star Social Club. It is an old house that means a lot to Mitch's family so he bought it and turned it into apartments of which his Aunt is in charge. Unfortunately, his Aunt is needed elsewhere so Mitch needs to go to San Antonio to watch over the place. The last thing Mitch expects to find are a woman and two small children trying to move into an apartment to which they have no claim.

Phoebe Smith has just gotten custody of her niece and nephew and now they have kicked her out of her apartment. Phoebe wants the best for her brother's kids because they are all she has left since her brother and his wife died. Phoebe loves the Social Club and jumped at the ad to rent an apartment there. Phoebe had no idea the ad and the man behind it were a scam. To make matters worse, Phoebe just lost her job due to cutbacks. The last that Phoebe expected was to have Mitch come to the rescue. He offers her a temporary job and he lets her and the kids share his Aunt's apartment with him. Phoebe accepts Mitch's offer thinking that she no longer has to panic. Phoebe's hopes are short lived when she finds herself falling for Mitch and the panic sets in again.

Phoebe and Mitch could have a wonderful future together, but first Mitch has to be willing to admit that what he is feeling is love. Mitch has never thought of love as anything more than a four-letter word. Watching the mighty Mitch fall is fun, and he not only falls for Phoebe, but for the kids too.

4 out of 5 stars THE LONELY STAR........2005-03-02

In the beginning, Jane miller and her family moved to Corpus Christi from Chicago because of something her father did. They are Jews and all Jane is trying to do is fit in with the other kids at school, the principal tries to spank her but she asks for her father to be called before he passes her punishment. Jane's family is a Jewish family and they have rules and laws according to how they conduct their daily lives. Then the heat incenses when their grandfather visits and she has a Christmas tree hidden in her closet! A Christian symbol in a Jewish home goes against all their rules. Then another fear comes into perspective. Jeff, Jane's brother can't go to college because his father can't afford to send him to college even though he has good grades! In my opinion, his father shouldn't have done what he did to ruin their lives. I would give this book **** stars because it was interesting and explained all the Jewish troubles and ways.

                5 out of 5 stars A awesome book.......2001-10-19

A surprising good book.If you think everyone is alike in the world this book will work for you.If you like your religon and doesn't matter what other religons are you will probably like this book.

                4 out of 5 stars Lone Star.......2001-02-23

The book that I read was called Lone Star because I think that describes the way that she feltwhen she moved to Texas. Lone Star is a good book. It's not really great but it's not really bad either. The author did a goo job in writhing the story and the main character Jane had a lot of problems that the author pointed out really well. The only problem with the book is that the chapters a too short. If I were to compare this book to any others, then I would have to say that some of the Harry Potter books would work. Harry is different from some of the other witches and wizards but Harry still tries to become friendswith them. The same goes for Jane except that shes not a witch and the only thing different from her and the others is her religion. I liked this book and the reasons are because it was well wriiten, the storyline was good, some of the characters seemed a little mean, but they seemed to add to the story. I would give this book a for out of 5 star rating for all of the good parts of the story

                4 out of 5 stars Lone Star.......2001-02-23

Lone Star was a great book. I love the way the author described the life of poor old Jane. Her parents costantly fight and her grandfather is REALLY religious. She has a lot of trouble making new friend, but she finally does and is happy! I like the book and would recommed the book to anyone who thinks that everybody are alike.

3 out of 5 stars A boring, and interesting book.......2000-02-18

Lone Star was not a very good book. It had some good parts, though. It was kind of boring, with few exciting parts. The book was mainly about Jane and her settling into her new town and confronting people about her religion. On scale of one to ten I rate this book a seven. If you like exciting books, don't read this one. The book was good at times because it showed how difficult it was for some people of different religions. Jane had to struggle to be proud of her religion when everybody else was a different and she wanted to be like them. Lone Star was pretty good at showing how difficult it is to want to be like everyone else. This book isn't like any other book I've read, it was very unique. So I have to give it credit for that. I thought it was creative though for the author and how she made the plot. The plot was about a young Jewish girl trying to fit in a Christian town, and she is being forced to face her differences and tries to be like others around her when her Grandpa is forcing her to realize that she is different and has to be proud of her religion. The story was always misleading, it would build up to something big to happen and it never would. It seemed as though it would have a bigger ending, but it didn't. Although, the author was very descriptive of the characters and the surroundings. This book is more of a serious book discussing about religion and diversity. If you like books that are serious, than this is a good book for you. To me, I found it boring, but that's just my opinion.

                    4 out of 5 stars A fun action/adventure.......2001-08-24

FRONTIER WORLDS is one of the most entertaining EDAs that I've read. It's a fairly standard runaround with a relatively unambitious plot, but it's so well written that we can forgive it that. The characters and their adventures are built up very convincingly, making this book feel above the average output of the BBC line.

This is the first book in which Compassion reads more like a companion than a grumpy, faceless, arc-related plot-device. Fitz also comes across quite well, and the adventures of the two companions separated from the Doctor make for very worthwhile reading. Peter Anghelides has really brought to life two companions who had started to slip into blandness in the preceding books. Their interaction suddenly made the two of them appear like real people, rather than just generic characters hanging out inside the TARDIS. Telling much of the story from Fitz's point of view raised the book from a fairly standard runaround to an interesting story told with a lot of wit.

The Doctor is not present for a significant portion of the adventure, though the scenes he is present for are rather enjoyable. For once, he seems mostly in charge and actually appears to know what's going on around him. This is such a refreshing change after so many of the previous books in which the Doctor is removed from the plot (sometimes by other characters, sometimes by the author) and contributes almost nothing to the story. Although Fitz and Compassion get more on-screen time, the lack of active involvement by the Doctor doesn't diminish the appearances that he does have. He's charming, witty, easily distracted, intelligent and resourceful - everything that the Eighth Doctor has the potential to be.

A lot of what I have praised the book for sounds rather simplistic. It's the execution of these simple ideas that makes the book as delightful as it is. It doesn't shake up the Doctor Who world beyond all recognition, but it is a very fun book that tells an entertaining tale. It's a simple story, but it feels fresh and new. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The universe is not enough!.......2000-12-16

This Doctor Who novel starts off in the manner of a Bond movie - the Doctor performing daredevil stunts whilst pursued by hired grunts on skis. There are even blood-red fisheyes. The only thing missing is the theme music, although the adrenaline of the prose more than makes up for it.

The TARDIS has been drawn to the planet Drebnar, home of the Frontier Worlds Corporation. The Doctor is determined to find out why, and so Compassion and Fitz become employees of Frontier Worlds. Whilst Compassion dedicates her time to spying on the company, Fitz dedicates his to spying on and seducing his female coworkers. But the TARDIS crew are not the only aliens to have landed on Drebnar. Before he knows it, the Doctor has become embroiled within a corporate plot of Frankenstein proportions, which even involves Frank Sinatra, seemingly back from the dead. Unless he succeeds, an entire system could be wiped out by human folly...

Following in the wake of Lawrence Miles' Interference, this is another very topical Doctor Who novel. The debate about what we eat and how it is produced is currently at the heart of our culture. Anghelides has displaced the debate by setting it on an alien planet. However, Drebnar is not exactly unlike Earth, and it could be possible to argue that the author has revealed a great lack of imagination by not bothering to provide much of an alien environment. Possible, but futile. Much of Drebnar's fun derives from the fact that it is so much like Earth. Okay, so this scenario is quite improbable, but since when has that been a handicap to Doctor Who? Especially when the Doctor has foes that delight in such paradoxes...

I suppose the television story which most resembles this is The Seeds of Doom. There's certainly the same amount of vegetation involved, and the Doctor's just as ready with his fists as Tom Baker was in that story (always a surprising scene, but then Seeds was written by Robert Banks Stewart, who later created Bergerac). To his credit, Anghelides makes no reference to The Seeds of Doom, and instead concentrates on telling his own story, which is highly compelling and very witty. This book is a joy to read. The characterisation is superb. Before Frontier Worlds, I've hated the very mention of Fitz Kreiner, because he was so flat and insipid. Why would I want to transport myself into adventure with such a wet blanket? A towel may be crucial to your average intergalactic hitchhiker, but a wet blanket is such a drag. But what Anghelides has managed to do seems impossible: he has breathed life into Fitz, given him new vibrancy. Anghelides does this by having much of the novel narrated by Fitz in the first person, and in doing so performs miracles. It's a device that works incredibly well here, and harks back to the very first Doctor Who book, when David Whitaker presented the Doctor's exciting adventure with the Daleks through the eyes of Ian Chesterton. It also helps that Fitz and Compassion are given jobs with Frontier Worlds: many readers will readily identify with the TARDIS crew's workplace experiences. Peter Anghelides too has developed his style considerably from Kursaal, and I shall be awaiting the next installment from his pen with a great deal of impatience.

4 out of 5 stars A lot going on at Frontier Worlds.......2000-03-26

Peter Anghelides improved himself, to me, since his last book Kursaal. The only problems I had was the fact that the TARDIS crew was in the middle of a melee at the start of the book, but things did catch up about 40 pages later. After that moment, things did pick up to where the story wrapped up nicely.

Compassion seems to have loosened up, but who is to say that it was all an act. I did like the characterization of Compassion and knowing that she can be just as "human" who makes mistakes like the rest of us.

If you liked/loved or disliked Kursaal, you might enjoy this book.

America's Religions: From Their Origins To The Twenty-First Century by Peter W. Williams (Distinguished Professor of Comparative Religions and American Studies, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio) is a massive, comprehensive, meticulous study of the religious movements that have shaped the United States and ranges from Native American religions and early European colonization era communities of faith to the religious modernism and pluralism of the twentieth century. Divided into fifty-five chapters, the scholarly narrative path traces a long road across centuries of human belief. America's Religions is a fascinating read and a sweeping historical analysis which is very highly recommended for History Of Religion supplemental reading lists and reference collections.
