Book Description

With dark, knife-in-the ribs humor and poignant glimpses of youth and early adulthood, Gwendolyn Zepeda's first book is the literati's version of television variety shows of the 1970s. Chock full of sharp observations in a narrative that jumps from personal essay to a parody of romance novels to inventive fiction, this collection spans a wide range of themes: the complications of being a "half-white child of hippies born in Houston in 1971" and raised in a largely Mexican barrio . . . "How to Be a Trailer Trash Housewife" . . . and a midnight dance with a giant cockroach.

Though her creations aren't easy to behold, they are assertive, calling out Zepeda's own lessons learned as she strives to hammer out a life. She writes in "To the Last Man I Slept with and to Everybody Else," a variation on the title story, "You wanted to be the rock star, the ninja, the cowboy in black. I wanted to be with those people so I pretended they were you. But secretly, I have always been all of those things."

Weaving her exploration of family life, love, the struggle for economic stability, and the search for a personal creative space, Zepeda's brash voice cuts at society's stereotypes, at once critiquing those around her and herself. Family, friends, and the unwitting strangers around her—no one is safe from her commentary.

Not for the shy or the meek, Zepeda's bold ruminations ring clearly through all her pieces, whether tough dramatizations or tongue-in-cheek fiction. She debuts a voice worth hearing that challenges, "If you want to, you can watch."

5 out of 5 stars truth par excellence.......2006-03-15

I went to a local bookstore hoping to buy this book for a friend. When they told me it was already out of print, I was thoroughly annoyed. How can something this good be out of print?

If you've ever felt out of place at school, if you've ever wanted to be with someone special instead of being someone special, if you've ever been ashamed of your relatives, if you've ever wanted to revere your relatives, if you've ever been broke, this book is for you.

If not, then read this book anyway. It'll do ya good!

Intelligent, thought provoking, hilarious and disturbed. What a great book. Twisted observations and lucid takes on the everyday made this book a total pleasure to read and a must to pass along to friends!

Gwen Zepeda's collection of short stories in "To The Last Man I Slept With and All The Jerks Just Like Him" was interesting, wry, witty and entertaining...just like Gwen. I first heard Gwen perform a reading of her stories at a Nuestra Palabra showcase in Houston, TX and immediately appreciated her sense of humor. If you want to get a feel for her work, visit her website at http://www.gwenworld.com. Her website is just as funny if not funnier than her book! I hope she reads for Nuestra Palabra again! 5 out of 5 stars Are You Afraid of A Strong Woman?.......2005-01-13

Gwendolyn Zepeda's wit and honesty will scare you if you aren't ready for characters who have experienced the violence we're all afraid to talk about. But,if you are interested in knowing about (or revisiting) the issues of poverty, domestic violence, sexual abuse and what growing up is like for some girls in big cities, read this book. It is told by a young woman who survives it all and who teaches us that WE are can also be survivors (and rock stars).

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2005-01-12

This book is much more than just a collection of short stories. Gwen delves deeply into the roots of what it's like to be a Latina trailer park wife. She explains in great detail the mundaneness of her situation and how she made the best of it.

Her stories of pain and life lessons makes you laugh and then cry with empathy. Although this book is mostly fiction, you know these stories were taken deep from this Latina's heart and life struggles from the streets of Houston.

Read this book and feel what others and myself have felt. It's a refreshing perspective from an up and coming Latino writer. If you're looking for cheesy chick-lit, judging from the title, you won't find it here.

Book Description

In The Wanton Angel, the tenth in Edward Marston's critically acclaimed series featuring Nicholas Bracewell, court politics threaten to lower the curtain on Lord Westfield's Men.

When the Privy Council decrees that all innyard theaters must close their doors, and only two playhouses may continue to give performances, Nicholas Bracewell and the theater company he manages face certain unemployment. Soon, however, an anonymous, powerful benefactress emerges to protect the vulnerable company. Revealing herself only to Bracewell, she promises to finance a new theater for his group. Invigorated with a fresh sense of hope, Lord Westfield's Men determine to build an impressive performance arena and beat out their rivals, Banbury's Men and Havelock's Men, to capture one of the two coveted theater permits.

But soon after the foundations for the theater are laid, the enthusiasm of Lord Westfield's Men is destroyed when one of the troupe's rising stars is found murdered at the building site. Bracewell must find the killer and uncover the secrets of their mysterious patron before his company gets disbanded permanently.

Rich with vibrant characters and historical detail, The Wanton Angel is a remarkable addition to this popular series.

5 out of 5 stars Tenth Book in a Wonderful Series.......2006-11-30

Edward Marston is the pseudonym of Keith Miles, a fairly prolific and extremely good writer of mainly Elizabethan and medieval mysteries. He has also written mysteries under his own name with both sporting and golf backgrounds. However it is primarily the books that take place earlier in history that I am interested in. He read modern history at Oxford and has had many jobs, including university lecturer, but fortunately for all his readers, he turned to the writing profession.

After their near disbandment in the previous novel (The Fair Maid of Bohemia), court politics now threatens to end the careers of Lord Westfield's Men. When the Privy Council decrees that all inn yard theatres must bring down the curtain, Nicholas Bracewell and the company of players he manages face permanent unemployment.. But as luck would have it a powerful anonymous benefactress emerges to protect the livelihoods of the company.

Reinvigorated, Lord Westfield's men are determined to build a new and impressive theatre area and beat off their rivals, Banbury's Men and Havelock's Men, to gain one of the two theatre permits allowed. Unfortunately no sooner are the foundations laid than one of the troupe's young stars is found murdered at the site. Nicholas must try to find the killer and uncover the secret of their mysterious patron, before his company are permanently disbanded.

The author's love for the Elizabethan theatre comes shining through this series of books. Plus his knowledge of the period fills the pages with authenticity and the sights and sounds of the streets and inns of Elizabethan London.

5 out of 5 stars Marston Stages Another Triumph!.......2000-04-05

"To be or not to be" could very well be the motto of Westfield's Men in this tenth installment of Edward Marston's Nicholas Bracewell mysteries!

It is yet another harrowing and trying experience for these Elizabethan actors, who faced--and overcame--the previous nine threats to their existence as one of the leading acting companies in London!

And Marston has convincingly--as always--set the stage (as it were!) for a clever and intriguing mystery in "The Wanton Angel."

Queen Elizabeth's Privy Council has decided that the "wicked and lascivious ways of the theatre and its crowd" must be curtailed. Thus, it has proclaimed that henceforth, only two theatre companies will exist in London. On top of that, all acting companies performing in courtyards will be curtailed as well. Hence, the Westfield Men face what appears to be the "final curtain" of their careers. Their patron, Lord Westfield, has his own misgivings and is ready to release his sponsorhip. What to do!

Behind the guidance of Bracewell, the company decides to build its own theatre and to compete intensely for the right to perform. Murder and mayhem follow as the plot sickens! One of the actors is found murdered under the pilings of their new theatre; Nicholas is badly beaten; members of the company are being lured away by the rival companies, one by one. Alas, a secret benefactor appears, ready to save the company and to provide a much needed loan in order to continue operating and to build the new theatre, named The Angel. And along the way, there are bits and pieces of romance! We continue to be enthralled by the thespian antics of the leading actor, Lawrence Firethorn, and the other members of the company: Edmund Hoode, Barnaby Gill, Owen Elias, and the actors' nemeses: Sybill and Alexander Marwood (owners of the Queen's Head, where the company performs).

Marston is able to sustain the mystery, the interest, the intrigue of this well- researched novel of Elizabethan England and theatre and it is to his credit that the storyline carries well. Needless to say, in keeping with the series, there is a happy ending--which veteran readers know is bound to happen--but the trip along the way is good reading. The author is well-versed in his historical applications. Indeed, it seems that "all the world really is a stage"!

3 out of 5 stars A nice addition to the series.......1999-09-21

Marston evokes an appealing sense of place and time, but his characters and their dialogue, especially their diaglogue, are too stiff.

Did the Elizabethans never use contractions? Were they always playing verbal games (compliment me/stab me in the back) with each other?

A little more realism and less rigidness would be appreciated - even if it means that the characters appear less than heroic or predictable.

I prefer that our historical brethren live and think and feel, within the context of their times of course, as we do now, even if means putting up with all the imperfections and sillinesses that quantify us, then and now.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to relate to Marston's characters. And this feeling of too much distance is the only imperfection of his novels: his people are too rigid to reach across the hundreds of years that separate us, however much we want to touch them - or they, us.

4 out of 5 stars a change of pace for Ms. Miller.......2000-04-02

I have been a big fan of her later works. This is the first one I have read that is a bit older. I like her novels that lead into a series. Wanton Angel leaves you dancing in the aisles. She never fails to sweep a reader away with the heart felt search for love.

I found myself a wanting to help the young woman find a better job though. Ms. Miller's more recent novels the springwater series are quick reads and very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Regency with a twist.......2002-04-21

This book was a pleasant surprise. It had a little of everything. Spies, harems, Naples, America and England. I didn't expect it to have so many twists and turns. In all it was a good and quick read.

4 out of 5 stars non-stop action thriller.......2002-03-11

In 1811 English spy Derrick Jamison and American painter Elizabeth Blackthorne are attracted to one another, but his assignment for the crown keeps them apart. Besides which they ran in different circles as she is a noted bohemian reputed to pose nude while he is a foppish aristocrat. Though both want it, nothing comes of their first encounter in Washington DC.

They next meet in Naples where they fall into each other's arms and make love. However, not long afterward, pirates capture Beth and sell her to the dey of Algiers so though not a virgin she can join his harem. Derrick manages to rescue her, but their adventures have just begun even as that initial attraction turns to love.

WANTON ANGEL is such a non-stop action thriller that readers will need oxygen to keep up with the frantic pace. However, the cost of all the action is that the characters are not quite developed so that the audience never understands Beth's attitudes on life, so different from her peers. Still Shirl Henke knows how to spin a heated tale so that Regency fans will enjoy a change of pace caper after caper tale that never slows down until the final safe kiss.

Over-protected to an extreme degree, Susannah leaves her home in St. Louis after the death of her parents to stay with her older sister Lilith, a successful businesswoman. What Susannah does not know, however, is that Lilith's business is a brothel. In fact, Susannah is such a complete innocent that she doesn't even know the first thing about the facts of life.

Consequently, I felt it was reprehensible of Aaron Court, an attorney, to take advantage of her as he did. The first time he thought she was a whore. But even so, she was completely unconscious at the time due to the dose of opium he gave her. (Why did he have it around the house, anyway? Is he a drug addict?) However, after the first time, he KNEW what an innocent she was, and he still continued to hound her and seduce her into falling in love with him when he had absolutely no intention of marrying her. This book should be titled "The Cad" instead of "Wanton Angel," because Susannah is no wanton, no matter how much she loves Aaron. And when she finally breaks it off with him after she finds out that he wants her only for the same lustful passion he has spent on Lilith and her "girls" in the past, Aaron kidnaps her off a train and keeps her his sexual slave for a week, STILL with no intention of ever marrying her.

No, Aaron Court is more a villain than a hero. I could never believe a "happy ever after" ending for Susannah with such a man.

This is clearly the weakest Stainless Steel Rat Novel The Rat most of the time treats this investigation as an extended family holiday.

He was really bored anyway on the stultifying planet of rich people getting rejuvenated.

He has plenty of backup. "As head of the Special Corps, the most secret of secret forces that defended the peace and protected the galaxy, his powers were awesome."

Jim is pretty confident in dealing with the alternature universe crossing, Hell creating, self-duplicating madman. "One super-agent of superlative talent and experiment, a lone wolf, he who slinks by night, lithe, hand-some, unbeatable--the galaxy's best agent."

4 out of 5 stars Another in the Great Series.......2007-06-10

Harrison is one of the very few Science Fiction writers that can mix humor with action. By this time he is getting a bit formulaic, but he's still very readable and leaves you wanting still more. I hope to eventually get the whole set of adventures in hard cover. I have many old paperbacks but they are disintegrating in the basement. Sic transit gloria mundi.

3 out of 5 stars Stainless Steel Rat Goes Downhill.......2006-05-03

Slippery Jim, with wife and sons, is back saving the universe again. It starts with an apparent scam, a store-front preacher promising heaven to anyone who can pay enough. The funny thing is, he seems to be delivering on his promise, and not in the form of a one-way trip.

The ins an outs from universe to universe are amusing, as are some of the side-comments. ("Atomic bomb. Keep out of reach of children.") Some scenes would work well in animation, like two hundred Marines storming the gates of Hell, armed with salami. The plot is largely driven by magical saves, though, relying the superscientist on the good guys' team to whip up a hyper-interdimensional-thingie after a few minutes of rewriting the fundamental laws of the universe. It's entertaining enough, but the freshness is definitely off the series.

1 out of 5 stars Glad I found it at the Library.......2005-06-04

I couldn't imagine spending money for this barrel of dung.

This is the first Harry Harrison novel I've ever read. It will be the last. Is this typically how he writes? I've read hints that the Stainless Steel Rat novels are parodies of sci-fi pulp, which is fine. In that case, I got the joke. I got the joke five pages in; the rest was just extraneous. If it was a joke, it was spread awfully thin. A tattered plot filled with guys constantly "growling menacingly" and dames "husking seductively" (sorry, tossed it and am writing from memory)? Full of people otherwise otherwise engaging in all sorts of off-putting and utterly unverisimilitudinous behavior and speaking dialogue that would make Isaac Asimov blush? Sure, that might be funny in a short story. A whole novel full of it makes the reader feel cheated.

Sorry, the Stainless Steel Rat Goes To Hell is less mature and thought-provoking than crud I used to write in elementary school.

1 out of 5 stars The tanking of the series.......2002-06-23

This book is what I consider the terminal end to the series. I've been a die-hard fan of Slippery Jim for around... two decades (and I'm only 26). This book, however, is a phenominal whiffle of bunk. I can't believe that the series has become this corny. It's terribly insulting that Mr. Harrison would do this to one of my most beloved literary memories. Not that I want to give away any spoilers, but I have one word for those of us that have already read the book... SAUSAGES!
So lets say that you don't believe me. Just have a look at the cover. That pretty much sums up the feel of this book. Corny. It made me irate for days.
I'd still like to recommend the first 7-8 books in the series to you folks, though.

The radical religious right has always used fear, guilt and shame - to attack slaves, women, homosexuals and those they disagree with. They seem to expect homosexuals to act like limp-wristed pansies and run away.

Well, meet Reverend Troy Perry and learn why you don't have to be afraid any more.

For those of us who have been driven out of our churches and told we're "evil, perverted and disgusting" by the church, Reverent Troy Perry says that we don't have to take it any more. He says "God didn't create homsexuals so that God would have someone to hate."

For anyone who cares about the liberating power of faith and love, this book is mandatory reading.

In 1968, a full year before the Stonewall Riots that began the historic start of the gay liberation movement in the United States, a young gay minister started a church that would change the lives of countless gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and straight people throughout the world. Meeting with just 12 people in his living room, Reverend Troy Perry began a ministry of hope and healing that continues to this day to more than 300 congregations in 19 different nations.

This incredible book, written by Reverend Troy Perry, founder of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, and co-authored by Thomas Swicegood, details the early life of both Reverend Perry and UFMCC. Rather than simply a chronological retelling of the histories, the book is divided into individual themes: Reverend Perry's childhood, his struggles to accept his homosexuality, the history of women in the MCC churches, international outreach of the denomination, the impact of AIDS on the denomination, and other topics.

My favorite chapters involve the struggles of the early congregations. So many of us who have come to MCC in the past 10 years aren't aware of what the early congregations endured. Some of the more horrific stories involve arson of MCC churches, murder of church members, rejection of the congregations by their local communities, and in one case, an actual cross burning on the grounds of the MCC in Houston, Texas. But within the stories of horror are stories of hope, courage, and a love of God that stands pure and true.

I am unable to complete this review without offering a personal testimony to what this denomination, and this man means to me. For many years I too thought that God couldn't love me because I was gay, but one Sunday in February of 1996 I was taken to Covenant Metropolitan Community Church in Birmingham Alabama by two friends who thought I needed to see what MCC was all about. Reverend Perry was preaching that day in honor of Covenant MCC's 15 year anniversary, and when he told the congregation, "I want you all to turn to each other and say, `You're in the right place,' " tears began to flow from my eyes. I knew that I had found a home and that God loved me after all. Recently Reverend Perry was once again at our church to help us celebrate our 20th anniversary, and I was able to thank him for what he and MCC have done for me and my relationship with God. The tears flowed again, and I wasn't ashamed of a single one of them.

Reverend Perry is one of the most sincere, loving, and genuine Christians you'll ever meet, and I urge you to purchase this book even if you're not a member of an MCC congregation. You will encounter a man who is not a saint, but an ordinary person who has trusted God to give him the strengths and talents to do God's will and make a difference in people's lives.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life........1998-09-14

I discovered this book by accident in an Edinburgh book shop in 1993. I had no active interest in religion at that time but for some reason I felt compelled to buy it. I "devoured" the book in 24 hours and have re-read it several times since.

The book is an honest and inspiring account of Rev Perry's life and the circumstances surrounding the formation of the Metropolitan Community Church. As well as his own testimony, we are treated to the stories of many other people who have helped made MCC what it is in the 19 countries world-wide where its congregations (now over 300 in number) minister.

Two years later I helped found MCC in Edinburgh, Scotland as a result of reading this book. No other book as had such a direct impact on my day to day life.

Even if you are not religious, this book will gave you an insight on the striggles of lesbian and gay people of faith within a Christian church which has often closed its ears to Christ's message of inclusivity and hope.

I first read this book in 1992. I was going to school in Florence, Alabama and I drove 70 miles one-way to Huntsville, Alabama to a gay/lesbian bookstore. I read that book in one afternoon. It brought tears of joy to my eyes and my heart was deeply touched at the courage of Rev. Troy Perry He is an inspiration to all gay/lesbian people everywhere.Words just cannot describe how I feel.

The issue of homosexuality and the church is a broad and difficult issue to discuss, and the authors in this book do a good job of avoiding simplistic answers. Fresh ideas and diverse perspectives make this stand out among similar resources. Seow in particular writes a wonderful essay. Any in-depth exploration of these issues requires several resources, but this should certainly be one of those that you read and to which you refer.

For many Christians, "homosexuality" is an issue. It is often considered a matter of "us" versus "them," or worse, for gay men and women, a question of their behavior, not something intrinsic to their identity. This book examines this conflict from the point of view of a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians. It focuses on current and former members of two Metropolitan Community Churches in California that serve predominantly LGBT Christians. Based on original research, including more than seventy in-depth interviews, the book explores life histories, current beliefs, cultural settings, and community influences to learn what helped each forge an identity as both gay and Christian. These powerful case studies will help to deepen readers understanding of both religion and personal identity.

                      Book Description

Controversy erupted when some churches chose to appoint openly gay pastors. Now questions are arising as to whether or not the body of Christ should recognize a "gay church." Scripture is quite clear on the matter of homosexuality. But how should someone minister to those in the gay and lesbian lifestyles? Williams supports the mantra of "love the sinner, yet detest the sin." Realize that a compassionate approach always means confronting the sin for what it is. To preach the Gospel of pure love, we must shun any deception that puts people in bondage.
