    Book Description

The discovery of an abandoned Spanish merchant ship off the coast of America plunges the Ludlows into a far-reaching conspiracy fueled by jealousy, ambition and nationalistic fervor. The Bucephalas lies trapped under the gaping muzzles of the 32-pounder Spanish guns of New Orleans' harbor fort. It quickly becomes clear that the corridors of the governor's residence are just as busy with treachery, doubled-dealing, and murder as the back alleys of the sweltering city outside.

The second book in Jane Feather's Charm Bracelet trilogy, The Silver Rose offers a dark look at feuding families. Tired of the bloody, long-standing feud between the Ravenspeares and the Hawksmoors, Queen Anne commands Ariel Ravenspeare to marry the Earl of Hawksmoor. Ariel's selfish brothers are only too happy to agree with the Queen's decree because it allows them to concoct an evil plot that will rid them of the Hawksmoors forever. But first they must persuade Ariel to go along with the plan. Ariel, though, has her own secrets, and her plans for the future don't include marrying a dreaded family enemy nor do they include familial camaraderie of any kind. Ariel, who is intelligent and a gifted horse raiser, plans to breed the animals--and live free of her brothers. She doesn't expect to find Hawksmoor to be a kind and temperate man who teaches her that not all men are as selfish and exploitative as her own family.

              Book Description

              Dear Reader,
Like the rose in the haunting tale of "Beauty and the Beast," a silver rose on a charm bracelet brings together a beautiful young woman and a battle-scarred lord....

In my story, Ariel Ravenspeare has been taught to loathe the earl of Hawkesmoor and everything he represents.  Their two families have been sworn enemies for generations.  But it's one thing to hate him, and another to play the part her vicious brothers have written for her--trapping Hawkesmoor into a marriage that will destroy him, using herself as bait.  Forced into the marriage, Ariel will find her new husband unexpectedly difficult to manipulate, as well as surprisingly--and powerfully--attractive.

But beneath the passion lurk the strands of a long-hidden secret...a secret embodied in a sparkling silver rose.

I hope you will be as caught up in Ariel and Hawkesmoor's love story as I was.

              Warmest wishes,

              Jane Feather

              5 out of 5 stars A great read..........2007-05-08

I read the reviews and found them to be quite harsh. I for one loved the book. Ariel and Simon's family were bitter enemies as a result of Ariel's mother and lover (a Hawksmoore...Simon's family)were murdered by Ariel's father. Each side blamed each other and it has passed on to the children.

I love reading about scarred heroes. I find them endearing and likable. Though a fine man inside and out, he had his insecurities. After years of battle, his body and looks had suffered. So I understood his reservations about marrying the beautiful Ariel.

Then there is Ariel...poor Ariel got the brunt of ridicule. I take a look at how she was raised. Her brothers were cruel and had no amount of tenderness for a young girl. They allowed a friend to take advantage of her and become her lover. She only lived how her brothers allowed her to live. When she learned that she was to get married to her family's greatest enemy, she acted how I expected her to. She hated him...so any negative thing out of her mouth was to be expected. He was ugly to her...he was from a family (that as far as she knew) took her mother away from her. Why would she fall into his arms?

Gradually as the book went on, she began to see Simon in a different light. He was not what she expected. Again the only men she knew was her digusting brother and equally digusting lover. She didn't see him as ugly anymore thus confusing her feelings. That coupled with her long wish to be free of any man's control. She wanted her independence and being married complicated things.

I find both characters flaw and thats what made them interesting. Yes, there was not great vow of "I love you" but if you look at there actions there was no doubt.

Now there are some of Ms. Feather's book that I can't get through but this wasn't one of them. I actually read this one a few times over. So if you're a first time reader of her books...give this one a chance before shucking it aside.

1 out of 5 stars The Silver Rose.......2005-09-11

Awful book even for a romance. Not entertaining, and most of the characters in the book are frustating, including the heroine. A waste of time.

              5 out of 5 stars GREAT READ.......2003-08-24

I loved the book. It got bad reviews, but I thought it was very touching. The characters were flawed but we're all flawed.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not recommended..........2003-04-23

Echoing many other readers, this book definitely lacked many things. I found it boring at times and skipped several pages. Ariel is selfish, stubborn, and very annoying to read about. There was nothing satisfying about this book at all. This book did not provoke any strong emotions and lacked sense at times. This was my first time reading a Jane Feather book and I am definitely not going to read anymore.

3 out of 5 stars Second in Charm Bracelet series.......2001-08-17

I was not into this story as much as the first in the series. Call me old fashioned but I like my herorines unsullied and the fact that Ariel came to her marriage bed not a virgin did not sit well with me. I just could not like her that much. Her only saving grace was the love of her animals. But Simon was a true hero, if alittle on the scarred side. He made the story tolerable. I hope the third book in the series is better.

4 out of 5 stars heart-touching story of a forbidden love that wouldn't be denied........2007-04-30

Diana Turner is a young woman desperately trying to make it through the world alone. In a time when women are dependant on men for their survival, she's dressing as a man in order to work as a stagecoach driver to support herself. As a young girl, she'd fallen in love with Silver Feather, a Choctaw Indian and she has never forgotten him.

Silver Feather's family had been enslaved by Diana's stepfather. As a young man, Silver Feather would meet with Diana in the hidden passageways of Dettro Manor. It was the bright spot in his bleak life. Then his life was shattered when he witnessed his parents' murder and he was forced to flee the land he knew to save himself, and leave behind the girl he had fallen in love with.

Silver Feather had worked alongside his parents picking cotton at Dettro Manor, where the Choctaw Indians were enslaved. He'd heard his father speak of papers that Diana's stepfather had, which would prove that they'd been cheated. In fact, this land they're working should rightfully belong to them. After seeing his parents shot and killed, Silver Feather knows his life is in danger and so he runs and hides in the cotton fields until he can sneak away without being detected. Diana came looking for him. Fearing a trap but also trusting in his friendship with Diana, Silver Feather reveals himself to her. Diana warns him of her stepfather's anger and hides Silver Feather in the hidden passageways while she looks for the paperwork proving his father's claims of being cheated. If the papers are found, Silver Feather would be able to claim the Choctawa's rightful land as well as free them from their slavery. When Diana still has not found the papers after several days of searching, Silver Feather knows he must leave, he knows that he cannot endanger Diana any longer. Brokenhearted, they are forced to say their good-byes, both believing they will never see each other again.

With vivid, unforgettable characters, SILVER FEATHER brings life in the 1800's into your imagination with a wonderfully heart-touching story of a forbidden love that wouldn't be denied. Silver Feather was only fourteen years old when he was forced into running for his life after the deaths of his parents. He left everything he knew and loved behind, not knowing what fate would await him or what kind of future he'd have. Diana's strength and determination in the face of incredible odds are amazing. She'd lost everything when her stepfather died, and yet she is willing to do everything she can to survive without depending on a man for anything. Finding each other years after their separation, they bravely face down their foes to reclaim their love and land.

As a longtime reader of Cassie Edwards' novels, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this newest story and living vicariously through the characters. SILVER FEATHER is Cassie Edwards ninetieth published book.

              4 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2007-01-04

Diana is separated from her childhood love, a young Indian brave named Silver Feather, by her step-father's treachery. But Diana and Silver Feather never stop dreaming of one another, and are reunited years later when they are all grown up. However, many enemies lurk in the shadows who would try to tear them apart.

The previous reviewer is right that the love story here is very simple, and very sweet. So if you don't like the mushy stuff, watch out. But I found it a great antidote to all those books where the hero and heroine act like they hate each other, and are constantly sniping at one another, will sleep with each other but refuse to love each other, and accuse, hurt, and betray one another. This hero and heroine are deeply in love, and they act like it. The tension and crises come from outside forces that would attempt to rip them apart, but their love for one another doesn't waver.

I got this book from the library, but am thinking of buying a copy to keep. A great "comfort read."

              THOUGHTS:
I THOUGHT IT WAS OK, for me it was just too simple i did try to like it really but for me just like the first cassie edwards i read SWIFT HORSE i didn't like it . I thought the begin was ok until they found each other then its "I love U, i've always loved you lets get married". Your saying after reading that line that thats how romance novels are suppose to be, NO they are not suppose to be like that like everything is always honky doory between couples they are suppose to have their highs and lows with each other and make you feel like your apart of their emotions or a better way of putting it make you feel like you have connected with them. I didn't feel like that reading this book, Its just too simple I try reading all of it but stopped at chapter 23 and skip to the ending because they pretty much already decided what they were going to do after seeing each other and i didn't want to finish the action part of the book it made me not want to find out what happens maybe i'm not a true cassie edwards fan to appreciate her work. I was really looking forward to adding her to my collection of authors or maybe i just don't get her writting style

I can tell you this much after the first one that i read my anticipation was low for this book so i wasn't really mad... maybe just maybe i will try to read something else of hers and the 3rd times the charm...

Another book that I found a chore to read although I kind of liked it at the end. Nothing really stands out but at the end of the book I was glad for the happily ever after since the two lead characters went through so much. I liked Sophia & her relationship with her grandfather. Some of the rest of the story was fun (the Russian history, even if I have no idea if it was correct or not) but it seemed to go on & on. I was glad to get to the end and start another book. Probably not one that will stay with me for long.

3 out of 5 stars Well-written dialogue and passion; frustrating plot.......2006-01-13

I started reading Jane Feather when I picked up a used copy of The Diamond Slipper and was instantly hooked. This story is far removed from that one, it is still very good, but the theme of an unhappy princess in the Russian court forced into an arranged marriage by the czarina was kind of overused. This is a predominant theme in many of Feather's novels (that of a forced marriage). The Diamond Slipper and the Silver Rose in the Charm Bracelet series follow that theme, too. Basically, the author gives the heroines license to commit adultery, to the extent that they can get away with it.

Sophie is a likable heroine. She is tomboyish and very physical, preferring riding a horse in men's breeches to wearing a gown into a drawing room. Adam is a great hero, I have no complaints about him, except that he knew from the beginning that Sophie was off-limits and that her husband was a psycho.

This book has a lot of passion and suspense. The lovemaking scenes do not disappoint. The ending could have been better, and the Czarina Catherine was a vapid character kind of scribbled into the story to create the conflict and provide some minor comic relief, but again, she frustrated me, too. Buy this one used.

I did not mind the adultery at all. InFact it only added to the excitement in the plot. Since Sophie's husband was such an evil man, it was understandable that these lovers had to commit adultery to be with each other. I loved the Russian setting which is different and exciting from Jane feather's usual setting. This was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I absolutely loved the character of Sophie. She was one of the best heroines. Not at all like the usual needy, clingy, insecure females but strong, intelligent, confident and utterly secure in herself. I absolutely admired the fact that she never pestered Adam about his past but instead let him confide in her on his own. One of the best scenes was the "Devil's Punch Bowl" scene where Adam and Sophie stare up at the silver Russian sky scattered with stars wondering about their future. The imagery was beautiful and as always Jane feather's writing was incomparable. Sensual and beautiful... one can;t regret reading this book...Enjoy!!!

The setting is Russia in 1764, a nice change of scenery! The head of Russia, Czarina Catherine has arranged a marriage between Princess Sophia Alexeyevna and one of her head military leaders who is known to be a strict military tyrant at home as well as on the battle field, who is 30 years her senior. She will be his 4th wife (the 1st 3 were met by accidents). Apparently he is hard to please. Count Adam Danilevski, her future husband's head soldier, is her messenger and her escort to the wedding and new home. Due to the lengthy travel, Adam has a chance to get to know the free-spirited Sophie real well- her strengths and weaknesses, and falls in love with her wanting to protect her even from her future husband (knowing his "track record"). She suffers abuse at the hands of her husband for control of will and it is a loveless match. Sophie looks towards Adam for just a little spark of love that she must have to survive. The story is full of adventure, surprises, elaborate parties and secret escapades. How will Sophie escape him and who will be friend her- will be a surprise for you. The love she experiences with Adam is sooo sweet and your heart goes out to Adam at how the adultery tears at him. And without giving away the ending, I am sure glad that romances have happying endings because this one would have sure been a "tear-jerker" if not. It's a really good story and I truly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Serves the genre well.......2003-01-06

This was the first Jane Feather book that I read and I still feel it is the best, some 10 years later. The story is captivating and suspenseful and the characters are well-written, with positive qualities and flaws. The setting is outside the usual British or American historical locale, which adds to its interest. All the way through this book you want to know what will happen to Sophie and Adam and you're not disappointed in the final outcome!

5 out of 5 stars A memorable, moving, and beautifully written novel........2000-05-01

This novel traces relationships between and among members of disparate communities who are propelled into unexpected contact with each other by the exigencies of war -- WWII, Berlin. All sorts of basic human relationships--father/daughter, lovers, friends--are put to the test by the evils of the evil, opportunistic, or just plain unthinking perpetrators of and collaborators in Hitler's madness. And Kaufelt takes us into many levels of society, from domestic life to theatrical life, from restaurants to prisons, from the commercial to the juridical, so readers can watch in horror as options disappear: terror, defiance, courage, and passion are all part of the emotional mix. Some of the scenes in this book are among the most memorable I have ever read.

And I'm a guy who doesn't cry! This entire book is wonderful, but the ending is truly marvelous! I read a lot of Christian fiction, fantasy. This gal is GOOD! Great characters, great character development, great story, suspense and surprises. Packed with emotion. I can't wait to get my hands on book number 2, The Stone of Power. As of this writing, I believe it's behind its' scheduled release date, but I'm more than willing to wait. I haven't read any of the other reviews, so I have no idea what others think, but I had a hard time putting this book down. I've never been a big fan of love stories, and it would be selling Giver of Roses waaay short to call it just a love story, because there's adventure, tragedy, humor, war, and sooo much more. But when all was said and done, and I'd had time to digest and analyze what I'd just read, I was left with an overwhelming sense of the almost limitless power of unconditional love.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an exciting and well-written story about ordinary people who are thrust into extraordinary situations and in the process find the true path to overcoming adversity.

                          Bravo! ENCORE!!

When true and false religion come into conflict, lives are forced to change and destinies are shaped in an ancient world. Vartran is a prince and warrior, not used to depending on anyone but himself and his skills until he is struck blind. God sends his salvation in the form of someone who desires his birthright. When he receives again his sight, he is able to see not only with his eyes, but also his heart. That vision leads him on a new path, one that seems to be united to that of Lady Danae. Yet, the dangers ahead will call upon them both to make sacrifices. Sometimes the only way to love is to let go of what you hold dearest, whether it be a crown or your heart.

*** Though not overwhelming, the allegory is clear. Ms Morgan's return to her fantasy roots will be welcomed. Her style continues to improve with every book. ***

Kathleen Morgan is gifted!! This is the 3rd of her books that I have read. Right away, I connected with the characters. I felt their disappointments, their yearnings, their feelings of unworthiness, etc. I struggled putting this book down.
I do have to say, however, without giving the ending away that I was extremely disappointed with the end and was left with my heart breaking. I hope that The Stone of Power addresses the unresolved emotions that both the characters and the readers are left with.

I purchased this book several months ago, read it within a few days, and promised myself to write a review. After endless promises to myself, I've finally made time. And I'm glad I waited. Giver of Roses, with its epic scenery true-to-life-flawed characters, and bittersweet ending, has some unforgettable scenes--both harsh and tender--that have returned to me during the past few months.

One of the most influential theorists of religion, Jonathan Z. Smith is best known for his analyses of religious studies as a discipline and for his advocacy and refinement of comparison as the basis for the history of religions. Relating Religion gathers seventeen essays—four of them never before published—that together provide the first broad overview of Smith's thinking since his seminal 1982 book, Imagining Religion.

Smith first explains how he was drawn to the study of religion, outlines his own theoretical commitments, and draws the connections between his thinking and his concerns for general education. He then engages several figures and traditions that serve to define his interests within the larger setting of the discipline. The essays that follow consider the role of taxonomy and classification in the study of religion, the construction of difference, and the procedures of generalization and redescription that Smith takes to be key to the comparative enterprise. The final essays deploy features of Smith's most recent work, especially the notion of translation.

Heady, original, and provocative, Relating Religion is certain to be hailed as a landmark in the academic study and critical theory of religion.

Jonathan Z. Smith is the greatest and most interesting theorist of religion today. In this book Smith analyzes theories of his famous academic predecessors and voices his concerns with the issues in classification and nomology of religion. Smith is concerned with the ways in which folk psychology affects our perception of "religion" and "religious". He argues that the very concept of "religion" is a second-order term invented by post-Enlightenment scholars and therefore any attempts at defining "religion" should be abandoned.
Smith argues that historically widely accepted concepts of (for example) "magic" or Melanesian "mana" or even "canon" should be redefined by accurate historical and athropological work.

In the concluding essay "God save this honorable court" Smith shows that all legal definition of religious are circular ("religious organization is the organization engaged in religious activities") and the idea of religious tolerance is empty of content unless we provide the universal definition of religion. He provides and discusses real-life legal cases such as the one concerning the use of hallucinogen peyote by Native Americans.

This book will mostly benefit people interested in Religious Studies (particularly History of Religions) or Anthropology, but Smith's clear and lucid writing style, coupled with his playful humor and concern for broader issues can make his writing interesting for laity.
