Book Description
From the author of the smashing debut bestseller "Good Hair" comes "The Itch," the stirring story of a crisis-torn woman who discovers a depth of character and a sense of self she never knew she possessed. Abra Lewis Dixon is the envy of the fashionable, professional women of her well-heeled social circle. She leads a charmed life -- having attended all the right schools, married the right man, and started a successful film production company with her best friend, Natasha Coleman -- and seems like an ambassador from the world of perfection. It is only when her impeccable marriage turns suddenly shaky that her utopia is left in pieces.

Not very good.......2003-10-15
I just finished listening to this book on tape, and I wasn't all that impressed. I expected something more. I think the end could have been a little better, but it ended really soft, not leaving you looking forward to her next book.
Cardboard Cutouts.......2003-07-07
This book is a dressed up version of what has become the stereotypical Black turn of the century saga--the SBW (Strong Black Woman) versus the NGBM (No Good Black Man.)
It's almost insulting-- when will our Black female authors let go of this tired theme? Do any Black women in their thirties KNOW any happily married couples? You wouldn't think so, according to Ms. Little. Even poor Natasha is doomed. She's the only character with a well adjusted family, but her life was just TOO darned PERFECT.
The characters in this book are shallow, self serving, nouveau riche BORES. That could still make a good book, but sadly, on top of being obnoxious, they are thinly written. We never really understand what makes them tick.
One interesting omission: In The Itch, a book that is ostensibly about Black upward mobility, Ms. Little completely ignores the "old guard" Black upper-class, which has quietly existed since BEFORE Reconstruction. The ancestors of this little known group owned land and property. Some had been slaves who bought their freedom-- many were free born. They began pursuing college degrees and upward mobility in the 19th century.
No, Little deals only with the Cristal swigging, label hound arrivistes, one or two generations removed from the 'hood. Rareified circles? NOT!!!
Where are characters Miles and Cullen now that the market bubble has burst? As for Abra and Natasha? Why, it's just Shug and Celie zoomin' down Rodeo Drive in a silver Porsche.
Not exactly a message of hope.......2002-07-10
Benilde Little returns in The Itch with a cast of bicoastal buppies whose lives are bankrupt in spite of stellar educations, turbo-power careers, great looks, and a lack for nothing material. They have all bought into the lie "what you have is who you are" or my favorite rendering, "what you got is who you is." They have all the trappings that we're brainwashed to believe will make us happy, but they all have holes in their souls because they live for nothing greater than glorifying self, a sure path to abysmal disappointment. The women in Little's story appear a little better than the men, but they're still after self-gratification, they merely choose procreation to achieve their ends while the men choose the traditional routes of sex, money, and power. No one seems to have a moral compass; one character in the story chants to himself "[think] only good thoughts" when he thinks he's on the verge of making partner at the firm, even though he just dumped his wife of 10 years for a model who's incapable of loving anyone other than herself (he just doesn't know it yet). The men are all womanizers ("dogs" and "players"). Through processing their failed relationships, the women emerge somewhat healthier for the moment, but the men remain lost and continue chasing their tails (and everyone else's).
The Itch made me grateful not to be a part of the MBA buppie world with its insatiable appetite for material consumption and never-ending quest for self-glorification. If your life resembles that of anyone in The Itch, I feel sorry for you.
It takes hope to scratch the itch; unfortunately this book does not provide any.
Boring.......2002-04-07
This is one of the most boring books I have ever read.
Great Book.......2001-11-02
This is the follow-up to Good Hair. Benilde is a terrific writer and keeps you wanting more. Another fast read if you are looking for a book that will keep your interest.

The lord and the batty inventor.......2007-03-16
I'll start out this review by stating that I have no idea why the book is titled Midsummer Moon. Usually book titles have at least something to do with the book;s content, but this one... I never did quite figure it out. But that's okay, because it's a lovely book.
Merlin did, on occasion, drive me batty. She's so vague and oblivious and has no comprehension of sarcasm whatsoever. But that's okay, because it's her character. She's a vague and dreamy sort of inventor, the sort who pretty well blocks out the world to concentrate solely on their inventions. And she was inadvertently amusing several times, to the point where I did, in fact, giggle. Ransom was a bit better -- he loved her, but he could be fairly unscrupulous to get what he wanted, and knew it.
I also loved how Merlin didn't want to get married, and maintained that decision throughout the majority of the book. She loved him, but she knew he would clip her wings, so to speak, and so she took the harder decision and refused to marry him. You don't often see that in a romance novel, and I find it refreshing.
Really good read!.......2007-01-12
This is a really good read with engaging characters and a story that draws you in and holds you to the end. One of the better books I've read in a long while.
My favorite book of my favorite author!.......2003-03-15
I don't care what the others thought. I still believe this to be THE best of Kinsale's books. The inventor was just SO smart that she invented things to improve HER life (such as the talking box aka phone) and never considered that others would find it a miracle. Once her invention works, she forgot it and went on to the next. She was not absent minded or dense. She was just so smart she moved on.
This is my all time favorite of Laura Kinsale's books. That is saying something since Laura Kinsale is my personal all time favorite author!
I can hardly wait for "Enchanter" to come out within the next year!
Worth a Second Look.......2002-03-02
I agree with another reviewer: when I first read this book, several years ago, I thought it was pretty "fluffy." However, it improves upon re-reading. There is more depth to the complex family dynamic than I first noticed. Ransom's relationship to his brother became more poignant on second reading. The mother's walk-ons became more humorous. And Ransom's behaviour toward the children in the story became more telling... Even at first read, I appreciated that she was more object-oriented than relationship-oriented. It takes an actual act of will to decide that the social domain - politesse, hierarchy, etiquette, etc - is too trivial to waste attention on. In the multiple intelligences model, Merlin's interpersonal intelligence might not approach average. But she has other, redeeming talents, her mathematical and intrapersonal intelligence clearly among them. And I like that she does not obsess over sex. Her relationship to Ransom just does not occupy a significant proportion of her consciousness. The sex is pleasant, true, but taken as a whole with his drawbacks, it isn't clear that Ransom will be a net asset to her life's work. Like the heroine of Prince of Midnight, Merlin is refreshingly practical, in an abstract way. This is a book that improves with age. If you read it in a romance junkie way, you'll miss its whimsy.
A "scientific romance" of great humor.......2001-10-04
OK, I'll admit - my absolute favorite thing about this book is that the real hero is Merlin's pet hedgehog. Oh, there's a human hero, of the usual tall, dark and handsome type, for love interest - but it's the hedgehog who really saves the day. He's a perfectly natural hedgehog, not an anthropomorphized animal - he just does his hedgehogly thing. As the human slave to three pet hedgehogs, I got a great kick out of him.
Let's see. Merlin hasn't invented quite as many things as Ayla (you may remember Ayla, from the "Clan of the Cave Bear" series - Ayla domesticates the horse, Ayla domesticates the dog, Ayla invents the slingshot, Ayla invents the sewing needle, Ayla invents the cotton gin - no wait, that was someone else...) but she has her share - the telephone, and, more importantly to the English forces arrayed against Napoleon, the hang glider.
This is the only romance novel I've ever even tried to convince a guy to read, and the guy liked it. He missed a bit, not being as familiar with all the "conventions" of Regency era romances as most regular readers of them are, but he still enjoyed it.
My tastes in romances are pretty particular- I have high standards I demand of the writing, and clumsy or poorly written books turn me off. Kinsale will never fall into that category - she, along with a precious few others - Mary Balough, Edith Layton... writes well enough that if her books weren't pre-stigmatized as romances, they'd be among our better-written novels by contemporary novelists.

Moon or Summer?.......2004-04-02
MIDSUMMER MOON by Doris Johnson is the story of June Saxton, an airline stewardess and Matt Gardiner, a member of the famous Mabel Food Company. The premise of the story is their inability to communicate verbally with each other and the havoc it causes. Duped monetarily by her friend during a business venture, June withdraws into herself becoming insecure and depressed. Matt saves the day for June but with her lack of trust in human beings, she cannot see the forest for the trees. Why would Matt make good on someone else's duplicity?
This is my first time reading a romance novel by Doris Johnson and I found it delightful and somewhat different. Johnson's locales are serene and made for romance; she highlights large houses that are used to board multiple people, i.e., bed and breakfast type homes and she showcases nontraditional occupations. One concept that is familiar is the family theme running through the book, which is refreshing. Several couples and their relationship issues are touched upon which adds a nice flavor to the novel, giving you a different take on the personalities at play and their resolve. Add brooding males, strong willed females and other humorous characters and MIDSUMMER MOON becomes a pleasurable reading experience.

A Slow Thoughtful Ride Through Regency England.......1999-08-14
Midsummer Moon is a novel that is not fast paced, nor is it original in plot. Two things that normally would not send me running to the bookshelf. The author (Joy Reed), slowly pulls you into this story of "Plain" Jane and the "foppish" Sir George. I came to care about these characters and was sorry the book had to end. Truly a sign of a good book!

Book Description
Over twenty-five years ago, the first humans came to the unspoiled planet of Doona. They ignored one important fact: They were not alone. Doona was the home of the cat-like alien race of Hrrubans. And so began an experiment in cohabitation that lasted for a quarter of a century.
Their contract is now up for renewal.
Now, their delicate alliance is threatened by new alien visitors offering friendship. But not everyone believes in their motives. And as a battle of diplomatic unrest ensues, Doona once again falls under the dark shadow of uncertainty and self-destruction.

Careful!!! NOT full set!.......2004-07-27
I ordered this under the impression that it contained all three Doona books - decision, crisis and treaty (as the above review states). However, it ONLY has the second and third (crisis and treaty). I'm not too upset because I paid only 4 dollars for it used, but still. Keep this in mind if you plan to buy this book.
On the other hand, Anne McCaffrey is fabulous and I love these books. The three stars is only for the publication itself, not the novels!
Doona complied.......2004-06-17
This is yet another attempt to re-release a set of stories with nothing new. If you have not read the Doona series then this is your chance to get the whole set of Decision, Crisis and Treaty Planet in one set. Otherwise don't bother.

Book Description

But since their own planet was overcrowed, they looked to colonize Doona--until they found the Hrubbans. Their choice was simple but dangerous. They could kill the cat-like Hrubbans, or for the first time in history, learn to to coexist with an alien race....
Customer Reviews:
Major flaws, but not bad overall........2006-12-24
My overall impression after reading this book was that it was a cute little sci-fi throwaway novel.
As a lot of people have pointed out, the book is over thirty years old, and it shows. The portrayal of the women is enough to make you cringe. They are perfect housewives who have a sole purpose of keeping a clean home and raising the children while their `men folk' do all the hunting and gathering. I thought it was ironic that the aliens seemed to be more advanced in that regard than the humans.
Todd, the child character was written so that he seemed almost cartoonish. Although he was six he had an entire ship load of people in terror at his tantrums. At times when I was reading his descriptions and his terrors though the book I was wondering out loud if this was a joke.
Also the ending, with all the different earth organizations just outright confused me. Eventually I lost track of trying to keep track of the names of the government officials because I eventually realized it didn't even matter.
So why did I give this four stars? The plot itself was very original. I loved the way that Anne Mccaffrey painted life on earth. It really drew you in and made you realize truly how desperately the colonists needed to get out. The aliens were original as well, and I truly enjoyed the twist at the end (which I will not give away here).
So despite its major flaws in the characters, the book didn't make me feel like I wasted my time. My advice is to read it knowing that you will be reading something that was written in a society with a different set of gender morals. If anything it shows how things have changed since then - for the better!
Disappointingly limited........2004-08-07
I enjoyed this book as a child, but re-reading it as an adult was disappointing. It's hard to believe I didn't notice at the time how absolutely pathetic the female characters are. Though set in the future, women cook and look after children - that's it! The protagonist's wife is the only woman who gets to say more than a sentence or two and she spends most of her time in tears. Except when cooking. The author was able to create female characters who weren't idiots in the Pern books, so it's surprising that she made no such attempt here. Even thirty years ago, this should have seemed oldfashioned, and it certainly isn't necessary to the plot. Perhaps the sequels were more believable in this area, but I am reluctant to try them now.
Gentle science fiction from 1969.......2001-03-12
Humans are forbidden to have contact with other intelligent races in space. That edict comes as a result of the fact that human contact with the Swiannese race resulted in their mass suicide. This rule is tested when a race of human colonists finds that they are not alone on their uninhabited planet.
The writing in the book is spare and often elegant. While elements of the plot show its age, it demonstrates McCaffrey's consummate skill as a science fiction/fantasy author.
Wonderful plot about co-existing races........1999-09-28
I was so tired of sci-fi books dealing with Humans going out to murder another race. This book gave a welcome change, two completely different species working together to create a new world for themselves. I've never read the sequels, but having just read this book alone was wonderful.
So what if it's 30 years old?.......1999-07-20
I enjoyed this book a lot. The writing style was not flowery or poetic, just easy to follow and understand. Ken, Hrrestan, and the other main characters are interesting and fun to read about, and we sympathize for the human colonists as they try to understand a new alien race, and face the possibility of having to leave this paradise of a colony world to return to an overpopulated and excessively structured Earth. Don't miss it.

Okay, but not as good as the first two........1999-07-20
After finding "Decision at Doona" and "Crisis on Doona" to be two of the best books I've read recently, I started in on this one with great anticipation. It's hard not to want to read more about Doona and some of the characters we've come to love.
The book was generally good and enjoyable, and was time well spent, but in my opinion it was weaker than the first two. The plot didn't seem as well constructed, and some threads were not adequately developed or resolved. I kept waiting for the story to kick into high gear, but except for a few tense moments, it seemed to just coast along.
I too hope there are more books in this series. And I hope that McCaffrey (now 73) has given Nye her blessing to continue the series if she dies anytime soon.
I Want More!.......1999-07-07
This is a truly great ending to the Doona trilogy; just one problem: I want more! The ending of the book just begged for at least one more enstallment to this lovely series. Though there was one thing that I did not like and that was the fact that Spacedep was the antagonist in all three books. I should think that after the first two incidents involving Spacedep that they would have tried to keep it out of the Gringg affair. But all in all, a great book and *hopefully* more to come.

Customer Reviews:
It's a crisis alright........2000-08-31
Looking and reading like a romance novel, I found Crisis at Doona a dissapointment. Being a long time fan of Ms. McCaffrey's I was dismayed at what I read. Instead of the usual well developed characters and stories, cardboard cutouts moved around on a wooden stage. Ms. McCraffrey wrote several romance novels and now apparently has become enamored of the style, sadly enough. Like late period Heinlein, go back and read the earlier works, leave the rest to the rabid fans.
irritatingly inconsistent book.......2000-07-07
It's just that this sci-fi/mystery book has very poor elements of mystery in it. Many facts in the book are contradictory (not on face). I shouldn't tell any element of the book so I won't reveal the errors.
However, I did manage to get through this sacharrine and very typical book of the style of Anne and Mercades and Andre. It's O.K. despite my disappointment with it. To the point, this book is the lightest of light reading for people who want to pass time. There is no way it deserves five stars in my opinion.
Even better than the original.......1999-07-20
Here we find that Todd and Hrriss, two characters who became best friends as children in "Decision at Doona", are still best friends 25 years later and have become role model citizens. But suddenly they are accused of some serious crimes just as the agreement between the Humans and the Hrrubans is up for renewal, and as a result the continued existence of their shared colony world is in jeopardy. No one who knows the two very well believes for a minute that they've committed the acts they're accused of, but the body of evidence against them that will be used to hold them in judgement seems to be mounting up. A riveting tale of mystery and suspense.
A wonderful sequel to "Decision at Doona"!.......1998-03-12
Ms. McCaffrey has chosen a good companion in J.L. Nye. They work well in this sequel to the original Doona book. This series is one of my favorites from the mind of one of the best. As with Pern, she brings the land and the people alive. Here's hoping there will be many more on this series!

Scripture promises that God's people "shall not labor in vain, nor bring forth children for trouble; for they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them" (Is. 65:22-23) and that Christ "will turn...the hearts of the children to their fathers" (Mal.4:6).
Yet Christian parents today face a disturbing exodus of their children from the Church to the world. Why is this? What is the place of children within the faith? What do the promises mean? Recognizing that this subject is fraught with difficulty and grief, the twelve contributors to this volume seek to address the hard questions and lay a biblical foundation of hope for our children.

A clarion call for church leaders.......2005-08-05
This is a book that every church leader should read, especially those who have flouted the qualifications for ecclesiastical authority laid out by the apostle Paul. It seems odd, at least to me, that a number of ruling and teaching elders in Reformed congregations don't understand that if they lack leadership in their own home how do they expect to be leaders of "the Way." Likewise, can those whose children have rejected the faith properly instruct parents in what a godly home entails? Perhaps, but I won't take them seriously. Many church leaders will undoubtedly make excuses. But they should consider the fact that this irenic collection of essays calls leaders to rebuild their untenable homes for the sake of the church and the faithful teaching of the gospel.
Let me blunt: get your house in order, or step down.
The book is both theologically stimulating and immensely practical. It will encourage parents to be examples of godliness to their children. More importantly, however, the book will reinvigorate our confidence in the salvific promise of God to us and to our children.
