Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2001-08-24
I couldn't put this one down...although it's more of a group of mysteries strung together, rather than just one, I still found it very entertaining. A nice, light read.
A definite waste of time.......2001-02-27
I had never read a Dorothy Gilman book before this one and I was very, very dissappointed. If it were not such a short book (about 224 pages) I would have abandoned it before even finishing it, which I do not like to do, but I did hang in there until the bitter, bitter end. I have read some good mysteries before, and this "mystery" lacks a significant plot. The only "digging" the sleuths do is watch this Madame at work with her psychic powers. Soon after that, the mysteries were solved too easily and were not at all believable. I am trying not to let this book ruin me for other Dorothy Gilman books. I keep telling myself that this one was written early on in her career and she probably got better with age.
Wonderful! An excellent read; highly recommended.......2000-10-18
I love Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax series (particularly the early books -- through and including Mrs. Pollifax on Safari, although I still eagerly read all of them as soon as they're published), and adored A Nun in the Closet. Although I hadn't expected to like this one, I was very pleasantly surprised. It is thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable -- one of the few mysteries I've saved to reread.
Hard to classify, but great fun anyway........2000-08-20
Not exactly a series of short stores nor yet exactly a novel, this book is the story of a clairvoyant and the way she worked with one particular policeman, Lieutenant Pruden (prudent=sensible=skeptical?), who doesn't know exactly how much he believes her, but is willing to work with her to get results. The small series of mysteries they work on overflow outside one chapter apiece, but there is no one overarching plot, hence the classification difficulty. Once again Gilman has created if not believable (i choose to see as fictional this kind of clairvoyance) at least very attractive and readable characters.
More like an novel steeped in mystery than a regular mystery.......2000-07-12
I adored this book. This was the first book of Ms. Gilman's that I have read and I can't wait to get my hands on some others soon. I thought that The Clairvoyant Countess was truly well written and wonderfully entertaining.
While this is not your average mystery as the book is more about the interaction between Madame Karitska and Detective Pruden than it is about the mysteries that they solve - it is still a great read for mystery lovers.
At the start of the book the readers are introduced to the clairvoyant Countess Madame Kartiska. We learn about her gift and how she uses it, we meet some of her clients and through this we learn of their fates. The reader becomes intimately involved with some of her clients as through one of them, we also meet Detective Pruden who comes across the countess' name during an investigation.
She helps him in several different ways, she aids him in solving several crimes and she introduces him to a side of himself that he never knew. We also have the opportunity to meet several other clients that she introduces to one another and we can watch their relationships grow.
There are several mysteries woven in through the plot and the reader discovers that who dunnit isn't always the reason to read on.
The Clairvoyant Countess won't appeal to every mystery lover but for those who take the plunge it is very refreshing and highly enjoyable. IT is really a shame that Ms. Gilman has not made this into a series as well as her Mrs. Polifax series as I would love to continue to watch these characters grow.

A delightful combination, definitely a keeper..........2005-09-21
This was a stellar pairing of wonderful writers.
"A Little Dare", Jackson
Alisdare "Dare" Westmoreland and Shelly Brockman were high-school and college sweethearts. After 6 years of what appeared to all to be an amazing relationship, Dare decided he was more interested in pursuing a career in the FBI than continuing his relationship with Shelly. Shocked and destroyed, Shelly moved away. Ten years later Dare is the Sheriff of their hometown and Shelly returns after years of self exile.
Shelly returns to town with a 10-year son that Dare doesn't know exists. Having reached that challenging pre-teen age, Shelly decides that it is finally time for Dare to meet his son and to help raise him.
Dare is shocked and surprised that he has a son and commits to doing whatever he can to win his son's love and trust. What Shelly doesn't know is that it is not only his son's heart that Dare has designs on.
This is a delightful story of attempting a second chance at love. In her enjoyable and fine tradition, Ms. Jackson crafts an attention-capturing, fulfilling tale.
"A Younger Man", Alers
When Jerome Kumi Walker encounters Veronica Johnson-Hamlin on the side of the road as she waits for help with her flat tire, he is both impressed and amused at the independent streak that only barely allows her to accept his assistance. When Kumi requests a home-cooked meal as a way for Veronica to repay his favor, she again reluctantly accepts. After sharing that meal, Kumi is strongly drawn to Veronica, while Veronica thinks Kumi - 10 years her junior - is too young and probably too inexperienced for her.
Kumi sets out on a mission to prove Veronica wrong. As he begins to court her he senses that much of her resistance is related to a painful past that she's unwilling to share. Kumi, however, is not deterred, as he is dealing with his own personal family drama, and sets out single-mindedly to woo Veronica.
This tale is satisfying in its allowing each of the characters to grow and develop individually as the romantic interaction between them unfolds. I really enjoyed this story.

Another Sizzling Romance.......2007-06-12
Brenda Jackson has done it again. This book starts off with an interesting bang and proceeds to keep the reader turning to the last page. It's filled with sensual scenes, and a beautiful reunion.
Too sexy.......2007-05-11
I really liked this book. The love scenes were too sweet and sexy. I read it in a day. I could not put it down.
If You Dare?!!!!.......2007-03-26
I enjoyed the second novel about the Westmoreland family. Although the story was about Dare, Shelly and AJ, it definitely gave you more insight into the tight bond of the Westmoreland family. It kept me interested in the story from beginning to end. It also gave hints to what the next story would be about. The sexual scenes were definitely HOT. I thought it was a great story about second chances and the ties that bind. I enjoyed when Dare decided go old school and "woo" Shelly, to help her realize that he still loved her and he wanted them to be a family.
A Little Dare.......2006-08-28
Even though this book came out a few years ago, I just found time to read it. It was great and I was not disappointed. I have been enjoying all the of the Westmoreland series. Brenda Jackson shows how much love a family can have, which makes them extra special. This book didn't miss - had romance and some humor. I highly recommend.
Second chance love.......2006-07-10
I like second chance love stories and this one is no exception. At least we did not have the usual 'hero and heroine fall out over some misunderstanding drama' which is a change. This is a nice, refreshing, sensual love story of a man wanting and getting the woman he loved and lost and a son in the proces. The only thing is I wondered how the average 10 year old would feel being manipulated,it would have been more interesting if he found out and what is response would have been
Book Description
Alison Dare is not your typical 12-year-old. But despite all the strict rules at the school, Alison and her best pals -- Wendy and Dot -- somehow manage to get into adventures that rival those of Alison's globetrotting, planet-saving relatives.

Cute!.......2006-09-21
Dare Wright, The Kitten's Little Boy (Four Winds, 1971)
My wife looked this one over when I brought it home. When she was finished, she seemed profoundly disturbed. This is why I always hide the Lonely Doll books when I bring them home, I guess, because that way lies madness.
This one's cute, actually, with lots of pictures of baby kittens. Our hero meets a little boy, and the two immediately like one another. The kitten's mother is not at all happy about this, because she doesn't see where a kitten should be in any way subservient to a human, and tells him why. He then comes up with an inventive way to both placate his mother and indulge in his friendship with the boy.
There's the potential to read all kinds of weird subtext into this tale. Which is pretty much a given for any book by Dare Wright. But, that said, the kitten's a lot cuter than the doll. ***

No spanking, Great photos in NYC, environmental and community oriented.......2007-04-24
The Edith Doll books get a lot of criticism for their old school methods of punishment (spanking and talk of hating). Thie book is one that will stand the test of time in my opinion. Edith and Little Bear want to stay in NYC, but Mr Bear thinks the city is no longer a health place to raise children. Good plot. The two little ones do their best to clean up the city. The photos and their logic is heart warming. It could be used to inspire youth today to take a part in cleaning up their neighborhood. In the end, Mr Bear is won over by their efforts and commitment to the city and their community. Historically there are great photos of old cars, central park, and the original twin towers (minus the build up high rises around it).
The pictures should hacve been tinted... GREEN!.......2006-04-21
Dare Wright, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand (Random House, 1972)
Mr. Bear, Edith, and Little Bear live in a thinly-disguised Manhattan. Mr. Bear is not happy with the dirt and stink of the city, so he hatches a plan: move to the country, where things are cleaner. Edith and Little Bear aren't too happy with this idea, to say the least, so they decide that if they clean up the city, Mr. Bear will let them stay.
Like most of the Lonely Doll books, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand is somewhat transparent in its motivation, but its heart's in the right place. And turning the attentions of the readers away from the interpersonal relationships among the admittedly odd family and towards outside influences for a change is refreshing. Most of all, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand, unlike most save-the-earth style juvenile storylines, is an eminently believable one; Edith and Little Bear do, in this book, about as much as real dedicated children would be able to do, instead of performing superhuman tasks.
My favorite Lonely Doll book, even if you do know that things, as always, are destined not to end well. (If you've already read Edith and Midnight, you know why.) *** ?

Only a few nuclear weapons fell. But in the chaos of famine and plague, there existed a few pockets of order. The strongest of them was the state of Deseret. The climate has changed, and the lake has filled up. There, on the fringes, brave, hardworking pioneers are making the desert bloom again.
Customer Reviews:
Good idea but too much Mormon.......2006-12-29
I liked the story concept but the Mormon stories are too much. Stick with the Ender's books. This book should be placed on the religious fiction shelf.
Short story collection set in not-so-distant future.......2005-02-19
The reviews to this book have not been so glowing. Obviously, you need to know what you are getting into - this is a collection of 4 or 5 short stories set in a future where a nuclear war has dramatically altered everyone's way of life. Some of the stories are very good. Some are just average. I would recommend it, especially if you're Mormon.
Definitely not Ender's Game.......2004-12-10
This book is actually a series of stories. The stories are actually well written, but the religious theme and what happens to some of the kids in them lead me to not recommend this book unless you are prepared to spend a sleepless night or two! Stick with Ender's Saga, Jay.
If only I had known ..........2004-03-21
I loved the Ender saga. I loved the Alvin books. I absolutely love apocalyptic fiction. If only I had read the epilogue, in which OSC describes this novel as LDS-fiction. Latter Day Saints fiction, in my book no more read-worthy than Christian fiction. Unfortunately, I was 40 pages into the novel and getting disgusted by the Saint this, Brother that, Lord and baptism this, before I scanned ahead to see if this was just current-character characterization. Nope. This is a religious book, not a very good one at that, and I doubt I'll bother reading the rest.
Mormons save America?.......2004-02-11
In This collection of stories, not quite short stories and not quite novellas, we see the world after a great war which has thrown the world into chaos and turmoil. Many are still dying, and outside small cities where local governments rule and help maintain order, the bandits on the roads rule with terror.
However, in Utah, the Mormons are building civilization out of chaos and forming government.
The stories were somewhat interresting, however, deeply disturbing. I can't say I cared much for the horrid descriptions of terrible child neclect and abuse in the first story, even though the rest of the story was ok, certain sections left me feeling sickened and disturbed for days afterwards and having more than usual urges to go make sure my kids were tucked in and safely sleeping at night. It also had disturbing paralells to a local case I remember of child neglect/abuse of a little girl who was locked in a closet for years.
The other stories are less emotion-enducing...as there's not really much to them. Basically people trying to fit into the Mormon run society and find thier place within, espically those who are not Mormon.

Wodnerfull book from a great teacher!.......2007-09-05
I had the delight of taking John Main's classes at the Yoga Tree when I lived in the Haight in 2002. I just re-ordered thsi book to read it again, my first on being purchased from the Yoga Tree. His honesty and simple, straight on writing and thoughs are inspiring and make for a great, motivating book.
The Urban Mystic.......2007-07-15
As a relatively new yogi, I found Darren's book to be a fascinating read of the Eight Limbs. I hadn't a clear understanding of each until I read Darren's words. Not only do I feel a much deeper understanding of each limb, but I am able to deepen my practice. Darren's book was as wonderful as he is a person! Thanks, Darren.
Amazing Real Yoga Book.......2007-06-22
I have tried to read many books about yoga and the eight limbs, but for the most part, I usually get frustrated and feel disconnected and quit. Darren Main has done something very unique. He has woven some of the more difficult concepts (and quotes from those "frustrating" books) and brought it all down to earth. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to deepen their practice, but not quite ready to isolate themselves in to the wilderness. It is a great easy read and really inspiring.
-highly recommend-.......2007-06-18
For me, this is one of those books that you cant wait to finish so you begin reading it again. Darren has a unique talent for bringing ancient yogic philosophy into modern day terms. I just attended his 3 day workshop in Denver. I am inspired to say the least.
The road to being an urban mystic.......2007-03-30
Darren gives you insight in how one can practice yoga and spirituality while living the modern life. His stories with playfulness and compassion, illustrate how we can stay on the path. You can feel his warmth come through his writing. Urban Mystic is delightful to read and always brings a smile to my face.
