3 out of 5 stars Interesting Yiddish literature but.........2004-06-30

Sholem Aleichem's collected stories titled "Teyve's Daughters" has a few interesting things to say about Jews and their lives, but it reads a bit awkwardly, and well..Teyve is only in about a third of the stories. The rest is totally unrelated to Teyve and his seven daughters. The Teyve chapters are among the best, with the dairyman helping his daughters in spite of his notions of being rich. He loves his daughters, and becomes estranged from one of his daughters, Chava, for marrying a gentle.

4 out of 5 stars Good stories but..........2002-11-01

I was disapointed that the book had much less to do with Tevye's daughters than the title led me to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Tevye's Daughters Meaningful Now As It Was Then.......2000-07-31

Most of the stories were written by Sholem Aleichem in the early 1900's. They are about Tevye, the dairyman and his daughters and Jewish life in a small town in Russia. Some of the stories became the basis of "Fiddler on the Roof". The very best story is "Chava" about his daughter who marries out of the faith. It is a real tea-jerker."Modern Children" and "Hodel" will also hit home, today. This book gives the reader a picture of what it was like to live in a small town in Russia, as a Jew, one hundred years ago. Sholem Aleichem writes in a clear, easy to read style, with compassion and understanding of human emotions. The translation is an excellent one. A must read for young and old even if you are not Jewish.

                  Setting: Rawlings, Oklahoma, 1945

                  Sensuality: 7

Johnny Henry returns from World War II to a boisterous hero's welcome, but the only face he really wants to see is that of his estranged wife, Kathleen. Craving assurance that he is alive and well, Kathleen watches him from afar, never realizing that he searches the crowd for her. After the parade is over, Johnny struggles to rebuild his life and deal with his love for Kathleen--a love that he is convinced is now forbidden. For her part, Kathleen's heart is breaking as she's often thrown into Johnny's company in the small ranching community of Rawlings, Oklahoma. The tragedy that tore the couple apart before Johnny shipped out for the Pacific still haunts them both. And the depth of misunderstanding that lies between them seems insurmountable until Kathleen's life is threatened and Johnny is forced to confront his fears.

Garlock offers a keen insight into the mores and character of 1940s middle America in this post- World War II novel. Blue-collar workers and the rural atmosphere blend well with the hint of deranged obsession that threatens the heroine in this fourth and final of Garlock's books set in Oklahoma. --Lois Faye Dyer

1 out of 5 stars bad bad bad book.......2007-05-17

i am a big fan of the second world war periode so i was very exited about this book.
i think it's the first time where i hate a hero so much i wish the writer had killed him!
i do not understand what Kate saw in him !!!!! he was stupid and whiney .
if you love a good WW2 book try "the blue bicycle" from deforges
                  AVOID !

4 out of 5 stars A Surprise From Dorothy Garlock.......2006-04-20

This turned out to be a suspense Historical Romance which I found refreshing. I enjoyed reading the book so much that I had a hard time putting it down to go into the doctor's office!
I believe that you could read this as a single book without having read the three prior books because I had read them months ago and forgotten the plots!!! It was a delightful read. My only reason for not giving it five stars was the use many times of bad words and God's name in vain. I don't usually oontinue reading books I find these words in but I did this one as it was good and overlooked those words. I hope Ms. Garwood realizes a good book can be written without use of such language.

4 out of 5 stars WWII boys come home.......2003-01-09

Well, it was good that I was able to pick up a story that was the last of the series and go with it. Sometimes if you read a series out of sequence, you're lost and disheartened. But this was easy to step into.
Its the story between a half Cherokee war hero and his wife, a red headed writer of Westerns. Seems they were miscommunicating on the death of their child. He shipped off to war and she would never forgive him---or would she?
It seems a theme for Garlock to have an obsessed dude running around through the story. He provides the suspense in the end.
After reading several of her books, I can say that that part and the everpresent some-woman-is-getting-beat-by-her-man is starting to make me uninterested. I don't know how her faithfuls put up with it. Maybe this is teaching her readers that if you're abused and reading romances, its time to leave him.
Or maybe its to educate the readers on how much abuse is out there. Whatever the case, its present in all the stories I've read.
Back to Kathleen and Johnny--well, this romance seems to drag on through the book. Not much happens in the meantime until she gets kidnapped by the obsessed dude.
The highlight was the post-war stuff and the usual period detail prevalent in Garlocks stories. After reading "House on a Hill," which was so good, this was a bit of a let down. But go for it anyway!

                  5 out of 5 stars A great end to a great series!.......2002-04-09

We fell in love with Kathleen and Johnny Henry in With Heart. This story picks up seven years later. The war is over, but their battle for their love isn't. They've loved, and they've lost. It's time to discover if their love is strong enough to weather those losses and move on to discover something new...together.

Dorothy Garlock shines in this spectacular series! My only complaint...that it had to end.

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Garlock couldn't get enough of this couple either!!!.......2001-11-18

I don't think Ms. Garlock could get enough of Johnny and Kathleen Henry either, as she created another masterpiece centered around this couple! I read this book in 2 days, and found it to be just as good or maybe better than the previous book, "With Heart." I don't know what I'll do without reading about the people in this family... It was really easy to grow to love these fictional characters, and I long for more!! I hope Ms. Garlock continues with some of the other characters in this book. READ THIS BOOK... YOU'LL BE IN LOVE WITH JOHNNY AND KATHLEEN HENRY, TOO!!!

5 out of 5 stars A thought-inspiring classic that never goes out of date........2007-09-02

This short story collection is more than I bargained for. I was looking for something that I could read every now and then, finish over time--something with girth that I can come back to. Only part of that's true--I come back to it regularly, but I finish it every time. These engrossing stories are delectably various, but an absolute joy to follow. No two are the same or even really cover the same area, but they all feel like they're on the same level of understanding. An absolute must-read for anyone that has ever liked a science fiction story. Get it.

This book is interesting not just because the stories are good, but it's also interesting to look at stories that depict a future that has since passed.

This little book has some intresting sc-fi tales,I stumbled across it in a small ass town and got it very cheap and it's not disappointing at all.

                              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-07-12

If you enjoy SciFi then this one's for you. These are obviously very short stories since 50 of 'em are crammed into such a small book - but many of them have a hidden depth that transcends their brevity. Some are deeply philosophical, and many contain clever Rod-Serling-esque twists at the end. Very highly recommended. Turn off the TV and read this instead.

5 out of 5 stars The best SciFi collection ever.......2005-05-02

This book was my first scifi short story collection. I was given it when I twelve by my great aunt. It is so incredibly classic and so powerful, it probably slanted me toward sciences even more than I had been.

If you enjoy Gardner Dozois (editor) anthologies, you'll love this. If you think Dozois' anthologies are sometimes weak, well... you've got Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, and Leiber to name a few in this 1963 packed paperback. The only regret you will have is that there are only 287 pages.

A perennial bestseller, APPLYING ETHICS introduces students to ethics via a well-proven formula of engaging commentary, seminal readings, and thought-provoking cases drawn from a wide range of contemporary social debates. Providing readers with a basic overview of the most important ethical theories in chapter one, each subsequent chapter takes a contemporary ethical issue as its focus. Guided by the authors' extensive introductions, and readings exhibiting divergent positions, and particularly timely cases, APPLYING ETHICS provides students with a model for considering critically many of the ethical dilemmas that abound in contemporary life.

4 out of 5 stars introduction with depth.......2000-11-05

Applying Ethics is a wonderful introductory text. My freshmen enjoy it as compared to other books because of its readable essays, helpful outlines, and current examples; while I appreciate its logical depth and comprehensiveness. Excerpts of major philosophers were selected carefully to provide a representative glimpse of a theory without overwhelming the new student. The editors were wisely unafraid to select topical essays which sometimes take a more unusual and philosophically solid position on a 'popular' issue. Topical overviews are concise and precise, while outlining all major positions. My only criticism is that Olen fails to present Rawls himself before providing Bayer's critique (which is, by the way, sufficient reason in itself to buy the book).
