    Book Description

Tabula rasa: (Latin: scraped tablet or clean slate) A reference to an epistemological thesis that we aren't born with mental content; that we are "blank", and that our entire spectrum of knowledge is gradually instilled in us from our perceptive and interactive experiences of the outside world. With this intensity in mind, Joel Weston takes us on an emotional journey through his experiences in the romantic sphere of his life. Through these poems and stories he adds color to a blank and lifeless canvas, urging us to see the gradient shades of life through his experiences. This collection of stories and poems is Joel's third and most complete literary achievement which adds the final note to a line of thought previously explored within the books, "Words on Paper" and "X-Stasis and Other Lovers". With this collection Joel comes to the end of a road and invites you to join with him as he looks back upon a lifetime of experiences and pays tribute to our greatest emotional experience: Love.

    Book Description

Meet arson investigator Billy Nightingale and his brother-in-law, Officer Sebastian Bly, who are called in to investigate a house fire that killed two young children. Suspicious details at the fire scene-and the discovery of a baby hiding underneath the porch-put Billy and Sebastian on the trail of a murderous mother while Sebastian and his wife, Annie, raise baby Meredith without revealing her dangerous and frightening past.

Meredith grows up to be a promising young ballerina- her ambitions fueled in part by the fictional past that Sebastian and Annie have invented for her. But the truth threatens their charmed family circle as Merry's biological mother returns to finish what she started.
Tabula Rasa is not only a gripping and entertaining crime novel but also a sensitive, warm exploration of the deeper issues of what defines a family and an individual.

    3 out of 5 stars Just okay.......2006-12-05

While I appreciate the imagination and uniqueness of this book, I feel it lacked a certain depth and groundedness. I did a little nail-biting toward the end, but otherwise, I just kept waiting to be entertained. The author went around in circles for a bit too long early on, likely trying to paint a picture of the characters. I generally enjoy stories with strong character development, but it seemed to add far too much information, and I wasn't sure which direction the author was going. Of course, that's sometimes part of the fun, but in this case, I found it a bit tedious. Much of the plot was simply too far-fetched to be believable or shocking. But for sheer uniqueness and imagination, this book may be what you're looking for.

... Edith is soon put away, Annie and Billy adopt and name the baby Meredith and, through Book Two, life is so idyllic as Meredith grows up to be a dancer, you begin to think Reuben is writing a soap opera. But, stay. You're being seduced by a very capable writer. Author Reuben has a demonically inspired way of taking us back to the realm of the mystery-thriller, intensified by a stratagem I can only describe as arch. Effectively so.

    5 out of 5 stars Fire!.......2005-08-11

I loved it. Loved the tone. So entertaining! Such fun! And it's a horror story besides with a truly frightening person lurking. Very engaging story with people you will love. Written by an honest-to-goodness Private Eye who specializes in arson, so the theme is Fire, and while you are enjoying the story, you'll learn a lot about fires too.

    5 out of 5 stars Tabula Rasa.......2005-08-05

Give Shelly Reuben, author of Tabula Rasa, a blank slate and watch out! Her latest novel will have readers clamoring for moral support before they are able to face the climax of this multilayered, complex, thoughtful, heart tugging, mind numbing, finger biting mystery. Reuben's tale of arson is a mystery in more than just the conventional whodunit sense of the word. Tabula Rasa explores the mystery of enduring love, unflinching loyalty, and above all, hard gained wisdom. Reuben reminds us good can be found everywhere if only one is prepared to look for and nurture it. Reuben's book leaves us spellbound by the triumph of beauty, happiness, and life itself. From the darkness, she leads the reader and her characters to the light that will warm us until they appear again with the publication of her next book.

    4 out of 5 stars A Scintillating Read!.......2005-08-04

Arson investigator Billy Nightingale, on a ride-a-long with his brother-in-law Sebastian Bly, a state trooper, is called to the "ugly" house in Sojourn. Two young children are dead as a result of a house fire.

It is soon apparent that another child had been in the house, but the two men are unable to locate that child. The dead children's mother, Edith Tuttle, while upset over her children's death, fails to mention the missing child. But the reader knows that Edith didn't even bother naming the one-year-old missing girl following her birth. She is known only as "Baby Tuttle" and is an unusual child-one who never smiles or cries; only stares with her dark, penetrating eyes.

Nightingale is not only concerned about the missing child; he believes the fire is suspicious. He begins searching for answers and soon discovers a quiet but terrified child under the ugly house where she crawled to save herself. What Nightingale and Bly discover means Baby Tuttle will need a permanent home as her mother will have her own semi-permanent home for many years to come.

Billy's sister, Annie and husband Sebastian adopt the child (Merry) and the years pass without incident. When Merry, at age eleven, becomes interested in her history, Billy and the Bly's concoct a fantasy history to protect Merry from her horrific past. But a letter Merry mails inadvertently sets into motion a series of events that will threaten her and her family years later when Merry is a fledgling ballerina.

Armchair Interviews says: Tabula Rasa, by Shelly Reuben is simply terrific! The characters are well drawn, complex and unique. The plot is both horrifying and scrumptious with fascinating information about arson, adoption, dancing and the consequences of an obsessive quest and the lies told to protect a loved one. It is scintillating and an absolute must read!

        Book Description

A consistent, comprehensive, rational and consequent worldview and universal perspective. The book seeks to offer the reader an unbiased, unmortgaged look at the way things really are, without any preconceptions, entrenched traditions, beliefs, or hypocrisy. It provides some deep reading for those interested in the bigger questions of life. This book encourages the seeker of fact to consider the deeper questions of existence with a tabula rasa (clean slate) devoid of preconceived notions for an updated, more accurate understanding of truth. Throughout history, people and institutions have believed many different things about truth. We are living in an age hundreds and thousands of years after some of philosophies and religions great thinkers, and the author makes the case that we should be able to recognize, define and understand the true nature of things a lot more clearly by now. There are serious thinkers who are not happy and content with the way truth has been defined according to these old traditions, creating a need for fundamental philosophical redirection. By forgoing archaic traditions, superstitions, and preconceptions, readers are led to separate fiction from fact to come to grips with the realization of the way things really are.

I had the opportunity to attend a Tabula Rasa workshop with Kathy Curry in February. The technique is amazing and easy to use. I had been working for some time on getting to the bottom of various emotional issues, and had tried a multitude of techniques, both through traditional medicine and more holistic approaches. After the workshop, I had a breakthrough when I recovered memories that previously I only had bits and pieces of to puzzle over. I used the technique on myself by first grounding myself, and then visualizing my "inner child" and grounding her...by using the communication balance, I was able to finally get her to tell me what was going on. The effect on my emotional state, AS WELL AS my physical health, was astounding. I have since used the technique both on myself and on others with positive results. I am now a certified Tabula Rasa practioner and look forward to sharing this technique with others!

This book is life changing. If you believe in the saying, "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear" this is the book for you. After reading the book and applying some of the processes, it has been a life changing experience. Not only for myself, by my children as well. There is a lot to be said about looking within, verses looking outside for a solution. Especially as it relates to your health and emotions. This book will start you on the right track and take you on a journey that will be forever life changing. Thank you Kathy Curry.

I really enjoyed this story. For the most part it was well-written. For the sake of the bet, I guess the two-week time frame made sense, but if it weren't for that, I would have thought it was rushed. All in all, a great story that I would read again.

Ever wondered about your first crush? What would have happened if you two got together? Well, Claire finds out years later when she is reunited with her crush, Duncan. Their chemistry is H-O-T and they are able to bring out the best in each other. Throw in protective family members, a gold-digging friend and a bet and you will have a wonderful romantic story.

3 out of 5 stars He Makes Me Feel Brand New.......2005-08-04

Former child prodigy and renowned scientist Claire Scott is smarter than most of the world's inhabitants and she does not have a problem letting others know. Currently developing a cure for ovarian cancer, Claire is reunited with foes from high school and a friend who has something to hide in THE WAY HE MAKES ME FEEL by Tamara Sneed.

Raised by her older sister and father, Claire began high school at age eleven and was always fascinated with the sciences. This love sent her to Harvard and subsequently MIT, and she has won rave reviews for her work. Settling outside of Los Angeles, she only has time for her research and her immediate family. Unbeknownst to her, a chance encounter puts her in the midst of a bet with player Duncan Hillston and danger with her girlfriend Annabelle.

Claire was dubbed Medusa in school because of her age, bookworm appearance and her knowledge of science. Because of Duncan's tales of pummeling the opposite sex, his goal is to get Claire to fall in love with him and win the trip of his dreams. If he fails, he must admit to his friends, who have suffered years of listening to his tales, he is a first-rate liar at an upcoming block party. Duncan has two weeks to achieve this feat.

An interesting and daring story, THE WAY HE MAKES ME FEEL has fully developed characters, and through their musings we are able to capture their ups and downs of the past and the present. Sneed has included important family members, who matter, to further develop the characterizations. Other characters add the right element to this story with their humor and their strangeness. At times the plot is implausible however, the story is filled with intrigue, where rules are made to be broken. Included is a setting that is quaint, while fast-forwarding to extravagant.

I really hadn't read a good romance in a long time, so this book was a welcomed surprise. I had only read Yoral Vow by Tamara and really wasn't impressed with that one. But this book was great from start to finish. Duncan was just a player and Claire thought a good evening was spent in her lab. Put them both together and they were combustible. The sex scenes were hot, but even better the love building between the two had me warm in all the right places. Definitely a book that I will place on my bookshelf and read a few more times.

The cover and title of this novel, and even the first couple of chapters, make it seem like a story in the vein of Spider Robinson. But it gets dark-- very dark, and pretty sad. While he was writing this, Brust must have been having romantic troubles or something, because the novel is very cynical and pessimistic about love and the relationship between men and women.

All in all, the novel was a downer, and the conclusion didn't seem to merit the sacrifices I had to make along the way. Much more bitter than sweet.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - it's all about the characters.......2005-10-28

All good books are based on characters. No matter how good or bad the plot, if the characters aren't well developed and interesting, the book sucks. This book has great characters, fairly archetypal, but still well rounded and interesting.

As with all Brust books, this a mystery in the Arthur Conan Doyle/Sherlock Holmes style. Whether set in a fantasy or SciFi, the setting is just local color to flavor the meat of the book - solving the mystery.

This is one of those books I re-read about once a year. I always pick up something new each time I read it. The first time you read it, you might find it hard to keep up with all the characcters (four who work for the bar, four who live in the bar, and four ~bad guys.) With all mystery books, it's a fun read to see who dun it and why - it's not about defining the bad aspects of society who drove some charcters into the story line (although this IS explained...)

I'd recommend this or any Taltos book to anyone - regardless of if you read SciFi/Fantasy or not (I usually don't...) His local color is amazing - refined to the level of Twain or O Henry. The only downside is Brust clear obsession with hungarian cooking, as he pretty much lists each and every meal the charcters have in minute detail. This part gets on my nerves, but I'm not a foodie, so that's a big reason - but regardless, it's not annoying enough to spoil the yarn Brust spins.

This book would make a GREAT movie.

3 out of 5 stars Jammin' Down the Space-Time Continuum.......2004-07-16

Brust is justly known for his Vlad Taltos fantasy series, and he has written several other books outside of that series that are well worth reading. This book is somewhat of a departure for him, being more science fiction oriented than fantasy.

The main building block of this book is a rather unique restaurant that moves itself through space and time whenever a nuclear weapon is exploded in its near vicinity. Inside the restaurant is an Irish folk-song band that accidentally was caught up during the restaurant's first move. As the plot develops and the restaurant makes several moves through time and to other planets, the band begins to realize that they are part of an attempt to change future history by opposing a group that keeps going around starting nuclear wars. Not a bad concept, but it does lead to somewhat episodic patches, rather than being a linear whole.

Much of the characterization comes through as individual flash-backs to defining events in their lives; present time dialogue and interaction with others is somewhat flimsy, but overall there is certainly enough `reality' to these characters to carry the story. Of course, as a band, their music intrudes in several places, which certainly provides some atmosphere, but I found Brust's description of some of this quite a bit over my head, not being a musician myself. I've run into this same problem with Emma Bull (who was a member of the same band as Brust) and Spider Robinson - it is simply very difficult to describe in written language what is almost totally an aural experience, but I'll give him good marks for a decent stab at trying.

While the final resolution of the story made sense and was satisfying, I found that the basic motivation/rationale behind the war starting group just did not seem adequate justification for their actions. As this is central to the basic story, this is a fairly major flaw.

Still, it's an enjoyable read, though not up to the standards he set in the Taltos set.

4 out of 5 stars An unexpectedly sweet and moving story........2004-03-16

An unexpectedly sweet and moving examination of folk-music, young love, life on the road, and the Meaning of Life inside a standard, rather pro-forma sci-fi time-travel adventure. I liked it quite a bit. FENG is a pleasant and entertaining way to pass a few hours. "B+"

Note that the very cool cover (by James Gurney) is a bit misleading as to the actual *contents* (revealing why would be a spoiler), but it did induce me to pick up the book, and it's really neat art, so Gurney (& Tor) get points for doing their jobs right. Whoever is the art director there gets a vote of thanks from me, as even minor Tor authors usually get tasteful, attractive, relevant covers. Not to mention clean and attractive interior layouts. Bravo!

Brust's comment on FENG: "Not one of my better efforts, I think, but there are bits of it I like. It started out to be funny, developed a serious side, and I was never able to get the elements to blend the way I wanted them to. Grumble grumble. It's always pleasent to run into someone who liked this book; it means that I can still do all right when I'm not on my game." --from dreamcafe.com

1 out of 5 stars Quick, let's take a few quotes from Screwtape, publish it seperately, and call it a new book!!!!.......2007-10-06

Oh look, a new C. S. Lewis book! But didn't he die in 1963. So how is this a new book?

Well, Walter Hooper, his lit. exector, has made a cottage industry in the last 40 years of publishing posthumous C. S. Lewis books, from little inconsequentials (such as this) to more substantial works. Over the years these posthumous publications have come under heavy fire as being suspect or counterfeit works, or changed or badly edited. I've read one version of Screwtape where Lewis references the books of a particular writer (don't remember who), and in this newer publication Hooper changed the writer to Lewis. Bad, bad, bad, Mr. Hooper.

Such is the case here. All this book amounts to is a few quotes from THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS. That's it. Screwtape Letters is a mere 160 pages. Why not buy the full book and just read it. Publications like this are just in poor taste.

Yes Virginia, this is no such thing as a "new" C. S. Lewis book. Just the publishers and Walter Hooper trying to squeeze out more money from his fans. Now, what would Screwtape say about Greed, Mr. Hooper?

1 out of 5 stars Paved with Profiteering Intentions.......2006-11-07

Beware of "new" books by authors who passed away in the 60s. Lewis' tireless literary executor and editor, Walter Hooper, incessantly repackages Lewis' writings and markets them as new books. Recombining and repackaging for new audiences is warranted under some circumstances. But why abridge "The Screwtape Letters," which weighed in at a scant 160 pages to begin with? Buy the original; "Paved with Good Intentions" is not.

This is just a cheap quick money making scheme by publishers. They took a few excerpts from the Screwtape letters and called it a new book. For the same amount of money and sometimes less you could get the real complete book. Don't waste your time with this wasteful volume.
