Well Worth Reading.......2006-01-05
I had never heard of the novel Salome of the Tenements, or even the author Anzia Yezieraska, when I was assigned the novel in a graduate class last semester. The rest of the students in the class hadn't either. Upon reading the book, however, I discovered that such ignorance is tragic. Salome of the Tenements is a fascinating work that should certainly be more widely known.
The novel is the sometimes-melodramatic story of Sonya, a Russian Jewish immigrant. She falls in love with John Manning, a philanthropic American millionaire. The chronicle of the rise and fall of this relationship reveals much about the poor immigrant experience in America. Additionally, the novel comments philosophically on the failure of love, the difficulty of obtaining spiritual fulfillment, and the difficulties of attaining identity in Modernist America.
There is so much that is interesting about the novel. It's wonderful to see it in print. Hopefully, it will begin to reach a much wider audience.
Not on par with the rest of Yezierska's work.......1998-11-20
Salome is a very uplifting novel. The characters are well developed and the plot is interesting, however, Yezierska relies on a far-fetched outcome. While this is an enjoyable read, I wasn't as touched as I was with Bread Givers and Yezierska's other works. The love story relies on overdone and sometimes cheesy themes that are predictable, although interesting.
For those who love Yezierska, this is something you should definitely read. For newcomers, I feel that BreadGivers would be more gripping.

Poignant and almost perfect.......2007-09-17
While this is an earlier work from Brown, her potential as a prominent romance writer was evident. I won't summarize the storyline as that has been done repeatedly on previous reviews. I'd like to talk about the one flaw that bothered me in this book and that was adultery--adultery against a very likeable character. I would have altered the storyline just a little and not have them betray Seth, whom they both liked. The ending was nicely done but bittersweet due to the necessary death of Seth. I gave this book 5 stars because it was written well and I found it difficult to put down and pretty much read it in one sitting.
The Silken Web.......2007-02-24
ISBN 0446364797 - This has got to be one of the hardest books for me to review yet. That's not because it's so good that I'm shocked speechless; it's not because it's so BAD that I'm at a loss for words - it's really that it's a combination. This is a really good, touching story... and some of the worst writing I've come across in a long time.
Kathleen was an orphan who found people she loved in B.J. and Edna, the people who ran the Mountain View Encampment, which was open to orphans like herself. As an adult, she returned to Mountain View as a counselor and B.J. and Edna were thrilled to have her. What they didn't know was that she'd quit her job, running away from a male co-worker who'd been coming on too strong.
Erik Gudjonsen was a videographer who came to Mountain View to do a piece about the place. He and Kathleen follow the path of all romance novel couples. They meet and clash, end up spending time together and fall in love, have sex and then tragedy strikes. Erik is badly injured in an accident and taken to a hospital where Kathleen sits, waiting for information when Mrs. Gudjonsen is shown directly into Erik's room. Unaware that this is his sister-in-law, and not bothering to ask, Kathleen flees without a word to anyone.
She finds work far away, working for Seth Kirchoff of Kirchoff's Department Stores - a paraplegic with a sense of humor and a heart of gold. When she wants to quit her new job because she's found out she's pregnant, he asks her to marry him. They wed and Erik's son is raised as Seth's own, sharing with his "parents" a wonderful, happy life until one day, in a strange twist of fate, Seth hires a man to make commercials for the stores - and that man is Erik.
Despite the ridiculousness of it, it's common in romance novels for people to meet and fall in love in under 48 hours, and certainly to wind up having sex. Especially when one of those people is a 25 year old virgin. If you've held onto your virginity that long, of course you're going to lose it to the first man to take you skinny dipping while you're supposed to be responsible for the well-being of a group of children. That's really not the worst of the book. The worst is that lines such as "The other young man had stood up in hopes of making a show of self-defense, but his belly was plowed into with an iron fist, and then, as he leaned over in agony, he, too, knew the rocketing pain of Erik's punch to his jaw." crop up, highlighting Brown's poor skills.
The sex scenes are even more badly done than that, with some of the most incredibly stupid things coming out of the mouths of Brown's characters. "Oh, Erik, I can't believe that you're touching me this way." "Believe it." and "Sweet...!" he grated. "You've always been ready for me, Kathleen. Oh, God, I thought my memory had embellished how good it was with us, but it hadn't. If anything, my love, the memory was diluted." made me laugh out loud - and not in a good way. On page 88, Kathleen refers to Erik as "vital to her life" - after knowing him for THREE DAYS!
Sadly, the story really IS good. Seth's unselfish handling of every aspect of his life, from his disability to raising Kathleen's son as his own, makes his final, most selfless act that much more touching. That Kathleen has a history of running away from problems makes Seth's suggestion of marriage more palatable - otherwise, it's impossible to believe that any two people would marry, love each other, and live sexlessly on separate floors of the same house. If Brown had just left out the really bad sex scenes and developed certain plot points better, I'd be happy to five star this. As it is, two's all I can do.
A DISAPPOINTMENT.......2006-12-27
As much as I enjoy Sandra Brown's books, this one is below the mark. I wanted to strangle Kathleen towards the end.
I will stick with Brown's romantic thrillers.
Another dated retread shows its age - but better than most.......2006-04-22
Virginal camp counselor Kathleen has a torrid affair with Erik, a videographer (two days after meeting him, she has sex with the virtual stranger in the forest). After an life-threatening accident, she mistakenly thinks that he is married and rather than confront him about the woman visiting his hospital room (his sister), she slinks away and has their love child.
Fast forward several years, where she has moved on with her life, and as she is about to marry Seth her boss who is disabled and has taken care of her and her son all these years (though he is unable to perform in the bedroom). Suddenly Erik has returned to the fold and she learns the truth about his so-called "wife." She now finds herself in a bind - should she marry the man who loves her more than life itself, and has dedicated himself to her and her child, or should she choose the passion that she experienced with her one and only lover?
Unfortunately, author Brown has taken the cowardly way out by enabling the wimpy heroine to not to make that all important decision after all. It defininitely shows its age, but it will tug at your heartstrings nonetheless.
Hot and Steamy!.......2005-05-13
SILKEN WEB has to be one of the most romantic, sexually graphic and tantalizing books that I've read by Sandra Brown. This is the story of Kathleen who marries Seth, a rich man who can give her everything, except what she needs in bed (figures, huh?). Then Erik comes into the picture - Erik, who has women tumbling in and out of his bed, but would never think about marriage. SILKEN WEB is based on the decision Kathleen has to make - which man will she ultimately chose?
I'm surprised that SILKEN WEB doesn't combust into flames on the shelf! This is definitely not for a pre-teen to read. SILKEN WEB could induce the reader to take several cold showers and be considered a heavy breather while reading! Sexually graphic scenes are meant to arouse the reader, and Sandra Brown shows the world that her books can be hot!

From the first paragraph, I was on a journey with these characters. They were entertaining, loving and the hero was every woman's dream come true. Walker is my favorite brother so far in this series. If you havent read Delicious, get a copy of that book also.

The eagerly-awaited sequel to The Heritage of Hastur and Sharra's Exile. Margaret Alton, daughter of the Darkovan representative to the Terran Imperial Senate, remembers almost nothing about the planet of her birth or her tumultuous childhood. What fleeting memories she has are fragments of terror -- a strange silver man and a screaming woman with hair that circled her head like a ring of fire. back jacket summary.......2006-03-03
from the back cover of the April 1997 Daw paperback edition
cover illustration by Romas Kukalis
She was Margaret Alton, the daughter of Lew Alton, the Darkovan representative to the Terran Imperial Senate, but she remembered almost nothing about the planet of her birth, or her early and tumultuous childhood. What fleeting memories disturbed her sleep were fragments of terror-a strange silver man and a screaming woman with hair that circled her head like a ring of fire.
As soon as Margaret was of age, she fled her stormy home and took refuge on University where she was granted the position of assistant to a renowned musicologist. This prestigious job took her to many worlds, and when she was assigned to collect folk songs on Darkover, Margaret was curious and pleased.
But under the light of the red sun, Margaret's innocent excitement quickly waned. The world of her birth evoked long-buried memories, painful and terrifying, and she soon found herself driven by a destiny more dreadful than any nightmare. For the screaming woman and the silver man were merely markers on a trail - a trail which led into Margaret's own mind, and toward a trap which had been set for her centuries before her birth...
The Future unfurled.......2002-04-06
All though I do agree with the above author about the unconsistant genealogies in her series(I have encountered some of that in Mists of Avalon), focusing on that one fault ruins the impact and the refrencing of this book. the characters are there, before your eyes, acting out a life that you have always longed for while trying to avoid. Anyone who has had destiny put them in a maddening and unsuspected situation can relate to the main characters Margaret Alton and Mikhial Hastur/Lanart. I own this book and I can help but to read it over and over again because MZB shares JK Rowlings talent of holding little things in the book taht even the most careful of readers can't notice untill the fourth reading. This tale of our future is incredible and anyone even considering reading it should go ahead because it is anything but a waste of time.
A return to the great Darkover books.......2001-01-28
After the lackluster Rediscovery this book restored my confidence in MZB as a writer. As soon as I finished this book I wanted the next one in this trilogy within a series.
a great first book read.......2000-12-30
this is the first book of the darkover series i have read and i found it to be great. i read it in a day or so and true the plot does beg to be enhanced but i found the idea of this strong willed heiress who takes nothing in this male dominated societ intriguing. too many of the other people who read this got hung up on geneology and such things from the other book and simply couldn't enjoy the book. the only thing that troubled me was references to other, earlier books but i know that was to be expected. also people say that the "confrintation" in the middle of the book led to an aimless anticlimax which is completely untrue. you see the heroine struggle to find balance and try not to kill anyone with her "gifts" and the end made me run out for the next book. i admit that this is not a book for hardcore darkover fans but a very good book for someone new to the series.
Okay..but not as 'good as it gets'...........2000-06-13
Marion Zimmer Bradley is a wonderful author, but I'm sorry to say that she doesn't show the story development that she usually has. Her character development is still great, but not good enough for 4 or 5 stars.
The story of Margaret Alton is quite interesting. She goes to the planet of her birth and learns that she is a telepath with the "Alton Gift," among other gifts. The back-of-the-book-synopsis says that there's a 'trap that was set for her centuries before her birth,' and that was what interested me in the book. But the 'trap' is the gift. She learns that she has these things about half-way through the book, and then you are looking forward to this 'trap,' but that is the trap.
The characters are neat, but as for the story, it is weaker than it could have been. Nice try Ms Bradley...I'm still looking forward to other Darkover Novels (I've heard that this one isn't the best one of the bunch...)
Book Description
Using solid biblical exegesis, Chuck Lawless presents a well-rounded, proven model for fighting the enemy through the development of a spiritually healthy church. This unique book suggests workable strategies and resources for developing disciples prepared for spiritual warfare.
Customer Reviews:
Sensible, Scriptural Insight on Spiritual Warfare.......2004-04-10
Far too many books on the market today either deny or sensationalize spiritual warfare. Lawless here offers sensible, scriptural insight on the subject. His thoughts are grounded in the Bible yet illuminated by a heart and mind that are yielded to the Holy Spirit. His words are solid academically, yet very readable and understandable.
I've read many titles that are long on experience, short on theology and vice-versa. Lawless in this work strikes a fine balance. I recommend this title highly to all believers wanting to get a better understanding of the basics of spiritual warfare for the individual and for the local church.
Timely Truths About Spiritual Warfare.......2004-01-31
Dr. Lawless has developed a very practical masterpiece that guides the reader through precious truths about spiritual warfare. He applies the five church functions plus prayer, made popular by Rick Warren, to overcoming the bondage imposed by sin and the enemy of God. The book stresses the need for discipleship and training or equipping in the area of the full armor of God as presented in Ephesians 6:10-20.
This book reads very smoothly and the material presented can be easily comprehended. This book is a must read for church pastors. Both the experienced pastor and new ministers will benefit from reading and applying these principles.
The most refreshing part of this work is that these are universal principles. Many works that are written about spiritual warfare apply only historical accounts about experiences from someones past. Those experiences are important but are not universal. Dr. Lawless has used his expertise and God given talent to organize the material found in Discipled Warriors and I believe you, your family, your church, and your community will benefit greater from your ministry after you have read this book.
Building a Healthy Church.......2003-05-16
Numerous books are being written on the subject of church growth. The book was written because of the author's desire to see churches be strong enough to win the battles against Satan as they are growing. Three main ideas are raised. The first is that too little consideration is being given to the theological foundation. Without a well-grounded foundation the church that develops will be weak at best. A second concern is that prayer is often neglected in the wealth of strategies and methods. Spiritual realities can so easily be overlooked in the effort to "get something done," to increase the number of names on the church roll or the size of the budget. The third idea is that all too often discipleship is only a part of the purpose of the church. It becomes another program, not a life style.
There are 10 chapters in the book. Chapter 1 presents the foundation for a biblical model for a local congregation. Chapter 2 shows that discipleship is an over all goal to defeat the enemy through a disciplined lifestyle. Power-driven programs are not the answer. Chapters 3 through 8 concentrate on the six purposes of the local congregation. They provide much direction, the "how-to" for achieving the goals of growing Christians in growing churches. Chapter nine is titled "Leading in Charge Without Losing the Battle." This involves sincere prayer by those who are leading. And encouraging others to pray regularly. "Lead from your knees if you want to grow a church with discipled warriors." Chapter 10, "A Concluding Challenge," gives serious warning through stories of failure in spiritual warfare from the Bible. The call is first to holiness and then to the battle.
