Book Description
Northern Borders is Mosher's nostalgic novel of life in northern Vermont's Kingdom County, as told by a man remembering his boyhood. In 1948 six-year-old Austen Kittredge III leaves his widowed father to live with his paternal grandparents on their farm in the township of Lost Nation. Escapades at the county fair, doings at the annual family reunion and Shakespeare performance, and conflicts at the one-room schoolhouse are all recounted lovingly in this enchanting coming-of-age story filled with luminous memories and the deepest of childhood secrets, as a boy is molded into a man.

Northern Borders .......2005-01-30
Howard Frank Mosher is an exquisite story teller. His words are worth a thousand pictures. The reality of growing up on a rustic farm in northern Vermont during the 40's & 50's is made charmingly clear. Life on the farm is rough, yet idyllic. Where work is its own reward is a simple truth & the path to an honest existence. The only negative is the story ends!
To a Better Time.......2000-06-22
A very good book coming from a time long removed from what we currently have. It really defines the kind of people that settled this country or mayby not...... read the book
Nothern Borders is a Wonderful Book.......2000-03-20
I strongly recommend this heartwarming book written from a child's point of view in the beginning. Later on, as the boy grows, the reader gets acquainted with his myriad of experiences and encounters with various people and animals. In the end, the reader is filled with a sense of peace and serenity as all comes to a close. This book had me laughing, crying, smiling, cringing, and recalling the times of growing up.
A great read!.......1999-06-09
Mosher is a brilliant storyteller. His characters are too real to be fictional! This ranks as one of my top ten favorites.
Wonderful!.......1999-02-10
This is a great, fun, touching book. I absolutley loved it, and so have all the people whom I've given copies to. I have read all of Mosher's books, and while they're all very good, this is his best. I look forward to re-reading it while I wait impatiently for more from this excellent author.

Book Description
Stranded with her sexy ex . . . it's deja vu all over again
Even in a place called Shangri-La, shacking up with her gorgeous ex-fiancé wasn't career-driven Darcie Reed's idea of fun. But thanks to her crazy uncle's will, she has to live with Cameron Pierce for thirty days in the old homestead -- or watch a sizable fortune go to a talking cat named Lucky!
Tacky lawn ornaments, a homicidal housekeeper, her uncle's ghost and the damn cat are just the beginning. The real trouble in Shangri-La begins when sparks start to fly between Cameron and Darcie -- and the undeniable attraction they once shared threatens to come back to life with a vengeance.
Thirty days in Shangri-La just might be the longest month of Darcie Reed's tidy little life!
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing and hard to stick it out.......2006-05-02
Darcie wants to be taken seriously as a businesswoman; so much so that she broke her engagement when her fiance Cameron was not properly sympathetic after she resigned from a position due to sexual harassment nine months earlier. Well, she relocated and sure enough, is a victim all over again. At the reading of her eccentric uncle's will, she discovers that he has left his fortune to his cat, Lucky (yeah, that is one lucky cat!), with the stipulation that Darcie and Cameron co-habitate for 30 days in his psychedelic mansion (complete with flamingos and talking frogs), then they can decide how to split the fortune. If they cannot stick it out for 30 days, then his estranged half brother will inherit. Sounds easy - well, the kicker is that Lucky has to survive that 30 days too, and someone is determined to cut at least eight of his nine lives.
The story is chock full of amusing secondary characters, including a maid who looks and acts suspiciously like Frau Blucher from "Young Frankenstein" who provided sexual services for 30 years (only to be frozen out of the will); a clothing-challenged estate lawyer who always has a tee-time; and a couple that goes by Poobie and Pookie (that got old really quickly).
Michaels tries to keep the story light and breezy, but oftentimes, it is just downright annoying - particularly the conversations between the deceased uncle and the cat. I felt that the story was disjointed. On the one hand it was a romantic comedy with snappy dialog; on the other hand, it was a tongue in cheek paranormal that just didn't gel for me. There really is not a whole lot of mystery - you can see the baddie a mile away. This was tough one to get through - you might want to pick it up at the library instead.
Ribbit-Ribbit .......2006-04-09
This was a wacky murder mystery with twist of romance novel. The book starts off with the onwer (Uncle Horry) of the Shangri-La dieing and then becomes a ghost. Uncle Horry had set-up his will that his neice Darcie and her ex-fiance Cameron must live at the Shangri-La for 30 days protecting the cat. The problem is that someone wants the cat dead she Darcie and Cameron don't get the house or the money. If you enjoy ghost and mysteries and would also suggest Kate Angell such as `Crazy for you'.
Childish, but Fun.......2006-02-06
Darcie Reed's Uncle Horry has kicked the bucket, and his will is a doozy. If she wants to inherit his estate, called "Shangri-La," she has to live in the mansion for a month-with her ex, Cameron Pierce-and take care of Lucky, the cat. If anything happens to said feline, the whole enchilada goes to an obscure relative. She knew her uncle was eccentric, but the posthumous matchmaking did beat all.
Little does Darcie know that Uncle Horry's ghost is hanging around talking with his beloved Lucky. Horry means to get Darcie and Cameron together before he goes to meet the light, even if it means putting Lucky into some humiliating situations. If that's not enough, poor Lucky, a god among cats, of course, has to live in fear for his nine lives as someone is plotting against him.
In a voice as irrepressible as her cast of characters, Michaels paints a vivid picture of sophistication doused with a heavy layer of hilarity. Darcie's motivations were a little weak, and Cameron had a few childish moments almost on par with Uncle Horry. At times, these two flaws work, but at other times, they are a distraction.
While the characters aren't brilliant, each of them has enough depth to be interesting. In fact, the cat may have been the smartest one there. Unfortunately, the by-play between Horry and Lucky upstage the romance at times.
If you're looking for a madcap romantic comedy with more than a hint of naughtiness, "Stuck in Shangri-La" is worth the read.

Stuck in pergatory is more like it.......2006-01-09
This is the first book I've read by this author - and could quite possibly be the last. The writing isn't that bad but by page 100 I was so angry with these characters I seriously considered going on to another book even though I hate not finishing something once I've started reading it.
Stupid and Disturbed. That's the phrase that continually comes to mind when thinking about this story.
This is definitely not a romantic tale. There isn't a single character in it that is even likable, let alone loveable. Certainly not the two main characters who show absolutely no chemistry between them. Admittedly she's a bit scatter-brained but his dismissive treatment of her shouldn't be tolerated for a single second. And for her to find him kissing his ex-girlfriend not even 24 hours after they've had an argument should be enough to tell her that he's not the one for her. It should also be enough for him to realize that she's not the one for him either if his answer to an argument is to run out and start making out with someone else. We're talking about people in their twenties and thirties here, not their brain-addled hormone-raging teens.
I can only hope this book wasn't meant to be comedic because other than the various assaults on the lawn art by the characters there is nothing to laugh about here. The uncle's manipulation of his niece and her ex-fiancee are unforgivable and made me long for her to be able to tell the attorney where he could put this inheritance and walk away from it all. Especially with the uncle being in ghost form so he would be sure to know just how obnoxious she should have thought he was by coming up with such an abomination of a will. Any person with half a brain could have seen that such a will basically put a death sentence on the head of the poor cat, yet the uncle couldn't figure that out in the first place and the two main characters are continuously careless about the poor thing's well-being after the fact. And why would you saddle a niece you supposedly care about with the permanent presence of another person in what's supposed to become her home? That the housekeeper is a mean wretch on top of it is actually beside the point. And why would the niece invite two complete strangers to stay at the house based solely on a claimed relation? Disregard the fact that a potential heir is going to try and see that the conditions of the will go his or her way, either one of them could have turned out to be a homicidal maniac. That's not a smart move in anyone's book. (No pun intended.)
The only person in this story who is remotely likeable with a modicum of functioning grey cells is the cat!
This book left me with such a bad feeling that had it not been after 10:00 pm when I finished it, I would have immediately started another book just to get rid of the nasty aftertaste I had from this one. Thank goodness I picked it up from the library and don't have to feel bad about having spent money on buying it. I can actually feel good about returning it and getting it out of my house.
Can't get through it.......2005-11-23
I love Kasey Michaels, and I like paranormals, but I'm stuck on page 85. The characters are likeable enough, but they've been in love for months and only need to go through some "personal growth" (sorry for the pop psych phrase, but the obstacles could come straight from a self-help book, and are rather laboriously laid out) before they will be together. The rest of the book--the talking cat, the ghost, the will--feel like they were pasted in. They don't (so far, and I don't think I can read any more) add to the plot in any way.

Miles manages to graduate from the Academy. His reward? A first post on Kyril Island, predicting and combating the local weather and his commanding officer's homicidal moods. His reputation and stunted form further battered by both, Illyan finds a way to combine (sort of) Miles's two lives as Lord Vorkosigan and Admiral Naismith--great for Miles, but a little hard on his commanding officers.
Book Description
Miles Vorkosigan graduates from the Barrayaran Military Academy with high expectations of ship command but is disappointed with an assignment as meteorologist to an arctic training camp. There he narrowly averts a massacre between the trigger-happy base commander and mutinous recruits. Reassigned to investigate a suspicious military buildup near a wormhole nexus, he revives his undercover persona as mercenary Admiral Miles Naismith to negotiate between competing powers for control of the wormhole, to rescue the Emperor of Barrayar, and to watch his back for the arctic base commander seeking bloody vengeance.

After a brief stay under 'house arrest', Miles is re-assigned to investigate a suspicious military build-up near a wormhole nexus. Reviving his undercover persona as mercenary Admiral Miles Naismith, his routine information-gathering duty expands to a rescue mission when the Emperor of Barrayar disappears during a political conference on a nearby space station. Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Graduation is a cold experience.
Just out of the academy, and not the most popular preson with the conservative types, Miles get a crappy job in a remote polar location. He very soon gets into trouble via a murder, which he is accused of. Also, the young emperor has bailed in space. Miles has to get himself out of trouble and also do something about the missing royalty, with the odd dangerous woman and space war thrown in just to keep him on his toes.
More twists and turns that a runaway eel!.......2006-06-21
This is a fantastic book! Reading this one has made me want to read the rest of the series. Great writing, it appears I've come in somewhere after the beginning, but the book stands on it's own. The story... great plot twists, about every 15 pages. I guess it's only sci-fi because of it's setting, it's really an action/adventure book. That would be the only thing I would think anyone would find objectionable about it, where it's shelved. Just read it, you'll be glad you did.
Miles on the loose, everyone take cover!!.......2006-06-04
Being Aral and Cordelia's son Miles can't help but be honorable to self-destruction. After being put on trial for the six months that may take him to the bridge of the newest Barrayaran ship - the papers almost in his pocket - he has to throw all his hard-won military future for the sake of a bunch of techs and soldiers that refused to obey a criminal order and would've been destroyed but for Miles' unaknowledged sacrifice. Adrift again, Miles gets pinned in Illyan's chain of command, much to the grief of the later.
Miles' first mission is pretty simple: Keep eyes open and observe. Learn!
And he does that. In process of keeping his eyes open, he notices young Emperor Gregor in dire need of help after skipping his high duties. But Miles - being Miles - does everything with a florish... and recognized as the Betan-made Admiral Naismith by friendlies and foes alike, betrayed over and over again, he loses the Emperor, finds the Dendarii merc fleet again - and Elena - gets it back from the hands of his treacherous captains, dashes to the rescue and finds the whole Barrayaran army hot on his tale for the safety of the runaway Emperor.
This book reads itself! It left me breathless, wanting for more...
The addiction is set... To late now to do but keep the book :)
how can you not like bujold?.......2005-12-28
Although the Vor Game is second in the Miles series, it was originally written as two seperate stories. One for Analog, (weatherman) and the other to tie it into the series (gregors escape)Yes, it is lite reading(or listening) in that you don't have to think too much, but the days of hurting your brain ala Asimov have morphed into a sub-genre known as hard sci-fi. If you read hard sci-fi you won't like this book. It is character driven. If you like a good story, well told, with characters that linger to the point they've become a nerd category (like people who can quote the Princess Bride) read this. You'll like it. All Bujolds books are part of a story arc. ALL of them. (except the Chalion books and the spirit ring) You might not like it at first but you'll find yourself going back to it again and again because like a real person, Miles grows up, learns and gets better. And no. It's not a kiddie book. It's got no swearing and sex and gratuitous violence, but that doesn't make it a book for children. It makes it a rarity.
Excellent reading of a terrific book.......2005-12-19
If you know Bujold's Vor series, you know what great action/adventure books these are. If not, you're in for a treat--and this book happens to be a great place to get into the series, being the start of the Miles Adventures. If you've read it visually, trust me, listening only makes it better. This is unabridged--very important, for Bujold is an excellent writer who makes every word count. You'll love the characters (well, I do!). Definitely pick up a copy.

A Great Book Well Read.......2005-06-30
Miles Vorkosigan (The Vor at the beginning of his name means something like the German von, i.e. Count or other member of the nobility) has been a staple character of Ms. Bujold's for several years. In the Vor Game, told here on nine CD's, he has finally been allowed to complete training at his planet's Military Academy and gets his first assignment.
As you would expect he gets involved in a nefarious plot, barely escapes but solves the situation. From there he goes on to investigate a suspicious military build up that might mean their enemies are up to something, then the emperor disappears. All kinds of sub-plots tell many conflicting stories, but good has to triumph in the end so that Miles can go on to the next book.
This sounds worse than I intend, but explaining the plot in only a few words is difficult. I think Ms Bujold's books are among the best sci fi written in recent years, and those about Miles are among the best of recent science fiction. As soon as I see one on the shelf at the local store, I pick it up, almost as a reflex action.
This particular version has been recorded by Grover Gardner, one of the 'Best Voices of the Century.' It is unabridged and lasts for about eleven hours on nine CD's.

Book Description
These are four of Rudolf Steiner's best-loved lectures. In-cluded are Practical Training in Thought, Overcoming Nervousness, Facing Karma, and The Four Temperaments. With its many practical exercises, mantras, and meditations, this book is a fundamental introduction for anyone entering the path of inner development.
Customer Reviews:
Anthroposophy in Everyday Life.......2005-07-23
This is one of the easier of Steiner's books to read that I've found so far. It gives good information on how to live your life more effectively, including a simple way to develop a reliable memory. I particular appreciated the passage where he explains why we suffer. In looking over this book in order to write this review, I realize that it is a book that would be well to read more than once, not because it's hard to understand, but because its wisdow is so worthwhile that it needs to become a part of me.
I have only been introduced to Rudolph Steiner' works in the past six months. I have read a number of his books and found that many of them are composed of identical lectures which repeat the same information from lecture to lecture with only a little new information or getting to the main point until the last one or two of the lectures. Fortunately, the above book is not one of those. It is a shame that no one ever took the time to distill the wisdom of this genius so that it would be less tedious to read his books. I supposed this is because it would be a monumental task because he was so prolific. And maybe it would take another genius to do it. Still, in my opinion, it is worthwhile to research his information. I decided to read some of his books because so many other esoteric writers whose books I have read and whom I respect greatly, refer to his works constantly as if he were the final authority on everything of any importance.
One of his easier books to understand!.......2003-06-23
I've read several of his books, this is one of my favorite ones. Very insightful, comprehensive and full of useful advice. I've reread this one several times. Simply one of the best!
Book Description
How, when, and where can one meet this Friend of every heart? My guess is that there are as many ways of meeting him as there are human beings in the world. I have heard of people who met him unexpectedly in near death experiences, during illnesses, or at crossroads in their lives. Some of these people saw and heard him, while for others the experience was less direct but no less meaningful. For example, they heard his voice or sensed his presence in the words or deeds of a friend or a stranger. I have also read of people meeting him because they earnestly desired it. Whether we are conscious or not of wanting to meet him, I believe his wish for the encounter is always present, but he never forces himself upon us. I have always felt complete respect from him for my freedom, both inner and outer" (from Friend of My Heart).
To open this book is to open yourself to the possibility of an extraordinary meeting. For this is the story of such a meeting, and it is one that can happen to anyone who wants it. The book begins as each of us must begin--with a declaration of hope, heartfelt longing, expectation. Gathered from more than twenty-five journals over twenty years, the messages in this book invite us to listen in the spirit of simplicity, openness, and faith, and then to be attentive to what stirs within.
First comes the question: how, when and where can one meet this Friend of the heart? The answer comes from the author's experiences and the messages she has received inwardly. Made deaf by illness at the age of six, Claire Blatchford speaks to us about how to listen and how to hear from our own inner and outer lives.
These are primary messages, put into the context of the author's life, that enable us, in the context of our own lives, to enter into a relationship with this Being who is the Friend of every heart. Friend of My Heart leaves us with the profound sense that we can all stand truly as our own selves in the presence of love.
