The years that journalist Christopher Dickey spent covering wars in the Middle East and Central America for Newsweek and the Washington Post give almost every page of his first novel an impressive verisimilitude. But even more impressive is his ability to take that stock figure of fiction on the page and screen--the Muslim terrorist--and turn him into an understandable and sympathetic human being. By making his central character a tall, blond, blue-eyed American boy, Dickey probably leaves himself open to charges of playing it safe, of ignoring ethnic realities. But it's the very fact that Kurt Kurtovic could be the boy next door that carries us along through this powerful, plausible story of Kurtovic's journey from Kansas schoolboy to Army Ranger hero to World Trade Center bomber, and helps to show us how America's actions in Panama and the Persian Gulf did indeed bring terrorism to its own shores. Dickey's nonfiction books in paperback are Expats: Travels in Arabia, from Tripoli to Teheran and With the Contras: A Reporter in the Wilds of Nicaragua.

Book Description

He is the perfect terrorist. He's an all-American boy. Kurt Kurtovic is someone you might know -- and ought to fear. Kurt was a U.S. Army Ranger. Born and raised in Kansas, he was trained to kill for -- what? Once he might have said "for God and country." Kurt searches in the former Yugoslavia, the land of his parents, for a place, for faith, for a cause. In the midst of the horrors in Bosnia, Kurt is recruited to fight by a holy warrior, a terrorist Iago, who plays on all of Kurt's doubts and fears: America is the evil behind the horror, but Kurt can change it. He can take the war home. He can penetrate to the heart of the U.S. elite. He can teach his country a lesson so horrible it will never forget. In this riveting story of war, love, and deception, Christopher Dickey takes us to the white-hot core of the terrorist mind. "Innocent Blood" is as real as today's headlines -- and tomorrow's.

5 out of 5 stars A Thought Provoking Story.......2002-03-16

I read this book this past week, after failing to track it down upon its release. It is a marvelous, gripping story that held me in the character's viewpoint the entire way. But it is not just a thriller; it requires you to think about the actions, and inactions, you make every day as an American. By not voicing your opinion to your government representatives, you allow them to speak for you without their knowledge of your beliefs and desires. Therefore, for instance, the war on terrorism (and personal privacy) currently ongoing is made in your name, whether or not you agree with it. And so this book tells the history of the main character named Kurt; how he views the world as a teenager, all the way up through his Army Ranger years, and how he (representing many frustrated Americans who feel their voice is unheard) becomes disillusioned with the government of his country and its policies. The tale ends in a manner designed to make you want to create positive change in a capitalistic world, where economies have become more important than the people who are supposed to benefit from them. The events of September 11 (and the fact that Kurt was not based on Timothy McVeigh) only serve to make this book more interesting; how can someone (granted, he is a journalist, thus--at least in this instance!--an inquiring mind) imagine these possibilities, and why couldn't our government's agencies recognize them as such. This book will make you think. I really liked it and recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars More People Should Know About This Book.......2001-12-07

I picked up the book recently and didn't realise what it was really about. I couldn't put it down - I've told as many people as I can about the book, but I really think that there should be more done to get the book out with the current state of the world.

It was eerie reading the book in November 2001. How could Dickey have hit such a perfect note a few years ago? I hope he is proud of his work. It would have been a compelling read at any time - but it is certainly a must now.

5 out of 5 stars Innocent Blood : A Novel by Christopher Dickey.......2001-10-20

Here is entry into a world which would have been unbelievable prior to the events of 9/11/01. Whether home-grown or international, the terrorism Christopher Dickey writes about comes first-hand from his experience in the midst of their frightening reality, and it comes through every word.

The style and imagery of Dickey is so compelling, it makes "Innocent Blood" a page-turner I could not put down until I finished it. Which brings me to say that the LAST 3 pages of this thriller could be considered the outline of a bible on the mind of the post-millenium terrorist.

I highly recommend this story which has an immediacy the writer could not have known about when he wrote it!

4 out of 5 stars Wow - a real thriller!.......1999-10-09

A very intense and satifying book that takes Kirt Kosavich (sp?) from the Army Rangers to Terrism and conspericies with the Arab people, and Americans alike.

A must read for Tom Clancy fans, or anyone else that has writen on current terrism and military affairs.

A good read!

        Book Description

What allows kids to use a lot of energy, make funny noises, relax, and learn to focus all at the same time? Yoga! While many yoga books present individual poses, this book explains how to create a flowing yoga practice that will holds kids' interest while providing the benefits of yoga. Here is a handbook for anyone--including parents, teachers, and kids--who wants to develop a fun yoga practice. In addition, the book provides ideas for yoga games, yoga at a wall, more relaxation games, and five-minute classroom yoga. Yael Calhoun, M.Ed., M.S., is an author and educator who has been studying yoga for 15 years. Yael lives in Utah with her husband and three sons, who have shared their yoga practices with her from the start. Matthew R. Calhoun is a certified children's yoga teacher and holds three certifications in hypnotherapy. He created yoga programs for children at the Chicago Yoga Institute and at Onward Neighborhood House. Matthew lives in New York City.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for kids with yoga.......2006-09-10

This well-thought out book shows so many pictures of kids of all ethnic backgrounds having fun doing yoga that any mom would be enthralled. The pictures are fluid; the children are happy; the poses look natural. It makes you want to get on the floor and try a pose, too.

5 out of 5 stars creative and new ideas.......2006-08-15

Most of the yogis who attend our yoga studio have children and are always looking for ways to interest their children in yoga. While we offer Family Yoga and Kids Yoga, the demand for "more for the children"
continues. This book offers parents and yoga teachers a way to easily introduce yoga into the lives of our children, and it does so in a presentation that is at once simple, fun, and delightful! I am confident this book will be on my shelves at the studio, so that when parents clamor for more kids yoga, I can recommend this book!

Best children's yoga book on the market today. Excellent descriptions, delightful illustrations. The big secret is, it has not only made Hatha Yoga fun, joyful, interesting for children, it is an excellent resource book for parents and yoga teachers. I used some partner yoga ideas immediately in my adult classes, touching the ageless child within us all. Great job Matthew and Yael. BRAVO!

"It feels like the authors have emptied their hearts to share the beauty of yoga with children, teachers, and parents. There is so much richness in the book. The relaxation techniques at the end of the book are amazing. One of my 11 year old students said the other day, I love Yoga because it begins with you are beautiful and perfect not that you are bad and wrong. My heart dances when people like Yael and Matthew take their time and energy to serve children and graciously and generously share so much."
Sheryl Edsall, Director of Naturally Yoga in New Jersey and creator of Barefoot Kids Yoga.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Intro to Yoga for Kids of All Ages.......2006-08-04

Create a Yoga Practice for Kids presents a fun and engaging way for parents and yoga teachers to introduce kids to the 3,000-year-old practice of yoga. Using imaginative theme practices (with such intriguing titles as "Poses that Melt" and "Poses You can do in Line and those you Cannot!"), poses named for funny and familiar members of the animal kingdom, and mind-melting relaxation exercises, this book encourages physical coordination, relaxation, introspection, laughter and creativity. With its explicit instructions and explanations of the benefits of each pose, it also provides an opportunity for kids and their parents discover yoga together

        5 out of 5 stars Outlaw Love.......2007-03-27

I was already reading another book, but picked up "Kid Calhoun", as I have been following all the Joan Johsnton western/romance novels, just to get an idea of what it would be about. I couldn't put it down, and read it straight through before I even got back to my other book. This full length novel was a fabulous adventure, straight out of the old west, with action, twists and turns, lilly lvered bad guys, and wonderful heroes and heroines throughout the entire story. Although, I found some of the elements in some of her other stories; a young woman passing as a boy, a white woman being captured by an Indian, the book takes off in it's own direction and I was quite enthralled with the multiple storylines going on.

Anabeth Calhoun, yearned to wear the beautiful dresses she saw in the store windows. But her lifestyle kept her from womanly things. As the youngest member of the Calhoun gang, of which her beloved Uncle was the leader, robbing stagecoaches were on the agenda. Only nobody knew she was a woman under the hat and buckskins she donned, not even the gang, except of course for her Uncle. She also had a reputation as a quick draw with a six-shooter and nobody challenged the young "Kid Calhoun". But the Kid was no killer, and when things go awry at the lastest hold-up, she finds herself, not just an outlaw, but an outlaw wanted for murder. When the handsome, rugged Ranger Jake Kearny, gets inovlved for personal reasons, he captures the Kid, who he learns is a beautiful woman, and tries to keep her in tow and vows to see her hang from a noose. But of of course there are many complications, and loner Jake, who has sworn off comittment to women, finds himself falling for his little wild brat of an outlaw. The bad guys also want Anabeth and the gold they think she has from the robbery. Jake's sister is also part of the plot, finds herself a captive and Jake has his hands full.

The book is one adventure after another, and of course romantic situtations for more then one couple have the reading antcipating the events that lie ahead. And when you finally get to that part, if you have read any others of Ms. Johnston's novels, you know it will sizzle. Both of the main women in the story, although very different have real grit.I loved the good guys, and the bad guys were real varmits! We learn quite a bit about life on an Apache village, and there are some great children characters as well. There's even a loner of a dog involved that the reader will probably become attached to as well. The rugged terrain is so descriptive and easy for the reader to imagine.Miss Johnston ties in and ties up all the lives well, and I was left very satisfied with the story.

A fabulous western/adventure/romance. One of Joan Johnston's best. If you have not read any of her others(many are part of a series, but this one is not),this one will have you coming back for more. If you enjoy this one, I would highly recommend her 'Sister of the Lone Star' trilogy, starting with "Fronteir Woman", followed by "Comanche Woman" and "Texas Woman"...Enjoy the read...Laurie

5 out of 5 stars GREAT STORY - GOOFY COVER [FROM 1993].......2007-02-24

Oh, yes! a strong female? sure gave into her hormones. Not strong enough to kill? well that kills something in a person, it was great that she didn't have that emotional trauma to go through.

Jake Kearney, a Texas Ranger, came to help his sister through the death of her husband, Sam Chandler.

Sam was killed in a stage hold-up by one of the Calhoun gang wanting his gold. Claire was devastated, because three years ago they has lost their son in an Indian raid. Only Sam knew that the boy was taken by the Apaches and not dead as he lead her to believe.

"Kid Calhoun" was really walking on eggs around her uncle Boone's gang. She watched from a safe distance as Boone's men turned on him and each put some bullets into him led by Wat Rankin.

She vowed vengence on the gang and thought she could kill them one by one.
At least she was female enough to be disgusted with killing. I loved the way that Jake happened to step in every time she was threatened by one of the gang members.

Jake needed to find Boone's hideout to find the gold stolen from his sister's husband to pay off the ranch's debt. Will Reardon was pushing for Claire to pay up or to marry him. He wants her ranch.

Now we come to the side players, there is Wolf, the Apache boy that grew up visiting with Anabeth through-out the years. He wants her as his woman.
Isn't it ironic that neither Jake nor Wolf want to marry? Wolf is bound and determined to have Stalking Deer for his own. That is until she keeps refusing and he accidently kidnaps Claire.
Wolf takes Claire to the Apache hold and there she stumbles onto her son, Jeffrey, White Eagle, who refuses to even talk to her.

Soon Claire is learning the way of the Apache woman - then becomes friends with He Makes Trouble, a little six year old and she does fall in love with Wolf.

This is a fascinating story - a great plot - well paced with great characters - Kid may have been fast but she couldn't shoot a man.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -m - another keeper!

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-12-08

I loved it. Lots of fun, sexy and exciting. It kept me turning pages like "Anything, My Love" by Cynthia Simmons. Couldn't put it down.

        1 out of 5 stars Weak Heroine!!.......2002-10-01

I was very disappointed by this book. The heroine, Kid Calhoun, sets out to avenge the death of her murdered uncle. But, because she is a woman and, therefore, infinitely weaker than any man, she is too overtaken by her emotions to follow through on her vow of vengence. I was very insulted by this book. Why create a heroine who dresses up as a young man and rides with a band of outlaws if you are just going to make her a weakling? I could understand if the author was against killing, but the heroes in this book have no qualms about killing the villians. I would rather have a strong heroine who is not defined by stereotypes.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and romantic!.......1997-01-26

This story is wonderful! Once you turn the first page you are confronted with new and exciting ideas! Kid Calhoun isn't what you think! I've read this book at least 5 times! Each time I fall in love with the personalities created and love that the couples struggle to uncover! You'll enjoy the drama and the ending when its finally solved

3 out of 5 stars Fills a gap, but incomplete.......2007-03-03

I'm an MZB / Darkover fan from way back. Was quite excited to find this book. It started well, had lots of potential to be a good novel but towards the end it just faded away. After the death of Ysaye and the severing of Leonie Hastur's links to Ysaye, allowing Ysaye to die and Leonie to live, it collapsed completely. It read as if the last half of the book had been deleted and a couple of pages substituted. All in all, it filled some gaps in Darkover history, but left a lot of unanswered questions. As other reviewers have noted, perhaps the weakest book in the series. Worth a read for all that but expect to be disappointed with what it doesn't cover.

4 out of 5 stars i "heart" darkover (and kurt cobain, but off the subject).......2005-05-07

okay, this book is about when the terrans rediscovered darkover. the two main characters are Elizabeth MacKintosh (later to become Elizabeth Lorne) and Leonie Hastur. It switches back and forth from their points of view. On the terran ship, there are colonists that are looking for a planet where they can settle, and they find darkover, although they do not know it's darkover yet, and they keep of seeing strange things going on. But on darkover there is Leonie who is being sent to the tower of Daleruth, who is feeling annoyed because she feels that her twin brother Lorill is getting in her way of becoming a keeper because she has a ton of power and the hastur gift because Lorill got to go to Arilinn while Leonie had to go to Daleruth. so when the terrans land, they land in the hellers and are met by the aldarans and start to build a spaceport. and then leonie sents lorill up to the hellers and finds himself in a difficult situation.

this is a good book to start reading darkover with, but is awful for people who notice inconsistantcies (lorill and leonie see that some of the terrans have laran). but i thought it was really good even though it doesn't support lorill and leonie's argument in the shattered chain.

4 out of 5 stars an important moment in Darkover's history.......2003-12-19

This Darkover novel is similar to "Darkover Landfall" in that it deals with the discovery (in this case, rediscovery) of the planet Darkover by Terrans landing on the planet. There are rather significant differences, of course. "Rediscovery" takes place a couple of thousand years after "Darkover Landfall" and the ship that colonized Darkover is known only as one of the "Lost Ships" that was unaccounted for. The Terran spacecraft has been traveling for several years, looking for a habitable planet on which to land and conduct experiments to determine whether or not the planet is able to be colonized. The novel's viewpoint switches back and forth between the ship and the telepath's who learn the ship is coming.

Part of the novel (that which is suggested by the title) is focused on the ship, its crew, and the discovery that the people of Darkover are comprised of the descendants of former Terran colonists. The other viewpoint is that of the native Darkovans. We see Leonie Hastur, a woman going to train her extremely powerful laran in one of the Towers. Even though I know the novel's focus was truly on the rediscovery of Darkover, it was the Leonie chapters that interested me the most.

The events of this novel were a turning point in the history of Darkover as there will now be a Terran presence on Darkover and a greater technological impact on what was once a low-tech world. This was not one of the best Darkover novels, but I enjoyed it and it was a story that needed to be told as it allows for all of the novels that are set after "Rediscovery". I would not start the series with "Rediscovery", but if you like the series then there is no reason you shouldn't read this one, too.

5 out of 5 stars great book for darkover fans of all ages.......2001-11-01

it starts out with a ship from earth sending a team down to darkover for exploration. this shuttle crashes and ends up standed in the middle of a blizzard. an interesting subplot also
tells the story of a young leonie hastur and her first trip to
a tower for training of her laran. this i find slightlty more
interesting becasue most darkover novels potray her in later life
as a very unapproacable keeper and this book shows a more softer
human side. anyway one of the people on the shuttle is also telepathic and her and leonie develop a friendship that is forbidden. the outcome of all of this is just superb and well worth reading.

                5 out of 5 stars Essential!.......2001-07-15

Bad? Not at all. I thought it was fascinating. It is particularly interesting to read about how the people of Darkover came to become such powerful telepaths, why the Comyn mostly have red hair and other really interesting insights.

My only complaint is was too short and I wanted more. Of the dozen or so Darkover books I've read, I really did enjoy this one too.

1 out of 5 stars The Prophet of Profit Strikes Again.......2005-08-15

In this book, John Avanzini attempts to give biblical reasons why people who give money to God in return for financial blessing do not receive it. The reasons the author gives seems to indicate there is something wrong with the giver. In my opinion this book tries to pacify people burned by the give-to-get myth perpetuated by Word-Faith preachers like Avanzini who part people from their money. Nice attempt at damage control caused by even his own teaching. Avoid his books and this cultic teaching.

Want to open the windows of heaven? Then write a book telling others how to open the windows of heaven. Obedience is the reason we tithe and give offerings. It is NOT a cosmic get-rich scheme. Ever wonder why televangelists like Avanzini have a 1-800 number for you to call for donations, but if you need prayer you have to call long-distance and pay for it yourself. Want to be richer? Save your money and don't buy this book.

1 out of 5 stars The emperor has no clothes.......1999-10-02

Wondering why prayer works on TV? Want to know why people call up TBN, estatic about getting a 100,000 dollars after giving 100 dollars to the guys at TBN? Want to know why none of this works in real life - like on TV? Could it be that Avanzini is a crook? No! It's YOUR fault. Or, at least that's what the book wants you to believe. This is some of the worst of "prosperity gospel" heresy. I'm now waiting for a band of Christians, armed with "WWJD" bracelets, to come and start tipping over tables at their local churches that peddle this silliness. And some Christians wonder why people hate them....

5 out of 5 stars There is a blessing in every chapter........1999-07-20

This book will show you how to keep the windows of heaven open for you. As you read and understand those ways that we block our blessing, Avanzini will show you how to re-open any closed windows and your blessings will come.
