Book Description
Marina Warner explores the tradition of personifying liberty, justice, wisdom, charity, and other ideals and desiderata in the female form, and examines the tension between women's historic and symbolic roles. Drawing on the evidence of public art, especially sculpture, and painting, poetry, and classical mythology, she ranges over the allegorical presence of the woman in the Western tradition with a sharply observant eye and a piquant and engaging style.

Next? I'll second that.......2007-09-20
I bought "NO LYE!" Tuesday and returned it Wednesday. It was not nearly what I expected after all of the rave reviews. The illustrations were limited and the sections on twists was no help at all. I bought "Textured Tresses" today and love it. There is a lot of celebrity name dropping but who cares. It is well written and provides product names, numerous illustrations, detailed how-to's and a salon directory. Also there is a section on picking the right stylist and salon that I found helpful. Don't waste your money on "NO LYE!". No lie.
The Real Deal.......2007-08-29
Excellent book which provided much needed encouragement to go natural. I've been "relaxer free" since April 2006 and now in the process of transitioning from extensions. Thanks Tulani !!
A Comback for the Dyed & Fried.......2007-01-27
This book is outstanding. It is hair therapy for damaged scalps, strands, tresses, locks and otherwise damaged hair with good intentions. Knowledge is power--it discusses the history and culture of our hair, composition, its' entry into the African American mainstream, styles (cornrows, individual braids, extensions, natural hair) treatments, and care for our crown & glory. Thank you, this is a precious gift.
I expected more..........2006-11-10
This book gave good information, but it did not meet my expectations. I expected a lot more information and techniques for me to style my natural hair myself. When I had chemically relaxed hair, I went to 'the shops' only for application of the chemical. I was very accomplished at washing, conditioning, wet-setting or/or wrapping my shoulder hair. I was hoping that this book would give me these types of skills or techniques. The book seems to emphasis (with many pictures)hair styles that one would have to visit a hair shop to obtain. When I checked-out the prices, I was shocked to find that the operaters in my area wanted a minimum of $65 to wash and braid my hair. I learned (from the book) that some operaters actually braid YAK hair into natural curls to give an illusion of length.
I have such sense of freedom, love, and 'me' since I have acknowledged that I was born with 'wash and wear hair.' My man just loves to see my just-washed soft, springy spirals of curls - he says it's the sexiest thing ever.
Less Than Expected.......2006-11-02
Some very basic information provided regarding natural hair. Not what I expected from the book.

It's impossible to write about Daniel Clowes's work without using the word "ennui." But his is a joyous ennui, if such a thing is possible, one that relishes the boredom of everyday life with a Zen enthusiasm. The title David Boring reflects his self-aware humor and captures the essence of an ordinary man living through a larger-than-life story. The main character lives with his best friend, Dot, in a large city, each looking for love and meaning. David in particular is trying to understand his father, whom he knows only through an obscure comic book called "The Yellow Streak." Murder, obsession, sex, and war are all just distractions as he tries to construct a sensible portrait from the odd bits and pieces he finds in his travels. Clowes finds little miracles everywhere he looks--so many, in fact, that they seem hardly to interest him. This detachment perversely makes David Boring deeply compelling and worthy of serious attention from fans and newcomers alike. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Meet David Boring: a nineteen-year-old security guard with a tortured innner life and an obsessive nature. When he meets the girl of his dreams, things begin to go awry: what seems too good to be true apparently is. And what seems truest in Boring's life is that, given the right set of circumstances (in this case, an orgiastic cascade of vengeance, humiliation and murder) the primal nature of humandkind will come inexorably to the fore.
"Boring finds love with a mysterious woman named Wanda, loses her and sort of finds her again. He also gets shot in the head (twice) and stranded on an island with his brutish family. Meanwhile, the world may or may not be ending soon. And did I mention that much of this is hilariously funny?" -- Time

His worst.......2007-08-14
Just because it's in the title doesn't mean i CAN'T say that this was just boring. It really seemed for the first time that Clowes was TRYING to be hip. The characters were nothing to be liked, there was nothing about the main character that made me care what happened next. The ending wasn't really an ending, so much as the story just stopping.
Read Pussey!, Ghost World, Velvet Glove Cast in Iron (masterpiece), Caricature, or even Lloyd Llewellyn (for quick laughs). This one... buy it if you think the late 90's were cool.
Good stuff........2007-05-27
Daniel Clowes, David Boring (Pantheon, 2000)
Meet David. David is a nineteen-year-old security guard who meets, and becomes obsessed with, his dream girl. When she vanishes, David finds himself lost in an almost surreal tangle of violence, mystery, and revenge that is backgrounded with odd rumors of terrorist attacks, which makes this book all too eerie in retrospect. Clowes is, of course, best known as the author of Ghost World, which was made into a surprisingly successful 2001 film, but David Boring is, I think, a superior work in every way; the characters are simply fantastic, the plot is just absurd enough to be believable, and the art, while somewhat primitive (Clowes is consciously drawing in the style of fifties superhero comics here), is evocative. If you're into graphic novels already, you probably don't need me to tell you you should be reading Daniel Clowes; if you're not, or you're new to the genre, then maybe you do. And I just did. *** ½
Clowes, Clowes, Clowes..........2007-01-10
Well...okay. I love Dan Clowes's work. Love it. Eightball (the early issues especially) was a HUGE favorite for me as a teen. I still read those issues. However, most fans of Clowes will know that as time wore on, he shifted away from drama-laced-humor into humor-laced-drama.
David Boring is the first story from Eightball to really confirm that Clowes really didn't care if he was funny anymore. Which is great for Clowes, but for me it's a bit dissappointing. NOT because it's dramatic, but because from my POV Clowes is a much better comic writer than of drama. When he does drama, the stories (like this one) are a little disjointed; they keep building to potential payoffs, then nothing happens. And the characters are a little hard to read.
BUT, that all being said, it is still eerie, foreboding, and entertaining, in that special Clowes way. Entertaining, intriguing, at times exciting. But, not very funny, and a couple times I had to back up a few pages as I felt I'd missed something. And I'm SMART!
So, if you know what you're in for, then definitely pick this up as it's a high-quality volume on good paper (and if it's too pricy the resellers have it CHEAP!). If you haven't read it, my suggestion is to look it over in a Border's or something, THEN buy it here if you like what you see. Good stuff, just a bit bare and bleak compared to Clowes's earlier stuff.
Caveat Emptor.
Engrossing.......2005-10-25
Somewhat dream-like, but not as bizarrely abstract as "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron." This is the book that made me a fan of Clowes.
Wonderfully precise graphic style that trumps the look of both "Velvet Glove" and "Ghost World."
Boring: An ass-essment.......2005-09-14
"David Boring" contains a surprisingly large number of panels of naked girls with large bottoms, and so is a tad embarrasing to read while commuting to work on the train. There's also a lot of violence, including the hero with a bullet hole in the middle of his head (but he recovers (twice)).
The writing is clever, and moves in directions that I didn't expect after reading "Ghost World". Act two reminded me of Agatha Christie's "Twelve Little Indians".

Even if you don't like history..........2007-09-11
This book had been so hard to put down, my sight literally get fuzzy from the non stop reading . I love all the facts this book has in it.
I have all the books by David Wallechinksy. My husband and I used to take turns reading excerpts to each other.
I was so excited when I saw another book of facts, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. Looking forward to more books like this one.
A Fun Source Of Information.......2007-05-22
As a kid growing up in the late 70's I enjoyed reading the "People's Almanac" series. These books not only helped to build my love of reading but they also solidified my young identity as a "seeker of knowledge." So it was obviously a pleasure to come across this more recent edition with it's focus on the 20th century.
The subjects covered include crime, religion, war, natural disasters animals and movies. Of course, not every topic will be of interest to every reader. But, at over 900 pages, there is certainly more than enough here that any reader with a reasonable degree of intellectual curiosity will get their money's worth.
Everything I've waited for!.......2003-06-07
I am a "People's Almanac" "Book of Lists" junkie. I own them all. I swear if I took one item with me to a desert island, this would be it. Some people that have read these books cover to cover like I have, may notice some items are the same as in previous books. Who CARES?! This is the stuff of life. I just wish the book wasn't so dang heavy!
Clear an concise.......2003-04-23
The content of this book is amazing, but most impresssive is the manner in which is laid out. In the various sections you get subheadings with the background, the information and the follow up where deemed appropriate. It is ideal for anybody who has an interest in general knowledge or just enjoys finding out more about specific topics. As with most books of it's type you can put it down and return back to it and immediately be engrossed in the content. Great information on wierd and strange happenings also. Highly recommended
Lots of fun--truly history with the boring parts left out.......2003-03-05
Have you ever met somebody at a party who just seems to know all sorts of interesting stories and anecdotes? He's probably read this book. The publishers advertise this as "History with the dull parts left out," and that's exactly what it is. A compendium from three prior "People's Almanacs" published in the mid-70s, this book takes all the material that deals with the 20th century, in many cases updating it since the 1970s. Topics are both mainstream and offbeat: everything from infamous assassinations to famous people in literature, U.S. presidents to notorious kidnappings. The book is filled with off-beat quotes and surprising facts and figures--it's akin to a Ripley's Believe It Or Not combined with a world almanac, only better than both. And for the price, it's a steal. If you want a fun page turner that will also make you a little better-informed every time you read it, a light "popular" history of the 20th century that's most substantive than most other books of its type, this is for you. You might also want to look in used bookstores or online for the original Peoples Almanacs--dated, but still fascinating.

No boring parts, HONEST!.......1998-08-24
20 bucks for a book?! Well, this one's worth it and much more! The hundreds of articles and illustrations will satisfy every interest under the sun. I swear, once you start reading this book you won't be able to put it down! I've learned so much about 20th century history from this one book than in my five months of Modern History at college. Entertaining AND informative!
Great bathroom reading!.......1996-12-27
At last a history book that you can browse through.
As expected, you can learn about wars, presidents, and genocide. But you can also find the unexpected, with fascinating tidbits everywhere. For example: read about great practical jokers (page781), great thefts (page 190), entertainment scandals (page 434), the invention of silly putty (p 581), hoaxes (769). Well written, fun, and interesting -- what more could you want

A good dictionary - a great twist.......2007-08-10
This is actually one of the better middle to high school dictionaries out there. Readable font size, extensive word list, moderate definitions (not too little or too much detail).
Why this dictionary over others, though? Admittedly it's Garfield. Students have spent a lot more time "inside" this dictionary than others for obvious reasons. In this case it's ok. I'd recommend this dictionary to any parent/family member considering a dictionary for a middle or high school aged student.
Consider buying a used one too - for some reason there are always a lot of them for cheap!
Good for Kids but Incomplete for Adults.......2005-10-26
I get really bored using those thick and heavy dictionaries that have such small fonts i'd get dizzy looking up words. this is where garfield helped me, the font size used in this dictionary is just right and the comics made looking up words something fun to do. although some words were kinda inappropriate for some of the comic strips, it nonetheless got the essence of the word. this dictionary has enough words for let's say kids and teenagers but as you read adult books, you'll find words that aren't in this dictionary anymore. i'll have to go back to my good old merriam-webster collegiate dictionary 11th ed. but then again this dictionary was made for kids aged 9-12 so it's all good, it serves its purpose. a good buy for kids who'd like to learn and for adults who want to be entertained.
Not your average dictionary!.......2005-09-29
I needed a dictionary for my son (3rd grader), and he told me he used a Garfield dictionary. He said this was the one he used when I showed him the picture. I was so surprised when I received it, to see that its just like a normal dictionary, except there are comics in it, using examples of words in the dictionary.
It can be used for children or adults alike.
Nice dictionary, but meatier than you think.......2001-11-28
This is a serious dictionary, not a kids dictionary as you would be led to believe. Most pages have a Garfield cartoon with a highlighted word defined on that page. Sometimes I question the choice of words, because there would be a better word in the strip, but that's a minor complaint. I will warn you that this is a real adult sized dictionary with all the words you would expect in that type of book. So if you are buying it for your elementary school Garfield fan, you should be forewarned. Of course if they don't outgrow the Garfield fascination they can use it a long time!
Children of all ages.......2000-01-02
This book has humor for all ages of people. It adds a humorous aspect to looking up words. I guarentee that if you like Garfield that you will love this book! There is a garfield comic on every page which uses one of the words on the page. It is used in a humorous context. You will never look at a dictionary the same again.
