Book Description

Fleeing an abusive home, Katerina, a teenage peasant in Ukraine in the 1880s, is taken in by a Jewish family and becomes their housekeeper. Feeling the warmth of family life for the first time and incorporating the family’s customs and rituals into her own Christian observances, Katerina is traumatized when the parents are murdered in separate pogroms and the children are taken away by relatives. She finds work with other Jewish families, all of whom are subjected to relentless persecution by their neighbors. When the beloved child she had with her Jewish lover is murdered, Katerina kills the murderer and is sent to prison. Released from prison years later, in the chaos following the end of World War II, a now elderly Katerina is devastated to find a world that has been emptied of its Jews and that is not at all sorry to see them gone. Ever the outsider, Katerina realizes that she has survived only to bear witness to the fact that these people had ever existed at all.

5 out of 5 stars terrific insightful historical.......2006-02-12

Sixty-three years ago then teenager Katerina left her Ukraine village because her father's mountain of a second wife makes her uncomfortable with her demands and she fears the changes in her father since her mom died. She travels to Poland where she obtains work as a housekeeper to different Jewish families. Katerina finds her hosts treat her with respect and kindness unlike her own blood; she is horrified with how the non-Jewish Poles mistreat her employers even getting away with murder.

When her son, raised Jewish, is killed, she knifes his murderer. Of course killing a Jew is not necessarily a crime, but killing the killer is so Katerina spends the next four decades incarcerated. She is shocked during World War II when her fellow prisoners gleefully applaud the transporting of the Jews to concentration camps. When the war ends, Katerina is freed and returns to her Ukraine family farm knowing no Jews live in Europe except those from her memories occupying a major place in her heart and soul as she writes her life's lament while closing in on her eightieth birthday.

KATERINA is a terrific insightful look at a woman who believes one must never forget those you love martyred in your soul by a world filled with morally always right killers. The sad Katerina knows first hand that intolerance and prejudice in any form murders even the innocent. Aharon Appelfeld provides a strong poignant reflection on life and death.

4 out of 5 stars New Look At Terror.......2001-02-15

"Katerina" by Aaron Appelfeld is an original look at The Holocaust. This is a piece of history, an event that has been written about countless times, but this writer's perspective is unique. The book is a historical novel; however the circumstances he describes could have, and probably did happen in very similar form.

The protagonist Katerina is not a Jew, she is not raised to respect Jews, and her surroundings are that of anti Semitism. However events lead to her working for a Jewish Family, and as the years pass she learns to understand their culture and their religious beliefs. As her knowledge grows so does her respect for them and with it a steady degrading of the hatred for anti-Semitism she can no longer justify.

A horrifying act of cruelty to which she reasonably responds leads to her imprisonment. And it is in this prison setting the Author creates for her decades of fear and loathing of those she came from and their hatred of Jews for which she feels such contempt. Her one consistent visitor is her Lawyer, again a Jew. She is kept in this prison where the trains that carry the Holocaust's victims pass by each day. She lives with people who happily celebrate the genocide while clothing themselves in the victim's clothes and other personal effects that were confiscated.

After half of her life is passed in prison the War ends and the prisoners walk free. Even her freedom is tainted, as she is forced to endure the celebratory attitude of her fellow prisoners that all the Jews are gone, the killers of Christ have themselves been killed. So even when she returns to her village that she left behind 63 years in her past she does so knowing the people she adopted as equals have been decimated, and people that never knew her then, now know her as the murderess, the legend she has become.

The Author portrays a scene of this very old woman coming upon what was a Temple, and the effect of the writing is as galvanizing as any thing you may read. This is a book that is unlike others books about the Genocide of WWII, all the horror is there, but it is left more to your mind's eye than placed before you in all its historical butchery. The emotional trauma this woman endures during the War combined with the balance of her suffering in life, is of a magnitude that is awesome both in its scope and depth of despair.

4 out of 5 stars Insight into anti-Semitism as well as life as a peasant.......1998-12-28

Katerina is a Ruthenian peasant woman (a Gentile), forced to work for a Jew. Over time, she becomes fascinated with the Jews. The story takes place in the Ukraine, before the Holocaust. Interesting insight into anti-Semitism as well as life as a peasant.

      Book Description

Examining four of Lee Smith's mountain novels from the point of view of cultural anthropology, this study show that fragments of the Cherokee heritage resonate in her work. These elements include connections with the Cherokee beliefs regarding medicinal plants and spirit animals, Cherokee stories about the Daughter of the Sun, the corn Woman, the Spear Finger, the Raven Mocker, the Little People and the booger men; the Cherokee concept of witchcraft; and the social position of Cherokee women.

5 out of 5 stars An astonishing book........2003-11-26

Naked Wanderlust is not just a highly erotic and adventurous book. It touches many issues that revolve around the complexity of the human psyche and the way it is done is through a very witty, funny and sensual landscape. Reading the book has made me numb from desire and burn from the intensity of the heroes feelings and I recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a trip inside the human mind. Keep it, share it, or read it to your partner and there is a guarantee that the flame of passion and adventure will explode. On the other hand, you can keep it as a shocking, private and provocative little secret that will keep you tucked in warmth for hours on end.

Film Producers, hurry and buy the film rights of this book, for many of us long to see those amazing adventures around the world adapted visually on the small or big screen. The poetry is exceptional, the photographs are unique and the writing, as sharp, raw and profound as it can get.

Don't miss it!! A truly unique experience! It has become our bible and my wife loves it.

Ranching is not just for men but also for women. That is how Kate Stafford sees it when her dream comes true and she becomes a rancher in the Wild West. After setting to go out west, Kate never imagined that a new world with land for miles around would come to her. To her, this is seemed impossible until now. Left to her by a lady named Widow Keller, Kate can't figure out why the woman would leave this ranch to her father. Unfortunately, her father passed away which left the ranch to Kate as her responsibilty to make it shine among the ashes once again. Only one thing is interfering, Priscilla, her sister. Priscilla can't see what all the fuss is, about a house, cattle and acres of land that seem so hard to work. However, among the land and cattle, a new life will start for Kate, and a cowboy comes into her life.

Justin Chadwick is on a mission of revenge. Set out to find the killer who murdered his brother two years ago, the trail brings him to Silver Falls - a place where the families are happy and hardly any trouble, but also where Kate Stafford now resides. Clues start to come to him that the killer is looking for a foreman, so he signs up for the job, not knowing that all his attention will sway to Kate instead of finding the murderer. As a foreman for Johnny Miller, suspected of killing his brother, he tries all he can to stick to Miller like a bug. However, there is a slight problem... although his original goal had been to stay close to Johnny, Kate keeps invading his thoughts and dreams.

Dreaming of a life filled with children and a warm woman to sleep with at night, Justin never thought that dream could be possible. Being with Kate is the only way that it could possibly come true, if he knows when to confide in her and trust her with his secrets. Can they make a life with each other? Can Justin find the killer before he loses Kate by his own doing?

How to Lasso a Cowboy not only is it a great story but one that shows how revenge can often be forgotten to let love in sometimes. Justin only had one goal in his life: to find his brother's killer. Well, that was what he thought until he met Kate Stafford and fell in love at first sight. Hard to believe, but looking into her eyes brought back all the old memories and dreams he used to have before his mind was set on his life's goal. Now, that Kate Stafford has settled in ranch life she is set to have that life no matter what her sister Priscilla tells her. She can't believe that her sister doesn't like the ranch or the joy of having endless lands for mile away. To her this is like freedom, to show that she can do anything she sets her mind. With Justin's help, they both learn that ranching and finding he killer is not important, unlike the attraction they can no longer deny.

Ms. Larer shines in this western romance from the first chapter through the end. The scenery of Silver Falls and the description of the land that Kate sees are breathtaking when you read how they interact. Even Priscilla is hilarious in this romance as she fights to not do menial ranching work. This is definitely recommended to read, for its great story line and to see whether they admit their attractions to each other and live a happy life.

4 out of 5 stars A great sequel: more about a fascinating world and interesting characters.......2006-12-31

I recommend this book for readers over 18. I agree with most of the content of the positive reviews here. Reviewers who criticize the writing style in this book are expecting something else; I think the style suits the story perfectly. Cherryh's depiction of a society of insecure, defensive people who try to cover up their fears by squeezing everyone into only a small number of rigid social roles is thoroughly realistic. I personally am glad she left Jesus' name out of the mostly nasty "church" controlled by this mindset.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to get into, but then you can't put it down.......2006-01-09

This is the first book I have read by Cherryh. I found the first couple of chapters diffifcult, mainly because I was trying to get the concept of the horses telepathy, but once I figured out how that worked the book became easy to read and highly enjoyable -I finished it within the day because I desperately wanted to know how things turned out.

In a strange land humans have previously been dropped by spaceships by some sort of higher power, the land is rough with lots of telepathic animals and many dangers. The humans live in high walled villages, spread far apart. Some of the humans have a special gift and are chosen by a horse to be their rider. They escort people back and forth between villages, the non-psychic would never dare venture out without a horse and it's rider to protect them.

Danny is one such rider and his first mission ever is to get two brothers and their 13 year old sister from Tarmin to Evergreen. Tarmin was completely destroyed by a rogue beast and the brothers and sister are the only survivors. Why they are the only survivors provides some fascinating twists in the tale.

I really enjoyed this book, it was interesting, unusual and well written. The only complaint from me is the very fast ending, but I am now hunting for the next book which completes a trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sequel. Please write another.......2005-02-11

An amazingly intriguing original story. No one but Ms. Cherry could have dreamed up such an original world. Once again an exploration into lonliness, and into unconditional loyalty. Only bad thing about this series is the abrupt end.

4 out of 5 stars Action with a telepathic dimension.......2004-06-04

Cherryh's "Cloud's Rider" continues the saga (after "Rider at the Gate") of Danny Fisher and the telepathic nighthorse, Cloud, with a desperate mountain climb through a horrific blizzard that would be plenty suspenseful all on its own. Add a crazed telepathic pursuer and a comatose girl whose thoughts can kill and you've got edge-of-your-seat, sci-fi adventure
            .
The climbing party consists of two boys and their comatose sister, the sole survivors of a village wiped out in a vermin swarm, triggered by a rogue horse. They are being led by neophyte rider Danny and his horse, whose ability to visualize the terrain in all their heads keeps them alive.

Riders and horses have a strong bond, a symbiotic relationship for which the horse will lay down its life. They guard trading convoys and villages from the local telepathic predators and are regarded with suspicion by non-riders who live in close-knit religious communities and distrust the riders' freedom.

Guiltily, Danny has a secret, which he does not share with the riders of the village where his party finds its winter refuge, thereby endangering them all. The reader's information also trickles in, sustaining the mystery just long enough to get back to the action.

Well-paced and well-plotted, "Cloud's Rider" offers plenty of adventure in a well-developed world.

                              Book Description

A paperback edition of Campbell's major study of the mythology of the world's high civilizations over five millennia. It includes nearly 450 illustrations. The text is the same as that of the 1974 edition.

Mythologist Joseph Campbell was a masterful storyteller, able to weave tales from every corner of the world into compelling, even spellbinding, narratives. His interest in comparative mythology began in childhood, when the young Joe Campbell was taken to see Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show at Madison Square Garden. He started writing articles on Native American mythology in high school, and the parallels between age-old myths and the mythic themes in literature and dreams became a lifelong preoccupation. Campbell's best-known work is The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), which became a New York Times paperback best-seller for Princeton in 1988 after Campbell's star turn on the Bill Moyers television program The Power of Myth.

During his early years as a professor of comparative religion at Sarah Lawrence College, Campbell made the acquaintance of Indologist Heinrich Zimmer, a kindred spirit who introduced him to Paul and Mary Mellon, the founders of Bollingen Series. They chose Campbell's The Mythic Image as the culmination of the series, giving it the closing position--number one hundred. A lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced study of the mythology of the world's high civilizations, The Mythic Image received a front-cover review in the New York Times Book Review upon publication. Through the medium of visual art, the book explores the relation of dreams to myth and demonstrates the important differences between oriental and occidental interpretations of dreams and life.

Let's say you don't want to sit down and read Hero w/ a Thousand Faces, or any other Joseph Campbell works that are very long and more text-based. Perhaps, though, you know a little about the man, and want to learn a little more about what he thinks of things. This is the book that you're looking for, then. It's an incredibly lovingly written study of mythological / religious symbology through most places & times in the history of our little blue rock. With about 500 illustrations, I believe, it makes just as proper a coffee table book as it does a reference source. What's wonderful is that it doesn't take a look at cultures one by one, and examine their belief systems, each in turn--it examines the symbols themselves, instead, and then focuses on the commonalities in the world's living and lost theological systems that have grown out of these archetypal symbols. And like I said, maybe you don't want to read 5 or 6 volumes of scholarly literature just to get at the parts that speak to you. So you start with this book, you see what's what, and THEN you dive in a little deeper from there. Quite possibly the non-fiction book I will keep with me for the rest of my life. Get it for yourself.

One of the last projects he worked on, this beautifully illustrated book puts together Campbell's views on myth as manafested through art. This could be his very best achievement as a "comparative mythologist." Organized around the theam of the world-as-dream (from Hinduism to *Finnagan's Wake*), it discusses several universal motifs in art/myth (the virgin birth, the world axis, the death and resurection of the hero...) and gives Campbell's explainatons for for their commonality. Manny of the artworks discussed in his audio tape lectures are shown and analyzed here. I am an art educator, and I've found that I can build almost my whole (multicultural) curiculum around this book.

                              Book Description

A stunning collection by William Abranowicz, The Greek File captures the essence of Greece-an alluring country where life itself is stripped down to its most essential components and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. From a single white cloud floating in a clear sky to a wrinkled linen shirt drying in the sun to shores dotted with throngs of buildings like pebbles washed in from the sea, Abranowicz's work elevates simple everyday objects to objects of austere beauty. These photographs capture the many facets of the Greek islands: their serenity, exceptional light, and arresting art and architecture.

Just as Abranowicz reveals the beauty of Greece through imagery, so too does world-renowned author and scholar Edmund Keeley unveil the subtle poetry of this Hellenic paradise. With an introduction by Keeley as well as an excerpt from The Colussus of Maroussi by Henry Miller, this elegantly designed volume is both a visual and literary treasure that is as rich and enchanting as the country it portrays.

You will swear that some of these images are pencil drawings and others a part of a dream. William Abranowicz is a gifted photographer whose passion for pristine landscapes and still life reinvents this artform. As a collector of his work, I was thrilled to see his first book published. The world has enjoyed his images without knowing they were enjoying the world through his eyes. Through his lens, we see a world that invites all the senses to be aroused. I will cherish this book as a personal treasure from my friend.

This book focuses on the mythical elements of royal genealogy. Vergil's effort in "The Aeneid" to deify Augustus Caesar by establishing his descent from Aeneas and through him and the Trojans to the Greek gods was duplicated by all the dynasties of the Frankish kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire. From the Merovingians (Clovis was descended from Aeneas's brother) to the Carolingians to the German dynasties down to the Hapsburgs, descent from the Trojans, the kings of Judea, and the Caesars was central to their claim to world rule. The ultimate effect would be a universal empire, universal peace, and the end of the world under the Last World Emperor. Philip II of Spain, who ruled the New World, came close and took his role very seriously, as the construction of the Escorial Palace in Madrid testifies. Philip was the sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece, which is based on an earlier Trojan legend of the Argonauts. Note that the flagship of the battle of Lep! anto, Philip's greatest victory, was named the Argo ! The book has too many typos for a Yale UP book but the production is elegant. I would have liked the mythical genealogies spelled out rather than summarized, but that might seem to be taking the myths too seriously.

"Imagery, especially the imagery of dreams, is the basis of mythology." The Author's words are at once the inspiration and explanation for this book - a searching of the mythology of the world's high civilizations over five millennia through nearly four hundred and fifty illustrations of mythic art from Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, European, and Olmec culture. Starting with the relation of dreams to myth, Joseph Campbell distinguishes two orders of myth: that of the relatively simple, nonliterate folk traditions, and that of the infinitely more complex literate civilizations that culminated in the triad of the great world religions, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam.

                                    Book Description

The mythic, shamanistic nature of the Kalevala has been emphasized ever since the epic was first published. The epic poetry and incantations on which it is founded afford a vista of a captivating world of archaic thought patterns and mythic images. This work by Anna-Leena analyzes the shamanistic images and metaphors encountered in the oral poetry of the Baltic Finns and at the same time examines the action of the ecstatic tietajas and the seers who fell into a trance. It thus reveals the images and metaphors and their variations associated with the shaman's skills, the topography and inhabitants of the other world and the shaman's journey there.

Siikala traces mythic images in the light of Old Norse poetry and sagas, the myths of Antiquity and the Middle East, medieval visions, Siberian and Sami shamanism, archaeology and linguistic developments. This book delves to the very roots of Northern European thought. The numerous incantations quoted, so far unknown to the English-speaking world, illustrate the visual nature of the poetry on which the Kalevala is based and the close relationship between incantations and epic as manifestations of mythic thinking.
