Book Description
In this bestselling series Bodie and Brock Thoene have thrilled readers with an epic tale chronicling the struggle for the world's holiest and most turbulent city. As Jerusalem's Hope opens, strategist Moshe Sachar remains hidden in a secret tunnel beneath the Temple Mount, safely removed from the chaos of Israel's 1948 war of independence, while the funeral of an elder rabbi proceeds above him. Using the instructions the rabbi gave him before his death, Moshe opens another sacred scroll and is once again transported to the dramatic biblical story of a charismatic but mysterious prophet. As word of the miracles performed by this seer spreads, bloody violence erupts, threatening the future of the Roman state and revealing the prophet's surprising identity.

A Must-read!.......2007-01-21
This book and all the other books that are in the series is fantastic. The Thoene's writing is realistic, factual when necessary and I am trying to catch up on all their books. I would recommend this entire series for anyone who does not know much about what happened to Israel before and after they became a nation. Make sure you start with the first book in the series.
The Thoene's continue to surprise!!.......2004-04-02
I am simply amazed at the incredible knowledge I have learned from this book. It is simply a wonderful read. From the telling of this story, I have learned about the Jewish faith and it's Passover and also about the belief they have in the coming of their "Messiah" which is prophesized throughout the Torah. After being a Sunday School teacher for 17 years, this says alot for the Thoene's. However, I did not just read this for it's biblical sense alone, I read it for it's characters too. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the development of Marcus and Miryam and what had become of the "Sparrows." If you have read the other books in the series, then you too will find this book a pleasant addition to the collection!
Another Wonderful, Rich Read.......2004-01-30
I loved this book. It was very touching in many places and made so clear the importance of the lamb as sacrifice for sin for the Jewish people. The story of the children, the lambs and Zadok was wonderful. The ending of the book brought me to tears. I can't wait to read First Light!
Predictable.......2003-07-02
I enjoyed (JERSALEM'S HOPE)but I would like to continue on with the original story. The story was so predictable that I knew what was going to happen before it did but I still continued to read.
Not as intriguing as the preceding books.......2003-04-27
In just a few words, I can honestly say I agree with John Mort from Booklist. Read his review of this book and you will find my thoughts. I was disappointed.I had a difficult time finishing it.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Yossi Klein Halevi, born in America and now an Israeli citizen, embarked on a spiritual quest in order to appreciate the religious dimensions of conflicts in the Middle East. Beginning in 1998, he undertook "an attempt at religious empathy" in order "to test whether faith could be a means of healing rather than intensifying the conflicts in this land." Halevi, author of the critically acclaimed Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist, chose "to pray and meditate with my Christian and Muslim fellow believers," as "a conscious refutation of the way we religious people of different faiths have always judged each other--by what we believe about God, rather than how we experience God's presence." The holy days of each religion form the structure of At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden, and Halevi's encounters with Sufi dervishes, Muslim sheiks, monks, nuns, and laypeople are entertaining, poignant, and sometimes fearsome. The stories do not separate "spirituality" from "politics"--or history, psychology, or theology. His commitment to describing an integrated experience of the many aspects of religious life helps to make the book a successful exercise in empathy, and a book of lasting literary value. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
A brilliantly observed memoir of an unprecedented and remarkable spiritual journey.
While religion has fuelled the often violent conflict plaguing the Holy Land, Yossi Klein Halevi wondered whether it could be a source of unity as well. To find the answer, this religious Israeli Jew began a two–year exploration to discover a common language with his Christian and Muslim neighbours. He followed their holiday cycles, befriended Christian monastics and Islamic mystics, and joined them in prayer in monasteries and mosques in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.
At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden traces that remarkable spiritual journey. Halevi candidly reveals how he fought to reconcile his own fears and anger as a Jew to relate to Christians and Muslims as fellow spiritual seekers. He chronicles the difficulty of overcoming multiple obstacles注eological, political, historical, and psychological注at separate believers of the three monotheistic faiths. And he introduces a diverse range of people attempting to reconcile the dichotomous heart of this sacred place柠struggle central to Israel, but which resonates for us all.

An honest, humble, inspiring adventure.......2006-09-08
I just love this guy. Starting with a simple urge to connect with his neighbors, Yossi Halevi embarks on an awkward, fascinating, dangerous journey through Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. He discovers a series of surprising characters who dream, not just of peace between Jews, Muslims and Christians, but of spiritual friendship. And the story of these fragile, budding friendships becomes an adventure of almost overwhelming power.
I want to quote from one episode, where Halevi and a madcap Jew called Eliyahu Charanamrit McLean attend a mosque in Karawa village on the West Bank:
"This mosque was a family project: Everyone here belonged to the Abu-Laben clan. They were working class people; the shaykh himself was a car mechanic.
"What do the other Muslims think of you?" Eliyahu asked.
"That we're crazy," replied Saud's father. "They think we chant the name of 'Abdallah' instead of 'Allah"". Laughter.
I asked Saud what he experienced during the zakir [or dance of remembering God]. "That our hearts kept getting closer and closer to God," he said, with the Sufi vagueness I'd so often encountered from Ibrahim. ...
Ibrahim, not to be poetically outdone, added "Our souls went up to heaven like clouds".
"When you pray together," said the shaykh's father, "you form one heart".
I felt sad for this forlorn Sufi Shteibl. Here was an Islam with which we could make peace, yet it was almost absurdly perepheral. Still, maybe the fact that a handful of Muslims and Jews had danced together was enough for God to work with; perhaps He would magnify our prayers, widen the circle of ecstasy." (p. 104-105)
Halevi is realist enough to claim no easy victories. As the level of sectarian violence rises again, his network of friends retains little but hope and prayer. It's a marvelous book.
A study in courage.......2006-05-17
One problem with writing intelligent books on religion is that religion demands the author experience it. Halevi takes this difficult challenge and seeks common ground with Christians and Muslims. To find this common ground he is willing to push his boundaries, go beyond his fears to find a common ground.
In his efforts he encounters a Catholic order of religious that seeks to return to the Jewish roots of Jesus as a common ground for Jewish-Christian relations; a Catholic monk of the Melkite rite (Jerusalem rite) seeing Arab-Jewish understanding through the Arab Christian; a common ground of genocide with Armenian Christians; a common ground of love with Sufi sheiks ...
Throughout his search runs a thread of the common monotheistic underpinnings of the three major religions of Israel. A second thread is a more universal acceptance that includes the great Eastern traditions - Buddhism and Hinduism. The third thread is the history of the Jewish people and the reality of strife in Israel. Through these threads, Halevi challenges the reader to confront his or her prejudices in the political and religious arenas.
The net result is not a great book, but one I highly recommend because of the issues raised and the author's personal willingness to share his experience in addressing the issues.
Entrance to the Garden of Eden: A Jew's Search for Hope with Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land.......2005-10-08
This is a must for all ethnic groups to read.
Hope.......2005-09-10
The title is exact. Halevi is an extraordinary person: a mystic deeply rooted in his Jewish faith but who can share a common search for peace and religious experience with Christians, the historic persecutors of Jews, and with Muslims, who have now become the "enemy." I know three of the communities of Christians he shared with and the descriptions are accurate so I can assume the Muslim sections are just as fair. Anyone searching for religious and mystic truth that is non-violent but serious about faith and God will love this book.
What real faith is all about. Amazing........2005-02-14
Yossi Halevy thinks he is only writing about interfaith connections in the holy land, but in fact the most inspiring aspect of the book is the delicate portrait of his own faith in God, where this deep faith takes him, and the grace of goodwill and wisdom that it creates inside his soul.

TO MY DEAR CHILDREN AND COMPANIONS J. E. 0., M. 0. W. AND THEIR ELDER BROTHER C. F. 0. WHO HAS SINCE DEFAMED FROM US TO THE JERUSALEM THAT IS ABOVE NOTE. THE writer scarcely needs to say that this book is no record of Eastern travel her experiences in the Holy Land having no special importance, save as making more vivid to herself the scenes to which the following history is devoted. It may be well, how ever, to say that these holy places may be visited with no exertion that is beyond the powers of a person in ordinary health, though neither young nor adventurous. Nothing can exceed the care and kindness of the attendants who escort the not-robust travellers through a region where convenience and comfort are by no means the rule of life. And she has a special remembrance to make of the kindness of the Greek ecclesiastical authorities in Jerusalem, and of the constant attention of the excellent drago man, David Jamal, who was the Providence of her little party. INTRODUCTION. npHE story of Jerusalem, is one of the most wonderful - L in the world, besides being of unparalleled impor- tance to the human race. Insignificant in power even at its greatest, it has been, through all the ages of secular history, no better than a tributary and dependent of great empires which have risen and fallen and passed away, yet left this little city on its hills, always the most interesting spot on earth, the indestructible, the source of the mightiest influence, the foundation of the greatest systems of earthly law and thought. Before the litera ture of Greece had been thought of, song and story and the noblest inspirations of philosophy and poetry had come to being upon the little crests of Zion and Moriah the Temple had been built there which has never faded, though destroyed, burned, broken down a dozen times, swept far from sight and knowledge, from the memory and imagination of men and the records of humanity had begun to be put forth in full splendour of character and impulse and feeling, in chronicles which are as fresh and living now as when they were transcripts of the life of three thousand years ago. We go no farther than the heroic age of Hebrew genius when we name this date beyond, in the mist of the ages, before even ancient Egypt had begun to engrave her rigid annals upon stone, the record goes back, not in hieroglyphics, but in his

Book Description
A decade's worth of prolific short stories are showcased in this compilation of Robert Reed's best work. Among the dozen thought-provoking tales is the never-before-published "Abducted Souls," about a college student who becomes increasingly unsure of himself and his self-worth when the alien abduction he experienced as a child is questioned. Also included is the Asimov's Science Fiction Reader's Choice Award–winning "Savior," about a military commander who is held accountable for tortuous acts that may have saved the human race. The hot topic of cloning is discussed in futuristic terms in the title tale, "The Cuckoo's Boys," which tells of a lonely genius who clones himself, not once, but millions of times, and of a teacher who tests and challenges three of these clones. Two ageless aliens become friends with Ash, an immortal human, as he strives to help them recover lost memories in "Night of Time," a selection taken from the popular Marrow book. The collection closes with an afterword by the author, in which he details the genesis of each story.

Wonderful Personal Teaching and Spiritual Healing Book .......2007-04-13
This is an excellent book for spiritual growth and renewel. I just bought another one for my best friend. I am reading through once for an overview, then starting again to work some of the exercises. I will be keeping this book on the shelf for a very long time for reference. Thank you!
3 stars for sheer audacity..........2005-06-02
There is an astonishing array of New Age BS out in the world today and it seems that anyone with an angle (or angel) and a gift for selling and even the most minor writing talent can get themselves a book deal. Hooray for mediocrity! I have given this book three stars for sheer audacity, but also because it serves as a lesson in how to con your way into a book deal and an audience. The woman lies about her background and, when criticized, her critics are branded as 'racists'. The book is such a hodge-podge of disjointed information and "borrowed" (polite term) techniques that I think I'll wander off and invent my own new religion based on...whatever. I'll make up some fantastical lie of a past and throw in a few other harrowing experiences and hey, voila! Book deal! Audience! I've gotta give this woman her due for temerity and lack of conscience. Read this piece of tripe and learn that you can still fool many of the people most of the time.
Might be better.......2004-09-08
All in all this book is pretty good but the author does advertise an awfull lot for her own services and products.
2 to 2 1/2 stars I suppose.......2004-08-28
I bought this book at a time when I was looking for source materials on native american culture and living for the non native american person. The book came reccomended to me by a friend who owned it with a word of caution that it was just alright. I went out and bought it, read through it and found it ok in some places and questionable in others. The author does advertise her other "for sale" services quite a bit which gets a little daunting, however there are some chapters which are well written and full of imagery. The two I liked best were her chapter on crystals where she describes a gift giving ceremony between her and friends, something which I have enjoyed doing myself. I also liked the part onbuilding your own personal altar, unlike other new age authors who proclaim altar set ups and endless tools, the author of this book tells readers to have an empty altar, perhaps covered in a sacred cloth which can be a simple focal point rather than a holder of all sorts of tools. All in all If you want this book then buy it used, use those parts of it that speak to you and discard the rest. Incidently, there is a picture of the author in the back of the book and looking at her I couldnt help but feel a bit uneasy, she dosent present a very spiritual image.
