"Daily life exhilarated with the richness and evocativeness of poetry."
WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD
The novel that is sweeping the country. A beautiful story of 20th-century womanhood, of Gram, the Queen of Persia herself, who rules a house where five daughters and four granddaughters spin out the tragedies and triumphs of rural life in the 1950's.

One of my top ten books of all time.......2007-07-24
Years ago when I definitely couldn't afford to buy books, much less hard cover books, I bought this book after reading it at the libary. It remains one of my all time favorite books. The characters are unforgettable and the author's style and voice just stunning. I reread it every so often just because it gives me such pleasure and joy. I will always be grateful that Ms. Chase wrote this book.
A gift.......2006-08-08
I have given this novel to countless friends and relatives, particularly those who say "What should I read?" Beautiful, lyrical prose that still tells a story (sometimes beautiful, lyrical prose doesn't). I love the collective voice of the narrator(s) -- two sets of sisters, all cousins. A masterpiece.
A wonderfully vivid extended family story.......1997-10-21
The Queen of Persia refers to the matriarch of a rural midwest family fifty or so years ago. If you enjoy a book that is at least equally concerned with its moments as it is with where it is going, then this book will probably be good for you. It has been over two years since I read this book and I can still see and feel what Joan Chase wrote ... the overall atmosphere and setting as well as the individuals involved.

Why did Barry Sanders, one of the game's most exciting and explosive running backs, suddenly retire just as he was closing in on the all-time NFL rushing record? At the height of his career, he walked away without explanation. In this amazing book, Sanders reveals for the first time how he came to make the biggest decision of his life.
Customer Reviews:
ok.......2007-05-07
The greatest back of all time writes a pretty boring book. some things are interesting. I wish the DVD was better...but you could make a 10 disc set with his highlights.
INTERESTING.......2006-08-05
THIS IS ABOUT FORMER DETROIT LION GREAT BARRY SANDERS. HE WROTE THIS HIMSELF WITH A LITTLE HELP. HIS STORY IS SHORT, SWEET AND VERY WELL WRITTEN. IT ALSO INCLUDES A DVD SHOWING SOME OF HIS RUNS. I THINK ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS IS HIS REASONS FOR RETIRING WHEN HE WAS ON THE VERGE OF BECOMING THE TOP RUSHER OF ALL TIME. BARRY IS A CHRISTIAN AND IS HIS OWN MAN. THE BOOK IS FOR ALL LION AND FOOTBALL FANS. ENJOY.
Barry Sanders Highlight DVD...... FINALLY!!! But..............2006-07-08
I've been looking for a Barry Sanders highlights DVD for years.... good news - there finally is one, it comes with the book. Bad news? It's only about 20 minutes long, and doesn't show many of his spectacular runs. The book is outstanding, as it's written pretty much by Barry himself, and has great comments from other players in the NFL, giving him the praise he deserves. Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, they have entire 60 minute DVD's (and more) on their lives.... if any player in the history of football should have one, it's Barry Sanders. All in all, if you like football at all, and appreciate magic, this is a must have, from the most talented running back in the history of the game.
Barry Sanders story...short and sweet.......2004-02-06
The newly elected Hall of Fame running back, Barry Sanders, was always a man of many words and his recently released autobiography is fitting in its 139 page, picture-filled 8 x 10 work.
If a picture says a thousand words, than the included 19-minute DVD featuring Sanders and his accomplishments is worth a million and add visuals to the former Detroit Lion running backs accomplishments.
"Now You See Him..." is the entire life history of Sanders, the people that shaped his life and his accomplishments along the way, from North High School, Oklahoma State University and his only NFL team, the Detroit Lions.
Sanders writes of his football beginnings and the beginning of his doubtful beginnings in football due to his small stature. Sanders admitted being shorter, but always faster.
His high school football career was stunted (pun intended) as he played behind older brother, Byron, and was not utilized as a tailback until his senior year and after a coaching change.
Sanders writes of himself as being a team player, foregoing a chance to take the state rushing title after he had 262 yards in the final season game. His coach gave him the option of securing the title, but deferred to his teammates playing.
Surprisingly, Sanders was not highly recruited and took the opportunity to rush for the Cowboys at Oklahoma State University, again behind a superb back, Thurman Thomas.
As the third pick in the 1988 NFL draft, Sanders began his 10-year career with the Detroit Lions, playing under Wayne Fontes for 8-years and Bobby Ross for two turbulent years.
Moving through the to later chapters the reader discovers Sanders' thoughts about the pressure of surpassing Walter Payton's rushing record as the former Chicago Bear was dealing with his own life-threatening illness.
Sanders explains his side of retirement in chapter 15 "I Knew it was Over," explaining the Lions 5-11 season, consistent troublesome negotiations regarding his renewed contracts and the direction of the team.
Sanders includes his retirement letter, sent to the Wichita Eagle, but expands on his disgruntlement with Detroit general manger Chuck Schmidt.
What the book may be lacking, the DVD adds, but does not totally save the book.
The 19-minute DVD includes television footage of Sanders as his best, utilizing his "jump back" style of running in high school, college and the NFL.
If after 139 pages you are not impressed with Sanders, his life and career, the DVD is a waste. If you are a fan of Sanders, his team and his skill, the DVD is a great highlight film included with the book.
Sanders is soft-spoken in his words about his career, his teammates and his competitors. His book is easy to read, picturesque and his DVD inclusion technologically innovative, similar to his running style.
Barry Sanders, the Great Writer........2004-02-03
Barry Sanders is perhaps the next coming of James Joyce. If you don't believe me, just take a look at her brilliant command of prose. It flows ever so delicately through the travails of her life. The language has such a rhythm that is unparalleled by contemporary literature. Five stars. A-plus.

Book Description
Two years ago Ellie Byron was the only witness to the brutal murder of a young woman. Charles Penn, a hard-eyed man with a history of violence, was convicted of the crime. Now he's escaped -- and another woman is dead.
Ellie fears she may be next and turns to the only person she trusts; attorney Joe Gable. Joe would give his life to protect Ellie, but neither of them knows just how deadly an enemy they face -- or how close he is.
Then the police discover that both crimes mirror events in a bestselling mystery series. And when the third book in the series is released, Joe and Ellie realize that time has run out. Because in this book the killer eliminates the only threat to his freedom. The last death is the death of the witness.
Customer Reviews:
on my list as one of 10 worst books!.......2007-07-27
I agree with everything said in all the one star reviews! The writing, editing, character development, storytelling and sex in this book were horrible. I spent only a dollar on it at a used book sale but it wasn't even worth that. I read it to the end to see if it improved but it was a colossal waste of time.
Series keeps improving.......2006-01-24
Two years ago, Ellie Byron witnessed a murder during Mardi Gras from her hotel balcony. She was not able to identify the killer, but habitual criminal Charles Penn was still convicted of the crime. Penn escapes from prison and another victim turns up with a similar MO that is patterned after a series of mystery novels, and the police think that the killer may want to harm Ellie.
Ellie has a tragic past. An orphan at ten, she ran away and managed to be taken in by a not so nice family. After a couple of attacks by who she thinks is Penn, she is reluctant to go to the authorities. She fears that further investigation into her background may bring light to her not so pleasant past. But neighbor and attorney Joe has eyes for Ellie and pledges to keep her safe.
While the culprit is relatively easy to discover, the chemistry between the leads and the quirky citizens that make up the Toussaint parish allow the reader to forgive a lot of things, and makes for an entertaining story including the inclusion of characters from a supposedly unrelated novel popping up near the end. But, will Joe and Ellie be able to figure out who the killer is before the next mystery novel (aptly titled "Death of a Witness") is published?
And any reader familiar with the Toussaint series will like catching up with old characters from previous novels. Just one question - when will Father Cyrus renounce his vows and take up with Madge already?
Now You Don't, See Him that is!.......2006-01-04
If you've read Stella Cameron you're familiar with Toussaint. Louisana and you're about to go back again in this spicy thriller that stars Ellie Byron, who ran away from home when she was fifteen, winding up in Toussaint, where she now owns a bookstore. Two years ago Ellie witnessed a woman murdered with an ice pick during Mardi Gras and though she could not identify the killer, her testomany helped put him away. Charles Penn was the man she helped send up the river and now, during a prison transfer, he's escaped. And not long after another woman is ice picked to death and it looks like Penn may be the killer.
However, maybe not, as the murders are apparenlty copies of murders in local mystery writer Sonia Elliot's books. It turns out she'd written a couple books called DEATH AT MARDI GRAS and DEATH IN DIAMONDS and the two ice pick murders mirror the killings in those books. As it turns out Ms. Elliot has another book about to come out and Ellie has an advance copie, so she's got a pretty good idea how the next killing is going to take place. Only trouble is, is Ellie going to be the victim.
So there you have the premise of a very good mystery. Mix that up with Ms. Cameron's very steamy sex scenes and you have the kind of book that both thrills and excites. I loved this book, but then I love most anything Ms. Cameron writes. Oh yeah, I forget to mention what Ellie ran away from, oh wait, I guess that's one of the many things I'll have to leave to you to find out when you read the book.
Can't get much worse than this.......2005-11-30
There are way too many characters to follow. Ms. Caneron's descriptions of sexual encounters and violence is graphically over the top. And in the final chapter, the storeroom sex between the bride and groom at their wedding party made me want to take a bath in a strong antiseptic. I tossed this book in the trash!
Now You See Him.......2005-11-03
I found this book to be very boring. I could not finish it. There is no character development. I felt as if there must have been a book prior to this one in which all the previous allusions to past actions were explained. However, the book jacket did not indicate this. Based on this book, I would not recommend this author to anyone nor would I read any more of her books. Hopefully her other books are better written.

Bond-Like Cougar (5 + stars).......2007-02-16
Book Description: NOW YOU SEE HIM... The man who called himself Michael Dowd wasn't exactly what he seemed. Wherever Michael went, it seemed to Francey Neeley, danger followed. But she couldn't escape an attraction to him. He was trying to pry information from her about a terrorist group, a group that was trying to kill him - and her. Soon, Francey became swept into a world of death and deceit, but she couldn't stay away from Michael. Somehow they had won each other's hearts - a dangerous combination for both.
Romantic suspense as only Anne Stuart can do it. Just when you think the story is going in one direction there's a twist then a turn and the plot thickens. The required, multi-talented bad-boy is present and making things happen. A must read for any Stuart fan.

Echoes of Moonrise!!.......2002-09-27
This book is very similar in style as Moonrise, and since that is my favourite Anne Stuart book that is high praise.
Francey Neeley's life is turned into a nightmare because she thought she loved the wrong man. She fell for The lilt of the Irish voice, the dancing blues eyes and the charm of a man from Ireland, but learn all that was a facade, a mask to hide his real purpose in marrying her - to gain her fortune and use her to get back into Ireland. He planned to kill her afterwards. Francey learns this from his 'sister' who was actually his lover. She tells Francey of the plot to kill the Queen of England when she is visiting the United States, but says someone has blow his cover - she believes it is Francey and both rush to see if they can stop him from the suicide mission.
They arrive just in time to see her attempt to kill the Queen, but she is saved by her guard who takes several bullets before killing the Irish Terrorist.
Now months later, Francey is hiding out on a Jamaican island trying to heal her soul, when her cousin says he is sending a man to stay with her. A man supposed hurt in a car accident, named Michael Dowd. She instantly sees the man is weak and recovering and her heart feels for his pain.
He is recovering all right, but not from a car accident, but the bullets her boyfriend pumped into him while he nearly gave his life to save the Queen. He has come to find Francey, find out what she knew about the incident, how much she is involved. Make love to her to get the information, and then kill her if he discovered she is one of the terrorists.
From the instant her arrives on the island, it is clear someone is trying to kill them both so they must run from their lives.
This again is one of those beautiful gems that Stuart conjures so well!! Another of those Gamma rogues with black hearts and even blacker souls that you cannot help but love!

Book Description
His name was Rob Castor. Quite possibly, you've heard of him. He became a minor cult celebrity in his early twenties for writing a book of darkly pitch-perfect stories set in a stupid upstate New York town. About a dozen years later, he murdered his writer-girlfriend and committed suicide. . . .
The deaths of Rob Castor and his girlfriend begin a wrenching and enthrallingly suspenseful story that mines the explosive terrains of love and paternity, marriage and its delicate intricacies, family secrets and how they fester over time, and ultimately the true nature of loyalty and trust, friendship and envy, deception and manipulation.
As the media takes hold of this sensational crime, a series of unexpected revelations unleashes hidden truths in the lives of those closest to Rob. At the center of this driving narrative is Rob's childhood best friend, Nick Framingham, whose ten-year marriage to his college sweetheart is faltering. Shocked by Rob's death, Nick begins to reevaluate his own life and his past, and as he does so, a fault line opens up beneath him, leading him all the way to the novel's startling conclusion.
In this ambitious and thrilling novel, award-winning author Eli Gottlieb—with extraordinarily luxuriant and evocative prose—takes us deep into the human psyche, where the most profound of secrets are kept.

Okay for Philip K.......2005-09-05
About half-way through the stories right now. The stories are just okay for PKD, but better than your average writer. Enjoyed earlier collections more.
Some of Dick's most personal works.......2004-03-28
It is not that surprising to witness how this collection of short stories by Philip K. Dick is the least appreciated, since his later novels also tend to be greeted by varied reactions. But this volume is at least as good as the preceding four, and maybe even better. Here we find Dick less concerned with traditional forms, and perhaps more inclined than ever before to explore the issues that really interested him; many revolve around religion and theology. The stories were published from the mid-1960s to the 1980s, and reflect the thematic preoccupations of Dick's longer works from each period. The breadth of the tales is considerable, as the stories vary from deceptively light satire (The War With the Fnools, The Day Mr. Computer...) to politico-religious tensions (The Little Black Box, Faith of our Fathers), testimonies (The Eye of the Sibyl, Rautavaara's Case) and solitary soul-searching (The Electric Ant), often spanning all of these approaches in a single story. This collection might not be the best entry point in Dick's work, but a fair accessment of that work's relevance would not be possible without this essential book.
Later but not necessarily better.......2003-03-22
In this final volume of the Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick, we get a chance to read the short stories he wrote from the late 1960s to his death. For those who were accustomed to the imaginative and off-beat work of the first four volumes, this last book may be a bit jarring: as Dick's life got stranger, so did his stories. Even in the genre of the strange that is science fiction, stranger is not automatically better.
Some of the stories in this collection are every bit as good as the ones in the other books. Tales such as "The Pre-Persons," "Your Appointment Will Be Yesterday" and "The Electric Ant" are among his better stories. There are also stories that would eventually become novels like Counter-Clock World, Dr. Bloodmoney and The Divine Invasion. Then there are the previously unpublished works...which are strictly for PKD completists; there is good reason these were not published.
His later short stories, like his later novels (Valis, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer) are often permeated with the theological and hallucinogenic qualities that also dominated Dick's life. These later stories are dominated more by ideas than by good writing; compare the title story to the similarly themed Waterspider in Volume 4 and you'll see the earlier story is far better.
Overall this book rates a weak four stars, although the whole set rates a full five stars. Even if a bit disappointing compared with the previous books, this still has enough quality to be well worth reading.
If I could only recommend 2 Phil Dick books --.......2002-06-08
This volume has many of the stories from the out-of-print Ballantine "Best of Phil Dick." While his earlier work is more literate, his later style in stories/novels became much looser, but just as enjoyable. The themes here, like his novel "Do androids dream," are more mind-blowing and less reliant on finding a new twist on an old sci-fi theme. "Faith of our fathers," and "I hope I shall arrive soon"(probably the inspiration for movies "Open your eyes/Vanilla sky") are the most powerful, thoughtful and fun stories (how the heck does he do it?!) but may not resonate with gadget-oriented, non-psychological readers. Nevertheless, this is an indispensible book, and like "Do androids dream," my choice when giving a Phil Dick book to friends.
This has 'The Electric Ant' and 'I hope I Shall Arrive Soon'.......2001-12-11
Those two stories make it worth the price of admission. There are other, great stories included too.

It began with The Christmas Box, a humble story about a caretaker and his family who befriend a lonely widow at Christmas time. In The Christmas Box Miracle, author Richard Paul Evans offers the back story, showing us how his self- published book became a runaway bestseller. We first meet the author as a young boy, learning about the family and faith that led him to become such as reliable and unpretentious narrator. As it turns out, Evans grew up in a Mormon household amongst a band of taunting brothers and a few childhood ghosts. His mother lost a stillborn daughter when Evans was a toddler. She also suffered from severe depression and suicidal tendencies. This backdrop helps us understand Evans's dedication to bring healing and hope to life. More than a publishing success story, The Christmas Box Miracle speaks about Evans's ability to change readers' lives and foster miracle after miracle. Fans of Evans already know to pull out their handkerchiefs. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
In 1994, Richard Paul Evans, then an unknown writer, self-published a short book entitled The Christmas Box. That book went on to become an international bestseller, selling more than seven million copies and touching the lives of many more people along the way.
The Christmas Box Miracle is the story behind the book that has become a Christmas classic: how a man writes and publishes a book which helps grieving people to heal and lost souls to find their way home. It is Evans's story: his own spiritual journey and stories of people he encountered along the way -- miraculous stories of healing and divinity that often defy explanation.
In sharing the story behind The Christmas Box, Richard Paul Evans has given us a story of miracles, hope and healing for all seasons.

What?.......2007-07-01
I am a big fan of the Christmas Box books, but when I saw this book I thought UHHHHHH I guess he needs even more money. RPE must have realized that he was a flash in the pan, and was desprate to hang on to his falling fame. This book does have its moments though, but it sounds like a broken record. They were giving this book away.. a free copy with every $10 purchase. I wish RPE would get over himself he's no Charles Dickens!!!
excellent book.......2007-03-20
this book is really eye opening as to faith and where it can lead you if you let it.
Powerful, yet simple message.......2007-01-14
Unfortunately I read this after reading "The Light of Christmas" so I knew most of the story line but it was still worth the read. It is a simple story with a powerful message about the importance of our individual lives and the lives of those who love us. The Christian message of hope in life is prevalent but subtle and doesn't come across as 'preaching' while still delivering its impact.
Buy more than one!.......2005-12-05
I loved this book from the beginning to the end. It is filled with profound thought evoking experiences and letters. I always love "the story behind the story" and that is exactly what this is. I suggest buying more than one because then you will have one to keep and one that you can share with out having to worry about tracking it down later.
This is the BEST book I've ever read........2003-12-24
Even if you haven't read "The Christmas Box," and don't know what it's about you should read "The Christmas Box Miracle!" It's the most inspiring, and moving book I've ever read. I hope you take the opportunity you've been given, and read this awesome book. It will change your life for the better.
