Book Description

Though both gorgeous, the two Rodgers sisters couldn't be more different. Hennesey, a brilliant straight-A student, is soon off to college on a full scholarship. She's in a strong relationship with Rafe, a recently released convict who's trying to turn his life around after being unjustly jailed. He took a drug rap for his old friend Smoke, who has since become the most ruthless drug dealer in Chicago. Rafe wants nothing more to do with his old friends -- especially when he falls for Hennesey.

On the other hand, Alizé is perfectly comfortable relying on her undeniable sex appeal to get what she wants. When Livvy, the girls' mother, announces that they have to move out of her apartment because she is getting a smaller place to save up money and go back to school, Alizé panics as she is in desperate need of some money of her own. She and her girlfriends come up with an outrageous plan to score some fast cash -- persuading the men with fat pockets they meet at clubs to take the girls to a hotel and then drugging them and making off with their wallets and jewelry. Unfortunately for Alizé, one of their first victims is none other than Smoke, Rafe's old buddy. Once robbed, he's bent on revenge -- and the violent chain of events that follow will change the Rodgers family forever.

This one dragged out at times but was overall a very decent book. The way the characters connected made for a coincidental story line but interesting nonetheless.

I really wanted Livvy to find out about the "encounter" between Alize and Carlos. That should have ignited the fight between Livvy and Carlos---not the sudden discovery of some meaningless woman. That was pretty lame. Women go to nursing school all the time with the assistance of government loans or grants. Livvy's intense need for the hospital scholarship as her only hope baffled me. Sharika disappeared from the book once Livvy sprouted a mind of her own with regards to Wade.

The money Alize and her friends made for their "hits" was barely enough for first and last months rent; much less furniture, utilities, food, etc. What was Alize thinking? That line of "work" was far more degrading than a job at a fast food restaurant or department store. Lisa, not wanting anything to do with the scheme in the beginning, turned out to be the most foolish of all the girls.

It was constantly stated that Hennessey was "smart", but her intelligence definitely wasn't reflected in the way she begged Rafe to be with her. It wasn't anything romantic about that. It was purely sick.

The book intensified towards the end and the tragic events threw me. I was then picked up by a story-book ending. All's well that ends well and the "smoke" was out.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS WRITTEN BY A MALE AUTHOR OTHER THAN ERIC JEROME DICKEY.......2006-08-20

This book was amazing..It was definitely a page turner and the characters-(Livvy, her 2 daughters Alize and Hennesey, Wade, Raphiel, and Smoke...)-come to life as you read.(I don't want to go into detail because I'll end up giving the story away)....I read books like Carrie buys shoes on Sex and the City.....but this book had me reading until the last page....Although the ending was suprising it didn't disappoint me, but I will be disappointed if RM Johnson doesn't do a Sequel to Dating Games....For anyone out there whose questioning whether or not to buy this book if it was the last dollar I had until my next pay day I would buy the book...LOL maybe not my last dollar but certainly close to it....ONCE AGAIN EXCELLENT BOOK KEEP DOING YA THING MR. JOHNSON AND I'LL BE WAITING FOR THE SEQUEL!!!!

I WOULD HAVE KICKED MY TWIN SISTERS ASS EVERY WHICH WAY FOR THE GRIMEY SH@T SHE IS CAPABLE OF. GOOD BOOK

4 out of 5 stars Great Hood Story.......2006-02-21

I enjoyed this book. I purchased it some time ago with Love Frustration and I'M just know reading it. It was a good page turner. It starts a little slow but has enough action to keep you interested and midway though the book IT'S ON. Henny and Ally were total opposites even tough they are twins. I wanted Livvy to find out about Carlos sleeping with Ally. And their mother(Livvy) was dealing with her own issues with men.
I'm use to reading black novels where everyone is educated and on top of their game in the workforce but this book gives a different setting on where the characters are working average jobs but trying to do better the right or wrong way.
I hate what happen to Lisa but you would have thought she had more sense than to be riding in a stolen BENTLEY. I think R.M Johnson is a wonderful author. Other good books by him are The Million Dollar Divorce and Love Frustrations.

this book is the last of the mckenna series and the first one i read. and i spent almost two years to complete the set on the strength of this book. ms. michaels writes such heartwarming stories, and this one is no exception. this one is about the youngest mckenna brother, colin, and rachel, a heroine a lot like the other mckenna heroines. it's just a pity there isn't more about colin's older brothers here, just the sisters-in-law.

    3 out of 5 stars Weird.. definitely.......2004-12-13

I do like fantasy so why not superhero romance?
Think of the one-dimensionality of a cartoon where good superheroes fight someone who wants to be master of the universe, set it in the contemporary world, add normal people who are in relationships with said superheroes, and a genius child. Then let everyone be related to each other, the villain kidnap the child, framing the superhero dad, who is already suspect by the superhero authorities..
The story might've worked better for me with fewer characters, so Kenner could flesh them out more, and if she relied less on different superhero powers. At times the ordinary humans seemed more competent than the superheroes. I did like the ferret though, having had one before.
If you enjoyed the other books in the series this would definitely be a must-read. Otherwise, this is OK light reading but only if you suspend more belief than usual.

    1 out of 5 stars Redundant Hangups.......2003-11-13

This book starts off with some interesting ideas. Super heroes based on mythology. Quickly she overuses phrases such as 'frowed his brow' and 'licked his lips' so much so that it is laughable and equally irritating.

Every emotion seems to be explained at one point or another by 'licking ones own lips.' The sex scenes are also ridiculous and not a very good idea (many little organisms live in saltwater).

This book has moments of adult reading stewed in with writing styles more appropriate for the 'Babysitters Club' series.

Though this book will be the last Kenner novel I open; I really blame the editor for allowing much of this material to ever see print.

4 out of 5 stars Love in the Deep.......2003-08-18

The continuation of Kenner's series of superhero Protectors based in part on the myths of the Greek Gods. Here we meet Jason Murphy, who has the ability to talk to fish (a talent in great demand, I'm sure) and turns into a dolphin when underwater. Seven years ago he left pregnant girlfriend Lane to deal with his father - the universally reviled Hieronymous. Instead of defeating dad, Jason was captured by him and has spent over six years in a fish tank, being interrogated by good old pop. Having eventually escaped, Jason finds he's been demoted to second class Protector and like his half brother Mordichai is viewed with suspicion by the Elders and Council. Unfairly, because unlike his brother, Jason knows where his loyalties lie.

Lane, sister of Taylor from Aphrodite's Girdle, had no idea who Jason really was, and so far as she is concerned, Jason left her when he found out he was to be a father, never to be heard from again. Her son Davy is now the focus of her life, her little genius whom she doesn't realise is half Protector and whose intellect, like Hieronymous, is his principle power. Davy is about to turn seven, when his powers will blossom and for a moment those powers will be vulnerable. In the meanwhile, Hieronymous has come up with an evil plan to add to his own intellect ...

This story is another Kenner gem, and like the others in the series is told with wit and originality. The humour keeps the story grounded, as does the relationships between many of the characters, including that of Hieronymous and his sons. There are very `human' issues dealt with - jealousy, loyalty, love, trust - even for those with super powers. Although it's not my favourite book in the series, it's a good addition to it and advances the plot for more characters than just the central two.

    APHRODITE'S SECRET

    Julie Kenner

    Love Spell
    May 2003

Jason Murphy has spent the last few months preparing for fatherhood. However, his "blessed event" will be seven years old in just five days, and according to the rules and regulations of the Venerate Council of Protectors Jason's halfling son is expected to the Olympus Elementary Facility before his seventh birthday. There are sure to be questions from his son's mother, Lane Kent, along the lines of where have you been for the last seven years, seven months? Will Lane believe the truth? That in trying to make the world a better place for her and their unborn child, Jason had confronted his father, the odious Hieronymous, and dear old dad had kept him prisoner in an aquarium on a hidden island. Oh, yes, he did forget to tell Lane that he was a mortal protector, or "superhero", and his powers are piscatorial and cetacean related. Translated, he can communicate with fish and he can also transform himself into a dolphin.

Lane has found a good man that loves her and Davy, but she just can't commit to Aaron because there is just no spark. Fat lot of good those sparks are; the very day she told Jason, the love of her life, that she was pregnant, he disappeared and has not been heard from since. Life has been kind of hard on this single mom and she does not know how she would have made it if it hadn't been for her foster brother, George Taylor, his wife, Zoe, and all their friends. Today Zoe has taken Davy to Sea World so she can have some private time with Aaron, and Lane knows that Zoe with her superhero powers can look out for Davy as well as his mother can.

Disaster strikes when a freak storm hits over Sea World, Zoe is locked up, and Davy is abducted. Zoe thinks she recognizes the man that took Davy as Jason Murphy, a fellow mortal protector that must have turned outcast. Zoe is helpless to save her nephew as her hormones and her powers are both on the fritz.

Jason could not get to Davy in time to save him from being taken, but he recognizes "good guy/bad guy Mordichai" as the jerk that made off with his son. Now in the face of disaster Jason is reunited with Lane, and he must convince her that he will save their son and also that he loves her more than life.

It's a toss up as to who has more fun with Ms. Kenner's extremely imaginative, humorous, and very sensual paranormal "Aphrodite" fantasies - the reader or the writer. APHRODITE'S SECRET is another enjoyable escape into the world of talking ferrets, shape shifters, and super heroes and heroines. The Aphrodite series is refreshing and utterly irresistible, and they just keep getting better and better with each new offering.

    5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2003-06-03

This book was great it had everything that I really enjoy in a Romance novel!! I have read alot of Julie Kenner yet, this was one of her better ones. The good characters and a strong plot was a good twist to the story!!! My main issue with this book was that it went slow at the beginnning yet at the end it picked up and started to take off in a very good way! you should read this and try it for yourself

Eight-year-old Horty Bluett is mocked by his classmates and abused by his adoptive parents until the day his father severs three of his fingers. He runs away, taking only a gem-eyed doll he calls Junky, and joins a carnival. Finding acceptance at last, Horty never dreams that Junky is more than a toy, nor does he realize that a threat far greater than his cruel father inhabits the carnival and has been searching for Horty longer than he has been alive.

Though less well-known than Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, or Robert A. Heinlein, Theodore Sturgeon (1918-1985) is even more important to the development of literary and humanistic science fiction. He received the Hugo, Nebula, and International Fantasy Awards, and the World Fantasy Life Achievement Award. The Dreaming Jewels (1950) was his first novel. --Cynthia Ward

        Book Description

"One of the masters of modern science fiction."—The Washington Post Book World

Eight-year-old Horty Bluett has never known love. His adoptive parents are violent; his classmates are cruel. So he runs away from home and joins a carnival. Performing alongside the fireaters, snakemen and "little people," Horty is accepted. But he is not safe. For when he loses three fingers in an accident and they grow back, it becomes clear that Horty is not like other boys. And it is a difference some people might want to use.

But his difference risks not only his own life but the lives of the outcasts who provided for him, for so many years, with a place to call home. In The Dreaming Jewels, Theodore Sturgeon renders the multiple wounds of loneliness, fear, and persecution with uncanny precision. Vividly drawn, expertly plotted, The Dreaming Jewels is a Sturgeon masterpiece.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Life Is But A Dream.......2006-12-17

"The Dreaming Jewels" by Theodore Sturgeon is an interesting science-fiction novel which was first published in February of 1950 in "Fantastic Adventures". This was Sturgeon's first novel. It was nominated in 2001 for the Retro-Hugo award for novellas which were written in the year 1950. I am not sure why they re-categorized the story as a novella, as it is clearly of novel length. Unlike many stories from that era, this one does not suffer at all from age. That is probably due to it focusing not on technological advances, but rather ideas and character.

The story is centered on eight-year old Horton "Horty" Bluett who is sent home from school when he is caught eating ants. His adoptive parents punish him severely, his father, in particular, is so sever that he nearly severs three fingers from Horty's left hand. Horty also is very attached to a toy which he had from the orphanage. His attachment was so great that he nearly died when it was taken away. Horty runs away from home, and ends up meeting Havana, Bunny, and Zena who take him back to the Carnival where they work.

The early part of this story reads more like a fantasy or horror story than a science-fiction one, and indeed those who want hard science-fiction would do better of looking elsewhere. However, Sturgeon does an artful job of bringing the story back into the realm of science-fiction as it moves towards its conclusion. Sturgeon includes many interesting themes, such as communication, outcasts, and alien life forms, and creates a story which is largely unique.

4 out of 5 stars Where is my Brother?.......2005-11-24

It's easy reading. Almost childlike. But the story is good. A very original concept. It's not a new book. And although the author is fairly well known, it's not a classic. There won't be a test (as far as I know, this book won't be a topic of conversation at a faculty luncheon). Still, I remember it fondly.

A boy, Horty, has problems with his parents. Horty gets caught "eating ants" (he's a geek). So, he runs away to join the circus. He takes his childhood toy with him: A jack in the box. "Jack" has only one eye, a glittering jewel. But Horty is in danger: The circus owner collects jewels. Why? The answer to that forms the foundation of the story (the jewels "dream").

I didn't analyse the story at the time. The cosmology suggested: Our parents are crystals?

This "myth" (along the line of Romulus and Remus) provides an icon (the twins) whose symbolic interpretation helps resolve the question (I assert) "Who is the king's father?".

This question is as puzzling, in its own way, as the question "Who created god". And although, if I remember correctly, Horty comes to terms with his own problems; still, I'm not sure if Theodore Sturgeon presents us with a king at the end of the story. He probably fails to establish a new icon. And, he surely fails to establish a new Greco Roman civilization. Too bad.

In the end, the story remains "just" a good story. Borrow it from the library or pick it up used.

        5 out of 5 stars I love this book........2004-10-31

This was my second Sturgeon novel, my first was More Than Human. I read my dads copy, which was under the 1975 name The Synthetic Man. This book, although it doesn't have the same meaning to it as More Than Human, is just as well written. Sturgeons only problem with it was that he was probably under a fairly harsh deadline, judging from how he jumped fairly far into the future, and also didn't give a lot of back story to some of the more interesting characters, such as where the Maneater found some of the freaks in the show. I think if Sturgeon had written this later on in his career, when he had more flexibility, and a bit more experience, this book would have been one of the greatest science fiction novels ever. This is a good opener to his writing, but not at all the best example of his best. His best writing came from his short stories. If you've never read Sturgeon before, starting here is a good spot, if you have and haven't read this book, I'd say read it because it is a good example of what an author can do when they're starting out on the novel trail.

        4 out of 5 stars A moving first novel.......2003-09-15

Sturgeon was always very much a humane writer. This shows in this, his first novel. Even thought it's not listed as a "juvenile," it pretty much comes across as one. The hero is a little boy with abusive step-parents. He even gets his hand maimed. He ends up on the streets, where he joins a carnival with a circus sideshow. Toss in two Jewels from Space, with an intelligence that can't be understood by humans, and now Sturgeon's Dickensesque novel turns into science fiction. Not perfect by any means, but it's always been my favorite Sturgeon novel.

4 out of 5 stars Sturgeon's moving yet imperfect first novel.......2003-08-26

The Dreaming Jewels (also published under the title The Synthetic Man) is the first novel by Theodore Sturgeon, one of science fiction's most legendary writers. Sturgeon had already found success publishing short stories by 1950, but this first novel proved he could sustain longer fictional pieces without losing his vintage magic. The Dreaming Jewels is by no means a perfect novel, but it does showcase Sturgeon's remarkable talent for humanizing his stories and thus focusing his literary microscope on humanity and its proper place in society. Science fiction as a genre can, in general, be criticized for a coldness and overemphasis on science rather than people, but Sturgeon clearly had a special gift for delving into the hearts of his fictional creations.

The main character of the novel is a boy named Horty. Sturgeon delivers a sometimes heartbreaking description of the little fellow's life. Orphaned as a baby, he spent time in an orphanage before being taken in (for all the wrong reasons) by a horrible judge and his weak-willed wife. All he really has in life is an old jack-in-the-box, the eyes of which consist of two remarkable crystals. As the novel opens, Horty has been caught eating ants underneath the school bleachers; here is your first clue that Horty is not your typical kid. His guardians, never kind and caring at the best of times, are furious, and the ensuing dramatic confrontation ends with Horty running away, leaving three severed fingers behind. He sneaks on to a carnival truck and finds himself living happily, disguised as a girl for reasons the novel makes plain, among a host of strange but caring "outsider" type of people. During his stay of several years, his severed fingers grow back and he does not grow at all, further clues that he is not a normal human child. The owner of the carnival is a rather vicious fellow out to destroy humanity with a source of crystal power he researches and experiments with obsessively. Eventually, all of the people Horty has known, both the good and the bad, come together for an inevitable confrontation. Horty can only survive by figuring out exactly who and what he really is.

The relationships between Horty and his carnival friends are really quite touching, and the evil of those who would use or abuse Horty is equally disturbing. Sturgeon can put an incredible amount of emotion into the shortest of sentences, and the reader definitely becomes emotionally involved in the story. One of the problems with The Dreaming Jewels, though, concerns the nature of the important crystals described in the story and the means by which they can provide power to anyone who can truly communicate with them. Some of the mystery is stripped away in the first few pages of the novel, although the small reference I refer to could be overlooked by the casual reader. The fantasy elements, in the end, just come off as slightly absurd. This does nothing to rob the novel of its immense human warmth, but it did have a somewhat negative impact on my reading of the book.

Any woodworker knows that the usefulness of common woodshop tools, both hand and power, is limited to a few basic functions. This is where the use of jigs and shop accessories comes in to create infinite possibilities, shortcuts, and faster or more accurate ways of using common tools to create extraordinary woodworking results. Here are some of America's most clever woodworkers' tips on guiding tools and solutions for common problems found in the woodshop. Included is expert advice on choosing the right materials for jig-making, special-purpose work benches and workbench fixtures, router tables and jigs for joinery and shaping, table-saw jigs for ripping, cross-cutting, joinery and safety, jigs for drill presses, lathes, planers, and chop saws that will show the woodworker how to produce nearly any kind of finished piece imaginable in less time and with greater accuracy. This detailed and well-illustrated book will no doubt become a fixture in many woodshops and will be referred to repeatedly by both hobbyists and professional woodworkers. --Mark A. Hetts

                          5 out of 5 stars Surface Values.......2004-08-16

Finishes & Finishing Techniques is part of Taunton Press' essentials of woodworking series. It is the first of two compilations from Fine Woodworking that cover a wide variety of finishing techniques and styles. This wide spread of material, and the variety of opinions that a collection of articles can present make this a valuable resource for the woodworker, although I think that a good introductory book is still a necessity. Fine Woodworking articles are written for practitioners with a certain amount of experience and confidence, exploring a lot of the variations that are possible. This can be overwhelming for someone who just wants to put a nice finish on that all-important first project.

The structure of the book is straightforward - sections on surface preparation, coloring wood, hand finishing, spray finishing, water-based finishes, and special techniques. I found the special techniques particularly interesting in that it provided an approach to blotch free cherry finishing that has become the basis for most of the finishing I do. There are also some articles on aging, antiquing, and repairs. And even an article on not finishing at all which is a bit eye-opening.

This is all good, well-written material, but don't expect to absorb it in one sitting. When you are contemplating a new project this is one of the best resources for finding solutions and coming up with a new approach rather than the same old rubbing finish.

The book is filled with secrets, tips, tricks and techniques of the all elusive perfect finish.
Even after 35 years in cabinet making I found the chapters well researched and extremely informative.
Did you ever find yourself saying, "Oh yeah... that's how that works!"? You'll say that a few times when reading this one.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful Book.......2002-03-15

I found the book quite comprehensive, including information on how the "pros" do it. I was not interested in obtaining the finish found on most medium-quality furniture (lacquer applied with a hvlp spray gun). I wanted to learn about French polishing, finishing with shellac, dying vs. staining wood - generally, how to create fine hand-rubbed finishes. This book explains how. It also told you where to obtain hard-to-find materials.

1 out of 5 stars Enough Books for the Weekend Refinisher!.......2001-01-01

Aren't there enough finishing books written for the hobbyist? How about a book that shows the hobbyists how they can get professional looking finishes by using professional tools, techniques and materials? Books like this keep the hobbyist at hobbyist levels, never raising the stakes or the standards. The big fault is the publisher, Taunton Press because this publisher is not interested in focusing on the true craft of wood finishing.

If other crafts were treated as immaturely as wood finishing, weekend woodworkers would build nothing more complicated than popsicle stick houses. Only the craft of wood finishing gets this bay treatment approach when it comes to publishing books.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for getting started!!.......2000-10-01

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to get started in woodworking, or is just unsure on proper techniques of finnishing. Finnishing is often thought of as its own hobby by itself, and with the numerous options and approaches to make beautiful furniture, the confusion ends here with this book. Its easy to understand, takes out the guess work, even also covers such tricky problems as dents and holes, and explains how to fool someone's eyes into thinking that there was never such a defect. Recommended for all ages!
