    Book Description

Samuel Richardson's massive seven volume history appeared in 1754, and even Jane Austen could not resist the charms of Sir Charles Grandison. The book is referenced in Northanger Abbey, and Austen herself re-wrote Sir Charles Grandison for an audience of her peers. Now, in the 21st century, The History of Charles Grandison has once again been edited, revised, and modernized. Sir Charles Grandison rescues Miss Harriet Byron from a vile plot. However, he must untangle past intrigues before his history joins his future.

3 out of 5 stars A book with enough lessons to be worthwhile........2005-07-05

Harriet Byron has been one of my favorite literary characters since I read The History of Charles Grandison in college. I enjoy reading these books because the reader is provided insights into human nature that are simply lost on today's readers due to movie going and televison. This is a good version, it is much shorter and it is an easy read. I think more people should become familiar with classic literature.

In today's culture it seems in vogue to disregard tradtional staples and ideas and pursue modern thought, which isn't about modern thought at all. It is all a recycling of ideas, isn't it. Yet people feel locked into to modernity, and no one wants to go to our past and see our building blocks, so to speak.

Sir Charles Grandison is one of those building blocks, IMHO. I don't know that it ever could become a movie or broadway musical, and I know that those are important cultural elements, but the story is important. It is about decency and kindess and taking care of situations in the past without rushing foward into commitments like getting married to someone who expects you to have no past.

A college education is a really valuable tool in today's world, and I think everyone should get one and read the original versions of classic books. Some people simply do not have the opportunity or drive to attend college or university, and they don't have the time or money to pursue a love of classic literature. At that point, I think people should start investing in shorter versions that stay true to the meanings of the classics, and this book is appropriate for the person interested in classic literature but who is indeed too lazy or too uneducated or too without-opportunity to go ahead and read a full version.

Some people suffer from eye-strain, and that is another reason why they might prefer a shorter version of a classic book, but again, I urge people to read classics. You don't know what will speak to you. You don't know what will make you want to change your lifestyle and become a better person.

In a world dominated by psychiatry and hocus-pocus fixer-up ideas, reading books has lost it's thrill. Charles Grandison is a God-fearing man, and one aspect of this story that is never mentioned is that he chooses to STAY with his church and not change over to someone merely for love. I hope I am not ruining the story for anyone. I just think that true love doesn't ask you to become Catholic.

Another part of this story line is respect. Harriet respects her uncle and her grandmother, something that is lacking in today's world, altough prayer in school might make a difference. My kids were respectful until day one of public school, and then it was like I didn't know them. Why? Because they are introduced to books like Harry Potter, not the classics!

I don't know if someone looking for easy humor or bad language would read this book. It takes Thought with a CAPITAL T. I wish girls would read books like this in school, they are more thought provoking than Caddie Woodlawn and books that bore kids, but then they read Lord of the Flies It's all about blood and subconsious sexual acts.

One book I enjoyed, and believed in, was the Scarlet Letter, and I think that people who understood and appreciated that book will understnad this book, even though the lessons are lighter and the storyline doesn't show consquences realistically.

5 out of 5 stars Great, consise version.......2005-06-27

For Jane Austen fans - a must have. This will open up many doors into the mind of Jane Austen. For Samuel Richardson fans - some of the minor characters have been inexplicably renamed, but the storyline is crisper and cleaner, especially in the dragging love-affair that must be resolved in Grandison's history.

Lady G. is at her finest, and the verbal banter is highly entertaining and moves much more quickly than in the longer versions.

My book club is considering ordering this book, but 15.00 is too expensive!

4 out of 5 stars Better for readers than for researchers.......2005-03-05

The History of Sir Charles Grandison is a sweet, old-fashioned romance and "classic hero" story. This version shows emphasises Lady G and banter, and makes Grandison less anguished.

I am assuming anyone who reads this is somewhat familiar with the original. It is a fun, easy read, but to a grad student researching Richardson, I would recommend reading all of the editions.

1 out of 5 stars Frustrating Use of Unappealing Plot Devices.......2004-04-23

Seven years ago, Lady Emma's predicament led her to a desperate decision, to insure a hasty marriage to the smitten Lucas Coulter, the Marquess of Wortham. But on their wedding night, when he discovered she was not the innocent he thought, he abandoned her, and began traveling the world. Lady Emma, who is without funds, supports her and her daughter by breaking into London homes to take jewels from the aristocracy who have wronged her family.

Lucas has now returned from his travels, but only means to stay in London until his business is concluded. Even though he no longer harbors any tender feelings for Emma, Lucas has no intention of seeing his estranged wife. But Emma gains entry into his house, and finds him despite his efforts at avoidance. He finds he still desires her as much, if not more than before. When he catches her in the act of burglary, he strikes a most unorthodox bargain. She must live with him, and give him an heir, or he'll turn her over to the authorities. Since Emma has little choice in the matter, she complies, but their problems are just beginning, because Lucas is unaware of the ugly secret she has told no one.

First of all, this was the first book I've tried by this author, and I didn't even make it halfway through before I gave up on it. Upon reading the back cover, I was intrigued by the fact the heroine steals jewels from the nobles, a unique storyline. But the reason she steals is because her grandfather gambles away the only money they have, so she breaks into the homes of his opponents, and steals back just enough to cover his losses. Perhaps grandfather needs some rehab treatment. Okay, that probably wasn't even heard of then, but it's a weak reason for her theft.

Unfortunately, there were just too many overused and utterly frustrating plot devices used in this story. The whole scenario is based on a misunderstanding, one of my least favorite premises. And in this case, a rather unbelievable one. She was pregnant when they married, and this is what he discovers on their wedding night. When he inquires who fathered the child, she makes a flippant comment of how she doesn't know, because it could be one of many possibilities. She supposedly said this to see if he would really believe that of her, and guess what, he does. So she says nothing more, and he doesn't ask any more questions, and this has gone on for seven years! We find out early on in the book that the baby was conceived out of rape.

Then we have the fact Lucas has a mistress, and even after he sees Emma upon returning to London, he sleeps with his mistress. I don't want to read about the main characters being with anyone else when they're in a relationship with each other. Lucas was just too cold, callus, and spiteful toward Emma as well. In fact, he refers to her by a profane name twice in the few chapters I read. I like it when the main characters have an antagonistic relationship, but not when it verges on cruelty.

In summary, I will try another book by this author, because I believe she possess writing ability. Hopefully, the next story I pick will be more original. Obviously, I don't recommend reading this one.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, Worth Reading, But..........2004-03-05

I can understand why Lucas loved/hated Emma, but to leave the entire country? For seven years? A bit extreme to me. Lucas didn't know he was wrong about Emma simply because he refused to ever speak to her again. Which was unfortunate. Just goes to show that unforgiveness isn't always the wisest course of action. In truth, Emma was a brave, selfless, honorable woman, not to mention very beautiful.
The story was interesting all the way through, but a couple of things bothered me. First, Lucas almost came across as a "mama's boy." Then, when he found out who had attacked Emma, in his thoughts he displayed compassion, understanding, outrage on her behalf, and remorse and guilt for all that he'd put her through. Then he blew it when he said to himself, "____ had had her first." How appalling.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining and readable, but never engaged my emotions.......2001-12-18

Emma, Lady Wortham, is struggling to support her six-year-old daughter and her grandfather, so she's turned to crime: disguised as the Bond Street Burglar, she robs the houses of men who fleece her grandfather at cards. She's risking scandal, and worse, if she gets caught - but then, she's already the subject of scandal. For she is the estranged, cast-off wife of Lucas Coulter, Marquess of Wortham, the wife he discovered was already pregnant when he married her seven years earlier.

And now Lucas is back, and Emma wants a divorce, so she can marry someone else.

But Lucas has never forgiven Emma her betrayal of his love and trust, or the fact that she tried to deceive him and make him father another man's child. So he's not about to give her what she wants, especially not if it means that she will drag his family name through the mud yet again. So he refuses to give her a divorce. However, having seen her again, he is reminded of her beauty, and of the fact that he's never actually taken her to bed. So he offers her a bargain: live with him again and bear him an heir, and then he'll divorce her.

But what Lucas doesn't know is that Emma was actually raped. Her daughter Jenny is the child of her rapist, and Emma herself has never recovered from the trauma and pain of her one experience in men's passion. So, although she steels herself to accept Lucas, when it actually comes to letting him sleep with her, she panics.

To Lucas's credit, he believes her about the rape, and from then on he is kindness itself when it comes to giving Emma time to get accustomed to his touch and to being intimate with him. Dawson handles this aspect of the book very well; contrary to the other reviewer's comment, I didn't find the sensual element of the book at all frustrating. Emma is getting over being raped violently; of course she's not going to throw herself into lovemaking with Lucas in an abandoned manner the first time they're together!

I don't know what it was about the book which left me with a lukewarm response; I just know that, well-researched and -written though it is, this book didn't engage me in the way a story by Balogh or Beverley or Putney or a couple of other writers do. However, this book is certainly a good read, and I'll keep an eye out for others by this writer.

                    3 out of 5 stars Once upon a scandal..........2000-04-24

... a beautiful lady and her handsome lord learn that true love conquers all.

Well, that's the premise of the story.

Emma, Lady Wortham, the exiled wife of the Marquess of Wortham, goes to see her newly returned husband to ask for a divorce. She wants to end their farce of a marriage in order to give her daughter a father who will love her. The Marquess, Lucas Coulter, has his own reasons for wanting the marriage to continue, at least for awhile. Number one on that list is the all-important heir. And Lucas intends to make sure that Emma provides him with one.

ONCE UPON A SCANDAL is an entertaining book. The characters are well-drawn, and the plot moves quickly. But this book could have been improved. Lucas and Emma's relationship seems to be a series of building up to a sex scene, then breaking it off, and building back up again. Although the reason behind the break-offs and retreats is very understandable and believable, the constant cycles of up and down left me feeling like I was on a roller coaster (and getting off a roller coaster is *not* a pleasant feeling for me).

I also found it distasteful that Ms. Smith made the law officer in this book such a repulsive toad. Emma had been stealing jewels to support her family. Granted that she was in need, but because of the utter repulsiveness with which the Bow Street Runner was presented, Smith made it seem like the law shouldn't even have been questioning Emma's second-story work. It would have been much more interesting to see the Runner as someone who was simply doing his job, and then finding that maybe Emma's was a case that shouldn't be prosecuted.

ONCE UPON A SCANDAL is good, but it could have been better.

4 out of 5 stars This story is a fantastic page turner!.......1998-06-23

You get amazing twists and turns from the characters of this book. You feel as if you are standing on the sidelines watching the entire story unfold. I got attached to the characters because Barbara Dawson Smith gives a uniqueness to her characters which is a welcome change from the ordinary. I am going on my 3rd book written by B D Smith and can't decide which one to read first!

                        Book Description

This is an account of the Madhyamika (Middle Way) school of Buddhism, a method of mediation and enlightenment that was developed by the great Indian teacher Nagarjuna. In a collaboration between the Frenchwoman Alexandra David-Neel and her friend, the Tibetan lama Aphur Yongden, these teaching are presented clearly and elegantly, intended for the layman who seeks a way to practice and experience the realization of oneness with all existence.

Alexandra David-Neel was born in 1868 in Paris. In her youth she wrote an incendiary anarchist treatise and was an acclaimed opera singer; then she decided to devote her life to exploration and the study of world religions, including Buddhist philosophy. She traveled extensively to in Central Asia and the Far East, where she learned a number of Asian languages, including Tibetan. In 1914, she met Lama Yongden, who became her adopted son, teacher, and companion. In 1923, at the age of fifty-five, she disguised herself as a pilgrim and journeyed to Tibet, where she was the first European woman to enter Lhasa, which was closed to foreigners at the time. In her late seventies, she settled in the south of France, where she lived until her death at 101 in 1969.

"Yet, despite the occultist flavor of its title, "The Secret Oral Traditions in Tibetan Buddhist Sects", is the most direct, no-nonsence, and down-to-earth explanation of Mahayana Buddhism which has thus far been written. Specifically, it is a wonderfully lucid account of the Madhyamika (or "middle-way") School of Buddhism, a method of meditation and enlightenment which was worked out sometime between 150 and 250 A.D. by the great Indian sage and pandit Nagarjuna." [from the forward by Alan Watts]

                        3 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2000-10-07

In order to understand this book you must have some knowledge on Buddhism or else you will be completely lost. The book has many eye opening thoughts that will make you say, "Wow, that is so true about society." I think it was a great book and recommend it to anyone who wants to understand a little more to what they already know. This is a great mind-opening book that will make you think twice about all those beliefs you've been taught, for example religious.

A great quote from the book "Doubt is an incitement to research, and research is the path to true knowledge."

Paraphrase between A David-Neel and her teacher as reported in the book (Note similarities to dialog of Don Juan and Carlos): "Why are these teachings secret? Does that mean I can't write and tell about them?" "No, Alexandra, these teachings are not called 'secret' because it is forbidden to talk about them. They are 'secret' because so few who hear them understand."

3 out of 5 stars An old primer........1999-04-12

This was probably a nice little introductory book for those unacquainted with Buddhism, Tibetan or otherwise, thirty years ago, but there are much better primers available now. Its claim that these are somehow "secret oral teachings" was not true even back then, and I doubt anyone in Tibet would have thought these teachings secret at any time in their history. Indeed, these are largely introductory teachings on the abhidharma and other Intermediate Scope topics that have been a common foundation for all schools of Buddhism for 2500 years. A few peculiarly Tibetan notions are thrown in at the end, but nothing "secret" as far as I can tell. You will do well to look elsewhere for your Buddhadharma.

I am noticing the similarity of present day quantum physics and some old world theories. I loved what Alan Watts had to say. I found this French philosopher/traveler's stories to be fascinating! Wish I could have traveled with her.
