Book Description
At fifteen, Faith Duckle was lured under the bleachers by a bunch of boys and brutally attacked. Now, almost a year later, a newly thin Faith is haunted by her past and by the flippant, cruel ghost of her formerly fat self who is bent on revenge.
Faith eventually turns to violence for retribution, forcing her to flee home in search of the only friend she has -- a troubled but caring busboy who is the lover of a sideshow performer -- and to tumble into the colorful, transient world of the circus. But as she dives headfirst into a world of adult passions and dreams, mercurial allegiances, and exhilarating self-discovery, Faith must also face some disturbing truths about herself and the world around her.

oh what could've been..........2006-04-27
i went to a memorial service for amanda davis shortly after her death in san francisco at the bookstore she was scheduled to give a reading. i was overwhelmed by the standing room only crowd that turned out for her. i actually met some of her relatives and told them that she was certainly an amazing woman, not just a writer, which they happily concurred. i read this book a few months later. she had talent, definately. as a girl power novel, davis hits it out the park, though anyone who has ever felt out of the loop can relate to it. circus stories are always fun and she makes the main character's odyssey's at the circus a hoot. i love the fat girl alter ego character, who sticks around to keep her in check when she gets haughty. mcsweeny's magazine put up a blog in her memory, and were are pages and pages of tributes to her...i was told her novel was better than her short story collection " circling the drain," but i'll read it anyway, just to check out the development of her stunning singular talent...
Simply amazing..........2006-04-05
I picked up this book because I was bored. However, it turned out to be one of the most amazing books I have ever read. Amanda Davis weaves an intricate and unique world. She develops the main character brilliantly and shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Terribly sad beginning.......2006-04-02
This is a book that begins with the revelation of a horrible event in a young girl's life. The details unfold as the novel progresses, and the reader is able to feel the pain and to understand the fragmentation of her personality to include "the fat girl." Joining the circus is an effort to belong somewhere after commiting an act of violence herself. This book has several levels, but it does come together at the end when the adolescent "coming of age" evolves and the dual personality is merged. I did have a little trouble keeping all the circus characters straight once they began to interact with "Annabelle." This is a book that would do well in sequel form. I am interested in finding out how Faith's life continues to evolve.
Good book.......2006-01-05
It took me a chapter or two to really get into this book because it's so disjointed at the beginning, really jumping from one scene to another, back and forth in time. But the author's writing is absolutely wonderful and just compelled me to continue reading. She seriously has a way with words that make you want to eat up every last drop of this book.
It is interesting to read about behind-the-scenes carnival life, but this is one of those books that is more idea driven than concrete-plot driven. Faith Duckle was raped a year ago, then tried to commit suicide and was in a home to help her, and has now decided to run away from her life and join up with the circus. She learns about other people who make up the world, coming into strange situations with some of them, and also learns about herself and what she wants out of life. The story is definitely a dark coming-of-age type, but it was excellent to devour.
I'm not sure about rereading this book simply because it is so heavy but there were parts I thoroughly enjoyed and will take some time to think about. I'd recommend this to you if you're looking for a dark, well-written book about a girl growing up.
Disturbing, yet compelling. You'll never look at carnies the same way again........2005-12-30
I read this book almost two years ago, and it still haunts me. But it doesn't haunt me in a good way, and I didn't especially enjoy the book when I read it. The sleazy behind-the-scenes world of the circus was creepy to me, and that's the part that is so unforgettable about the book. I was never a fan of carnivals to begin with, but I seriously haven't been able to go to one since without looking at the carnies in a totally different way.
There were some gems in this story, especially the themes about the young girl's choices, the issue of following one's dream, etc. Another good part was that I didn't get bored at all by reading it - the story itself was compelling enough that it propelled me forward despite myself. And I gave it three stars even though I really didn't enjoy reading it, because it was at least written well enough to really make me feel something. And that's better than 90 percent of the other writing out there today. But nonetheless, it was still a disturbing story to me and not a fun read at all.

what a stinker.......2004-03-04
This book was awful, simply awful. I like Diana Palmer, as a rule; in fact that's why I bought the book, to read about The Founding Father of Jacobsville. I wish I hadn't bothered. The wording was clunky and uninspiring, and even the other two stories by different authers weren't that great. My recomendation--don't waste your time. Choose something else.
A Hero's Kiss.......2004-01-08
Pleasant stories and a fun read, but not dynamic. I will donate this book to the library.
Yawn!!!.......2003-12-09
In Diana Palmers story The Founding Father I made myself finish it. There was no passion (very dull and ugly people).Diana's stories are usually about 2 people who can't keep there hands off one another. These barely kissed, he thought she was plain and did'nt change his mind through out the story. Big John never once came close to losing control, even after they married it was weeks before he touched her, then end of story. If this is going to be Diana's new style of writing I'll pass on buying anymore of her books. So if your expecting hot steamy romance I would pass on this book.
three intriguing western romances.......2003-11-27
"The Founding Father" by Diana Palmer. Former Georgian farmer turned Texas rancher Big John Jacobs hopes to persuade New York tycoon Terrance Colby to swing a rail past his spread to expedite the moving of cattle. John offers a business marriage to Terrance's unmarriageable daughter Camilla Ellen. He would receive access to her father while she would gain her freedom, but neither expected love to emerge. This is a solid Tall Texan tale starring an honest hero showcased in an intelligent story line though one must question the change in Camilla from rug rat to heroine.
"Wild West Wager" by Judith Stacy. In 1888 Colorado, saloon owner Jack Delaney does the unthinkable when he becomes the first male to enter the Marlow Tea Room. Jack hires the tearoom co-owner Rebecca Merriweather to decorate his new house so that his eastern company will feel at home. Though she thinks he is bringing his fiancé west, they fall in love. This is a fine lighthearted western romance.
"Snow Maiden" by Mary Burton. In Colorado, business mogul Adam Richmond wants the construction of the new organ to fail because that will badly reflect on the new minister, who he wants to keep away from his sister. He offers the builder Russian emigrant Sophia Petrovnova money to leave town, but she refuses though the cash would enable her to go home. Sophia loves Adam, but knows his heart is colder than her homeland's winters though she had hoped to melt it. Fans will enjoy this warm yet simplistic tale of redemption.
All three intriguing western romances bring to life the late nineteenth century through strong lead couples and fine support cast.

Simply Adorable.......2006-10-09
Great story...the characters are anything but weak in this one. Abby is very independent, she knows what she wants with Cade, and acts very sexy about it. Cade is very masculine and tough, yet he is very romantic and passionate at the end of the story. Enough sensuality, not too many characters, and an ending that provides closure. Absolutely wonderful!
W...O....W!.......1999-10-24
I just finished Snow Kisses and once again Diana Palmer does not disappoint. This book is FULL of great emotion. It is what romance writing is supposed to be.
A sweet story..........1999-03-26
This is such a lovely little book. Though there're no stunning plot twists or desperate revelations, it manages to be poignant and even amusing. I think it is one of Diana Palmer's better efforts, with more depth to the characters than the average blonde-ingenue-and-brooding-rancher novella... "Snow Kisses" is one of those books I dig out every few months for a good re-read, and I love it every time as much as the first.

The magical experiences of a cold and snowy winter's day are woven together with rhyming text and captured in vibrant illustrations. Children bundle into snowsuits and race outside into a sparkling world of white to build houses of snow bricks, catch snowflakes on their tongues, and make snow angels. Almost as much fun as playing in the snow is coming back indoors to toast toes in front of the fire and share a story before snuggling in bed. As cozy as soft flannel sheets, here is a joyful celebration of childhood - and of the perfect snowy day.

Sweet as can be.......2007-08-27
We found this book at our library and had to get our own copy, and then we had to buy its companion book, Marshmallow Kisses. Both evoke the delights of the seasons with sweet, simple but specific and unusual text and gorgeous, heavily detailed, folk art-style illustrations. These books make me want to run away with my family to a cozy, country life with cocoa and quilts, and they've been a big hit with our two-year-old, who loves to follow the little stories-within-the story in the tiny images in the pictures.

A wonderful Christmas book for young and old, this volume rises above the competition with its original story line and well chosen illustrations. Remember: it's not about seeing, it's about believing! Makes a perfect (and unique) Christmas gift as well.
The picturebook story of how the angels sent a beautiful snowfall on the very first Christmas.......2005-12-11
The text of "The Legend Of The Christmas Kiss" by Barbie Jenkins is a poem, beautifully illustrated by the artwork of Joyce Revoir. This is the picturebook story of how the angels sent a beautiful snowfall on the very first Christmas when one little angel wanted to bless the newborn Jesus with the gift of her kiss. But something special happened to her kiss after passing through the clouds below. It became a glistening speck, drifting down and landing on the Christ child's cheek. Then a multitude of angels added their kisses to hers, and the earth is covered in a true winter wonderland. "The Legend Of The Christmas Kiss" is a unique and welcome addition to the growing library of Christmas theme picturebooks. for young children and their parents.

This "new" Roger Zelazny work was finished posthumously with the help of his coauthor and friend, Jane Lindskold. Unlike some after-the-fact "collaborations," this one has Zelazny written all over it. It's a typical tale from one of science fiction's greats, a world-spanning story that deals heavily with mythology and the ability to cross between two realities. In this case the realities are the real world, Verité, and the virtual world, Virtù. When Donnerjack--one of the architects of Virtù--loses his lover Ayradyss, he makes a pact with Death to return her from the dead. In return, Death demands their first-born child, who will be the first baby born from a Verité/Virtù union, and a force to be reckoned with in both worlds.
Book Description
In our world, called the Verite, he is a Scottish laird, an engineer, and a master of virtual reality design. In the computer-generated universe of Virtu, created by the crash of the World Net, he is a living legend. Scientist and poet with a warrior's soul, Donnerjack strides like a giant across the virtual landscape he helped to shape. And now he has bargained with Death himself for the return of love.
The Lord of Entropy claimed Ayradyss, Donnerjack's beloved dark-haired lady of Virtu, with no warning, leaving a hole in the Engineer's heart. But Death offered to return her to him for a price: a palace of bones...and their first-born child. Since offspring have never before resulted from any union of the two worlds, Donnerjack accepts Death's conditions--and leads his reborn lover far from the detritus and perpetual twilight of Deep Fields to his ancestral Scottish lands, hoping to build a sanctuary and a self for Ayradyss in the first world.
But there is no escaping, because cataclysmic change is taking place in Virtu. A bizarre new religion is sweeping through this ever-shifting universe where the homely can be virtually beautiful, the lame can walk and the blind can see. Now it's threatening to spill over into Verite. And its credo is a call for a different kind of order. For all the ancient myths still occupy Virtu. And the Great Gods on Mt. Meru are amassing great armies in anticipation of the time when a vast computer system attempts to take over the reality that constructed it.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This is a book that is dealing with the mythology of death, involving virtual reality. Here, people are able to communicate between these two realms, but not travel freely. So, the protagonists are looking at a way to get around this, and to cheat Death, unfortunately involving their child.
donnerjack.......2006-02-24
i have to admit, i thought that zelazny would be better, after reading lord demon and the great book of amber i was a bit dissapointed, however it was creative and imaginative, if you all want to know how the real matrix started and include a bit of romantic fantasy- well here you are.
Reading Donnerjack Makes You Cry A Little, You Know.......2005-10-11
Reviews before me have noted the obvious correlation between the end of the first third of this book and the death of the author. Others have argued with such statements, and offered grand compliments to the entirety of Donnerjack.
Allow me to underline the sentiments of the first and blink oddly at the latter in honest confusion.
The first third of Donnerjack is a work of art. Not only to fans of Zelazny, which I do not really count myself as. Not only to science-fiction fans, or fantasy fans. It is a true mythological tale which is so rarely seen in any genre. Death seems to spring from the page. John D'Arcy is seared into our minds. Virtu itself seems to spring up around us.
It's astounding. It is one the better books in this decade.
And then, as you go along, your mouth gaping with unshamed awe, the author dies.
And so does the grand story, its porportions, its characters, and its quiet grace.
It is replaced with something that at times seemed to be a childrens' book, a bodice-ripper, and a book based on a D&D session.
I tried to go on. I honestly did. Having devoured the first part in a day, I continued slogging on for literally weeks. I dismissed obvious inconsistencies. I skimmed over plot holes. I even laughingly skipped over the multiple, multiple, multiple times the characters acted with simple childish /idiocy/.
And then I stopped, somewhere fifty pages from the end. Because I could not bear to go on. Donnerjack had died, a hundred and fifty pages ago. What was left wasn't worth the torture.
Donnerjack is amazing. It is an astounding story, astoundingly written, striking somewhere deep within the collective unconcious. But it only runs for 186 pages before it turns into something debasing and crude, and something inside you breaks at that loss.
I've never written a amazon.com review before, and I doubt I will again. But I had to write this one.
Donnerjack is amazing. Don't ever read it. You'll cry a little.
Good for the first half, but fizzles........2003-03-31
I agree wholeheartedly with the review here by Phil Thwing. Essentially, the book starts out in classic Zelaznyish fashion but suddenly shifts over to something else about half way through. Very disappointing. The first half is full of depth and then the second half turns shallow. About the only good thing you can say about the ending is that it seems to tie up all the threads. But, there's no satisfaction to it. I wish people would stop trying top publish a dead man's unfinished works. It just degrades his real legacy.
I liked it........2002-11-01
...I like long books, so its length did not trouble me. The voice of two people haunted by death are clear to hear in the pages, I had no quarrel with its emotional authenticity. I liked the combination of science fiction and myth and the humor exposed in many of the characters.
If I quarreled with it, I quarreled with some of the more dream-like sections-- things went by too fast, or were explained too little. There was too thin of a line between fascination and irritation in that respect.
Most of the time I am not a fan of posthumous completions. And I was very wary of somebody "finishing" work by Zelazny. I was pleasantly surprised. Recommended.

Presents a variety of Buddhist methods for subduing and preventing anger, not by changing what is happening, but by framing it differently.
Customer Reviews:
Read It Over and Over.......2005-07-20
I have not only highlighted the daylights out of this book, I'm starting on my fourth time reading it. It has helped me deeply realize that anger in me is like acid in a styrofoam cup - it destroys the container. Thubten Chodron has a gift for translating the Buddhist teachings and philosophies into plain language that anyone can understand and apply.
This is the kind of book that I keep 2 or 3 copies on hand to give to friends, relatives and co-workers. It's a wonderful way to help people in conflict without being preachy.
I hope I get to meet Thubten Chodron one day so I can thank her for blessing us with this book.
Childproofing your exposed buttons.......2004-12-30
American Buddhist nun Chodron has in this work produced a detailed and concise handbook which could be used practically by Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Of greed, hate and delusion representing the three roots of suffering, anger is the most easily seen with prominence in the sphere of relationships to other people. It is at this level that the book applies in our interactions with kin, associates and adversaries and how to change tensions into harmony. The presentation in part echoes "How to win friends and influence people" by D. Carnegie, though its tone is more esoteric and not one to help improve ones' charisma.
The narrative hits home its points e.g. in defending itself against the charge that anger could actually be beneficial by devices including a disarming logic and everyday examples both hypothetical and real. In the former, the personal third person pronoun (like in many modern books) switches easily though unpredictably between genders. It also draws on traditional texts and advice from meditation masters as well as Chodron's quietly forthright style.
About 18 chapters summarise all the facets of anger manifestation including how it applies to oneself. A strength of the book is how it fashions modern ways of thinking and concepts to make aspects of the teaching relevant e.g. "When Our Buttons Are Pushed" or "Conflict Styles". The book thus combines modern psychological approaches to understanding and dealing with stress with ancient wisdom. Topics include defining anger, patience, recognising anger, criticism and blame, dealing with enemies, envy, love and compassion and developing wisdom. The book contains two summarising appendices to clarify the lessons it teaches with a glossary and reading list.
This book will be particularly useful in penal institutes to help offenders and the probation service in "anger management courses" and wherever such lessons could apply from schools to Customer Service. Readers who think they do not need such a guide may in fact discover reservoirs of resentment within themselves after reading it. As an interesting digest it could be equally translated to help deal with alternative problems such as manifestations of greed. This is very much a book that points the way without detailed analysis of mind and liberation with some challenging wisdom. It points to the interconnectedness of all beings and the futility of anger, not least under conditions of "cyclic existence".
Excellent Observations, Useful Techniques.......2004-12-08
This is a wonderful book. I've been working on my anger for some time and reading this book gives me confidence and methods to complete this important project. She provides numerous techniques, advice, and comments to approach this problem in a helpful, gentle, and multifaceted way. Firstly, we must recognize the existence of the anger and allow it to settle:
p. 22: "Psychologists speak of a refractory period that accompanies an emotion. During this time, we are closed to any advice or reasonable interpretation that contradicts our view...When the emotion subsides and we are able to look at the event more clearly, we readily see...that anger's interpretation was inaccurate...when we are angry we are, in fact, viewing it through a filter of our self-centeredness."
The author makes the important connection between our anger and our self-centeredness-our attachment to our ego. Furthermore, she observes that we view others as similar to ourselves:
p. 71: "When our mind is well accustomed to find faults with others, we incorrectly assume they will do the same with us. Here we have two useless habits to counteract: the first is judging others, and the second is assuming others are judging us."
On page 83, she points out that even if we are "right" it doesn't make us happy, but that acceptance of the reality of life helps us to make the most of our lives-not surrendering to it:
p. 88: "Acceptance simply means fully accepting that what is happening now is indeed happening, even if we do not like what it is. We stop fighting the reality of the present moment and let go of our anger. Nevertheless, we still aspire and work towards improving the situation in the future. In fact, acceptance of the present enables us to think more clearly about effective means for influencing what occurs in the future." And, "If we face an unpleasant situation and can change it, why get angry? ...On the other hand, if we cannot alter the situation, why get angry?"
She explores different kinds or scenarios of anger situations with numerous examples and makes some less than obvious observations:
p. 89: "Interestingly, in most conflict situations, both parties feel that the other is more powerful...Because we are interdependent, everyone in a situation affects the others. However, we are seldom aware that the person we consider powerful is also dependent on others and may at times feel helpless as well."
She also provides some less than obvious solutions or antidotes to our anger:
p. 96: "We can take any pain we experience and give it to the selfish attitude."
Ven. Chodron also states what I have been waiting to hear for a long time from the many Vajrayana texts I have read that"
p. 126: "In wishing all beings to be happy and free from suffering, we must include ourselves. Doing so is appropriately loving ourselves and having compassion for ourselves. No sentient being is more or less deserving than any other in this respect." And,
p. 128: Someone once said, `If we treated others the way we treat ourselves, we wouldn't have any friends.'
She also addresses how to help other people immersed in their anger:
p. 147: [if you ask someone undergoing anger] "What could someone say that would help you at this moment?" [it helps them "to consider new alternatives]. "What could someone have said to you back then that would have helped you?" [it helps them "to look at the situation more creatively"].
And finally, the strange truth about our anger (per Jung's view that what we project outside of us is often opposite to what is outside), touching off our true compassion & Bodhichitta:
p. 149: "How many of us get angry when we are really trying to say `please love me'? And how many of us miss others' pleas for kindness because we react to their outer hostility?"
precious.......2003-10-21
This book is precious. It has and is still helping me deal with anger in all it's forms even though I thoughtI wasn't an angry person.Bonus is that it is written in a very uncomplicated language. I'm very grateful to this book.I'm buying 3 more copies for my friends.Enjoy!
Anger No More.......2002-01-09
This was an AWESOME book. Thubten Chodron knows what it's like to be in the shoes of an American living in the millennium. And more! She gives wise, yet practical, perspectives in how our perception is what stands in our way 100% of the time. Of the many choices we have in reacting to any given situation, anger is but only one, and Thubten clearly illustrates how it only serves to pave a destructive path for ourselves and others. I initially bought this book in the hopes of finding a few answers for personal situations, and I found myself feeling transformed within the first 30-40 pages! For those who are naturally introspective, some of this book will serve as an effective reminder for what you already know. Most of it, however, will offer a refreshing new view to take with you as you approach your day. One does not need to be religious to benefit from this book, and you don't need to spend a chunk of your day in a meditational state to make use of it. A definite must for those who want to evolve in a difficult world.

Book Description
Client anger is a perennial problem for a range of professionals working in clinical settings.
Working with Anger presents an alternative strategy to the most common approach, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), exploring instead how anger can be tackled from a personal constructivist perspective. It provides a conceptual framework and practical advice on the clinical issues of working with anger, including case study examples, service user perspective, a philosophical and developmental underpinning, and suggested ways of preventing anger development. Ways of working with anger are illustrated, including:
- Group-based treatments
- Individual treatment
- Working with adults
- Working with children and adolescents
- Working with families
- Gender and anger
- Methods of evaluating anger programmes
This practical volume will enable clinicians to set up, run and evaluate their own anger programmes using the constructivist approach. It will therefore be a valuable resource for professionals such as clinical and forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, nurses and social workers.
