To Cut a Long Story Short reads like a series of modern fairy tales. In each story, Jeffrey Archer presents a moral problem, and a character finds himself tested in a dark hour. Evil manifests itself in the form of selfish relatives, corrupt cops, racist men. Good arrives in the form of unselfish minor characters who suddenly emerge as the real center of the story, or lost souls who come out the other side of corruption and renounce their old ways.

In "The Endgame" Cornelius Barrington decides to fake a bankruptcy. As one of the richest men in his small town, he hopes his sudden plunge into poverty will reveal the true character of his friends and relatives. He calls in debts, asks to borrow money from those he has lent to in the past, only to be turned away time and again.

After lunch Cornelius took a bus into town--a novel experience. It was some time before he located a bus stop, and then he discovered that the conductor didn't have change for a twenty pound note. His first call after he had been dropped off in the town centre was to the local estate agent, who didn't seem surprised to see him. Cornelius was delighted to find how quickly the rumour of his financial demise must be spreading.
"The Endgame" is a complex tale with a clear message. Not all the stories in To Cut a Long Story Short attempt such weightiness. "The Expert Witness" is a delightful parody of the legal system, a portrait of two pub mates--a lawyer and an expert witness--who often find themselves facing off in the courtroom, pretending not to know each other. Certain pieces (glimpses, vignettes) last a mere two pages, but whatever the length or weight of the story, throughout this collection Archer has a light touch, a quick wit, and a thorough understanding of the mechanics of suspense. --Emily White

Book Description

From the master storyteller comes a masterful collection of fourteen riveting tales of elaborate confidence tricks, political chicanery, immoral behavior, and dangerously illicit affairs, rendered with the breathtaking narrative twists that have become the Jeffrey Archer hallmark.

Here are all new stories that will engross and astonish, peopled with a rich assortment of truly memorable characters: the intoxicating woman who appears to her lover only once every six years; the British diplomat who employs his rather creative -- if not entirely ethical -- financial talents for a greater good; the millionaire who declares himself bankrupt to test the love and loyalties of those closest to him.

This is Jeffrey Archer at the top of his form, as he offers us unique fables of our time and civilization, each one shining a harsh yet hypnotic light on that fascinating, complex being called "human."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Very entertaining, but some predictable endings.......2006-12-18

Although not as good as Jeffery Archer's first collection (A Quiver Full of Arrows), most of the stories are highly entertaining, with clever plots and characters. What's not so clever are the endings, which in some cases can be spotted four or five paragraphs into a story. While in several stories, Archer writes at the same excellent level that he managed in "First Among Equals" (which he alludes to in one of the longer stories), the value of the book would have been enhanced if at least three other tales were just left out.

5 out of 5 stars A Short Story! - A Long Night!.......2006-04-11

I have been a fan of short stories for a while. Mainly because they are digestible and accomplishable in a short sitting. These stories are very well written. Just when you adapt to a storyline, something changes and you stumble down another path. You do physically smirk to yourself at the outcome of a story and I find this work by Jeffrey Archer very enjoyable, though I have yet to read more of his books. There's one slight glitch, If I sometimes settle in for a short story at night, it ends up a long night. It's just hard to ignore the next chapter heading winking at me, saying "read more". I do recommend this book, especially for busy people who don't have time to get through a novel.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2005-08-22

Although mercifully brisk and tightly written, the stories in "To Cut a Long Story Short" pivot shamelessly on the dustiest of mystery-genre cliches. One or two tickled my senses, but the balance triggered alarm bells of disappointment and regret.

5 out of 5 stars Clever & cunning writer and characters........2004-12-01

The cliche "master storyteller" is appropo for Jeffrey Archer in this incredible collection of short stories, but perhaps not sufficient. After I had read a couple of the stories and been entranced and stunned by them, I couldn't help but try to figure out where the remaining stories were going as I read them. There's always a twist, a surprise, an "Ooohh, alright."
I'm not a short-story fan but I am definitely a Jeffrey Archer short-story fanatic.

3 out of 5 stars just another book from Archer - he must be rich.......2004-11-22

Long time back when I started reading Archer and read his short story compilations like "Quiver Full of Arrows" I thought this guy has the caliber to reach the standards of Graham Greene but alas 15 years from that time here we are with a very very mediocre writer like so many hundreds of other writers.

There are 15 stories and only 2 are really worth my time. These 2 stories are "Death Speaks" and "Chalk and Cheese". Many of these stories are images of real incidents - my question to Archer is then why does he try to create a twist in the end? Real life incidents most of the time do not have a twist in the end. As a result what we get is extremely mundane and prosaic stories of no significance.

Death Speaks is a gem of a story - it is short (brevity is the soul of this story) and you will keep on thinking about this for ever. Chalk and Cheese is also a quite interesting story about 2 brothers going through the realms of success and failure.

The question will be why did I give it 3 stars and not 2 or 1 well it is better than many other books I read and if you take the twist out of the stories then its readable. I will recommend try Roald Dahl and then try reading this book.

Book Description

In this autobiography Tony Hadley, lead singer of 80s band Spandau Ballet and winner of the ITV1 series Reborn in the USA will reveal the highs and lows of his twenty year career in music. At the height of New Romantic fever classic songs such as 'True', 'Through the Barricades' and 'Gold' earned Tony Hadley, with his good looks and stage presence, a legion of teenage fans around the world. With his unique vocals, Tony appeared to have it all-on the surface at least-and then he lost it. His autobiography will be a great slice of 80s nostalgia.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2006-01-22

As a child of the 80's i had wondered what happened to Tony. He has the most amazing voice! This is a great book. It shows their struggles, fame and then greed of certain band members that almost got Tony but looks like he is prevailing....by the way Gary who? Looks like Tony is rising above it all.

5 out of 5 stars Tony's story is truly one of highs and major lows.......2004-05-27

Tony Hadley's autobiography is a excellent read for any Spandau Ballet fan. During the new romantic era of the 80's, Tony reached stardom as frontman for Spandau Ballet with his distinctive voice and adoring fans. But as the 80's were coming to a close so were Spandau Ballet. I was quite interested to see how Tony and guitar player Gary Kemp's friendship tunred sour and eventually landed in court over royalties. This book tells the story of how Tony had it all then lost it all.

I was almost disillusioned to read how relentless Gary Kemp was in not only to stop paying royalites on Spandau Ballet's material, but to keep his former bandmates, Tony, John Keeble, and Steve Norman at bay not even allowing them to use the words "ex-Spandau Ballet" members during their tours. It was this conflict with Gary Kemp that caused Tony's downward spiral.

But the book goes through the many highs and lows of Tony's life both in Spandau Ballet and in personal life, which kind of serves as a lesson for all of us. After reading this book, you will see that no matter what gets in your way of succees, or people that want to bring you down, or even if you make mistakes, don't ever give up on your dreams. Life is an adventure, take it day by day; that's Tony's philosopohy. I'm sure for all you diehard Spandau Ballet fans hoping to see a reunion sometime in the future, after reading this book, you will see that it will likely never happen.

                  Book Description

Henry Ashton, the Marquess of Mandeville, knows precisely what he needs in a wife: a docile, conventional female from a wealthy, powerful family to further his political aspirations. Certainly a gentleman of his stature can take his pick, so why is he so irresistibly drawn to Lucy Abbington, the most remarkably unconventional woman he's ever met? Her wish to become—of all things—a veterinarian, not to mention her outspoken nature and lack of connections, make her most unsuitable for his courtship, though deliciously suitable for his bed. Their attraction is unleashed in a kiss that promises temptation…and trouble.

In spite of her boredom with the ton and its fripperies, Lucy is a smashing success in her first Season—receiving cards and bouquets, invitations to dance and even to marry. A fight breaks out over her at the opera, she nearly loses her virtue in the back of a carriage…yet the one man she does want offers only dangerous passion. She is determined to resist the arrogant, infuriating Mandeville—but can her lips say `no' while her heart says `yes'?

Kristina Cook is the master of story-telling. I had the privilege of reading this story before it was published, and I loved it even then. Ms. Cook has a way with words that pulls the reader into the story and makes them fall in love with her characters. I highly recommend Henry & Lucy's story for anyone who wants a great read. I also recommend anything this talented author writes.

4 out of 5 stars Regency with spirit.......2006-07-01

I love reading romance, and I discovered these really good priced debut books when they first came out. I wasn't going to write reviews because I'm not a professional, but I have to say, Ms. Cook is good. She's very good. Her plot is a little weak in parts and her hero goes from actively trying to seduce the veterinarian-to-be heroine to treating her like she's "used" goods and it's her fault. It was a bit uneven but very fun to read. Will I be reading her again? Probably.

I only read Unlaced after reading and loving Unveiled--and I'm so glad I've discovered this talented new author! Lucy is one of my all-time favorite romance heroines, and Henry was a perfect match. No cardboard cut-out characters in this book! A fast, fun, sexy, and emotional read. Very highly recommended, and I simply can't wait to read this author's next book!

Written toward the turn of the nineteenth century by Frances Willard, the founder of the WCTU (Women's Christian Temperance Union) and well-known suffragette, A Wheel Within a Wheel offers lively insight into the mind of an independent woman who also reflected the temper of her times. Brave enough to take up bicycle riding when she was fifty-three years old, Willard reported that her bicycling costume "consisted of a skirt and blouse of tweed, with belt, rolling collar, and loose cravat, the skirt three inches from the ground; a round straw hat, and walking-shoes with gaiters. It was a simple, modest suit, to which no person of common sense could take exception."

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Age of the Bicycle.......2006-10-26

In Europe and the United States there was a brief period that roughly spanned the 1890s. During that period, people of all ages began abandoning one troublesome, expensive and polluting form of tranportation, the horse, without adopting the automobile, which was at least as troublesome, expensive and polluting. That was the Golden Age of the Bicycle. If I were given the power to rewrite history, I'd be tempted to delay the invention of the car long enough, perhaps twenty years, to give our cities, our neighborhoods and our societies a chance to establish themselves around the bicycle, before I would allow the automobile to come along.

Unfortunately, I can't do that. But I can recommend books from this golden age to bicycle lovers so they can get a glimpse of what might have been. This book, Wheel Within a Wheel is one. But be sure to check out Around the World on a Bicycle, the story of the first person to circle the world on a bicycle, as well as Across Asia on a Bicycle, which describes the Asian leg of the second circumnavigation of the world by bicycle and the first using the modern 'safety' bike.

The language is tedious and trying - old fashioned and trite. And the topic is boring. Other than that, not a great little book but for some interest in women's issues.

                        5 out of 5 stars A true gem.......2000-02-21

Frances Willard was a hardy, clear-spoken New England Temperance/Suffrage activist of the late 19th century. Until age 16, she had free run of the world, but then was bound by the corsets and hoops and restrictions of womanhood. That is, until she turned 53 and received the gift of "a wheel" -- a safety bicycle -- from a friend in the movement. Her reflections on riding the bicycle are amusing and profound. It was very much a community effort for her; she describes one lesson in which four friends stand at the corners (including one at each side of the handlebars, counterbalancing them) and walk her down the drive. BUT this book is ultimately more about life than it is about cycling. It is like a journal of all the insights sparked by this return to the unfettered freedom of Willard's youth. And for that, it is precious and challenging. The language reminded me of Mark Twain's dry observations on his own habits and predilections, and Willard is certainly his equal in exercising her powers of observation and analysis. Ultimately she reflects a universal experience: the experience of flight on two wheels that attracts so many of us to the sport and discipline of the bicycle.

                        Book Description

New edition: revised and with new introduction by the author! Winner of the inaugural Prometheus Award for Libertarian fiction in 1979.

Canny old Pete Paxton thinks there's a monstrous conspiracy brewing that threatens the LaNague Charter and the freedoms it guarantees for Federation planets. The only way to head it off is to enlist the aid of Josephine "Jo" Finch, the current CEO of Interstellar Business Advisors, a firm Pete co-founded with Jo's grandfather more than half-a-century before. Jo mistrusts Pete and suspects he may beresponsible for the bizarre death of her father that left her orphaned at age ten. But she is soon convinced that the old man's fears are more than justified.

Jo and Pete are soon matching wits with one of the shrewdest, most devious politicos in the Federation, threatened by a ruthless psi-talent whose victims face a fate far worse than mere death. They must also deal with the Vanek - the gentle, enigmatic inhabitants of the planet Jebinose who, against all logic, claim to have murdered Jo's father.

The autobiography of Dervla Murphy's first 30 years was given to my mother in 1981. I picked it up from the bookshelf and read it, inheriting it after my mother's death in 1982. Along with "Jules and Jim" by Henri-Pierre Roche, it has endured as one of my most treasured possessions. Dervla's philosophy of life and her witty, accurate observations are infused always with primitive, glowing truth, and beautifully expressed. I sometimes find myself spontaneously recalling certain phrases from the book when the occasion elicits it. I have been inspired by this book for my whole adult life, and I wish I knew her personally. I really respond to her concept of life. If you're a thoughtful, aware reader you'll probably feel the same way.

                            5 out of 5 stars A truly unusual person!.......2001-12-03

I loved this book. Dervla Murphy had a very unusual childhood, but through it all the burning desire to travel and to write carried her on. She succeded spectacularly in both and her adventures shared with us in books are treasures. This book gives some insight to the circumstances that shaped her life. That she prevailed over such difficult times is a tribute to her spirit. That she found peace and love is a joy.

                            5 out of 5 stars Compelling reading!.......2000-05-20

I loved this book. I got addicted to Dervla Murphy books a few years ago and find her travels around the world fascinating. She is clearly an unconventional person and this book gives the details of her unconventional childhood. She was an only child with a crippled mother. She left school early to help look after her. As a child she loved reading and made her decision to cycle to India from Ireland at a very young age. In this book she is brutally honest, from her childhood daydreams of the teddy bear tree to her alcoholism as an adult. I felt I understood this amazing women better having read this book and I would recommend it to anybody as a great and emotional read.

5 out of 5 stars Deepening my experience of Scripture.......2007-07-14

Rohr's deep exploration of Luke's Gospel is profound, challenging and inspiring, but a large part of the book is him directing the same attention towards Scripture in general: What is it? What is it not? How did it come to be this way? His reasoning and research are an encouraging mixture of more mainstream theology and scholarship mixed with insights into more 'radical' territory such as the place of the Feminine in the Christian story. A very balanced book that is not afraid of tension and paradox in the religious life.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Challenging Reflections.......1998-05-04

Richard Rohr in this book has been able to develop reflections on the Gospel of Luke that are personanally challenging but also consistent with contemporary scholarship. In fact, Rohr is able to use the findings of scholarship as a basis for many of the reflections. Luke presents a Jesus whose message of simplicity and love and faith contradict the world as it was in 80 AD and in 1998. Rohr comes back again and again to Jesus' statements and stories concerning inclusiveness and justice. Rohr reflects on a kingdom that is now. Only our lack of faith keeps it "not yet." The author also has some unique perspectives about some of the stories. In the story of the cure of the centurion's valued servant, Rohr suggests that there is scholarship that maintains an intimate relationship with centurion and servant, which is why the centurion begs Jesus not to enter his house. Unfortunately Rohr only makes the suggestions and does not follow through. He does this in the context of inclusiveness, which is one of the major emnphases of Luke's Gospel. Rohr points out many times that the leadership in Christian denominations would suffer from the stories of Jesus and the parables he told. And yet Rohr does not castigate these authorities. Jesus' challenges are not meant to be divisive. They are invitations to come to the Lord in simplicity and love. Rohr maintains that Luke's main question in this Gospel is "Can God be trusted?" The answer is the resurrection. This is a book that one can come back to many times. The reflections are powerful and require some time to appreciate them.
