Customer Reviews:
A Fairly Comprehensive Look at Sneakers.......2007-08-12
A great look at most of the shoes in each of the major companies respective ranges. While the descriptions and info on the shoes are pretty scant, the pictures more than make up for that. The best part of running through this book is getting hit with the nostalgia that comes with seeing so many products from the not-so-distant past. A nice modern coffee table (or ottoman, I suppose) book. Air Max 1s are the best shoes ever.
A thorough and well presented history........2007-07-04
This book is great to look at even if you're not into sneakers. Beautifully presented design and layout, and great history details. A good oversight of all the significant brands and their best creations.
asset to hiphip culture.......2006-02-17
this book is awesome is very informative, and if you know anything about the hip hop era then this book should be added to a persons collections.
Clean, refreshing visual piece... it is obvious the authors did their sneaker research.......2005-08-26
I own several sneaker books including SOLE PROVIDER and Bobbito Garcia's WHERE'D YOU GET THOSE (both of which I recommend) and I found this book to be a refreshing alternative. Written by the guys behind CROOKED TONGUES (which is a fantastic site by the way), this book is meant for the sneaker collector who appreciates the aesthetic qualities of a shoe, rather than for someone who only buys into the hype and player endorsement. For practically every sneaker that is showcased, at least one clear photo, brief history, and random fact dedicated to each shoe. I also appreciated the effort by the authors to distinguish original editions from reissues. In addition, the sneaker "dictionary" and collecting/cleaning tips sections are great as well.
One word of caution is that I would not recommend the book for those who are only into Air Jordans, or Dunks, or swear by only one sneaker brand. The book contains information for a variety of different models and brands, some which are more obscure. For example, I found myself skipping over some Vans, Reebok, and Diadora models. The authors also have more of preference for vintage running shoes as well. But if you have an open mind and an eclectic taste in sneakers, I recommend owning this book.
Book Description
Under the sticky seats, next to the molten milkshakes, unreturned library books, and petrified french fries is where you'll probably find the hidden microphone. Those Baby Blues cartoonists undoubtedly planted it in your minivan, because how else could they come up with the ideas for their comic strip that mirror exactly what's going on in your life?
Fans and critics have been alternately checking under their seats and raving about the realism of the parenting experience depicted in Baby Blues for years. That realism is no accident (nor the result of illegal wiretaps). Parents themselves, cocreators Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott have an infinite wellspring of material at their disposal. As writer Jerry Scott explains, "As long as kids keep having runny noses and wiping them on the drapes, we're in business."
And business is booming. Running in nearly 1,000 newspapers and more than 20 other periodicals worldwide, Baby Blues is enjoyed by 40 million fans daily.
The latest colorful treasury, Driving Under the Influence of Children, not only contains over 240 pages of award-winning Baby Blues comic strips, but also the very first Baby Blues stickers, including a bumper sticker that should be affixed to nearly every minivan on the road.
Customer Reviews:
Another Smash Hit.......2006-03-21
I have all the Baby Blues books, and this one is the best of the treasuries. I loved it.
Very very cute.......2006-03-08
Great book. You should buy it if you want to have a good laugh!
Humorous look at real family life.......2005-08-30
As a parent of four grown sons, I found this a very entertaining and accurate view of the 26 child rearing years I spent at home with my sons. So I bought this book for my son and his wife who are raising twins, a boy and a girl.
The bumper sticker in the back of the book is a nice bonus: "Driving under the influence of children" How true!!!!
Highly recommended, not to mention just plain funny.......2005-07-04
Driving Under The Influence Of Children is the latest compiled treasury of "Baby Blues" comic strips, collecting the daily struggles of two parents and the three precocious young children who exist to exhaust their resources, wallets, and supply of clean clothes. Parents everywhere are sure to see their own experiences reflected in the good-natured humor of the stay-at-home "I prefer to think of it as twenty-five years of maternity leave" mother and well-meaning father with noticeably less stamina around babies at maximum volume ("How come when you look after the kids it's 'parenting' but when I look after the kids it's 'not working'?" asks the beleagured mother). Baby Blues remains a gem among comic strips, both in that its characters are permitted to age with the passage of time, and in that it remains as fresh, funny, and all-too-insightful of the human condition as it was in its inception. Highly recommended, not to mention just plain funny.

Book Description
Includes hundreds of Twain's most memorable quips and comments on life, love, history, culture, travel, and diverse other topics, among them "He is now fast rising from affluence to poverty"; "Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please"; and "More than one cigar at a time is excessive smoking."

MT Fan.......2007-09-24
This book of quotations contains many observations dressed with great wit, humor and smarts that perhaps many can relate, but very few can put into words as only Twain can.
A book? See, that's where I have an issue!.......2007-09-21
A Book. It says so right on the front cover. I don't have the exact specifications to know what "a book" is but, I know it is NOT some TINY, LITTLE, insignifcantly sized pamplet labeled Book! You know what? Charge nine dollars for a book but, make it a real book. This stupid things is insulting and could be finished in less than a bathroom break. I find it deceptive, insulting and waring that this can happen. So, read the entire description of a work and do not depend upon its claims. This is a pamplet that can't be judged by its deceptive cover.
The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain.......2007-01-18
Great for a coffee table book. It is full of the character of Mark Twain.
Overpriced.......2007-01-03
The book contains Mark Twain's wit.
It was much smaller than I expected.
It's still funny, a hundred years later........2006-11-11
A nice, slim volume that you may read a few lines from, put it down, and come back later and read a few more. Mostly fun, all are thoughful; Huck Finn is a good philospher for all time.
Book Description
Over 1,800 quips and quotes from an icon of American literature, on a variety of subjects from accidents to youth, and many in-between. All the humor, irreverence, and insight that were uniquely Twain come alive, enhanced by charming black and white line drawings. Also included is a chronology o Twain's life.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reading.......2007-01-15
Wonderful compliation of quotes and bits of wisdom by Mark Twain. Enjoyed the book immensely!
Perfect Gift for Twain Enthusiast.......2004-03-25
For her birthday, my good friend asked for "a comprehensive, attractively bound book of Mark Twain quotes." And I spent a significant amount of time on Amazon and in other bookstores looking for one that fit the bill.
I did a lot of research, read all the editorial and customer reviews, flipped through some of the contenders and finally decided on this one. 1) It's available in hardback, 2) The print and pictures are beautiful 3) It contains hundreds of quotes on every subject imaginable, down to Turkish Baths.
The proof's in the pudding, or in this case the proof's in the look on the face of the birthday girl. She was absolutely delighted and immediately started reading. In fact, I had to pull her away from the book in order to get her to enjoy her birthday cake. That was a few weeks ago and she's still talking about it. If you're in a similar gift-giving situation, try the hardback version of this book over its competitors. I firmly believe that it's the best available.
Book Description
Arranged alphabetically by topic, from Adam to Youth, and culled from his novels, speeches, letters, and conversations, this anthology of quotes is timeless and represents the very essence of Mark Twain -- hilarious, cranky, and insightful.

Honesty: the best of all the lost arts.......2007-03-25
And so it goes, page after page. You'll find your favorites.
"Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed sownstairs a step at a time." Pudd'nhead Wilson 1894, ch 6.
There's how Mr. Ayres presents them from a variety of sources, Twain's books as well as speeches, his notebook and essays and a few from letters and some listed as attributed to him. I have a nice collection of books on my favorite subjects but this simple one, nothing fancy, is one I go back to time and again. I find myself quoting him in various contexts and glad that I know the quotes. the art of Mr. Ayres is to cull out the various quotes from so many sources. Twain said them, Ayres found them and put them together very sensibly by catagories such as Heroism, Music andd Right and Wrong. It's an A to Z compendium. You'll find plenty of lively, homespun quotes that often feel like the very heart of the American character. Can't go wrong with this book.
Cheer Up with Biting Humor of Mark Twain.......2004-11-06
Enjoy few quotes from this humorous book, then go and buy a copy:
ADVERTISING
During his days as a journalist, the young Mark Twain once edited a small newspaper in Missouri. A subscriber wrote in, saying that he had found a spider in his paper and asked whether this was a sign of good or bad uck. Twain answered:
"Dear Subscriber: Finding a spider in your paper was neither good luck nor bad luck for you. The spider was merely looking over our paper to see which merchant is not advertising so that he can go to that store, spin his web across the door and lead a life of undisturbed peace ever afterward."
ADVICE
It is beter to give than receive - especially advice. Mark Twain was always willing to donate free advice to the needy and the unsuspecting. "It's notble to be good", he said, "and it's nobler to teach others to be good, and less trouble."
Whenever you find that you are on the side of majority, it is time to reform (- or pause and reflect).
BELIEFS
If the man doesn't believe as we do, we say he is a crank, and that settles it. I mean, it does nowadays, because now we can't burn him.
SURGERY
Mark Twain offered this advice on the proper state of mind for undergoing surgery: "Console yourself with the reflection that you are giving the doctor pleasure, and that he is getting paid for it."
INSULTS
When Mark Twain disapproved of someone, he was not likely o keep it a secret. A remark he made on hearing of the death of an annoying person is typical:
"He has done a thing for me which I wouldn't even have done for myself. If he will only stay dead now I will call the account square and drop the grudge I bear him."
The Wit and Wisom of Mark Twain.......2001-09-09
A hilarious book of qoutes, sayings, and one-liners only Mark Twain could have the genious to create.
A qoute from Adam, the first of many: Adam was but human - this explains it all. He did not want the apple for the apple's sake, he wanted it only because it was forbidden. The mistake was in not forbidding the serpent; then he would have eaten the serpent.
From Adam, the wit and humor only becomes more hysterical, more riveting, more evident; and we soon discover the true intelligence of Mark Twain. He was not an ordinary man; for no mere ordinary man could have thought, and often dared, to utter such words as Mark Twain, in the era in which he lived.
The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain contains some of his most outrageous qoutes, either written within his books, or his journals, and spanning more than four decades. A great read, which you don't have to start at the beginning, and work your way to the end. And a perfect way to escape the drollery of prime time television.
Amusing and Timeless Reading.......2000-05-22
Mark Twain captures human nature at it's best and worst in this book. The collection of quotes by Twain "alphabetically" comment honestly on topics ranging from adultery to government to money to youth. Such insight into humanity rarely comes along in a lifetime (or several lifetimes!) His words in truly reflect society during his lifespan and, as I have reread this book several times, the passages reflect society today. This book is an "easy read" as it contains memorable quotes as well as portions of a variety of speeches, papers and books/stories Mr. Twian wrote. You can read the entire book at one sitting or glance through it if you have a few minutes to spare and still feel the impact of his writings , thus finding yourself highly amused by his insight. You can pick up the book again at a later time and enjoy it as much as before. The "authors"/collectors/writers of this book are to be applauded.
Book Description
Mark Twain...On kindness: Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.On friends: Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.On growing old: Take any road you please...it curves always, which is a continual promise, whereas straight roads reveal everything at a glance and kill interest. On truth and lies: many when they come to die have spent all the truth that was in them, and enter the next world as paupers. I have saved up enough to make an astonishment there. On health and fitness: Part of the secret success in life is to eat what you like and let the food it out inside.
Customer Reviews:
Timeless pearls from a timeless man.......2000-04-26
What is there to say....but if you are a person who has read anything and everything by Mark Twain then it can't hurt to have this. It is a fun little collection of witty and intelligent observations from what I consider to be one of the greatest writers to have graced print. For those who are only familiar with something like Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn, I would still recommend this - it is but an all too brief introduction to Twain the genius who in some respects tackles far more of the world (particularly his political and religious views) than most serious authors. Most of his views are still relevant to the 21st century - this man was way ahead of his time! This little gem serves as both an introduction and a reminder of how timeless his views are. The unfortunate aspect is that just by continuing to show us how relevant his criticsm of religion and racism was and is, we are reminded that this is because sadly our society has not changed much in 150 years or so.
Get this book! - then get everything else by this man (not all bookstores like to keep these for too long)! . It sure beats a lot of the other "Little Books of Wisdom" that are out there!
