Book Description
Many elements converge in the construction of a high-quality art collection, making it a fascinating, intellectual and emotional adventure, a journey of discovery and a labour of love. Formed over the course of thirty years by Udo Horstmann and his wife, the Horstmann collection is rather exceptional inasmuch as it offers a captivating vision of the variety of solutions adopted by black artists over the course of the centuries: nearly 120 extraordinary sculptures, figures, masks, household objects and weapons from Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Kenya and Sudan.
The origin of the artworks-- selected for their perfection transcending the mere utilitarian function-- touches all of the lands of the continent, including the southern and eastern lands rarely so authoritatively represented in other collections, and their execution covers an arc of time of several millennia.
The presence of ancient works contributes to the demolition of the preconception that has weighed unfairly until recent years on African art, and that is the absence of evolution in the artistic creation of Black Africa, and therefore of any historic quality. This is a difficult negation to cancel if African sculpture is still often labeled as "primitive."
Another meritorious quality of the Horstmanns lies in the fact that they chose the sculptures in their collection, not out of any generic passion for the exotic and neither for any abstract demand for representativity of ethnicity or significance or destination, but for their quality, for the enchantment of the "form," or better, of the "forms."
Paging through the book, the reader will discover that the artistic creation, that is, the need to give "form" to the formless, is a common heritage of mankind, shared by the artists of Black Africa.

Good resource.......2007-09-06
Very informative and easy to read book. Her advice matched my own tattoo experience exactly. I had a great tattoo experience but wish I had read her book before making my first tattoo appointment.
A great start.......2007-05-14
Honestly, for people like me, who have thought about a tattoo for years, not seriusly enough to do it, but not with so little importance that the idea is forgoten fast, this is a great start. If you have had many doubts about tattoos in general, this is a good start, and an interesting reading anyway.
An excellent first book about tattooing.......2007-04-06
I had just gotten my first tattoo when I noticed something strange inside of me shifting and wanted to understand. This book was so excellent as a first book in understanding the history, how ink gets into the demis layer of the skin, how to choose a tattoo image and artist, tattoo symbology basics (this author wrote a whole other book on it, but I like this condenced version), aftercare, and much more.
Although I have purchased other books that delve into one region or another of tattooing, I still refer back to this book all the time.
I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone considering a tattoo, or who has recently been tattooed for the first time. Even old-timers who wish to explain to others or those wishing to understand this cultural phenomenon will appreciate this book.
Most excellent! Thanks to amazon for a great deal on it also!
Some good tidbits.......2007-03-11
I got this after already having gotten some tattoos. It did have some good info. Would be good for someone without any tattoo experience.
Good Primer on the Tattooing Process.......2007-01-10
This book does an adequate job of explaining the overall process of pursuing a tattoo, from a vague concept to a piece of permanent art embedded in your dermis.
If you're looking for a lot of design examples, this is not the book for you.
However, there is a chapter in this book devoted to the "method" of picking a design; narrowing down your choices, where to look for examples, and other tips that are very useful for someone who is completely in the dark in regards to a 'final' concept.
This book also contains a lot of tattoo trivia and jargain which will appeal to those who are interested in tatoo history/terminology/etc.

Intricate story of a legendary war.......2007-06-13
A Thousand Ships is the first in a series of comics which retell the story of the Trojan war in comic book form. It begins with Paris, the lost prince of Troy who has been raised by farmers as a farmer, making his first ever journey to the capital. He tells his girlfriend it's a short trip, but even before he leaves the oracles are speaking and don't seem to agree. Meanwhile, Achillies is just leaving boyhood and, when confronted with the choice of short life and fame in war versus a long life that won't be remembered, he is very much for the short glorious life. His mother has other plans and struggles to save him from himself.
The plot is extremely intricate. It all comes from mythology, and there's a lot there to pull from. Doing the Illiad in seven comics makes sense. One book would only have allowed for the outline of the story. By breaking it into more books, the story is more complete and here the Illiad has been adapted well to the medium.
Graphically the book is well drawn. I'm guessing that the big challenge here was to keep faces consistent so that all the characters can be told apart. There are many, many characters and they are recognizable from frame to frame, if that helps to tell you the level of detail. The storytelling and how layouts play into that is good too. Layouts help to blend in and reveal characters's backstories (and everyone has a back story in mythology) and to communicate oracles and messages from the various gods.
This is a good read as a comic book. Being a modern take on the Illiad, which concievably someone might someday make you read, is an added bonus. Libraries should definitely stock this series. For individuals and families this is a good buy for a comic book, and a pretty good read. You should already know this, but if you don't then here goes, many of the classics have a lot of sex and violence. So, don't buy this for your four year old if you don't want them to see naked people and drawings of smeared entrails.
I got my copy autographed........2006-08-09
This book reprints the first nine issues of the Age of Bronze comic books. It's a beautifully drawn, well written comic book about the Trojan War. The only problem I have with the comic, and it'a a minor problem, is that there are so many characters, it's hard to keep track of who's who. Highly recommended to fans of graphic literature.
Holy Cow! This is off the chart great........2006-06-28
I just ripped through A Thousand Ships and the second book in the series, Sacrifice, in two days and I'm bowled over. What a tour de force these books are. Shanower seamlessly incorporates all the myths entwined in the Trojan War. An incredible feat by itself, it's even more impressive because he achieves this without bogging down what is, after all, a ripping good story.
In the course of the book, Shanower offers some interesting insights on some of the more puzzling and disturbing events (Iphigenia's sacrifice comes to mind). I also was impressed by how he developed the characters. For instance, he convincingly portrays Odysseus changing from a clever Trojan War draft-dodger to a gung-ho warrior by the end of the second book.
I can't wait for Shanower's next book in the series. Until then, I'm pressing these books on everyone I know. They're THAT good. Bravo!
the Bronze Age brought brilliantly to life.......2006-02-06
Eric Shanower does a fabulous job of bringing the Mycenaean world and the story of the Trojan War to life. Shanower has a different perspective on many of the characters than I might choose, but still I find his protagonists credible and compelling. With a combination of strong characterization and historically accurate settings and costumes, this is simply one of the best reimaginings of the myth I've encountered.
Highly recommended for fans of graphic novels and aficionados of the ancient world alike -- as well as for those who just love a gripping story!
Wow!.......2005-03-15
This book is the first in a series by author and illustrator Eric Shanower. This series combines the Classic stories surrounding the Trojan War with modern archaeology, and uses a graphic novel format to bring those ancient stories to life. Everyone is here: Priam, Paris, Odysseus, Menelaus, and (of course) the radiant Helen. This book begins with Paris's arrival in the court of King Priam, and follows through to Agamemnon's gathering of the Greek armada.
This is a wonderful graphic novel, one that really brings the old stories to life, and puts them together to form a complete and logical whole. I really liked the way the author used our present knowledge of ancient architecture and clothing to make the stories seem so realistic.
Now, I don't recommend this graphic novel for younger or more sensitive readers. If you are familiar with the Classical stories, you know that such topics as rape, incest, and homosexuality are an integral part of the story. As such, any book that deals with these stories *must* deal with these topics.
But, even with that in mind, I must say that this is an excellent book. If you are a fan of the ancient Greek and Roman stories, and would like to see them in a modern format, then this is the book for you. I am very glad that I read this book, and can't wait for the next one to come out!

Changed my life as a teacher.......2006-04-07
My first year of teaching in South Central Los Angeles I was frustrated, isolated, and thought about quitting constantly.
Then I picked up this book.
It changed the way I viewed my students, curriculum, and my role as an educator.
Now, five years later, I'm studying to become a principal to effect change in some small way, like Marva Collins did.
Looking forward to completing both books...........2006-03-02
I've just received and began reading both of Marva Collin's books, and I'm looking forward to completing them. Something to remember about this specific book in particular is that some of the writings in it are from speeches given, along with her other writings (which I might take as personal journaling, but I could be wrong). In any event, if she says one thing once, it's well worth repeating. I'm glad to have found her and her books.
One of the most inspiring books I have ever read in my life!.......2005-02-24
I would recommend this book to all teachers it is very motivating. Ms. Collin is beacon of light to all who teach!
Heartfelt sentiments in pedantic prose.......2004-06-13
I am a dedicated teacher who loves to read. This book appeals to me as a teacher, but loses me as a reader. The same points are made over and over again in the first section of the book; I found myself increasingly irritated by the editing errors that abound on each page. The same quotations are repeated several times, sometimes in the span of a few pages. It reads like a collection of notes scribbled too fast.
As Ms. Collins might say to one of her students, "Nice try, but why don't we try proofreading this to make it better?"
It touched my soul.......2003-02-10
To anyone that is searching for an answer to our current educational crisis, you have found it! Marva Collins is a woman who has been chosen by GOD to help children learn. She makes no excuses for them, she just teaches them. This book embodies everything I am aspiring to be as an educator. The message in this book is simple. If you love children enough to nurture them as if they were your own, you will help them become life long learners. This book should become a required reading for anyone that is preparing themsleves for the life long journey of learning, and teaching. If the president can see that Marva's Way is great so can everyone else. Buy it! It is a blessing for the educators soul.

Extraordinary Teachers by Stephenson.......2005-05-02
This work attests to the fact that a good teacher must have
the following characteristics:
- passion for the subject matter
- technical knowledge of the subject
- excitement and connectivity
- results
- ability to develop the full potential of students
The author explains that critical thinking skills are an important aspect of superior teaching because student involvement is enhanced and comparative thinking is encouraged.
The case study method and community projects are classic
methodologies for developing critical thinking skills. In
large classes, the author advises us that story-telling and
personal empathy are important teaching tools which support
meaningful learning experiences. The work is valuable as a
tool for enhancing the tools available to teachers. The price
charged is reasonable for the considerable value of the information contained .
What an Extraordinary Book-very timely, and uplifting.......2001-11-01
This was such an uplifting book to read. We hear so many negative comments and stories about teaching. What a refreshing change to read a book that glorifies teachers and teaching, and makes one sit and think back on the good and bad teachers in our own lives. It's such an easy book to read, and it is broken down into short segments, so you don't need to devote large amounts of time to it. Each essay takes about 10 minutes or so to read. I sat down thinking I'd read a few minutes here and there, and ended up reading half the book in one sitting.
I am not a teacher, but a parent. I not only plan to give this book to teachers who have made a difference in my daughter's life, but also to teachers who made a difference in my own life. I know that tracking some of them down will be a challenge, but they need to know how appreciated they are. This book will help convey their importance.
A must read for anyone concerned with education in our country-parents, teachers, future teachers, ect.....
Book Description
In the bestselling tradition of The Pact and The Freedom Writers Diary—the inspiring story of one woman’s extraordinary promise and steely determination to make a difference in the world.
One morning in 1987 Oral Lee Brown walked into a corner store in East Oakland, California, to buy snacks for work. A little girl asked her for a quarter, and Brown assumed that she wanted to buy candy, but surprisingly she bought bread and bologna—staples for her family.
Later that day Brown couldn’t get the little girl out of her mind. Why wasn’t she in school? Why was she out begging for money to buy food for her family? After several weeks of not being able to sleep, Brown went to look for the girl at the local elementary school and soon found herself in a first-grade classroom. She didn’t find the little girl, but before she left she found herself promising the kids that if they finished high school, she would pay for their college education.
At the time, Oral Lee Brown made only $45,000 a year.
But years later, after annually saving and investing $10,000 of her own money and establishing the Oral Lee Brown Foundation, this remarkable woman made good on her promise: after nineteen of the original twenty-three students graduated from high school, she sent them all to college. And in May of 2003, LaTosha Hunter was the first of Brown’s “babies,” as well as the first person in her family, to graduate from college.
This marvelous and inspiring book is the amazing story of one woman's unending desire to make a difference. And if once was not enough, in 2001 Brown made the same promise to three new classrooms of first-, fifth-, and ninth-graders. Brown and her foundation are now committed to adopting a new crop of kids to send to college every four years.
Brown’s pledge to the students was not without great personal and public sacrifice. Her promise turned her life upside-down—it strained her relationships, and at times required her to work several different jobs. Brown also developed a strong emotional attachment to the children—for many of these students Brown was the one consistent adult in their lives.
In a world short on heroes, altruism, and dedication, THE PROMISE shows that it is still possible to change lives for the better. This book will encourage, uplift, and inspire every reader.
A portion of the proceeds from the book will go to the Oral Lee Brown Foundation. To learn more about the Oral Lee Brown Foundation please visit

An Inspiring Call to Action.......2007-04-16
An inspiring memoir of a woman who pledged to pay for the college education of a class of impoverished first graders. The author not only commits her own meager financial support, but all the resources she can muster to ensure the success of "her" kids.
This very accessible book should be read by everyone who cares about the education of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Inspiring story.......2007-04-05
Purchasing this book new helps the author continue her mission to ensure a college education for disadvantaged inner city children.
A model for uplifting our youth. .......2005-10-02
More than anything else, our youth need people to be there for them for the LONG-TERM. Not for 1 day, or 1 week, or 1 month, but as Oral Lee Brown shows us, for years. Imagine how our next generation would be impacted if adults nationwide reached out in just 10% of the way that Oral Lee Brown did? Go Ms. Brown for inspiring us all and go Caille Millner for doing such a wonderful job capturing this story. You're both heroes!
Using A Common Sense Approach For Life.......2005-08-03
After reading this book and having met Ms. Brown in person during a family situation in June, I was totally impressed and influenced by this Woman of courage. Ms. Brown happens to be the God Mother of my step-son who lives in Tulare, Ca. She and I started our conversation about this new generation of young people. It finally led to her being a book writer. One thing I can say about her during the 30-minute or so meeting is the need for properly educating our youth. If everyone cared as much as she does about education for all on the same level, then maybe more of our children would realize how important it is. The parents, neighborhood, and the churches should take a more visible interest in seeing that all kids, poor and rich would get these tools for enriching their lives.
I would say, Ms. Brown is most humble and not a star-struck person. She has truly been blessed by God. I can't imagine how she did all this and kept her sanity. God Bless this beautiful woman. I recently retired as a Job Counselor/Placement and mentor for young job seekers from the State of California/EDD. I share in her need to impress upon our children the importance of getting an education, it is the substance needed for a successful and stable lifestyle .
Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to express how much Ms. Brown has influenced me. I am hoping to get her to autograph my book someday.
Bettye Sullivan, Fresno, CA.
Everyone should read this book........2005-05-01
This book is written the way that an average person speaks, which is to say that it rambles a bit and frequently repeats things; but it's an easy read that I think every reader (both young and old) should find very approachable. As literature goes, it's not a great work of linguistic mastery. That being said, this is an excellent book that I wish everyone would read, because there's an extremely important lesson for all of us here.
Oral Lee Brown first recognized the very root cause of the brutal cycle of poverty that persists in America (it's the education system, people!), and then she tackled that problem in one of the most extraordinary ways I've ever heard of. Her story is brilliant and inspiring. And as I said before, I hope that it reaches as many people as possible, and will serve as an inspiration to us all. Great story, great lady, 5 stars.
Book Description
As a daughter, you tend to view your father as the "smartest man in the world." However, I am luckier than most because, as my permanent teacher, Jaime Richards has taught me that knowledge is a cycle of challenging, questioning, and redefining your own perceptions. His columns are written examples of his teaching method, encouraging students to focus on THE PURPOSE of what it means to be successful. I take his words to heart and hope I can make him as proud of me as I am of him. -Kyrra Richards
In high school, many of my dad's former students, as well as teachers, would approach me in the hallways telling me how much they loved Mr. Richards's column that day. I, without a doubt, always agreed. His columns reflect the passionate and loving man that he is. Not only his students, but adults admire him as a teacher and as a friend. Still, I know that as his daughter, I will always be his biggest fan. -Kylene Richards
Customer Reviews:
Jaime Richards is a Torch-Bearer.......2006-10-17
I was Jaime Richards' student ten years ago in the seventh grade, and I have never stopped learning from him. As a young girl, having a teacher who was so real with us students was monumental. He looked through my young age to the person inside, and encouraged all the wonderful things he found there. Everyday, he worked hard to inspire and activate our minds and spirits. Without the few mentors like him in my life, I wouldn't be happy, healthy, and successful today! He held the torch for me, when I didn't even know there was a torch to begin with... =)
As I sat at his recent book signing, and watched the line of students wait eagarly to speak with him, I knew I wasn't the only one. I noticed how the majority of the students were girls, and realized how powerful it is for a male teacher to inspire the warrior in young women. The sky's the limit!
