Book Description

A powerful, surreal novel, in the tradition of Gogol, about the chaotic events surrounding the arrival of a circus in a small Hungarian town. The Melancholy of Resistance, László Krasznahorkai's magisterial, surreal novel, depicts a chain of mysterious events in a small Hungarian town. A circus, promising to display the stuffed body of the largest whale in the world, arrives in the dead of winter, prompting bizarre rumors. Word spreads that the circus folk have a sinister purpose in mind, and the frightened citizens cling to any manifestation of order they can find—music, cosmology, fascism. The novel's characters are unforgettable: the evil Mrs. Eszter, plotting her takeover of the town; her weakling husband; and Valuska, our hapless hero with his head in the clouds, who is the tender center of the book, the only pure and noble soul to be found. Compact, powerful and intense, The Melancholy of Resistance, as its enormously gifted translator George Szirtes puts it, "is a slow lava flow of narrative, a vast black river of type." And yet, miraculously, the novel, in the words of The Guardian, "lifts the reader along in lunar leaps and bounds."

5 out of 5 stars Intense, rewarding, great.......2002-08-14

Hungarian author uses deep metaphor to set quest for meaning in a world of political struggle, chaos, and greed - Difficult and intensely rewarding. Definitely not an easy read. The basic story is of a small contemporary Hungarian town. Work is scarce and society is disintegrating, when a strange circus touting the world's greatest whale arrives and draws a large and dangerous crowd of unemployed men. This is the book that the Hungarian film, the 'Werkemeister's Harmonies' was based upon. While that was an extraordinary movie, the book surpasses it in depth and nuance.

      Book Description

Since North Ryland and Octavia March were wrenched apart and their childhood friendship destroyed, much has changed. North has had a successful career as a Bow Street runner, and has made quite a name and fortune for himself. So much so that when Octavia's fiancé (for she is now engaged to one of the most desirable men of the town) needs to hire a man to investigate threats on Octavia's safety, he is the only man that will do.

      3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-01-31

Lady Octavie (Vie) was raised with her actress mother who took protectors to support the two of them after her father dies. When her mother also passes away, Vie is taken in by her aristocratic grandfather who makes her promise to never tell anyone of her background. He also makes her promise to marry her distant cousin, Spinton in order to ensure her passage into the aristocracy. Her grandfather disinhereted her father after he married an actress, but now Vie is all he has. When her grandfather dies, Vie inherits his home and although they have not been officially bethrothed Vie knows she will marry Spinton as she keeps her promises. However, her heart still belongs to North (Norrie)Sheffield, who was her childhood friend and first lover and the bastard son of Lord Reyland.

North Sheffield is shocked when Vie's soon to be fiance Spinton hires him to find out who has been sending her anonymous love letters. The letters seem non-threatening but one of the letters advises that the writer knows Vie's secret. North is currently involved in a case that involves tracking down a vindictive murderer and he fears that if his former relationship with Vie is discovered she will be rejected by society or worse hurt by one of the criminals he is tracking.

When North and Vie meet again after years apart it is like they never left one another. They are each other's best friend and would do anything for one another. Soon they resume their sexual relationship although they both know they can never be together. Will they let society get in their way or go for what their hearts want?

I was kind of disappointed in the heroine Octavia (Vie). She is rather selfish in insisting that she fulfil her promises to the dead that she is willing to hurt three people to make herself feel noble. Her intended Spinton and her cousin Beatrice are in love, but Spinton will follow through with his promise to marry Vie unless she releases him from the bargain. Also, she is sending a message to Norrie that he's not good enough to marry, only to sleep with. The hero North is kind of stubborn also, but at least he is pushing Vie away because he fears she will be hurt by the criminals he is chasing. His motives are the only real noble ones here, but Vie wants to have her cake and eat it too...sleep with Norrie and marry Spinton. Still it is a passionate story and not really bad. I just didn't like Vie.

4 out of 5 stars Solid entry to Ryland Brothers series.......2006-03-10

North Sheffield-Ryland was the illegitimate son of Viscount Creed. After his mother passed, he was brought to live with his father's three other legitimate sons, his half-brothers. Try as he might he was never fully accepted by society so he diverted his energies into becoming a highly sought after private investigator. In cleaning up dirty little secrets of the ton he gained an acceptance and gratitude that he no longer desired.

Based on his reputation, the Earl of Spinton came to him asking for an investigation into disturbing letters his fiancé had been receiving. North knew the man's fiancé, Lady Octavia Vaux-Daventry. Octavia had been his childhood best friend and love whom he'd been forced to give up twelve years ago when her wealthy grandfather came into her life and claimed her as his heir. Convincing North that `he wasn't good enough' for the granddaughter of an earl.

Octavia, had resolved herself to keeping the promises made to her mother and grandfather of becoming a lady and marrying Earl Spinton a man she didn't love. Thrown together to smoke out and unmask the author of the letters the passions of their youth were re-kindled with a vengeance. As he worked to expose the blackmailer, another more dangerous enemy emerged. North would be willing to do what ever he had to in order to keep Octavia safe and back in his arms again.

*** I've been impressed with this authors ability in crafting well-written, adventuresome and sensual novels while thoroughly enjoying her Ryland brother series. Smith excels in creating strong, yet complex characters in her stories. She puts an edge on North, the dangerous but somewhat tortured hero, and creates empathy for Octavia who so wants to make good on her promises, even at the expense of her own happiness. Her writing is smooth, she establishes a nice intrigue, and the romance is lovely and sensual. While not my favorite Ryland book, I can still recommend it for those like me that tend to follow a well-done series!

3 out of 5 stars Satisfying, though at times dragging, historical romance.......2005-09-09

As children, North Sheffield-Ryland and Octavia Vaux-Daventry shared a unique background -- each is the child of an actress and a nobleman -- but with one difference. Octavia's parents married while North's did not. Growing up together in the backstages of Covent Garden, North and Octavia shared their dreams and hopes for the future. He dreamed of acceptance in his father's world, while she yearned for a secure future. But just as their childhood camaderie turned to something deeper, Octavia's grandfather, Lord Spinton, decided to acknowledge his granddaughter. To ensure her acceptance in her grandfather's world, North relinquished all contact with his "Vie."

Turning his back on the world that won't accept him, North begins a career in law enforcement. Twelve years later, he has made a name for himself, first as a Bow Street Runner, then with his own investigative firm. The society that he once dreamed of joining now welcomes him with open arms. During an investigation at a ton party, North encounters Octavia again.

For the past dozen years, Octavia has tried to mold herself into the lady her grandfather envisioned. Hiding her true self behind a practiced demeanor, she has yet to bring herself to fulfill her grandfather's last request: to marry the new Lord Spinton. Adding to Octavia's doubts is her reaction to seeing her beloved "Norrie" again. When her would-be fiancé asks North to investigate some mysterious letters Octavia is receiving, both believe it is their chance to finally lay their past to rest and say their final farewells. But can a love that has survived a dozen years apart really end?

The second in Kathryn Smith's series about the intriguing Ryland brothers, IN YOUR ARMS AGAIN is a poignant love story driven by the internal conflict of the main characters. North is a noble, strong-willed hero with one flaw -- his inability to envision a future with the woman he loves. Octavia is a vibrant, passionate woman slowly suffocating under the weight of everyone's expectations. While their situation is poignant and heartfelt, it seems to drag on just a tad too long. Several secondary characters add depth and a sometimes welcome diversion, especially the rest of the Ryland siblings, whose stories I can't wait to read. Emotional and lushly romantic, IN YOUR ARMS AGAIN should satisfy fans of historical romance everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable part of the Ryland brothers series.......2005-06-14

While this may not be Ms. Smith's strongest book, I liked it. I enjoy character studies, so if you don't, you may have problems with this. I enjoyed the childhood sweethearts aspect very much; it was so obvious they belonged together. What a wonderful relationship they have. The book also provides more insight into the unmarried brothers, especially Brahm.

On the negative side, North's and Octavia's reasons (especially his) for not pursuing a relationship (or even acknowledging a friendship) became old and weak. It was not, perhaps, the most compelling books in terms of its suspense. But I felt that the strong emotional pull and chemistry between the characters overshadowed these negatives.

If I had the ability to give portions of stars, I'd rate it at 3.8, but that may only be because I just finished In the Night, which I LOVED. So I'm giving In Your Arms Again a solid 4 stars. I might have rated it higher than four if I'd reviewed it before reading the next entry. I think this is a solid link in the series, one that helps build the whole into something truly wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Former friends & one time lovers are brought together again.......2004-09-10

North Sheffield, a former Bow Street Runner and now successful private investigator, is hired by Lord Spinton to find out who is sending unwanted letters of adoration to his intended. North is more than interested in this case, especially since Lord Spinton's intended is none other than Lady Octavia Vaux-Daventry - North's friend and one time lover! While as first hesitant to accept the case given his personal involvement with Octavia, he eventually accepts Lord Spinton's persistent requests as he could not explain the conflict of interest without divulging the secret of his past with Octavia. Once involved with the case, North begins to recall what he loved about Octavia so much and also the reasons - both personal and societal - why he can never be with her again. He cannot believe that he hid these memories and feelings for all those years. Yet, she has a good life to look forward to with Spinton, and he knows he could not ever give her that.

Octavia is more than surprised to see North Sheffield brought back into her life by none other than the man who is trying to woo her into marriage. Yet she is glad to see North again, and his presence in her life makes the fact that she would only be marrying Lord Spinton for convenience all the more bitter. As much as Octavia remembers her times with North fondly, society and family see things another way, and Octavia must do what is right. What is expected of her.

As the letters to Octavia become more insistent, North devises a brazen plan to try and draw the secret admirer into tipping his hand - North pretends to also court Lady Octavia for her hand in marriage! This plan will also allow North to see more of Octavia, as he is very much aware. As the two former friends spend more time together, the strong feelings from the past come to the surface and result in some very heated moments between North and Octavia. Yet both know they cannot continue the charade - it cannot go any further. But their feelings for one another cannot be denied further. They both realize that any possible future they may have is complicated by what each other brings to the relationship: Octavia's need to fulfill her obligations to family and societal expectations, and North's dangerous past in the criminal underbelly of London. Somehow, these obstacles need to be overcome before they can be truly together again.

Ms. Smith brings together a strong cast of characters in this novel, the second in the Ryland Brothers series. North is a dark and dangerous man, observing and protecting London's ton from the seedier aspects of the city. He has trapped away his feelings and emotions, as they are a weakness in his profession that only lead to trouble. Yet his feelings for Lady Octavia will not be held back any longer, and trouble is not far away. Octavia is a woman trying to do the right thing - even if it is the wrong thing for her. Ms. Smith is very astute in capturing the true societal norms of this period in history. Octavia's feelings of obligation, duty, and place were put upon every person in society from the poor to the elite. Yet it was often the women who bore the brunt of this burden. Reading this book and experiencing Octavia's journey through these emotions was heart wrenching at times but knowing that she finally makes the right decision for herself despite the penalties that ensue is pure bliss. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a great story of getting a second chance - and taking it despite the risks.

              Book Description

Noble David Cook explains, in vivid detail and sweeping scope, how the conquest of the New World was achieved by a handful of Europeans--not by the sword, but by deadly disease. The Aztec and Inca empires with their teeming millions were destroyed by a few hundred Europeans whose most important weapons, though the conquerors did not realize it at the time, were diseases previously unknown in the Americas. The end result of the colonizing experience in the Americas, whether of the Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, English, or French, was the collapse of native society.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very well done. .......2006-12-22

What role did disease play in shaping the conquest of the New World. This book accounts for more than just the Aztec invasion but covers the Caribbean and South America as well. It is very well written and takes an interesting look at the epidemiology of the region. For those interested in either the imperial conquests of Spain or the development of epidemiology this is a great book. Cook writes very well and in most places his epidemiological accounts are well supported.

4 out of 5 stars WORST DISEASE OUTBREAK EVER.......2006-11-20

From discovery in 1492 to the mid 17th Century, the Americas were hit with one outbreak of infectious disease after another. Cook describes waves of smallpox, typhus, measles and influenza that killed off a continent of people. He is almost certainly right that these plagues destroyed more than the Spanish. Unfortunately he is unable to give any precise figures, or even anything close to it, as to how many actually perished. We can be confident, though, that this was the worst disease outbreak ever.

              5 out of 5 stars A masterful summary.......2004-06-16

This is simply the best account of the depopulation of Spanish America in the sixteenth century. It deals with the range of diseases involved, the regional death rates, the native responses, and the arguments pro and contra the high estimates of death.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough and Scholarly Study of Crucial Issue.......2003-07-04

This is a very thorough and well organized study of one of the most important and ghastly events in human history. In the century following the European discovery of the Americas, approximately 90% of the native population perished. The agents of this demographic and cultural catastrophe were an apparently unceasing series of epidemics transmitted by European and African immigrants to the Western Hemisphere. Isolated for millenia from the Western Hemisphere, the native peoples of the Americas were virgin soil for smallpox, plague, influenza, measles, and a wide range of other serious infections. Native American susceptibility to epidemic disease and not any technological or cultural advantage was the key factor allowing Europeans to conquer the Americas. The conquest of Western Hemisphere and European dominance of its resources resulted in a huge economic and ecological windfall for European states. This windfall was a key factor propelling the global dominance of European culture and states.
Cook does an excellent job of systematically surveying the various epidemics and their demographic impacts. This is difficult because of the need to cover an extended period of time, a broad variety of regions, and the fragmentary nature of the data. This book is an excellent summary of available knowledge on this important topic. Very organized and written competently, this book will be the standard reference on this topic.

5 out of 5 stars It shocks in its gritty realism yet keeps you interested.......2003-03-22

An excellent account of the history of the Americas, it focuses on the diseases while keeping in touch with both the cruelty suffered by the natives and the culture shock. It goes deeper into the less dramatic side (where less writers dwell in) and makes this a must read for anyone interested in the period.

              Download Description

Braxi and Azea-two interstellar civilizations fighting an endless war over a long-forgotten cause; two peoples descended from the human species and bred over countless generations to embody opposing ideals, seeking opposite paths to power.
The Braxana-dominant tribe of the fierce Braxin Holding-are brilliant, powerful, and aloof from the society they rule. There were bred by their primitive forebears to be aggressive, competitive, and secretive beyond all prior human norms. The mysteries of their internal society are legendary even among the people they rule.
The Azeans-masters of genetic science-have redesigned their own race to reflect ancient ideals. Now they seek to unlock the powers of the human mind, using telepathy to penetrate where mere weapons cannot.
But Zatar and Anzha-master Braxana and Azean generals-have exceeded all genetic expectations of their opposed cultures, and have made this endless war a personal vendetta. Who can say what will happen when these ultimate warriors use every power of mind and body to claim the vengeance of total conquest?

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books ever..........2007-02-28

This was one of my favorite books in junior high school. I must have read it a dozen times by college. Even now I'll pick it up and re-read it every 3-5 years. I think the complexity of the weave and layers that make up this story and the characters has intrigued me since the first reading.

I'll go along with several of the other readers and say that if you don't like the hard sci-fi genre or the harshness and black & white world views that goes along with a lot of books from this genre, then you probably won't like this book. That said, there are a lot of concepts involved in this book that were revolutionary when this book was written. The approach of engaging the reader in understanding genetic manipulation through scientific genetic modification or through "natural" breeding and eugenics must have been a huge and daunting undertaking for the author. Of course she used 511 pages to tell the story so skimping on pages wasn't the primary goal. Every time I read it though I always wish there was more to read...

The sequel, The Wilding, was not as gripping for me. It may simply be nostalgia that draws me back to Conquest, but I didn't feel the story was as tight or as compelling when... well, no spoilers. It just didn't keep me the same way this classic did.

              5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2007-02-15

I read it when it was first printed. My sister and I each bought a copy, so we could have both covers. I loved the characters, the society, it was all just brilliant. Even now all these years later it is my favorite Hard SCIFI book.

1 out of 5 stars Entertaining but frustrating.......2006-08-23

Storywise, I found this book to be quite entertaining, a far future space opera in which humans have speciated and no one knows which planet is the Source World. C.S. Friedman created several interesting cultures, the main ones being the Azean Empire which has had telepaths for thousands of years and the Braxin Holding which is ruled by the Braxana, a race of cruel and ruthless superwarriors who despise anyone with ESP. Although the Braxana once had women warriors, in the current era the culture is male-dominant. The thought of being dominated by a female is abhorrent to them. The two empires have been at war off and on for thousands of years. There are highly detailed cultural and historical backgrounds for both posthuman races, something I always find enjoyable. Friedman's style is lively and her characters colorful.

That said, there is a lot that is wrong with the book, part of it the author's fault, part the publisher's. This was her first published novel, written over a period of 12 years, and it shows. For one thing this book has one of the largest plot holes I've ever come across. In Chapter 14 Zatar, the Braxana ruler, chases after an Azean ship that has been causing havoc to the Braxian war machine. The pilot seems to be able to make impossible maneuvers (no explanation) and seems to know where the next shot will come from (telepathy of course---telepathic communication apparently can be relayed across the galaxy much faster than the speed of light according to several scenes in the book). After a chase which few but a Braxana could survive, he catches up to the mysterious "swordship" and discovers that the unconscious pilot is not only female but has accouterments indicating that she is a telepath. Seething with hatred for her, he "syncs" her ship to his and heads back to the mothership. The pilot is not actually identified, but the only telepath involved with the war effort in the entire Azean Empire is the protagonist, Anzha Iyu. (The Azean Empire has had telepaths capable of transluminal communication for thousands of years, but no one thought to use them during their incessant wars until now. Figure that one out!) In the next chapter there is no mention of a telepath being held by the Braxana and Anzha Iyu is seen back on her own mothership as if nothing has happened. I read another 40 pages (to P. 262 out of 500) before quitting and there was no explanation to that point.

At times the writing seems a bit self-indulgent and her efforts to manipulate the plot in the direction she wants it to go are transparent. She will write things that contradict what was written earlier in the book in order to justify some plot point. The final straw for me was the scene in Chapter 15 where Zatar and Anzha face off at last after 250 pages. At age 6 Anzha became catatonic when she witnessed the horrifying death of her parents at the hands of none other than Zatar. When she is finally brought out of her catatonia by healing telepaths, they find that she has enormous telepathic potential at an age when telepathic power usually does not even manifest. Anzha is obsessed with revenge against Zatar. Zatar hates Anzha with a passion and wants to kill her. He calls a truce conference with the Azeans in order to have a chance to assassinate her, but his attempt fails. Because of her telepathic powers he is completely at her mercy, but he says to her, "I will kill you by my own hands, in my own time. In my own way." Then she says to him, "I will kill you by my own hands. In my own time. In my own way. None other will have you." Then she lets him go. Oh, man, give me a break! I can only swallow so much.

Actually, I think I might have continued reading if I weren't so annoyed by all the typos in this book. If DAW paid someone to proofread it, they should demand their money back! I have never, ever, ever seen a book with so many typos. "Undedying" instead of "underlying", a character named "Yiril" is twice called "Viril"(Is this a new character? No, it isn't.), commas where they don't belong so that you have to go back and reread the sentence. It goes on and on and on.

It takes a lot to make me give up on a long book that I've gotten over halfway through, but the further I went the more resistance I felt to reading further. The frustrations got to the point where they outweighed the good. The one star rating I gave it is overly harsh---it can be quite entertaining if you can forgive my criticisms---but there is no way it deserves the 4.5 star rating it currently has. This is my effort to move the rating in the proper direction.

4 out of 5 stars Echoes of Dune.......2006-06-18

First off I am almost hesitant to write a review of this novel because I belive Byron 72 "lost child"'s review is a very accurate summation of this excellent science-fiction novel. The best I can probably do is elaborate a bit more on the similarities of these two novels-(In Conquest Born & Dune). One of the most powerful similarities is the sense of history that both authors create in their novels. This sense of history and tradition is what directs the events and shapes the destiny of the two races involved-the Braxi and the Azea. The two main characters are also shaped by their histories, and Ms. Friedman uses their history to add depth and complexity to their actions. If complex, atmospheric, epoch-spanning Science-Fiction is your thing and you are a fan of the Dune novels than you definately need to give this book a try.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, poor publishing.......2006-03-04

I have read and re-read this book many times since it was first published. I find it to be one the all-time best SF books - and one of the few newer ones that can rank with Golden Age classics like Childhood's End and The Demolished Man. I have read most of Friedman's other books as well, and although they range from good (Madness Season) to excellent (Wilding, Coldfire Trilogy), she suffers from what I always think of as Orson Welles Syndrome: never quite being able to match up to that first brilliant work. If you like space opera, if you enjoy getting a visceral kick out of language that sometimes is almost cinematic in its impact ("He stands like a statue, perfect in arrogance." Was there ever a better SF first line?), then you will like this book. You can buy it with confidence. Unfortunately, this new edition takes a powerful book and drops the ball numerous times due to poor editing. While I never found any typos in my original copy (which I still have), this new "collectors" edition has a lot. It's really sad that the publishers couldn't seem to muster up enough passion or energy to go beyond a standard computer spell-check and get an actual person to proof the galleys. There are a lot of times when a needless typo will cause you to stop and re-read the sentence, taking you completely out of the story. I also didn't like the ad copy on the book, which seemed to promise additional story material, when in fact all that was new was a foreward and a sort of index to characters and cultures that really doesn't add anything to the book. All in all, I give the writer's work a full five, with a "Bravo!" thrown in for good measure, and the publishers barely a three for the sloppy job they did on their end.

The name of Jesus is encoded in virtually every book in the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. In detailed textual analysis of hundreds of Bible passages, Jewish scientist Yascov Rambsel proves the Bible's infallibility by showing how God encrypted His word with the good news of the coming of His Son.

4 out of 5 stars Yeshua and the OT code........2007-03-25

Yacov Rambsel shares some of his discoveries of the Bible code in the biblical Hebrew language.
He finds the name "Yeshua" throughout the OT.He doesn't use the code in any attempt to prophecy the future. He details how the names are located in the related Scripture.

Aside from the work on the code,I also found some of the issues he touched on very interesting.
From a historic point he mentions Bar Kochba and what the Romans did to the Temple Mount in AD71.

Mr.Rambsel shares some new thoughts on the purpose of Elijah and Moses' appearance on the Mount of Transfiguration.Relevant to that topic he discusses the links between Yeshua,Moses, and Elijah in the code.

The author's brief examination of the events of MT.27:50-54 was something that I hadn't considered. This was the resurrection of saints that happened after the crucifixion.

This is a thought-provoking book and it's easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Food for thought and profound reflection.......2006-03-02

This fascinating book opens with a special foreword by Bible Code investigator Grant R Jeffrey plus a foreword by Yapha Linda Rambsel, wife of the author. A Hebrew Aleph-Bet chart provides the Hebrew letters, the gematria (their numerical values) the phonetics and the meanings.

In the introduction, Rambsel explains that the name Yeshua ha' Mashiach (Hebrew for Jesus the Messiah) appears encoded in every book of the Hebrew Old Testament. To give just a few examples: in Genesis He appears as The Beginning, the promised Redeemer and the Seed of the woman; in Exodus, as the Passover Lamb and the Deliverer; in Leviticus, as the High Priest; in Numbers, as the Pillar of Cloud and Fire and the Manna from on high; in Ruth as the Kinsman Redeemer; in Ezra as the Faithful Scribe and in Psalms as Lord and Shepherd, High Tower and the Rock of our Salvation.

In the New Covenant (New Testament), the characteristics of Jesus are given in all of the books too, for example the Great Physician in James, the Chief Shepherd in I Peter and The Lord of Hosts in Jude.

The system of analysis or the technique used to find the encoded words is explained clearly. It is called equi-distant sequence and it means that the amount of Hebrew letters are counted that are equally distributed and which forms a logical word, phrase or sentence of a name, place or thing.

The 12 chapters are titled: Yeshua In The First Word, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Appointments Of Yeshua, Yeshua In The First Covenant, The Laws Of Probability, The Forerunner, Chastening And Blessing, A Remnant Saved, and He Ascended On High. Throughout the text, the verses are given in Hebrew script, transliterated phonetic Hebrew and in English, and every instance where the name Yeshua appears is discussed in relation to other relevant passages of scripture in both the Old and New Testaments.

In the conclusion: He Came And He Is Coming Again, the author examines various prophecies from inter alia Chronicles, Hebrews, Revelation, Isaiah, John and Hosea. He points out that the Hebrew gematria of Hosea 4:1 equals 1948 - the date on the Gregorian calendar when modern Israel became a sovereign nation.

The Appendix: Yeshua's First Coming, provides a long list of prophecies fulfilled by Jesus. Both the original prophecies and their fulfilment are given with the relevant scriptural verses. The book concludes with a bibliography.

The Bible Codes phenomenon has generated much controversy but it cannot be lightly dismissed. Further investigation is needed, but this compelling book deals with more than just codes. It also points out many other open correspondences between the Old and New Testament and investigates the meaning of the Hebrew gematria in significant passages of scripture.

Rambsel's style is clear and engaging, making the text easy to understand and quite compelling. Bible believing Christians will find the book a gem of wisdom, with insights and revelations on nearly every page. Even those who do not believe in the existence of hidden codes will find much to treasure in this little book.

I also recommend Restoring The Jewishness Of The Gospel: A Message To Christians by David H Stern, Understanding The Difficult Words of Jesus by David Bivin, Our Hands Are Stained With Blood by Michael L Brown, Yeshua by Ron Moseley and Your People Shall Be My People by Don Finto. May the reader be blessed with insight and understanding.

5 out of 5 stars a Masterful revelation of the Jesus in the Old Testament.......2001-12-26

My boss lent me his copy of this book as I was searching for answers about the Trinity while I was reading James R. White's The Forgotten Trinity. While I read these two books simultaneously and I recognized that I was reading Rambsel's book for pleasure and as a break from White's intense look at the Trinity. I learned so much more about the foretelling of Jesus in the Old Testament. The Jewish perspective on the God/Man through the stories in Genesis were even more enriching to me than the knowledge of secret codes placed there by God. I got the feeling that the codes were put in by God to tell those who put more faith in Science than in Spirit a special message: "I'm here!" I believe some of the television specials on the "Bible Code" do a better job on explaining it than this book. I learned so much though and was amazed so often that I'm still giving it 5 stars enthusiastically. My boss let me keep the book since I loved it so much.

                            4 out of 5 stars Shouting.......2001-06-28

Please could the previous reviewer learn to stop shouting (use lower case) as it's very hard to read. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars A BOOK FOR THOSE SEEKING TRUTH ABOUT JESUS.......1998-07-25

A VERY EXHAUSTIVE LOOK AT THE NAME OF JESUS FOUND ENCODED IN EQUIDISTANT LETTER AND WORD SEQUENCES, FOUND IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, WHICH CONFIRMS THAT THE NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES ARE JUST AS BELIEVABLE AND AUTHORITATIVE AS THE OLD TESTAMENT, SHOWING EVERYONE WHO READS THIS BOOK BY YACOV RAMBSEL THAT THE NEW TESTAMENT IS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT CONCEALED, AND THE OLD TESTAMENT IS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT REVEALED. WITH THE IMPOSSIBLE ODDS OF DIFFERENT AUTHORS ENCODING IN LIKE MANNER AND ENCODING FUTURE EVENTS, NAMES AND PLACES AND STILL MAINTAIN A READABLE SURFACE TEXT IS ASTRONOMICAL. THEY HAVE RECENTLY FOUND THE NAMES OF THE 12 DISCIPLES ENCODED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AS WELL. NOT EVEN A SUPER COMPUTOR COULD REPRODUCE WHAT HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH EQUIDISTANT LETTER AND WORD SEQUENCING IN THE TEXT OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, USING OF COURSE THE ORIGINAL HEBREW MANUSCRIPSTS. IF YOU ARE NOT CONVINCED THAT A SUPER, SUPER, SUPER INTELLIGENCE DICTATED WORD ! FOR WORD, LETTER BY LETTER, THE ENTIRE TENACH, IT'S BECAUSE YOU CHOOSE NOT TO BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A GOD NO MATTER HOW MUCH EVIDENCE IS PRESENTED. YOU HAVE THIS "DON'T CONFUSE ME WITH FACTS, I'VE ALREADY MADE UP MY MIND ATTITUDE". IT SHOWS BEYOND THE SHADOW OF ANY DOUBT THAT YESHUA IS HA MASHIACH, THAT JESUS IS THE MESSIAH, THE SON OF THE MOST HIGH GOD. AND IF YOU STILL HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT THIS FACT, THEN PRAY TO GOD AND ASK HIM WHETHER JESUS IS THE MESSIAH SPOKEN OF BY THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHETS, BUT ASK IN SINCERITY, AND HE WILL GLADY REVEAL THE TRUTH ABOUT JESUS OF NAZARETH TO YOU. READ THE BOOK!! IT IS WELL WORTH THE TIME, BUT TAKE TIME TO ABSORB EVERYTHING WRITTEN. THERE'S A LOT OF INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK, AND I GUARANTEE YOU. YOU'LL NOT BE THE SAME AGAIN AFTER READING THIS BOOK. READ IT WITH AN OPEN MIND, DETERMINED TO GET AS MUCH INFORMATION FROM IT'S PAGES AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE. HAPPY READING AND DISCOVERY.
