Remarkable storytelling.......2007-04-04
Crowley's eye for detail and depth is well seen in this story. Though the book version is difficult to find, it was orginially published in Conjunctions which is a Lit quarterly published by Bard College, which is where I first read it and fell in love with the elegant use of language that Crowley possesses.
What You Will.......2007-02-05
This is a poignant story about loss and the manner in which lost things become internalized, become part of our idea of heaven. Though that's a rather Wordsworthian theme, the content of the story deals with the interpretation of Shakespeare, specifically heresies like "Oxfordianism". This is the idea that the actor Shakespeare was a front, his works secretly written by the powerful nobleman Lord Oxford. Why would someone wish to believe such a thing? Crowley connects it with loss and need. The golden garden needs a golden God, and since it doesn't obviously have one, and doesn't obviously exist, it must all be secret. Things sufficiently secret can stay true no matter what the facts are.
Just a story, as the cover makes clear, but one that will stay with you.

Great book for monologues and lovers of Shakespeare!.......1999-04-22
This is a wonderful collection of stories/ monologues for young actors. It is very witty and charmingly put together. I recommend it for those who are eager to find a sense of humor in how Shakespeare is interpreted.
Book Description
"What does one wear to a proper seduction?"
Edwina groaned as she stared at her reflection in the tall gilded mirror. "And what now? I'm putting on the clothing simply to have it taken off."
And why would proper Lady Edwina Ross dress to seduce "London's Perfect Lover"? Because Prescott Devane, the notorious rogue, is the only one who can help the desperate lady with her scheme to catch a blackmailing fiend. Because no one else could play the role of a love–struck fiancé so convincingly. Because a faux engagement, secrets, the threat of scandal, and the promise of untapped passion are too tantalizing to ignore. Because, if the need arises, every woman should know what to wear to a seduction.

Enjoyable read with a few shortcomings........2006-05-31
This was my first Sari Robbins read and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a nice storyline and the characters were well-developed and likable. I liked that Edwina wasn't physically perfect, but capable of being desired all the same.
The love scenes were few and far between and a bit tame in my opinion. It was a sweet story that made for an interesting read.
Prescott was not my type of hero. He is haunted by his past, but he is generally an amiable, likable guy. I guess I just prefer the dark, brooding, tortured hero. Just a preference. ;)
3 1/2 stars.
excellent Regency romance .......2006-04-25
In 1811 London, Prescott Devane has vowed to never be an escort again after overhearing the Ton talk about him with disdain. As he recovers from injuring his hands rescuing a little girl who was on fire at the orphanage where he was raised, he is also mentally shook up because of the murder of his mentor Headmaster Dunn and his best friend at the orphanage who married someone else and kept it a secret from him that she was an aristocrat in hiding.
Widow Lady Edwina Ross tries to hire Prescott as a fianc? to help her catch an aristocratic blackmailer. He says no until she mentions she has business ties at the docks that could help his ventures so he agrees. Then he kisses her; both are shook by the reaction. At the same time Spymaster Tristan Wheaton asks his retired mentor Sir Lee to unmask Alexander Quince who is blackmailing the Ton apparently using information gathered from espionage circles. As the two cases converge, Prescott and Edwinna fall in love, but he knows she is too good for him.
The fine lead couple whose diverse background serves as a key ingredient in the plot makes this an excellent Regency romance as their relationship slowly grows once respect occurs. The solid support cast especially her peers at the Society for Enrichment & Learning for Females and those at the orphanage add depth to understanding Prescott and Edwinna respectively. Though the climax seems too easy, fans will enjoy Sari Robin's latest "Anderson Hall" tale (see ONE WICKED NIGHT and MORE THAN A SCANDAL).

So sad to see it go........2003-07-18
Star of the Guardians is one of the best sci-fi/fantasy series out there. For anyone who likes Star Wars, this takes it to another level. It is so sad to see that the books are out of print. These perenial classics need to be enjoyed by everyone!
Satisfying end of the Star of the Guardian series.......2000-05-17
Although Ghost Legion is not as spellbinding as the first three novels in het Star of the Guardian sage, it is indeed a satisfying end.
The young king Dion is bothered by two troubles: he is madly in love with Maigrey Kamil but caught up in an unloving marriage due to his formed alliance with warlord DiLuna and on the other hand his nephew Flaim claims the trone with help from his so-called ghostlegion.
There is another ghost around too...often around a dark and unforgiven brother.
I am Margaret Weis very thankfull for writing this novel, the ending of King's sacrifice was just so unfair it made me cry! And I never ever have cried while reading a book... Well, my soul is at rest now too, that is: untill I start to read the whole serie again (which I have done now for six times or so).
Thank you Margaret Weis!

So-so horror title.......2007-10-07
I came at this book from the angle of it being about zombies, my favorite horror archetype. This book does delivery zombies, in spades, but they are definitely not your typical zombie of movie and even book fame. Not a big deal, these are servants of an evil god type zombies, the ones that don't eat you but drag you to a place where their evil deity eats you. Potentially scarry stuff...nearly unspeakable, as the book states many a time, but not really.
I never read the other two titles that Geoffrey Caine wrote with Abraham Stroud in them but I don't feel that either are necessary for a reader to get the full flavor of this yarn. We have a main character who is a former military man, former cop, current archeologist and someone with a supernatural heritage who is brought in to deal with a mysterious buried ship in the middle of Manhattan. I won't go into the details of the buried ship inside a pyramid and the logistics of it-another review covers that, but suffice it to say there is a substantial amount of the book dedicated to examining the history of Etruscans and creating a whole mythology and culture for them that I did not find at all compelling or intriguing. That plus landing this ship conveniently in a place that will have enough living souls to sate its needs when it wakes back up.
I was mildly entertained by this story and found it easy to plow through. That is probably the most positive thing I can say about it. The dialogue was uneven at best, stilted and over dramatic in most places, with lots of !!! interjected in case you did not realize how dire the situation was. You get the idea of what the author is trying to convey but I get the sense that he did not try to imagine how any of it would sound coming out of his character's lips.
This is certainly not the stuff that legends are made of but if you need a few hours distraction and want a pulpy little story then feel free to take a look at this one. Perhaps the vampire or werewolf titles by this author are a bit more intriguing though.
Unbelievably Bad.......2006-05-26
This is the third book in the Abraham Stroud series. The first two books dealt with vampires (CURSE OF THE VAMPIRE) and werewolves (WAKE OF THE WEREWOLF). This one takes on the idea of zombies.
One of the main ways to make fiction work well is to get the non-fiction elements right. Don't have the Sun rising in the west, horses run hundreds of miles a day, or dinosaurs only one million years ago. This book fails at this task. A new skyscraper is being build in New York City. It is so tall that the construction has had to dig deeper than anyone has ever dug in Manhattan. They dig six-hundred feet down. New York's water pumping stations are nine-hundred feet down. At the bottom of the hole they hit the top of a pyramid. No mention is given as to how much further down the base of the pyramid is but it must be quite a ways. Once the pyramid is excavated it is found to contain an Etruscan ship. The author does mention that there has previously been no evidence of the Etruscans building ships but it is obviously Etruscan (no reason given). The ship itself contains five-million bodies.
O-kay, reality check time. We have a boat that has to be big enough to hold five-million bodies. Pretty big. Now put this huge ship inside a pyramid whose top is more than five-hundred feet below the surface. What sort of excavation was necessary to have buried all of this? No one in the book ever mentions it. Anyway, while trying to unravel the mystery of why there are five-million bodies on this ship we get walking dead and our heroes have to put a stop to it.
This reminds me most of the old Doc Savage stories where facts and common sense were completely unimportant. I really had a hard time getting through this book (I have no trouble finishing Doc Savage books) and was unable to read the other two books in the series. Bad bad bad. Considering Geoffrey Caine has also written under other names (Robert W. Walker, Evan Kingsbury, Stephen Robertson, Glen Hale) one finds it hard to believe he could put out something so bad while being so experienced. A mystery.
What a BARGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-13
First off I was at my local book store and was looking for a Zombie book to read and ran across this book. The cover had caught my eye and it sounded good, so I bought it for $1.50, and it looked NEW!!! What a deal!!! This is a EXPENSIVE book! So I began to read it and thought the begining was a little hard to follow, but the book started to flow. It starts because a land developer in N.Y.C. wants to built the "Highest" highrise building ever and while digging the footings (basement) of the building they find a 1000 year old ship buried(The ship is huge) and when they cut a hole into it all HELL brakes lose!!! After they open the ship up the book really takes off and is very good! I think if you like the zombie, monster horror you`ll like this book. If you can find it "BUY IT"!!!!
Great Horror Novel.......2003-09-02
This is the third horror novel from Author Geoffrey Caine. The other two were Curse of the Vampire and Wake of the Werewolf. All excellent books, especially werewolf. These are the only three books by Mr. Caine I could ever find and have had a verry hard time finding copies of any of these three books. Legion of the Dead takes place in a large city (New York I think) With the living dead overrunning the entire place. Great read. Scary fun
Thrilling and Unusual.......1997-06-18
I have only been able to find three books by this
author and absolutely loved every one. I want
more! Many, many more!

Much Better Than The Movie.......2007-09-16
I thought this book was much better than the movie that was put out. It was also 100 times better than the movie Exorcist: The Heretic. The books main character is the Lee J. Cobb character Detective Kinderman from the first book and movie. I thought the story was just chilling and it was pretty damn scarey. The whole story of the serial killer and his motives was just horrifying and when Kinderman confronts the man in the padded cell... just chilling. The book was so much better than the movie cause they didn't feel the need to have a forced exorcism just because they wanted to call the movie Exorcist III. And it was much more subtle which made it more scarey and more compelling.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Possessed by sequelitis.
Unfortunately, Legion is pretty much a classic example of the sequel being not too flash compared to the rather entertaining original. Or, to put it more plainly, you really do not need to read this, but keen fans that find it for next to nothing in a second hand shop might want to take a look to fill in some of the goings on surrounding the milieu of the first book, or for their collection. Quite avoidable, indeed.
A Great - And Sometimes Neglected - Piece Of The Exorcist Mythos.......2007-05-07
"The Exorcist III: Legion" brings back Lieutenant Kinderman - the detective from the original "Exorcist" - and this time makes him the central character of this new story. Father Dyer - Father Karras's friend from the first one - is also back.
Kinderman may not have encountered anything like the Regan events in the years since the original novel, but he's been active on the force investigating homicides and all the other, more mundane, evils that go on. Now there's something extraordinary happening again. A series of unusually vicious murders are rocking the city, but they're the work of the Gemini killer - a murderer who's been dead for twelve years. They have all the trademark signs and fit all the patterns, including the stuff the police never let out to the general public. At first there is, of course, the obvious possibility that someone knows all the secret parts of the Gemini's modus operandi - a previously unknown associate? - and is copycatting the crimes, but as the book progresses the police know and the readers know that it's not that simple.
This novel is not afraid to follow a non-direct path. It veers off at times and devotes a lot of detail to aspects of the story and the characters, that a novel would usually skip over. But these are strengths, not weaknesses, in my opinion. The dialogue takes on a rich life all its own; the internal philosophising and mental processes of the characters - Kinderman in particular are fascinating; the police proceedurual work is intriguing and the sudden appearances of logically impossible hints that proceedural work uncovers at the least expected times is believable and eerie. The secrets, when revealed, are of that glorious type that you never see coming but wonder how you could have possibly missed it. A great horror novel, and a great mystery novel.
"Legion, for we are many".......2007-03-17
Having read Blatty's other major works, I was nervous about this book because of the negative reviews. Reviews would lead readers to believe this work of fiction is a failure. However, it tends to be difficult to follow up a blockbuster book and movie. While the plot seemed to get lost in philosophy at times, the story moves at good pace. It compares favorably with Blatty's other works.
Legion is not a pure sequel to The Exorcist. Many publications have stated that the killer is loosely based on the Zodiac killer. The only real similarity is the affinity for zodiac symbols. I went into this book expecting a serial killer only to find a previous villan to appear in a very unexpected form. Medical science seems to exploited at the expense of our villan with the practicianers as the puppets in this lethal war.
The twists in this book are difficult to anticipate at times, and they do not feel like they are written into the story for the sake of having a plot twist. Blatty is successful in making the reader feel uneasy in this well thought out thriller. I only wish Blatty had more works in mass publication because he is such a gifted storyteller.
Legion by William Peter Blatty.......2007-01-09
It was a good read. Not great, but good. The main character was the police lt. that was in the first story, and the movie. I love him.

Book Description
In this tale set during the War for Independence, two intriguing stories emerge. One is of a black freedman, Stuart Brodie. On his return from the war, he finds his brother lynched and his tavern in the backcountry of South Carolina burnt to the ground. Knowing that the guilty party was allied with the Colonial Patriots, he joins the British Army to exact his revenge. The other story is of an abused wife, Marty, who is raped by her husband and his friend and left to recover alone. While dressed in men's clothing she is mistaken for a man and promptly uses this to her advantage to join the Colonial forces. Meanwhile, the Patriots are gathering backcountry fighters for an open confrontation with the British troops under Major Patrick Ferguson. This Ghost Legion is growing steadily, and because the British do not believe the legion exists or refuse to acknowledge their strength, the end result might be a bloody conflict.
Johnny D. Boggs is a South Carolina native, who lives in New Mexico with his wife and son. His next Five Star Western will be Walk Proud, Stand Tall.

minor zombie novel.......2004-02-12
This is as much a political novel about the attempt to overthrow the dictatorship of a Caribbean country as it is a novel about zombies and voodoo. An American writer visiting the country of San Marlo becomes caught up in a revolutionary movement to overthrown the repressive government, which carries out killings and kidnappings with the help of a zombie army. While it is a decent read, there really aren't enough details about politics or voodoo to make this novel special. Recommended for those who don't like their horror novels with gallons of gore.
For zombie completists only.......2004-02-08
Before zombies were known to be flesh-eaters, the were more commonly associated with voodoo. In this classic pulp schlocker from l979, slow-moving "voodoo" zombies attack a crew with machetes. Hugh Cave throws in an offbeat political sub-plot which seems weird even in this underground yarn. For die-hard zombie completists only!

What makes this book so remarkable is the consistent clarity, power and insight of the selections, and the wide-ranging, non-sectarian quality of the quotations chosen.

Possibly a Good Start.......2007-08-06
Unfortunately I found quotes repeated in this book, some of the quotes seemed forced into a category, and many individuals e.g. Peace Pilgrim, were given preferential treatment due to the author's bias. Given the amount of quote resources available on the internet I am not that enthused about the purchase of this book, but I will maintain an average rating because the book did open the door for me to do additional research and find many authors I had not known before.
Huge effort, and yet weak in content.......2007-03-01
I sincerely appreciate this authors effort to compile such an extensive collection of quotes. Personally, I did not find that it fulfilled the implication of the title. Sometimes quantity of words does not mean quality of information. Maybe others will find more in this book than I did.
Truly a Treasure.......2005-08-14
I've had my copy for years now and every time I come across it and start flipping through the pages I become immersed for hours. This inspiring book has thousands of thought provoking, spiritual quotations collected from all through the ages and from all over the world. I usually let friends borrow my books or I sell or give them away. I rarely keep many. But this one is never far away from me and is never going anywhere! Very much worth your money, you won't regret it. I'm certain you'll cherish yours as much as I do mine.
If you are looking for a spiritual quote..........2002-11-20
This book has been extremely helpful to me in my search for the profound sprititual quotes. The list goes on from Socrates to Papa Ramdas. From Christian to Sufi to Hindu to Buddhist - no one is left out. From the ancient to the modern thinker, guru, guide and teacher. Some of the quotes come from people I've never heard of. Who are these people?? The quotes are listed in categories such as Cause/Effect, Mind, Meditation, Love, etc.
Best book of Quotations from multiple Spiritual Sources.......2001-04-11
This is the best book on spiritual and inspirational quotations which includes multiple faiths. There's the massive Catholic Quotations, Burton Stephenson's Bible Quotations, Mead's Bible Quotations, Quotation books from the Bahai, Hindu and Buddhist faiths, but this one does the best job of blending together spiritual sources and literary sources on spiritual topics from the broadest range.
Not only that, it covers a wide range of topics that not all might call spiritual, and I think this is good. Like the Buddhist saying goes, after enlightenment you still chop wood and carry water.
This is a subject categorized book, which makes it fun to read and easier to use for source material for lecture or writing projects. Or, just put it in your bathroom and get inspired a few column inches at a time.
It's a big book, with 10,000+ quotes, so there is a lot of great material, much of it unique.
I've always felt that one of the best things about quotation books are the authors and books they introduce you to, so you can pursue them in greater depth. If you like to read spiritual material, this book is a like a chocolate sampler loaded with tasty goodies which will help you learn what new flavors to further pursue.
