Book Description
Eight spooky stories from the mistress of the unexpected.
"I aim to startle as well as please," Muriel Spark has said, and in these eight marvelous ghost stories she manages to do both to the highest degree. As with all matters in the hands of Dame Muriel her spooks are entirely original. A ghost in her pantheon can be plaintive or a bit vengeful, or perhaps may not even be aware of being a ghost at all. One in fact is the ghost of a man who isn't even dead yet. Another takes the bus home from work, believing she is still alive, though she is haunted by an odious tune stuck in her head (which her murderer had been relentlessly humming), and distressed by a "feeling of incompletion." And a reflective ghost recalls her mortal days of enjoying "the glory of the world, as if it would never pass."
Spark has a flair for confiding ghosts: "I must explain that I departed this life nearly five years ago. But I did not altogether depart this world. There were those odd things still to be done which one's executors can never do properly." In her case the odd things include cheerily hailing her murderer, "Hallo George!" and driving him mad.
The remarkably nonchalant stories here include some of her most wicked and famous"The Seraph and the Zambesi," "The Hanging Judge," and "The Portobello Road"and they all gleam with that special Spark sheen, the quality The Times Literary Supplement has hailed as "gloriously witty and polished."

Book Description
Despite its graceful beauty, Winterset remains shrouded in the mystery of its dark past. . .
Ever Since Anna Holcombe inexplicably refused his proposal, Reed Moreland has been unable to set foot in the home that was the backdrop to their romance--Winterset. The eerie beauty of the Gloucestershire mansion and the mystery that surrounds it have always captivated him, and he can neither continue living in the house nor give it up completely despite the painful memories it stirs in his heart.
But when Reed begins having his troubling dreams about Anna being in danger, he puts his heartbreak and bitterness aside and directs his carriage back to Winterset, determined to protect the woman he cannot stop loving. Once again passion flares between them, but the murder of a servant girl draws them deep in to the foreboding, deadly legends of Winterset. . .and a destiny neither Anna nor Reed can escape.
Customer Reviews:
ok read, just not up to the previous books in this series.......2004-12-19
Being a big fan of Candace Camp I was a bit disappointed in this novel following along with Reed of the "mad" Morelands. I believe Anna's character was a bit too forceful and yet on the complete opposite was Reed's character. While male 'feelings' are applausible, his heart on the sleeve and begging left me thinking what a wimp. I would have like the hero if he didn't grovel so much for any affection from Anna, did he have no pride? The story itself was interesting and given society's views on mental illness, believable. Looking forward to the next Moreland's story.
It's Cold Outside, Curl Up With Winterset.......2004-11-14
What do you think of when someone says the word, "Gothic?"
Do you think of moody moors, craggy trees, moonless nights, crumbling old manor homes? Does your pulse race a bit?
IF you define gothic as moody, haunted, thrilling, and a bit frightening, you want to read Winterset. Candace Camp is a wonderful writer. Her stories never disappoint me, her characters always entertain me. Winterset has a good plot and the characters provided a good reed (pun intended).
I know some reviewers might feel there wasn't enough romance in Winterset (which is a subjective thing. Frankly, there was plenty of romance for me. Enough to make me root for the characters, but not so much that it was just one big "suck face fest."
I particularly liked the Uncle Charles character - with his unsettling madness.
WARNING: SPOILER COMING
My only negatives were:
1. Mrs. Bennett's speech and behavior (and even her name) was right out of a Jane Austen novel. She seemed too pat, too to type.
2. The ending bummed me out. I know it is a romance and everything had to be tied up neatly, with a pretty little bow. Frankly, though, I would have preferred it if Anna truly was related to mad people. I would have liked the hero to make a declaration that he would love her through sanity and madness, and society be damned. The author's ending seemed a bit too convienent, a way to appease the superficial romance readers who would not like a heroine from a mad family. That's sad to me. I say, let her be from stark raving lunatics. It makes her more sympathetic and her achievements greater.
My first Camp novel - not so much romance as suspense.......2004-11-06
As I said above, this is my first novel by Candace Camp. Having read wuch wonderful reviews on here I thought I would pick it up. It is a nice novel...I did like the main characters very much and it was unique. In general I tend to like novels with more dialogue than this, but Candace Camp writes so well and I barely noticed!
My one real issue with the novel is that there is much more suspense, in my opinion, than romance. The following may be a spoiler for some but in a novel that is just over 400 pages, the actual "encounter" did not occur until after page 375. Like I said, it was a good read, but nothing out of the ordinary. I do think I will read some of her previous works beacuse it appears that authors usually move towards suspense from romance, so some earlier works are probably a little bit mroe romantic. Authors I like are Gaelen Foley, Lisa Kleypas, Judith McNaught and Iris Johansen.
a good read.......2004-10-18
The third in a series featuring the Moreland siblings who all seem to have some mystical abilities, "Winteset" is Reed Moreland's (the younger son of the duke) story. Three years before the story proper begins, Reed Moreland, bought the Winterset estate in Gloucestershire, with the thought of settling down there. And he fell completely in love with the beautiful Miss Anna Holcombe (her maternal relatives used to own Winterset), and believed completely that she returned his feelings. So that he was quite shattered when she, with great firmness, rejected his offer of marriage. Leaving Gloucestershire and vowing never to return, Reed has laboured valiantly to forget Anna, but with little success. And when, in the beginning pages of the novel, has a nightmare that Anna is danger of her life, he decides to leave for Winterset in order to keep an eye on Anna. But how to cope with seeing Anna everyday and not allow the anger, bitterness and absolute love he has for her cloud his judgement? And then one of the female servants who works for the Halcombes goes missing and is found brutally murdered in a manner reminiscent of a couple of unsolved murders committed 50 years ago. Then people whispered that the Winterset Beast (part human, part wolf) was responsible for the murders that took place in the neighbourhood. Is the Beast responsible for this current murder? Or is the murderer only all too mortal as Reed suspects? Fearing for Anna's safety, Reed vows to discover who this mad murderer is, and to protect the lady he loves in spite of her seeming indifference to him...
"Winterset" is a nice little gothicky romance novel that proved to be a rather absorbing read. The author did a very good job in portraying all the angst that both Reed and Anna feel, as well as the simmering passion that they feel for each other. The "gothicky" subplot dealing with the dark secrets in Anna's family and the murders that plague the village was rather well done too. My only reservations came from two factors: 1) the language: I understand that many authors feel that writing in an old fashioned manner may seem anachronistic. But surely there is no need to make the characters sound so very, very 20th century American either? And 2) I couldn't help but feel that the inclusion of Reed's sister, Kyria (featured in "Beyond Compare"), and his twin younger brothers hampered the smooth flow and tightness of the storyline. There was so much happening anyway so that even though it was nice to know that Kyria was very happily married now with a child of her own, I really didn't think that she was all that vital to the story at hand, and actually got in the way. All in all though, "Winterset" was an enjoyable and absorbing read.
entertaining romantic suspense .......2004-09-29
Because of the otherworldly phenomena that impacted his sisters, Reed Moreland worries about Anna Holcomb, who has visions. Though she rejected his attempts to court her, he decides to return to WINTERSET to insure she is okay because he believes she is in trouble.
Anna is stunned to see the man she love return to her as she was positive he would never come back for her let alone try to keep her safe. She never told him that she loved him and still does. Ending their relationship was for his sake as she believes madness flows through her veins. That is why she and her brother Kit vow to never marry. However, Reed risks his life to keep Anna safe as the Beast is killing anyone associated with the Holcombs.
This entertaining romantic suspense feels somewhat like a gothic tale, but what hooks readers is whether The Beast has supernatural skills. The heroine is an interesting protagonist who loves Reed, but wants him out of her life for fear of his safety. Her pact with her sibling to end the gene pool with them will touch the audience. Fans will appreciate this tense thriller while wondering if the seemingly paranormal is real or not.

My Favorite Cookbook.......2005-09-09
My Father in Law got this for me several years ago. I love the recipes and the stories. Whenever I'm craving something that "mom used to make" I can usually thumb through this book and find it, along with a couple of other things I'd like to try. Lots of old-fashioned, home cookin' recipes. Most ingredients are things that are kept on hand or easy to find.
Typical local cookbook.......2002-03-16
This cookbook is pretty much exactly the same as any other charity cookbook you can get in any rural area. It's a collection of mostly country style recipes that were submitted by residents of Madison County, Iowa. Of course, the fascination with the bestselling novel "Bridges of Madison County" explains why this particular local cookbook was released nationally. As such, the cookbook is fine, and there are a number of stories included that some people might find interesting (again submitted by local residents).
The main fault of the cookbook is the lack of standardization across recipes, leading to recipes that are sometimes vague. For example, one recipe may call for "1 can of tomato juice," but not specify what size can to use. Many of the casserole recipes are especially vague; for example, indicating that one should "cook one chicken," but not explaining how the chicken should be cooked. This cookbook would probably make a nice gift for persons who like country style food and who already know quite a bit about how to cook in this manner. Others beware.
Fasinating.......2002-03-07
My daughter gave me this book & I in turn am buying it for 2 sister in laws...It is that good. The homespun stories in it are just as good as the recipes it has. I have done numerous recipes from this book & they have all been great!! My only problem with this book is I get sidetracked reading the stories...
Tried and true recipes of the heart !.......2000-01-14
I found this cookbook to be a wonderful addition to my cookbook library. With its downhome recipes that include ingredients that you usually have on hand, it is a joy to use. The illustrations that are included give the book a folksy feeling. The short stories give us an insight into true family life. This cookbook is a must for anyone who likes to cook for the family. They are sure to enjoy the results!
Simple,homey and everybodies favorite recipes.......1999-01-14
This cookbook was a Christmas gift from my best friend. She had bought it and knew that I would love it, too. These recipes are so simple to make with ingredients that you have in your pantry or refrigerator now. Lots of dishes you have always wanted to be able to prepare for your family and friends. Plus lovely Holiday memories.

Excellent edition, highly recommended.
This edition includes the Hard to find out of print "Empire's End"
Good read for a serious fan.......2006-12-27
Although the overall plot is fantastic, the artwork and dialog leaves something to be desired. If you're a fan it's almost a must have just to continue on with what's going on in the Star Wars Universe, just don't expect Jim Lee quality artwork or Frank Miller level writing. The story itself is pretty good, I just felt it lacked in some important areas and could have been much better with too many battles that are over in two or three panels.
Excellent Chapter in the Star Wars Extpanded Universe.......2006-10-02
This chapter of the Star Wars Universe takes place six years after the events on Endor (the events in the Return of the Jedi film). Luke has just recovered from being led by the Emperor and turning to the dark side himself.
This series of books (Dark Empire I, II, and Empire's End) has been widely received by many who follow the Expanded Universe. Events in future books are shaped greatly by what occurs in these books, namely restarting the Jedi Academy on Yavin.
Now, for the first time, Empire's End is included with this re-release of the comic by Dark Horse. This set of both books is a Must Have for any Star Wars fan.

Customer Reviews:
In the Words of Borat... "Very NIIIIIICE".......2007-07-11
Considering it's a story from the Dark Horse Comic Book, I was very impressed. Made me feel like I was listening to one of those old time radio shows. Sound Effects and voice acting were all great! Some of the visuals you get in your head from listening don't match what's really going on, but that's one of the joys of building the picture with your minds eye. All and All, if you're a star wars fan and just want a good relaxing story to listen to... there you go!
Put the tape down and back away slowly...Again.......2005-05-12
This review covers the audio cassette book (2 tapes, 2.5 hours). Okay, I should have known better from the previous book, but I am a glutton for punishment. Again, good audio, great special effects, excellent music score. Lousy story line. The only value I found with this book is that it explains a few of the things that happen between the Thrawn series and the Jedi Acadamy series. I was probably mistaken in my last review about the over-editing, this just appears to be so-so writing. Choppy story line, poor plot. Overly powerful jedi, under powered dark-jedi (rediculous is the word I was thinking). Two-second love interest...no, really! Talk about your flash in the pan! Consider carefully before buying this audio book!
Oh No! The clone had a clone!.......2004-07-19
The clone emperor cloned himself and Luke must stop him again. This is the sequel to Dark Empire and is very entertaining. There is a Dark Empire III, but you can skip that one. Dark Empire II is worth a listen.
Dark Empire and Dark Empire II take place Six years after the Battle of Endor, (but after the Zahn trilogy). Luke discovers that the emperor is still alive. Luke researches whether a jedi has ever returned from the dark side. This is cool, because this acknowledged the earlier comics dealing with the jedi and sith 3,000 to 5,000 years ago (learned in the holocron's that Luke has gathered.)
This is the description of the comic which the audio tape is based on.
Not bad for a pair of smugglers...er, comic book artists...........2003-10-11
The struggle for mastery of the galaxy continues in this second installment of Dark Horse's Dark Empire graphic novel series. Although Leia Organa Solo and her twin brother Luke Skywalker defeated the clone of Emperor Palpatine, his minions, led by Warlord Sedriss, continue their campaign to wrest star systems away from the New Republic and back into the Imperial fold.
Even worse, the spirit-force of Palpatine still resonates even though it is disembodied, and although rebellious members of his own court have destroyed more of his clone bodies all the Emperor needs is one in which to take physical form. Knowing that he will really die forever without another body to inhabit, Palpatine sets his sights on Leia's third child, Anakin Solo. If he succeeds, Palpatine will achieve two of his most cherished goals: continued survival and revenge upon the man who betrayed him at Endor, Darth Vader.
Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy return to dazzle Star Wars aficionados with their story and artwork in Dark Empire II. As in the best Expanded Universe novels, this creative team mixes classic Star Wars characters from the movies and meld them with a cast of new friends and foes, while enriching the "galaxy far, far away" with new worlds and exotic aliens. They even follow the trilogy's structure by making Dark Empire II a cliffhanger, making sure we readers looked forward to the concluding installment, Empire's End.
Oh boy, he's at it again!.......2002-11-24
To put in bluntly, this sequel has mostly the exact same plot as it's predecessor.
The Emperor returns from the dead, again...he has a superweapon, again...and he is out to blow people up...again.
In that sense, this book is actually something like the prototype sequel. It takes everything readers liked about the original, and provides us with more of it without bringing in anything really new.
Of course the writers did bother to invent some new ships, characters, weapons and sofort, but nothing that really adds to the story. It is just more of the same stuff we got from Dark Empire I.
In addition to this, one of the major drawbacks to this comic is the fact that a lot of the new things the artists DO come up with are kind of ridiculous. I mean, which Evil Emperor would give his new superweapon a name like "the Galaxy Gun"? And how come the Emperor can magically turn any random underling into a powerfull Dark Jedi all of a sudden? If he could do that, why did he bother with Luke in the last book?
If you were one of the people who enjoyed Dark Empire I, and you insist on reading more of the exact same thing, then you might want to buy this book. If you didn't like the original, you're certainly not going to like this one either.
The only other people who might wish to bother with this comic are the vivid Boba Fett-fans. Like all other villians from DE I, he returns in this one AND he has a lot more screentime than he did in the last book.

This book is not a preaching manual or a homiletics textbook. Get "Christ-Centered Preaching" by Brian Chappell if that is what you are looking for. Instead, it is a reminder that God uses a variety of people and a variety of styles to advance His Kingdom. When I first started out preaching ten years ago, I spent a lot of time trying to sound like other preachers. This book shows us that it is pointless to do so and ultimately unnecessary. God can use the communication style He created in us to begin with.
These communicators have just a few things in common: they love God and work diligently to make Him known. Their styles, however, couldn't be more different and that is ultimately very encouraging. Drop the cash on this one. It's a winner.
A must read for preachers.......2004-12-30
What an excellent book! Dave doesn't come over as "preachy" and doesn't force a certain style upon you. When reading about my preaching style, I could only shake my head and say, "Wow! This is me. He is describing me." The interviews, tips and cautions are helpful. His book wil add zest to my preaching now that I am aware of the few tiny changes I need to make in my style of preaching, and he has challenged me to experiment more with other styles that I would feel comfortable with.

As a minister, without a normal preaching background, this book really is a Godsend. While reinforcing your personal style, with gems from some of the greatest communicators alive today, it also gives a glimpse into other styles that can be unbelievable tools in ministry. Chapters are well constructed to get more out of them. I especially liked the points of caution at the end of the chapters for each style. The CD is also a wonderful resource. A great and useful read for anyone who will ever speak in public!
