Book Description
From the author of the international bestseller Tully comes an epic tale of passion, betrayal, and survival in World War II Russia. Leningrad, 1941: The European war seems far away in this city of fallen grandeur, where splendid palaces and stately boulevards speak of a different age, when the city was known as St. Petersburg. Now two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanov, live in a cramped apartment, sharing one room with their brother and parents. Such are the harsh realities of Stalin's Russia, but when Hitler invades the country, the siege of its cities makes the previous severe conditions seem luxurious.
Against this backdrop of danger and uncertainty, Tatiana meets Alexander, an officer in the Red Army whose self-confidence sets him apart from most Russian men and helps to conceal a mysterious and troubled past.
Once the relentless winter and the German army's blockade take hold of the city, the Metanovs are forced into ever more desperate measures to survive. With bombs falling and food becoming scarce, Tatiana and Alexander are drawn to each other in an impossible love that threatens to tear her family apart and reveal his dangerous secret -- a secret as destructive as the war itself. Caught between two deadly forces, the lovers find themselves swept up in a tide of history at a turning point in the century that made the modern world.
Mesmerizing from the very first page to the final, breathtaking end, The Bronze Horseman brings alive the story of two indomitable, heroic spirits and their great love that triumphs over the devastation of a country at war.

The best book ever!.......2007-07-19
I cant not express how much I love this book. I have read this book at least six times. I also begged my friend to try it and she also fell in love with it. Paullina simons manages to pull you in and you feel like your right there with the characters. She has made the "perfect man" in Alexander and their love story is amazing...all the stuggles they go through is heartbreaking. I don't want to give away the story but this is a must read!!!
GREAT!!!!.......2007-05-15
I loved this book. I had a friend recommend it to me. I could not put it down. I was dissappointed at the ending until I read the reviews saying there is a sequel, now I can't wait to get that book.
LOVED IT.......2007-03-09
I really loved this book. I could not put it down. At first, do not be intimidated by the Russian Cities and names. It is a page turner. One of those books you think about for days after you read it... like the events really happened and you dwell on them. What is even better is the sequel "Tatiana & Alexander".
Loved this amazing story!!.......2007-03-01
This book is truly one of a kind. I couldn't put it down! Also, just wanted to let everyone know there is a sequel to this called Tatiana and Alexander.
The Bronze Horseman.......2007-01-11
This book you could not put down and I read it every free minute I had. It was a cliff hanger of sorts with plenty of detail that was necessary and not boring. It made you stop to realize how lucky we are to be in the USA with freedoms unknown to those in Communist countries. It was a romantic, historical, passionate book well told that will make you cry toward the end of this book. I ordered "Tatiana and Alexander " and can't wait to read on. The next book is patiently awaited called " The Summer Garden ".

Compelling Story - Abrupt Ending.......2005-01-05
The story of Mary and Val was fascinating and really pulled me in - I didn't want to put the book down. But after establishing these memorable characters and weaving this engaging narrative, the author suddenly drops the story and walks away. Come on Ms. Ripley, after living through Mary's trials and triumphs, don't your loyal readers deserve at least a one-page epilogue?
This novel is a true gem.......2003-11-06
This is one of my two favorite Alexandra Ripley books (the other is "Charleston", I can't decide which is better.) Set in the beautiful and exotic New Orleans, the novel tells us the story about a girl who after the death of her father is left alone in the world, learns to stand on her own, and while gets in touch with all the social classes of the city, she overcomes the difficulties and injustices she faces and finds her family and love. Although at first I didn't understand how could she love Valmont Saint-Brevin after all he had done to her, later it turned out that he is still worthy of loving (I won't post a spoiler here but he does a very brave thing that is unusual in the "southern romance" books which follow in the footsteps of "Gone With The Wind" in almost idolizing slavery.) Also, his suffering from yellow fever was a good example of poetic justice. :)
Don't let the cover of the book deceive you, this is not the kind of stupid Jennifer Blake novels. This is a historical novel done on the scale of "Gone With The Wind" and "Charleston" but more realistic (it doesn't suggest that slaves were happy under their masters' rule). I loved this book the very moment I began to read it. I kept on getting bad grades in school that week :)
New Orleans History........2002-11-26
I love New Orleans, and I love historical novels, so this book was tailor-made for my tastes. I enjoyed the book. The heroine is wonderful, and her quest for her identity and her past is really gripping. It's a long book, but it doesn't seem so as you read through it. That's the test of a good book - can it take you out of yourself so you don't even realize what's going on? This one does that.
What a Great Book!.......2001-05-04
This book is really good. It's long, but I was so interested that I read it in about a week (while I took college courses as well). The main character, Mary, is a true heroine, she's not this silly love-starved, look-for-a-husband-type that's usually found in historical romance/fiction novels. You know it was a good book when a month later you think to yourself "now, who was it that..." and you realize it was a character from a book. Discriptions of N'arlings are great, too. Compleate with banquettes, coffee, and banyaes (sp?). Now I can understand why Ripley was chosen to write the sequal to "Gone With the Wind." If you like epic type historical romances, you'll like this book!
A true New Orleans Legacy.......2001-03-07
History, love and adventure are held within the covers of New Orleans Legacy by Alexandra Ripley. She combines her talent for fiction writing and the history of one of the nation's most mysterious cities to entertain. Imagine being a 16-year-old girl without a family and only a small box filled with various family heirlooms as a link to the past. After graduating from a convent school, and learning of her father's death, Mary MacAlister sets out to learn about her family and heritage. Her quest for knowledge leads her to New Orleans where she meets an array of characters ranging from a madam to a plantation owner to a Voodoo queen. Her adventures and troubles start on her journey down the Mississippi. She encounters illness, trickery and loneliness. But there are good times too. Mary becomes part of a family, independent and a heroine to many. And of course there is romance. Mary learns that sometimes a man's intentions are not all that innocent and love is not all that easy. Mary MacAlister's story is not the only great thing about this book. Ripley researched the history of New Orleans and its people to be able to honestly depict the city. At the end of the book she places a disclaimer about one inaccuracy. Ripley's portrayal of New Orleans, the people and the history is superior to any other. New Orleans Legacy is for anyone who wants to curl up and get lost in a good book.

Great Soulfull Writing - A Love Letter to NOLA Music.......2004-09-27
This is a wonderful book full of great writing and great photos. The author has done a lot of footwork covering the subject. I tell all my Cresent City Music Loving Friends to get this book. It will be very hard for other authors to come behind this book and cover the same subject. Get this book for yourself - but don't lend it out - it won't come back.
A labor of love.......2002-05-16
This book gets five stars.
But Jeff really needs to get someone to copyread this text. Not to pick nits, but some words are mispelled and some teeny weeny inaccurate details might tend to take Hannusch's hard work and clear dedication to the subject matter with an unnecessary grain of salt.
Okay, enough of that. The fact is, if it weren't for what happened musically in New Orleans, we'd all very likely be listening to something else right now and not having as much fun. And if Jeff Hannusch hadn't taken the time to research and write up the history of New Orleans rhythm and blues, it might never have been done. Five stars, Jeff. Hire a copyreader for the next edition and this book will sparkle more than it does already.

Book Description
MargarethaÕs Trunk is a fast-paced nostalgic read, whose power lies in its non-fictional characters as they live their everyday lives in New Orleans, the second largest city in America, in the summer of 1847.
The mystery surrounding the family will make you wonder Òwhat ifÓ when you encounter the real as well as the fictional characters who tell the story. You will think of the kindly Herr Holzer with real affection and the pragmatic Frau Henning with a shake of the head. You will recognize the novice Frances, a nun going about her errand of mercy. You will look at every street vendor to see if he is Juan.
As inhabitants did a century or more ago, you may walk down the banquette, hear the church chimes calling the faithful to mass, stroll through the Places des Armes, observe the neutral grounds without recognition of their significance, and understand French without speaking it when you call the streets by name or order food from a menu.
The Henke called Feldkemper family, as immigrants, swelled the population of New Orleans to more than 200,000 souls in the 1850s, just like your ancestors flooded over time into AmericaÕs cities. Reading MargarethaÕs Trunk, you will feel an undeniable kinship.

Humanity Under Stress.......2006-12-09
The Menace From Earth (1959) is a short story collection. These works were published in various magazines between 1941 and 1957.
The Year of the Jackpot concerns cyclic patterns in human beings and stars. By His Bootstraps is the classic time travel story nonpareil. Columbus Was a Dope shows the attitudes of those who go to the stars and those who disparage the whole idea, with a zinger for an ending. The Menace From Earth depicts a young couple on the Moon and a tourist who drops in for a visit.
Sky Light tells of the costs of spaceflight and human perseverance. Goldfish Bowl is about the reactions of a Naval Captain upon encountering an advanced race. Project Nightmare portrays the difficulties of defending the country using paranormal talents. Water Is for Washing accounts the trials of a hydrophobe when the sea reclaims the Imperial Valley.
These stories are about people in unusual situations and their responses to trying conditions. They demonstrate the differences between Golden Age Science Fiction and its predecessors. They are also quite entertaining.
While these stories are not equally strong, all display certain themes that return in his future works. Especially in the title story, which foreshadows Podkayne of Mars, Friday and other stories with strong female protagonists. The author was among the first SF authors to deal sympathetically with female characters, probably due to the example of his wife Virginia.
Highly recommended for Heinlein fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of strange situations, compassion, and perseverance.
-Arthur W. Jordin
Great basic SciFi.......2006-06-19
This is a great collection of basic Heinlein SciFi. The title story is about basic jealousy surrounded by miscommunication and the physics of living on the moon. The other stories explore similar kinds of territory. Recommended for exploring concepts of the future and odd bits of probability.
Great collection of stories.......2005-12-20
In "The Year of the Jackpot", a statistician graphs the points of convergence
of cyclycal events. Overlapping his graphs, he notices that the
wavy lines are approaching extremes. Interesting times.
The story "By His Bootstraps" is not logically sound: How did Bob Wilson
get to the other side of the Gate so that he could operate the Gate before
sending for the first version of himself?
"The Menace From Earth" tackles Earth Moon female jealousy.
"Sky Lift" details the heroism of a rocket pilot carying an antidote to the
Pluto colony. "Goldfish Bowl" asks: What if humans were kept as pets by
disinterested intelligent beings? "Project Nightmare" is about
Psionic humans who are able to locate nuclear devices and prevent atomic
fusion -- using psi ability. "Water is for Washing" is about a mega
earthquake that creates a new sea between the Pacific Plate and the
North American Plate. The Gulf of California extends to Los Angeles.
Lyrical Science Fiction.......2005-08-07
I grew up inspired by Science Fiction, and eventually had the privilege of working on the Space Shuttle program for several years. Of all the many SF stories I have read, The Menace From Earth has always been one of my favorites. There are other stories more technically inspiring, or with better drawn characters. There is none that conveys the sense of humans fitting in to a non-earth environment and making it their home with such ease and inspiration. When the flying starts, the story becomes simply lyrical.
Vintage Heinlein.......2004-08-07
To me, "The Menace from Earth" is the book that sealed Robert Heinlein's place as the greatest science fiction author of all times. This little collection, considered to be one of his minor works, packs more creativity than most authors display in their entire career. For instance, in the story "Goldfish Bowl" Heinlein completely reinvents the human race's role on planet Earth, to quite scary effect. That's one that you won't stop thinking about anytime soon once you've read it.
In "By his Bootstraps" we read about a fellow who gets caught in a mysterious series of events involving other versions of himself time-traveling from the future. Contrary to some claims, Heinlein did not actually invent this concpet. What he does do here is to cook up an incredibly inventive, clever, and humorous plot for the story. He does a particularly good job handling the psychologoical state of the narrator as the stream of bizarre revelations comes in.
While the other stories may not break your head quite as totally as those two, they are all memorable. "Water is for Washing", the closing entry, has some quite memorable imagery. So, for that matter, does "The Menace from Earth", a tale of teenage angst and ambition on the Moon. Overall, I give this collection of stories a hearty recommendation.

A Muslim Revert to Christ responds!.......2006-01-08
This is an interesting book. Lang is sincere, no doubt. I found the usual missionary work from Islam to be quite bold and strategic in scope. The Muslim may use Ahmad Deedat's (he died last year having suffered from a stroke after attacking Christ- May God have mercy on his soul) many effective books to confuse the Christian who may not have had a good chance to research difficult topics like the Trinity (a favorite subject for Muslims to attack using it as mathematical formula to refute Christianity!). Coming from Islam, I found the Lord in the Qoran itself. I too struggled for a long time but discovered that Jesus is the Spirit of Allah, His prophet and His Word. If Allah had created His Word and His Spirit then there was something wrong with divinity itself for God could never be without His Word and Spirit.-
This comes from the Qoran:
"[4:171] ...... Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him...".
Jesus saves. The Qoran is a revised Syriac apocryphal series of Ebionite and other heretical writings predating Islam. Even its title Qoran comes from Aramaic, which means Qorowo or sermon in a Church...
Say (0 Muhammad): "He is Allah, (the) One. Allah AsSamad (The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks). He begets not, nor was He begotten; and there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him." Ikhlaas 112: 1-4
AsSamad is a plurality from Hebrew and NOT Arabic. Here it is again God is one God is a Triune God.. Samado in Hebrew means a plurality usually 3.
Helpful.......2005-11-17
I read this book as well as Lang's "Even Angels Ask" after a Muslim girl I was seeing bought them for me. (In order to continue the relationship, I would have had to convert to Islam which I was open to and considered.) I read these books with the hope that it would provide some insight on what it was like to be an American convert as well as deal with some of the troubling aspects of Islam that, due to my cultural upbringing, I had problems with. On the first point, Lang delivered and provided some honest insights on the difficulties he had in becoming part of the Muslim community. I found these reflections invaluable and very helpful in demonstrating the myriad difficulties an American convert faces.
As far as addressing the troubling aspects of Islam, (the treatment of women, the irrational prohibitions on food, the concept of jihad, the non-separation of church and state, anti-Semitism, and general intolerance of non-Muslims), he failed to provide any adequate justifications or explanations. His attempts at justifying the treatment of women were inadequate and akward and only strenghthened a rational opposition to the treatment of women in Islam. In reading, it seemed that the subject caused him a bit of discomfort. His anti-Jewish feelings were apparent and disturbing and did nothing to assuage my impression that Islam is inherently hostile to Jews in particular. All of his other attempts to explain Muslim beliefs and practices that conflict with American values also left me unsatisfied.
In the end, I have to admit that the book was helpful to me in that it made it clear that Islam was not a worldview to which I could subscribe. The book did clarify many things for me which made it more clear that Islam was in conflict with my values. I appreciate Prof. Lang's attempt to share his experiences and thoughts on his conversion and am grateful that, thanks in part to his book, I was able to avoid making the mistake of converting to a faith which would have made me profoundly unhappy.
What if.......2004-12-21
What if so called Christians were as OBEDIENT to their leader as Muslims are?
Different prespective about Islam.......2003-07-12
Dr. Lang a professor of Mathematic of KU gives an account of his conversion. He gives a very unique prespective of ISLAM.The books is probably directed at American Muslims, but this book is great if someone wants to learn about Islam, Muslim or non Muslims
