Comprehensive and a long read...........2006-12-29
Yes, I know it was narrowed down from 20,000 pages (what a job in itself) but its going to take me forever to finish this book. It's not a book you can breeze through. You're in for the long haul with this one. I'm not a fan of Warhol's work but I love the scene of the 60's, 70's & 80's and this book is definitely an insight to what was happening during those times in the theater & art world.
warhol's thoughts in the disco & business eras .......2006-05-30
the Andy Warhol Diaries. 900 pages. 1976-1987. the closest look ever at warhol's actual thought processes, opinions & speech pattern. Not the shy,. fumbling public affectation of decades of interviews. Actual day to day diary entries dictated by andy of the last 12 years of his life. backdrop: the 70s disco/studio 54 era; then the 80s art/business explosion & various losses in andy's personal life. Anyone who lived through these years, particularly in nyc and /or the nightlife and art worlds, will find so many events they recall in their memory. Warhol'd depictions of friends & various celebrities are candid, frank, brutal, humorous. This is the closest you will ever get to Andy's real feelings thoughts tone & expression. Its a bit of a committment- it must be read chronologically, it took me just over a month to read all 900 pages. but it was vastly rewarding & the insight into the real warhol is priceless; also if you were alive in this time you will reflect upon your own journey during 1976-1987. the portraits of just halston, bianca jagger & basquiat drawn alone are worth the 900 pages. rating: A
Just Read It Again!.......2006-04-07
I got this book as a gift, right after it was published in the late eighties. Since then, I've read & re-read it more times then I can count. It's just as much fun on the umpteeth read as it was on the first.
The entire Mick-Jerry-Bianca-Halston-Studio 54 entries are hilarious. It wouldn't bother me a bit if his diary was published in its entirety someday. I'd read all of the doggone 20,000 pages!
It was shocking when Andy died unexpectedly in 1987. Every time I read the book, it's like a clock ticking in my head as time, unbeknownst to him, runs out, and far too soon.
Hip NY in the 70's and early 80's.......2006-01-23
Andy Warhol knew everybody and left these brief diary entries over a period of years that coincided with the Studio 54 era of Jagger, Capote, Halston and countless other connected NY glitterati. The book is a fascinating look into Warhol's personal reflections on his friendships and the people involved in the scene at the time. It can be basically opened at random and read with enjoyment.
Pretty cool stuff if you are interested in that period of NY cafe society.
I've Been "Glued" for Weeks!.......2005-09-23
"Went home lonely and despondent because nobody loves me and it's Easter, and I cried." [4-17-81] When I reached that line in the diaries, I think I truly fell in love with Andy. He was a total observer of life and pierced a depth of feeling in his aloneness. He seemed to be a walking nerve and picked up every nuance of life and all the personalities surrounding him.
His observations about people were uncanny - and he was like a prophet in many ways, even at one point predicting his own death! He knew things about people that they probably didn't know about themselves.
For instance his glib comment after the death of Elvis Presley in 1977, "They're saying that the article Caroline Kennedy did on the Elvis funeral for Rolling Stone made fun of the local people, but I can understand that--Caroline's really intelligent and the people down there really were dumb. Elvis never knew there were more interesting people" [8-30-77] - honing in on exactly what killed Elvis!
Or when he mentioned Michael Jackson's penchant for young boys - and that was 1984!
His diaries are so revealing and so easy to read and he really makes us understand all the modes of the counterculture that revolved around his life - the music, the artists, the movie stars... and how self-absorbed they all were. And how caught up in drugs and drink some of them became.
Although Andy was obviously anorexic and somewhat alcoholic (he hated to drink yet it seemed he drank almost every day) he was constantly trying to improve himself and he wrestled with his physical self and all his insecurities every day of his life. Yet he was of strong mind and his beliefs were never swayed. And he wasn't afraid to make his feelings and opinions known. Yet his life was always overshadowed by his fear of death and disease. And he was insecure about his looks, yet managed to start a modeling career in his early '50s!
He was such a 'cat'! "There was a party at the Statue of Liberty, but I'd already read publicity of me going to it so I felt it was done already." [7-5-83] He invented his own language and way of communicating, which was very colourful and made every moment interesting. His diaries are a sensual feast; he lived life to its fullest and was able to describe all the flavors of the food and drink, the odors and scents of people and places, in such a way that the reader feels as though he/she is reliving it all.
What impressed me most about Andy was his great discipline and ability to admit to his own shortcomings. He got up every day and went to work like it was a nine-to-five job, went to church every Sunday, and stayed in tune with all that was going on in the world around him. If Andy were alive today, he'd love the Internet, e-mail and cell phones. For he was a man about the world, truly in love with life and all that it has to offer.
I just wished the diaries included an index.

The Greatness is in the Simplicity.......2006-01-18
Andy Warhol remains a true Icon of the art world. His famous '15 minutes of fame' was a terrific statement, but in Warhol's case his words and his art linger on in museum retrospectives, in art history studies, and in books on photography, fine print making, and art whether drawn, painted, of screened.
This little book is a treasure. From the opening apropos statement by Alan Cumming, the book is devoted to over 250 works of art by Warhol. His line drawings for the most part are undecorated even with cross-hatching: the single continuous line defines the faces, the bodies, the genitalia, the feet, the lips of his models. These are finely reproduced on several different tones of paper, each a full-page bleed. Then along with little quips from his feisty, shy, and sage mouth are his photographs of men including some self-portraits, some of transsexual friends, some of just beautiful male bodies, some of famous men from history. These photographs are at times followed or paired with the subsequent now famous silkscreen interpretations. Some collages and other experiments with imagery complete the set.
By this time most people including the harshest critics have the consensual opinion that Andy Warhol was a significant figure in American art history. This fine book, very beautifully designed by Azi Rad, is a substantial volume of tribute to the simplicity of Warhol's genius. It belongs in the library of every art collector and everyone who appreciates the male form - especially as much as Warhol obviously did! Highly Recommended.

A Really Exquisite Book!.......2004-12-22
What a great little book of delights! Here is a really beautiful collection of art by Andy Warhol, many of the works apparently published for the first time. There are color photographs here of men's body parts-- chests, feet, butts, etc.-- a series of color portraits of drag queens labelled "Ladies and Gentlemen", photographs of a few celebrities including Mick Jagger and the artist himself eating a banana. But most of the book is taken up by beautiful line drawings of men-- figures, faces, body parts, even the feet of Christopher Isherwood. Alan Cumming in right on the money in his foreward: "just a simple collection of lines on paper that magically produce a sense memory of something so visceral it can actually arouse." And Mr. Warhol had this thing about body hair! This is a very erotic collection beautifully produced that you will go back to again and again.

Self-invention, or rather, reinvention is at the heart of much gay culture. Being told that you should not be who you are encourages you to become someone else. But few gay men have self-invented with the panache and grandiloquence of James Lawrence Slatterly, who metamorphosed into the fabulous Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling. Taking his/her cues from Lana Turner, Kim Novak, and Gloria Graham, Candy Darling became a walking testament to Hollywood womanhood. Although she appeared in several Warhol films before her early death in 1974, Candy Darling didn't need theatrical vehicles: she lived her life as a star. My Face for the World to See is a collection of her diaries, drawings, and thoughts. While there is nothing profound, the book is a moving record of a life and imagination that illuminated the cultural landscape and burned brightly and too short.

Pure Genius.......2007-03-08
A great book - beautifully realized project on the diaries of Candy Darling, Warhol Superstar, famously immortalized by Peter Hujar in an image which was later used by the sublimely talented Antony Hegarty for the cover of his bands' (Antony and The Johnsons)CD; "I am a bird now" .
This book is a touching read and insight into Candy's mind.
"I can get very Joan Crawford about the whole thing.".......2005-06-20
Candy Darling was born James Lawrence Slattery in November 1944, and then re-emerged as Candy Darling some years later. During Candy's short exotic life, she gained fame as one of the stars from Andy Warhol's Factory. She starred in a number of films, including "Flesh" and "Women in Revolt" but died of Leukemia before the age of 30. The book "My Face for the World to See: The Diaries, Letters and Drawings of Candy Darling, Andy Warhol Superstar" is a collection of Candy's writing--and the content ranges from recipes, quotes, make up tips, lists, journal entries, and letters. The letters contain the essence of Candy's image: "I have always been a goddess above it all untouchable." And through many of Candy's statements, a glimpse of a certain unhappiness and loneliness can be seen. I loved Holly Woodlawn's memoir "A Low Life in High Heels", and I'd hoped that the book would yield a similar experience. Unfortunately the content here is a little thin. A few photographs and photographs accompany the text. What a shame that Candy Darling didn't leave a fabulous memoir for her fans--displacedhuman
great package.......2003-06-01
I was so impressed just by Darling's little pink-diary-with-a-lock-and-key packaging that, in itself, it may be enough to buy the book just to enhance the look of your bookshelf. Otherwise....Not much inside. Most memorable is a photocopy of a diary page of Darling describing what it's like to have once been known and then forgotten...or worse. The book has pages that make you regret you must hesitate for a moment before flipping to the next.
Kiss them for me...I may be Delayed.......2000-09-09
" It Glittered and it gleamed, for the arriving beauty queen" The words once sang by Siouxsie Sioux, describes the spiritual search for the ghost of Jane Mansfield. I guess the words itself in the title could have been uttered by Candy as she applied her favourite colour of lipstick by Revlon...Fire and Ice. While not an autobiography by any means, these are her words plain and simple. Little Jimmy from Long Island, grew up to be one of the Warhol "Girlettes" as she tried to emulate her favourite star, Lana Turner. The book is filled with basic odds and ends from little journals and scrap pieces of paper thrown together to cash in on the success of " I Shot Andy Warhol ". She considered herself a great actress and wanted forever to get the flaw between her legs taken off, but instead from illegal hormones died of cancer. Sadly, this is basically the only book out there that is a companion piece to " A Low Life in High Heels " By Holly Woodlawn, he fellow transgendered actor friend, rival, and sometimes, an enemy. Don't look for any special secrets (other than what it is a woman should where when going out, and a horrid recipe for a salad,
) about her life or anything, but random bitchy words and poems from someone who is lost to us forever except for two films and a photos taken by some of the best fashion photographers.
Somebody I always wanted to know more about.........1999-04-27
I've been interested in Candy ever since I saw her in "I Shot Andy Warhol" (played by Steven Dorff) I decided to buy this book because I have an interest in all things related to Andy, the Factory, and the entourage. It's very interesting- the entries are Candy's own handwriting, some of them go back to when she was in middle school. There are even pictures she drew herself. There are some nice photos too- even one in the front of her and Andy. Candy's writing is also very heartfelt- you can tell she desperately wanted to be something she wasn't. My favorite passage in the whole book is "You must be true to yourself no matter what the cost, it is the highest form of morality." My only complaint is that it should have gotten under the surface and told more about her life. But overall, I think Mr. Newton did a wonderful job. You feel like you get to know Candy throught this book, it even looks like it could have been her diary- it has a lock and key and everything. It's a good book for those who are interested in Candy, or things that went on in the Factory.
Book Description
Until 1900 there was only one. In the 1930s, Edward, the Prince of Wales, became the unwitting embodiment of two more, even though he in fact wore neither. It was not until 1989 that a fourth became popular. Throughout the 150-year his-tory of the modern tie, only four tie knots have been recognized. That is, until now.
In this history of and guide to tie wearing, Thomas Fink and Yong Mao trace the peculiar evolution of the knotted neckcloth from the seventeenth century to its modern form. These two Cambridge physicists applied a model more often used to describe atomic motion to the twists and turns of this central item of men's dress. They discovered eighty-five ways to tie a tie, thirteen of which survived their aesthetic test, and earned their recommendation. The result is a rich blend of history, science, fashion, and practicality that will become the must-have accessory for all well-dressed men.
Wonderfully illustrated and wittily written, this little classic of sartorial elegance will charm and inform in equal measure.

A lot of good ideas.......2007-06-12
The book is a bit old school but it does have about 13 main types with a bunch of variations of those.
Order from amazon uk instead.......2007-04-08
While out of stock and grossly overpriced in the used section here, it's in stock and ships quickly from amazon uk. International shipping is cheap, and it's way, way cheaper buying a new copy and shipping it from the UK than paying some of the used prices here!
My copy, with shipping, came to $12 and it arrived a week after placing the order.
When is this going to ship?.......2006-11-04
I purchased this on August 11, 2006 and Amazon has asked me to write a quick review of this book. They have not shipped it as of March 21, 2007. Buyer beware! Too bad I can't get it from Amazon. I read a copy from a friend and its a great book!
Entertaining, but overpriced.......2006-06-05
This book contains an entertaining overview of the history of ties, including discussion of specific tie knots. If you do not know how to tie a tie, the book's illustrations are very useful (but presumably such illustrations can be downloaded from the web for free).
The science part of the book is rather weak. First, the number 85 is based on knots with up to 9 moves (so ``The" in the title is rather misleading). Even then they do not distinguish between knots with different finishes (some knots can be finished off by passing the thick end through more than one loop). These are mentioned in the book, but are not included into the count. The ``aesthetic" knots are the most symmetric knots in each of the many categories they define; knots are not compared across the categories. The ``math" sections are only vaguely linked to each other or the subject at hand.
I received as a gift the 2000 Broadway Books hardcover edition of the same book, which is nicer in appearence than the softcover version.
Now my tie collection is growing..........2004-03-12
I can't remember where I stumbled onto a reference to this book, but once I read the reviews here I knew I had to have it. I don't wear a tie on a daily basis, but I do enjoy wearing one on special occasions, or to make a "statement"! I also do some theater, and have come to enjoy the opportunity for character expression that ties sometimes allow. I've always been fascinated with the seemingly endless variety, and love going to Goodwill and checking out what's available, from the outrageous to the sublime. This book is a wonderful mix of right-brain and left-brain concepts that had me hooked from the beginning! Sufficiently scientific to realize that the authors know their stuff, and wonderfully aesthetic to illustrate the concepts they present. The pictures are a definite highlight, and the illustrations for tying the knots are wonderfully easy to use. For the first time in my life, I said "Whoa, that's a cool knot... now I have to find a tie to go with it!"

Great Surprise!!!.......2007-02-20
I really was shocked by how much I liked this one. It seems the stories I am most skeptical about turn out to be the best overall. This is one of those products of skepticism. I only wish it would continue. I demand a Volume 2!
A must for Yaoi fans!
Great!.......2006-09-11
I loved the story and the art definetly follows the "Less is more" style, causing your imagination to fill in the blanks.
I enjoyed watching Noah fight his sexual attraction in the beginning, and seeing his emotional attraction grow, even suprising him at times! Sadly, Toki didn't seem to go through this same growth. Only a few times, like when he shares the story of Joshua, does he seem to be more motivated by his emotions and less by revenge for a deal gone bad. However, he does give one the feeling of genuinely caring for Noah at the end, when he forgives a near slip that could have had serious consequences.
The short story in the back was well done, but I didn't quite care for it. I would have liked to see it ended a little better, but, perhapes it's better that it ended when it did.
illustrations sparse but the story is thoughtful.......2006-08-25
The illustrations leave something to be desired -- much less detail than I am used to with this sort of book but better than some of the poorly drawn things I have seen. The story too is rather sparse in terms of words but the panels and the events are rather intense. I had hoped things would be a bit more S&M than it was but overall I was pleased.
A win for Yaoi Press.......2006-02-24
I enjoy this story more every time I read it. It has a simple drawing style that really pleases my eyes. It has a good amount to sex in it, but I favor the character development of Noah. This is one of my favorite stories by Yaoi Press.
Wonderful Storyline.......2005-12-01
I really like this storyline, and the characters. Sadly, though, I hated the story in the back. I found it to be cruel and sadistic, and not to my tastes. Other than that the art was wonderfully done, and very consistent. I found that I enjoyed this book as much as the book Pinned, which seems to have the same type of art.

Book Description
Compiled by Uncle John’s crack team of investigators, this witty and informative romp serves up a bounty of fascinating facts and tantalizing tidbits about the great game of golf. While it may not settle the question as to whether or not golf is a sport, the book does answer burning questions such as “Where is the largest sand trap?” (Clementon, NJ — a mere half acre); “How much do Americans spend on golf balls?” ($600 million per year); and “Is there a course that offers the chance to play with a live Bengal tiger?” (Yes! The Monu Valley Golf Club in Northern Bangladesh). Golf movies and presidential duffers — the good and the not-quite-so-good — are discussed, and captive audiences can learn the game’s history: its players, equipment, courses, famous flubs, and ever-changing fashions and philosophies. For serious pros, weekend duffers, or just plain fans of the game, this collection is as satisfying as a hole-in-one.

Perfect present for the golfer in your life........2007-03-10
My in laws recieved this as a present from us and I do believe I did good.
They seemed to like the bathroom reader series alot. I have other books in the house and they are read by all who live here and those who visit. Its hard to put these books down. No , the book doesn't have to be in the bathroom to read it. In fact we have at least one in every room of the house, except the kitchen. The kids love them, so I guess it must be a hit. Its not always easy to find a book that almost everyone who sees it is going to open it up and read it. These are great entertainment and very informative at the same time. I can't say enough about these books.
