A hell of a story . . ........2007-03-15
This is an excellent book! This novel will take you on a grand adventure through Brazilian culture, starting with the birth of the protagonist, Pedro Archanjo, in the late 19th century to the 1960's. The story is of the life of Pedro Archanjo, a man of humble means who matures into a novelist and chronicler of the culture and customs of the Bahia state within Brazil. Major themes within the book are the Brazilian prejudices and biases against blacks/mulattoes and the religion that they practise --what we would calll vodoo. The origins of vodoo, and a helpful index of its terms, are discussed at well.
The book is quite entertaining and replete with ribald and nuanced characters. This novel definitely left me with a greater appreciation for the history, culture and development of Brazil.
I feel the need to brush Brazilian dirt off of my knees.......2006-10-10
Firstly, I would like to mention that this book was "assigned reading" for a Latin America history class. However, within the first few pages, the lines did not feel like homework. Armado weaves a picutre of Bahian life so vivid that you feel you are walking behind the characters; hence the need to brush the Brazilian dirt. His story gave much insight into Brazilian life and centered, as the other reviewers have mentioned, on the mestizo/mullato struggle. I can only offer one suggestion to future readers: although it's not absolutely necessary, it would enrich the journey through the story if the reader knew at least something about macumba -- black witchcraft or voodoo. I didn't and I wished I had.
This is a book you won't regret reading. There are some great tidbits of true genius.
Amazing.......2002-10-21
The name Jorge Amado has been largely ignored by most of the English-speaking world. His passing did not even warrant a note in the NY Times despite his works having been translated into thirty-one languages, filmed, and serialized as soap operas. His books contain some of the most beautiful prose written. There is no limit to the quality of this, in my opinion, his best work. Amado's talent for showing the beauty and glory in the mundane is unmatched. That minor gesture, this habit, those pecularities of character, all become mountains. The protagonist, Pedro Archanjo, is both a free-spirited, entertaining, beloved rogue and a fierce activist for social justice. The locale of Bahía is the home of this tale and the setting could not be better. After an American intellectual celebrity 'discovers' the writings of Pedro Archanjo, a race is on to show who was the biggest supporter of the man who has now become a hero, posthumously. The story occurs along two lines, one is in Archanjo's lifetime and the second during the hoopla generated decades later by the professor from Columbia University. Both tales are resplendent reflections of Bahían life. One has the poverty-stricken barrio of Archanjo's residence with cardsharks, gangsters, capoeiristas and sporting houses. The other modern discos, celebrity worship, and the fantastic possibilities of memory. The tale demonstrates well and humorously the appropriation of history by the present for its own purposes. There are too many wonderful aspects of this novel to describe in this small space. I recommend this novel to anyone who asks for the reason that even with the strife that takes place in it, this book contains a world completely enviable because the people in it seem far more alive than almost any we meet in life.
Perhaps Jorge Amados Masterpiece, in a 1-10 scale, and 11........1998-04-17
To me, this is the most important and the best book by Jorge. The book is about the life of Pedro Archanjo, a mulatto man who spent his whole life fighting prejudice. The book teaches you about the Roguish lifestyle Archanjo lived, his growth and maturity and his death. It is very interesting how the interest for why Archanjo wrote grows exponentially as you keep reading. Also, the book deals with the commericalization of Archanjo after his death when an American Genius tells the Brazilian press about his respect for the land of Pedro Archanjo. Within a few days the newspapers make a big deal and lie about the life of Pedro Archanjo to sell ads. The author, a poet suffering the pangs of love, tell you about Archanjo, but also about his personal life. You may ask why I call refer to the author by first name. The reason is because after reading most of his books, I feel like I know him and I tell that this is a must read(this book has the most untraslated terms than any other of Jorge's books, which makes it so much better). If you like Jorge, please email me.
One of Amado's best. Really makes you think........1998-01-15
The pursuits of knowlegdge and the importance of true friendship come together well in this book. The characters are so vivid, you might as well be there in person. If you want to live the adventure, Amado is the one to read.

If you're looking for some hot short stories - this is it!.......2007-08-23
Open Invitation tells the story of three friends - all older (Thank you Jasmine Haynes for having heroines 39 and older!) and their "adventure" at The Sex Club. Each story is wonderful and I think each story gets progressively hotter.
Invitation to Seduction tells Debbie's story. She's in a passionless marriage. Her husband is not interested in having sex with her anymore and she's feeling more and more frustrated which is affecting her self-worth - doesn't she deserve passion? She's not quite sure about going to The Sex Club for her friend Virginia's bachelorette party, but decides to go for it. When she gets there, she discovers that there is someone in the world who's very passionate about her....This was my favorite of the three stories - I loved the emotion between the two characters. This is one story that I just kept rereading - and not just the "good" parts!
Invitation to Pleasure tells Virginia's story. She's the one who had her bachelorette party at The Sex Club. She's on marriage number 4 and is determined to marry someone safe - Mr. Nice Guy. Who cares if there are no sparks? She's had sparks before and ended up with a broken heart. Little does she know that her husband Brett is determined to provide sparks - massive amount of sparks. Another hot read - I think hotter than Debbie's story. I loved Brett's manuevering of getting Virginia to admit that theirs was a passion-filled marriage.
Invitation to Passion tells Stacy's story. She's the oldest in the bunch (46) and a regular at The Sex Club. No relationships for her - she just wants to have sex with younger men. But Jud, the owner of The Sex Club, has been watching Stacy and is determined to win her over. Wow. Probably the raciest of the three stories. I found Stacy a little harder to relate to - but frankly, who cares? I still loved reading about her and Jud.
All in all, another Jasmine Haynes winner. I've read all of her novels and there's isn't one that I found to be less than a 5 star book. Read, enjoy, and please Jasmine - write some more!
WOW!.......2007-08-04
Three stories about 3 friends. Each story stars one women as the lead character. Each one as hot as the last. This is erotica at its best. Highly recommended. Great fun fast read. Enjoy!
Open Invitation .......2007-07-27
A bachelorette party at a place called The Sex Club yields different fantasies for three very different women...
Invitation to Seduction
As the shyest of the three friends, Debbie Carter must be talked into really participating in all of the events available at The Sex Club. Yet once she does, it only makes her realize all that she's missing in her marriage. When she is issued a mysterious Invitation to The Sex Club she accepts, but will she discover the man of her fantasies or a broken heart?
Invitation to Pleasure
Virginia Hansen plans to get all of her wild fantasies out of her system before marrying handsome, easy-going Brett Branoff. Until Brett's curiosity makes him realize there is much more to his new wife than she shows him. Brett wants the uncontrolled, powerful sexual creature who wasn't afraid to she all the men at The Sex Club how to pleasure herself...and he'll do anything he has to to get her.
Invitation to Passion
Manicurist Stacy Parrish indulges her fantasies with her open invitation to The Sex Club but when owner Jud McCord issues another invitation, will Stacy accept it? Stacy prides herself on choosing young lovers to tutor, as well as satisfy. Can one older, experience man tempt her to give up all the others?
Whew! Watch out because Jasmine Haynes's Open Invitation is scorching hot. These three women all visit The Sex Club for different reasons yet each finds exactly what they need to satisfy all of their passions. The various couples indulge all of their fantasies and along the way discover the perfect partners. If you're looking for stories with realist emotion, as well as sexual encounters to stimulate your own fantasies, then Open Invitation is the book for you. Enjoy!

All women deserve to find men like this!!.......2007-03-19
I absolutley loved this book. I am just in my 30s, but I so can relate to this book. These 3 women wanted a man to treat them like they were needed and wanted sexually. Every woman wants a man to make her feel like she is the only one he desires and these men do what they have to do to make that known. I couldn't put this book down and it made my heart beat and blood run hot. It is just that good. This was my first book I have read by Jasmine Haynes, but I am definitley going to be buying her other books.
Bravo!!.......2007-01-18
In what I think is probably Jasmine Haynes best, and hottest, title yet, "Open Invitation" will thrill women everywhere.
In these three stories, tied together by their experience at "The Sex Club", excitement, real living and spontaneity don't begin until after turning forty. With failed marriages, turning forty, lack of self confidence, sexual hunger, Jasmine Haynes brings real life issues to the forefront that many women today face. With realism, identifiable characters, as well as hot, steamy love scenes, Open Invitation delivers ten-fold.
There was no one particular favorite for me in this anthology. Debbie, Virginia and Stacy are all women I could identify with-even though I haven't hit forty myself-but they all wanted the same thing that most women want - the one man to settle down with (finally!), have a healthy, loving and active sex life, be accepted for who they are and the chance to enjoy life. These are all things that Ms. Haynes consistently and wonderfully pens in this anthology. It comes through loud and clear.
Open Invitation is a memorable read. Bravo to Ms. Haynes for writing a story women can really identify with.

Good read.......2007-02-09
I really liked this book. It is the third book in a series. There were some really funny moments. Dan and Lilia are complete opposites but it works.
This was my second favorite in this series the first beign Who's on Top.
Goes on the keeper shelf.......2005-11-24
Opposites attract big time in this fun, emotional story by Karen Kendall. Cowboy Dan Granger hires etiquette consultant Lilia London so he can attend his sister's wedding into an aristocratic English family. But while Lilia is teaching him about the proper fork, he's wondering about proper seduction techniques for Miss Prim. Lilia never knew sex could be so uncivilized, and she's finding she craves Dan's brand.
I loved the instant clash of opposites. From breaking antique china to an antique chair, and then using his shirt to clean up the mess, Dan comes across as a rugged, yummy Texan. And although Lilia grew up as a good girl, she realizes that it's okay to let her hair down. These well-drawn characters seemed quite real with real motivations. I loved the plot twists, and especially loved the English riding scenes.
This is a quick read, and I loved the ending. This book rocks, and its going on my keeper shelf!
****Funy cowboy romance****.......2005-10-04
This is the third book of the trilogy "The man handlers"
All 3 stories are fun.
Kendall once again wrote a story full of sizzles and laughs.
Cowboy Dan contract Lil (manner's specialist) to have a makeover since his sister is getting married soon to an English aristocrat. Dan loves his sister and don't want to embarrass her with his rough manners. The chemistry between this two is incredible and the love scenes are very creative even though they are two opposites' poles.
Front back cover:
When cowboy Dan Granger hires etiquette diva Lilia London for a crash course in manners, she has no idea what she's getting into. His twang and his rough manners are foreign to the well-bred Lilia. Still, she's determined to polish him. Her task would be much easier if Dan wasn't so mouthwatering - the six-pack riding above his belt alone is enough to make her mix up her forks. And when he offers to teach her his own theory of sexual etiquette - Uncivilization 101 - how can she resist?
But is a sensual trip into hedonism enough to counteract a lifetime of proper behavior? As Lilia's professionalism reasserts itself, she realizes she has to let her sexy Texan go...unless she can convince herself to do an advanced degree in Uncivilization.
I had a good time reading this book; however my favorite on the trilogy is unzipped?
Have a fun read

How fantacies come true..........1999-03-13
Tiffany White's use of mental stimulation does it again with this fantastic story. The leading lady finds herself tempted by one of TV's hottest, but most bullheaded men. Using fantacies to play his game, a wonderful story developes through the use of tantalizing conversation. Another delicious story from Tiffany White, and as always, I recomend it highly!

Cross the Red Sea with this book!.......2007-10-05
James Long is mainly concerned to make a case for Joseph, Moses and the Exodus taking place in the 6th Dynasty of Egypt (other current writers advocate the 18th dynasty or the end of the 12 dynasty for the Exodus). His case for adjusting the chronology of Ancient Egypt is good, and has been made by a number of others. He just takes it farther than all the others, without any clearer reason other than Talmudic legend offers some clues that (read in one way) might point in this direction. His discussion about the parting of the Red Sea is about the best yet, and also the possible location(s) of the real Mt Sinai. Probably the most tenuous links are those between the rulers at the end of the 6th dynasty and the artefacts concerning the Exodus, though his exposition of the Ipuwer papyrus is excellent (it just doesn't necessarily link up to his chronology - Ted Stewart makes a similar case for this same document in respect of a 12th Dynasty Exodus, and similar evidence for the closing sequence of Pharaohs!). The one area I struggled with was the "traditional Jewish dating", which if taken to its logical conclusion means that Thiele's master work (the Mysterious Numbers of the Hebrew Kings) needs a couple of centuries extracting from its timelime somehow in order for James Long's thesis to hold up. I suspect that if this dating (with respect to the dates of the Patriarchs) was adjusted by a couple of centuries, and the Egyptian timeline dealt with in a similar way, then more clarity could appear. Much good information, very well written, dodgy arguments!
Ground-breaking History.......2006-09-21
This clearly written comparative study will engage your attention, interest and startle you with the abundance of existing archaeological and literary records that show how much genuine history is contained in the Hebrew Scriptures. The author has a wonderfully, clear, easygoing style that makes him a great tour guide through records and sites from ancient Egypt, Assyria, Moab that reveal memorable parallels to stories and individuals from the Old Testament.
Long's discussion of the various Egyptian sources relating to Joseph and the Ten Plagues from Exodus is memorable and clear; his review and insights about the chronology of the Egyptian dynasties is solid and important world history. He clears away alot of outworn theory...
All high school and college ancient history classes should be studying this book with its discussion of records like "The admonitions of an Egyptian Sage", the Moab stone inscription about the tribe of Gad and Israelite dynasties of Omri and Yehu to see how much basic knowledge there is readily to be had.
This book has a friendly style whose eye-opening discussion could change education, history and even impact politics in a healthy way.
A very important and beautifully designed book.
A Fascinating Book.......2006-06-19
Very well documented and critical yet captivating like a detective novel, I strongly recommend this book. It's just a wonderful reader on archeological findings and research pertaining to the Old Testament. GKlein
The Riddle of the Exodus -- Solved!.......2005-08-22
This book solves the problem of correlating Jewish and Egyptian histories to show evidences of the Exodus in the histories of both nations.
Uncovers the surprisingly weak foundations of modern skepticism.......2005-07-01
Long's book is a real treat to read! In a concise and logical way, he picks apart the apparently shoddy scholarship supporting the traditional Egyptian chronology.
Long has certainly made a prima facie case that the Exodus triggered the demise of Egypt's Golden Age and the end of the Sixth Dynasty. Three years have passed since this book was written. To my knowledge there has been no rebuttal. I suspect the skeptics would prefer to ignore this powerful challenge, because they cannot win a debate on the merits.
It is a shame that so many have allowed their faith to be shaken by the dogmatic pronouncements of liberal "scholars" who are afraid to engage in public debate.
