Finally- a book that is right from the Bible!!!.......2002-05-18
What a blessing it was for me and my children to find this book! It was simple, yet colorful and the images are easy on the eyes- pretty general so the book can be applied to the death of any friend or relative! I was pleased that it gives kids who read it (or have it read to them) the opportunity to actually draw pictures inside the book, and write things down- which makes it a good book especially for young children. My children will soon loose their Grandmother and this is a book that they can read together with mom or dad. The best thing about this book is that it's right on target with what the bible teaches. I praise God for nudging the author to write this much needed book!
This book is the best one on the market to explain death........1999-01-05
The book "Someone I Love Died" is from my point of view the best. As a Pastoral Minister who deals with over 2000 children each week, one of the things I do is expain death to children. This is a concept that for them is very hard to understand. Why does God take someone they love away? This book expains clearly, correctly, the concept of death and what happens when someone dies. This understanding is done through the use of clear, concise, easy to understand language. I recommend this book to anyone who works with children or to a parent who are the first and primary educators of their children. This book is based on Christian values.

Anna Gavalda's Someone I Loved is a hauntingly intimate look at the intolerably painful, yet occasionally valuable consequences that adultery can have on a marriage and the individuals involved. Readers familiar with I Wish Someone Were Waiting for Me Somewhere, Gavalda's stunning collection of short stories, will once again be charmed by her deceptively simple prose, while new fans will quickly fall under the spell of this enchanting literary voice.
Once he discovers that his son Adrien has left his wife Chloe, along with their two adorable daughters, the normally removed Pierre Dippel steps in to rescue the girls, driving them from Paris to his rustic country house for some much needed rest and reflection. While the girls watch cartoons and run around in "You're a Barbie Girl" sneakers, Chloe and Pierre discover a bond they never knew existed. As Chloe comes to terms with her abandonment, Pierre confesses his own adulterous affair, years earlier, with a translator living in Hong Kong. In the shadow of the story is Suzanne, Pierre's status-conscious wife who pardoned his actions in order to live a socially-acceptable life. As the days go on and the hours get later, it becomes apparent that Pierre is filled with regret over losing the one woman he ever truly loved ("Every day you have to fight a bit. A little bit each day, with the courage to be yourself, to decide to be happ--..."), while Chloe is forced to confront the raw anger she feels over losing the life she had grown to love.
Short in length, yet long in substance, Someone I Loved ends like most great love affairs, forever leaving you wanting just one more moment. --Gisele Toueg

Forever Leaving You Wanting Just One More Moment.......2006-02-20
"So love is just bullshit" That's it? It never works out?"
"Of course it works out. But you have to fight.."
"Fight how?"
"Every day you have to fight a bit. A little bit each day, with the courage to be yourself, to decide just to be happy"
Pierre is explaining to Chole that you need to work to make love happen.
Anna Gavalda at the age of thirty six and after a failed marriage has written her first novel. This is a beautifully crafted story of the search for happiness. The gut wrenching courage it sometimes takes to find that little bit of love and truth.
She said in an interview :
"Je l'aimais [Someone I Loved], was a story about the courage it takes to be happy. I seem to like characters who are fragile, wounded, adrift. I think most people are like that. The ones that aren't are either hiding it or are utter fools. I think our sensitive side is the essence of being human. Between those who never doubt their situation on this planet and those who ask themselves every day why they're here and how it all makes sense, of course I prefer the questioners."
Chloe is dumbstruck. Her husband, Adrien, has left her and their two daughters for another woman. He was not happy. She is bereft. Her father-in-law, whom she called "the old bastard", comes to her aid, and insists that she and the girls accompany him to his mother's country home. There she makes several discoveries. Pierre is not the man she thinks he is,and maybe, just maybe this terrible tragedy might have a silver lining. She learns over the days that Pierre is an unhappy man, that he has allowed his happiness to slip through his fingers. He has allowed this to happen, understands why it happened, and that he was powerless to move on. Pierre had met the love of his life after he was married with children. He lived the secret life of an adulterer, and was too weak to change his circumstances. This he examines with several bottles of good wine through out a night when Chole was at her most miserable. "Regrets he has a few, a few too small to mention", but that has changed the direction of his life. The years he spent in happiness that he gave away; that he did not try and change. Yes, we all have regrets, we are all looking for that happiness, and we may find it but for a small moment. Anna Gavalda reminds us that life is too short, we must search for what eludes us.
And as Scott Peck tells us:
"The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers."
'Someone I Loved' ends like most great love affairs, forever leaving you wanting just one more moment. --Gisele Tough " Highly Recommended, prisrob

Beautifully written, unsatisfying ending.......2005-06-23
This is the story of a woman who's just been abandoned by her husband, and you think it will be about that betrayal, but no. She ends up taking a trip with her father-in-law and her own daughter (who is young, and only appears once or twice) and they have a long, fascinating conversation about all the father-in-law's buried emotion for a woman he fell in love with while he was married to someone else.
The book is mostly dialogue, without tags, which sometimes bothers me, but didn't here. I loved Gavalda's short story collection, "I Wish Someone Were Waiting For Me Somewhere," and this novel displays the same gifts. She cuts to the emotional heart of the matter without sentimentality, and paints beautiful word-pictures.
That said, I thought the book ended on a flat note. After thinking about it, I knew what Gavalda was trying to express, but it just wasn't satisfying. It didn't resolve anything and it didn't make as vivid an impression as the other images and emotions in the book.
Still, it is worth reading, especially if you liked her short-story collection.
Devastating .......2005-05-16
What a wonderful, piercing book. It is basically a conversation between the daughter-in-law and her father-in-law, first starting with the pain she is experiencing from the betrayal of his son. Then he unexpectedly begins to open up, revealing a most astonishing relationship that he had in his younger years. It is all the more startling because the author used the "Old Bastard" as the vehicle for this beautiful tale. There are many cautionary lessons in the narrative but, in the end, it was the emotional impact that I was left with. Very creative. Gavalda, a French woman, has such a lovely way of imbuing men with undeserved humanity. It turned out to be different than I expected. I don't think that I'll ever again mutter under my breath "Damned French". It was short. When I got half way through it, it started over again, in French! It was hard to get into at first, then it caught on. If I had not luckily first read the flaps I would not have even understood the context of the narrative. It moved me deeply. By the time I finished it I was in disarray and all choked up. I am anxiously looking forward to reading her other novels.

Setting: San Francisco
Sensuality: 8
Security expert Daisy Parker once spent an unforgettable night of passion with society photographer Nick Coltrane, but he disappeared the next morning, taking her heart with him. It's nine years later when Nick walks back into Daisy's life to hire her services as a bodyguard. Daisy's still angry at him, but she really needs the money, so she takes the job and moves in with Nick to protect him 24 hours a day. Unfortunately for Daisy, Nick hasn't told her quite all the truth about the trouble he's in and protecting him from thugs gets really complicated, really fast. But keeping Nick alive and healthy pales in comparison to the difficulty Daisy has with guarding her heart from him. Beneath her justifiable anger, she's as attracted to Nick as she was nine years before and Nick shows all the signs of wanting her just as badly. If these two can manage to stay alive, will Nick find a way to convince Daisy that this time their future includes marriage and happy ever after?
Baby, Don't Go is a fast train of suspense, comedy, lust, and love. The heroine's tough-as-nails outer shell conceals a vulnerable interior that the hero, macho though he is, understands perfectly. No one does romantic comedy with a twist of suspense quite like Andersen. --Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
Rule One: Don't Let Him In
When photographer Nick Coltrane saunters into Daisy Parker's office, all she sees is the man who broke her heart nine years ago. Never mind that he wants to hire her as his bodyguard—ah, security specialist—or that her fledgling company desperately needs the cash flow. She'd once broken her own rules, only to watch his sexy self go running for the door. Providing round-the-clock protection for him now is out of the question ... right?
Rule Two: Always Be Able To Walk Away
Nick needs Daisy around to keep the hired thugs that are out for his blood from actually getting it. If he can make amends for the way he screwed up nine years ago in the process, then so much the better. Except time has done nothing to dull the memory of how Daisy once rocked his world off its axis and her cocky attitude and mouthwatering curves still have the power to turn his brain to mush. Well, that doesn't mean Nick can't handle living hand-in-glove with the one woman he's been obsessed with for years. Yeah. Sure he can.
Some Rules Were Made To be Broken
In the city by the bay, two people who once were friends and used to be lovers will discover if love and trust can come from a passion that breaks every rule.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites by this author!.......2004-06-12
Daisy's mom was married to Nick's dad for a short time many years ago. At his sister's wedding, nine years ago, Nick took Daisy's virginity. When he suspected his feelings might be a lot deeper than he would have liked, he got scared and bolted (OK, definitely was a jerk!)
During those nine years Daisy became a cop, then started her own security business while Nick became a famous photographer. One day Nick shows up wanting Daisy's protection from someone trying to kill him because of photos he took. Daisy is less than inclined to help him since she's not forgiven him for breaking her heart but needs the business, and potential referrals, so she takes the case.
I liked the fact that Nick didn't have a problem with a woman protecting him. Most men would balk at that even though it's done every day; Secret Service, FBI, police. He seemed to respect her knowledge, skills and experience.
But Nick isn't being totally honest with Daisy and fears that when she finds out, his dreams of a future with her will blow up in his face. And Daisy is trying to hide her feelings and hurt behind a tough exterior.
A Great Read!.......2004-06-08
Loved this book! Quite Steamy! It was a quick read, very entertaining. The pages kept turning quickly. There were many thrilling, explicit sex scenes. Loved them! The first of many books I hope to read by Susan Andersen.
couldn't even finish it..........2003-09-30
I guess someday I might go back and pick this one up again but as far as today goes...I just couldn't find the energy to finish it...
This is a story about Daisy...a young teenage girl whom gave herself and her virginity to Nick ....an older hunk and a photographer....who walks out on her...Now Nick walks back into Daisy's life after a nine year absence and hires her services as a bodyguard. He has taken a scandlous photo of some senator guy and these goons are out to find that film!!! She takes the job because of the money (her business is a little broke) although she is still angry and bitter with Nick about the way he felt her alone in that hotel room.....
Even after everything Nick did to her nine years before, there is still a strong attraction between them that I just couldn't picture....I could not feel the connection....the desire....something just didn't click....The story wasn't a bad idea and I especially liked the female being the strong and independant type which is a nice change....but I got so bored with this book because I just couldn't connect with the characters...
Not for me but I know a lot of you out there would love this book!
Was this supposed to seem like a cartoon?.......2003-03-25
I want to start off by saying that Susan Andersen is on my automatic buy list, so even if the book description sounds kind of silly, I still expect Ms. Andersen to make it work. I cannot explain how disappointed I was in this book. It was so unrealistic that at times I was picturing cartoon characters. I've read almost everything of hers that I can get my hands on. Some of her other books I have given 5 stars (books like Obsession or All Shook Up). The only reason that I gave this book even 1 star is because it did include her trademark steamy love scenes. I normally finish a book this size in 1 or 2 days, but "Baby, Don't Go" took me over two weeks to muddle through. I definitely don't recommend this book, even if you are a fan of her other work. You will be very disappointed.
Disappointing.......2002-10-24
This is my first Susan Andersen book and I got it because she seems to be on everybody's must-read list, and I'd heard so much about how great her books are. One reviewer even said that Andersen's writings reminded her of Susan Elizabeth Phillips'. So with that in mind I rented this book. But I have to say, this book does not even begin to live up to its hype. The characters are unlikeable and lack depth, the dialogue uninteresting and getting through those first few chapters was such a bore until I finally gave up. It just seems to me like this book was written without real effort and just for the sake of meeting her deadline.

great book.......2007-02-02
A great book to prepare your toddler for preschool. Nice illustrations and a great story of a boy elephant, Daniel, and his first day at school.
What was amazing is the fact that children can associate with Daniel, given the fact that the author does a fantastic job portraying all things, emotions, activities that preschoolers are facing every day at school. All my kids loved the book as even the sequence of activities described in the book matched what they were doing at school! A definitely must-read before your little one goes to preschool for the first time.
useful.......2005-09-17
As a worried mother of a new preschooler, the book was extremely helpful in addressing the first day of preschool
Preschool prep.......2002-04-17
"Don't Go!", written and illustrated by Jane Breskin Zalben, is a charming picture book for younger readers. It tells the story of Daniel, a little boy who is experiencing his first day at preschool. Daniel and his family are all elephant-headed humanoids; the other kids in his class include a hippo, a pig, a cat, etc. This device is nicely used and gives the largely realistic book an appealing touch of fantasy.
The friendly illustrations have bright colors. The book ends with a note from book editor Michele Coppola; she offers parents some tips for their child's first day at preschool.

Me hate Bizarro Superman. Him worst idea DC comics ever have. Him stupid! Talk funny! Him live by Bizarro code:
- Us do opposite of all Earthly things!
- Us hate beauty!
- Us love ugliness!
- Is big crime to make anything perfect on BIZARRO WORLD!
Superman am strong, handsome, and morally spotless--boring! But Bizarro Superman am ugly, stupid, and unethical. Him wonderful! Me hate him!
From his very first appearance in the 1950s Superman newspaper strip to the episode of Seinfeld devoted to him, Bizarro has flown (backwards and upside down) into comic fans' hearts. Tales of the Bizarro World is a purist's delight, collecting 15 full-length stories of Bizarro and friends (Bizarro Lois, Stuporwoman, Bizarro Krypto, and hordes of copies of Bizarro Number 1). It's full of great episodes like "Bizarro's Secret Identity" (he's a reporter at the Daily Htrae--"Earth" spelled backwards) and "Bizarro Goes Sane!"
What's most pleasing, and most irritating, about the whole Bizarro thing is that sometimes Bizarro World is opposite Earth, and sometimes it's just... well, bizarre. Writer Jerry Siegel and artists John Fort, Wayne Boring, and Curt Swan were clearly having fun when they created Bizarro, and fans can't get enough of the weirdest guy ever to wear a red cape.

Superman: Tales of the Bizarro World.......2006-06-25
I always enjoyed reading the Bizarro Tales when I was a kid. They were funny to read, because they did everything backwards on their planet. If you are a Superman fan, I think you will enjoy these stories which are a part of the Superman universe.
Un-sane.......2005-11-09
SUPERMAN: TALES OF THE BIZARRO WORLD is a collection of stories that ran as backup features in Adventure Comics #285 - 299 (1961 - 1962). They follow the adventures of Bizarro #1 and his family on the cube-shaped planet Bizarro World (Htrae), which is populated by imperfect duplicates of Superman, Lois Lane, and other familiar supporting characters from the Superman titles. Xaime Hernandez supplies a cover that is an excellent tribute to Action Comics #1.
Fittingly, the humorous introduction to this collection is written by none other than David Mandel, the writer of the "Bizarro Jerry" episode of Seinfeld. What follows is 185 pages of weirdness, courtesy of regular writer Jerry Siegel and artists John Forte, Wayne Boring, and Curt Swan. Of course, we're all familiar with the Bizarro grammar, which throws standard rules out the window. In addition, teeth are brushed with shoe polish, flowers are pulled from weed gardens, alarm clocks signal the time to go to bed, cars have square wheels, and best of all: everyone knows that Bizarro #1 is really Bizarro Clark Kent. The stories are absolute chaos, with plots frequently shifting directions and concluding nowhere near the initial premise. But remember, this is the Bizarro World, so no complaints here! Also, they are quite funny - there are some priceless bits of dialogue, and for some reason, the fact that Bizarro Perry White smokes exploding cigars makes me laugh every time I think of it. John Forte is the primary artist for these stories, and his depiction of life on Htrae captures the oddball mood of Siegel's stories perfectly, with bent skyscrapers, multiple planets in the afternoon sky, and colors that would make any visitor from Earth vomit.
If there's any complaint I have for these stories, it's that Siegel sometimes overdoes it in reminding us that Bizarro culture is so different from ours. For example, while a Bizarro will indeed drive its car through an intersection on a red light, I don't need to be told that, on Earth, we stop at a red light, in order for the gag to work. The stories would work more smoothly if Siegel had just left the interpretation to us. But that's a small complaint - I spent more time laughing at the stories than nitpicking. Cheers to DC for a well-deserved reprint!
Ready to Start Climbing Mt. Everest, Lads?.......2004-09-05
This is subversive, dangerous, anarchic, wonderful, gut-wrenchingly funny stuff. These comics first appeared in Adventure Comics in the early 60s. They're more on-target now than they were then. (It probably seemed silly in 1963 when a dieting Bizarro-Lois ordered a steak.)
See Bizarro become a trial lawyer, direct a horror film, and dress up as President Kennedy for Halloween. There's not a clunker in this book. Don't miss it.
Me hate this, make me so mad........2003-03-21
This book am so awful. Sometime me read and feel very mad at universe. Me read to me 4 year old son. Most comics am not violent enough for he. This am 'cause made long time ago when comics having more blood. Now we talk bizarro all over house. Make us sad sad sad.
Pure, delightful sillyness.......2002-09-04
You know, as much as I appreciate the plethora of "Bizarro" reviews for this book, I feel there should be at least ONE straight review for people who aren't in on the joke. So in case you don't quite get it -- Bizarro is Superman's imperfect duplicate. Everything he does is the opposite of Superman. That's pretty much the gist of it.
This book collects the "Tales From Bizarro World" series from the old Adventure Comics title -- stories about a whole planet of Bizarros, including Bizarro-Lois Lane, Bizarro-Jimmy Olsen, Bizarro-Lex Luthor, Bizarro-Supergirl and even Bizarro-Krypto the Superdog.
Amazingly, these stories were written by Superman creator Jerry Siegel himself. They're pretty simple, pretty light, and some of them make absolutely no sense even in BIZARRO logic. It's fluff, but it's enjoyable fluff. It's pure, beautiful Silver Age wackiness, and it's well worth the read for any fan of Superman or goofy comic books in general. Pick it up.
Book Description
Open your mind and heart and discover how the sacred art of fasting can strengthen your spiritual appetite.
Fasting as a religious act increases our sensitivity to that mystery always and everywhere present to us
. It is an invitation to awareness, a call to compassion for the needy, a cry of distress, and a song of joy. It is a discipline of self-restraint, a ritual of purification, and a sanctuary for offerings of atonement. It is a wellspring for the spiritually dry, a compass for the spiritually lost, and inner nourishment for the spiritually hungry. from chapter 9
Though fasting is practiced in some form by nearly every faith tradition throughout the world, it is often seen as scary or something only for monastic life. But fasting doesn't have to be intimidating. And it doesn't have to mean going weeks without food.
The Sacred Art of Fasting invites you to explore the practical approaches, spiritual motivations, and physical benefits of this ancient practice by looking at the ways it is observed in several faith traditions. Inspiring personal reflections, helpful advice, and encouragement from people who practice fasting answer your questions, allay your fears, and reveal how you too can safely incorporate fasting into your spiritual life.

A sober, practical, and deeply reverential discussion of an ancient practice undertaken in search for enlightenment.......2005-09-12
Written by Catholic Priest and member of the Paulist Fathers Thomas Ryan, CSP, The Sacred Art of Fasting: Preparing to Practice is a straightforward look at fasting as a means to open oneself spiritually. Chapters survey the use of spiritual fasting in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and among the Latter-day Saints (Mormons), and strive to explain what makes fasting a "sacred art". The final chapter discusses in detail proper preparations for fasting, what health conditions make it unsafe to fast, alternative means of fasting for those who cannot safely do so, how much exercise is appropriate during a fast, and more. The Sacred Art of Fasting specifically focuses upon fasting as a spiritual practice rather than a weight loss or health practice, yet there is some discussion of the physical benefits of a controlled fast. A sober, practical, and deeply reverential discussion of an ancient practice undertaken in search for enlightenment.
