soldiers which redeemed mankind.......2005-03-19
In 1937, Sánchez -Mazas a fascist writer and main ideologist of Spanish Falange was living as a refugee in the neutral embassy of Chile at Madrid, as the rebellion has caught him in the capital, ruled by the Republicans. He tempts to escape to France in a truck, but was detected in Barcelona also in the Republican side, and imprisoned. But when troops of Franco won and advanced in 1939, Sánchez- Mazas with some dozens of less important prisoners was driven into a forest to be shot before the arrival of the nationalists. Some prisoners attempted to escape. Almost none got to survive, but Sánchez -Mazas did, because although he was effectively found by a Republican soldier in a hole, it seems that man, feeling that cruel war was over and lost, and tired of killing, refused to shot him and said his mates he hadn't seen nobody. Mazas survived during some weeks hungry and suffering intense cold, aided sometimes by the inhabitants of the rural masías. Later, he joined the Franco's troops and was named a minister, mostly honorary than real.
This is the skeleton of this novel, and these facts are true, but the narration includes more. At the beginning, the author, a journalist and writer of dubious talent -truly the own Javier Cercas if you want- hears to tell this story to a son of Sánchez - Mazas, also a real figure and excellent writer, Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio. Cercas wants to know more about this strange episode, but Ferlosio, an old man something extravagant, eludes to explain more details, divagates with irony, as he has an ideology frontally opposite to his father, and refers to the soldiers of Salamina, the ancient battle when the Greeks defeated Persian fleet, as he thinks soldiers as these are capable to save mankind from disaster. The search of the identity of that mysterious, perhaps dead man that saved a prominent enemy sixty years ago is the full plot of this novel. Effectively, Sánchez- Mazas wrote a diary of these terrible days now almost lost in a library. The difficult searching of these possible soldier of Salamina has to end in France, when an eighty old year Spanish man named Miralles, ex combatant of both Spanish Civil and World War II with the Foreign Legion of general Leclerc survives in Dijon with terrible scars, now under French nationality. The author interviews that old soldier, an exceptional creation of the author and perhaps the best part of the novel, but the reader must decide if he was the man which didn't killed his enemy or not. Cercas does a reflection: "One doesn't find those things he search, but only those than life wants to give him".
Why is not always the right question..........2003-09-27
A gripping tale, about a historically almost insignificant incident in the last days of the Spanish civil war (a leader of the Spanish falange, an ideologically right-wing movement adopted by Franco's nationalist as their ideology, flees into the woods during a mass execution of high-level prisoners. Although a soldier finds him, he does not report him and therefore allows him to conserve his life) and, more importantly, the reasons behind why it happened.
I found the author's treatment of the story a good reflection of the topic's worth, and he skilfully extracts much from what could arguably have been covered in a newspaper article (largely by dedicating much of the book to the process by which he arrives at his reconstruction of those fateful days).
Unfortunately, I could not shake off the feeling that a better wordsmith and more detached observer might have been able to render the work of a higher standard. Written from the author's perspective in researching the events, Cercas seems intent on casting himself in the role of the blase and flawed character that one would expect from a 50s hollywood movie. I found this often reflected negatively on his ability to truly humanize the other characters in the story (some received much kinder treatment than others, for sure).
But overall, the book keeps a breezey pace and is a joy to read. I recommend to everyone, though I would underscore the author's insistence that it is a historical novel -- the line between fiction and fact can get blurry and I found myself doubting the truth of some of the author's retellings. But it did not detract from its overall quality, and it deserves a solid 4 stars.
Book Description
In the final moments of the Spanish Civil War, a writer and founding member of Franco's Fascist Party is about to be shot, and yet miraculously escapes into the forest. When his hiding place is discovered, he faces death for the second time that day-but is spared, this time by a lone Republican soldier. The writer becomes a national hero and a member of Franco's first government, while the soldier is forgotten. Sixty years later, Cercas's novel peels back the layers of truth and propaganda in order to discover who the real hero was. Winner of the Independent Prize in Foreign Fiction, Soldiers of Salamis is a wholly original work of fiction by a modern master.

Compelling Story!.......2007-08-29
In Soldiers of Salamis, Cercas weaves a wonderful tale that highlights the challenges of the writer working to craft his story as well as the incredible complexities for those on both sides of the Spanish Civil War. It is a thoughtful, thought provoking, compelling story that brings into light the tragedies and ironies of wartime, especially a war that tears a country in half. Once you get into the story, it is very hard to put the book down.
Soldiers of Salamis.......2007-08-24
This book is an interesting read, more for the intricate way it's written than for the story itself. Cercas is obviously a master of the language, one can only imagine that something was lost in the translation from Spanish. Perhaps a bit elliptical but nevertheless worth a go.
Reimagining human generosity and history .......2007-03-08
Reimagining human generosity and history. A novel, already a classic in Spanish Literature with a very original structure.
A jewel of a book.......2006-07-10
Cleverly constructed, intimately written, a non partisan portrait of the passions of the Spanish Civil War. The ending
is touching and exquisitely human.
No ending.......2004-12-10
This is a book about the author's search for an ending and not finding one.

Not the usual strength of C. Davidson's heroines.......2006-02-15
I had a really hard time with this book. Right up front the heroine is depicted as someone who I could have no sympathy with, no respect for, given her affair with Connor's brother. She doesn't even give a really good reason why it happened, and I can't side with a hero who's in love with that shallow of a woman. It makes me question his own likeability.
What I usually like about Carolyn Davidson's heroines is that they are plucky, and true to their hearts. They show strength under difficult situations, and this woman here is engaged to one man, and so easily seduced by another. And then she expects her fiance to still want to marry her. Very naive, and immature.
I kept waiting for some redeeming quality to surface to at least give me a good reason to like her, but I didn't feel like I found it. I much preferred Davidson's TEXAS LAWMAN; and REDEMPTION novels.
OH, YEAH! FOR ALL ...............2006-01-02
For all the discrepencies pointed out it was still an entertaining story.
Human beings do tend to vasilated according to their emotions at any given time.
I can cuss out my siblings and still love them. Depending on who wants to give in we still make up for our hard feelings.
Loris Peterson was as weak willed as any teenager of this day when it comes to attention and attraction. The male hasn't changed much from time immemorial, seduction without responsibility is still his game until he faces the facts of life.
Conner Webster is furious with his brother but it seems like his love for Loris is stronger than any wrong done to him. A bit of maturity maybe? He does not make up with his brother right away. His concern for Loris is deeply compassionate when he finds out that she is kicked out in the cold.
And forgotten is the snidely interferance of good ole mama Webster. That is one strange chick.
The trials and tribulations of Connor and Loris and their emotions have a lot to due with their age and maturity. She does tend to be a bit of a flake in thinking that she can take care of herself.
Still was an enjoyable read [even though I enjoy much more action or danger] James, the brother, did show a bit of remorse in the end - wonder if he will have a story?
Loved the friends and neighbors and the way they pitched in when the barn burned.
Definitely recommend - you have to try it for yourself to see if you get some enjoyment. [I like my frontiersmen more threatening.]
Ugh!.......2005-12-02
This book is so shallow! The character's motivations change from page to page, making them even weaker & more undeveloped.
For example, the heroine, on page 6, might be thinking "I can make it on my own, I don't need the help of anyone", but when the hero appears to take care of her, she turns into Little Miss Helpless on page 10!
I also find it ridiculous that a 19th century Western woman raised to ride horses never learned to saddle one, and is an inexperienced cook and gardener, etc. The author makes her parents well-off, (I guess -- we're never told their background) but still, she would not have been helpless around the kitchen and the garden in that day & age. I also found it ridiculous that the heroine broke into an abandoned house & finds it stocked with all kinds of supplies. Wouldn't the people who abandoned the claim have sold off the furniture and taken as much of the food as they could with them?
The hero starts out furious with the heroine for getting pregnant by his brother. You'd think he'd have a real lasting issue with this, but this fury lasts for maybe all of three pages, then he's feeling he ought to help her out. Then "helping her out" turns into lustful feelings...all of this by Chapter 2. Oh, by the way, the brother comes back later in the story and all is forgiven. HUH?
Or, the hero thinks the heroine's parents did a terrible and unforgiveable thing by throwing her out when she gets pregnant before she marries, but in the next paragraph, he's telling HER SHE ought to forgive them. Then SHE thinks yes, she COULD forgive them, but the next page she's snubbing her mother in the street and telling the hero she'll NEVER forgive them. This type of annoying lack of continuity goes on & on through the story!
I was expecting a story on the level of Cheryl St. John, but all I got was a really low-grade western romance. Very disappointing and a waste of time.
Oklahoma Sweetheart.......2005-11-22
I am still amazed at the knowledge it would take to complete a story such as this...a knowledge of the past, it's people, and places. I enjoyed this story, much more than other writen by Carolyn Davidson...I think it was more human. A heartwarming story that was very worthy of my time.
Book Description
Timothy Zahn, Hugo Award-winning author of The New York Times best-selling Star Wars trilogy, blazes a spectacular new path across the sky in an epic original novel of star-spanning action adventure, mystery and intrigue. A long era of peace and prosperity in the interstellar Commonwealth has suddenly come to an end. Four alien starships of unknown origin have attacked, without provocation, an eight-ship Peacemaker task force, utterly destroying it in six savage minutes. The authorities claim there were no survivors. But Lord Stewart Cavanaugh, a former member of Parliament, has learned through back channels that one man may have survived to be captured by the aliens: his son, Commander Pheylan Cavanaugh. A large-scale invasion appears imminent, and the strictest security measures are in effect . . . measures that Lord Cavanaugh has no choice but to defy. He recruits Adam Quinn, who once flew with the elite Copperheads--fighter pilots whose minds are literally one with their machines--to rescue his son. Quinn assembles a crack force of Copperheads to steal out of the Commonwealth security zone and snatch Pheylan Cavanaugh from the conquerors. Depending on the outcome, Quinn and his men will retum home as heroes or as the galaxy's most despised traitors--if they come home at all.

Don't waste your time or money........2007-04-04
This is the first book of a trilogy, none of them are worth reading. I bought all three for a dollar at a charity used book sale and feel like I paid too much. But read all three because they were on hand, I'd already paid for them and I needed some brain dead diversion between more difficult tasks.
The plot line is hackneyed, the execution by the numbers, and the resolution completely unsatisfying. These books may be entertaining for a young person just getting into action scifi, but most adults or science fiction veterans will have instant deja vu for any number of works that have covered this territory better.
Great first book in the series.......2006-08-17
I just finished this one, and am looking forward to getting the others in the series. Zahn creates great characters: flawed and lovable, and believable. The Science Fiction (note the capitalization) is good; not a lot of details, but enough made-up buzzwords and close-to-current technology to let your brain deal with the gap.
The Commonwealth (an association of spacefaring races, including Earth) is being threatened by a new race, called The Conquerors. At the center of the book is the Cavanaghs: Stewart, the father, a former high-ranking politician; two sons, Pheylan, the physical one, and Aric, the thinker; and Melinda, the daughter, a surgeon and pretty middle-of-the-road between the brothers. I'll not spoil the fun, but there are no Star Trek-like, miraculous inventions to save the day. Some lucky breaks, and lots of times when you think, Yeah, I saw that coming -- but enough surprises to make it fun also.
An easy read; if you are looking for an Asimov-weight book, or a Niven-like explanation of a really cool technology, you've come to the wrong place. Zahn is more about characters, politics, and subterfuge; his stories just happen to occur in the future, so you can warp around the universe looking for your loved ones.
Highly recommended; 5 out of 5 stars.
A fun Trilogy.......2006-02-07
I thoroughly enjoyed this series, the read is fast, and the approach to the story makes it very fun
Decent plot, little depth.......2005-08-21
The plot of this book is adequate. As you may have read in other reviews, an alien species attacks. Our protagonists are all human, the race that is first among equals of the space federation which keeps the peace. The federation has a doomsday weapon it hasn't used for decades, some species of the federation don't like the way the humans run the show, the new aliens are truly alien. It's a pretty good setup.
But the execution is wooden. The characters are cardboard-like, the few aliens we meet get a page of dialogue each and are then gone, and there are three parallel stories which all get too little treatment to be interesting. Characters are either good or evil and their motives are simplistic and along the lines of "find my son", "dislike main character", "be loyal bodyguard", etc.
BEGIN, SPOILERS: And the author even makes characters this thin behave in unnatural ways. For example, a career soldier and politician who spent 20 years containing the threat from one warlike alien species lands on their planet. After two pages of dialogue, he has been convinced that they aren't warlike at all. A page or two later, he commits high treason against the federation to help them. In another passage, the good guys (who are civilians) somehow forge orders to get a squadron of space fighters sent to them. They then explain to the fighter pilots how they are looking for a relative in hostile territory and need help. Half the pilots agree to ignore the impending war and go AWOL to help out. Come on.
END, SPOILERS
Wooden characters are nothing new in sci-fi. Think about Asimov's or Clarke's work. The difference is that their stories had interesting science in them (the Foundation, laws of robotics, century-long space travel, etc). "Conqueror's Pride" doesn't. So I found myself not caring what happened to these simplistic characters with weird behavior as the flitted by half a dozen uninteresting worlds.
Not my cup of tea, but I see others liked it. If you like straight-forward action and spy stories in a sci-fi setting and you don't care much about character development, this may be for you.
Epic space adventure at its best!.......2005-01-06
The first in the three part Conqueror's Trilogy, Conqueror's Pride introduces a rich new universe of characters, locations and technology for the reader to explore.
This is definitely one of my all time favourite science fiction stories...It has everything you come to expect from Timothy Zahn, complex and intriguing characters, a fast paced, twisting plot and fantastic action and suspense...For those who have yet to read anything by Timothy Zahn, you will find him and his absolute best here...

A MUST READ FOR ALL CHRISTIANS!.......2007-09-05
This book is a must read by all Christians!!! Today, churches and bookstores (even Christian bookstores) are full of non-biblical, New Age ideas and authors that are doing a great job of leading believers off the narrow path and onto the wide path that leads to destruction. Brian Flynn does a great job of exposing the New Age practices and concepts that have infiltrated Christian theology. Not only does he give you his view (as a former New Ager), but he also gives the reader lots of examples, along with references, so that his statements can be verified. I couldn't put the book down! Fast and easy reading...Buy two or three so you can give copies to your friends!
Jesus said many will be misled..........2007-06-07
Brian Flynn's background as an avid New Ager, then becoming a born-again Christian, makes what he has to say fascinating and eye-opening. He describes how Eastern spiritual practices and concepts are seriously spreading through the Church. He shows how they do not enhance the gospel of Jesus Christ, rather they oppose it and destroy. His logic is pointed and down-to-earth. For example, he says if Eastern prayer methods never brought a Hindu or Buddhist to a saving faith in Jesus Christ, then how could they bring a Christian closer to God? They will not. Instead we hear of Christians receiving revelations that all paths lead to God and God is in all! Brian also "names names", which has brought him rejection from some pastors. However, teachers can say so much that sounds Christian and "good", that one can assume the teacher is really OK unless they are named and the error specified. One teacher whose writings he discusses is Richard Foster, who was an instructor of mine while I attended George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon from 1975 -77. This was before his first book came out, "Celebration of Discipline". He was quite popular with the students and I liked him as well. I remember him leading our cass once in a guided imagery session. We were directed to picture ourselves traveling in our spirits above the clouds, meeting Jesus, and listening for Jesus' word to us. I felt a little uncomfortable, but I did do it. It seemed a little "weird" and unnecessary, so I never pursued it. It wasn't until years later when I read Dave Hunt's book, "Seduction of Christianity", that I realised something was actually wrong with it. Brian's book further clarifies how this is an unbiblical and very dangerous method of "prayer" to God. It is so easy to overlook error when it is mixed with Truth. It is easy to dismiss it as a mere disagreement than as the serious danger it is. I remember Foster's appeal in college being he wasn't stuffy, and he was a seeker for more of God. He certainly seemed Christian. He was thought-provoking, kindly and wanted our lives touched with the gospels. But I still should have evaluated his teaching by God's Word. We should do that with anyone's teaching! "Running Against the Wind" definitely helps us do that. King David Said, "From thy precepts I get understanding, therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:104,105.
A warning to all spiritual aspirants.......2007-04-21
I am rather surprised at the lack of critical reviews of this book, so I will offer one of my own. My own experience is quite the opposite of Mr. Flynn's. I am a former fundamentalist Christian whose eyes were opened to the truth of the mystical, pluralistic path and the dangers of fundamentalism. Brian Flynn is a dangerous fanatic who seems bound and determined to bring out the worst in Christianity and to suppress everything positive the Christian tradition has to offer. He fails to realize that the true essence of Jesus' teachings is quite harmonious with eastern spiritual practices. He tirelessly advocates the futile attempt to know God on a purely intellectual level, while condemning as dangerous and demonic any effort to truly know God on an experiential level, as Jesus himself did. If you would like to read a book that more accurately represents the true teachings of Jesus, I would recommend Paramahansa Yogananda's "The Second Coming of Christ."
Putting on the Armor of God.......2007-03-20
This former New Age leader found God as a witness and renounced his pagan ways. Now, in earnest, he is preaching what the New Age does not tell you ... and why Churches must do a "call to arms" and defend from within from pagans in the pews. This is a testimony to read and heed. The New Age is now mainsteam and the danger is real of spiritual tampering from the very people who claim to help lost souls.
Please read and use your own counsel but remember .... not all things of light are good for you.
Learn why some of the most popular writers on New Age, despite their seeming sweetness, will confuse you if you are not careful: such as Doreen Virtue, Carolyn Myss, Sylvia Browne, and many others who portray themselves as guides for the weary.
A Call to Arms.......2006-12-28
This book is a wake up call to Christians. The emergent church and purpose-driven movements are more dangerous than people realize. Like a disease, they are infecting Christendom with pagan rituals and preaching another gospel that varies drastically from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. By telling his personal spiritual journey, Brian Flynn describes his encounters with the New Age and critical degrees of the paranormal, ultimately leading to his being born again in Jesus Christ. The emergent church has already infiltrated countless churches around the world; Flynn sounds the trumpet call to arms.
