--Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times
--Thulani Davis, The New York Times Book Review
"Conmovedora y perspicaz...Habla de una familia que est dividida política y geogr ficamente por la revolución cubana...[y] de las hendiduras que se abren en cada lado: En Cuba, entre una abuela que es una partidaria fervorosa de Castro y una hija que se refugia en un culto de santería afrocubano; en América, entre otra hija, agresivamente en contra de Castro y su propia hija, la artista punk y rebelde, que se burla de su obsesión...El realismo es exquisito."
--Richard Eder,Los Angeles Times
"Extraordinaria...Un tejido intrincado de eventos dram ticos con lo sobrenatural y lo cósmico...Evocadora y opulenta...Una narrativa rica y obsesionante, una voz nueva y excelente en la ficción contempor nea."
--Jackie Jones, San Francisco Chronicle
"Impresionante...Su historia se trata de tres generaciones de mujeres cubanas y sus reacciones por separado a la revolución. Su hazaña particular es la de contaria en un estilo tan caluroso y dulce como los 'aromas continuos de la vainilla y la almendra,' tan rítmico como la música de Beny Moré."
--Amelia Weiss, Time

¡Gracias a Dios!
The original version is the one in ENGLISH.......2003-10-03
Be warned, if you though a book with this title, and from an author with such a Latino name, had to be originally written in Spanish, you are wrong. The Spanish version is a translation, with a Spanish-from-Spain spin, rather than a Cuban touch. If you want to read the original version, you are better of with the English original "Deaming in Cuban". Even the author herself agrees, that the book looses a bit in the translation.
A Powerful Book.......2003-04-14
This book present the life and destinies of a CUban family divided by its political beliefs. It presents the life of the half of the family that stayed in Cuba and pledge its allgiance to the Revolution and the life of the ones that left Cuba for the United States. The exaggeration presented in the individual characters with their tendencies, fetishes, and political views opens a window into the reality of the Cuban families that have been divided by the Revolution. Cristina García writes with a powerful voice that entices your attention.
loosen up and enjoy!.......2003-03-20
Like other readers, I was a bit put off by the handful of characters all thrown at me at once. I had to refer to the family tree provided more than once. At one time, I put down the book, crying, This is insane! And then I got it. It is insane. Okay. I read Marquez, I get it. Once you stop wrestling with the story, trying to fit it into a conventional fiction mold, you can loosen up and enjoy the ride. Ms. Garcia is such a talented writer she can get away with anything.
I recommend this book without reserve.
Enjoy!

The P.I. Who Loved Her
Seven years ago, private investigator Mitch McCoy was getting married-only his bride forgot to show up. He never dreamed he'd see Liz again. . .until she breezed into town, wearing another wedding dress! Unfortunately for him, Mitch still wanted her-badly. But could he convince her to give him the wedding night he'd never had? Or would Liz's latest groom track her down first?
For Her Eyes Only
Immigration agent Jake McCoy prided himself on being a loner. So how had illegal alien Michelle Lambert stolen her way into his heart-and his bed-so quickly? The gorgeous Frenchwoman was searching for her young daughter and refused to go home without her. So, torn between desire and duty, what else could Jake do but marry her?

With FROM MCCOY, WITH LOVE, we get a double dose of the McCoy brothers-and boy, oh boy, what a dose it is! Could there be a better set of brothers than the McCoy's? I think not, and the fact that there are several of them just makes the pie even sweeter.
In THE P.I. WHO LOVED HER, we get the exciting and ever sexy story of Mitch McCoy, a man who loves everything except weddings. Seeing his older brother, Marc, fall in love and marry the love of his life, Melanie, was great. He's happy for his brother, really he is. The fact that watching the nuptials brought back memories of his own failed marriage attempt-the one where the bride forgot to show up-shouldn't be a reason to begrudge his brother's happiness, and Mitch doesn't. Really. It's just that all the talk of happily-ever-afters is starting to drive him nuts. It's bringing back too many memories of Liz Braden and the wedding that wasn't.
On his way home, grateful to be released from watching the bride and groom's happiness unfold before him, Mitch sees a woman stranded on the side of the road. A woman who, amazingly enough, looks a lot like Liz. Sure that he's imagining things and only indulging in a little wishful thinking, he stops to aid the woman-who, incidentally, is wearing a bloodstained wedding dress. Imagine his surprise, and distinct feeling of getting a great big dose of bad luck, when the woman turns out to actually be Liz, who also just so happens to have jilted another groom.
THE P.I. WHO LOVED HER is sexy, entertaining, and a wonderful treat. As Mitch becomes involved in solving the mystery of why Liz left another man at the altar, what the blood on her wedding dress means, and how he can get her back into his bed without letting her into his heart, readers are right there for the ride. Believe me, this isn't one you'll want to miss.
Next comes FOR HER EYES ONLY, featuring middle McCoy brother Jake. An agent for the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Jake is a man who is used to following a strict set of rules. Illegal aliens are to be handled in a very specific way, with no room for personal interpretation. His rule book gets flung to the wayside, however, when he meets Michelle Lambert-a hot and sexy woman who is in a world of trouble.
Michelle is facing illegal alien status. Her purse has been stolen. And her daughter is missing, most definitely kidnapped by her estranged husband. With no one else to turn to, Michelle puts her trust in Jake, a man sworn to uphold the law. Michelle knows that their attraction is something she's been looking for her entire life, but the fact that she and Jake are now in trouble with the law makes her uneasy. Can she really drag Jake, and his entire family, into the very personal battle of rescuing her daughter outside the confines of INS rules and regulations?
FOR HER EYES ONLY is another wonderful trip into the McCoy family, with realistic characters who will have you laughing and crying as they try to overcome some very big obstacles.
Tori Carrington is a master at writing emotional romances that pull you in from page one. You don't want to miss the other books in this series-License To Thrill (The Magnificent Mccoy Men) (Harlequin Temptation, 740), featuring Marc McCoy, You Only Love Once (The Magnificent Mccoy Men) (Harlequin Temptation, No 823), starring David McCoy, Never Say Never Again (The Magnificent Mccoy Men) (Temptation, 837), centering around Connor McCoy, and A Real McCoy (Signature Select), with Kathryn Buckingham McCoy taking center stage.
great price for two great books.......2005-07-03
Tori Carrington is one of the hottest writers in series romance today, and has just branched out in to Mainstream Fiction with Sofie Metropolis, a delightful first person story, full of humor for Tor/Forge publishing. But I really think it's with their McCoy series they continually give you stories with such family heart. If you haven't caught the series, here is your chance to get two full novels of McCoy sagas for the low price of one! A bargain any day!
The McCoys are sexy lads who are alpha males and all walk the path of law enforcement in various venues. In the first book - The P.I. Who Loved Her - you get Mitch McCoy's story. Mitch is a private eye. He loved Liz and seven years ago they planned to marry. Only on their wedding day, Liz never showed up. Mitch is coming home from his brother's wedding late at night, so naturally thoughts go back to his `almost' wedding. When he sees a bride along side a broken down car, he thinks he spies Liz's face. He laughs. But sure enough, it's Liz! This time she is running from another marriage. Wearing yet another wedding dress she is on the run from groom number two and comes back home. Mitch is attracted to her but can he trust a woman who always leaves at the last moment.
The second book in this double-feature - For Her Eyes Only - is Jake McCoy's tale. He works for Immigration. A loner, he is content with his solitary life until illegal alien Michelle Lambert comes into it. The stunning Frenchwoman is on a search for her young daughter. Despite Jake's insistence, she digs her heels in and vows not to go home without her child. Being an honest lad, he marries the lass so she can stay in the USA legally¯and in his bed!
Great price for seriously great reads!

The Spanish heritage of the Southwest........2003-12-29
This is the second Marrin book I have read. This author does a good job summarizing the important aspects of this history. Along the way, he brings some interesting stories into the overall historical summation. I like his writing style as it can be understood by a teenager or an adult. The overall message in this book was how the Southwest was first lost by the Spaniards, then the Mexicans, and won by the United States. The Southwest is defined as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and California.
As mentioned, Marrin always brings interesting stories into his narration. You find out the origin of Texas, how Ps and Qs became a phrase, Taylor's reaction to a self important Lietenant, and others. These stories liven up the historical summation. They are a joy to read.
This is a good read for both teenagers and adults. Although the history is not covered in depth, it gives the reader a base from where to go.
Book Description
In Conquerors' Pride, Timothy Zahn, Hugo Award-winning author of the New York Times bestselling Star Wars(r) trilogy, unfurled an epic tale of drama and courage as the interstallar Commonwealth faced savage invasion by alien starships of unknown origin. Now he probes deeply into the world of the invaders themselves in one of the most powerful evocations of an alien society ever created.
The Zhirrzh have won a temporary respite in their war with the barbarians. But the Human captive Pheylan Cavanaugh has escaped, and for that Thrr-gilag, the young Searcher, finds himself disgraced, his bond-engagement to a female of a rival clan imperilled. Soon he becomes a target of hidden and powerful forces seeking to remake Zhirrzh society in their own merciless image. His only hope is to prove that the overclan authorities are wrong: that it was not the
Humans who started the war.
But time is short. The forces of the Zhirrzh are overextended and face swift retaliation. The Zhirrzh have learned to conquer death itself -- but even that awesome power will be no match for the devastating might of the Human Conqueror armadas. Thrr-gilag soon comes to realize that his people face a two-fold
threat: destruction by Human technology. . . or destruction from within.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent second novel in Trilogy.......2007-01-25
Timothy Zahn has upped the stakes in his second novel in the Conquer's trilogy. After the first novel,Conqueror's Pride, which details the events that lead to the beginning of the Human-Zhirrzh war, Zahn takes on the ambitious task of narrating the events from the aliens point of view. This is one of those novels that should have a degree of difficulty factor figured into the review is this is not an easy thing to accomplish.
However Zahn does a superb job of pulling this off by clearing explaining the differences in culture but also interjecting just enough similarities between humans and the Zhirrzh to help the reader identify with this alien culture. The greates difference between the two is that the Zhirrzh have two states of being-the first as biological entities and then after their mortal bodies die they are able to exist as incoporeal beings known as Elders.
The Zhirrzh belive that their human opponents have devised a super-weapon that will not only destroy their coporeal bodies, but can extinguish their lives as Elders as well. The majority of this novel deals with the Zhirrzh's attempts to find out if the Humans do actually possess such a weapon and how they can possibly overcome a force that they have never encountered before in their existence.
By telling the narrative through the Zhirrzh's perspective, Timothy Zahn has given depth to this military-style space opera. This enables the reader to identify with both participants in this battle and sets the stage very well for what should be a rousing conclusion to this trilogy.
Amazingly written.......2006-04-06
Timothy Zahn has a knack for keeping you on your toes. Although this book is the second in a trillogy, it is distinctly different from the first in so many ways, and yet, it fits in with the story impeccably. I was very impressed. A must-read for all sci-fi fans.
The Zhurzh are awesome!.......2000-08-05
I read the first book, and I really enjoyed it, and I just wanted to get the seconed one. When I realized that it was from the point of view of the Zhurzh, I started to have doubts, but it turned out to be just as good as the first. Vivid, and emotional, you find yourself feeling the way the characters do, hoping that things will turn out for them. This book compelled me to read the third.
A refreshing change.......1999-12-16
I first got into Timothy Zahn's work through his Star Wars Titles, which were good. However his work with the Conqueror's Trillogy is exceptional. His non Star Wars stuff is far superior. His approach to the concept of "First Contact" is refreshing and well worked. If you want to read a good story with very interesting twists, these are the books for you.
Weakest of the series.......1999-11-29
There's a cliche that goes, 'a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.' Well, this is the weak link in the Conquerors' series.
Which is ironic since Conquerors' Heritage has the most intriguing idea of all three books: presenting the viewpoint of the alien invaders. Sounds interesting, doesn't it? But, alas, it simply isn't. Central to this problem is that Zahn promises a glimpse into an alien culture, but presents a world in which very little seems alien to us. The world of the Conquerors is essentially a quasi-human society with numerous ironic and tiresome twists. Example: the basic unit of time is the hunbeat, instead of the heartbeat (see how clever that is?). Yes, to Zahn's credit, there are indeed some points of interest. I did find the mystery of the fsss organ interesting (What is it? How's it work?), at least until Zahn turns it into an almost comical commentary on euthanasia. Careful readers will catch this, finnicky readers will be annoyed by it. Overall, Zahn gives the impression of being a talented writer with nothing worthwhile to say.
It is also worth noting that Zahn breaks a major rule of narrative structure and has it blow up in his face. The problem in this series (as defined by book one) is the conflict between the humans and the Conquerors. This is what Conquerors' Pride started out with, and it is where we were left at the end. Zahn's mistake is that in this second book, the central problem of the series is barely addressed. Instead, Zahn deals with the family squabbles of characters who, in the first book, were relatively minor characters. This simply doesn't work. Zahn deviates from the main premise of his story so far and for so long that readers are likely to tire of it rather quickly. Readers who claimed that Conquerors' Heritage was boring or lacked the intensity or interest of the other two books are most likely responding to this problem.
Readers who have read the first book and are debating reading the second should exercise caution. However, if you're like me, then once you start a series you're in for the long haul, and, yes, Zahn does return to his original premise with Conquerors' Legacy and the story does improve somewhat. If you've still got the stomach for it, that is.

Two Pagan Subjects Merged into an Excellent Craft-Book= .......2006-12-18
I like Druidry and i like Herbcraft. So, when i read this book ,it was a wonderful surprise. As expected ,it's a specialised reading, for those of us in the Craft. So,if you do not like druidism, yet enjoy studying about pagan use of herbs, you may be only half satisfied.Or if you enjoy Druid rituals, minus the natural herb aspect, you might be turned-off .I guess anyway.Yet,you may learn something about the complete Druid experience. The synergy of these two distinct subjects into one cohesive book,is an excellent united topic to explore.I gave this book the full five Druid stars.Enjoy!
Good starter resource on Druidism.......2006-12-10
This is a good primer and starting place for anyone interested in delving deeper into Druid lore and thought, as well as some of the larger pagan spiritual traditions that were active around that same time. Definitely a breath of fresh air from valentines day and labor day celebrations.
Useful, Informative, Fun and Reverent.......2006-10-13
I just got this book last summer, long after it was originally written, so though I am a johnny-come-lately to this work, that doesn't diminish my appreciation for it. The cover shows a lovely woman with braided ribbons in her plaited hair, and on further refection I feel this is a perfect image to symbolize the book, as it weaves in lore, medicinal herb information and homeopathic information on the same entry. It's well organized around the Wheel of the Year, each holiday being a chapter, plus one on The Herbs of the Druids. Cross references to an herbs original placement reduce repitition and make the book clear and very accessible. This book is most definitely is part of my permanent collection of "the lore".
Dawn Killen-Courtney, author of The Trollton Chronicles fantasy series.
A great book by a respected elder.......2006-09-30
Hopman is one of the most respected elders of the Druid community. This book is packed with information on various herbs and their corelation to Druidry. It weaves the herbs to and through the druidic holidays and other correspondances. It's an attractively presented book for the Druid who is yet a novice to herbcraft.
Necessary Reference for Neopagans Across the Board.......2006-09-16
I enjoyed this book and will be using it undoubtedly as I prepare for each season and seasonal holiday- or any other rite of passage I may be involved in! It is well written and organized, divided into sections by holiday or specific rite of passage, allowing the reader to use it as a valuable reference. My only complaint with this book was that the section actually describing how to make salves and tinctures, ect, was quite brief, although it did seem useable. I just wish a little bit more detail was used there to assist the reader in utilizing this beautiful book just a little bit more!
