5 out of 5 stars The sublime art of MD.......2006-02-02

Duras is an author whose books often take some preparation to read. If you are familiar with shifting perspective and narration, and feminist literary criticism, this will prove a fascinating and rewarding read.

Lol V. Stein is traumatized in her youth, jilted by her lover. From then on, her life becomes enigmatic, even to herself. We follow the story, unsure at the beginning who is telling it. When we find out, pieces of a puzzle fall into place--but Duras never wraps anything up or gives simple answers to the complex problems of life. Few authors have created meditations on love and loss that are as profound and complex as Duras' great novels--and this is one of them.

4 out of 5 stars A Haunting, Erotically Charged Novel of Memory.......2002-04-18

Lol Stein was nineteen years old when her fiance, Michael Richardson, abandoned her. The moment lives starkly in Lol's memory, even after she's been married for ten years, after she's had three children, after she should have moved on with her life. The memory endures until it can be revised, until Lol can make a new memory to replace it.

Tatiana Karl, Lol's best friend in childhood, was with Lol the night her fiance left her. He did it publicly, at a prominent dance in the Town Beach casino, while Lol and Tatiana watched. Lol collapses in a state of depression, becomes uncommunicative, changes. She is brought back to South Tahla, the place of her birth, to recover. It is here that she meets John Bedford, marries him and seemingly moves on with her life, literally leaving South Tahla, as well, for ten years and breaking off all contact with old friends, including Tatiana. But the memory lingers, darkly, and can only be erased when Lol and her husband return to South Tahla, return to the place where the memory was made.

Lol works at erasing the mental trauma of her past with a new memory, a memory wrought from obsession, voyeurism, and calculated seduction. She resumes her relationship with Tatiana, now married, and makes a new relationship with Tatiana's lover. Haunting and erotically charged, marked by a disturbing psychological aridity, and written in a complex, non-linear style marked by the shifting viewpoint of its narrator, "The Ravishing of Lol Stein" is another example of why Marguerite Duras deserves to be ranked as one of the finest writers of Twentieth century literature.

I read for some time waiting for it to be interesting. No such luck.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-01-09

_The Ravishing of Lol Stein_ tells the story of a woman who watches her fiance abandon her for another woman and feels compelled to reenact the tragedy in later life.

It's a compelling premise, but I found myself curiously unmoved by the characters and ultimately by the writing itself-- it seemed too inflated with its own sense of tragedy and pathos and I felt like a crucial sense of humor was somehow missing from the situation.

I used to really enjoy Duras when I would read her in my early twenties, so I'm not sure if it was the individual book that I didn't like, or whether I've just lost my taste for the emotional drama that she specializes in as a writer.

                    Book Description

Ever since witnessing a sacred ritual, Rhenna of the Free People has been isolated. Not outcast, yet not part of her tribe, she walks alone, guarding the land's borders. And growing more troubled by the changes in the wind. Anger and war are rising. The mountain-dwelling shapeshifters--partners to the Free People--are disappearing, and word has come of an evil new god: The Stone God, whose followers are known by the red stones they hold and the chaos that accompanies them.

So when Rhenna hears that shapeshifter has been captured by the Stone God's servants, she must rescue him. Now Rhenna is embroiled in a dangerous game as the forces of evil and nature fight to control humanity's future. Together with a growing band--the enigmatic shaman Tahvo, the panther shapeshifter Cian and the rebel Quintus of conquered Tiberia--she must travel the world, seeking to prevent its destruction.

Whatever danger lies ahead, the downfall of the Stone God has begun. . .

4 out of 5 stars THIS SERIES WAS CANCELED BY THE PUBLISHER.......2006-12-09

I just wanted to let people know that may think about buying this book and the second one that was released NOT TO. The series was canceled and it would have been much longer than just the two books that came out, so unless you like to not know the end of a story save your money.
I think that AMAZON should be ashamed of themselves for selling this book at full rate when should it be on super clearance. I know that some people here might think that would be a good idea but I found it to be an enjoyable read. Sad to say we will never know the end.

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't Connect to the Characters.......2006-02-23

This is the story of Rhenna of the Free People (aka Amazons) and her quest to find out what has happened to the Free People's allies, a clan of male shapeshifters called the Ailiu (may have spelled that wrong). As another reviewer pointed out, the plot is a much used standard in this genre, a band of people find one another and fight together to rid the world of some great evil that threatens them. Unfortunately, the authors writing style was convuluted and she failed to get me interested in any of the main characters. It's not a good sign when you wish that one of the main characters would die so that something interesting happens and you reread sentences again and again with no idea what point the author is trying to make. Can't see myself desperate enough for reading material to continue on with the series

5 out of 5 stars Hooked On Kinard.......2005-04-27

This is the first of Susan Kinard's books that I've had the pleasure to read and as of now... I'm hooked! A wonderful story with characters that feel real despite the fact that some display mythical and magical powers. There was for me an underlying message as well; no matter who you call God - there is magnificant power in prayer.

                    2 out of 5 stars Very "Dusty " plot.......2005-04-09

As a veteran Fantasy fan, I got tired of this storyline years ago. The hero (or heroine, in this case) sets off traveling the world and gathering companions in a quest to save the world from the forces of darkness and evil. From "The Lord of the Rings" to "Star Wars", its been done to death. This is book one, so it mainly just sets the stage and introduces the characters. I expect book two will see the heroes barely avoiding disaster only to triumph in book three. As another reviewer said, if I read the follow-up books, I'll plan to borrow them from the library. Like many of its predecessors, the story seems to drag on and on. I prefer my fiction with a little more hope and optomism.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-03-21

I can't wait until the second book comes out. I love Susan Krinard's werewolf books and I will enjoy this series.

                    Book Description

An undeclared air war looms along the North American west coast unknown to the citizenry.

Lieutenant-Colonel Douglas Mark White, a fighter squadron commander stationed on Vancouver Island, analyzes evidence surrounding the crash of a maritime patrol plane; he concludes that the aircraft was shot down by a hostile fighter. Doug attempts to solve the mystery despite the resistence of the Wing Commander, the seeming disinterest of authorities at higher HQ, and a lack of resources. Accidental damage to his eyes, which places his position as a flyer and squadron commander in jeopardy, complicates his quest.

Who committed this act of destruction and why? What can be done about it?

4 out of 5 stars Debut Novel: Vultures In The Sky by Shields Mc Tavish.......2003-12-12

Lieutenant-Colonel Douglas White has several major problems. He is commander of an understaffed and under equipped squadron stationed on Vancouver Island and his Wing Commander despises everything Lieutenant-Colonel White stands for. He resents his life style, the closeness of his squadron, and his gung ho attitude as a fighter jock. If Wing Commander Banks knew of his eyesight problems thanks to a freak injury, which is not explained well, he would be history.

But after the apparent shoot down of a patrol plane by an unknown hostile fighter aircraft, White isn't about to tell him. White knows it was not some mechanical failure as the brass believes and is convinced that the patrol plane was a victim of enemy action. Despite being ordered to do nothing more that support the search and rescue activities, he begins to investigate. His investigation begins to accumulate evidence, especially when a survivor of the downed patrol plane is found, that it was shot down. Over the next several weeks, he begins to uncover evidence of the existence of a faux military unit operating in the area with links to his past.

Primarily an action adventure novel, this debut novel works best in that area with a number of authentic flying sequences that directly relate to the author's military experiences. He clearly is operating under the "write what you know" principle and on those levels, this book works. When he strays from his chosen field, the novel becomes slow moving and nearly grinds to a halt.

The character development in this novel is limited and awkwardly handled through several secondary storylines. These diversions from the main plot and storyline are extremely slow and bring the book to a virtual standstill. The dialogue and character interactions through the secondary storylines do not read as if these are real people and seem to serve no more than background filler material. Almost nothing is accomplished in these sections for moving the story forward and if they had been edited out, this novel would have been a more enjoyable read.

However, depite those shortcomings, overall this debut novel is an enjoyable read. The plot and action sequences are well done and the author manages to grab and hold the reader's interest. With or without some minor editing in the future, this is an author to keep an eye on in the action adventure field.

4 out of 5 stars Foxbats with USAF Markings Spotted in Canadian Airspace.......2003-01-30

A Canadian Arcturus maritime patrol plane mysteriously disappears on a routine patrol out of Comox, a Canadian Air Force base on Vancouver Island. As reports filter in it becomes apparent that an equipment failure was not the cause of the crash.

Lt. Colonel Doug White, commander of a CF-18 Hornet squadron based at Comox, institutes a clandestine investigation of the event. His initiative pits him against the base commander in solving the mystery of the Arcturus loss.

Along the way, Doug suffers an accident with his eyes imperiling his flight status. The discovery that MIG-25 Foxbat aircraft are flying through Canadian air space with USAF markings deepens the mystery.

In the process of the investigation and aggravation of the base commander, one of the pilots in his squadron is lost during air to air combat with a USAF marked plane. Eventually, many more players become involved in this delightful story that has a completely authentic military setting and a surprise ending that is not contrived and in no way detracts from the story.

4 out of 5 stars A very good first novel.......2002-08-15

This is Shields McTavish's first novel, and it is very well written. The plot is good and the action moves right along. He is a skilled writer and has experience in the area in which his story is involved. He was a Canadian military intelligence officer and electronics adviser to their National Defense Headquarters.

The story revolves around the commanding officer of a Canadian fighter squadron, Lt. Cdr. Douglas White, a drug smuggling ring that uses a fake USAF base in Canada to fly drugs in from Mexico, and the shooting down of a Canadian Air Force Arcturus patrol plane by the drug smugglers fighter escorts (Russian built MiG 'Foxbats' showing USAF insignia.) Commander White sets about to bring the mystery to resolution.

Altogether, this is a good story which will hold your interest. The cover art is good, and the publishers have done a good job, with only minor proofreading problems. For example, the word 'dais,' (referring to a speaker's platform) is consistently misspelled 'dias,' and one character's name is variously spelled 'Concorde' and 'Concord.' Small, insignificant errors that do not detract from the reading pleasure.

Altogether, this is a fine story and I'm pleased that Mr. McTavish is working on his second novel.

                      Book Description

Return with Marion Zimmer Bradley in THE FALL OF NESKAYA to the best-selling world of Darkover during the tumultuous era of The Hundred Kingdoms. In a terrible time of strife and war, when this unique fantasy world is divided into a multitude of small belligerent domains vying for power and land, one corrupt, ambitious tyrant will stop at nothing-even the use of terrifying matrix weapons-to control all of Darkover!

Praise for the novels of Darkover: I don't think any series novels have succeeded for me the way Marion Zimmer Bradley's DARKOVER novels did. (Locus)

Literate and exciting. (New York Times Book Review)

I was happy to see this and other older stories by MZB in this form since when I first found her books, sadly, most were out of print. Thank you doing this so that others can read and enjoy her superb works!

                      5 out of 5 stars darkover at it's best.......2004-08-28

when damain deslucio decides that he wants to expand so that he can rule most of darkover, he stops at nothing to get what he wants. he uses bonewater, clingfire, forced marriages and torture to get what he wants. for his ultimate goal puts him in a face to face battle with the hasturs themselves.

this book has very real stories of men, women and children who suffer through this tyrant's quest for power and the characters are so real that one feels that one is actually a part of the novel. the only downfall i had is that i mistakenly read zandru's forge first so some of it was no surprise. but this book is a definite must for all darkover fans.

                      5 out of 5 stars True to Bradley's Vision.......2004-07-20

Many of the Darkover books are set after people from Earth rediscover their long-lost colonists. The clash of cultures makes for good books, but I have personally always been more interested in the Ages of Chaos and the Hundred Kingdoms, when it is said use of laran science for nefarious purposes was widespread. This book, to my great delight, takes place in this time!

This book tells the story of Queen Tanquiel Hastur-Acosta, who escapes the depradations of the conquerer Damien Deslucido and his evil laranzu brother, Rumail. She escapes her besieged castle and makes her way across land to try and reach her kinsmen in Thendara. Along the way, she meets under-keeper Coryn Leynier, whose home has also fallen to the evil Deslucido, who is traveling to his new post at Neskaya tower. They form a deep and lasting mental bond when Coryn saves her life during a raging blizzard. With his help she is able to reach the home of her powerful uncle, King Rafael Hastur II. There she gives birth to her son, the next king of Acosta, and fights the political machinations of Deslucido and tries to regain control of her son's birthright. Finally, when it is discovered that Deslucido can lie under truthspell, King Hastur acts, and the evil marauder is finally defeated. Coryn and the other tower workers in Neskaya and Tramontana are drawn into this terrible battle which rages on the physical world and in the Overworld as well.

I thought this was a very good, engrossing read. Bradley's writing always seemed to me to be sparse on descriptions, very down-and-dirty. So, this book was a pleasant change in some ways, it seemed more complete and satisfied my curiosity. However, the long drawn-out discussions of political machinations and the long battle with Deslucido were a bit too much for me. Some prudent editing would have been nice, IMHO. I kept thinking "Isn't it over YET? I want to get to the ending!"

1 out of 5 stars MZB, like Generalissimo Francisco Franco, is still dead.......2004-01-29

Ms. Bradley's estate continues to churn out "new" works - even though she's been deceased for at least four (4) years. While the works she published while still among the living had incongruities and even contradictions at times, they still remained quite good, especially those after 1970. These new books are formulaic and just plain sad. The continued use of her name as an "author" is vile. While she welcomed others to play in the worlds she created I doubt she, like most people, would endure others putting words in her mouth.

Please let her rest in peace. If you must continue to earn money off her creation don't lie about the source.

This was my first piece of literature by Marion Zimmer Bradely, and becuase of it it won't be the last. I was spellbound by her writing technique. I could hardly set it down. I finished it within two school days and was mesmerized. This was a very good book and I would recommend it to anyone.

Warning: Using this book could be hazardous to your ego! This book deserves any practicing Buddhist's attention. I've been Buddhist for a little over 2 years, and I wouldn't say I'm a very good one, but I feel that in the heart of all of Buddha's Dharma is Bohdichitta, the cultivation of loving-kindness. No book has been more useful to me in this practice; it is basically the mentality necessary to keep us from straying from the path of enlightenment eloquently spoken by The Venerable Chogyam Trungpa. Once one read and contemplates these slogans and their meaning they seem to rest in the back of the mind and as the introduction states they will rise at the time when they are need to stop your habitual mind's process(usually at the first thought). I recommend anyone who truly wants to change they're entire mentality to read this book, and any other book's that are based on loving-kindness or the seven points of mind training slogans.

5 out of 5 stars Modern spin on ancient text! Wonderful!.......2005-09-28

This book will be loved and adored by any person, whether they are experienced buddhists or just looking for some practical ways to deal with life's problems.
Chogyam Trungpa energetically relays an ancient but practical and relevant text to a modern western audience.
Easy to read yet deep and insightful.

4 out of 5 stars Nuggets of wisdom between the slogans.......2003-09-18

I was turned off by the idea of "slogans," and did not read this book the first few times I came across it. However, when I began studying Tong Len, (Unconditional Giving and Taking during the In and Out breath), I found several pages of very good commentary on Tong Len in this book. The slogan says something like, "Unconditional Giving rides the Out Breath, Unconditional Taking rides the In Breath." but when you read what all this means, it is truly the essence of buddhism. (I think this slogan originates from the Way Of The Bodhisattva or Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life by Santideva or Shantideva, which is an excellent book in any of the several English translations now available.) Chogyam Trungpa can be flippant and condescending, which he calls "heavy handed," and explains as a form of compassion. This may or may not be accurate. As a reader, take the parts of this book that resonate with your inner compassion, and let the other parts lie.

I've worked with this book every day for the last 12 years. I used to keep a copy in my desk at work, as well as passed along copies to other spiritual friends. This book will teach you much about how the world relates to you. It has the potential to erase a lot of negative thinking. It could turn you into a people-pleaser! Therefore, it must be used with meditation, and ideally the assistance of a spiritual master. These teachings have the potential to challenge every bit of strength you have. I think Americans have a tough time with Buddhism, as we are acculturated to conduct ourselves in public with self-worth. Whereas the Heart Slogans, adapted from Atisha, who was a student of Buddha, will rub you raw. So I think these teachings shift our awareness from self-esteem towards being more genuine. These practices can conflict with your personal boundaries. If you're a student of psychology, you would want to think about how the Slogans work for establishing respect with colleagues, family, etc. If you want a healthier, simpler, more honest life, this book will take you there. It will show you how you relate to the three poisons, jealousy, attachment and ignorance. This can be detrimental. It's good to have a support-system of like-minded Buddhist friends and teachers.

4 out of 5 stars important techniques and lessons for all.......2002-03-05

What do salty sailors, communists, ad execs, and Tibetan Buddhists have in common? The Power of Slogans! From `Have a Coke and a Smile' to "Be all that you can Be", the brain loves a good saying. This book is Trungpa's translation of the 59 slogans used to instruct Tibetan Buddhists, with his commentary on each. Trungpa is unassailable as an instructor: the 11th generation of a line of chosen Tibetan Trungpas, he went to oxford on a scholarship and then moved to the US in the 1970's where he founded what remain as among the foremost Buddhist/meditative institutions in the country. I tend to believe Buddhism gained a little more than it lost en route to japan, so I prefer the zen stuff, but this book has a lot to offer anyone. Some nitpicking: For a guy who dedicated his life to bringing jargonless Buddhism to the west, the book is a little full of `mystical-sounding foreign words' though thankfully the glossary is very fine. And plenty of important Buddha concepts don't shine through (cause and effect, and the big mirror concepts don't get too much play here) so just make sure this isn't the only book you read on the topic. And some of the slogans are simply not too memorable and consequently lose their force; `always be grateful' is dandy, though `the mahayana instruction for ejection of consciousness at death is the five strengths' seems like an important one that alas probably won't be dancing off too many tongues at the critical moment. Still this is a fine book, a great book for beginners or advanced alike, coming from any tradition whatsoever. & the small format fits well, making it a great book for commutes or travels. Enjoy! (& remember: just because I didn't like the book as much as you doesn't mean you should vindictively vote against my review!)

5 out of 5 stars Small book, big message........2000-05-22

It is always amazing to me that more people don't know the wonderful work that Trungpa did in bringing Buddhism to the West. He was a proponent of loving kindness who skillfully assisted thousands in understanding both the basic precepts of Buddhism, and specific traditions of Tibetan Buddhism as they are now practiced in both East and West.

This small format book is a wealth of information -- more than the mere "slogans" which lead each section. It is a careful revelation of principals and practices one usese to train the mind, emphasizing how one can use compassion and intelligence in dealing with everyday situations. A real gem of a book to read and read again.

Bringing Buddhist teachings to a western mind is no easy task. I find that the material in this book clearly allows one to understand Dharma in a crisp and refreshing light. The ability to apply this to the western life is well stated.

Have you ever had trouble bringing the Buddhist path into everyday usage? Well this book provides one with the ability to do so. I highly recommend it.
