Quicksilver & Shadows.......2005-08-28
This is the second volume in a collection of short stories. The majority of these short stories are either dark fantasy or science fiction. Some are about the Borderlands from Newford. Anyone who collects De Lint should have this, if only to see the progression of his writing talent and how all these different efforts color and shape his later writings. All of De Lint's characters represent each of us, the choices we make when dreams are mislaid, and whether we have the courage to pursue them.
Shows remarkable growth.......2005-05-07
Subterranean Press continues to reveal the early writings of Charles de Lint in this, the publisher's second collection of short stories from the early days of the writer's career. And, while the stories contained in Quicksilver & Shadow are nowhere as detailed or deep as his later works, de Lint shows remarkable growth from the style (and, let's face it, genre choices) exhibited in the previous collection, A Handful of Coppers.
This volume, containing 17 brief tales, focuses on contemporary and dark fantasy, science fiction and children's stories. The best-known among them are doubtlessly the three from Terri Windling's much-lamented Bordertown anthologies: "Stick," "Berlin" and "May This Be Your Last Sorrow." Like many of de Lint's fiction, these tales dig deeply into social issues such as drug use, gang violence and prejudice while retaining a touching personal relationship with the characters involved -- and, at the same time, providing plenty of gripping suspense among spurts of fast-paced action.
Once again, de Lint has opened his past to those of us who weren't lucky enough to be along for the ride from the start. While he has certainly exceeded this level of writing many times over with more recent works, it's fascinating to get a closer look at this chapter in his development in the craft. De Lint fans will want this collection without question; newcomers to his work would enjoy some stories, certainly, but would be wise to begin exploring his worlds elsewhere.

Not very convinving.......2007-05-12
Characters didn't seem real and the sex invoved is too much like her other novels. Seems formulaic.
Very Good Story!.......2006-10-26
I am always looking for stories that have a bit of a twist and this one does.Good character and plot development. I enjoyed reading it.
How is mauling a woman romantic?.......2006-08-30
I could accept the premise of star-crossed lovers seperated, only to be brought back together by unhappy circumstance. Even if the circumstance was the marriage of the heroine to the hero's father. Okay, so the father was evil was orchestrated everything. He was cruel and used the heroine, verbally abusing her as well as being physically rough with her.
So how is the son different from the father? When he gets angry with her (which is most of the time), he grabs her, mauls her, tells her she's trash, while she fights to get away from him. How is it we're supposed to believe she loves him? Their summer romance was when she was 15, and this is some 12 years later. He certainly doesn't rekindle any romantic feelings by being kind.
The sex scenes are embarassing with their euphemisms and overall lameness.
The book wasn't a horrible premise. It was just horribly done. A hero should be likeable and it should be obvious why the heroine wants to be with him.
Brown you are the best!.......2006-04-21
After my last book 'tiger prince' by Mrs Brown i was a bit disappointed in her but this book renewed my faith in her again.
In her romances the hero and herione are not perfect but you love them inspite of their flaws. In this book, Rink first knew caroline when she was of tender age of fifteen. they fell in love but because of some circumstances they were kept apart.Without any explanation from Rink for his running away Caroline found it hard to wait for him forever and took the chance of having respect and money that she always craved for by marrying a rich but older man. Well till now it isn't so bad, is it? But as it happened that older man was Rink's father and Caroline knew it. Now how is that for feeling antipathy for a woman who married the father of the man she loved? And i don't really blame Rink for being angry with her again and again for what she had done.
Caroline wasn't a saint and i don't think any person in her shoes can afford to be anyway. Who knows what i would do if i happened to be in her place? So i wouldn't judge her and would advice other readers to not judge her too.
Both the times Rink came in contact with Caroline she was forbidden for him. That part of this romance was best. Their summer romance so many years back was very sweet. Rink's conscience and desire were in fight with each other. i like this in a romance and i like the build of sexual tension in Sandra brown's novel.
She really is the best!
Dated but enjoyable.......2005-07-15
What would you do if the person you hated most in the world took everything from you, including your mother and the love of your life? And still he was not satisfied.
On his deathbed, Roscoe Lancaster requests that his long absent son come home so that he can see him one last time. His wife complies and the prodigal son is summoned. Of course not on is Rink her stepson, he is also her first (and only) love. Of course Roscoe's motivations for a reunion are not all out of compassion for the son he lost; it is just one more chance to one up him by flaunting his relationship with wife Caroline in Rink's face. Roscoe was the main antagonist who drove the two apart when they were engaging in an elicit relationship (Caroline was 15; Rink was 22 - kinda icky).
Rink cannot help himself and his still intense feelings for Caroline. A stolen kiss here; a grope there. But underlying in his thoughts is that his father made love to her first. Can Rink ever get over his pride and declare his love for Caroline?
"Bittersweet Rain" is a melodramatic love story set against the machinations of a truly evil and desperate man, who loves no one, least of all himself. His contempt for the less than perfect daughter (who loves him unconditionally) makes you want to punch him. There is a lot of chemistry between the two leads; but clunky, dated love scenes (his "maleness"; her "feminine core"). One of the most endearing qualities of the book is the emerging relationship between Rink's sister Laura Jane, and the disabled ranch hand, Steve.
Though a little dated (it was originally written in 1984; re-released in 2000), it was an enjoyable and romantic romp.

Book Description
Bittersweet Rain: Caroline Dawson survived the slow death of her husband, Roscoe Lancaster, the richest man in the county and her senior by three decades. But she feared she might not survive Rink Lancaster, her husband's son. He had introduced Caroline to her first tremulous taste of love - and then broke her heart. Now Rink wants to settle the score.
Sweet Anger: Television newscaster Kari Wynne blamed her shattered life on one man - D.A. Hunter McKee. He hadn't directly caused her husband's death, but he had destroyed his reputation. Now, Kari will begin a desperate search for the truth about her husband's mysterious death...and about the man she wants to hate who somehow awakens within her the kind of passion she has never known before.
Eloquent Silence: Lauri is a dedicated young teacher for the deaf. Her past conceals a wound still unhealed. very enlightening.......2001-01-03
Mary Summer Rain has written a very enlightening book on her personal life. To me, that takes courage; to lay yourself bare like that. Nowhere in this book did I find any hate.
BITTERSWEET.......2000-10-19
...MARY SUMMER RAIN, IS THE MOST VALUABLE SOURCE, I HAVE FOUND,FOR INNER PEACE, AND FINDING A SENSE OF PURPOSE, IN THIS SENSELESSWORLD.
GIVE ME A BETTER ROLE MODEL!.......2000-08-21
It is totally beyond my comprehension how or why ANYONE could want this woman as a source of spiritual enlightment, information, or admiration after reading this book! I was so totally disgusted, shocked and angry. Her justification of guns and giving hate back at unkind people made my mouth fly open! Where is LOVE? Where is compassion? Where is insight? AND, where is "what goes around comes around". I think Mary Summer Rain is a disgrace as any kind of teacher or role model in any type of spiritual capacity. She, and her entire family, came off as angry, bitter, mean spirited lowlife's to me.
I believe the devoted readers took this hard........2000-01-19
This book was a shocker! An absolute must read.I can say with complete honesty, this book rocked my world.Mary brings to light some personal issues that blew me away(because I never expected it)I felt bad(not intention of authoress)because to me this was a friend going through some real tragedy, and I had no way of offering suppport ect...This book taught me so much, ecspeically after reflecting on it.I learned How just because someone is a completed soul or enlightened person doesnt mean life is grand. They have personal problems too. These people ARE your people next door! Just like Summer Rain always said.It took this book to make me understand what she was trying to convey. And I believe there are still many people out there that think they are not SIRITUAL or capable of becoming enlightened beause they have personal problems,or financial.Somehow we have the misdirected mindset that when we are spiritual evrything goes our way.not! This book should reach out to people on a quest for truth, who may be having a problems.(thats not to suggest misery loves company)Just, your not alone....and spiritual people suffer too.they realy are no differant then you.

Description:
The establishment of invasive plant populations is controlled by seed input, survival in the soil seed bank, and effects of soil surface disturbance on emergence, growth, and survival. We studied the invasive vine Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb. (Oriental bittersweet) to determine if seedlings in forest understory germinate from the seed bank or from seed rain. We also conducted a greenhouse experiment to investigate the role of leaf litter mass and physical texture on seedling survival, growth, and allocation. In the understory of an invaded mixed hardwood forest, we measured seed input, seedling emergence with seed rain, and seedling emergence without seed rain. Mean seed rain was 168seedsm^-^2: mean seedling emergence was 107m^-^2, and there was a strong correlation between seed rain and seedling emergence. The ratio of seedlings to seed input (0.61) was close to the seed viability (0.66) leaving very few seeds to enter the seed bank. Seed bank germination under field conditions was low (1seedlingm^-^2). Soil cores were incubated in a greenhouse to determine seed bank viability, and germination from these soil cores did not occur. To determine how litter affects seedling establishment and growth, we measured seedling emergence and biomass allocation in a greenhouse experiment. Seeds were placed below intact and fragmented deciduous leaf litter in amounts ranging from zero to the equivalent of 16Mgha^-^1. Seedling emergence was not affected by fragmented litter, but decreased to
<20% as intact litter increased to 16Mgha^-^1. Increasing litter resulted in greater allocation to hypocotyl and less to cotyledon and radicle, and this effect was greater in intact litter. C. orbiculatus seedlings achieve emergence through forest floor litter through plasticity in allocation to hypocotyl growth. The low survival of C. orbiculatus in the seed bank suggests that eradication of seedling advance regeneration and adult plants prior to seed rain may be an effective control strategy. However, the intact forest floor litter of an undisturbed forest will not prevent seedling establishment.
Book Description
An enduring classic, this book offers a dramatic and prophetic look at the potential consequences of the escalating destruction of Earth. In this nightmare society, air pollution is so bad that gas masks are commonplace. Infant mortality is up, and everyone seems to suffer from some form of ailment. The water is polluted, and only the poor drink from the tap. The government is ineffectual, and corporate interests scramble to make a profit from water purifiers, gas masks, and organic foods. Environmentalist Austin Train is on the run. The Trainites, environmental activists and sometime terrorists, want him to lead their movement. The government wants him in jail, or preferably, executed. The media wants a circus. Everyone has a plan for Train, but Train has a plan of his own. This suspenseful science fiction drama is now available to a new generation of enthusiasts. This replaces 0345347862.

The Top 5 of the Scariest Books I Have Ever Read.......2007-02-23
I agree with what others have said about this book. It is written in a very jerky, unusual style, and can be a bit hard to follow at times. But given that it was written so long ago, it is frighteningly, eerily relevant. I read the book in 2 days (which was a feat considering how it is written). It has stayed with me for weeks.
Current news reports are ones that appear in the book, and without wanting to sound like a doom and gloom pessimist, I have to say....I think we're doomed.
The Sheep Look Up.......2007-02-15
This book is hauntingly familiar as it describes the effects of how we've polluted our planet although it was written more than 35 years ago, before bottled water was commonly bought by most everyone and air pollution ratings were posted on the weather channels. It's a real eye-opener and makes you want to do whatever it takes to clean up our planet so that our children and grandchildren have a healthy place to live.

Remember this.......2006-11-21
I was lucky enough to have found Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar a few weeks ago and enjoyed it so much I looked around for The Sheep Look Up. Wow. How could I have missed reading this classic from over 30 years ago? There are many great reviews of this book here on amazon that acknowledge both the relevance and power of Brunner's vision. It is a more depressing and horrific book to read then a typical genre book due to the convincing portrayal of our culturally driven hubris, denial and greed. The American public has a short memory when it comes to their own complicity with corporate and political atrocities and this book serves as a shocking reminder. When I first read reviews of The Sheep Look Up I was afraid that it might be too didactic or too much of a diatribe to be entertaining, but after the first hour or so I was hooked on its gripping human drama. It is a bit challenging to read; there are lots of characters (more like sketches), and Brunner floods the pages with a cacophony of text from press releases, radio announcements, conversations, etc., that takes time for the reader to assimilate. But unlike a lot of other apocalyptic tales, this one is worth your time.
Back in Print.......2006-05-31
Good to see this book back in print! I have a used hardcover copy that I wouldn't let anyone else get their hands on. Now it is available to everyone so I can say Get your own copy and read it now. The Sheep Look Up is one of the best sci-fi novels as well as one of the best works of fiction I have ever read. Experience it, and read the other reviews here; it's a wild and scary ride.

Book Description
Can there be universal moral principles in a culturally and religiously diverse world? Are such principles provided by a theory of natural law? Jacques response to both questions is "yes."
These essays, selected from the writings of one of the most influential philosophers of the past hundred years, provide a clear statement of Maritain's theory of natural law and natural rights. Maritain's ethics and political philosophy occupies a middle ground between the extremes of individualism and collectivism. Written during a period when cultural diversity and pluralism were beginning to have an impact on ethics and politics, these essays provide a defense of natural law and natural right that continues to be timely.
The first essay introduces Maritain's theory of connatural knowledge - knowledge by inclination - that lies at the basis of his distinctive views on moral philosophy, aesthetics, and mystical belief. The second essay gives Maritain's principal metaphysical arguments for natural law as well as his account of how that law can be naturally known and universally held.
The third essay in this collection explains the roots of the natural law and shows how it provides a rational foundation for other kinds of law and for human rights. In the fourth essay, reflecting his personalism and integral humanism, Maritain indicates how he extends his understanding of human rights to include the rights of the civic and of the social or working person.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best if not the best.......2002-10-26
Maritain has a goldmine of information in this little book for those interested in the tradtional view of Natural Law. I have read several books on the Natural Law, some very good ones, but they all left me with a feeling of incompleteness. Maritain does not do this, he fills the gap here and covers an immense amount of ground in such a short space. Worthy of special mention is the relationship of human rights to the Natural Law and how rights must be founded on it - for without Natural Law there is no true obligation.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the moral and political applications of Natural Law.
