Winner of the 1969 American Library Assoc.'s first Gay Book Award
Set in the nineteenth century, Isabel Miller's classic lesbian novel traces the relationship between Patience White, an educated painter, and Sarah Dowling, a farmer, whose romantic bond does not sit well with the puritanical New England farming community in which they live. Ultimately, they are forced to make life-changing decisions that depend on their courage and their commitment to one another.
First self-published in 1969 in an edition of 1,000 copies, it garnered increasing attention to the point of receiving the American Library Association's first Gay Book Award. Patience & Sarah is a historical romance that was a touchstone for the burgeoning gay and women's activism of the late 1960s and early 1970; it celebrates the joys of an uninhibited love between two strong women with a confident defiance that remains relevant today.
This edition features an appendix of supplementary materials, as well as an introduction by Emma Donoghue, whose numerous books include Stirfry, Hood, and Life Mask, which was shortlisted for a 2005 Lambda Literary Award and the Ferro-Grumley Award.

Loved - Loved - Loved it !!!.......2005-11-19
This is a terrific novel that should not be missed. This is a timeless classic so well written you would think the author made a career in writing historic literature.
You actually feel the deep emotion that they have for each other. It's so strong that you sometimes forget the humor that is laced throughout. There are some powerful scenes that reflect the harsh times where women did not have a say in their own affairs.
There is as much depth in one chapter as you will get in entire novels. The writing simply flows and you don't put the book down until you notice the day has gone dark and lunch and dinner time have passed you by. Wonderful characters so rich in details that you wonder about them long after the novel ends.
I couldn't be happier by the authors other books - if you enjoyed Patience and Sarah you will be delighted with Side by Side.
You will not find a better novel to read
You could feel the passion.......2005-03-01
A touching story of two women who fall in love and defy their families and society to be together. Nothing vulgar or obscene. The author did a wonderful job of portraying the genuine love these two women felt for eachother despite very different upbringings. A quick and enjoyable read.
a story about authentic love and committment.......2004-09-28
A lovely story of finding genuine love, and finding this personal awareness and passion, long before society was willing accept same-gender lovers. Always believable, highly literate, this novel will inspire you to seek out and build a love such as Patience and Saran had for yourself. In this current time where many attactions appear to evaporate in the morning sun, partners will want to read this together. Patience and Sarah will inspire you and your love to build an enduring bond.
Warm and Humorous.......2003-03-20
Miller's writing ability is to be highly commended. She manages to combine warmth, love and humor into each page. Having read one too many "small blond" books, it's refreshing to find a lesbian love story in which the writing technique does not become irritating after the first chapter.
Also, this book contains no elderly, non-judgemental housekeepers. The women have to figure things out all by themselves.
Best line in the book: "I'm not playing you, Darling, I'm landing you."
Melting...A Classic.......2001-11-26
This wonderful book used to be one of the few positive lesbian books out there. I know when I found it, years ago, I was comforted by the portrayal of two women making their way in a world that does not want them to be together. They lack even the words to describe their feelings for each other. When one describes her physical reaction to the other's lovemaking as "melting" I thought that was a perfect description for the book. It made all my cynicism melt away for a while.
It's a period piece and a well-written romantic tale that no true romantic will want to miss.

Book Description
Following the strike waves of 1989 and 1991, many commentators expected Russian workers to play a decisive role in determining the course of transition. Workers have stoically endured a catastrophic decline in living standards, a loss of security and wage delays of six months or more. Sarah Ashwin’s book directly confronts this paradox, dissecting the apparent "patience" of Russian workers through an original analysis of the forms of social integration fostered within the Soviet and post-Soviet enterprise, and an examination of the barriers that have prevented trade unions from effectively representing workers’ interests during the transition. Ashwin's analysis is based on an ethnographic case study of a South Kuzbass coal mine. Starting from interviews with workers and trade union activists, Ashwin relates large-scale political, social and economic changes to the dilemmas of everyday life, showing how workers’ responses to reform are influencing the post-communist recomposition of the Russian state and economy.

A LOT OF DENIAL AND CONFUSION.......2005-09-29
This is a follow-up to Rocky Mountain Man - the story of Betsy Gable Hunter - Joshua's sister.
Joshua Gable is the head of the Gable family and head honcho of the ranch. Sheep no less! Which does not set well with cattle ranchers.
He is 36 and determined not to let any woman rule his life.
His story is set in some nasty weather with loads of snow, a blizzard even. His sheep being killed and someone determined to get rid of him.
Claire Hamilton is about 23 and married to an abusive, drinking lout. You know what hits the fan when Hamilton is found dead out back of his barn.
Joshua figures that Claire killed her husband in self defense.
She is in the process of mis-carrying her baby and figures that Joshua killed her husband. What a mix-up!
I was in one white-out once and never want to go through that again - I don't know how these people of Montana survive.
Rick and Reed Hamilton wanted Claire and her property with the help of Deputy Logan. They proved to be as bad as Claire's husband, Ham for abuse.
Claire was determined never to let another man control her life.
Yeah, well the women don't last long out there without a man.
Men prove to be predators, as bad as the wolves.
Joshua intends to keep a close watch on Claire and protect her from her wicked in-laws. And he finally solves the murder of his father.
For two people who are addiment about surviving alone they sure have an intense attraction for each other.
On the side, Joshua does not like the mountain man who is going to marry his sister, Betsy.
There is a bit of friendly ribbing going on between the Gable brothers as they track down Claire's draft horses, Thor and Loki.
Yup! the ending needed to be a bit more rounded out - but all in all it was an excellent story. Strong characters - good pace - and "Brrrr!" a bit cold.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -
A solid read but lacking by story's end........2005-08-19
I usually enjoy reading Jillian Hart and her touching romances, but there was something missing when it came to the end of this book. It felt as though the ending was written in haste. The rest of the story was built up but then there was no culmination for the characters; the reader was never treated to their passion nor consumation of their love. Very disappointing.

Book Description
If roughly 50 percent of marriages fail, what about the other 50 percent? Are those couples who stay together necessarily happy? No. In fact, many marriages that remain intact are miserable, some are just mediocre, and some are only pretty good. A mere 7 percent are really great--in fact, exceptional.
If less-than-exceptional marriages are formed by men from Mars and women from Venus, what planet do exceptional couples come from? What do exceptional couples know or do that others don't? And can what they know be taught? Most marriage research and writing has focused on analyzing bad marriages and finding ways to help couples in trouble. This book, on the other hand, looks at the happiest, most successful couples and exposes their secrets so that others can learn and benefit.
The Exceptional Seven Percent is about the rules, attitudes, and behaviors practiced in exceptional marriages, based on solid research, validated by the author's own professional observations, and ultimately tested in his own marriage with fabulous results. It helps couples take an okay or pretty good marriage and make it extraordinary. Each chapter examines in detail one of the nine basic characteristics of exceptional couples and explains how to make that trait flourish in one's own marriage. Quizzes and worksheets in each chapter help direct couples to areas in their marriage that need the most work.
The secrets are out--all nine of them. Let the good lovin' begin!

Customer Reviews:
I was a little disappointed.......2007-04-03
I generally like Christie Golden books. However, this story was rather boring and safe. It was a quick read and I kept hoping it would get better. It has a predictable plot and not much action. The characters seemed muted and off. Seven sounded mechanical, Janeway shallow and the Doctor was dumbed down. This book is just ok. I've read much better. Hope this review helps. Section 31 by Dean Wesley Smith is more true to characters.
Not one of Christie Golden's best.......2005-03-04
I usually enjoy Christie Golden's books, the "Dark Matters" trilogy was especially good, I thought. So when I saw this book I decided to try it. And unfortunetly I was kind of let down. The plot was fine, but the characters didn't feel like themselves. Seven sounded more like Data from tng then herself. And there were several times when I was reading it that I said out load "Janeway doesn't say things like that".
Also a "comic relief" scene between seven and the doctor about the birds came out with a poorly written "Whose on First" feel to it. I wouldn't have minded it so much if the scene wasn't a pretty important part of the story.
The plot slow to pick up but once it did I enjoyed it. Unfortunetly this book came out before an episode of the series where seven has the same kind of multiple personality disorder and this story pales in comparison with that.
I would recommend this book to those who read a lot of trek books, but if this is your first time I would suggest picking up something else, like maybe Battle Lines.
An extremely well done Voyager book!.......2002-07-21
When Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) joined the cast of Voyager I thought she was a great addition to the show. Not unlike other people though, I felt she was way over used to the detriment of the other characters and their development. So it was with this trepidation that I approached this book. However, knowing the quality of Christie Golden's past works I jumped right into the book.
What a wonderful surprise, Seven on Nine is an absolutely brilliant book with a great plot line and really good villains. In my opinion, past trek books with insectoid species were not done very well. In this the author uses an insectoid species and does it very well. Without giving too much away, let's just say that Seven of Nine is an absolutely great story that is hard to put down. If you've not read it yet, you need to. Unfortunately it appears to be out of publication already. It's definitely worth a little extra money to order this one through [other sources]! Thank you to the author for this one.
A good Trek novel....even for a Star Wars fan.......2002-06-12
I'll admit I favor Star Wars over Star Trek, and I say that proudly. The only reason I like NG and Voyager is because of the Borg. When I saw this novel about Seven of Nine, the female Borg on Voyager, I checked it out. I was very impressed, it had a good plot and it showed a side of Seven that was rarely seen, the human side. Also, the suspense kept me reading until it was finished. All in all, it was a great book and I highly recommend it. PS All you Trekkies turn away from the Dark Side and become one with the Force (I always wanted to say that.)

Book Description
Of all the diverse races and civilizations encountered by Starfleet, none have been as fearsome and unstoppable as the cybernetic life-form known as the Borg. Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise considered them the closest thing to pure evil that he had ever faced.
So who could have guessed that an unrepentant Borg could become a valuable crew member aboard a Federation starship?
Here, complete in one volume, are the scripts for the original episodes of Star Trek: Voyager® that brought Seven of Nine aboard Captain Janeway's ship. These powerful and thought-provoking narratives trace her tumultuous development from an anonymous Borg drone to an unique and exceptional individual, whose rediscovery of her own lost humanity has only just begun.
Relive the drama and conflict that have made Seven of Nine one of the most fascinating characters on television today -- and in the depths of the Delta Quadrant.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, so much fun to read...........2007-02-16
I just loved this book. It contains six Star Trek Voyager scripts which cover Seven-of-Nine's major episodes from Season Four (Scorpion 1 & 2, the Raven, The Omega Directive, One, and Hope and Fear).
It was fascinating to see what the actors have to work with when they say their lines. I loved reading the little commentaries in the script. Here's a sample from the end of "One".
Seven of Nine: I don't require nourishment at this time. (beat)
I...felt the need for....companionship.
Everyone stares at her. This is the most vulnerable admission
she's ever made. There's a moment of sympathy, and then, to
break the tension -
Paris: After a month with only the Doctor for company...I can
understand it.
and so on.
There are also 16 pages of pictures in the center of the book, in full color.
With the extraordinarily low prices from third party sellers (Amazon doesn't carry the book at this writing), there is no reason for any Voyager fan not to own this wonderful script book.
Great for people who came into the series late!.......2001-07-01
I got into Voyager in the last season, and Seven immediately caught my attention- how did she come to be on Voyager, what was her life like before she was assimilated, ect. This book was great for me since I missed the fourth season, when she came to Voyager. Highly recommended for others in the same situation.
It is a very interesting book........1999-07-25
I liked this book alot. It was combined of different stories of Seven of Nine. It shows her quest of becoming part of the crew and to be trusted. My favorite one was "One".
Relax!.......1999-05-12
Relax, people. It is simply a bunch (6) of scripts! It was interesting, though, to see the actual piece of paper that makes ::Voyager:: episodes what they are. Also a good investment if you are thinking about submitting a script to Paramount. It must be in this form for them to accept it!
Not everything we hoped but a good start.......1999-03-16
One thing that was really disappointing was the fact that there were no commentaries. Especially for people who are into writing screenplays it is nice to get some tips or at least information from people who make decisions and are successful

Didn't Live Up.......2007-07-03
I absolutely love "The James Bond Lifestyle Seminar," but this audiobook fell short. The plot was decent, but nothing better than you'd expect based on the synopsis. The main character is supposed to be 33 years old, yet his voice sounds like an old man. He sounds very unsure of himself. Also, a lot more could have been done with the sound effects. They did not immerse me in the scenes, as another reviewer claimed.
I never wanted it to end!! Fabulous!.......2007-01-16
Mr Kyriazi's production of Hard Rock Lovers was just fantastic! I was on the edge of my seat on a daily basis! I put the audio book on my iPod and listened while I jogged. I gotta say it motivated me to get out there and I am so sad it is over! I cannot wait for his next Audio production!
The story is fantastic, gripping and sexy. I absolutely loved it!
Bravo!!!!
An all-star cast of my generation! I swooned over Rod Taylor and Robert Culp!.......2006-05-22
Wow! My sister pointed me to this audio book and I couldn't believe my ears. I just relaxed on my bed to listen and was absolutely delighted with the movie-quality of the sound effects. Not only is this a masterful, well-written plot, it's also a quality production. The best I've heard.
And those stars that the magnificent author/director Paul Kyriazi lined up for this special version of his book!!! Well, all I can say is that I remember swooning each time I saw any of them on the big screen. (I hope my hubby doesn't read this.) But when I saw Rod Taylor--who narrates this story, with such a come-hither voice--starring in The Birds with that gorgeous Tippi Hedren, I almost fainted. Yes, he was that much of a hunk ... and still is, according to my sister!
Incidentally, people used to say I looked like Tippi. Ah-hhh, memories ... But getting back to this audio book, I loved it to pieces.
Keep up the excellent work, Mr. K. You're terrific, and almost as handsome as the great Rod! Ciao, baby ...
WONDERFUL cast, beautifully performed, an EXCITING thrilling journey you won't forget!.......2006-03-15
From the moment Hard Rock Lovers comes on ... it takes you by the hand and mind, and immediately draws you into this intriquing story, narrated by the imcomparable Rod Taylor, of revenge, love, lust, cold reality and spiritual enlightenment.
Robert Culp kept me laughing with his perfect low-life agent performance, always the best! James Darren was the perfect rock star, mean, talented but sad, his performance was # 1. Ishtar Uhvana was great as Medusa, she added the sweetness to keep some reality in the rock world and her ending dialoque brought tears to my eyes. Loved Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris was brilliant as the evil Reynaldo, and Nefta Perry as Connie played the perfect Rosie Perez.
The ending gives you hope and leaves you with happy feelings. You will want to play it again and again; it only gets better each time you listen.
Paul Kyriazi is my hero. I am his BIGGEST fan.
Thank you Paul for the fun and exciting adventure!
"Hard Rock Lovers".....Beautifully done!!.......2006-03-14
The "Hard Rock Lovers" audio book was not at all what I expected, but what a wonderful surprise! It's a twisted, tangled web of events played out by a handful of multi-leveled, intertwined characters. The story is well written, beautifully told and convincingly enacted centering on the heights of a successful rock star and the terrible costs that are paid when that success is abused. People and events are manipulated by all the characters to satisfy their own needs and agenda.
"Good" and "evil" are blurred. "Life" and "death" are blurred. Relationships are blurred, but the irony of fate is boldly presented and it's made abundantly clear that our "next" existence offers another chance to hopefully do better. The inevitability of change, the subtle and sometimes dramatic interrelationships between cause and effect as well as the ever-present, ever-looming scales of divine and poetic justice are persistent threads. A beautiful blending of drama and melodrama are used to develop both the story and the characters. The audio presentation is top-notch entertainment, particularly when you consider that all acting is accomplished solely through vocal artistry. The actors do a fantastic job of inviting the listener into their world and moving you effortlessly through the story.
I really enjoyed listening to this audio book. It is wonderful from start to finish and my congratulations go out to all involved. It's a winner on all levels.

Book Description
Captain Alan William Frank Sutton's enthralling biography starts when, as a young midshipman he was in command of a small rowing cutter returning a potentially mutinous crew to the battle-cruiser HMS Repulse in which he served. Amazingly it ends in the open cockpit of a Fairy Swordfish torpedo bomber during the legendry night attack which destroyed the Italian fleet at Taranto.
This biography has been written with the full cooperation of Captain Sutton who has given the author every detail of his lengthy naval ship and airborne career during World War II.

Product Description
The two things that Wilson Williams likes best about 3rd grade are drawing and taking care of the class pet, Squiggles the hamster. What he likes the least are timed multiplication tests. Why think about all those numbers when he could be drawing pictures of Squiggles? With gentle humor, Claudia Mills works through a common childhood problem to a surprising resolution.
Book Description
Why is the cross the crux of Christianity? What are the meaning and significance of the atomement? The Bible uses a host of terms to illuminate the answers to these questions: covenant, sacrifice, the Day of Atonement, Passover, redemption, reconciliation, propitiation, justification. In plain English Leon Morris explains each of these words, thus opening up for students, pastors and teachers the fuller biblical dimension of God's great salvation.
Customer Reviews:
Lack of Respect for Gospel Truth.......2006-05-17
This book does not respect the Gospel of the suffering of Jesus Christ on earth. If it did, it would spend more time talking about the guilt of the Jews. The Gospels spend many chapters and many pages describing the guilt of the Jews. For Dr. Morris not to do this is intellectually dishonest and disrespectful of the Gospel's own account of what the Jews did. Why would God spend so much time talking about the Jewish guilt if He did not want the churches of Jesus Christ to preach it and teach it. Dr. Morri's skirting of the issue shows what is wrong with Evangelical Christians today. Evangelicalism has become a theology that follows a certain interpretation rather than respecting the Truth of the Gospel. That is why evangelical preachers no longer preach against Jews. Why did St. Stephen preach against the Jews? Why did St. Paul preach against the Jews? Why did Jesus Christ preach against the Jews and call them the children of the devil in the Gospel of John? Because God wants the church to preach this way. Today's evangelical preachers do not respect the Bible and do not honor God. This is evident in their attempt to hide the guilt of Jews in killing Christ. The New Testament certainly opposes such cowardice on the part of evangelical preachers.
Christ's Atonement Must Be Remembered In Historical Context.......2006-05-17
This book is horrible at treating the factor of history. This is only a theological treatise about Christ's work of salvation. If we look at the Bible (both in the Old Testament and the New Testament), historical context is important. Prof. Morris should talk a little bit more about the Jewish guilt in killing Christ and what consequences that has. Prof. Morris denies the whole prophetic tradition in ignoring this important element. Thus, this book is neither wholly biblically-centered or beneficial to the long-term goals of the Christian church in light of the Word of God.
It doesn't get any better than this.......2004-09-23
The Atonement - Its meaning and significance is one of the best books ever written on this subject. Much more readable then his work The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross which covers the same material in a much more scholarly manner, this work will open up for you the treasures of the cross of Christ. There is nothing more central to Christianity than the death of Christ - what does it mean. His chapters deal with - covenant, sacrifice, the day of atonement, the passover, redemption, reconciliation, propitiation, and justification. These are Biblical themes that are just not taught on in today's seeker friendly churches - to the hurt of all who truly believe on Christ. Though readable, this work is not short on material. Great work for a Bible class, Bible study, Sunday school class or home Bible study. Also a great gift for your pastor if he doesn't already have this book. Give it to him as a gift and some of it will certainly end up in his sermons. If you are looking for additional material on this subject see John Murray's Redemption Accomplished and Applied. Together these two works rock and will give the reader significant understanding of these vital Christian doctrines. Enjoy!
trimming a complex concept down to essentials.......2001-10-18
I find the word very confusing, it's so long. But it's basically at-one ment, i.e. becoming one, and I hear further it's by means of substitution. This book is the best book I've seen to explain all the big words on the subject, even though I still find this book hard to follow sometimes. Hey, are we talking becoming whole and complete and so forth by integrating all of our emotions and so forth? I think so, and this RELIABLE scholar is dedicating a lot of his life to making it easier for the rest of us to comprehend this message.
The standard work on the atonement.......2000-12-16
There are some books that do such a wonderful job covering a single biblical concept that you wonder, why would anyone else want to write on the topic? I believe Bible scholar Leon Morris has accomplished such a fete with his book on atonement. Although not a skim-through kind of book that might appeal to all Christian laypeople, it is not difficult to read this book word by word and come away with a far greater appreciation of how God worked in both the Old and New Testaments when it comes to the atonement of God. (Trust me, he could have been much more technical and have lost many average readers, but thankfully he doesn't.) He fully describes the words associated with the atonement, including Passover, redemption, reconciliation, and justification. Salvation is such a rich idea, it's a shame many Christians go through life not fully understanding the gift that they've been given.
