Book Description
From the award-winning author of The Gardens of Kyoto comes this witty and incisive novel about the lives and attitudes of a group of women -- once country-club housewives; today divorced, independent, and breaking the rules.
In Our Kind, Kate Walbert masterfully conveys the dreams and reality of a group of women who came into the quick rush of adulthood, marriage, and child-bearing during the 1950s. Narrating from the heart of ten companions, Walbert subtly depicts all the anger, disappointment, vulnerability, and pride of her characters: "Years ago we were led down the primrose lane, then abandoned somewhere near the carp pond."
Now alone, with their own daughters grown, they are finally free -- and ready to take charge: from staging an intervention for the town deity to protesting the slaughter of the country club's fairway geese, to dialing former lovers in the dead of night.
Walbert's writing is quick-witted and wry, just like her characters, but also, in its cumulative effect, moving and sad. Our Kind is a brilliant, thought-provoking novel that opens a window into the world of a generation and class of women caught in a cultural limbo.

Unreadable.......2007-03-31
I found this book unreadable, the writing style is choppy in the extreme, and I felt nothing for the protagonists, of whom there are too many. I always thought books were supposed to enlighten us about people we may not be like or know personally, that we would actually learn something in the process of reading the book. These people are unlikeable and unlikely.
The book is overall too mannered.
I Didn't Even Finish the Book.......2007-03-27
This was a selection for my book club and less than 40% of our members bothered to finish the book. Enough said.
A Wonderful Rendering.......2007-03-27
Walbert is a gifted writer. This book evokes the theme of suburban love and loneliness, told in a confident and eloquent voice.
a book that stays with you........2007-03-24
I first read this book when it was published in hard back, after reading the NY Times review. Then when it was published in paperback and a friend bought it for me, I read it again. This is a novel to hold on to, and to read again and again.
Compelling look at an often-ignored group.......2006-01-29
This is the kind of book that you tear through, because each story (in a collection of interconnected short stories that share common characters) is more compelling than the one before--and then you're disappointed when it's over. We are given glimpses into the back stories of these complicated and interesting 60- and 70somethings, not having read anything about them since they were characters in 1950s fiction or, perhaps a better analogy, any pillbox-hat-and-white-glove-wearing society woman from 1950s American film. The ladies in these stories are the women whom those Eisenhower-era women turned out to be and the story of how they came to be where they are is really good reading. You will not be disappointed.

Book Description
Dear Friends,
I thought it was nonsense when the palm reader told me and my sisters that we'd been born with a bad luck love line. I paid no mind to her claim that only the truest love could overcome the family curse. After all, I was a reformed McBride Menace -- it wouldn't do for me to believe in such foolishness!
Better I had listened.
Now our family faces its biggest crisis ever, and I've had to turn for help to the most notorious man in town. Luke Garrett was born to be a hero -- it's such a puzzle that he ended up an outlaw. Maybe I'm foolish to trust a mysterious, alluring gunslinger to protect me as I pursue this vital quest. I don't care that Luke has secrets -- I'm willing to take the risk. As I travel the badlands of Texas, I'll trust him to guard my person. It's up to me to protect my heart. If only Luke didn't appeal to the Menace in me . . .
Wish me good luck . . . I think I'll need it!

Customer Reviews:
Great read!.......2005-06-28
I really enjoyed this book. Fans of historicals-don't miss out on this one. Best western I've read in a LONG time. :) Luke Garrett will be a hero that readers remember! I'm already looking forward to the next book.
Talk about redundant...............2005-06-27
The premise as noted in the other reviews is totally accurate. The hero is a hunk of the first order....and Maribeth is also quite a gal. The dialogue is cute. BUT.......the underlying thoery of the bad luck curse is soooo stupid and really unclear to begin with. The second thing I thoroughly disliked is the repeated reference to the 'mcbride menaces'. How many times does it have to be repeated to understand that Kat, Mari and sister Emma were always into mischief. I found this so annoying I nearly didn't finish the book but the hunk kept me turning pages.
Don't plan on reading this author again....I wanted to give it a 2 but the characters are well written and fair is fair....
A delightful tale from a talented writer.......2005-06-16
Geralyn Dawson has quietly been gathering a lot of praise with Bad Luck Wedding Cake and Bad Luck Wedding Dress books. Well, she is back with another Bad Luck book, though lacking that appellation in the title. Her Bodyguard, the Bad Luck Curse jumps a generation as Trace's daughter Maribeth has her tale. Two sisters are featured in supporting roles, so fans of Ms. Dawson are guaranteed at least two more Bad Luck stories.
The book takes up in San Antonio in the late 1880s. It's the eve of Emma's wedding, sister to Mari and Kat. They are the famed McBride Menaces. They go to visit a fortuneteller and is told their family come from Scotland, and in fine Highland tradition, the seer warns Clan McBride is cursed and only true love can break it. She warns the three girls they must find their one true love to end their doomed legacy.
A couple years later, Emma is widow, so we assume her husband wasn't her true love to break the McBride's Curse. Kate's fallen for an actor, but Mari is more settled and owns her own candy store. Once day Luke Garrett comes into the store. Daddy dearest knows this blackguard and tries to stop him for flirting with Mari.
In Kat's quest for love with her actor, she is trapped in a fire in the theatre. Only Mari refuses to believe her sister died. She is determined to find her, and dashing Luke won't permit the sweet miss from the sweet store to go gadding about. But this presents problems for Luke in more ways that one. The Brazos Valley Gang are tearing up the countryside, and while her father thinks Luke an Outlaw - he's just plan law, a Texas Ranger. So it's up to Ranger Luke to become Mari's bodyguard. Look has to protect Mari and his Outlaw cover so it make romancing Mari tough.
It's a delightful tale. Dawson proves she is a wonderful writer, with a skillful weaving of this gentle heartwarming tale. Mari is a heart-stealer, with her caring about her sisters, especially Kat, never giving up hope when everyone else did. There are surprises along the way in a book that delivers from start to finish. It leaves the reader eager for Kat's and Emma's story. Dawson is one fine Western Romance writer, breathing new life into the genre.
3.5 Stars........2005-06-03
Back in the Bad Luck Wedding Series, readers first met the McBride Menances, three mischief loving sisters bent on wrecking havoc and having fun. Emma, Kat, and Mari would give Huck Finn, the Weasley twins, and Tristan Farnon a run for the money and lives. Growing up hasn't changed them much. Love, however, as the song says, changes everything, at least to a degree. Emma marries and is widowed in only months, then loses her youngest sister in a tragic fire. However, Mari gets a clue that indicates Kat is still alive, and sets off to find the truth. With her is Kat's lover's brother. Luke fights with her at every turn, but she finds it stimulating. Once the mystery of what happened to Kat is solved, Mari might be willing to solve the mystery of love.
Her Bodyguard is nothing new. Fans of this particular formula will find it an exceptionally pleasing book. Mari follows in the steps of Jo March as the unconventional sister who takes care of her siblings. Those who have followed the series that began with the Bad Luck Wedding Dress and Bad Luck Wedding Cake will enjoy seeing how the imps grew to adulthood.

enjoyable Texas historical .......2005-06-02
In 1888 San Antonio, on the eve of Emma's wedding, she ands her siblings (Mari and Kat), the renowned McBride Menaces visit fortune teller Baobh who tells them their two families go way back to Scotland together. Baobh explains that the Clan McBride curse can only be broken by true love; to find true love the girls must first find their own true nature.
Two years later Emma is a widow while Kat believes she loves an actor; Mari loves her candy store. Outlaw Luke Garrett enters Mari's shop to purchase something for his sweet tooth, but instead compares Mari's kisses to her chocolate kisses over the protective objection of her father, who knows the bounder too well. Not long afterward, Mari rejects the common belief that Kat died in a theater fire. She vows to find her sibling; Luke cannot allow her to wander around as the deadly Brazos Valley gang is nearby although protecting her probably means revealing he is a Texas Ranger. As they travel from one caper to another, Mari begins to find out who she is and her essence reflects her love for HER BODYGUARD.
The McBride curse turns to the next generation (see the Bad Luck trilogy) as Trace's daughter Mari stars with her two sisters providing strong secondary support. Luke is an intriguing individual who desires the confectionary store owner although he knows he must not compromise his cover. Still he cannot resist comparing chocolate kisses to Mari's kisses and when she goes on her quest, he knows where his loyalty lies. Fans of western romances will want to read Geralyn Dawson's latest Texas historical starring one of the Menaces and HER BODYGUARD.

Book Description
The Rich Girl
Why would someone try to kidnap Lili Kavanaugh? She's a shoe designer, for heaven's sake! It was just a fluke -- she certainly doesn't need a bodyguard, despite her overprotective family's opinion.
Enter Matt Hawkins: tall, dark, and dangerous bodyguard extraordinaire. A man who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. A man who makes Lili shiver -- and not from fear. And a man who refuses to see Lili as more than a job, even though she's seen the heat in his eyes when he looks at her. Well...she'll just have to fix that!
vs. The Big Bad Wolf
All Matt wants is the fee he'll collect from this job to finally start his own agency. But Lili's zest for life points up how tunnel-visioned he's become. So when she demands to know if he doesn't want more out of life, what can a strong man say...except "I do"?
Customer Reviews:
not bad at all.......2007-03-30
ok, so we have a shoe designer who comes from a wealthy background who is almost kidnapped. her family hires her a bodyguard, and in walks matt. he is a tough guy from the wrong side of the tracks who has a chip on his sholder.
the story wasn't bad at all. i liked the back story about rose and joey, but sometimes it seemed more thought out than the main story. the split story got a little distracting in some places, but it wasn't too bad at all. all the talk about shoes was very intereting, and didn't distract from the story like i was afraid it would. to be perfectly honest, i agree with another reviewer that one of the best parts of the book was the lecture lili gives about shoes.
this is a good light romance, that doesn't require too much thought. it was pretty well written, with lots of interesting side bits. however, the main characters seemed a little forced to me. also the number of times they were interupted or otherwise prevented from... 'consumating their relationship' was kind of ridiculous. also, the chip on matt's sholder got old fast, and lili was a bit pushy for my taste.
that being said, it wasn't a bad book. it was a nice distraction, and i would recommend it to someone looking for a nice light read, or someone who really likes shoes :)
I love the shoes!.......2005-08-19
I should start by saying that my least favourite kind of heroine is the poor little rich girl. To some extent Lili is this character - definitely rich and a little spoilt. However, Lilly is also funny, hardworking and outrageous. It is hard not to admire her spunk - you certainly don't spend the whole book wanting to shake some sense into her (well except for when she demands to go swimming at the YMCA when Matt first starts acting as her bodyguard and then does something quite inappropriate at the poolside).
The plot is nice and twisty, if a little long-winded. All of the information about shoes is fascinating and I think that the lecture Lili gives on shoes is one of the best parts of the whole book - so sexy and fun. It made me want to parade around in some high heels myself. Lili and Matt clearly have chemistry, and their reaction to each other is fun to read about. Matt is tough and protective and Lili is feminine and feisty. At the end of the day Lili's reaction to the fact that Matt is a bodyguard is a bit overdone - for example, when Matt steps in to stop a suspicious looking man from chatting her up at a bar she and her friend seem take it badly, when in reality Matt is just doing is job. In the same way, Matt's endless protestations about why he doesn't fit into Lili's world are completely unfounded. Matt earns a six-figure salary - if that doesn't make him financially well-off then I don't know what does. Most people earn a low five-figure salary, so clearly Matt is a self-made man and should be proud. Then again, it seemed that Matt actually had quite low self-esteem in this area, which I thought was an interesting angle for a romance novel, if not exactly a `turn on'.
Overall the book is good, with plenty of light-hearted moments as well as gun-battles and action. The author pays close attention to clothes and shoes (in line with the heroine's job as a shoe designer), which I liked a lot. The fact that Lili was outrageous at times made me like her, she was a real `character'. I would class this book in the same category as To Die For, a book by Linda Howard where the heroine was nothing like my preferred type of heroine (down-to-earth and resourceful balanced with being a little vulnerable at times). The book is fun enough to carry this poor-little-rich-girl kind of heroine without making me want to hurl. Recommended as a light, escapist read.

Can't get worked up about it........2002-09-12
The author turned me off this book in the first few pages, when the lead character, Lili, reacts to the stress of an attempted kidnapping by coming on to her brand new bodyguard, rubbing her body against his to see if he'll react. Excuse me? All I could think was: what kind of promiscuous idiot does that? Throughout the rest of the book, I couldn't shake the feeling of being sorry for the bodyguard, Matt, for ending up with her. I don't think this author writes women well. Her character Matt was okay, but Lili? Even after this beginning, when things could only get better, you never really get a feel for her. And even when the author writes from a woman's point of view, she sounds like a man. Hint: when writing a romance, don't describe the blunt physicality of making love. This book was vaguely interesting because of the bit of mystery involving gangsters and a collectible pair of shoes (that's unique) but the romance? 373 pages and I'm sure glad it's over.
A decent read.......2002-09-02
I have to confess that the only reason that got Her Bodyguard was it was one the of the books that recommenned to me. It was an okay read, but Lili character seem a bit unbelievible to me. As a reader, I couldn't relate the character and I think that is important in order for the reader to enjoy a book. I read Her Bodyguard but its not a book that I will be keeping.
Not quite 4 stars, but more than 3!.......2002-05-08
I purchased this because it was on my recomendations. I found it to be a fun and entertaining read.
This book did not make it to my keeper collection, but I will read other books from this author. I hate it when authors guess about something because it sounds good. For instance, when the heroine asks to see her bodyguards gun. He hands it to her and checks the safety and then warns her after taking the clip out that there is still a round in the chamber. 2 Major problems, no one trained in guns ever hands over a weapon w/ammunition in it, espcecially a round chambered, and 2 Glocks do not have safetys. The only safety is that the trigger has to be pulled.
After reading that it was harder for me to by his professionalism, and this is where it lost me a bit.
Very original and refreshing storyline. Good way to pass the time. I would recommend reading it.

#4 of THE MEN OF MYSTERY - INTROD IN #2.......2006-01-04
Cover did not do it justice.
3 more men were introduced [in name only] in THE STRANGER SHE KNEW - And I am happy to meet these men.
Strange attraction? try pheromones! They work.
Ex-CIA operative Grey Sellers is prevailed upon to take up the lowly job [lowly because of his specialized training] of bodyguard of the reluctant heiress Valerie Beaufort.
Because of her injury when she was 13, now 20 years later she has a number of self-image hang-ups.
She has spent the last 10 years as a horse breeder in virtual isolation. Why would she need a bodyguard?
Her father was the founder and co-owner of Av-Tech - you know, hush, hush contracts.
With his death we are introduced to his partners and friends of Val.
Porter Johnson - Billy Clemens - Harp Springfield and Emory Hunter and the head of Av-Tech Security, Autry Carmichael.
Why would she need a bodyguard when she had the help of these men? Well the death of a bodyguard shook up her reasoning.
Grey was lucky he was not the one in the bunkhouse.
Val is prideful and distrusting.
Grey is still emotionally torn up at his failure to save a fellow agent and still looking into the bottom of a bottle.
The mystery of who wants to hurt Val and her romance with Grey slowly unravel into an intrigue worth reading.
And again we are introduced to the idea of the Phoenix Brotherhood that Griff is slowly gathering. Fascinating!
Definitely Recommended --m as we add another name to the charm of MEN OF MYSTERY [wouldn't it be interesting to have a charm bracelet with each man's first name on a charm?] Sterling Silver of course.
A compelling read.......2000-09-07
I've read several of Gayle Wilson's books over the past couple of years, both her Intrigues and her Harlequin Historicals, and I've yet to be disappointed. Her writing style is nearly flawless; her attention to detail unsurpassed; and while she writes some of the steamiest love scenes in the genre, the physical aspects of her characters' attraction to each other never take a back seat to the compelling emotional tension that makes for a far more satisfying read, as far as this reader is concerned.
HER PRIVATE BODYGUARD does have a far simpler plotline than many other of her Intrigues, the suspense element carrying less weight than the romance. Since I'm not a huge romantic suspense fan, anyway -- in fact, Ms. Wilson is one of the few RS authors I read -- that didn't bother me. I was far more "intrigued" by the slowly unfolding relationship between the reluctant heiress, Valerie Beaufort, and her even more reluctant bodyguard, Grey Sellers. Neither of these were "people" people, which made their learning to trust all the more interesting to watch. A different kind of book for Ms. Wilson, I think, but no less enjoyable than her more plot-heavy stories.
Absolutely riveting!.......2000-07-06
The latest installment in Wilson's Men of Mystery series certainly lives up to expectations. The central characters are both marked by their previous experiences, but emerge strong and smart as the story unfolds. This is the perfect blend of sizzling romance and nail-biting suspense that her fans have come to expect. Loved Grey! Absolutely loved him!
Dull.......2000-05-28
I concede that the author has the ability to reveal many layers of her characters many romance authors would never dream of finding. That does not amount to much if you cannot stand the characters. Fine characterization does not compensate for a story that moves slower than syrup and delivers obvious twists in the ending, particularly when the characters are as unpleasant as these. I cannot abide characters who wallow in anger and self pity. They deserved each other, I will grant them that. I nearly gave up halfway through the book. The mystery/suspense element was not being advanced and I did not want to spend one more minute watching the characters either sulking by themselves or being cold to one another. The sexual tension was high but I could not understand the appeal either character had for the other. The author does give readers an uncommon opportunity to be acquainted with every aspect of her main characters. I unfortunately found they were not they type of people I wanted to know, in real life or in fiction.
A Reader from L.A. = lower Alabama.......2000-05-20
Ordinarily I am not a fan of Intrigues, but Gayle Wilson has converted me. She has written a novel packed with sexual tension. Ms. Wilson writes with maturity and insight and brings poignancy to the story by featuring a heroine who is handicapped. More power to her! Hooray for Ms. Wilson! I highly recommend this book. It's a keeper!

Great read as usual from the author.......2007-01-10
The Acorna books are amazing. They are unregrettable and very deep. It takes you away to another time and place, and lets you see the world through a very different (make-believe) culture.
I hope Anne keeps putting out new books to amaze her audiences.
Doona.......2006-07-16
This book is great! First I have read of the Doona books, the puns that pop up through the book are hysterical. A great commentary on government!
Let it die already.......2004-07-07
While I loved the first Acorna books, and fell in love with the sweet little unicorn girl, I quickly changed my mind after this book. The plot was alright, but it seemed to me that McCaffery was rushing through this. She didn't take the time to develop the setting, plot of chars as she should have. She left the ending ambiguous, and tortured a poor creature who had already been tortured enough. Either she needs to spend a lot more time on her writing, or she needs to leave this series alone.
Acorna's World.......2003-11-07
This book is my favorite in the Unicorn girl series. I was brought to tears at some points. This is truley A.M's work at it's best! Two thumbs way up!!!!!
wish there was 0 star mark.......2002-07-21
Disgustingly silly. Seems that her books are getting more and more ridicilous. Book is full of complete nonsense, characters are [unrealistic],the whole thing is extremely childish. Of course, you'll have a holywood style happy ending. Blech.
And she should definitely go back to school to learn some physics and might want to use common sense. Aerosol torpedoes in space?

Book Description
It is difficult growing up in the shadow of heroes revered throughout the galaxy. But Khorii became a hero in her own right as she fought to save the universe from a mysterious, deadly plague that not even the healing powers of the Linyaari could stop. Now, confined with the rest of the survivors on Paloduro, it seems as if Khorii and her friends may be able to stem the tide of death and disease. However, ominous signs indicate that the epidemic is only beginning, as old enemies reemerge and a shocking family secret is revealed. With the aid of her android "brother," Khorii must foil the deadly pestilence before a covert mission to cripple the entire star system is catastrophically complete.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly written sequel.......2007-09-19
The first books in this series were mediocre, but not too bad. This last one was awful, very hard to come up to speed on because it did not start where the last one left off.
Second Wave.......2007-09-11
Like most of her work alone and with co-writers, this is another rousing tale. Takes place in the Acorna universe and is geared as usual to a young teen audience, although enjoyable as a quick read for adults. This is the nineth in the series and carries Acorna's daughter towards a meeting with her unknown twin sister. A galactic plague precludes her meeting up with Acorna and Arii, as well as the twin sister who also does not know of the connection. Only the ship's cat does and he's not talking. But all's well that ends well, if not here then in the next volume: Third Watch. McCaffrey has come a long way since the early days of the world of Pern 30 odd years ago. Her writing has been a constant ever since. As much as I enjoy her characters and plots, the one criticism I'd level, is the lack of depth. Neither the characters nor the plots have much, unlike those of C. J. Cherryh or Marion Bradley which come with great depth and complexity. Still, the subjects she chooses get decent treatment and aren't meant to be literary tracts in the first place.
A very good book.......2007-03-16
I got this book on a friday and was reading the last page by Sunday night. I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed this book as much as the rest of the Acorna Series. I can't wait for the next one.
second wave: Acorna's children.......2007-01-16
This book is similar to those others in this series by the author. They allow you to see what is being written about as if you were there. This story tells how Acorna daughters work out being picked on by the preancestors and how then they learn that they are sisters.
The Magic is Gone.......2006-11-14
It becomes clear that Anne McCaffrey is not doing the writing any more. The names are so convoluted and difficult to remember that one loses any sense of the story line of the original book that began this series. It is a shame that the dialogue no longer has Ms McCaffrey's poise and spirit. If you must continue this series, check it out from the library, do not waste any more of your money.

Fantastic!.......1999-03-09
The book Acorna is a story about 3 miners in space that raise an orphaned alien child that has a horn in her head that resembles a unicorns. This wonderful story will not let you go until it is done. Acorna is one of the best books I have read from Anne McCaffrey and Margret Ball.
Acorna: The Unicorn Girl, More than it seems.......1998-12-21
Anne Mcaffrey and Margret Ball team up to write a simply amazing, terribly absorbing novel. Acorna: The Unicorn girl is about a young alien child found by three rough-n-tough space miners, and their struggle to raise her. Kind of a 3 men and a baby set in the future, plus some added excitment. One more thing though..she does not remain a child through the entire book. But the book does not span a human girl's life time. I highly reccomend this book.

Good for the Christian Counselor.......2007-10-07
I am currently using the book for a graduate level psychology class. The authors strive to show the various worldviews, but it is based mainly on Christian views. It is a good read, but like most books in this area, you are either going to like it or loathe it.
