4 out of 5 stars Theologian Reflections over a Spiritual Journey.......2000-08-27

I find this book unusually challenging, both for the depth and breath of issues that are unequivocably addressed with limpid and even perplexing objectivity and honesty. I recommend this treatise to any individual seeking a deeper understanding of his/her spiritual journey. Not an easy reading, but ever so worthwhile!

5 out of 5 stars I didn't want it to end!.......2003-01-31

My husband has been joking with me that when I finish this series I will fall into a deep drepression.....I have never been so hooked on a series of books in all my life! Well, I finished all 5 in just 4 weeks! And I'm not depressed...I'm uplifted! I can't wait to read the next two out called The Hearts of the Children. I know I'll enjoy them just as much.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great story, great writer.......2002-10-20

I really loved this book! What a great conclusion to the series. We start where we left off, with the war over, but Alex, Wally and Bobbi still away from home. Wally is finally liberated and on his way home with his friend, Chuck, but when they arrive stateside they find it's a little harder to adjust to being home than they expected. But the one who has the hardest time making the change from army life to civilian life is Alex. As happy as he is to be home with Anna and their baby, he's jumpy and suffers from nightmares. He's also unsure what he wants from the rest of his life. Bobbi is unsure who she wants to marry!
Meanwhile, back at home, LaRue goes through some changes and Beverly discovers dating. Bea and Al have some changes to face too.

I really loved this book. I have to admit, my knowledge and understanding of WWII is not very strong. But I was really drawn into the stories of this family, and through them, the whole history of the war. I think every major aspect of the war was touched on in some way. I really rejoiced with the whole family when everyone was reunited. Even if you're not LDS, I think you would enjoy this series. But as a Mormon, it was a very enjoyable slice of history I was not that familiar with.

Really Great!!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent End to an Excellent Series.......2001-02-15

I love this book. Three months ago I was hooked on the first book and kept going until I finished them all. When you find good books such as the "Children of the Promise" series you don't want them to stop coming. So I am sad that this is the last book in the series. But this book is a fitting way to end a wonderful series of well written books.

Book Description

Marital Misery? You’re Not Alone

Contemplating divorce? (Gasp) Never! Murder? (Hmmmmm) Well, maybe…! If your marriage resembles a combat zone more than a covenant commitment, you’re in good company. If You Don’t Die to Self, I May Have to Kill You is packed with juicy foibles and misdeeds candidly expressed by Emmy-nominated TV news reporter Karen Long . Follow her behind the scenes to discover solid spiritual ammunition targeting attitude, gratitude, contentment, forgiveness, self-denial, and even suffering. Romance, suspense, and intrigue mark Karen’s antics, and “what not to dos” reinforce biblical principles that light the way from marital misery to a harmonious hitch.

Contemplating Divorce?

(Gasp)

Never!

Murder?

(Pause)

Well...maybe!

The slogan for The Divorce Store reads: “When ‘till death do you part’ isn’t soon enough.” Can you relate?

“Instead of just waiting for Paul to keel over, I spent years looking for a younger woman for him, someone who enjoys doing laundry.”

“I calculated I’d forgiven Paul the biblically required seven times seventy—490 times—over the course of one weekend alone…”

“When ‘two become one flesh,’ you either get some unity or you get Frankenstein. We got a monster of a marriage…”

When your marriage resembles a combat zone more than a covenant commitment, you need a few weapons, er…tools at your disposal.

Former award-winning TV news reporter Karen Long candidly expresses juicy foibles and misdeeds marking her treacherous memorable twenty-year marriage with Paul. The happy ending? They’re still married. Only now they’re laughing.

Karen will arm you with solid spiritual ammunition targeting attitude, gratitude, contentment, forgiveness, and—of course—suffering. Humorously revealing her hard-won wisdom, this book is your ticket out of marital misery and into a harmonious hitch.

“A book just like the author—witty, funny, charming, and full of depth. It will make you laugh and cry, but mostly you will learn about yourself and what it takes to finish the marriage journey with a smile on your face.”

Congressman James E. Rogan

Story Behind the Book

Karen Long gave up a lucrative career as a TV news reporter “broadcasting live from the mean streets of Los Angeles ” to go home to a husband, kids, and real action and drama. She tells of being on the frontlines of the home front in this evangelical exposé on the epidemic of marital misery. “Over the years,” Karen says, “my husband, Paul, pushed all my buttons, including the little red one that can blast a nuclear family of five into oblivion. Paul often brought out the very worst in me…allowing me to see my great need for a Savior instead of a good divorce attorney. Yes, this would be a terribly tragic story if it wasn’t such a terrific, true testimony for the Lord.”

3 out of 5 stars Not transformed by this book.......2007-07-27

I bought this book because of the reviews and I've found myself getting very bored with it, even falling asleep while reading it. There's an entire chapter of her life growing up and that's what put me to sleep and I couldn't figure out how that was relevant to changing my marriage. It made me not want to continue reading. Maybe I need to give it another chance, but I thought by the way the reviews were that my life would be changed through this book. But just doing what God instructs us to do will change my life. I'd recommend " A Women After God's Own Heart" 10 times more. That book is life changing.

5 out of 5 stars I Interviewed Her After I read This Amazing Book.......2007-06-06

If You Don't Die to Self I May Have to Kill You
Karen Long

Hilarious and an excellent page turner is the only way to describe this wonderful book by Karen Long. At first glance you may not think that this is a Christian woman or a Christian book about marriage, but it is. The title itself gives you a hint about what lies in the pages.

Mrs. Long writes a tell all book about her marriage and the hardships that she and husband Paul endure. When they married neither one of them were Christians and were saved about two years into the marriage. This salvation of their souls does not even start to save the marriage, that slowly starts it downward spiral as soon as the vows are said.

The wordsy author was once a television journalist. She is now a mother of three and a stay at home mom. Her husband is an editor and a workaholic, which she views as him not being a part of their marriage and children's lives. She describes in detail some of the fights and issues that they have in their home.

She then goes on to tell about how both she and her husband are changed by God, and that all the trials and problems that they endured in their marriage were for a purpose. They went to Christian counseling, churches, and learned to love and respect each other. They learned to pray together, and confess sins while praying. They learned to communicate and not to blame. There are even ten points that Mrs. Long lists at the end of the book and she talks about them in detail, not just points. They are:

1. Divorce is not an option.
2. Be brutally honest about yourself.
3. Don't deny emotions.
4. Don't be demanding.
5. Find joy in sorrow.
6. Get to know God.
7. Make your partner your friend.
8. Pray together.
9. Live with ambivalence.
10. Die to self!

I absolutely loved this book. It has humor, and still a very important message. It takes courage and strength to air your dirty laundry out there for the world. I feel that this is a wonderful tool that God can use for all of us who read it. I know that it made me feel better to know that life is life, and marriage is hard, even for seemingly "perfect" people. I will be taking the lessons that I learned and applying them to my life. I am also going to share this book with all of my friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars Praise God for Christians like Karen & Paul.......2007-02-09

It took a lot of guts to share with the world their story, proving once again, God won't let us get in any situation that He can't handle. If you are reading this review and your marriage is in trouble, then GO IMMEDIATELY to the BUY button and see for yourself:WITH GOD, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. If my ex-wife had Karen's courage and commitment, my life and my son's and his mother's, would have been so much better. Thank you Karen and Paul for showing the Christians of the world, we really don't have to be "of the world."

1 out of 5 stars Poor at best.......2006-09-26

Karen Long's book is, well, disappointing. It reads as a poorly organized self-promotion. She never fails to remind the reader that she is a "former-hard hitting journalist," or "drop" names of celebrities she has known. The self-kudos are unending.

I don't know whose fault it is but Karen should contemplate killing her editor, not her husband. The book is disjointed chronologically, and the only useful advice comes from a chapter that summerizes what her pastor taught her. I'd rather read his book.

Ultimately this book is sometimes funny but mostly poorly written, filled with self-promotion rather than practical steps for fixing a broken marriage. Most reviews read like sychophantic kiss-ups, like they know the author and can't say anything constructive.

If you have a marriage that is actually difficult find something else, you're wasting your time here.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL COUPLES!.......2006-07-21

I laughed and cried and ultimately rejoiced with this witty, honest look at how God and His promises can save ANY marriage! Fun to read, yet packed with profound, life-changing truth. I am a pastoral counselor and will recommend it to everyone I know!

4 out of 5 stars Great history lesson in a great personal story.......1999-03-15

I read this book just before my husband left for a three week overseas business trip. Jeannie's story (true, by the way) about her husband being called to WAR just a month after their wedding made me empathize- and it made me feel much better- after all, I knew my husband would return. This book also gives a good idea of what it was like "back home" during the World War.

In the glorious Scottish Highlands of Robert the Bruce, independent young widow Ailig MacLeod faces a difficult challenge: can she help an unlikely leader bring honor and prosperity back to their clan--without losing her own cautious heart?

Laurin Wittig knows Scotland-especially the Scotland of the historical 1300's. With her last release, Charming the Shrew (Berkley Sensation), she brought us the story of Tayg Munro, a warrior in King Robert the Bruce's army, and one headstrong shrew by the name of Catriona MacLeod. Working together, they managed to intercept the man who would harm their king-one of Catriona's own brothers. In the process, Catriona escaped the dominance of her five over-bearing brothers and found love and passion in Tayg's arms. Now, in DARING THE HIGHLANDER, one of those domineering MacLeod's is back-and about to meet his match in both family matters and those of the heart.

For Ailig MacLeod, returning to his beloved home of Assynt Castle is bittersweet-constantly fighting with his brothers and his father has left him weary, and this tiring trek of attempting to bring his rebellious sister, Catriona, home, has made the journey even more harrowing. Since King Robert the Bruce discovered that Ailig's eldest brother had conspired to bring about his death, he's sent this MacLeod home-with a special task that weighs heavy upon Ailig's heart.

Assynt Castle, as well, is not as he left it only a short month ago. It's fallen into disrepair, the family-and villagers-are feeling the brunt of a harsh winter, and everywhere he looks, spirits are down. Now, to complicate things even further from the task that the king has given him, that of asking his father to relinquish his role as chief of Clan Leod of Assynt, is the all-grown-up, and highly irresistible, Morainn MacRailt intercepting him at every turn.

Ms. Wittig has penned another highly emotional, soul-stirring historical novel rich in Scottish history. With factual historic details, compelling characters, and the combined stories to betrayal and new love, DARING THE HIGHLANDER is another winner.

Ailig MacLeod has just returned to his family home after finding his sister, and bears a message from the King that he knows his father will hate. How can he tell him that his beloved eldest son is dead from treason and the other two brothers were pressed into service in Robert the Bruce's army? And that's not even the worst of it... the real shocker is that Ailig has been ordered by the King to take over as clan chief, effective immediately.

Morainn MacRailt is a young widow who is content in her life on the edge of the village. She has sworn she will never marry again, but will remain free to live as she pleases. When Ailig returns, she feels for his plight but believes he will succeed. Her support means much to Ailig, even though she resists the attraction between them, remaining true to her vow to stay independent.

The situation has yet to grow even more tense, however. A rival clan wants more power, Ailig's father refuses to step down as Clan Chief until Ailig proves himself, and the doubts of the clan threaten all they hold dear. Will Ailig and Morainn's bond be enough to bring peace to their clan? And what of her vow to never love or marry again?

Laurin Wittig shows once again with Daring the Highlander that she is a powerful force in the Scottish historical genre. Her descriptive imagery will transport readers to the Highlands and the turbulent times when Robert the Bruce tries to unite all of Scotland. Readers will feel the wind on their faces, as they see and smell the winter snow along with the characters.

Ailig is a young man thrust into a position he never dreamed of having. His doubts are real, as are his internal strength and sharp mind. He knows his position is tentative and that many in his clan are hoping for his failure, but he never lets that sway him. He still goes his way and holds on to his desire to make things right, knowing that is the only way to earn respect. Morainn is a kind and generous woman who wants her independence, just not at the cost of others. When Ailig needs her help, she never gives it a second thought and just comes to his aid, knowing he deserves to be chief. Though she values her independence above all else, she surprisingly finds herself succumbing to his desire.

When Ailig and Morainn finally come together, their mutual respect, love and passion leap from the pages straight into the reader's heart. The blend of characters in this book gives a wonderfully developed story that will engross one from beginning to end. Everyone has their role to play, from Skaeth the mercenary and Neill the chief of Clan Leod to Duff MacDonell of the rival clan and Giorsal the healer. Without every character, the tale would fall flat, not being as beautiful as it is.

One can never go wrong with a book by Ms. Wittig and this reviewer eagerly awaits the next story.

              5 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE!.......2005-06-15

In this memorable tapestry of politics, greed, treachery, and everlasting love, Laurin Wittig has created a book to place on your keeper shelf. The tale of Morainn and Ailig is intertwined with passion and rich historical flavor. Ms. Wittig has an obvious love for her highland tales, and it shows. For readers of historical romance who love a mix of adventure and unforgettable characters, I recommend Daring the Highlander or any of Ms. Wittig's books.

5 out of 5 stars No arrogant knights with wilting virgins! :).......2005-06-12

What a refreshing romance! It's set against a lush backdrop of characters and politics in highland Scotland. A great balance between the central characters and the active environment of the time. I loved rooting for the underdog! Instead of the usual mysterious, arrogant, overconfident hero, this one is so much more human, with human doubts and worries, yet he shows such honor without any of the usual bragging. The herione is also different in refreshing ways. How wonderful to read about someone who is experienced, has known happiness, not cruelty, yet like the hero, is not arrogant or bossy. She takes on new challenges with the usual human worries, and rediscovers herself as a worthy person. If you are looking for a historical read that offers something different in the plot and in the characters, try this fabulous book! It is the first time I have read anything by this author, and I have already ordered her previous book, Taming of the Shrew.

                    Book Description

Harold Hoehner has taught biblical exegesis to thousands of students over the years. He now brings that experience to bear on this important work. He begins with a helpful introduction to the letter of Ephesians in which he addresses issues of authorship, structure and genre, historical setting, purpose, and theology. At the end of the introduction, the author includes a detailed bibliography for further reading. Hoehner then delves into the text of Ephesians verse by verse, offering the Greek text, English translation, and detailed commentary. He interacts extensively with the latest scholarship and provides a fair and thorough discussion of every disputed point in the book. Pastors, students, and scholars looking for a comprehensive treatment on Ephesians will be interested in this commentary. Hoehner's interaction with the latest scholarship combined with his detailed exegesis will make this new commentary the only resource they will need to consult.

                    5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-01-26

As a seminary student, I really enjoy this book. If you want to know more about Ephesian, take this one. Another commentary of Ephesian I strongly recommend is the one who wrote by Peter O'Brien. I compare both books, if I need to pick one, I will pick this one instead of Peter's one. This one is much more critical than Peter's. Anyway, I prefer to own both books if you have time to read them all.

5 out of 5 stars A complete, detailed, scholarly commentaty on Ephesians- Outstanding!.......2006-05-14

This is the only book that has so thoroughly exceeded my expectations and publishing hype that it deserves a greater-than-5 star-rating.

Dr. Harold Hoehner received his PhD from Cambridge University, and taught NT Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary for over 30 years.

Dr. Hoehner begins with a detailed introduction (131 pages) treating the authorship, history, purpose and theology. He then gives a comprehensive bibliography of authorship that provides sources for both conservative and liberal thought. This discussion of both conservative and liberal theologies continues throughout the work.

The book is set up to deal with each verse, and sometime phrase, individually, and in detail. The phrase 'no stone unturned' comes to mind. Each verse is given in NA27 or UBS4 (vast majority NA27) and then translated. His reliance on Scripture is wide-ranging and not restricted to a single translation. An understanding of Greek is needed to fully benefit from this writing, as the Greek is not rendered in cognates. Throughout the book are eight 'Excurses' dealing more topically, yet more in depth with specific issues in Ephesians such as: the textual issues of Eph 1:1, 'In Christ,' Election, and rules of Christian households. These deal with the full theological context of Scripture rather than dealing solely with Ephesians, and help to give more understanding for some of the more important ideas in this book. Two indices round out the book: an author index and a Scripture index.

Dr. Hoehner reaches into all of Scripture to discuss Ephesians in depth. His conclusions reflect conservative, evangelical teaching, with solid, thorough evidence and theological scholarship. Another aspect of his writing is inclusion of theology discussed by the early church fathers such as Ignatius and Clement, although he only uses instances where these authors support Scripture.

This commentary should reside on the shelves of all theologians, exegetical pastors and seminary students. This book is not directed towards lay-persons, unless a full understanding of Greek is present. Dr. Hoehner writing is supremely valuable, enveloping modern scholarship, full disclosure of major theological arguments and solid, conservative evangelicalism. I wish all the commentaries on my shelf were this well written and researched.

                    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding - 2nd Best on Ephesians.......2006-05-13

This is an outstanding commentary on Ephesians, and ranks as 2nd best in my judgment. Hoehner's real contributions are his clarity and his thoroughness. His handling of the Greek text is thorough, and his weighing of different interpretive options is usually pretty even-handed and fair (though occasionally I think he falls down on the wrong side of an issue or is overly dogmatic). His organization is exceptional, as he breaks everything down into easy to follow, logical outlines. For a critical commentary, this is amazingly helpful homiletically! His writing style is lucid and clear (I love how he regularly summarizes his arguments and position in the final paragraph on a pericope). His theological stance is Evangelical and conservative, although sometimes a bit one-dimensional (especially when he pigeon-holes a passage into his theological system - dispensationalism. But this doesn't interfere with the quality of the commentary very often). Hoehner also probably gives the most robust defense of Pauline authorship of Ephesians of any commentary (over 100 pages!). This is a lengthy commentary on Ephesians (over 900 pages), but well worth the purchase. As I've preached through Ephesians over the past two years, I've benefited from Hoehner in many ways, and have read almost all of the book. I would easily recommend him as one of the top three commentators on the book, though I'd slightly prefer Peter O'Brien, who writes with more depth with a keen eye for biblical theology. Really, the two commentaries complement one another and should be read together. All in all, this commentary is outstanding! Anyone preaching through Ephesians expositionally will definitely want to purchase it.

                    5 out of 5 stars ephesiastic.......2006-04-20

A very strong and solid exegetical treatment of Ephesians. Mostly based upon my own theological presuppositions verses Hoehner's, I cannot agree with all of his hermeneutical movements from text to theology (e.g., I do not agree with his overall ecclesiology - especially in his readings of Ephesians 1). It is most beneficial to read this along with W. Klein's "The New Chosen People" for a more rounded approach to understanding election as a corporate concept. That is to say that one may or may not take election to mean predestination (decide for yourself), but Paul does not seem to be addressing that issue in the context of a community letter written to discuss community identity and practice.

Technically challenging on many linguistic-textual aspects, yet a good research commentary. Each section is very well outlined and presented with a clear translation by the author (most of which are quite agreeable, some wording and phrasing perhaps questionable), and bears the marks of a scholar at the top of his game. This is a commentary many years in the making and shows a command of Paul's letter and overall theology. Background and historical issues are presented appropriately and coherently as well.

As a "top tier" work, this is a must-have for those interested in Ephesians.

                    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-04-14

Hoehner has succeeded admirably in crafting a commentary that (for someone who understands Greek) reads as smoothly as a survey. The progression of his thought is logical, clear, and based thoroughly on the text. Having read it described elsewhere as "ponderous", I was a bit apprehensive. Yet, it is far more usable than other commentaries on the Greek text half its size. Think of it as an aircraft carrier that can turn on a dime.

I recently used this along with great exegetical works of the past from the likes of Hodge, Robinson, Westcott, Eadie, etc. Hoehner holds the field against all comers, having all the exegetical depth one could need, and still providing an ejoyable read. A model commentary.

Note: Despite another reviewer's comments to the contrary, throughout the work Hoehner clearly holds to a belief in a God who is sovereign in election.

4 out of 5 stars defects on paperback edition.......2005-10-09

I'm not reviewing the contents of this book, only the physical condition. There are blank spots on pages 24 and 29 of the paperback edition. There is also a slight ink stain on page 398. I checked another copy of this same book (ICC Ephesians paperback) and found those defects on the same exact pages. I suspect that the masterfilm was defected. The hardcover edition that I loaned from a library did not have those defects (It was a beautiful book to hold and read). I also have bought other ICC paperbacks (all three vols of Matt. and also the Pastoral Epistles) and I don't find any defects in those volumes. On the whole, I think the quality of the paperback editions of ICC Ephesians is sadly way too far below the quality of the writer of this otherwise excellent commentary (I'd gladly rate this book 5 stars, but for the reasons stated above). You should check your copy.
