Considering some of his past subjects--slackers, dot-commers, Hollywood producers--a Columbine-like high school massacre seems like unusual territory for the usually glib Douglas Coupland. Anyone who has read Generation X or Miss Wyoming knows that dryly hip humor, not tragedy, is the Vancouver author's strong suit. But give Coupland credit for twisting his material in strange, unexpected shapes. Coupland begins his seventh novel by transposing the Columbine incident to North Vancouver circa 1988. Narrated by one of the murdered victims, the first part of Hey Nostradamus! is affecting and emotional enough to almost make you forget you're reading a book by the same writer who so accurately characterized a generation in his first book, yet was unable to delineate a convincing character. As Cheryl Anway tells her story, the facts of the Delbrook Senior Secondary student's life--particularly her secret marriage to classmate Jason--provide a very human dimension to the bloody denouement that will change hundreds of lives forever. Rather than moving on to explore the conditions that led to the killings, though, Coupland shifts focus to nearly a dozen years after the event: first to Jason, still shattered by the death of his teenage bride, then to Jason's new girlfriend Heather, and finally to Reg, Jason's narrow-minded, religious father.

Hey Nostradamus! is a very odd book. It's among Coupland's most serious efforts, yet his intent is not entirely clear. Certainly there is no attempt at psychological insight into the killers' motives, and the most developed relationships--those between Jason and Cheryl, and Jason and Reg--seem to have little to do with each other. Nevertheless, it is a Douglas Coupland book, which means imaginatively strange plot developments--as when a psychic, claiming messages from the beyond, tries to extort money from Heather--that compel the reader to see the story to its end. And clever turns of phrase, as usual, are never in short supply, but in Cheryl's section the fate we (and she) know awaits her gives them an added weight: "Math class was x's and y's and I felt trapped inside a repeating dream, staring at these two evil little letters who tormented me with their constant need to balance and be equal with each other," says the deceased narrator. "They should just get married and form a new letter together and put an end to all the nonsense. And then they should have kids." --Shawn Conner, Amazon.ca

Book Description

Pregnant and secretly married, Cheryl Anway scribbles what becomes her last will and testament on a school binder shortly before a rampaging trio of misfit classmates gun her down in a high school cafeteria. Overrun with paranoia, teenage angst, and religious zeal in the massacre's wake, this sleepy suburban neighborhood declares its saints, brands its demons, and moves on. But for a handful of people still reeling from that horrific day, life remains permanently derailed. Four dramatically different characters tell their stories: Cheryl, who calmly narrates her own death; Jason, the boy no one knew was her husband, still marooned ten years later by his loss; Heather, the woman trying to love the shattered Jason; and Jason's father, Reg, whose rigid religiosity has separated him from nearly everyone he loves. Hey Nostradamus! is an unforgettable portrait of people wrestling with spirituality and with sorrow and its acceptance.

4 out of 5 stars Above Average.......2007-04-22

I can't decide how I feel about this book. It kept me reading, and it was interesting. It was technically well-written. After I finished, I was still thinking about the book and the characters for a few days. Still, I can't help but feel there was something missing. Like the characters needed more development, or the story needed to add up to more.

A quick summary: this book is a story about a school shooting in a Vancouver suburb and how it affects people. The story is broken into four sections. The first part is told by Cheryl, a student at the school, and it's set on the day of the shooting. The second section is narrated by Jason, who was a student at the school, and is still suffering over ten years later. The third part is by Heather, Jason's girlfriend, and the fourth is by Reg, his dad.

The first half of the book is interesting. The second half sometimes seems superfluous. It's still interesting, but Heather's part of the book has nothing to do with the shooting, and it seems like a digression.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I've ever read.......2007-02-10

I read this for a book club. The reviews here and the jacket blurb intrigued me. The jacket blurb was the best writing I found between these covers.

The characters are two-dimensional and interchangable. Their prose and dialogue is the same no matter who's speaking. No one was developed well enough for me to care what happened to them and each narrator was more sanctimonius and vapid than the last.

The dialogue is incredibly bad. No one talks like this, especially not the teenagers in part one (narrated by Cheryl).

Each character preached at me and, given their choices in their cardboard lives, I didn't appreciate it. I expected it from Reg but from Jason? And from Cheryl? I read her section eagerly, looking forward to watching her die, terrible as that sounds.

What would have helped this story was focus on... anything, really. There are scenes and plotlines that begin and go nowhere. The key to this book could have been the fathers/sons: Reg, Jason, Kent, the twins and Cheryl's unborn child. In his section, Reg says that Jason can never know his pain, having never been a father. That's all the attention the subject is given and all we can do is bristle and read the few remaining pages. Meanwhile readers know this isn't the case. But we don't get a great enough sense of this being the key to Jason's life, we don't care and subsequently what could have been an interesting aspect of the story from a literary standpoint is wasted.

On the good side, it's a quick read b/c there's little to think about and nothing to challenge the reader.

There's a reason this book is out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Very Strong Stuff.......2007-01-07

Fiction allows a reader to experience dreadful events. Yet there is a vast gulf between driving by and witnessing the gory aftermath of an accident and being handed an understanding of how truly tragic the accident becomes in the lives of those involved. Coupland succeeds in his tale of a Columbine-style massacre by comparing and contrasting the effects of the events on characters drawn well enough that the reader cares what happens. Unlike many authors, he is not wielding emotional and physical violence without thought--yet be prepared for the violence nonetheless.

Columbine was all about emotional turmoil on a staggering number of levels. Coupland does a stunning job of laying out the ethical and moral landmines inherent in any thoughtful analysis of tragedy. Naturally, any analysis of tragedy ultimately becomes an analysis of religious faith (or the lack thereof) and the limits and power of forgiveness and redemption. Sadly, nothing can be quite so devastating as the misuse of religion to cover one's own deficiencies, to excuse faults or to supposedly gain power over others who may lack the self-control to follow their own path or in some other fashion be susceptible to the misuse of religious belief. Not only is the misuse of belief treated; Coupland offers several thematic threads (though seemingly odd in the case of the psychic) that show the power of faith and belief. Furthermore, there are several characters who do terrible things and then seek forgiveness. This exploration of the limits of redemption and forgiveness will stay with the reader for a very long time.

Very, very deep stuff but not for the immature or unprepared. Coupland invites us to examine our own motives and provides a reminder of how utterly inadequate we are to judge the actions of others. Finally, though we are incapable of adequate judgment--Coupland reminds that we have the duty and obligation to protect ourselves and others from the hurtful effects of the misuse of freedom by others. In other words, a well-aimed rock can prevent much suffering.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for characters, 3 stars for plot.......2006-10-27

Coupland does a great job of fleshing out characters, but leaves the plot sadly in the lurch. I wouldn't ask that everything be resolved happily, Hollywood-style, but just that the major plot questions somehow be answered. It seems like a cop-out to end the book the way he does.

1 out of 5 stars I DID NOT LIKE IT.......2006-03-09

THis book kinda sucked. It went on and on and on and on and didn't really have much of a point except to say that mass killing of teenagers ruins a lot of lives which isn't exactly a big epiphany though. I found Cheryl to be a big phony, Jason was depressed yet extremely self-centred, and Heather was just a very insecure person who needed intensive therapy to help her see that she deserved to be treated well and shouldn't stay with people who can't possibly meet her needs.

THis was just a book about a bunch of messed up people who continue to mess up their lives and then mess up the lives of everyone around them.

It had tragic overtones, obviously, just mostly I thought it was just pathetic.

I did NOT like it! Coupland could write better than this!!!

There's something Slightly Shady about Lavinia Lake. First of all, no decent woman would go into trade, even when an unscrupulous employer leaves her stranded abroad with her young niece. But the capable Lavinia has landed on her feet, peddling dubious reproductions of ancient artifacts in Rome to earn passage home. When a madman ransacks her shop, accusing her of aiding and abetting a murderous gang of thieves, Lavinia and her niece Emeline return to London, where Lavinia once more takes lemons and makes lemonade, becoming a private investigator. In the course of her first discreet inquiry for a wealthy aristocrat with secrets to hide, Lavinia runs into her madman once more, standing over the recently deceased body of a blackmailer. Not exactly your usual beginning for a relationship, but Mr. Tobias March is hardly an ordinary man. In fact, he's quite extraordinary, Lavinia very reluctantly admits to herself. When threats to Lavinia's safety force her into an unlikely partnership with the mysterious Mr. March, the fur--and a petticoat or two--flies. A heady combination of passion and the shared thrill of the hunt for a depraved murderer may lead Lavinia and Tobias to form a partnership of a more permanent kind. Lively suspense with a healthy dose of passion, Amanda Quick's Slightly Shady is truly addictive storytelling. --Alison Trinkle

Book Description

Amanda Quick's bestselling trademark is a combination of suspense and passion in historical tales alight with sparkling wit and brimming with dangerous intrigue. Now she serves up the most tantalizing novel of her career as an enterprising woman allies herself with a mysterious spy, only to be caught in a seething brew of treachery — and temptation....

From the moment he burst into her antiquities shop in Rome, Lavinia Lake knew the stranger was nothing but trouble. He said he was in pursuit of a killer. He swore he was only trying to save her. Yet no matter what he claimed, Lavinia was convinced that Mr. Tobias March was bent instead on destroying her. And when the self-described spy hustled her and her niece out of the shop and back to England, Lavinia could only hope that one day she would would find a way to repay Mr. March in full.

But Lavinia never imagined the shocking circumstances under which they would meet again ... or that soon he would become more deadly — and more compelling — with each passing day.

In the business of making private inquiries, Tobias March had been hired to trade down a powerful villain who even now was intent on assuming control of a vast criminal organization. Yet in his search he had found nothing but one dead end — and one dead body — after another.

And then, just as his investigation was heating up once more, he found his mission and his life complicated by the most ungovernable, unpredictable, exasperating woman he had ever met.

Faced with a tangled web of deceit and danger, Tobias had no choice but to form a partnership with Lavinia, a lady whose past could only be described as slightly shady. Yet when he persuaded her to become his associate, neither Tobias nor Lavinia realized that their heated disputes would spark a sizzling desire — or that the deeper they kept digging for the truth, the deeper they were digging their own graves....

1 out of 5 stars Drop it like a hot potato!.......2006-10-17

Amanda what happened???? I can only conclude that it must have been her evil twin that wrote this book. Its horrible! Please, please PLEASE! don't read this book if you've never read a Quick historical before because you'll never read any of her books again. The hero and heroine are both not likeable and the romance stinks big time! The 'love' scenes are horrible! To quote one of my favorite romances " there's not enough heat between these two to light a candle". I can't believe there's a sequel!

Do yourself a favor and read instead Quick's:
Mystique
Desire
Mistress
Ravished

These are great books and show what Quick is really capable of.

4 out of 5 stars Slightly Shady.......2004-06-01

I have been an avid fan of Amanda Quick every since I picked up my first historical romance and it was her Ravished. She hooked me with that book. I had never read one before and though they were all silly books. Harriet and Gideon are such great characters. Reading Ravished made me want to go out in search of anything else she had written. After scouring used book shops, books stores, etc. I have most of them and still reread them on a regular basis. When I need a really good read I pull out an Amanda Quick. Unfortunately, all of her books since Slightly Shady cannot compare to those older books - Surrender, Desire, Seduction, etc.... I hope she can find in her writing more characters with that fire, humour, etc... that make you want to keep on reading, keep you cheering for the heroine or hero. If you want a really good book - pick up anything Amanda Quick before Slightly Shady. You won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly Shady.......2004-04-23

It started so well. It was funny. The characters were likeable. Tobias and Lavinia are displaying some attraction for one another. Then . . . there's the painfully predictable "carriage" scene. The murder plot became so convoluted in its solution, I feared I'd be confessing next. By the time the second short, choppy, terribly unromantic love scene rolled around, I'd literally forgotten I was reading a romance. Tobias, likeable fellow, came off as a rather inept detective. I'm glad I checked this out of the library instead of buying it.

3 out of 5 stars average.......2004-01-30

This is my first Amanda Quick book, I've heard so much about her, and read her reviews on my favorite books that I tried one of her books. For me, Slightly Shady is the kind of book that u can read when there's nothing more available. It's not boring nor it is hooking. This is one of those books that u can put down after reading a paragraph or so. It is not laugh out loud funny but u can see the author's attempt on comedy. The mystery is a little predictable. The twist on the ending is not original. All in all, I'm not totally disappointed. From reading her other reviews in her other novels, I know this is not her best, so I'm giving her another chance.

3 out of 5 stars A interesting book.......2003-08-12

This book was good although I got sort of tired of the book after a while you have to finish it. It is a classic Amanda Quick book. And I am planning to read the other books that go along with it. It very much indeed is light reading. Yet each character has there own spark, the main girl just kinda got annyoing though.

This is the fifth book in the Callahan's Crosstime Saloon series, a short read that once again brings together the Callahan regulars in a plot that combines the usual group therapy, the best/worst puns ever to see print and epic, world-saving deeds. This time around the gang must save Earth from a decidedly nasty alien, and only group telepathy will do the trick. Spider Robinson, whose cutting wit and keen insights are in full force, takes the opportunity to dive deep into the psyche of his various mainstay characters, making for some darkly intimate reading.

          Book Description

For years, Callahan's was the place where friends met to have a few drinks, tell a few jokes, and occasionally save the world. Until that unfortunate incident with the nuke a few years ago......But Jake Stonebender and his wife have opened a new Callahan's, Mary's Place, and all the regulars are there: Doc Webster, Fast Eddie the piano player, Long Drink McGonnigle, and of course the usual talking dogs, alcoholic vampires, aliens, and time travelers. Songs will be sung, drinks will be drunk (and drunks will have drinks), puns will be swapped....and as a three-eyed, three-legged, three-armed, threeeverythinged alien flashes through space toward the bar, it just might be time to save the world again......

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars On a stoned bender.......2005-05-03

I adore puns. Always have. Therefore, Callahan's has been a favorite place to visit. No bar to admission; the only common denominator here is that each regular has one apparent difference from humanity. These diferences all seem to mark each one as essentially the same.
All the gang is here: Jake. Ralph von Wau Wau. Mickey and Mary. Long- Drink, Eddie and Doc Webster. And, of course, Mike Callahan. Once again new people are drawn into the bar. Once more the good folk of Mary's Place have to save the world. Throughout, in their home behind the business, Jake's fiancee Zoey is expecting their first child.
This entry seemed to deal more directly with death than the books before. We hear how Eddie, Doc and Long-Drink came around.
The connection between the latter pair may explain the long-standing friendly competition.
Some of the wordplay had me laughing out loud. The chapter headings, too, were neat. The greatest pun, however, may be Zoey herself. The word zoe is Greek for Life.
"Bravery can consist of just listening to someone scream, and not willing them to die- which can be terribly hard to do."

          4 out of 5 stars Welcome to Mary's Place.......2004-06-29

Spider Robinson is probably best known for his Callahan's stories. Some readers stopped reading after the bar was destroyed in a nuclear explosion. But the latest book, CALLAHAN'S LEGACY, is a good reason to give the later series a better look.

This latest volume takes place in Mary's Place, Jake's new bar. Most of the usual characters are present as well as a few new ones who happened through the front door. Jake's wife is nine and a half months pregnant when the story opens. The story progresses through some of the usual tales and word games we have come to expect. Then Mary and Mickey Finn suddenly appear unconscious on the floor. Once revived it becomes clear that a terrible threat is heading towards Earth. Finn's counterpart is coming. Jake and the gang must find a way to save the Earth. During that course we learn how some of the older members first found Callahan's Place and we gain some new insights into the author.

I will not give away the ending but I will say that I found it to be one of the better books in the extended series (that includes the Sally books). While an entertaining and light-seeming read, there is plenty to stimulate the brain. Word games (and puns) are found throughout the book along with some other mental exercise equipment. If it has been a while since you last visited with the Callahan's gang you should pick up this book and drop in again, I am sure they would like to see you.

          5 out of 5 stars Fun at Mary's Place........2004-04-14

Of course, "Mary's Place" is really just a euphemism for "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon", even if the proprietor IS Jake Stonebender instead of the great one. But if Doc Webster, Eddie Costigan, Mickey Finn and company hang out there, it's really Callahan's, and as such, fans of the "Callahan's" series will not want to miss this one.

This is particularly true because in this book, we finally get the "origin stories" for Long Drink McGonnigle, Doc Webster, and Fast Eddie, and they are superb, some of the most powerful writing that Robinson has ever done, which is why I rate this book five stars IN SPITE of the fact that the main plot is kind of weak (Alien cyborg coming to destroy the earth? Gotta defeat it with one hand tied behind our collective, poor weak human backs? Been there. Done that) AND in spite of the fact that the beginning and ending subplot strikes me as involving rather more mockery of individuals based on physical appearance and speaking an unfamiliar language that "sounds funny" than I'd expect from Robinson and the Callahan's folks. The flashback origin stories are just THAT GOOD. You do NOT want to miss them.

5 out of 5 stars Warm, moving, laugh-out-loud funny, and a joy to read........1999-11-05

Spider Robinson's Callahan's regulars once again save the world from certain destruction. No other author combines puns, palindromes, poetry and prose like Robinson. This book has it all -- sex, music, philosophy, outrageous humor, wonderful characters, and a message. Impossible to read it without having fun -- if you like words, you'll love this book.

          1 out of 5 stars I Struggled, I Really Did . . ........1999-07-21

. . . but I couldn't make it past chapter three. I loved the first three Callahan's books, but this one seemed self-indulgent and flabby. I felt like every sentence of the first three chapters had at least two self-congratulatory puns, which inevitably forced Robinson to digress from anything resembling plot or character.

Reading this book (or the first three chapters) was like being trapped in the bar at a science fiction convention, listening to a bunch of people try to achieve alpha-male status by demonstrating their skill with puns, interrupted by the occasional filk-song.

            Book Description

It's more than twenty years since Spider Robinson revealed the existence of Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, and the original bar is gone. Mike Callahan is gone, too, but his spirit lives on in the new bar, named Mary's Place for his daughter. On this particular day, nothing seems to be going right for Jake Stonebender, proprietor of Mary's Place. First a huge storm rips the roof off the bar—and moments later, drops another, better roof on it. Then, Mary Callahan and her husband show up, unconscious, literally out of nowhere, and they bring bad news to the barfolk: a nasty three-eyed, three-toed, three-everythinged purple monster is going to descend upon them within mere hours. Through laughter and tears, with puns powerful enough to melt Formica, the most famous bar in all spacetime is going to rock this night. But will the Earth survive?
