3 out of 5 stars lots of sexual tension.......2001-08-26

I read a review about this book and author in Christianity Today, and the review stated that this author takes Christian fiction to a new level because she does not make the Christian characters perfect and the non-Christian characters evil, as is often the case in Christian fiction. I found the book to be very interesting, but I did not appreciate the level of sexual tension that went on throughout the book. While the author did not go into detail about the sex lives of her characters, throughout the book she kept letting you know that Randy and Dave were having sex, and Tony wanted to with Lena, and then Dave did with Lena even though he was living with Randy, and that Sarah and Jacob weren't having much lately. I thought all of that was a bit much for being considered "Christian" fiction. While she seemed to describe a genuine conversion in Randy, I felt she was almost mocking the "conversion" of Mamie when she prayed the sinner's prayer while wondering if the neighbor's dog was pooping in her yard again. While I'm sure that kind of thing happens, I felt she was poking more fun at the attempt to lead someone to the Lord than to Mamie for being so distracted during such a serious moment. These things caused me some disappointment with a book that received such high reviews here.

3 out of 5 stars A Leisurely Read.......2001-08-03

I read the author's second novel, Velma Still Cooks in Leeway, first and enjoyed it more than this one. The character development was a strong point, though I wished things would have moved along a bit faster. But maybe that's just how things go in a slow-paced, small town. Realistic portrayal of saints and sinners but I felt very much on the outside and didn't really care very much about them. A good writer though and her second novel shows the kind of things I missed in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Renewed in the springs!.......2000-02-18

Wright's characters capture you as eagerly turn each and every page, anxiously fretting along with them as they journey to find the graces that will quench their spiritual thirsts. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. The juxtaposition of Bender Springs' past with its present was flawlessly written! Though not an epic, the finely-detailed characters and the author's attention to detail are reminiscient of Leon Uris'Trinity. The human weaknesses of the characters remind me of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and Wright makes no apologies for the humanity of her characters. This book should be made into a movie, but one wonders what the film industry would do to its essence of life.

5 out of 5 stars Something Grand and Sacred.......2000-02-11

This book begins as a haunting portrayal of desperation, but then moves---a surprising lift---into something grand and sacred and, by the end of the book, fully whole.

Wright's book is a shining path through daily life---its intricacies, its secret dreams, and its momentous recoveries. BRAVO.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Fiction I Read in 1999!.......1999-12-07

Just when I was beginning to be bored with all the new fiction coming down the pike, I picked up a copy of "Grace at Bender Springs." What a wonderful surprise this book was! "Grace" takes an intimate look at the lives and spiritual struggles of the residents of a small town in a way that is refreshing, authentic and hopeful, avoiding platitudes and sentimentality. The characters of this small town are earthy and believable -the kind that you might have known in your own community growing up. Perhaps the most compelling part of "Grace" is the care and respect the author shows for each of her characters - some, which on the surface, seem like easy targets for stereotyping, like the Pentecostal minister Reverend Miracle. Instead, Hampton Wright manages to cajole the reader into accepting and acknowledging the value of each person in her kaleidoscope line-up - from Randy, the teenager living with an older man and looking for meaning in her life, to Tony, a suicidal teen who is tempted to give up his life to the darkness he feels closing in, to Dave, a middle-aged, agnostic widower whose life is going nowhere. Hampton Wright's style may remind readers of Clyde Edgerton's "Walking Across Egypt," especially in the wonderful way she portrays elderly women. Characters in the book such as Mamie, an elderly widow mired in routine, and her group of card-playing friends, feel completely authentic to the reader. Like Edgerton, Hampton Wright mixes unexpected humor, small-town situations and bedrock spirituality in a way that is fresh and appealing. A stunning scene at the close of the book leaves readers with a sense of hope that the grace that touched so many in Bender Springs might also be available for them.

5 out of 5 stars BASEBALL, BARS, AND A BATTLE!.......2006-10-08

Kendra finally has her life together and is just about to become full owner of "Marlowe's Place" - an ex-bar turned cyber cafe until Deuce Marlowe, ex-baseball player returns home after losing his pro contract to take over his father's business. Deuce and Kendra had a one-time fling before he left for the major leagues. He never called and she never told him a devastating secret. Is he back to ruin her life or can they start again with the secret between them?

    5 out of 5 stars A true romance.......2006-04-07

Roxanne St. Claire had me at hello with this book. Deuce and Kendra are meant to be and from chapter one, the tension sizzles between these two lovers with a past. This book screams for more, more in the series, more for these people, as you sympathize for the characters, feel their plight and want heaven and earth to shift in order for them to find each other again. The writing is crisp, natural and very sensual. If you don't fall in love with Seamus "Deuce" Monroe, well, then there's no hope for you. ::BG:: A pleasurable, quick, fulfilling read all around (that I would have finished in one day if not for the day job!)

5 out of 5 stars An emotional, satisfying read.......2006-02-13

I'll admit I'm a huge fan of Roxanne St.Claire's Silhouette Desire novels. But baseball? Not so much. In fact, most books with "jock" heroes, I usually put down. But, since I enjoyed this author's other works I thought I'd give this book a try. I'm glad I did.

Kendra Locke is ready to complete her dream of turning monroe's, a local sports bar, into an internet cafe, and she has the help of Deuce Monroe, former pro ball player's father. Then Deuce comes back to town and wants the bar for himself. With a past thick with emotional entanglements, Kendra fights against her attraction to Deuce. He hurt her before; she's certain he'll do it again. Deuce has come home for good, and he just wants Kendra to believe it.

In spite of the baseball in the story, I found myself drawn into the characters' lives. Their very real attraction kept the sexual tension simmering between the characters, and I found the story to read very real, like two adults trying to work things out.

A very good book, and I enjoyed reading it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous new book by Roxanne St. Claire.......2006-01-21

Deuce Monroe is back in his hometown after losing his major league baseball career to a foolish stunt involving a racecar crash, the latest of many stunts he's pulled in his lifetime. He figures he'll slip in and help out at his father's bar until the day he takes over when his father retires, but he didn't figure on Kendra Locke, his best friend's little sister had already beat him to it.

Upon his arrival, he discovers Kendra has turned the bar into a cyber café and coffee shop instead. The foolish stunt he pulled with her was never calling her after their one amazing night together ten years before.

Kendra has been in love with Deuce Monroe all her life. The one night they spent together had been incredible and yet changed her life unexpectedly and immeasurably. That he'd never called her afterwards was a blow she still hadn't recovered from all these years later. Now she has a new plan for her life and once again Deuce threatens to destroy her dreams.

Now I'm not one to shed a tear when I read books, but this book really touched me. Heartwarming and wonderful, Roxanne St. Claire's The Sins of His Past would make anyone believe in the power of love.

I've been carrying this book around for a week chomping at the bit to read it because I wanted to immerse myself in it and not read it in bits and snippets of available time. I'm so glad I did because this is a book to relish slowly without interruption. Do yourself a favor and immerse yourself in this amazing book today.

Roxanne St. Claire is an incredible writer and I highly recommend this book. It's going directly on to my keeper shelf with all her other wonderful books.
    Seriously, don't miss this one!!

5 out of 5 stars Dynamite!!! Sassy, Sexy and Passionate.......2006-01-15

Once I began this wonderful story, I just couldn't put it down. What is it about Roxanne St. Claire's style that pulls the reader in? I think it's her passion for story telling and the amount of time she takes to develop her characters.

This book immediately stole my interest......an old crush, the incredible hunky bad boy returns to town and let the "games" begin.

Kendra, is incredibly sensitive to others, has a secret from her past she doesn't want Deuce to find out about but still can't resist his badboy charms.

Deuce, well he's every woman's dream and learns several lessons real quick. This passionate and steamy story will just plain steel your heart.

    From the Back Cover:

For one incredible night, Kendra Locke gave Deuce Monroe everything she had. Then he walked away without a backward glance to chase his big-league dreams as far as they would take him. Years later, after one daredevil stunt too many, Deuce was back in his hometown, ready to pick up where he left off.

Kendra had no intention of letting him. The consequences of that one night had shattered her dreams. Now what Deuce wanted threatened her future...especially when he tempted her with the sensual promise of more time in his bed. Could she be the one to walk away?

2 out of 5 stars not very well developed.......2004-06-18

Star Risk, the first book in this series introduced a handful of characters that seemed to provide a good foundation for an entertaining space series.

Unfortunately Scoundrel Worlds departed from what made the first Star Risk book interesting and glossed over much of the development in the plot. Good story lines, just not well executed.

I was left with many why's in this book and it didn't seem to flow. The main characters seem to blend together and the story ended in a whimper.

I hope Bunch goes back to the drawing board and reworks the plots to develop the characters and flesh out the battle scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Action action and more action.......2003-08-06

Trimalchio IV is the home base of Star Risk, Ltd., a mercenary outfit headed by Friedrich Von Baldur that takes on unusual cases and political hot potatoes. Von Baldur went AWOL from the military arm of the Alliance to escape his court martial. Other members of the group include Jasmine King (an operative who might be a robot), Grok (a Chewbacca looking alien), and Riss (who quit the Allied Service after squaring off with her lecherous commanding officer).

The former premier of the Planet Dampier hires the team to free an intelligence officer accused of selling state secrets to the Torguth homeworld. Both Dampier and Torguth claim the Belfort worlds even though the former currently controls them. The ex-premier believes that there is still a highly placed mole in the government and he wants Star Risk to catch the culprit. Once they arrive on Dampier they are immediately caught up in the politics and espionage shenanigans of the planet and must hire mercenaries to guard their own backs if they want to live to free an innocent man and catch the traitor.

The members of Star Risk are a lovable bunch of misfits who use self-deprecating humor to keep from taking themselves too seriously. Though some supporting items seem familiar such as the skyball game they play seems Harry Potter like and Grok the Chewbacca intellect, these elements are actually fresh and different once the reader clears the surface. The world of Dampier is a treacherous place, particularly suited to the battle-hardened mercenaries who meet force with even more force. Chris Bunch is one of the top authors of military space operas.

      Book Description

Crusaders, Scoundrels, Journalists traces the lives and times of nearly 300 American newspeople, from the colonial printer who wrote about the sex life of the king of France to the Global Village anchor who as a young man stood up dates in order to listen to Edward R. Murrow.
Great journalism has a rich past. So does lousy journalism. This entertaining book introduces readers to the inside story of news, as told by journalistic sleuths and sloths, martyrs and moguls, First Amendment heroes and notorious scandalmongers.

Hear them talk about how and why they do what they do:
"Telegraph fully all news...and when there is no news send rumors."

"Even more than the words, the way the words are said colors the telling."

      --Susan Stamberg

"You just use pictures when you have them and words when you don't."
      --David Brinkley

"There were virtually no Negro role models in communications in 1946... So what was I doing on this journey?"
              --Carl Rowan

"I didn't wave the flag and
didn't burn my bra. I just kept on working and stayed close to women on and off the camera."

      --Brian Lamb

"Journalism is actually the last unexplored literary frontier."
      --Truman Capote
With the help of some of the nation's leading journalism historians, Crusaders, Scoundrels, Journalists profiles intriguing American newspeople from the 1690s to the 1990s. What we love and hate about them is what we love and hate about our culture. Knowing them and where they've been is a first step toward better understanding where we are today. The Newseum and The Freedom Forum
The Newseum, the only interactive museum of news, opened in April 1997 to popular and critical acclaim. The 72,000-square-foot Newseum is the largest operating program of The Freedom Forum, a nonpartisan, international foundation dedicated to free press, free speech, and free spirit for all people. Other operating programs are the Media Studies Center in New York City and the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Freedom Forum was established in 1991 under the direction of founder Allen H. Neuharth as successor to the Gannett Foundation. That foundation had been established by Frank E. Gannett in 1935.

      3 out of 5 stars Where's Charles Kuralt?.......2000-01-18

I was in bliss, paging through these journalism greats when I suddenly realized the author left out Charles Kuralt. As a journalism student, I'd so much rather read about beloved people like Kuralt than 15-minutes of famers like Matt Drudge. The authors even included his replacement, Charles Osgood. What gives, editors? Shunning him because of his affair?

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for teaching journalism, history, media, criticism.......1999-06-13

I've been lucky enough to see the uncorrected proof of this work: It's excellent -- by the editor of the Newseum, a truly amazing news museum in the DC area -- his previous work, The News History Gazette, is used by professors in some of the best journalism schools in the country, like Missouri. Includes great essay by Tim Russert. Loads of "corrected history," and "did you know."

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the northern Indian city of Lucknow was famous for its beautiful gardens, extraordinary buildings, menageries, music and dancing, exquisite food, and lavish parties. The wealthy nawabs were only part of a glittering scene that enchanted and shocked
both visitors and inhabitants. Here, Rosie Llewellyn-Jones examines some of the more curious byways of this city's past, including the true story of the notorious 'Barber of Lucknow' and the sad history of the European graveyards. Filled with stories and featuring many recently rediscovered
illustrations, the book will appeal to general readers and historians of the period.

            Book Description

As if history and nature had not provided wonders enough, through the ages humans themselves have contrived more marvels to deceive one another. Sometimes they have concocted evidence when none was available to prove pet theories; sometimes their intention has been to impress or defraud; sometimes they have acted merely for sport.
Robert Silverberg tells the stories of a baker's dozen of these scientific hoaxers in a lively, good-humored book that ranges through time and across continents. Here are perpetual-motion machines and space rockets, men on the moon and serpents in the sea. The rogues’ gallery is a varied one: Dr. Mesmer, who cast his hypnotic spell on eighteenth-century Paris; Charles Dawson, whose Piltdown Man challenged evolution; Dr. Cook, with his tale of “discovering” the North Pole; and many others.
These are fascinating stories and more than just entertainment. The author explains the scientific background against which the hoaxes appeared and the detective work that led to their exposure. The schemers teach us to be alert, to challenge the evidence, and to appreciate the healthy skepticism that characterizes the scientific method.

                  Book Description

Alberta has a long-standing reputation for attracting and producing characters with scant respect for the law and even less for public opinion. In his latest collection of short biographies, Brian Brennan, Dave Greber Award winner for freelance writing, looks at the flamboyant, eccentric, and downright bizzare people who established this provincial tradition. People such as:

They're a wild and unruly bunch, but Alberta couldn't be prouder of them.

                    Book Description

Between 1880 and 1914, thousands of British remittance men came to the Canadian West, urged overseas by a rapidly changing British society. In a land of cowboys and loggers, their attempts to recreate the aura of landed gentry were sometimes misunderstood - and often ridiculed. Many Canadians thought steeplechase tracks, easels, tennis and "taking ease" were futile pursuits for a group of otherwise pleasant and well-educated men. What some saw as a chase after failed dreams, a lack of family ties, and a refusal to ever settle down to serious work, remittance men saw as the very things that made their lives worth living. With a hint of nostalgia for the pre-war era that harboured these colourful outcasts of a diminishing empire, Mark Zuehlke fondly recounts the often humourous and sometimes dismal efforts of "good breeding" in Canada's West.

5 out of 5 stars Praying for Results!.......2004-01-15

We're told that some people cancel out their prayers by praying for one result, then expecting another. Worry focuses the mind on the opposite of the desired result. Biblical prayer is faith-centered, i.e., the desire of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (see Hebrews 11:1). Reading this book helps one to pray more effectively because it conditions the mind to expect the desired outcome.

Keeping Joseph (in the book of Genesis) in mind, we're reminded that what the enemy means for harm, God can turn for our good. He is so creative, He can create good out of chaos. Prayer causes us to realize God is at work in circumstances and to expect His intervention. Meyer writes, "Remember we are not the potter, God is, and we certainly don't know hot to 'fix' people."

On the issue of praying fervently, what she teaches reminds me of something I read by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale along the same lines. She says such praying involves putting one's whole self into prayer. All the mind, the emotion, and the will are included in praying fervently.

This is a powerful, life-changing book. Its insight is practical and all encompassing. Read it, mark it, put it into effect.

This is the first of Joyce Meyer's book that I am reading and it would not be my last. This lady writes with such a Holy strength and command, it draws you like magnet. She explains in great detail those things that bother us and play about in our minds as we strive to do our utmost best living Christian lives. There is something comforting in the way this book is written probably because it has answered so many of our puzzling questions. May all who read this material be richly blessed by this great and wonderful work of God's servant, Joyce Meyer.

I found this book to be a very helpful resource. The author is a talented bible teacher and uses scripture to share the simple, but POWERFUL truth about prayer. I have purchased several of these to share with friends and family - they borrow it and then want one of their own!
