Gone Fishin' actually marks the first appearance of Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins, as well as his homicide-prone sidekick Raymond "Mouse" Alexander. But the story takes place in 1939, when both protagonists are still living in Houston. This is no tightly plotted mystery, but an atmospheric coming-of-age story, which gives the reluctant Easy an education in sex and death, family and forgiveness. As always, Mosley's prose is a marvel: musical, funny, and full of no-frills lyricism. And the unfolding of Easy's character is every bit as gripping as the breakneck plotting of the later installment.

Book Description

In the beginning...there was Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins and Raymond "Mouse" Alexander -- two young men setting out in life, hitting the road in a "borrowed" '36 Ford headed for Pariah, Texas. The volatile Mouse wants to retrieve money from his stepfather so he can marry his EttaMae. But on their steamy bayou excursion, Mouse will choose murder as a way out, while Easy's past liaison with EttaMae floats precariously in his memory. Easy and Mouse are coming of age -- and everything they ever knew about friendship and about themselves is coming apart at the seams....

4 out of 5 stars A story of Easy Rawlins' early days.......2007-09-17

This is Mosley's original Easy Rawlins story, written in the late 80s. Featuring a 19 year old Easy, the book describes a road trip he takes to Pariah, Texas in the company of his best friend, the volatile Raymond "Mouse" Alexander. Mouse, soon to be married, is traveling to Pariah to confront his stepfather, Reese Corn, over some money he feels is his birthright. While Easy becomes involved in several adventures/misadventures of his own, Mouse relentlessly pursues Corn, hounding him to the point of insanity. Mouse will do anything, and use anyone, to get what he wants.

Owing more to Flannery O'Connor than Ross MacDonald, Gone Fishin' is a treat for fans of Mosley's Easy Rawlins series, providing background into the complex relationship between Easy and Mouse. It's also interesting due to the presence of a younger, more naive, less cynical Easy. Mosley mines this naiveté for all it's worth, evoking much laughter at Easy's expense. It's refreshing to see a lighter hearted Easy; quite a contrast to the world weary man we see in the later novels.

This is a coming of age novel in the truest sense, as the book chronicles Easy and Mouse's early steps toward manhood. For Mouse, it means triumph over the man who made his childhood miserable; for Easy, it involves his momentous decision to learn to read. Both men will see the world differently after the events of the novel. Mouse, imbued with confidence, reaffirms his instinctive belief that might makes right, and Easy realizes that the world is a very complex place. Lessons learned, both go forth to make their way in that world, as chronicled in Devil in a Blue Dress, A Red Death, White Butterfly, Black Betty and A Little Yellow Dog.

Gone Fishin' is a winning bildungsroman, well told in Mosley's straightforward, no-frills style. Plain as it may be, this style is amazing for the range of emotions it evokes--Mosley can make you laugh out loud at Easy's foolishness, or cringe at Mouse's casual violence. Like the other novels in the series, Gone Fishin' explores a mystery, but unlike those novels, murder is not the focus. The mysteries explored here are deeper, involving friendship, love, revenge and destiny. Certainly not as chilling as murder, but ultimately more compelling.

2 out of 5 stars The Bottom of the Pile of Mosley Books.......2007-03-03

Fans of Mosley will buy this prequel to the Easy Rawlins / Mouse Alexander stories to find out how their anti-heroes were `made'. This book is liable to disappoint, however. The setting is rural South, not 5th Ward Houston, and the young men seem more chaotic than inchoate. Mouse, however, remains his murderous loyal self and drives the action.

Mosley's difficulty lies in portraying the secondary characters of this novel. They fall largely in three buckets - old-style holy roller good, blood evil, and grotesque. The stereotyping of rural blacks is blatant enough that Mosley seems to uphold the prejudices of 1920's redneck bigots. Fortunately he redeems this broad brush on several occasions with jewels of description and language, and a few twists of sympathy for his characters.

Not a best effort - worth reading out of the library, but not buying.

God bless Walter Mosley! Mosley has provided the inner-city middle schoolers that I have read to for years characters that they can identify with, and Mosley's writing skill and character development are something to behold. This is one of the shortest of Mosley's Easy Rawlins mysteries, but it is sure to attract students to the series. A wonderful author with a diverse pool of stories. 5 out of 5 stars how mouse and easy shared a common youth.......2006-02-24

i am an avid reader of walter mosley. i especially like his easy rawlings books, how they and easy grow and change with the times. this book takes us back to their teens, sharing secrets, telling of places and people that i found very intresting. it also shares some of the things that have made them close and shows what has cemented their relationship. again, walter mosley kept my attention from the first page to the last. i am a woman and i have gotton several of my male friends to read mr mosleys books. even men that usually do not enjoy novels. i am always eagerly awaiting his next book. one day i hope to meet the man.

3 out of 5 stars So-So Prequel to the Easy Rawlins Series.......2004-11-14

If you've read the Easy Rawlins series, this prequel novella may come as a bit of a surprise. Set in 1939, when Easy is a naive and somewhat innocent 19, it's the story of him and Mouse taking a little road trip from Houston to the bayou country of Pariah, Texas. Mouse is planning to visit his fearsome stepfather to try and get some money out of him to finance his wedding to Etta-Mae. Easy is enlisted as driver on this enterprise, and the tone turns dark right away, when they pick up a hitchhiking young couple. The man is on the run for having possibly beaten another man to death in a bar fight, and his girl is a sexy little flirt who seems to enjoy having men argue over her. Mouse convinces them to let him help, and you know the only thing that will come of it is sex and violence. Mouse leads them all deep into the back country to stay with a strange old witch-like woman, who mixes them potions and weaves a different kind of magic on Easy. Instead of the straightforward realistic crime story readers of the series might expect, this is an atmospheric and sometimes surreal gothic tale. Even in such a brief story, Mosley manages to cram in a lot of characters with their own stories, but it all boils down to Mouse's quest for a portion of his mother's dowry. Of course, everything climaxes in violence, and this so unsettles Easy that he is spurred to leave Houston and join the Army. It's not so much a coming of age story as a loss of innocence one.

I am a big fan of the "Randalls", and this book is a great part of the family.

    5 out of 5 stars The randall's are back........2005-12-23

This book has it all. Danger, suspense and a romance. Jessica is brett randall's daughter who has decided to leave hollywood and return home to her family. However, when she see'steve carter lying in the road with a shotgun wound she knows she has to help him. She drives him to wyoming where her family are, and being the randall's they all become involved and help all they can to keep both jessica and steve safe.
Steve has proof that several of the DEA agents he has worked with are corrupt, and want him dead. Jessica comes up with a plan so that steve along with her help can manage to get to washington with the proof he has. It does prove to be dangerous as jessica gets held hostage. This story makes a fast reading and I found it very exciting. It is also great to read about all the other randall's and how they are getting on.
I could read about this family forever and not get bored. Judy christenberry has written a gem of a story for jessica randall and I cannot wait for the next on.

                Book Description

This book explores the accomplishments of the golden age of “macrohistory,” the sociologically informed analysis of long-term patterns of political, economic, and social change that has reached new heights of sophistication in the last decades of the twentieth century.

It describes the scholarly revolution that has taken place in the Marxian-inspired theory of revolutions, the shift to a state-breakdown model in which revolutions, rather than bubbling up from discontent below, start at the top in the fiscal strains of the state. The author links revolutions to military-centered transformations of the state, and reviews how he used this theory in the early 1980s to predict the breakdown of the Soviet empire.

He goes on to show the implications of viewing states and societies from the outside in, including the geopolitical patterns that affect the legitimacy of dominant ethnic groups and thus determine the direction of ethnic assimilation or fragmentation. Another application is the author’s new theory of democratization, which asserts that democracy depends not merely on a widening of the franchise but on a geopolitical pattern favoring federated structures of collegially shared power.

Using this new theoretical tool, the author argues that Anglophone scholars have polemically misinterpreted German history, and that the roots of the Holocaust cannot be determined by German-bashing but must be attributed to processes that affect all of us. Other essays generalize about the historical dynamics and transformations of markets. Going beyond Weber’s Eurocentric model, the author proposes a more general theory that explains the origins of capitalism in Japan on an independent but parallel path.

Asimov did a hell of a job gathering all his stories in a series of books. In The Complete Stories Vol. 1 his handwrittings from the 1940's just up to 1967 are printed in a wonderful science-fiction masterpiece. Asimov is well reknowned as the father of SciFi, and this stories demonstrate how he can write about politics, medicine, science, anthropology, or even sexuality. This book gives you down-to-earth, really involving stories, that will surely catch your attention. You'll find stories about the gigantic Multivac predicting electorial votes from just one person; a robot flirtering his bosses' wife; a super-intelligent computer who wants to comit suicide; and lots of different stories in a wide variety of topics, but all related to SciFi.

"No one has done so much as Mr. Eliade to inform literature students in the West about 'primitive' and Oriental religions. . . . Everyone who cares about the human adventure will find new information and new angles of vision."—Martin E. Marty, New York Times Book Review

5 out of 5 stars History of Ideas, Volume I by Mircea Eliade.......2007-03-29

The product arrived on time as stipulated. Mircea Eliade is a must for students of mythology who want to go beyond a myth's story and come to understand how and why it was written, and why it remains eternal.

5 out of 5 stars Sourcebook on religion........2005-09-08

An excellent source of information about early development of religion. It shows the evolution of human thought with respect to metaphysical matters.

5 out of 5 stars The human and the spiritual.......2003-12-31

Mircea Eliade has spent a lifetime exploring the origins, meaning and mysteries of mankind's spiritual inner being. He is the Joseph Campbell of religion - not myth. This first volume was ably translated (from the French) into clear and direct English - a hallmark of his writing. It is difficult to speak knowingly of neolithic religion because the evidence is largely circumstantial and evolutionary. That is, we divine from our own religious present what must have existed prior to the forming of current ideas.

One of his main points is that peoples around the world, for whatever reason, seemed to be instinctually drawn toward the worship of something - an object, animal, human or unseen god or goddess. In this first volume he explores various cultures and their beliefs - the Mayas, Greeks, Iranians, neolithic man, Egypt, other Middle East groups...a dazzling array of cultures and societies. As the imagination grew, so did belief in an unseen world.

Of particular interest is the section on ancient Israeli beliefs and the origins of Yahweh. The chapters on religion in Greece were notable for their abundant detail. Even in the most isolated areas, the same rites and beliefs emerged - the idea of sacrifice, the belief in another life, the battle of good vs evil, the idea of holy representatives and eventually the thought of eternal life.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but let me mention some criticisms.......2002-06-03

I like to say that Eliade's work is the first--but not the last--word in comparative religion. The best introduction to his thought is "Patterns in Comparative Religion."

The greatness of this history is that Eliade actually writes about almost everything, ever. So these three volumes are a solid introduction to the totality of religion. Since all of us lack familiarity with something, we can all fill in some significant gaps in our knowledge with these books.

But unfortunately, it's not the best introduction to any specific thing that it covers. If you already know about some subject, then Eliade's coverage of it proves completely useless and superficial. It seems that Eliade's purpose was to show how every important religious phenomenon in history relates to his pet theories. In his defense, perhaps this is simply inevitable when one person tries to write about all of religion in 1000 pages. Certainly, there is nothing else like this out there because the task is enormous. If nothing else, the fact that Eliade researched and wrote this is amazing.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2001-01-11

This is a superb series on the history of religion, and incidentally serves as a fine introduction to comparative religion. The only real weakness is in this first volume: I've never like the treatment of paleolithic religion here, which seems abrupt. But this caveat is far too minor to dissuade anyone from reading these wonderful books.
