Book Description

Just in case my Spanish is as terrible as I suspect it is! Once again the teenage hero from "The City of the Beasts", Alexander Cold, his grandmother Kate and his Brazilian friend Nadia Santos, go on an expedition to a remote country, unsullied by the modern world. However, a greedy capitalist is out to steal the golden dragon, a priceless artefact which the inhabitants believe protects their country by making prophecies. Will they be able to save the dragon, and thereby save the kingdom?
I'm afraid I found this book as predictable as its predecessor - it really consists of a set of borrowed themes and locations mixed together, with little to surprise the reader. For a lost city in the jungle, we now have a remote kingdom in the Himalayas; for the jungle beasts, we now have yetis, as so on. I know this book was aimed at teenagers, but that doesn't excuse its faults. I've made a bad start with Allende. I think I'll try her other works and give her the benefit of the doubt.

Definitely a big change in topic for Mrs. Allende, but delightlful as usual. In spite of being fiction, still raises very real issues about the Earth where we live, relationships, and self-discovery. Wonderful!

Book Description
Three centuries ago in Scotland a curse was born of the long-standing feud between the Claren and the MacKinnon clans. Now, generations later, destiny has decreed that three women, the last of the Claren line, be granted one final chance to set things right.
Maggie, Cailean, and Delaney Claren are three cousins who grow up unaware of one another--until an inheritance brings them together. Now mysterious journals and the deed to an ancient Scottish castle will bring them face-to-face with the warriors at the heart of the MacKinnon family, three brothers sentenced to cruel fates by a terrible curse.
Duncan is trapped in the form of a ghost, Rory must live an immortal life alone, and Alexander has been wrenched by time from the past to the present, with no way back. Ferociously compelling, dangerously relentless, they are bound by no mortal laws--except desire for the three Claren women. The journals speak of one key that can break the powerful spell. And finding that key will plunge them all into a world of unforeseeable danger and tantalizing desire....

Excellent Read.......2006-03-29
This book was excellent. I had never read this author before and was shocked with how good the book was. It is about to fueding scotish clans and a curse put on them. It is so good, I had a hard time putting it down. If you like scotish historical romance you will love this book. I highly reccommend giving it a try.
The Legend Mackinnon.......2005-11-16
I usually do not leave a review of the books I order, but this was one of the best books I have ever read!! The story centers around three brothers from the 1700's who have been cursed to learn a lesson about love. Duncan , the middle brother is cursed to haunt a North Carolina mountain cabin near where he and his former bethrothed died. The youngest brother Rory is cursed with immortality. The eldest brother Alexander is sent through a time portal where he spends the past seven years in modern times. The each of the three brothers encounters one of three female cousins who just happen to be descendents of the women who cursed them. I won't give away any more of the plot than that, but I have to say that Part 4 of this book had me in tears! If you like time travel romance, you will love this book!
I loved this book!.......2005-09-01
I throughly enjoyed this book. I found it hard to put down. The characters are real and inviting. I highly recommend it.
This should be the never ending story!.......2005-07-23
It all started a few years back when my Sister went to Kentucky. While out shopping she picked up this book, The Legend MacKinnon. Having never read anything of Ms. Kauffman's before she was suprised to find how good it was. When she got home she handed the book to me and said, "I'll understand if you don't call me for a few days. I know where you'll be". Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. From the moment that Maggie meets Duncan to the time he... well I'll leave that to you to find out. There is one point I actually yelled out, "NO!"That can't happen. Don't let it end that way!.This is a story that goes from modern times into an historical romance/time travel story and back again. Everything you are looking for in life love and men you will find in at least one of the MacKinnon Brothers. One word of warning however. You will have your up's and downs while reading this book. From the first chapter to the last the joy the hope the tragedy..the connection you feel to all the characters leaves you wanting more. The only time I was disappointed with this book was when I reached the end. The lives of the characters was one I didn't want to leave.
I've read several books over and over again and I'd lost this one for awhile. I'd passed it on to another friend , who lost it. I've searched for 2 years to find it again and now that I have I'll never let it go.
A really cool idea.......2002-10-08
I thought this book started out as one of the coolest ideas I had seen in a long, long time. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the story, and the order in which the characters were introduced, this one book could have actually been three in a series and probably would have worked better that way. I felt very close to the first couple, because I had been with them through the whole story. It would have been ok to carry this book on to a second one an introduce the second couple, etc. That way there would have been more character development. As it was, the third couple's trials and tribulations basically meant nothing to me. I didn't get enough time to like them and feel the sparks before the the climax happened and the book ended! It would be so cool if the author rewrote this book and either made it an epic of 1000 pages... or a series of 3 books with the real climax happening at the end of the 3rd story. (Hey it works for Diana Gabaldon.) Each couple's story could have been strong enough to stand alone. It's still a cool book though and a really unusual supernatural manifestation.

A wonderful and exciting short read.......2005-03-08
This book is wonderful. It is about a girl that is left out because she has silver eyes and can move things by thinking about them. She hears that there are other kids like her and tries to find them. The only part I don't like is that the author leaves a bit of a cliffhanger at the end.
The Girl With The Silver Eyes.......2003-07-17
This is an awesome book. It is about a girl named Katie, who has(of course)silver eyes. She has the ability to move things w/her mind, which is called telekinesis, I think. She doesn't have any friends her age, because they all think she is weird and they are afraid of anyone that is different (namely, her). Katie hears about some kids her age that might be like her. She tries to find them, and gets into some situations that complicate things, but Katie is desperate for a/some friend/s who understands her. I definitely reccomend this book for kids, or anyone, actually. (Although I hope there is a sequal written for this book, because this book is begging for a sequal)

Book Description
The Osha examines a religion. (not a cult) practiced by hundreds of thousands of people in different countries principally Cuba, Brazil, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Latin America and most recently the United States. The Osha provides the stories, history, types and manner of divination, the procedures of vestment, names of the deities and everything which is part of the Yoruba/Santeria Religion. A bold work of great intimacy with "The Religion."
Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-01-18
What a wonderful Book to start out with when you are new to the religion!
Mixed feelings.......2007-01-18
Well, I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it is very thorough; on the other hand, there are bits and pieces that are not considered accurate in my lineage, and overall it seems to be a bit misogynistic. I guess my biggest concern has to deal with the section regarding the Asiento/Santo/Kariocha ceremony. While I can appreciate the author's desire to remove the secrecy element from the religion, there is something to be said for maintaining a degree of mystery, that allows an individual to experience something without preconceived notions. All I can say is that I am grateful that I had already been crowned before I read this book, and that I would discourage any uninitiated godchildren from reading this book simply because I wouldn't want to possibly ruin the joyful surprise and spiritual enlightment that can only come from an unbiased mind when presented with the Divine.
I would certainly recommend this book -- perceived errors and all -- to those who have already been initiated with their Santo, while cautioning others to practice self-restraint and to skip over those sections that deal with assorted initiations that they, themselves, have not yet received.
Respectfully,
Elaine Hall
The Osha.......2006-11-10
Great book. A lot of detail. Great for anybody who wants to learn.
Very thorough.......2006-02-23
This book on the religion is extremely and very thoroughly written. The amount of detail that is in this book is a very good introduction for any neophyte who has recently been initiated into the religion and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in learning about the Lukumi or who needs to be educated on certain topics. However, any book written on the religion always leaves out information that is supposed to be kept secret and I am glad not ALL of the information was revealed. Nevertheless, it is a great read and interesting information has been written.
The Osha.......2005-07-13
I found it very informative, it explains way too much on my religion but, in part it is good, like that people get a better and total impression of what it is all about and that we do not worship the devil, but orishas whom were once on earth. The writer did a good job in the translation of the original book.
I would also like to have the spanish version which I had, and lent it to someone, but it never came back to me. I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know when it will be available or if there is a used one that someone wants to sell.
Thank you.
