Book Description
Straight from the canine's mouth comes this truly Wilde narrative of the life and times of Dorian Greyhound. From his lowly origins and brutish upbringing to his well-deserved position as cherished family member, this self-made dog marks a lot of territory, though he would blush (if he could) to admit it. With a dry wit and as much candor as his old-school manners allow, he recounts his physically and emotionally harrowing journey from an Arizona race track to his Hollywood Hills mansion. His tale has something to offer us all.

Awesome.......2007-02-07
I enjoyed this book (and you will, too) because it shows how truly awesome greyhounds are!
I'm hoping for a sequel.......2006-04-07
Perfect. I read Dorian Greyhound in one sitting, then read it again - and got choked up at the ending both times through.
Disclosure: I'm the coauthor of ANIMALS IN TRANSLATION, and I read Dorian Greyhound in manuscript. I was amazed at the way Sheryl Longin, working in her own corner of the world, had captured and dramatized the ideas about animal thinking Temple and I were writing about in our book. None of us had ever met, but we were talking about the same phenomenon.
It's a strange thing to say, but Sheryl Longin has an 'ear' for animals!
After I read Dorian Greyhound, I told Sheryl that in a perfect world I would have a new Dorian book sitting under the Christmas tree each year.
I still feel that way, and I hope Sheryl Longin doesn't stop at one.
So Much Like My GreyThound.......2006-02-25
This was a sweet, well written book and very authentic. I have a retired racer also and this book could have been written about him. A great, quick read for anyone who would like to know about life with a Greyhound and for those who already do! I only wish it had been a little longer.
A Warm and Beautiful Autobiography.......2006-01-23
Dorian Greyhound is adored and loved by his so-called owners. He is actually the master and kindly lets the human beings share the home---as long as they promise to behave themselves. Dorian will steal your heart away. He valiantly overcomes the trials and tribulations of being something of an abandoned canine compelled to make a new life for himself in the strange land of California. A newborn baby enters the picture. Tess is a little girl and demands a lot of attention. Dorian Greyhound worships the ground she walks on. She is now the center of his universe.
The publisher promises to correct the mistake on the front cover of the book. Somehow Sheryl Longin's name, the "beloved mistress," is wrongly listed as author. Dorian Greyhound was not in the least bit pleased. Oh well, he decided to cut her a bit of slack. His justified retaliation was limited to tearing up the living room couch. "They are only human," adds Dorian. What can one expect from such second class creatures? God created the world for the dogs. Homo sapiens were merely a last minute addition. Maybe someday they will learn their place in the universe's pecking order. Dorian Greyhound at least hopes this is the case.
Terrific animal fiction in the tradition of Ackerley.......2006-01-08
I loved this witty tale of greyhound Dorian written in a style which is more Ackerley than Wilde, but with a tinge of both. My only criticism is that it is too short - looking forward to a sequel.

An easy and enjoyable read!.......2007-07-27
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a white/Italian man married to a wonderful black woman, it obviously hit very close to home--all in a good way! It's well written, has a great story with believable characters, and provides an uplifting perspective on inter-racial relationships. Yes it is a little fairy-tale'ish, at times, but that's OK. I smiled, laughed out loud, grew sad and even got choked-up at points throughout the book. And best of all, the story and characters make you think about human nature, love, race, and relationships. In this story, like in life, we are reminded that while there remain many differences between black folks and white folks, there are also many, many similarities as well. We are all members of one race...the human race. Peace, and enjoy the read.
AGAIN, with the stereotypes..........2006-07-25
I really wanted to enjoy this book. I am a fan of I/R books/movies, so I try to get my hands on any that I can. My first JJ Murray book was Original Love. I was a bit letdown by that novel, but I decided to give him another shot. I am truly afraid that this may be the last time I read his work. Let us count the ways:
1.The stereotypical black woman: Whenever I see (read) a character like RENEE, I am constantly rolling my eyes. She's loud, pushy, brash, and mostly a mess. I found it ironic that she worked in a call center b/c my first job out of college was in one and I saw many women with her characteristics. Anywhoo, I found no reason in the book, other than she "git it from her mama" for her attitude about several things. I would not wish her on ANY of my male friends. She was bossy, overly critical, racist, prejudice, etc. She picked on poor Giovanni about everything. From his smell, to the way he talked, it got on my nerves. Plus, I struggle to believe that a man with an immaculately clean living space would have trouble controlling his B.O. Anyway, she never came off to me as someone I could identify with on any level. The "my people, your people, our people" FOOLISHNESS got on my last working nerve. It was so uncalled for. Everything she said was colored by race, it made her hard to tolerate.
2.Giovanni--WHAT A PUSHOVER. I could not believe he took so much from this girl. Who cares if he had been crushin' on her since high school. No excuse for putting up with her crap. I thought the games she played should have pushed him over the edge. I would agree that for his character to have been a lead, he was severly underdeveloped. Since it was a story about BOTH of them, it would have been nice to have heard each of their sides instead of Renee's voice all the time.
3.Renee's mom: ANNOYING. Sounds like she wanted to be her friend not her mom. I can see where Renee got her ways from. Oh, I wish my mother would take pee samples to see if I'm pregnant. Not only is that gross, but it's too far out there.
4.Another thing that got me about this novel is that for a pair that hooked up in 12 hours (read: decided to get married) how could the I/R aspect possibly be your biggest issue? What about the fact that you really don't know each other?
5.The pregnancy. This seemed to never be taken seriously. And a baby IS serious. First, Miss Renee is playing games before she even knows if she's pregnant. We never read about the doctor appointments (EVER!). Renee's mom forbids (um, your daughter is 26) them to speak for about four months. Hello! Baby in the picture! That was such a ridiculous thing to do.
Anyway, I could be typing all night pointing out the displeasing things in the book. I will say it was an extremely quick read, but other than that, the actual story left a lot to be desired.
KIND OF CUTE...RESPECTABLE DEBUT...............2006-07-20
...but disturbingly sterotypical. A tale about the unexpected romance that blooms in all the wrong places...between the young, single, African-American Renee Howard and the equally young and single--although Italian--Giovanni Luchesi. The two meet one snowy night when Renee becomes snowbound in front of the Luchesi family restaurant....and Giovanni offers his assistance. Fresh out of a relationship with a two-timing, gorgeous African prince, romance with a White boy is the last thing that Renee Howard can imagine. But there is something so gentle, so loving and so sincere about Giovanni that Renee finds him incredibly attractive, and soon the two of them become the most unlikeliest of couples. Giovanni professes his love for Renee, and she for him....; if only she can get Giovanni to pass muster with the most important person in Renee's life--and the most difficult; Shirl Howard, her mother.
Although a cute tale that basically reinforces the belief that "love conquers all," the story left me feeling that Black women are indeed overbearing, bossy and loud--compelling characteristics of the three main female characters in the book. I disliked Renee, and the way she spoke to Giovanni--I found it demeaning and emasculating. Colette struck me as loud and lacking decorum...as did Shirl, Renee's mother. I disliked them all, and could not for the life of me figure out how either of them had a man at all. The saving grace of this novel for me was the fact that it was based on the author's true life romance with his African-American wife. Despite the sterotypes in the characterization, I did find the subject matter to be somewhat of a refreshing change.

This book is a great read. I wih there were more selections in this genre. As a suggestion you should check out An Infrequent Pairing by SaFiya Dalilah.
Pathetic .......2006-06-04
What the hell was this novel about! It actually did not deserve any stars but 0 star was not an option. Believe me, I have read Romeo and Juliet and this was no modern day Romeo and Juliet. I was completely lost and could not understand how the writer justifys within one night, Renee (black cable compay customer representative) needing help to unstuck her car during a snowstorm, sleeping with Jay (white Italian restaurant cowner with his Dad) who came to her assistance. From the description of Jay I am not sure why any woman would give him a second look. My only conclusion is that this novel was written for the under 20 crowd.

Book Description
Lesbian writers include some of the most innovative and adventurous writers of this century, but only recently have they been given their due attention in terms of critical study. This book is the first anthology to discuss the subject of lesbianism as it relates to the critical interaction among readers, writers, and literary critics. It explores lesbian texts in terms of identification, meaning, and interpretation, and examines the complex entanglements of identity, voice, intersubjectivity, textualities, and sexualities.
"A wonderful exploration of the varieties of life choices lesbians can and do make. This book once again proves that telling the truth aboutyourself is a revolutionary act."
Rita Mae Brown
"They will probably drum Karla Jay and Joanne Glasgow out of the academy for this one...A college text that is witty, literate, interesting, and can be read for fun. What's the world coming to? Lesbian Texts and Contexts: dry title, wonderful book."
Barbara Grier, Editor Naiad Press
"To call this collection much-needed or eagerly awaited would be the understatement of the year. It's thrilling ot think of the new readings of classic texts, the new directions for theory, andmaybe best of allthe new range of literary encounters in the classroom, that will be enabled by this radical intervention on the critical scene."
Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Duke University
"Excellent,...challenging, sexy,...never boring."

Fascinating essays featuring fabulous writing.......2007-05-28
My favorite piece is `Cruising the Libraries' where Lee Lynch tells of her adventures and struggles in the 1950's through the 1960 (and I imagine well into the 1970's) in finding literature with people like herself and in the telling give us a list of books that are must reads.
I especially liked the detailed `works cited' after each essay.

Life is not a fairytale.......2006-05-22
I finished this story in a day and it's amazing how a book can move someone this way..... I was enjoying it so much until the unthinkable happens, when I read the first book, there were tears from laughing so much, with this just tears of sadness... I don't think I can read this again.
WHHHYYY! WHHHYYYY!.......2006-02-25
Okay, I loved this just as much as I loved Renee and Jay. I should have listened to the author's note and picked up an harliquinn instead though. LOL This book was well written and took you on the emotional roller coaster. Yes I was very pissed off at the end of the book, hell, well before the end of the book. I regretted reading it, and went to read Renee and Jay again, just so I could get the light back. LOL I have only cried once reading a book, but now I can add twice. Never again! This was like a real family, although fiction. They dealt with real issues that were real for them. They were only human, and they made mistakes, but they loved each other. In the end that was all that mattered.
RAY AND J 2-.......2006-01-12
I loved the book. The book mirrors life. In life there are no perfect endings.
The characters are realistic. Giovanni reminds me of my husband. He is quiet and strong.
Love endures all things.....hopes all things............2005-10-28
Where can I find a man like Jay? Seriously, it made me laugh.......then out of the blue, blindsided (in a good way). I like that aspect of the book, unpredictable. This is a well written book, and it still has the same element of the first one, funny, romantic, sweet, real.
If you love quality I/R story, this is the one to read!

Computer savvy teens, a war game gone awry, and good old-fashioned intrigue are the elements of The Deadliest Game, a high-octane episode in Tom Clancy's wildly popular teen series Net Force. Clancy and co-author Steve Pieczenik envision a futuristic society where people enliven their dull lives with intense virtual experiences. One of the most favored of these virtual realities is a medieval war game called Sarxos. Players leave their physical bodies at home while an implant in their head carries them through their computer to the virtual Dominion of Sarxos, a land where they may be anyone-- from a reigning warlord to a practicing hedge-wizard. But when players who are winning too many battles in Sarxos start getting stalked and attacked in the real world, it becomes clear that one player has begun taking the game far too seriously.
Enter teen cyber-sleuths Meg and Leif, experienced Sarxos players. As members of the Net Force Explorers, a teen auxiliary of the cyber-crime-stopping Net Force, Meg and Leif start questioning characters in the alternate reality. Even when their boss instructs them to stop, they stay hot on the trail of the online Sarxian player who is "bouncing" any threatening opponent out of the game. But time is running out in the search for the online criminal, and Meg and Leif may find themselves the next bouncees!
In Net Force, Tom Clancy has created a cyber-thrilling series that will transition into the next millennium with ease. The breathless action and abrupt plot transitions between the real world and virtual reality will fascinate teen computer fiends and young video gamers alike. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description
The Cage is a ring enclosed by a steel box where participants are urged to fight to the death - an illegal sport that attracts some of the world's richest and most powerful people as its shadowy patrons. This is the true story of the star of this deadly sport. In this compelling account of his fight for survival, "X" tells of his twelve-year career in The Cage. Transported to fights like some medieval warlord, he was drugged by opponents against his will and almost murdered by a gang intent on preventing him taking on another fighter, because of his reputation as the most deadly opponent in the world. "X" breaks the sport's strict code of silence to tell, with Wensley Clarkson's help, how he started life on the mean streets, and was led into petty crime then - just months before his 16th birthday - recruited to become the star of this most deadly of sports.

Indispensable.......2007-09-10
A truly indispesable collection of the "Magsiterium" -- the teachings of the Catholic Church in an easily accesible, annotated format. This needs to be on the shelf of every Catholic who wants to go to the next level of his/her faith.
Excellent Collection of Original Texts.......2004-07-06
This book is a classic collection of documents relating to Catholic beliefs, morals, and practices from 100 AD until the present (including many writings of Pope John Paul II). The contents are mostly documents from Church Councils, creeds, Papal decrees, and various other sources of Catholic thought. The sections are: Symbols and Professions of Faith, Revelation and Faith, Tradition and Scripture, The Triune God, Humankind and the World, Original Justice and the Fall, Jesus Christ, Mary, The Church, The Church and Churches, The Church and World Religions, The Church and Missions, Christian Worship, the Sacraments, Baptism/Confirmation, the Eucharist, Reconciliation/Anointing, Order, Matrimony, the Life of Grace, Principles of Christian Life, The Social Doctrine of the Church, Sexual Order and Respect for Life, and Christian Fulfillment.
The documents are translated into modern English from the original languages, and occasionally have notes, which are always helpful. The introductions to each document provide a nice historical background, and often, a helpful summary of each document. Otherwise, the documents (which are arranged chronologically) are allowed to speak for themselves. I was impressed with the wisdom contained within. They speak for the biblical and historical faith in a clear way, effectively working within each culture, without capitulating to the culture. The social teaching documents are especially interesting in this way, and show a great balance between standing up for what the Church considers right, without forgetting that mercy is always freely available from Christ. I was particularly glad to see many documents relating to potential reunion of East and West, as well as dialogue between the Catholic Church and Protestant churches.
Now I need to explain why I only gave it four stars. The reason is the quality of the book itself. My first copy had dog-eared pages and the binding was strange and uneven, even though it came sealed in plastic from the factory. I sent that copy back thinking it was a defective book. My second copy, sealed as well, also had similar issues. One page was pretty creased, although I could make out the words affected by the creases. A few other pages look like they came out of the presses a little crooked. It is obviously a publishing issue, perhaps only with a certain print-run, but nonetheless a little annoying. However, the price is right and I can overlook this issue seeing how amazing the material inside is. Anybody who is Catholic or wants to know more about the Catholic Church should consider getting this book. While some of the information may seem a little theologically advanced at times, it is well worth diving into.
One-Stop Shopping for Catholic Doctrine.......2003-05-13
What did the Council of Trent teach on the subject of justification? What does Humanae Vitae actually say about contraception? What are the earliest creeds (symbols of the faith) and how to they differ? How has the Church's teaching on the Eucharist been clarified through the centuries? How does John Paul II describe the proper relationship between faith and reason?
This tome, running nearly 1100 pages, is (-to steal from an old Army ad) "a great place to start" one's research into Church teachings. The entries are arranged thematically (-revelation and faith, Tradition and Scripture, the Triune God, the Church, sacraments, and so on) and the Index is good. (Not great, mind you, but good.) Several of JP II's encyclicals are included, so it's quite up to date. (The first edition of this work appeared in 1973; this, the Seventh Revised and Enlarged Edition, contains material as recent as 1999.)
The font is large enough for reading without eye-strain. (Many compendiums fail readers in this regard.) The margins provide breathing room for notes. The paper sucks highlighter yellow pale, but that's accepatable in such a large edition offered at a modest price.
One always wishes for longer excerpts from beloved documents, but the editors have done a matrerful job of providing an overview of the Church's authoritative teachings on the central aspects of the Catholic faith.
Heart of Christian Tradition.......2000-10-15
This is a must for the serious student of Christian theology and history. It contains the critical 'snippets' from counciliar and papal documents of the earliest times to today. The book has the Roman Catholic Church's official responses to problems; from the heresies we encountered in the Patristic Age, to the Reformation, to today's social justice issues. In both spirit and form, it is another Denzinger's Encheridion, except it is in English, not Latin and Greek. As a seminarian, it ranks a place next to the Bible and the Catechism; and as a priest-to-be, it will help solve all those really tough to answer questions!
