Book Description
In Delta of Venus Anaïs Nin penned a lush, magical world where the characters of her imagination possess the most universal of desires and exceptional of talents. Among these provocative stories, a Hungarian adventurer seduces wealthy women then vanishes with their money; a veiled woman selects strangers from a chic restaurant for private trysts; and a Parisian hatmaker named Mathilde leaves her husband for the opium dens of Peru. Delta of Venus is an extraordinarily rich and exotic collection from the master of erotic writing.

Keep this book away from kids.......2007-08-13
I read this book when I was 10, and it absolutely horrified and disgusted me. I had nightmares for years about being sexually molested and was often afraid of boys and men. Now in my early twenties, I realize that the detached style of narration does not mean that the author condones these acts or implies that they are normal and healthy (I refer especially to the rape and pedophilia), and that is a unique, even ground-breaking book due to Nin's style and breadth of imagination.
However, I still think no review of this book is complete without this caveat: Some of what is protrayed is not erotic--it is violent and abusive.
Please, keep this book out of the reach of kids and yes, I would say even teenagers who may not be mature enough to comprehend that difference. Leave something lying around that portrays healthy, loving relationships.
interesting but not necessarily erotic.......2007-05-27
there is a lot of interesting prose in this book but it's not the erotica I was expecting. she's got interesting things to say and discuss but if you're looking for something to turn you on, this might not be it.
Nin in fine form...sort of.......2007-05-16
The great work of Anais Nin's life was her diary, and everything else she wrote, no matter how much energy and passion she invested in it, seemed distracted and a bit colorless. This erotica is no exception, and it also has the distinction of being composed to the tune of a tightrope act; Nin was required to deliver hardcore sex, but she could not help adding her own poetry to it. The conditions of composition are here important to whether or not you'll enjoy this semi-hardcore, semi-erotica writing.
If you're a Nin fan, however, this is a must-have.
One of the classics.......2007-03-30
This is one of the classics of sex and eroticism. As a teen, I stole my mother's copy and it inspired many a fantasy. The writing is wonderful and the sex is, well, just hot. I've ready many similar books since then, like right now I am reading Abby Lee's Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind. Reading about sex is always "stimulating" but this classic has lasted generations.
I expected something deeper.......2007-03-09
I guess I was expecting better writing from Nin. I have heard so many good things about her writing and I have read a few books by one of her "good friends", Henry Miller, that I decided to pick up Delta of Venus and was a bit disappointed. In the introduction Anais Nin describes the conditions under which she wrote much of what is contained in this book. Some wealthy "collector" had commissioned erotica at the rate of $1/page and he was not interested in anything but the physical act of sex. Well, Nin delivered. Much of the content is the description of various sexual situations and lacks what I would consider art. Reading Delta of Venus I felt like I was reading at more tasteful version of Letters to Penthouse. I must admit, this is my first exposure to Nin so I am not saying she is not a gifted author. I understand she was commissioned to write stories of this nature, I'm just saying I expected something more.

Book Description
Iconic erotic writer Anais Nin wrote of feminist artist Judy Chicago in the seventh volume of her Diaries, "Our first meeting was very interesting. I was intimidated by [Judy's] powerful personality. She was intimidated by the lady of the Diaries...But what happened is that we immediately felt a tenderness and recognized that we needed each other." From this encounter, a personal friendship and professional alliance flowered and continued to bloom until Nin's death in 1977. Nin, a feminist of the first wave, considered Chicago her "radical daughter." Where Nin was graceful, Chicago was confrontational. Where Nin was evocative, Chicago was provocative. Yet both sought the same goal: freedom for female self-expression, unfettered by the constraints of patriarchal posturing. Their relationship - a dialogue between the early and latter halves of the twentieth century - helped Chicago transcend her internalized taboos and fully express her creative power. As a tribute to the legacy of her mentor, Chicago shares some of her memories of their encounters in her introduction to Fragments From The Delta Of Venus, a collection of twenty artworks pairing Chicago's sensuous watercolor images with extremely evocative phrases from Nin's famed collection of stories. The book promises to be a breakthrough in the history of erotic art, which - for centuries - has belonged almost exclusively to male artists and a male audience. Fragments From The Delta Of Venus might be said to be a continuation of Chicago and Nin's earlier dialogue, illuminating, in both images and words, the powerful fantasies and desires of the female mind. Fragments From The Delta Of Venus will be released on Valentine's Day, 2004, perfectly timed to warm your lover's heart - and more.

Riveting Images of Female Desire.......2005-07-18
Fragments from The Delta of Venus is a collection of 20 watercolors by the famous feminist artist, Judy Chicago. The paintings were inspired by 20 fragments from the erotic short stories of Anais Nin published in the collection The Delta of Venus. These stories, written for a private collector of erotica in the 1940s, were published in 1974 at the height of both the Sexual and Feminist Revolutions.
Judy Chicago found short fragments, five to seven lines long, that she found "riveting" and they became the inspiration for these paintings that "articulate a feminine perspective on sex." The paintings depict genitalia and sexual activity, and use color and line to create an image of sexual excitement and passion.
Each painting is depicted on a page of its own, with the text from The Delta of Venus that inspired in on the facing page. These are preceded by a page that has the title of the story from which the text was taken. It is a very simple presentation with a list of the painting titles and the date of composition at the end of the book. The paintings were done over a three year period from 2001 - 2003.
At the beginning of the book are one page biographies of Anais Nin and Judy Chicago. These are followed by a nine page memoir of Anais Nin written by Judy Chicago that tells of their friendship and Nin's influence on her. It also goes into why she created this particular set of paintings.
This is a beautiful and erotic book. It is well-produced with a pink binding. PowerHouse Books has done a wonderful job of presenting these works.

Mr. Presley, you are a master at what you do. I have your triology--the Blackfunk series. Kudos to you. I love reading about erotic sex, crime, drama, and you even throw in a little politics in BF3. I can't wait to read Tears on a Sunday. Keep up the great work. You have a fan for life if you keep writing the way you do.

Blackfunk II: No Regrets / No Apologiesby Michael Presley.......2005-01-12
The book I am reviewing is Michael Presley's "Black Funk II: No Regrets, No Apologies." This book tells how people must fight to save their loved ones in the streets of New York City and how they have to struggle over their feelings of love. One of the main characters named Rashaun is a defense attorney, and he is fighting one of the biggest cases of his life. He is trying to keep his friend Tyrone from doing life in prison. I liked the book because it reminds me of something that happened in my life and other people as well. This book kept me reading and wanting more. I really enjoyed part two just as much as part one. I can't wait until I buy BlackFunk III. I recommend this book to people ages 15 and older. It is a really interesting and remarkable book. Thank you for reading my review.
Sex on a whole 'nother level.......2004-10-24
Rashaun Jones and Andria Jackson are at the epicenter of a major sex "shake down" in Michael Presley's "Black Funk II: No Regrets, No Apologies." They must fight to save their love as the cold hard streets of New York City provide a backdrop to their struggle over black love. Rashaun, a high powered defense attorney, is fighting one of the biggest cases of his career. He's also in the fight of his love life because his ex-girlfriend, Yvonne, is the prosecuting attorney in the major case and determined to win him back at all costs. Andria is trying her best to fight off a shady old lover, Paul, who is using every conceivable venue to gain back the love of the beautiful social worker. The whole idea and definition of "black funk" is something crucial to the storyline that the reader must discover for his or herself. Without giving away the plot, Rashaun is trying desperately to save his best friend from a long prison sentence for taking part in "black funk."
Presley does a good job of differentiating between the numerous characters that make up "Black Funk." The grammar errors were annoying at times, but Presley's socially conscious message at various points in the novel often overshadowed those glitches in the story, hence my rating. I would recommend this book to readers who love a good, dramatic story that will leave you wanting more.

GIVE ME A BREAK- DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!.......2006-09-15
Two separate readers at two separate book stores recommended this book to me so I backordered this book. I read an average of 2-3 books/week and was completely horrifed upon reading this book. It should be labeled the worst book by the Guiness Book of World Records. This book has too many unfinished story lines that are irrelevant and unconnected to what is supposed to be the main subject which is also under-developed. There are so many grammatical errors, incomplete sentence structures, and unfinshed thoughts that you literally have to play Sherlock Holmes to find out what the author really meant. You really don't discover what Blackfunk is until page 93-94, then the author jumps onto another subject by the next page. The concept of Blackfunk, which involves women engaging in rough sex to the point of death is LUDICROUS!! If women can give birth to 8Lb babies or bigger, than there is nothing a male counterpart can be endowed with that can cause any more damage than child birth. I am on page 150 (the book only has 188 pages) and nothing has happened yet. This book is so horrible I don't know where to start and obviously neither does the author. I bought the sequels to this book and I can't fathom finishing this one let alone opening the first page to the next novel. I will never follow up on another recommendation by another "alleged" reader because apparently the two readers aren't real readers. I am really disappointed in all the viewers who rated this book above 1 star - If I had my choice, I would have given this book ZERO STARS!!!
KEEPS YOU WANTING.......2005-10-23
I was extremely impressed with this book. Never heard of blackfunk... what an eye opener.!!! Excellent job!!
Good effort, but . . ........2004-11-17
I bought this book because my co-worker raved about it, and I thought the title was enticing. When I read the book however, I was disappointed because there were so many grammatical errors and typos it was disappointing (Did the writer have an editor read a copy before publishing?). In addition the concept of a woman dying from being(oversexed)for the lack of a more appropriate word, is mythological. I must give props to the author for even writing this book, as well as publishing it himself. If you don't mind reading a mediocre book, by all means buy this book, however, if you're looking for something substantial, with solid characters and plot that will hold your attention please look elsewhere.
This book is CRAP!!!.......2004-08-26
OK--I give any author credit for actually writing a book. But don't pass off your first draft as a piece of literature. Typos, spelling errors and grammatical mistakes are abundant. I can appreciate self-publishing but every word processing program comes with spell check. Use it!
The idea of Blackfunk as an aggressive sexual act designed to inflict excrutiating pain and tissue damage, to the point of death, is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. The whole concept is preposterous. I like Rashaun and Andria as two people finding each other, releasing their demons, and trying to build a life together amidst the backdrop of contemporary Black love. That's fine. Give me that story. Not this convoluted storyline based on the premise of destructive sex.
Finally, do not write a book with a BS ending, only to attach an equally poorly written excerpt of the sequel, to entice me to read the next book. Write a complete novel the first time.
Ummmph Blackfunk!.......2004-07-15
This was a good book, I wasn't sure if I would like it but I am glad I did decide to purchase it. I couldn't get enough of this book. I didn't understand what the title of the book ment, but now I do. Some people like blackfunk and some people don't. I think I would enjoy blackfunk, lol!

Book Description
A father must come to terms with his son's death in the war. In Venice an architecture student commits a crime of passion. A white southern airport loader tries to do a favor for a black northern child. The ordinary stuff of ordinary fiction--but with a difference! These tales take place twenty-five, fifty, a hundred-fifty years from now, when men and women have been given gills to labor under the sea. Huge repair stations patrol the cables carrying power to the ends of the earth. Telepathic and precocious children so passionately yearn to visit distant galaxies that they'll kill to go. Brilliantly crafted, beautifully written, these are Samuel Delany's award-winning stories, like no others before or since.
Book Description
• A collection of earth-centered meditations to enhance our connection to the natural world.
• Reveals the Old Wisdom of the Cherokee elders for living in harmony with all beings.
• Written by J. T. Garrett, of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, who was taught the ancient ways by his grandfather and other medicine men of his tribe.
In a time before ours, humans could talk with animals, hear whisperings from plant life, and understand the origin stories written in the stars. Survival depended on active kinship with family and tribe, with four-leggeds and plant people, with sun and moon and fire. The Cherokee, known widely as the Principal People or the First People, hold a deeply tapestried collection of stories about human interrelatedness with nature. Those stories, passed down through countless generations of Cherokee, are especially significant at this time in human history, when Mother Earth suffers under the weight of unchecked "progress."
As a boy, J. T. Garrett sat beside his grandfather and the other medicine men of his tribe as they chanted and drummed the stories of his ancestry. From those stories of Nu-Dah (the Sun), Grandmother Moon, Spring Rain, and Little Eagle comes this collection of active meditations for reconnecting with the natural intelligence that is our birthright. Recognizing that we are all kin in the Universal Circle of life opens us to communication with all beings, bringing us back to our natural spirit selves. If we listen carefully to the Cherokee stories of the Old Ways we can gain understanding of lost social and spiritual traditions that can help ensure a thriving future.

Meditations with the Cherokee: Prayers, Songs, and Stories of Healing and Harmony.......2005-08-23
inspiring, thoughtful, well written
Great meditations.......2003-11-04
This book weaves together stories - memories and experiences - of Cherokee ceremonies and conversations with elders. The stories tell the message (sometimes in a long about way but they get there) and then there are these mediation exercises that usually include sitting down out in nature, breathing fully and focusing on a certain image or word. Its neat. The stories are easy to read and the mediations are quite relaxing and centering. Lots of life lessons included here.
Good.......2003-08-08
Sometimes J.T. gets too lost in the story for me.
Harmony and Balance from a Cherokee Perspective.......2002-08-13
This is a wonderful and concise book which reveals the old wisdoms and teachings of the Cherokee. For most readers it will be a slightly different approach in learning to be in harmony with our modern world. The book teaches this harmony both with meditative exercises and with stories which carry the message - the teachings for our current and future generations. As mentioned in the introduction, "This book will take you on a journey of discovery about relationships." It is an excellent book and very much worth reading. It is the 3rd in a series of books by Dr. J. T. Garrett that teach us how to live in harmony and balance in this world. [His other books are Medicine of the Cherokee - The Way of Right Relationship and Walking on the Wind: Cherokee Teachings for Healing Through Harmony and Balance (written by his son, Professor Michael Garrett).]
Dr. Garrett does it again.......2002-04-17
Dr. Garrett continues to bridge ancient wisdom with modern practical ways of being , irregardless of ones cultural background this book provides simple meditations that can effect profound changes bringing harmony into ones life. You can read it over and over again gaining new insight with each reading. This book is a way of connecting us to what it means to be a human being on Mother Earth.
