Book Description
Penned in the same poetic voice introduced in her bestselling debut novel, Passing by Samaria, Sharon Ewell Foster's Ain't No River is a contemporary tale where the angst of modern life is seasoned with wisdom, humor, and a dash of African-American history. Meemaw has been a doting mother, grandmother, and church mother to her community. Suddenly she's become a slimmed-down, silver-haired, seventy-something fox with a new attitude. And all fingers are pointing at a much younger ex-pro football player, GoGo Walker. When D.C. lawyer Garvin Daniels -- Meemaw's granddaughter -- gets wind of what's happening, she heads back to her hometown determined to help her Meemaw get it together before she goes too far.

Finally a novel full of hope, faith and love........2002-08-08
I am truly thankful that a 'true' Christian and believer has found a way to write a book without compromising. Ms. Foster's writing is so relative I couldn't wait to finish so that I could purchase her other novels. Her characters are people you know and situations you've actually experienced. Finally literature you won't be ashamed of reading while riding on the train to work.
Praise God for Sharon Ewell Foster.......2002-04-05
I can not offer enough praise for this novel and the other. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I highly recommend this book to all my fellow Christians and any lovers of good literature.
ok.......2002-02-27
This is the story of Gavin, who goes back to her home town to make sure she is not being taking advantage of by GoGo, the young man her grandmother has sudden starting hanging out with. I didn't really care that much for the main characther, Gavin at first, she seemed stuck up, and shallow. What I liked about this book is the scriptures that were included.
Novel Presents Some Life Altering Lessons.......2002-02-16
If you were deeply moved by Sharon Ewell Foster's "Passing By Samaria," you will love her second novel, "Ain't No River." Foster's humourously entertaining novel introduces characters who are going through life altering experiences that ultimately lead to not only redemption but unexpected romance. This is truly a beautiful novel that tackles many topics such teenage pregnancy, religion, and relationships.
The main character, Garvin, is a successful African American lawyer. Life has been going well for the self-absorbed Garvin until she gets a difficult case that threatens her job security. While dealing with her job crisis, she discovers the one person she loves the most, her Mee Maw, seems to be heading towards serious trouble. A young, handsome ex-football player, Go-Go Walker, has captured her grandmother's (Mee Maw) heart. With her take charge attitude, Garvin travels back to her childhood home to save her grandmother from this "playa's" grasp.
During Garvin's visit, readers will meet a host of well-developed characters in this novel, each with his or her own painful troubles. Foster makes it extremely easy for the reader to relate to all the characters and feel their pain. The best parts of the novel is reading how characters come to the realization that they are missing an important piece in their puzzled lives...God. There are so many lessons (as well as some shedded tears) the reader will experience right along with these characters.

Book Description
Former New York Yankees great Mickey Rivers offers entertaining and humorous quotations, stories, and memories from his years with the wild "Bronx Zoo" Yankees teams of the '70s.
Customer Reviews:
Mick, a bit too quick.......2006-01-30
This book by Mickey Rivers is truly unique. It reads more like a loosely connected bunch of stories somewhat covering his life and career. Mickey breaks the rules of proper grammar in favor of telling a story in his own words.
The book is interesting, but lacking in any real depth. You can probably read it quickly in one setting, but I would rather have a meatier book from one of the true characters of the game, a man who spent time on one of the craziest and greatest baseball teams ever.
Fun, but..........2004-04-16
In a sense, this book IS Mickey Rivers - humorous, irreverent, oddly distracted, and in a sense somewhat disassociated from the reality that the rest of us live in. On the surface, the book is little more than a collection of mildly to moderately humorous stories: other than (arguably) Billy Martin, Rivers does little to expose facets of the people he discusses that we aren't already well aware of.
Yet in the telling of the stories Mickey does expose much of his inner self to the reader, and in so doing he more or less validates the title of the book. Apparently, Mickey truly didn't believe in worryin' about anything: his marriage, taking care of himself physically, what others thought of his various and sundry antics. Having said all of that, though, Rivers does come off as quite likable - he may have more or less unconsciously made his way through his career, but at least he did so with a smile on his face and a desire to do the best he could with those talents that he could readily muster.
In the end, I gave this book three stars because one doesn't get the feeling that Rivers put much thought into it, but what the heck... if the book was full of deep self-contemplation, it wouldn't be Mickey, would it?
fun look back from one of the game's true "characters".......2003-12-07
A great book for Yanks fans as well as other baseball fans, and a great trip down memory lane for those of us who remember and treasure the late 70s Yanks and Sox.
I bought this because Mick's odd yet wise quotes were legendary during his playing career, kind of a next-generation Yogi Berra. (A nice touch in the book is that it includes many of these quotes in his own handwriting.) Mick recalls his baseball life with humor and a deep sensitivity, especially for those teammates who are gone -- Thurman Munson, Billy Martin, Catfish Hunter, Jim SPencer, etc. For example, he recounts his post-game activities playing ball with kids around the stadium and racing them down the street, and talks about the importance that today's players - Jeter, Williams, etc. - be role models for children.
A quick read that will bring you back to the Bronx Zoo. (Particularly enjoyed the story about how Mick's wife played bumper cars w/ his Benz and Cadillac in the Yankee Stadium parking lot - bet The Boss loved cleaning up...)
Disappointing.......2003-11-29
I had hoped this book would be a lot more of a biography. Instead it was written as if the reader was a 10 year old. Not informative and a waste of money.
A Great Read.......2003-09-10
I purchased this book at the Yogi Berra museum in Montclair, NJ during a book signing by Mickey Rivers himself. I always liked him, and knew about his witty quotes, however, I never realized what a genuinely nice person he was. At the book signing, he talked to me for more than 5 minutes. The fact he's a nice person comes across loud and clear in the book as well. He tells tales of his childhood, the minor leagues, the Angels, Yankees, Rangers, and other experiences. The book is written in a conversational style, as if Mickey is talking right to you. You get a feel for the man, and you get to hear good stories as well. As you read, you'll laugh and come to like Mickey more and more. For me, I started to long for the days of my youth when the Yankees Bronx Zoo team battled with the Boston Red Sox, the KC Royals and the LA Dodgers. All in all, this book is a thoroughly enjoyable read. If you enjoy humorous baseball stories in an easy-to-read format, I highly recommend Ain't No Sense Worryin'.

Book Description
When two friends are found in a compromising situation, their marriage of convenience turns into something neither was looking for ... and something neither can live without.
Nicholas Parrish wakes one morning to pounding at the front door of his London townhouse. Standing before him is the irate father of Prudence Armitage and several of her scowling brothers. Awesome..........2007-04-30
I love this so much. I have read it twice already. This is the first book that I have read that I can really relate to the character Pru. I am so like her. If I was back in that day an age I would so be Pru. I am very shy (a wallflower), clumsy, easily blush, easily emberrassed, and everything else like Pru. Except I can't play the piano if my life depended on it. And Nicholas is great, I love his charater so much. Except his stubborness about her money is nice (especially in that time when women were nothing but a property), but i think that it kind well got annoying. But in the end he sees his mistakes in it and fixes it. I love this it is a book I can never get tired of reading.
Sweet Romance.......2006-10-20
"Once A Gentleman" is a sweet regency romance. It is not the kind of book that will stay with you for long time after reading it, but nevertheless; you won't be able to put it down. The hero and the heroine are very sweet and romantic. I strongly recommend this read for any one who wants to enjoy a nice regency romance, without getting to emotionally involve in the plot. If you enjoy reading books that are filled with sexual tension and explicit nudity you can skip this one.
A Lovely Romantic Read.......2005-01-18
For all the years Prudence Armitage had worked for Nicholas and his sister at "The Ladies Fashionable Cabinet", he'd never really gotten to know, the shy mousy looking young woman who diligently worked by their sides. Rather he took her for granted, almost like a second sister. Now that his sister had left for an extended honeymoon, Prudence assumed Edwina's editorial duties. Late one evening Nicholas casually mentioned that she was working too hard, putting in too many hours, and assured that she was leaving soon he continued out the door for a night of entertainment. However, the next morning when he was rudely awakened by an enraged father and a horde of `viking-like giants' demanding satisfaction for ruining his daughter and their sister who had never arrived home the night before - Nicholas realized they were speaking of Pru who'd fallen asleep at her desk! Being a true gentleman, he would of course, do the right thing and offer her marriage though it was the furthest thing from his mind with Prudence being the least likely of candidates.
Prudence, was horrified - having been in love with Nicholas since the very first day she'd met him. Yet, married they'd be - the very next day!
With the help of Flora, a retired demimonde and `fashion editor' of the paper, and the Crimson ladies, Prudence, began to reveal qualities that gave Nicholas food for thought. Soon Nicholas was regretting his plans for an`in-name-only'marriage, and was formulating plans to make Pru his wife in all ways.
*** This was a delightful finale to the charming Ladies Fashionable Cabinet trilogy featuring, Nicolas and Prudence. Uniquely stand-alone this was a look at a marriage forced upon two individuals who in appearance were as different as night and day. Nicolas, the too handsome for his own good, charming, outgoing personality while Pru the complete opposite - small in stature, embarrassingly shy, and relatively content to blend into the background while letting others shine. What was unique was that she didn't turn into a swan overnight, rather making the most of her other attributes. While Nicholas did fall in love/lust with her, it was more for the beautiful person he saw, while her looks, which truly were never that bad once she removed all the accoutrements she used to hide them, revealed a more subtle beauty. The humor was charming as Pru tried to put into practice the lessons of flirting and seduction received from Flora and the Crimson ladies - suffice it to say, Pru didn't turn into a seductress. What was really important though, was how Pru came to realize that as `perfect' as she thought Nicholas was, she finally discovered he wasn't and she had gained enough confidence to give him a wake up call when she pointed it out to him. This was truly a divine read, a slow, yet very moving and truly romantic experience. --- Marilyn, for www.romancedesigns.com
Just didn't do it for me........2005-01-13
This was my first by Candice Hern, and regretably I was disappointed. I have read all of Nicole Jordan, Lisa Kleypas, Gaelen Foley, Sabrina Jeffries, and many more. This book didn't have any sexual tension to speak of. The hero was a sweet idiot and the heroine was a plain dowd. Not enough chemistry for me and quite frankly, not enough romance.
Another great one from Hern.......2004-08-04
Candice Hern write such great books! You always take the characters seriously, even as you laugh and sympathize with them. Her heros are hot but not fantasy-types and her heroines are always plucky without being embarrassing or reckless. I found Prudence very touching, since I've been in similar situations before -- longing from afar. :) I highly recommend this story.

Product Description
Nicholas Parrish had no intentions of taking a bride, and certainly not someone like Prudence. Of course she's charming, pleasant, and a diligent employee of The Ladies' Fashionable Cabinet, the magazine Nicholas and his sister run from his home. Prudence may even be considered pretty, when you look past the mousy hair and dreadful glasses. But when she falls asleep at her desk and remains in his town house all night, her irate father demands satisfaction. And being a true gentleman, Nicholas agrees to do the proper thing. Though marrying Prudence never crossed his mind before, he has to admit there is an intriguing and desirable side to her he's only just beginning to see. But Nicholas may need to reconsider his plans for a marriage "in-name-only" especially now that Pru has decided to make herself totally irresistible.

Book Description
Carried to the Americas by slaves, the 8,000-year-old philosophy of Ifa originated with the Yoruba peoples of West Africa. Ifa's enduring message of strength and inner peace, one that offers a way to harmonize our spiritual and worldly aims, is enjoying a resurgence of popularity in the West.
Written by an avid student and accomplished practitioner, The Way of the Orisa provides an exhilarating introduction to the orisa, the powerful messenger spirits who act as our personal guardians. Through fables, rituals, prayers and simple guidelines, Philip Neimark shows how we can further our personal and professional goals by cultivating the loving support of orisa energy.
Joyous, wise and eminently practical, The Way of the Orisa brings a vibrant ancient tradition to contemporary life.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-09-04
This is an excellent and informative book that provides accurate and important information to anyone interested in studying Ifa. I highly recommend it.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!.......2006-02-22
If you are new to Orisa worship, the are much better places to start. I apologize for being so harsh, but I truly feel that this book is dangerous! It is just another token in the ongoing caucasian attempt to rewrite, revamp and europeanize everything African.
For the record, Baba Obatala has never been, and will never be, a caucasian man. He is the chief of white, meaning he is pure of essence and spirit. He is the embodiment of purity, healing, peace and calm.
For the sake of your spirit, keep your worship as pure as possible. This culture is not based on mail-order initiations and online godparents. Mr. Neimark is capitalizing on people's spiritual emptiness and lack of guidance. I pray for those who follow him.
Sorry, no cigar.......2005-06-30
How much you enjoy this book will hindge on how you view the efforts of White people to "de-africanize" Traditional African Religion. Many of us that have lived the Yoruba/Orisa'Ifa lifestyle are very uncomfortable with his blatant attempt to misled people into believing that any part of the Yoruba pantheon are white or european. In this way, I am speaking about his description of Obatala. This is beyond irresponsible, its malicious. But I suppose its no more malicious than trying to make outsiders believe he has the leader of a nonexisting "American Ifa" movement that seems to inch further and further away from tradition each day.
He also attempts to make a definitive statement about the relationship of Yemoja and Olokun, choosing to use Nigerian name dropping to purposefully deceive people into believing that these two Spiritual Entities are one in the same, when they are not and never have been. Why he does this, I am not sure. Why he makes the case that you cannot work with one without the other I have no idea. But misusing the names of others to validate he inaccurate information and continuing to publish it rather than make adjustments to future printings even now that the Orisa have asked for the language to be changed is disrespectful and amoral.
So, again how and if you enjoy this book will depend largely upon how important you believe it is that westerners stop exploiting, redesigning and strongarming indigenous people and their culture. This is nothing more than a continuation of the acts that escalated into the Transatlantic Slave Trade and later Jim Crow. Its oppressive.
This makes it easy to forget about the books brief moments of clarity and just beeline it to a more accurate book with no racist leanings.
Unfortunate.......2004-07-16
This book does contain much information. However, it does not go into the differences or the interdependence of Ifa and Ocha.
Not worthy of print!.......2004-05-24
This book should be burned....was my intial reaction reading it. To this day I don't know what happen to it. Reading it made me very angry!
