4 out of 5 stars Fantastic first work by someone I will miss........2007-09-30

Although "Your Blues Ain't Like Mine" is not a story to pick your spirits up, it is most definitely a worthwhile read. Bebe Moore Campbell knew human nature, which in itself is a reason you'll be satisfied with the work, her first. Her perception of character is pleasing. She deals with the dregs people experience, as well as the joys. She really gets into people's psychological problems, the blues, whether the one enduring them is black or white. Most excellent. She died too soon, within this past year. I will have to read her other works as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2007-08-05

The sign of a great book is that so consumes you that you dare not put the book down, and can genrate a wealth of emotions, from despair to hope, to joy. This novel is a case in point. It's been years since I picked this up, but even now I can remember and recall this novel most vivid parts. Racism and a sense of justice are two of the themes covered in this novel, and I am surprised this hasn't been adapted into a motion picture. Lastly I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs Moore Campbell not long after this was releashed, for a book reading of this novel, and was fortunate to get a sense of what she wanted to achieve with this novel, as well as a signed copy. If you like this, you may also like Brothers and Sisters

As with all of the books I've purchased by this writer, this book was superbly written. The story was able to capture and keep your attention from beginning to end. An excellent read. I would love to see more by this writer.

5 out of 5 stars Your Blues Ain't Like Mine.......2006-07-28

This is one of the best books I've ever read, and I've read hundreds of books. BMC did an excellent job travelling from the 1950's to the 1990's and from the stagnated deep south to the steadily progressing north. It was so detailed it was like this was her autobiography.

Book Description

Chicken--both the bird and the food--has played multiple roles in the lives of African American women from the slavery era to the present. It has provided food and a source of income for their families, shaped a distinctive culture, and helped women define and exert themselves in racist and hostile environments. Psyche A. Williams-Forson examines the complexity of black women's legacies using food as a form of cultural work. While acknowledging the negative interpretations of black culture associated with chicken imagery, Williams-Forson focuses her analysis on the ways black women have forged their own self-definitions and relationships to the "gospel bird."

Exploring material ranging from personal interviews to the comedy of Chris Rock, from commercial advertisements to the art of Kara Walker, and from cookbooks to literature, Williams-Forson considers how black women arrive at degrees of self-definition and self-reliance using certain foods. She demonstrates how they defy conventional representations of blackness in relationship to these foods and exercise influence through food preparation and distribution. Understanding these phenomena clarifies how present interpretations of blacks and chicken are rooted in a past that is fraught with both racism and agency. The traditions and practices of feminism, Williams-Forson argues, are inherent in the foods women prepare and serve.

5 out of 5 stars An original and grounbreaking study.......2007-08-21

I am truly surprised that nobody else has submitted a review of this book! It certainly deserves to be widely read as an original contribution to African-American studies, to food studies in general, to cultural studies, and most importantly, by anyone who wants to understand how sterotyping works as part of the process of oppression. I also learned a great deal about what 'signifying' means, and how it can be used as an analytical tool.

This is not a perfect book. Sometimes I found it moved to quickly from the general to the specific and vice versa. But Williams-Forson has taken a really tough topic - the way Chicken has been attached to African American women, and she treats it with sensitivity, creativity, wit and an eclectic set of tools from literature, social science and history. In the process she gets to the heart of how stereotypes cut in a lot of different directions; they reveal weaknesses and strengths, solidarities and divisions. She is not interested in passive victimology, nor does she ignore the violence and pain of slavery and prejudice.

The result is a book which really does teach you something new about the Black experience. It is the opening, I hope, of a new generation of black history which shakes off some of the old narratives which have served their purposes, and gets into really complex terrain. I look forward to more complex counterpoint with the work being done in the Caribbean and on the Black experience elsewhere in the Americas. I will certainly be using this book in the classroom, and I hope it gets the broader readership it deserves!

    Product Description

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A978913. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Langston Hughes, Gloria Naylor, and Bebe Moore Campbell use the blues in their poetry and fiction to highlight the relationship between the individual and the community; however, African culture and American slavery influenced the development of the personal and group dynamics of the blues long before a blues literary tradition emerged. This chapter on slave songs, the precursors to today's blues, focuses on the emergence of the blues with an emphasis on the individual and community. The relationship between a single slave and the slave community influences the blues musical and literary traditions, reflecting both the individual and community. An understanding of the individual, the community, and the interaction between the two in slave songs is a prerequisite for a valid analysis of Langston Hughes's Selected Poetry of Langston Hughes, Gloria Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place, and Bebe Moore Campbell's Your Blues Ain't Like Mine.

                    Book Description

The Awakening shocked turn-of-the-century readers and reviewers with its treatment of sex and suicide.  In a departure from literary convention, Kate Chopin failed to condemn her heroine's desire for an affair with the son of a Louisiana resort owner, whom she meets on vacation.  The power of sensuality, the delusion of ecstatic love, and the solitude that accompanies the trappings of middle- and upper-class convention are themes of this now-classic novel.

The book was influenced by French writers ranging from Flaubert to Maupassant, and can be seen as a precursor of the impressionistic, mood-driven novels of Virginia Woolf and Djuna Barnes.  Variously called "vulgar," "unhealthily introspective," and "morbid," the book was neglected for several decades, not least because it was written by a "regional" woman writer.  This edition also includes selected stories from Kate Chopin's Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie, and an introduction and notes by Nina Baym.

5 out of 5 stars Supremely important rediscovery.......2004-06-25

The author, Kate Chopin, began to write when she was age thirty six. She had a ten year productive career the introduction by Nina Baym discloses. She died at age fifty three. Her work went out of print to be revived in the early 1960's. She wrote two novels and close to one hundred stories following the death of her husband and her mother.

Women, including Kate Chopin, writing after the Civil War turned to regionalism. By 1893 railroads had wrought a tremendous change. Regional writing, as the introduction points out, is tourism of the imagination. The stories are short and skilfully done. Even the use of dialect for the Cajun and Creole speakers is not off-putting. The stories have a wonderful stripped down to the essence quality. One is reminded of Chekhov.

In THE AWAKENING it is noted that the summer colony staying at the Lebrun cottages are almost entirely Creole. An exception is Edna Pontellier. She came from old Presbyterian Kentucky stock. Even as a child Edna tended to live in her own world. She feels a sense a of exaltation when she learns to swim. She has children, a husband, and becomes infatuated with a young friend, Robert Lebrun. Later Robert leaves to go to Mexico. Returning to New Orleans, Edna spends time with the people she has met at Grand Isles. Her husband is caught up in his household furnishings. When she decides to leave to live by herself in a smaller house, he prudently closes their large marital house to avoid gossip. Her absolute disregard for her duties as a wife shocks her husband. Her doctor can find no trace of the morbid condition ascribed to her. Robert Lebrun returns. He shows reserve. Leonce her husband and her children are part of Edna's life. She yields to the water of the gulf.

Kate Chopin was a writer of major achievement. One regrets, as outlined in the introduction, that there were no literary works produced by her in the last five years of her life. She was discouraged by the critical and moralistic response to her masterpiece, THE AWAKENING.

                    5 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking.......2001-02-20

In "The Awakening", a woman rejects the drudgery of her life and decides to live selfishly, for once. Kate Chopin captivates her readers with a story of transformation and growth, and writes with clarity and ease. Perhaps most enjoyable about "The Awakening" and Kate Chopin's short stories is the vivid New Orleans setting. Chopin pays attention to the charms of Louisiana in this novel--Creole cooking and language, Southern black and French mannerisms of the time--not limiting herself by focusing on members of the elite. Definitely worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars The quintessential edition of an essential work........1998-07-29

Like far too many, I was first introduced to Chopin in college. As an educator, I find Chopin's work to be timeless. Chopin speaks to contemporay society--and especially American society--in ways that few authors can and do. I use "The Awakening," as one of the cornerstones (yes; one may have more than one cornerstone) of my literature class--a class that relies on trade publications rather than anthologies and "typical" textbooks for reading material. One of the unexpected rewards I have experienced while teaching this novel is that male students, generally speaking, truly enjoy the work. Given its content and storyline, one might expect the opposite to be true. Nonetheless, the novel speaks to readers of all ages and genders. I believe that virtually ANYONE will identify with the characters Chopin brings to life in "The Awakening." Not only is it the story of a woman in search of her identity--arguably, a rather Maslowian tale of ! "self-actualization"--it is the story of the human condition.

Additionally, given the story of Chopin's life, the book takes on even greater significance (sorry, but you'll have to read the book to understand why I feel this to be so).

This book is a MUST read for all who seek to dispell the myth of "June Cleaver." (Ya, I know I am not suposed to say that but this is one VERY cool book--a book that EVERYONE should read.)

Besides, "The Awakening" itself is short enough and compelling enough that one will finish it in a matter of a few evenings. That the Penguin version also contains Chopin's EXCELLENT short stories, and a good deal of equally excellent biographical and critical writing regarding the author and her works makes grabbing a copy for one's personal library a must-do.

Jackson.  From the desperate flight of a civilian mail courier carrying vital Rebel intelligence through an Imperial blockade, to a suicidal commando raid on an impregnable Imperial prison, to a Corellian smuggler mysteriously hired by an actor turned Jedi Knight turned Imperial assassin for one final transformation, these tales capture all the high adventure, imaginative genius, and nonstop action that are the hallmarks of the Star Wars saga.

What's more, the centerpiece of this magnificent collection is the short novel Side Trip, the first-ever collaboration between Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole, in which a freighter smuggling arms for the Rebels is commandeered by an Imperial Star Destroyer led by a mysterious helmeted figure who claims to be the notorious bounty hunter Jodo Kast.  It is all part of a devious plan that includes Hal and Corran Horn, who are working undercover to nail the infamous Corellian warlord Zekka Thyne. But one slip-up can get them all killed.

Collected for the first time, Star Wars(r): Tales from the Empire is one book no fan will want to be without.

3 out of 5 stars Mix of good and bad stories not particularly connected to the Empire.......2007-07-18

Unlike the short story collections centered around the Mos Eisley Cantina, Episode V's bounty hunters, and Jabba's Palace, Tales from the Empire does not present content written specifically for a book. Rather, these stories are compiled from the Star Wars Adventure Journal, a periodical published in the 1990's by RPG licensee West End Games. For the most part, the authors are not from the usual gang of Bantam Spectra suspects, with the exceptions of Timothy Zahn, Kathy Tyers, and Michael Stackpole. When the Star Wars Adventure Journal began publication, they wanted a New York Times-bestselling author for the launch issue. Zahn had already completed the outstandingly successful Thrawn Trilogy and had no plans to write more in the Expanded Universe. Happily, the magazine's editor persuaded him to offer up some fresh content exclusive to the journal. Conversely, Stackpole's X-wing: Rogue Squadron had yet to be published, so his short story contribution acted as a preview for the novel to come.

Zahn's solo contribution "First Contact" tells us of how the former Emperor's Hand Mara Jade came to be in the service of rogue Talon Karrde. Talon is a well-written character and it's enjoyable to see him on one of his earlier adventures. Mara doesn't come into the story much but as always, Zahn provides an intriguing plotline, even in the brief length of this tale.

Stackpole's tale "Missed Chance" introduces former CorSec officer Corran Horn and his faithful astromech Whistler. Corran is stranded on the planet Garqi and is spearheading a scheme to simultaneously get away and damage the local representatives of the Empire. Tyers continues the saga of her character Tynian, introduced in Tales of the Bounty Hunters, with an origin story detailing the circumstances that led her to her life as a gun-for-hire and rogue.

The final story of the novel is an interesting collaboration between Stackpole and Zahn. Titled "Side Trip," the story is split into four parts (two for each author) and it more of a novella than a short story. Fan favorite Grand Admiral Thrawn is featured, along with Corran Horn once again. The labyrinthine plot has Zahn's stamp all over, and the twists and turns are good fun.

The other authors have a wide range of backgrounds and the quality of the stories is equally varied. Two that stood out are Laurie Burns' "Retreat from Coruscant" and "Do No Harm" by Erin Endom. Burns places her story right before the Empire's re-taking of Coruscant (the starting point of the famous Dark Horse comic saga Dark Empire). It involves two mail couriers swept up in the action as the New Republic attempts to evacuate the planet and move their operations to a new base. This time period would be fertile ground for a future novel. Endom's story is a first-person perspective of a medic sent along on a Rebel strike mission and learning of the horrors of warfare first-hand.

The other tales are largely solid and well-written. One which didn't hold up so well is Patricia Jackson's "The Final Exit," a story of a Dark Jedi's past which suffers from being severely over-written and a bit pretentious. It's OK to use the word "said" once in a while when a character speaks! In this story, everyone whispers, chuckles, grins, replies, demands, spits, blurts - there are so many descriptions it became a distraction to me. Using more neutral language allows the reader to interject some of their own interpretation of mood and tone, which makes for a more compelling reading experience.

Tales from the Empire is a solid if not particularly vital piece of the Expanded Universe; recommended for someone looking for a change of pace from the usual characters or someone wanting to learn more about Zahn and Stackpole's key characters.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent stores, misleading title and cover.......2005-07-22

Tales From The Empire (1997.) A collection of Star Wars short stories by various authors.

                    INTRODUCTION:
The Star Wars film series is, without question, the greatest science fiction series of all time. George Lucas captured the minds of people young and old across the world. But as anyone knows, there are only a limited number of films, and for many people, this just wasn't enough. And thus, the Star Wars Expanded Universe was born. The Expanded Universe consisted of comic books, video games, novels, and other media. Many of the stories focused on the characters in the films, many focused on unknown characters from the same universe. A plethora of different authors wrote Star Wars stories, many of whom wrote for the Star Wars Adventure Journal - a now-out of print publication which featured Star Wars stories. And at long last, many of these stories have been compiled and collaborated into a single collection. Read on for my review of Tales From The Empire.

                    STORYLINE:
Essentially, this is a collection of stories written for the Star Wars Adventure Journal. Among the authors of these stories are the well-known Star Wars Expanded Universe novelists, like Kathy Tyers, Timothy Zahn, and Michael A. Stackpole. Stackpole and Zahn even collaborate on a four-part extended-length short story! Stackpole also serves up a prequel to his legendary X-Wing series. In addition to all this, there are also a lot of new authors to the Star Wars Expanded Universe. While most of the stories focus on new characters, a few of them have brief appearances by old favorites. The stories cover a wide arc of time, and unlike previous Tales Of/Tales From collections, this one doesn't have stores that overlap and take place in the exact same time frame.

                    OPINIONS:
The first thing I need to say is that, while I DO enjoy this book very much, the cover art is the most misleading cover art ever given to a Star Wars novel. Boba Fett and the Slave One DO NOT APPEAR ONE TIME IN THIS ENTIRE ANTHOLOGY. Someone should have taken the time to put together a more accurate cover! Likewise, it's called Tales From The Empire, but many of these stories have nothing to do with the Empire, outside of the Empire being mentioned maybe once or twice in the whole story. One good thing the book has going for it to make up for the misleading is the lengthy introduction. There is an introduction that both serves as a history of writing in the Expanded Universe, and as a brief introduction to the stories. That stuff aside, these stories are very good. Like the previous Star Wars Tales Of/Tales From stories, these ones have their hit and miss moments. However, as a whole, this book bests the Mos Eisley Cantina and Jabba's Palace collections. The stories explore a huge timeframe, ranging from the classic Star Wars Trilogy right into the days of the New Republic. The collaboration between Zahn and Stackpole makes for an interesting read, as does pretty much everything this book serves up. I wish the stories would have made it a little more clear when they take place, but other than that, my complaints are minimal. And with the Star Wars Adventure Journal discontinued, this is the only way to experience many of these stories. No Star Wars fan should be without this book.

                    OVERALL:
Overall, this is a solid collection, and definitely one of the better Tales Of/Tales From Star Wars collections out there. If you're a fan of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, I think it goes without saying - Tales From The Empire will make a fine addition to your Star Wars library.

4 out of 5 stars The adventures continue in this fine Star Wars anthology...........2004-02-11

Even though George Lucas' six-film Star Wars saga focuses intensely on a relatively small group of characters (the Skywalker family and the various Jedi and Sith Lords that tied their personal destiny to that of the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire), its setting ("a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....") was, and still is, a very huge canvas onto which many other stories can be easily included. Many fans, either by playing with their action figures as children or by writing fan fiction, created their own personal additions to the Star Wars universe and, at least in their own imagination, took part in the noble struggle between good and evil that's one of the building blocks of this modern day mythology.

Eventually, as Peter Schweighofer, editor of Tales From the Empire, writes in his introduction to this 1997 anthology of short stories, the action figures were put away and the fan fiction stories stashed away in drawers or file cabinets, but the fans' appetite for new Star Wars stories -- on film and on the printed page -- never really went away. And with the 1991 publication of Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire, the fans received a cornucopia of "further adventures" featuring not only the beloved heroes from the movies but a whole new cast of allies and adversaries.

Tales From the Empire is a collection of nine short stories that first appeared in West End Games' Star Wars Adventure Journal, plus a short novel (Side Trip) co-written by two of the best writers of Star Wars fiction, Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole. Most of these brief excursions into Lucas' galaxy are set during the time of the Galactic Civil War and/or the first few years of the post-Endor New Republic era, with entirely original characters -- Darth Vader makes a cameo in the Zahn/Stackpole novel and events that took place in the films (the Death Star's destruction at Yavin) are mentioned in passing -- that inhabit the millions of star systems in the strife-torn vastness of space.

Although the stories by Kathy Tyers (The Truce at Bakura), Stackpole (the X-Wing series creator), and Zahn are as well-written as their published Star Wars novels, credit must also be given to lesser known writers as Tony Russo, Laurie Burns, and Angela Phillips, whose tale of a young hacker ("slicer" in Star Wars terminology) who joins the Rebellion in the face of her parents' opposition ("Slaying Dragons") is among the best pieces of short fiction I have read in a while.

                    5 out of 5 stars So that's why they're the dark side..........2003-06-03

This has about 10 stories in it, the last being of 4 parts, written by both master authors, Timothy Zahn(my personal favorite) and Michael A. Stackpole, a great author in his own right. This last tale takes up about 100 pages and is really good. In fact, Many of these tales are quite good. One is about a medic assisting a recue team at an Imperial prison, one describes how Mara Jade came into Talon Karrde's service, and the others are good too. I highly recommend this collection of tales.

                    4 out of 5 stars Star Wars.......2003-01-15

This is one of those collection of Star Wars short stories that mentions the main characters (Luke, Han, Leia, etc.) really only briefly, if at all. This book fills in some of the gaps in the stories of some of the less known characters. It is an interesting read though.

4 out of 5 stars Textbook for different needs within Christian Education.......2000-12-22

This is a non-fiction how-to book on Christian Education.

It's probably not going to be a classic, but it is very good book if you are interested in thinking about all different needs and different spheres of education -- that is curriculum, environment, and so on.

The book has 25 chapters, each given to one special theme. Some of the chapters address psychology, special education, home schooling, Christian schools, mission education, Christian education in the church and in the home, and some other topics.

It's a good book to read through and then put on your shelf for reference, pull it out when you need it. (Not the type of book that you want to read over a number of times!) It's also very practical in a number of ways, suggesting how to approach the issue of Christian Education. You'd benefit most from this book if you were a Christian Educator (teacher, administrator, principal, on the board of directors for a school, teacher of Sunday school, homeschool), on a committee for Christian Education, or you were a pastor or seminarian.
