Who does she think she is?.......2007-01-12
This book was OK. She started off good and then I don't know what happen. It got kinda slow, but it was good.
Enjoyable Distraction.......2006-08-22
I must admit, Benilde let me down just a little with this book. I absolutely loved her first two books, and enjoyed her last book, but - and I can't quite put my finger on it - something just wasn't connecting for me with this one. Maybe it was the shock of my beloved Miles actually falling for, and committing to someone, or maybe it was Aisha, who I didn't really care for through much of the book (she was a little TOO much for me). The book did its job, which was to keep me distracted during my son's first weekend away at college, but it didn't draw me in the way her books usually do.
If you haven't read anything else by Benilde Little, don't make this your first selection (try Good Hair instead). She is one of my faves, but this just wasn't one of my favorite books.
Who Does She Think She Is.......2006-07-28
I love Benilde Little books, but this one was a disappointment. Kind of like she had to make some quota with the book publishers and just gave them something she was working on. If you wanna do some good Benilde Little reading, read "THE ITCH."
Quite astonishing!.......2005-11-18
Perhaps I'm just getting old and have absolutely no comprehension of the 20-something-year old women of today. I find it absolute madness that a young woman would trade in a wealthy, attentive man who adored her just the way she was, for a "pumpkin and zebra colored linens, raspberry Gerber daisies and coconut cupcakes" person. Personally, I believe that someone slipped the sistah a micky at her engagement party. Unbelieveable!!!
Nevertheless, this was a fun read.
A Tidy Fairy Tale.......2005-11-16
I must admit, in the beginning of this story, I didn't like the main character (Aisha) for obvious reasons. I suppose that's what makes the author a good writer. But as things unfolded, I had to give Aisha props for knowing what she didn't want & going after what she did want (money being no replacement for happiness). It was nice to see the mother (Camille) find her inner beauty thru developing a loving relationship with her deceased ex's 'hippie' mother (Abby); and finally it was nice for grandmother (Geneva) to finally loosen up & give everyone a break. The fairy tale came together in a neat package by the end of the book that left a smile on my face being the hopeless romantic that I am!

Book Description
Cub reporter Jancy Dewhurst has a plan for her life. One more year working for the Clarion, and she can leave behind the university town of Bishop, Oklahoma to land her dream job as an overseas wire correspondent. Then her first homicide scene sets her on the trail of a serial killer and throws her together with Agent Jim Wills - a natty state cop with an attitude to match his good looks, who has no use for "meddling" reporters. The murderer leaves a peculiar signature on each male victim - a baby-blue ribbon around an intimate body part. As the investigation continues, Jancy and Jim's mutual attraction grows despite their efforts to deny it. With the death of a close friend, the case gets personal . . . and the evidence points toward the sheriff's office. As Jancy and Jim's plot to trap their quarry, the killer lays plans that may claim them both . . .
Sharon Ervin is married, lives in McAlester, Oklahoma, and has four grown children.

fine police procedural .......2006-04-14
Twenty-three year old reporter Jancy Dewhurst plans to work one more year at the Clarion in Bishop, Oklahoma before joining her mentor as an overseas correspondent. Meanwhile she learns of a homicide in which the corpse was mutilated and a rubber band cut off circulation to the victim's penis. Sheriff Dudley Roundtree allows her to come to the crime scene where Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation Agent Jim Wills runs the inquiry. The victim is Pakistani student Charles Benuda.
Not long afterward a second body is found with the same gift wrapping, but the campus police moved the corpse before the investigators arrived. The deceased is Francis Speir, who apparently was a friend of Charles. Thoughts of hate crimes against homosexuals end when the third death is womanizing state Senator Richard Crook. Though he prefers Jancy to stay out of the case because she distracts him, Jim needs her insider knowledge especially when a mutual friend is killed next by a serial killer.
Jancy's youthful energy compares nicely against the professionals Dudley and Jim as the trio works on stopping a serial killer whose ribbon killing will haunt the audience (especially males) long after finishing the thriller. The sleuthing is first rate as Jim leads the inquiries with the help of the sheriff and the unwanted assistance of Jancy. The attraction between the two Js augments a fine police procedural though the motive when finally revealed seems off kilter.

Seeing is Believing.......2006-03-18
I just finished The Ribbon Murders, and I am still disturbed. The author puts you in the story, even when you would rather be at a safe distance. This book is excellent, it is driven by realistic characters, not impossible coincidences or process.
*****A great read from start to finish*****

Book Description
From master storyteller Clive Barker comes an epic tale of myth, magic, and forbidden passion—complete with new illustrations and a new Appendix.
Imajica is an epic beyond compare: vast in conception, obsessively detailed in execution, and apocalyptic in its resolution. At its heart lies the sensualist and master art forger, Gentle, whose life unravels when he encounters Judith Odell, whose power to influence the destinies of men is vaster than she knows, and Pie 'oh' pah, an alien assassin who comes from a hidden dimension.
That dimension is one of five in the great system called Imajica. They are worlds that are utterly unlike our own, but are ruled, peopled, and haunted by species whose lives are intricately connected with ours. As Gentle, Judith, and Pie 'oh' pah travel the Imajica, they uncover a trail of crimes and intimate betrayals, leading them to a revelation so startling that it changes reality forever.

830 pages of nothing.......2007-08-07
I like Clive Barker even though he veers from great to great stinker. The Imajica characters act in unimaginable ways. They seem driven by an unrealistic soul that is impractical and childish. The plot is driven by the characters' need for drama when none is needed. They become tedious and fastidious. The book is melodramatic and everyone is a drama queen looking for attention.
Gorgeous!.......2007-06-19
This book made me want to start reading again. Don't be turned off by the length of this book, it is so epically beautiful and magical that it is a true page turner. I fell in love with the main characters Gentle and Pie-oh-pah. I didn't want the book to end. The only exposure I had to Clive Barker before this book was watching Hellraiser. After reading this book I am now hooked and I'm going to check out Thief of Always next.
The writing style is definitely British, but not pretentious. The fantasy aspect is dark and twisted and I really bought in to the five dominion premise. I really love books that create their own mythology like this one. I can't recommend this book enough, I can't believe how long it took me to discover this treasure!
Imajica - A feast for the senses.......2007-04-23
Having read almost everything that Clive Barker has written thus far, I will admit that Imajica contains many elements that seem to echo in several of his books; Weaveworld,The Great and Secret Show/Everville,and most recently the Abarat series. However, this does not detract in any way from the intricately woven story of Imajica. In fact, I think it is in this book that the author finally finds the scope to perfect the "genre" that can only be described as Clive Barker - the mix of the mundane, the fantastical, the horrific and the surreal, blended seamlessly together to create a captivating story that resonates within the soul of the reader. Imajica isn't the easiest to read for many people, mainly because there are so many characters and sub-plots intertwined that it is easy for the reader to lose sight of the story's core and get lost in the minutiae. But I promise you that if you go into the book with an open mind and without preconcieved notions of what a "Clive Barker" novel should be like, you will be rewarded with a most excellent reading experience. I have read the book at least 3 times now and each time find a new gem hidden in plain sight, and have discovered new levels of depth with each reading. It is fantasy, horror, philosophy, theology, theosophy all rolled into one, and John "Gentle" Furie Zacharias is one of the most memorable characters in Barker's worlds.
I take issue with those people who complain about the book being "aimless" or "meandering" - as in any story, there is a time for action and a time for reflection. If you are the type of reader who needs the action to be non-stop and in your face in order to keep your attention, you may be missing many opportunities to discover a truly magical and engaging reading experience. Give it the chance it deserves!!
Fantastic Imagination at Work.......2007-03-01
Although Imajica is a tome of a novel, the story itself is as good as almost any I have ever read. With magnificent settings and all sorts of bizarre creatures, it was definitely an enjoyable read. Clive Barker does tend to play up a theme of love and libido quite a bit too much for my liking, which at times I thought took away from some of the story.
This edition comes with a glossary of pictures and sketches in the back which added a bit more culture and mystery to its story. I also noticed a similarity between this novel and Roger Zelazny's Amber series, which is another enormous epic written about 15 years prior to Imajica and probably a good bet if you are looking for a similar style of story.
Good for any age-group I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and am definitely interested in reading more by Barker in the future.
Imajica.......2007-02-08
This is by far my all time favorite novel. From the first time I read it in 1993 and I am actually reading it again now which is probably like number 20 or 25.
Clive Barker is one of the most versatile writers that I have seen. He can write some of the most erotic stories (Gallilee), some of the most terrifying (Hellbound Heart, Books of Blood) and even go to writing some older children to early teen types of stories (Abarat and Thief of Always).
This book is huge just in story, characters and places. The use of magic was perfect it was not over the top nor under-done. The characters were magnificent. The descriptions of the different dominions was so well done that I could picture the locations in my minds-eye as I was reading this.
I highly recommend this book if you are into sci-fi, fantasy, horror or just looking for something a little different to read. And I think that someone should try to find a way to make this into a movie even if it is an animated type of film.

The Sermons of Jonathan Edwards: A Reader is the first published anthology of sermons by the most influential American Puritan of the 18th century. Some people think Edwards is scary, because his most famous fire-and-brimstone preaching ("Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God") is too severe for today. But this book demonstrates that Edwards is equally capable of rapture, of reason, and of relating to a great variety of Christian experiences. The following passage, from a sermon called "Heaven Is a World of Love," is timeless in its sensibilities: "[B]y living a life of love ... you will be in the way to heaven. As heaven is a world of love, so the way to heaven is the way of love. This will best prepare you for heaven, and make you meet for an inheritance with the saints in that land of light and love. And if ever you arrive at heaven, faith and love must be the wings which must carry you there."
The Sermons of Jonathan Edwards contains 14 sermons (of the more than 1,200 that Edwards preached), including five that have not previously been published. A smart introduction describes the sermons' historical context (some were preached to white congregations, others to Native Americans; all were delivered in the volatile period between the Salem witch trials and the American Revolution) and their literary structure. (Each sermon starts with a Scripture text and brief comment or interpretation; makes a simple statement of doctrine that will be presented in the sermon; and then proceeds with various defenses, applications, and uses of the doctrine, which address the immediate personal and social concerns of the listeners.) As a collection, the editors note, "the sermons have a sense of progression to them that reflects the pilgrimage of the soul ... from its sinful earthly state to a pure heavenly existence." A sermon called "The Way of Holiness," preached when Edwards was a teenager, explains what each step in the soul's pilgrimage should be like, urging believers to live so as to deepen the "likeness in nature between God and the soul of the believer." Edwards's own credo, written when he was 19, declares his intention to follow such a pilgrimage, "to live with all my might, while I do live." --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
The Sermons of Jonathan Edwards : A Reader IS A VERY GOOD BOOK TO READ.......2005-09-21
Jonathan Edwards sermons are inspiring, leading to Christ. 18 century religious american genius. Easy to read. Worth to buy. Highly recommend.
As always, excellent!.......2003-10-13
Edwards is excellent in presenting the gospel. His sermons are quite substantive and always pointing the reader (or hearer in his days) towards God. Should you desire a great book of some of Edward's greatest works, this is the book for you.
Beware of nutcase reviews of this book........2003-09-05
John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards are, without question, two of the greatest theologians in the history of the church. Who is Mike DeSario?
A monument in Christian literature!!.......2002-12-02
The sermons of Edwards are a cornerstone of religious faith in this country. His ability to reach common man led to a national revival. This "calvinistic" doctrine is what our nation needs now! It is both a comfort and a fearful thing to know that our eternal lives are in the hands of a loving God and a just God who can be angry at sin!!! I'm sorry some people feel threatened by Calvin and Edwards but if you are seeking enlightenment this book can help point you there.
Beware of Calvin's footprints!.......2002-10-25
...If you are well grounded in the faith, Steadfast and immovable (Col1:22-23) read this book to sharpen your discernment. In studying these men we get a better understanding of what we are up against presently. When you discover the full scope of Calvin's destructive doctrines, his five points, and how everything ultimately concludes with `unconditional' eternal security, you will see the handprints of Satan in every tenant. These men planted the seeds of modern day easy believeism, although unaware of their negative influence, the things they taught will ring throughout eternity in the ears of millions of lost souls who bought into their security in sin message.
Book Description
Prepared by editors of the distinguished series The Works of Jonathan Edwards, this authoritative anthology includes selected treatises, sermons, and autobiographical material by early America`s greatest theologian and philosopher.
Customer Reviews:
Great anthology.......2000-08-23
This book contains excellent choices from the writings of Jonathan Edwards, the first great philosopher in the American colonies, including some of his earliest writings, mostly just philosophical or biological musings. It reflects some interesting developments in the maturation of his thinking. It also has letters to friends, colleagues, and family members. Some of his most well-known sermons are alongside some representative samples of his sermons. Unfortunately, there is room for only excerpts from his longer works, such as The Religious Affections, but that can't be helped in an affordable popular anthology. If you want all of his works, but the complete works from the same publisher. If you just want a representative sample of some of the best works of this great theologian and philosopher, get this.
Book Description
"Every Christian is called to press on toward maturity in Christ," writes Charles Colson in the foreword. "True believers, who understand the enormity of Christ's sacrifice and the abundance of the life for which he has redeemed us, hunger and thirst to know him better and love him more."
Growing in God's Spirit, with three selections from Jonathan Edwards's writings, outlines "in clear and compelling terms," writes T. M. Moore, "what it means to grow in God's Spirit, and how we may begin to do so with greater consistency and delight." Edwards calls us to a life of faith that - is infused with a transcendent perspective - delights in the prospect of heaven and the presence of God - takes seriously the challenge and privilege of growing in God's Spirit.
Moore divides these selections into brief chapters and adds subheads. Each of the 13 chapters concludes with questions to promote reflection on the meaning and application of Edwards's words. Moore's introduction helps launch the reader into Edwards' text. Growing in God's Spirit is the first in a series of books making the writings of Edwards accessible to all.
"Edwards's writings, some of the greatest treasures of the Kingdom, have enormously influenced my life. . . . This collection will be an invaluable resource for pursuing growth in God's Spirit." Charles Colson
