Book Description
Aimee Phans chilling debut collection is inspired by Operation Babylift, the evacuation of 2,000 Vietnamese orphans just weeks before the fall of Saigon. Half of the stories, told through varying viewpoints and set in Saigon in 1975, follow one such orphans journey. The rest of the collection, set in present-day Little Saigon in Orange County, California, chronicles the lives of four orphans, including a model student and a gang member who preys on Vietnamese families. Passionate and beautifully written, We Should Never Meet introduces one of the very best of the new wave of Asian American authors (David Wong Louie).
Customer Reviews:
Lovely linked short stories.......2006-01-19
Even though the subtitle of this book indicates that these are a series of discrete short stories they are all interlinked by the theme of separation, loss, and coming together set against the backdrop of Operation Babylift. Although the specifics of the situation would seem to indicate that these stories would only be of interest to Asian Americanists, I think that Phan really hits upon universal human situations and emotions.
It's incredible to think that this Aimee Phan's first published book length work because it is very polished.
If you are interested in this very weird political maneuver (ok, we'll bomb your country to bits, but we'll also help out the orphans), I would also suggest seeing the documentary, "Daughter from Danang."
"They wanted to give back their pain.".......2005-11-24
Inspired by the fall of Saigon and Operation Babylift in 1975, Phan's eight stories form an intricate tapestry, tracking Kim, an orphan, and three others, Vinh, a gang leader, Mai, another orphan who has long known Kim in foster care and Huan, who will return for closure to the Vietnam of his birth. This is human drama that begs to be told, two countries bound inextricably by war, the refugees of Operation Babylift desperately carving out new lives in their adopted country. In the first story, "Miss Lien", a child gives birth to a child, in the agony of delivery recalling her youth, the seasons of careless play, although nothing is easy on a farm with many mouths to feed. For a long time, the fighting seems far removed from the countryside, the guns and bombs a distant thunder, the children not yet afraid. Then the war moves closer, each family digging a bunker to shelter from the artillery lighting up the night sky. Eventually the farm is destroyed, the animals slaughtered. When Lien leaves home with her baby to work in the city, she plans to return, unaware that her country is plunging toward its terrible destiny, where motherless babies will be left to their fate.
The title story, "We Shall Never Meet", introduces Kim, one of the Operation Babylift orphans, who has already learned that each foster home brings a new set of problems, expectations and demands. Emancipated, Kim lives with a gang leader, Vinh, and recently befriended by a shop owner she once tried to rob. Trust does not come easily to the American-raised Kim, but she is drawn to this woman, who speaks in her native tongue. Constantly disappointed, raised in a world of want, Kim gives back in kind when the woman refuses an unreasonable request, setting in motion a terrible revenge. In "Visitors", Phan contrasts street life with hardworking residents of Little Saigon in Orange County, who pass their days in hopeful vigilance, nostalgia for the home country and the street-wise ways of those who prey on their own. Each of the stories fills in another part of the picture, the scant memories of the homeland fused with the harsh reality of life in America.
Moving back and forth from the fall of Saigon in 1975 and the desperate social dissolution that followed the troop withdrawal from the bloody Vietnam war to the crowded streets of Little Saigon two decades later, the author writes the legacy of a generation born of war, rescued and brought to a new country, there to be shuffled between foster homes, recreating the only environment they have known, a hardscrabble mixture of gang violence and quick-witted alliances. The majority of them ghettoized outcasts, a small society riddled with economic inequality and discontent, these characters personify their distress. Phan speaks eloquently for those who do not know they have a voice, marginalized by race and circumstance in a land of plenty. This writer has much to offer, her intimate knowledge a reservoir of hope, an untapped source of human drama. Luan Gaines/ 2005.
Perfect!.......2005-10-24
As I requested, my book came perfectly new: no bent pages, no writing/highlighting, etc. I was very satisfied.
AN INSIDER PERSPECTIVE.......2005-09-26
Aimee Phan in 'We Should Never Meet' masterfully weaves different chronological moments in time to create a complex insider perspective on what it was like to be a player in the Vietnam-America story. The tangible, earthy images of Vietnam, bare feet in warm soil, conical hats beating off scorching heat, blend with the identity confusion experienced by Vietnamese transported to America after the Vietnam War. Violence and anger and betrayal are presented blatently, yet in such a way as to inspire compassion and understanding for these characters, caught in a bigger story over which they have very little control. At its heart, this brilliant piece of writing is about what it is to be human, the strange tension in each of us between love and hate, anger and trust, rejection and acceptance, identity and confusion.
Impressive literary debut!.......2005-04-16
This eloquent, unflinching & masterfully written book frequently brought me to tears. I recommended it often to our customers at Powells on Hawthorne.

NOT BAD!!!.......2007-06-23
I thought that this was really good book when I read it the first time. This is the book that started me down a long road of Johanna Lindsey books. I'm not sure when it was first publised early eightest or late seventies but it was my first romance novel that I ever read and loved it at the time. If you like Johanna's later books you should love this one. Every book kept getting better and better. So I would give this one a try.
How many characters were in this book? Too many........2007-01-31
Ok at the start of the book, the heroine is 14. It made me do a double-take because it went on with her being 14 for a while and I thought that this was when the romance was going to start. I was prepared to toss the book if that became the case. Fortunately, some time does pass (but you never know how long until her age is mentioned when she turns 17. After that, you have to guess how much time has passed. I don't know how old she was in the end but I'm guessing in her early 20s.)
Now...this woman must be the most beautiful woman on the earth for all the men that are in love with her. The first one, was his name Billy? Anderson whatever, his obsession I could understand. Cause it was there from the start and grows. Bradford...so do the wild and wacky for a week and suddenly he's just gotta marry her. Farfetched...but I guess plausible since we're in an imaginary world anyway. Robert, the brother-in-law of Zachary...he doesn't toss her an appreciative glance until Jacob says she'll become part of the family where everyone else, including her, thought she was to be a servant. But he's in love with her and tells Bradford and Jacob that he will have her in the end. At some later point, Angela tells him she's to marry Bradford and he's never seen again. Grant...well I think his was complete sexual attraction. He proposes a few times...but in the end marries someone else. Hank...ok Hank, I thought maybe he was some long-lost brother of Bradford or something because of the way Angela described him...but apparently not since he leaves and doesn't come back.
Then there were a few adversaries. Billy, Crystal, and Courtney. Crystal ends up having to have babies to get money, Billy...well I think he's dead I dunno. And Courtney...Bradford escapes the fire (he's tied to a chair...and escapes a fire raging around him...somehow...) well we don't know what happens to him.
Point blank....too much stuff going on. Too many enemies...and what was this shocking family secret? Now I admit I felt a little grossed out at the prospect of them being half-siblings. I was so glad that wasn't the case.
But this book was written like a bad fanfiction I think...though maybe a little better.
And the love scenes....not very graceful like she's been known to write.
Not one of her better stories.......2006-11-05
Angela Sherrington is the daughter of a poor, alcoholic Alabama farmer whose drinking leads to his untimely demise. She is taken in by her rich neighbor, Jacob Maitland, whose son she has been in love with her entire life. When Jacob decides to educate Angela she is sent up north for schooling. There she runs into Bradford Maitland, her long-time crush, and a case of mistaken identity winds up with a night of passion for them both.
Bradford is a jealous, conniving pig who refuses to listen to reason and instead reacts on instinct. If he punched one more person who he thought was in love with Angela, I thought I might scream. And Angela. Wow. What a naive, flirtatious half-wit. If only she could have just listened sometimes instead of just jumping to conclusions she might have found happiness a lot sooner and without causing herself so much heartache.
I'm on the fence with this one. I have seen far better from Johanna Lindsey, but far worse. I love her work and will read anything that she writes, even though I occasionally get burned. That being said, this book was written in 1982, so I can forgive her for a lot of its faults. Still, I would recommend Love Me Forever or Prisoner of My Desire for more sterling examples of her work.
No plot, shallow characters.......2004-06-21
I've been rereading all the JLs (so far, I've finished 18 in a month), and "Glorious Angel" is just as I remembered it 10 years ago: unappealing, passionless, and actually quite tedious. It is one of JL's first books, and it is obviously a pedestrian effort. The "love" dialogue is beyond cheesy and the love scenes are tepid. Worse, it has a meandering plot that starts with Angela's crush on Bradford as a child (why she likes him, I'll never know), then moves on to a rags-to-riches story with Angela losing all of her Southern white trash talk (which was actually quite charming), to a forced separation based on a rumor of incest that really never seemed to upset Angela other than to make her run away from Bradford. The best part about this book is that it sets up Hank Chavez's story in "Heart of Thunder," which is a million times better. In fact, only a single year separates the publication of "Glorious Angel" and "Heart of Thunder," but somehow JL's writing style, sense of character, and dialogue improve tremendously during that short time period. Which makes me suspect that "Glorious Angel" was written long, long before its publication date and published without the benefit of editing, rewriting, etc. That's too bad. "Glorious Angel" could have been much better had JL spent some more time playing up the passion and personalities between Angela and Bradford and less time on fluff like matchmaking in Texas and the pointless assassination attempts on Bradford's life (as an example of how silly this book is, Bradford is tied to a chair in a burning house and his fear of death gives him He-Man strength to break through the ropes, no knife or anything, to escape. Wow!). If you are interested in Wild West romances written by JL, I highly recommend "Heart of Thunder," "A Heart So Wild," "Once A Princess," or "Savage Thunder." I do not recommend "Glorious Angel" unless you want to read it as a prequel to "Heart of Thunder."
Not one of her best..........2003-02-25
Angela Sherrington is the daughter of a poor farmer in Alabama who has had a crush on Bradford Maitland since she was eleven, when he rode past her on his black stallion and splashed her with mud. He tossed her a coin, for the ruined dress and she keeps this coin hung around her neck as a reminder. Some 9 or 10 years later she spots Bradford about to walk into a building in Masachusettes and follows him, not knowing that she has just walked into a bordelo.
I really liked the first half of the book but knew I would be disappointed with the second half after Angela runs away. She's just too much of a flirt for my liking. Kissing strangers left right and centre. Not one of JLs best books. Try the Western series, much better!

Sky High Wonderful Story.......2006-03-22
I purchase this book to read to my children. I also bought 6 more to give to friends to read to their children. I appreciate a book for children that has an endearing story complimented by beautiful artwork. Nancy Willard wrote a nostalgic tale about a mother and a daughter and a perplexed father. It's Mom's birthday. She doesn't want a fuss "no presents please" but wait, maybe there is something. She remembers something from her childhood, but no, that was too long ago to be able to reproduce. Her daughter goes on a hunt to find that special present from her mother's childhood memory while Dad goes off to the mall. It's a happy story with a delightful ending, sure to please.
"Thoughtful and gentle...".......2000-07-02
I am an elementary school teacher and one of my students - an extremely thoughtful and insightful 7 year-old - gave me an angelfood cake (with this book) for an end-of-the-year gift. She told me to be careful when I eat the cake and to look for the surprise. I was finishing up my room cleaning and had a piece of the cake, but unfortunately, the rest of the cake went bad in the heat. I looked through the rest of the cake to find a thimble. Puzzled, I read the book and cried through the last part of it. For anyone who is wanting to show good wishes, love, luck, modern angels watching over you or just a TERRIBLY wonderful and sentimental gesture towards someone...Read this book, bake an angelfood cake with a thimble in it and give book and cake as a gift. My thimble is in my china cabinet next to my fine crystal and Hummell figurines - it has that much heartfelt value. If you are "angel phobic" or concerned about religious undertones - it really has none. No preaching involved, just simply a FEEL GOOD story. There's no rhyme or reason to the illustrations which are detailed, subtle, yet bright and the storyline is quite cleaver and unpredictable. But it is the meaning woven into the words and storyline that is honest, loving and genuine. One to treasure for generations!
Special Birthday Surprise.......2000-07-01
When I was nine, my favorite teacher gave me this book to read. It was incredibly imaginative and it put a smile to my face on even the worst of days. For my mother's birthday, i used the exact recipe and directions for the The High Rise Glorious Skittle Skat Roarious Sky Pie Angel Food Cake to bake her the very best birthday surprise ever! Read it today!
High rise children's literature that transcends age.......1999-12-18
What a perfect marriage of words and pictures! This is the story of a girl who wants to give her mother a birthday gift more precious than gold: something that blends love, nostalgia and magic with good cake. She is aided (and abetted) in this venture by her goofy, unwitting uncle, and a trio of the most endearing angels ever illustrated. (Check out how the oldest angel's socks don't match!) The finely drawn pictures are delightfully evocative and reward close inspection. The whole book soars with whimsy, glory, and love. A keepsake.
Beautiful Words, Beautiful Pictures.......1999-05-19
I was given The High Rise Glorious Skittle Skat Roarious Sky Pie Angel Food Cake for my seventh birthday (which was about eight years ago) and it still has a special place on my bookshelf. Every few months, I take it down, read, and find something new in it. The story is sweet, innocent and capivating all at the same time. The intricate pictures are beautiful beyond words; they represent a merging of the real and imaginary. Every one, child or adult, should own this book. It is happiness in paperback.

"A Glorious Angel Show" is highly recommended for family story hour celebration of Christmas and all that it means........2006-11-05
Written with an elegant originality by Dandi Daley Mackall and beautifully illustrated by Susan Mitchell, "A Glorious Angel Show" is the tender 'pop-up' picturebook story of the Christmas nativity recounted with rhyme and repetitive phrases ideal for preschool and kindergarten children. The rather spectacular pop-up spread in the center of the picture reveals the heavenly proclamation by the angels that the savior has been born. Wonderfully 'child friendly' and a welcome addition to personal and family Christmas book collections, "A Glorious Angel Show" is highly recommended for family story hour celebration of Christmas and all that it means.
Very disillusioned!.......2006-11-02
This book has ONE pop-up, and it is lame! If you're a fan of the Sabuda or Reinhart pop-up books, you will be VERY sad you bought this book, in my opinion. I'm returning mine.
The Perfect Christmas Book.......2006-10-11
I can't believe such a gorgeous, lyrical classic can sell for this price. The cover is embossed, and the pop-up so well done. The text is poetic, capturing the thrill of Christmas from the angels' point of view, depicting their excitement on one level and the drama of the birth on another. This book has it all!

glorious angels.......2000-04-07
I stumbled across this book and was intrigued by the beautiful pictures of the children. What was even more special was the fact that the pictures were from families around the world. The set up of the book was very well laid out. The verses were tender and full of joyful statements. When you think of children it always brings a smile to your face and that is exactly what this book did for me.

A departure for Laurie R. King.......2007-04-26
What an interesting book and very well read by Alyssa Bresnahan. Leigh Richards is a pseudonym for Laurie R. King and the flavor and tone of the novel is similar to her Kate Martinelli series. This novel is not a mystery, but rather placed in the near future after a man made virus has killed and continues to kill men and boys, such that the ratio of men to women is 1:10. Additionally the world has experienced near annihilation and radiation has poisoned much of the world. This creates a matrimonial society where men are protected and hidden. Women live in a variety of situations - cities to small tribes - and assume what we might call traditional male roles. There is also much for dog lovers here as dogs are featured in primary roles. A wonderful read.
Book Description
Set in the near future and inspired by the captivating myth of the warrior queen Califia, this brilliantly inventive novel tells the story of a small, peaceful community of women tucked away in a world gone mad.
Only the elders of the Valley remember life the way it used to be, when people traveled in automobiles and bought food others had grown. When the ratio of male to female was nearly the same. Before the bombs fell, and a deadly virus claimed the world's men.
Now, civilization's few surviving males are guarded by women warriors like Dian, the Valley's chief protector, as fierce and loyal as the guard dogs she trains. When an unexpected convoy of strangers rides into her village, it is
Dian who meets them, ready to do battle.
To her surprise, the visitors come in peace and bear a priceless gift, whose arrival is greeted with as much suspicion as delight. And indeed, the strangers want something in return, a request that could change the future of
the Valley into one of hope--or utter desolation.
It is up to Dian to discover their motive, in a journey that will cost her far more than she ever imagined, a journey from which she may never return.

Two Covenants: Your Blessings in Christ Moving from Promise to Fulfillment.......2006-11-07
Excellent presentation of what a covenant child of God should know about this sacred union. This message of the Hesed should be researched, meditated and owned by every true child of God. I have studied over a dozen books on this subject, most of them are very good, but none surpass Andrew Murray's.
I know it's a Cliche, but You Must Read this Book!.......2006-05-05
If there is one book a Christian should read, it's this one. I know many people have said that about many different books, but this one deserves to be read. It establishes the foundation of the Christain faith and teaches things that should be taught in church (but are not currently). It is full of the Life of Jesus and how that Life is given to us.
It compares the Old Covanent with the New and disspells many errors that are promanent these days. The english is a bit hard to read (written in 1898), but at the same time it makes you think (which is good).
Considering how many shallow "Christian" books there are right now (i.e. Purpose Driven Life, Your Best Life Now), this one is deep with divine Truth and Life(the real life of Jesus) that will comfort and challenge you.
