"A life is full of isolated events," writes Carol Shields near the end of Unless, "but these events, if they are to form a coherent narrative, require odd pieces of language to link them together, little chips of grammar (mostly adverbs or prepositions) that are hard to define... words like therefore, else, other, also, thereof, therefore, instead, otherwise, despite, already, and not yet." Shield's explanation for her novel's title lends meaning to this multilayered narrative in which a mother's grief over a daughter's break with the family revises her feminist outlook and pushes her craft as a writer in a new direction.

The oldest daughter of 44-year-old Reta Winters suddenly, inexplicably, drops out of college and ends up on a Toronto street corner panhandling, with a cardboard sign around her neck that reads "goodness." The quiet comforts of Reta's small-town life and the constancy of her feminist perspective sustain her hope that her daughter will snap out of this, whatever "this" is. Threaded into her family's crisis is her ongoing internal elegy on the exclusion of women from the literary canon, which she transposes to mean her daughter's exclusion from humanity. Reta wonders if her daughter has discovered, as she herself did years before, that the world is "an endless series of obstacles, an alignment of locked doors," and has chosen to pursue the one thing that doesn't require power or a voice: goodness.

In her own writing, Reta reaffirms her own sense of self, as well as her sense of humor. As her theoretical reflections on modern womanhood play counterpoint to her unwavering sense of creating a home and keeping her family together, Reta's smarts and fears form a wonderfully coherent narrative--a life worth reading about. With Unless, the inaugural title in HarperCollins's Fourth Estate imprint, Shields (author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Stone Diaries) once again asserts her place in the canon. --Emily Russin

2 out of 5 stars Not her best.......2007-05-28

I enjoyed several of her books but not this one. First of all the plausibility--Who would not have their 19 year old daughter forcibly committed in these circumstances? I can't believe they could be this passive.
Second--The feminism angle is way over the top. Third, most of the characters are poorly developed. Fourth--It's almost always a bad idea to write a novel about a writer writing a novel.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-25

I picked up this book after finishing her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Stone Diaries, which I thouroughly enjoyed. I, too found it a bit boring, but mostly I just found the character a bit pathetic. She writes numerous letters (all unmailed) castigating various authors for not including any women in their articles on great authors, thinkers etc. I consider myself a feminist, not a radical, mind you, just an average middle-aged woman who owns her own business and has taken charge of her life. The attitude was so defeatest, that her daughter is so defeated by this male dominated society that she checks out of it. It seemed a bit ridiculous and almost insulting to women. Although I felt for her, I could not relate to the main character's turmoil at all. She just seemed so weak and resigned to her daughter's fate.

1 out of 5 stars Secularism gone amok = mush.......2007-03-13

Take a person who prides herself on having sex with her 'partner' on their first date, having three children with no marriage, treating her mother-in-law like a boarder at meals, and wondering why her children, particularly the oldest, Nora, has no structure to her life. She's so lost trying to find herself that she had to drop out and live the life of a derelict. This is what happens when children continue searching in vain for what their parents can not give them. . . possibly what they were not given by their parents. It results in mush: mushy story about mushy decisions and mushy results. Oh, they get in the claims for feminism so to satisfy the liberal readers but otherwise, it's just many, many, many words, very little emotion and no rationale whatsoever except that maturity doesn't result from living in the vacuous world provided by these
extreme secularists.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-06-01

I struggle to find the words to express my feelings towards this book. While reading Unless, I found myself perfectly identifying with it.

Very insightful, very original work. I commend Shields for her artistic and poetic style. It's as though she reaches within me, and pulls out exactly the words I long to express, the feelings I never knew had a name. She brings to light the silent questioning, the soft and unsettling feeling that something's not quite right in a world where women are the healers and the caretakers. A tremendous burden at a sometimes tremendous cost.

I enthusiastically gave this book to my sister to read. She couldn't get through it and finally gave up. She told me she became bored with it.

I find that people either absolutely love Shields or they are bored to tears by her. I would venture to say that if you love to explore the significance of your inner life, then this book will intrigue and captivate you. Many have complained that the ending was not good, or that the storyline was weak. This book's main plot is not about what's going on with the life of the main character (that is only the subplot), the story is one of a woman's inner turmoil, how she deals with it, how she grows, and she finds meaning in her life.

Whether or not we understand what is going on with her daughter is not really the point, nor is what we discover in the end. What we discover, rather, is a woman's journey towards self-understanding - as a mother, as a writer, as a woman grieving, as a wife, as a woman of strength, and as a woman of weakness.

This book truly inspired me. It came to me like an old friend with kind words and a welcoming shoulder.

5 out of 5 stars Essential goodness.......2006-04-30

Fourty-four year old Reta Winters has three children, a loving husband, and a successful career as a writer of light fiction. Her life is comfortable, normal - and so she suffers a terrible shock when she discovers that her eldest daughter, Norah, has dropped out of university to sit on a streetcorner, a begging bowl in her lap and a cardboard sign that reads only 'GOODNESS' strung around her neck. Norah gives no explanation to her family, refuses to speak with them or to come home. 'Unless' follows Reta's struggle to understand what has caused her to withdraw from the world, as she attempts to continue on with her own life.
This is a lovely novel. It moves very slowly, but is written with exquisite grace and skill. Reta is utterly believable as a character; her meditations on life are not, as some reviewers on this page have claimed, 'dull' or 'trite', but poetic, insightful, moving. Her sadness is tangible, and poignant - handled very well by Shields, who can lift the smallest details of life to almost spiritual heights. Her writing has a certain modesty, a frankness and integrity to it that is delightful, refreshing. 'Unless' is appealing because, like Norah, it asks nothing of itself - and it gives the reader all in return. Wonderful.

      Book Description

Early in the twentieth century a new character type emerged in the crime novels of American writers such as Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler: the "hard-boiled" detective, most famously exemplified by Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon. Unlike the analytical detectives of nineteenth-century fiction, such as Edgar Allan Poe's Inspector Dupin, the new detectives encountered cases not as intricate logical puzzles but as stark challenges of manhood. In the stories of these characters and their criminal opposites, John T. Irwin explores the tension within ideas of American masculinity between subordination and independence and, for the man who becomes "his own boss," the conflict between professional codes and personal desires. He shows how, within different works of hard-boiled fiction, the professional either overcomes the personal or is overcome by it, ending in ruinous relationships or in solitary integrity, and how within the genre all notions of manly independence are ultimately revealed to be illusions subordinate to fate itself.

Tracing the stylistic development of the genre, Irwin demonstrates the particular influence of the novel of manners, especially the writing of F. Scott Fitzgerald. He goes on to argue that, from the time of World War II, when hard-boiled fiction began to appear on the screen in film noir just as women entered the workforce in large numbers, many of its themes came to extend to female empowerment. Finally, he discusses how these themes persist in contemporary dramatic series on television, representing the conflicted lives of Americans into the twenty-first century.

                    A Bad Man's Desire

At first glance, the lovely Easterner Anthea Bright seems woefully unsuited for her position as the new schoolmarm in Haven, Kansas. But behind that fine finishing school polish is a fiery spirit and a determination to succeed. Gabriel Jackson, however, is a different kind of challenge. The intensely passionate, devastatingly sexy man is Haven's most disreputable citizen -- and he's put Anthea's level head and her heart in a furious spin. How can theprim, pretty newcomer hope to stand firm to her principles when she feels breathless whenever Gabriel's near? And though a small voice inside tells her the "bad man's" not nearly as bad as his reputation would suggest, does she dare surrender to this dangerous stranger who is bound and determined to make Anthea his bride?

                    4 out of 5 stars He's not a bad man!.......2003-06-12

Anthea Bright has relocated to Haven, Kansas from the east to take a position as the small town's schoolteacher. She has fine polish that states she has grown up with money and manners. Her ways are gentle and yet she must be strong and strict to handle this bunch of midwestern children. Gabriel Jackson comes to the school one day to confront this new teacher that is obviously not qualified as such and finds that she is a lot more resilient than he would have guessed. As Gabriel begins to complain to Anthea about what his daughter should be taught, he discovers she has a fierce passion for her teaching and her students and he best not second-guess her.

The Bad Man's Bride was a satisfying read. It was a pleasing narrative and the leads are unique, likable and captivating characters. The story's pace faltered about halfway through the book and that is really the main reason for the four star rating rather than a five star. Although I enjoyed this story, I was not compelled to keep reading because it was a book that fascinated me. It didn't fall into that "couldn't put down" category. It was just a good, tame read.

The hero, Gabriel, although supposedly this bad man (thus the title), brings a bastard child, a nine year old girl into his house to raise as his own, when her mother, a prostitute, dies. This child is not Gabriel's. He was raised as a bastard himself and wants to protect this little girl who has no one to take care of her. He lets everyone assume it is his child who he has neglected for years until the mother died. This child is very dear and fragile. She adds so much to this story. Children in a romance novel usually don't add much to the story but this one does.

The sweet, proper heroine is not a virgin! She isn't the victim of some awful rape either. And it makes no difference to the hero. Their relationship does not fall into the same old romantic plot lines. Gabriel and Anthea get along very well and do not pick on each other or have disagreements. They both have some unspoken doubts concerning their relationship but these doubts were actually normal. They made sense under the circumstances. I guess I am saying that the book was actually believable all the way through!

This book is about the romance between Gabriel and Anthea. It has a couple of side plots that take up few pages. I love it when a romance novel is about a romance. Gabriel and Anthea are the primary focus of this tale and they spend a lot of time together. If you have read many of my reviews, you know that this is a really important facet to me about a romance novel. I want to see the romance relationship mature. I want to read pages of Gabriel and Anthea interacting. I was certainly not disappointed on that point.

The sensual scenes rate about a four out of five (see More About Me for rating guidelines). These scenes appear after the first half and really enhance the story line. You see genuine feelings developing between these two and there is depth to their relationship almost from the beginning. I do have to agree with one reviewer about the name of the book. The Bad Man's Bride is not really a representative title. The heroine could not be described as a bride for a good portion of the story. And, in my opinion, this man does not have the history to be considered a "bad man" by the town and doesn't behave like a "bad man" currently.

This is my first book to read by Susan Kay Law. I certainly look forward to working my way through her backlist.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE SUSAN KAY LAW.......2002-06-20

The woman has become my new favorite author (with Johanna Lindsey, Jude Devereaux and Susan Johnson).

THE BAD MAN'S BRIDE is the first book I've read and I just love it. I could not put it down. Anthea is a gentle-bred eastern girl with 2 sisters back East. She has come to Kansas to make a living and send the money back to her sisters. Anthea loves children, so naturally she takes a teaching job in Haven, Kansas (not to be confused with the real town of Haven).

While she is in the schoolhouse writing a letter to her sisters about how wonderful Kansas is (in reality to her it isn't, but why tell her sisters how horrible it is), Gabriel Jackson storms in the schoolhouse demanding she do the job the town has paid her for... TEACH the kids reading, writing and arithmetic, something that will be useful to his "daughter" when she grows up, NOT balancing a book on her head and walking across the room.

Anthea takes offense to this because she went to the best Young Ladies schools and learned it and everything else (reading, writing and arithmetic) and lets him know it to.

Because the other kids pick on Gabriel's "daughter", Anthea takes the child under her wing, bring her that much closer to Gabriel. And then there's the stories flying around town about how Gabriel acquired Lily (the daughter), and the town council who want Gabriel out of town, but end up liking him. Including the mayor pro-tem, who's wife Gabriel had an affair with before the woman married the city councilman. Ever since, that woman has had an infatuation with Gabriel, but Gabriel, once he got Anthea to be his bride cause he wanted to, gives the councilman's wife a piece of his mind about her infatuation with him.

THIS is just toooo good to put down and leave alone. If you have a chance GET THIS BOOK as well as others in the series.

                    3 out of 5 stars Quite boring.......2002-06-18

Anthea Bright has been born into nobility, but the circumstances have left her and her two sisters in poverty. Therefore she takes a job as a teacher in a small town in Kansas, but she's having trouble adjusting to the new lifestyle. Being a city girl, her knowledge in dancing and good manners is not particularly useful when faced with snakes and snowstorms. But, the locals and their rigid opinions about Gabriel and Lily who both are born bastards cause the most difficulties. Especially since Anthea is beginning to grow strong feelings for them both. Unfortunately, since she cannot afford to loose her position, she has to be very careful in her conduct towards them.

The book is a generally good read, and the relationship between Anthea and Gabriel is described both nicely and believable. I especially like the fact that they are actually talking to each other, thereby convincing me that they really have feelings for each other. Unfortunately, the story lacks highlights and at times the book is so terribly boring that it's tempting to put it away. It is also too easy to foresee the development way ahead, so what happens later never comes as any surprise.

5 out of 5 stars SIZZLING AMERICANA ROMANCE.......2001-12-09

Really enjoyable read - great way to spend a snowy afternoon.

                    5 out of 5 stars A sizzling love..........2001-09-24

Anthea Bright came from Philadelphia to Haven, Kansas to become a school teacher. On her first week of school, Gabriel Jackson barges into the school and demands to know what the Hell she's teaching because his charge, Lily isn't learning how to read and write. From that moment on, they'll both be fighting a very captivating attraction. It doesn't make it easier that Gabriel has this bad boy reputation and that he's the pariah of the town. (It's one of those small towns where everyone gossips about everyone)

The story takes place in the 1885 and it really is a wonderful read! My favorite parts were when Gabriel, Anthea and Lily act as a family. (Lily is like an orphan and Gabriel picked her up and decides to care for her) I like reading THE BAD MAN'S BRIDE because it's a historical romance (sort of) with a lot of spice in it. Usually in historical romances, the characters would be meek and kind of quiet but this romance has a lot of spice in it!

I know there's another book that continues this one. It's called THE MOST WANTED BACHELOR and I'm thinking about reading it because THE MOST WANTED BACHELOR features Anthea's sister, Kathryn.

                    ^_^ ~ Izzy

                    Book Description

Special interest groups have bullied the government into passing the Clean Act, effectively killing freedom of speech and silencing the country into submission. TV and God become one and the same as America wages its own holy war against its citizens. Meet Jennie 2.5, media slut turned info-terrorist, out to save the country from itself, and restore free will and self expression. Hailed internationally as ground-breaking work in the field of sequential art, Channel Zero challenges and tests the limits, combining current events and no-future shock into a dark, paranoid, deep-ambient visual narrative.

5 out of 5 stars Great At Date of Publication, Prophetic in Retrospective.......2006-11-29

Channel Zero is the tale of a New York art student living in the midst of change for the worse in America. New laws and fears have brought about change in society and leave our bill of rights in bloody tatters on the ground. While many sit down and revel in their safety, protagonist Jennie 2.5 decides to do something about it. Through truly groundbreaking design/comic art, author/artist Brian Wood dumps us off with Jennie as she puts her propaganda plan to wake up the masses into full throttle, only to find out that she's probably in over her head and not necessarily as free of America's faults as she thinks she is.

In addition to Jennie, cameos of other people from other angles are shown throughout the book. Whether in one page bios introducing characters that would be used in future B. Wood comics, or in mini stories, such as that of the activist-assassinating "cleaner" that is only doing her job, Brian weaves a whole world for us to look into that, while primitive at times, is still real enough to scare the hell out of us.

The greatest part of Channel Zero, though, is not it's art, or even it's story. It is it's fallout. Published in comic form back in the 1990s, and in graphic novel for the first time in 2000, this book is a pre-9/11 look into the post-9/11 world. With an oppressive "Clean Act" that is terribly remniscent of the USA PATRIOT Act of the real world, it was as if Brian was trying to warn us of the coming socio-political onslaught.

It's never to late to start listening.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-07-15

I've never read a book as ambitious as this before. There was every chance for Brian Wood to totally fall on his face, and he flew instead. This, and its prequel, Jennie One, make a FANTASTIC story. Get this NOW, before it's gone.

5 out of 5 stars An epiphany in comic form.......2005-10-04

Seriously... you need to read this. I've been reading comics for years, but 99% of it has always been superhero stuff. The only time i've really read anything different is if it's written by Grant Morrison or BKV. Well let me tell you, I'm now a convert. Brain Wood is a master and this is seriously one of the most compelling reads I've ever had the pleasure of owning. The book will really challenge your mind and seriously make you think. Just do yourself a favor... buy it, read it, love it.

4 out of 5 stars "Generica" the Beautiful.......2004-04-01

Brian Wood's, "Channel Zero," is a terse, taut, techno thriller on what happens when a facist, authoritarian governmental system replaces Democracy in present day America. The writing is quite exceptional in presenting a mostly believeable scenario (but still somewhat hard to believe that media/info outlets are so completely shut-down and filtered that everyday Americans no longer know what's happening in the rest of the world) on how citizens both cope with the new constraints and eventually rise up to fight back. From start to finish the grim paranoia is effectively conveyed by Wood's masterful black and white illustration interspersed with faux propaganda artwork.

At this price, this book is of great value and not to be missed at all.

What happened to Jennifer Havel that turned her into info-terrorist and media-slut Jennie 2.5, heroine of the internationally-acclaimed graphic novel CHANNEL ZERO? CZ: JENNIE ONE tells the story as she drops out of art school and builds her socio-political consciousness during one of the most turbulent and violent periods of American history... the passing of the Clean Act and the loss of free speech. Artist Becky Cloonan puts the perfect images to Brian Wood's story: a perfect complement to the original Channel Zero but with a style all its own. A must-have for even the most casual Channel Zero fan.

3 out of 5 stars A prequel of sorts to 'Channel Zero'.......2004-04-01

While nowhere as deep or moody as the first Channel Zero book - 'Jennie One,' is nonetheless not a bad read for fans of this saga. Functioning as a prequel of sorts, this book chronicles Jennie 2.5's earlier days in NYC on the eve of the passage of the Clean Act Bill and how she becomes ensconed in the new American rebellion. This book is also noteworthy in that Brian Wood turns over penciling duties to Becky Cloonan who manages to preserve the grim film noir tone of the original while brining a fresh visual approach of her own.

GH Thomason presents us with a depiction of everyday life in lower-class America. The characters are both mundane in their existance and extraordinary in their feelings. This book is a must for twenty-somethings in modern America!

5 out of 5 stars A Day in the life of...........1999-12-05

Linda and Charlie Rivers deal with life as most 20-30 somethings do: having a good time, working hard, and spending time with friends. I can see a bit of myself and people that I know in this book. It is not a book with a mission to save the world-but to tell a story about people and how they live. There are consequences to decisions we make and Linda Rivers must make a choice. The characters try to do what is right and are there for one another. I found it an enjoyable read with vivid details. G.H. Thomason has a way of describing people that makes one beleive they know the characters This is an enjoyable read. Would be great for college students or gen Xer's.

                    4 out of 5 stars A good first attempt.......1999-05-13

This book was a good debut by it's author G.H. Thomason. Only in his mid-twenties, he writes with a style somewhat similar to Barbara Kingsolver (The Bean Trees). Unfortunately his characters aren't on a journey, they are simply existing in their lives. He draws us into the lives of Charlie and Linda Rivers and their friends and neighbors. From double shifts at the restaurant to beers at Lucky's, we see it all.

I look forward to Thomason's next book.

Fox causes a person to think about the larger issues of life. He makes some worthwhile points in this book, but the major weakness is he misses the mark when he writes that you and I are gods (p. 125). That's a lie! We're NOT!
The valid things he teaches are the principles taught by Jesus Who is God. He tells how to apply the Golden Rule, i.e., to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. He elaborates on a principle from Proverbs, that as a man thinks so is he by telling us "you are always thinking, when you are not asleep, and you know that it is in the selection of your thoughts that your destiny lies" (p. 97). If read with caution, and the lies are discarded, he makes some valid points in this book.

I found this book at a crossroads in my life. This was the first book that I read by Emmet Fox, it began a transfiguration in my life likened to no other. This book deals with specifics in consciousness and practical, real ways to address anxieties and problems each of us face in our daily lives. I can't recommend it enough; it changed my entire outlook on life.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It is meant to be read one essay per day. I have seen the principles described in the book enacted in my life and have been transformed by understanding and applying Fox's view of prayer.

5 out of 5 stars Luz contenida en la tinta.......2005-08-12
