Book Description
The Time of the Doves, the powerfully written story of a naïve shop-tender during the Spanish Civil War and beyond, is a rare and moving portrait of a simple soul confronting and surviving a convulsive period in history. The book has been widely translated, and was made into a film.

Tour-de-force.......2007-03-06
What a terrific story. Set during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War and dictatorship, of the 1930's and 40's, the novel traces the mediocre and often turbulent life of Natalia, nicknamed "Colometa", through difficult years of famine and depression, as a young mother and unskilled laborer in Catalonia.
We're not talking about an overtly political novel here: this is a story of the human condition, the suffering that any one of us endures at some point in our individual lives. The author scarcely mencions political struggle, nor does she take sides; the dominant theme here is the perpetual plight of a passive yet resiliant female who fights for survival in a brutal and depressed urban environment.
The first person narration creates a wonderful tone. The narrator is soulful, spontaneous, and often gutwrenching. Her language is extremely natural and authentic. The prose reads as if it were a transcription of someone's internal thought process: unpredictable yet familiar. The reader forms an intense emotional bond with the narrative voice that leads to an abundance of tear-jerking moments.
This is the kind of novel that you become attatched to, whether you are a casual reader or a literature scholar. I picked it up an couldn't put it down.
Lastly this novel represents a keen example of true minority struggle under the harsh conditions of a dictatorship. Its original language of publication, Catalan, was prohibited in 1939 by the Spanish government, and therefore, its mere existance is an act of rebellion.
Don't confuse this female story of survival with the sappy victimist writers of the Gloria Anzaldua type - "Colometa" is a real survivor, whose struggle inspires compassion and reflection.
A Life During Conflict.......2007-01-10
This novel, written by Merce Rodoreda during her exile from Spain and well after the Spanish Civil War, describes the life of a woman who grows from young adulthood through middle age during political upheaval. She could have described war, or poverty, or death, or fear, and appealed solely to sentiment but she does not. This novel is rich and complex, appealing to both sense and sensation. Her protagonist, Quimet, is usually sympathetic but sometimes not, as most human beings are.
While the Spanish Civil War is the setting for this novel, Rodoreda writes outside the lines and makes a book which describes this specific place and anyplace. To give context to other reviewers' displeasure with the translated title of La Placa del Diamante, Franco forbid Catalans, the residents of Barcelona and Merce Rodoreda among them, to speak their own language. Language is primary to Catalans and Rodoreda was a Catalan writer despite Franco.
Rodoreda writes tangible descritions of poverty and unhappiness, sliding back and forth from the concrete outside world and the narrator's sometimes dreamy interior world. The shifts in description themselves describe how Quimet's consciousness is altered by poverty, by hunger, by death and by redemption.
This is an excellent and thoughtful novel, and a pleasure to read.
Emotionally Powerful.......2006-10-30
This is an amazingly powerful book. It is narrated by a young girl in Spain just before, during, and after the Spanish Civil War. The style is something like stream-of-consciousness. The narrator is niave and almost somewhat passive in her life. She describes herself as lacking the guidance of a mother, as her mother died, and in many ways lacking the love of her father, who, after her mother's death, remains mostly silent. For this reason, she is left to find her own way.
The book begins with Natalia's courtship by Quimet, her eventual husband. The entire episode is wonderfully wrought - Natalia is very naive and pretty much accepts whatever Quimet does (and he's not always the nicest guy).
Natalia lives through the war, and the book does an amazing job of conveying what we today would term "post-traumatic stress disorder." After starving and living in fear, Natalia is never really the same. But of course, like many, she doesn't understand what she feels and, in fact, makes no attempt to understand. And that is the power of book - it shows us what she feels, it is not explicit, it arouses the emotion and leaves you powerfully affected.
Hugging a dove.......2006-04-14
Incredibly tender and sweet story. Beautifully written. I grew up in Gr?cia and reading the book brings me back there more directly than a charter flight (I've been living abroad for 11 years). It brings me back to Gr?cia to give "la Colometa" a big hug.
P.S.: it's shocking Amazon give the title in Spanish rather than the original title in Catalan- it makes as much sense as giving the title in Chinese.
La Plaça del Diamant.......2003-05-10
In my opinion, this is one of the most tender and at the same time hard book written in the 20th century in Catalonia. It mixes love, passion, deep feelings among one of the most difficults times that we Catalans have lived and we still live: the represion in all senses of the Spanish Kingdom.
I would like to suggest to Amanzon, a shop that sells culture, to respect the Catalan culture and not to translate the Catalan book titles into Spanish. The title of this book is "La Plaça del Diamant" (Catalan) and not "La Plaza del Diamante" (Spanish) I am absolutly sure that Merce Rodoreda, a woman who lived the repression on the Spanish for writing, thinking and expressing herself as a Catalan, would appreciate a lot that you keep her titles as they are in bweten brackets: in Catalan.

Years ago, Joe Connally married Olivia Jones because it was the right thing to do. But when they lost the baby, there seemed to be no need to carry on the charade. Olivia put her broken heart on a shelf and set out to leave her past, and its pain, behind.
As an interior designer, Olivia is just beginning to maker her mark and has won the coveted job of restoring Mallenegua, a massive stone mansion situated on a private island off the coast of South Carolina. But unexpectedly she comes face-to-face with the husband she loved and lost -- the project architect is Joe Connally.
While the passion still lingers, so does the hurt and the fierce hostility of his scheming family, who will do anything to drive Olivia away. When strange things begin to happen at the old mansion, Olivia is drawn into a deadly scheme that could ultimately cost her her life.
Customer Reviews:
Romance with a splash of suspense.......2006-06-12
Atlanta-based interior designer Olivia Jones has not returned to her Savannah roots since divorcing the only man she has ever loved - Joe Connolly. The daughter of the housekeeper for Joe's wealthy family, they divorced when she was 19, after losing their child. Savannah society as it was, both families were against the marriage from the start (his thought she trapped him; hers thought she was veering too far from her station), and did everything to tear them apart. When she is invited to bid on a remote mansion's historic preservation, she is shocked to discover that Joe is the architect in charge. She offers to decline putting in her bid, but Joe knows it is a chance of a lifetime and assures her that he can be impartial.
It has been 14 long years since Joe laid eyes on Olivia, and all the old feelings have rushed back to him. He still has a torch for her, and when she is chosen as the interior designer, wonders if he can in fact remain keep his true feelings hidden. As the two spend more time together, it is apparent that they are still in love with each other, and victims of a scheming matriarch, Hell-bent on keeping up appearances in the old south.
Mallenegua is an ethereal island fortress, and is rumored to be haunted. When Olivia starts seeing things, she wonders if she has lost her marbles, but as strange things start happening around the house, it is obvious that something sinister is afloat and not just Joe's mother.
Not a fan of paranormal storylines, this one was actually bearable. This light suspenseful drama will keep you hooked with the chemistry of Olivia and Joe - but communication is not their forte.
Gets the heart rate going!.......2005-10-16
Ginna Gray is a new author for me. This was the first book of hers I tried and will automatically buy her books in the future. A suspenseful setting on an island....no way to escape. What more can you ask for. Try this book; you'll definitely get hooked!
A Fair Romance..........2005-08-08
When the owners of AdCo Enterprises, Joe Conally and his partner, Reese Addison contract the interior design services of Olivia Jones for their most recent project, everyone finds themselves in above their heads.
First, the Victorian summer cottage that is to be renovated, Mallenegua is located on Mallen island. Ginna Gray writes: "Though there were those who claimed that Savannah was the most haunted city in the United States, and locals were proud of their ghosts, that didn't hold true for Mallenegua." So, not only is the place reputed to be haunted, but the history of its owners is enough to make anyone nervous. Apparently, just after the Civil War, Theobald Mallen showed up in Savannah and tried to outdo the Vanderbilt's estate, Biltmore by building Mallenegua. It was also an open secret that Mallen's business was anything but legitimate: "At the time, the citizens of Savannah believed, and the old guard still swore that it was true, that Mallen Shipping Lines had merely been a cover for Theobald's true business--smuggling pirated and illegal goods into the country, and that he wasn't particular about what they were."
And that brings us to the ship shod mystery/thriller aspect of PALE MOON RISING. The story is this: Theobald Mallen's step-great-great-grandson is trying to carry on the family business. Only this time, the smuggled goods of choice are heroine and cocaine (it would have been nice if the effects of this smuggling had been discussed with respect to its effect on the town, even peripherally, so that the reader could accept this story as not being completely from left field). When this distant Mallen relative finds that the rightful owner of Mallenegua has sold the place, leaving him without a place to store his latest shipment, he does what anyone would do--dress up in early 19th Century costumes (just like old Theo did) and pretends to be a ghost. This is right out of Scooby Doo! This storyline does not hold up or maintain the reader's interest with the scattering of threatening notes and 'ghost sightings,' which Gray seems to have thrown in as a gimmick.
Second, Olivia Jones used to be Olivia Conally. Yup, you guessed it: she is Joe Conally's ex-wife. In the deep South, they have their own caste society and many years ago, when Joe was at the top and Olivia was clearly at the bottom the fates conspired to bring them together. Then Joe's mother conspired to pull them apart. The Mallenegua project brings these star-crossed lovers together again, but for my taste, there isn't much loving to be had. Too much time is spent rehashing Mother Conally's problem with their relationship and the presently non-existent class gap. It's not like Olivia is scrubbing floors or something, but you could never tell the way this book gets going bemoaning their incredible differences.
And finally, even though Gray's description of furniture and rooms show either a clear interest in or detailed research of antiques/period pieces (maybe both), it can get a little tedious. I think she should have focused more on clearing up issues between Olivia and Joe, so that they could have more romance and happiness and forward progress in this book. It was too long to have so little happen.
Not What I Expected.
Expected better from this author........2004-10-16
I could not wait to get this book and it started great but then it got so that I could not even finish it. Which says a lot because usually I stick them out. It started to be bad when they went on their first date and conceived the child. We know why Olivia did it but we never knew why Joe did it. It was never explained (she even said that he never noticed her while growing up - then why would he just make love to her on a first date?) Does not seem like hero material to me. Did he just take what was offered? Maybe it was revealed later (but I did not read on) It was very predictable (mother did not like daughter-in law and behaved typically) Also there were too many obstacles and none was developed. The ghost, the sister, the mother, the mother-in law, great great etc grandson of the ghost. Too many things happening to Olivia for one to keep track of. Anyway, given the fact that I don't write (I only read) I commend the effort but I was a little disappointed. It could have been a great story.

Customer Reviews:
Gripping read.......2005-11-18
Scott Perdue has put together an absolutely gripping thriller that is highly realistic. His grasp of the big picture and the details of modern Air Force warfare is superb, as it should be given his background, and he communicates it well in the context of a story with characters that we care about. I enjoyed it immensely and read it every spare moment that I had available.
Quite a page-turner!.......2005-02-22
If you have an interest in military aviation, national security, or action and adventure, I think you'll find that this book is a great read. The pace accelerates as you near the conclusion, so when you get to the last few chapters, my suggestion is that you set aside a block of uninterrupted time to finish it. (I was pretty annoyed when I got interrupted during the best parts!) The military has a huge number of acronyms, and Scott Perdue has included a helpful glossary and a FAQ on his website to help those of us who want to know what it all means. After reading about the coordination of military services and forces, I appreciate even more fully how complex the modern battleground is.
Can't put it down!.......2005-01-24
Wow!! This book is great! I couldn't put it down. Scott Perdue has a terrific talent for making military and intelligence operations understandable, exciting and thrilling. You'll love the way his characters give the Afghanistan Taliban what they deserve-death and destruction. How much is fact and how much is fiction? A must read.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Five Stars.......2007-08-06
The last great book in the Young Jedi Knights at least in my opinion the Jedi are sent to destroy the plague warehouse before the Diversity Alliance can use it to destroy all the humans. It was very intense, on the edge of your seats all the way to the last page. I was very surprised and a little saddened by how it ended. It was completely unexpected. Even thought there's three more books written in the YJK series I didn't really like them at all there was just something off about them I can't really place it. For me this is the last time that I truly like Jaina and Jacen. The Jedi twins in the New Jedi Knights just seem so completely different from the ones in this series that I never felt any connection to Jaina or Jacen as I do in these Young Jedi Knights.
This book ROCKS!!!.......2004-05-09
This the second best book in the series and I really like it!One of the best things is how Boba Fett mows down the Divirsity Alliance troops! I'll try not to give much more away exept that I think it's high time we had some romance in the series! I just think that Zekk should have kissed Jaina when he had a chance! I think it's sad that Raynar's dad died after all he went through to hide the plauge from Noala Tarkona.
What a good book........2002-02-04
I am a fan of star wars espesially the books. This set of books is one of the best I've read so far.I like them all but I think the best part in this one is the surprise ending wich is very funny. But I think they should be read in order.Other wise your in the dark for have the book! But these books are my favorit yet.Thank you for your time.
An excellent conclusion to the second storyline in the saga.......2001-01-08
Since I am rereading this entire series for the first time in several years I was surprised to realize I remembered almost nothing about this book despite the fact that it is the climax of the series. This does not however, in any way imply a lack of excitment. In fact it was solidly gripping from page one right to the end. This book was the last in the second cycle of Young Jedi Knights novels, and it was one of the best. It basically takes up right where the previous book left off, with the kids, now fully healed, preparing to meet with the senet to discuss the possible threat the Diversity Alliance may be posing to all human life in the galaxy. Meanwhile Zekk goes to find Bornan Thul and takes Raynar with him because Raynar is Bornan's son and he would be more likely to trust him if he is with him. They discover the human plague secret so Leia sends them (Zekk, Bornan, Raynar, Jacen, Jaina, Lowie, and Tenel Ka) on a mission to go and try to destroy the plague storehouse before the Diversity Aliance can get to it and destroy all human's with it. The rest of the book is an intense account of their adventures trying to accomplish this goal, but as to whether they succeed or not, well, you'll just have to read the book, because I'm not telling! I will say though, that it has several unexpected twists, one of which is very sad. One of the few problems with this book is that Leia would knowingly send her children on such a dangerous mission. Despite the fact that they are almost full Jedi Knights, that doesn't change the fact that they are her children, and I don't believe any parent would willingly send their child into such mortal danger. My parants definitely wouldn't! I must admit, I am getting slightly less resentful of all these irritating little couples that are forming (Jacen and Tenel Ka, Jaina and Zekk, Lowie and Raaba, and of course Lusa and Raynar). Jacen and Tenal Ka are funny and interesting, and I have no objections to them liking each other, and Lowie and Raaba are plausible, though boring. Jaina and Zekk are hugely boring though, and Lusa and Raynar are completly implausible. Even so, this was not overpoweringly bad, so I guess I really have nothing to complain about really. In short, this is an excellent series of Star Wars books that are better even then some regular books I've read, and certainly more exciting.
Worthy of the Emperor himself.......2000-09-04
I really like this book. I have read many Star Wars books and this was one of the best. I thought the ending was very good and heart wrenchig. Anderson, in my opinion, is one of the 2 best Star Wars Authors there are. The other being Zahn but thats beside the point.

If you buy just one book on witchcraft..........2007-09-10
...Let this be the one you buy.
You may have heard the joke, "What do you call a fourth-degree witch?" The answer: "A Buddhist."
Well, those of us who read and PRACTICE this book can grow for a lifetime in this deeply spiritual tradition of the Craft.
As someone who is lucky enough to be taking classes with the author, I can honestly say that Thorn is the real deal. She practices what she writes; she Knows whereof she speaks; and she has the intelligence, experience, and power I believe we all seek in teachers. (She also doesn't take herself too seriously -- another hallmark of a truly great teacher.)
With this book and personal commitment, anyone can tap into the endlessly meaningful practice Thorn lays out in rich and clearly-explained detail.
Also, there's a DVD that Thorn created that I find very helpful. Unfortunately, (at least at the time of this writing) they don't offer it on Amazon, but if you Google Devotional Dance and Thorn's name, you'll find it....
Evolutionary Witchcraft.......2007-08-27
After learning the basics of circle casting and herbal correspondence, many Witches seek a deeper understanding of magick and inner working. Enter "Evolutionary Witchcraft", a revolutionary guide to expanded humanity and divinity. As stated in the introduction, the goal of "Evolutionary Witchcraft" is to "reach for the stars, dance with the Gods, and make love to the beauty of the earth...[to] expand our capacity to be human and learn what it means to be fey workers-bringing the edges into center and opening up new worlds in the process."
"Evolutionary Witchcraft" is composed of 10 chapters that teach the basics of Feri Witchcraft. The first two chapters introduce basic Feri techniques such as casting a Feri circle and aligning one's triple soul. The proceeding chapters, each focusing on a ceremonial direction, address empowerment, magick, and personal healing. Included are unique Feri practices and concepts such as the Iron Pentacle, the Warrior Ethic, and the Black Heart of Innocence. It is designed to be read once, then studied over a ten month period.
Poetic, powerful, and wise, "Evolutionary Witchcraft" is a book for anyone truly devoted to spiritual progression. Practical exercises, meditations, and rituals allow the reader to tap into innate divinity and manifest magick in everyday life. It is an invitation to experience the beauty and dangers of Feri magick, for as Thorn teaches, anything truly worthwhile is dangerous.
"Evolutionary Witchcraft" is a work of mystery and power. It will push your boundaries and expand your knowledge and perception of the Universe. It is slated to be a classic. Thorn's compassion, experience, and deep commitment as a Priestess can be seen on every page. Read it and be inspired!

A spiritual guide to magic.......2007-04-06
Evolutionary Witchcraft

Penguin books
302 pages
I found this book to be very intriguing because it provides a mystical perspective to magic and this perspective is based off a western system of magic as opposed to an Eastern system. It does have some parallels with Eastern mysticism, but is also more practical oriented. While I didn't agree with all of Coyle's points, I did find that I enjoyed her perspectives and approaches and felt like I received a good understanding of what informs her approach to Feri.
I liked her focus on the on the directions and elements associated with each direction as well as the different types of pentalces such as the iron and pearl pentacles. I also found that the exercises were valuable for creating a shift in thinking on how magic could be approached.
I think, in the end, what I most liked is the overall spirituality of behind the concepts. Here is a person who has explored her spirituality and then shared it with others and it really shows in this book. A refreshing change from a lot of the other books out there.

Right-on Feri Work.......2007-01-27
This book is a magnificient presentation of very specific Feri lore and practices. The clear and abundant focus is self-transformation, clarity and magick. Thanks and Blessings to Thorn Coyle for making this information available to the community at large.
