Jostein Gaarder had an unlikely international success with Sophie's World, a novelized exploration of western philosophy through the eyes of a young girl. This is an earlier work, translated from the Norwegian by Sarah Jane Hails. This fable-like story dabbles in philosophy too, though more lightly. It tells of a Norwegian boy traveling across Europe with his calm and reflective father in search of his long lost mother. The boy finds a tiny manuscript that reveals the secret of a magic deck of cards that can tell the future.

A Modern Fairy Tale.......2007-01-13
A cross of Alice In Wonderland and ancient fairytales, I found this book hard to put down after turning page after page. It ranks up there with the others - The Little Prince, The Alchemist...
The Sticky Bun Mystery.......2007-01-03
Full of descriptive visuals, engaging concepts, soda and sticky buns, 'The Solitaire Mystery' is a page turner!
As the title indicates, the fifty-two card deck (including one Joker, of course!) is the vehicle for this story.
I found all Hans Thomas (the main character), his father, his fashion model mother, and all of the other characters easy to relate to, and any loose ends of the intricate plot are tied up neatly by the end of the book.
A beautiful, heartwarming story of redemption through the ages.......2006-05-11
A wonderful story to read aloud, as well.
BUT HOW?.......2006-05-09
The story is wonderful and keeps the reader wonder to the last page of the story.
Even at the very end there is a small complex that rise, eventually everything get solved but with open questions.
For myself, the only question left to answer is, How come that Thomas' grandfather knows that Thomas is his grandson at the same time the grandson realises that?
I mean the grandfather was the one who wrote the story and he added the last bit after forgetting German, but he still knew about his grandson from Joker's note before Thomas got to read it!
I had so much fun reading this!.......2005-09-23
Another fantastic book from Jostein Gaarder. It has some profound ideas disguised as light reading. I really identified with characters in both stories -- the island reminded me of the people I have to deal with on a daily basis! It certainly prompts you to examine the choices you make, and those of the people around you. Life can be more than just going through the actions to achieve some end. Also, it's not a terrible thing to question what's going on around you, though it may be frustrating. That's what I like about Jostein Gaarder's novels: they present some extremely thought-provoking questions in an extremely imaginative and entertaining way. I've recommended this book to many people, and they all loved it!

The warrior died at her feet, his blood running out of the cave entrance and mingling with the waterfall. With his last breath he cursed the woman -- told her that her spirit would remain chained in the cave forever until a child was created and born there . . .
So goes the ancient legend of the Chained Lady and the curse that bound her throughout the ages -- until destiny brings Diana Prentice and Colby Savagar together. Suddenly, they are both haunted by dreams that link past and present, while their waking hours are filled with danger. But it is only when Colby, Diana's modern-day warrior, learns to love can these dark forces be vanquished. Only then can Diana set the Chained Lady free . . .
Customer Reviews:
Best JAK (under any of her names).......2006-05-24
I'll start out by saying that I like Jayne Ann Krentz, but I am NOT a big fan of her earlier books (esp. those written as Stephanie James). A Shared Dream was initially published in two parts in 1988, but it definitely doesn't fit the pattern of other works of that period. In fact, A Shared Dream may be the best book JAK has written to date under any name, and I absolutely loved it.
Diana Prentice is a thirty-four year old accountant. She has a meticulous nature, is intelligent, and is very good at her job. She is therefore surprised and disappointed when she's passed over for promotion at the firm of Carruthers and Yale. She takes time off and retreats to a rental cottage in tiny, quiet Fulbrook Corners while she thinks about her future.
Her temporary neighbor is horror writer Colby Savagar, who is staying at his late Aunt Jesse's cottage. In his youth, Colby was the local wild boy who was inexpertly raised by the eccentric Jesse. The young Colby attracted the attention of the local "princess," Cynthia Fulbrook, who saw him as an interesting counterpoint to her privileged, but confining, life. When Cynthia became pregnant, she and Colby got married against the wishes of her parents. Soon, tho, the strain was too much for Cynthia and, leaving her newborn, Brandon, with Colby, she headed back to Fulbrook Corners. Unfortunately, she was killed in an accident on the return trip. After a stint in the army and working construction, Colby eventually became a successful writer. He's not particularly happy to be back in Fulbrook Corners now and Margaret Fulbrook, who blames Colby for the loss of her daughter, makes sure he knows just how unwelcome he is.
Colby has incentive to stay in Fulbrook Corners, tho. He wants Diana Prentice. Initially, the last thing on the reserved Diana's mind is romance, but they soon become involved in a torrid affair. An incautious interlude results in pregnancy, and Colby insists they marry to raise the child in a stable environment. The culminating event of many romances is the big bedroom scene or the wedding. Since both are dealt with pretty early in the book, a good deal of time is devoted to showing how two mature adults deal with unexpectedly sharing their lives, and how Diana deals with her decidedly ambivalent feelings about childbirth and motherhood.
There were a number of subplots in the book that were well done and moved the story forward. I was especially impressed by the portrayal of a grownup Brandon and his relationships with Colby, his girlfriend, his irascible grandmother, and even Diana. Colby did such a good job of raising Brandon that you know he'll be a good father to Diana's baby. (Look for a humorous scene involving Brandon's wedding gift to his father.)
The shared dream of the title refers to a recurring dream that Colby has had for years about the Chained Lady Falls in Fulbrook Corners. Local legend told of an ancient warrior who chained his woman in the cave behind the falls until she would bear him a child. Instead, the chained woman mortally wounded the warrior, which also resulted in her own death alone in the cave. Her spirit was doomed to remain bound there until events foretold in the legend would set her free. Diana begins to have similar dreams as Colby, which then become increasingly intense for both as the delivery date nears. To be honest, I wasn't initially sure where this dream thread was going, or if it would become irritating, but it was handled well. There was yet another subplot involving threats to Diana that mirrored scenes from Colby's writing that eventually resulted in the resolution of the chained lady legend.
Of all the things I liked about this book, I have to say that the portrayal of Specter, Diana's dog, ranks right up there at the top. Specter is intelligent, loyal, brave, and hilarious. Throughout the book, he is protective of Diana and engages in a sometimes not so subtle contest of wills with Colby to determine who will be "top dog." It's a funny twist on the typical "alpha males" in romance novels.
There was just so much going on in this book and it was all expertly handled by JAK. The characters were almost (almost) universally complex and true to life. There were a lot of plot lines which were convincingly woven together, and the pacing was excellent. This book had it all--great story, characters you can care about, real-life (but not boring) issues, sex/sensuality, and humor. I was amazed when I first read this book a couple of weeks ago. I've already read it a second time, and will surely read it many more times. Maybe this book wasn't everyone's cup of tea (based on some of the other reviews), but it really hit the spot for me!
(Note: Another reviewer mentioned the typos that are rife throughout this book. My rating didn't reflect this since it's more a fault of the editor/publisher than the author; however, it was annoying and often distracted from the flow of the book. Very sloppy, indeed.)
Enjoyable.......2003-05-15
This is a 1988 book that orginally came out as 'Dreams Part I' & 'Dreams Part II'. It was an ok read. Spectors personality & coflict of interest with Colby was fun through out the book.
The situations with teenagers I could totally relate to (having 3 raised & 1 to go!). Colby really screwed up in Ch 10 & I think Diana should have held out a little longer to get his attention to his very one-sided attitude. For being the "amazon business woman" that she was suppose to be, she sure let up on the fact that he was still blaming her for something she didn't set up.
The father-son chat at the wedding was really a crack-up! Brandon definitely got some points in there! I loved that.
However, the book goes over & over & over the same problems - mainly about Diana's personality hang ups. The book was overly long due to this. I found myself skimming thru a lot of it about 2/3 of the way through, wishing they would just get on with it. The story itself was pretty ok, it was just too drawn out.
Read the book just to find out how she did it.......2002-05-26
The warrior died at her feet, his blood running out of the cave entrance and mingling with the waterfall. With his last breath he cursed the woman -- told her that her spirit would remain chained in the cave forever until a child was created and born there . . .
OK, so this doesn't sound like the best way to start a romance but really, it works out. However, you must keep something in the back of your mind: this book first came out in the 80's, and the character's behavior is time sensitive. She, Diana, is burnout due to sexual discrimination. While today's Diana would have successfully sued, those of us old enough to remember the 80's know at that time she would have lost. He, Colby, an author of horror stories has a firm aversion to marriage and in-laws, but with a strong commitment to his now grown son. The are both in the middle of nowhere for the summer. She to re-group and he to finish his next book (there is no mention of a laptop once, I told you: time sensitive).
To make this simple: Diana and Colby have the same dreams or past life memories. To end this and fulfil the legend of "Chained Lady Falls" a baby must be both conceived and born in cave behind the falls. As soon as I got to the legend, I was filled with dread: I just knew this was going to be hokey as death. I was dreading the next page. But, she did it, honestly! I recommend reading this book just to see how Ms. Krentz pulled it off. I was so sure it would be a sappy ending-but is was good! It is a love story, so they are, of course, happy ever after, but the story makes sense and is logical! The fact that the romance and sex are really good helps too, but for me that fact she got away with ending the story without huge jumps into silly is worth the price of the book alone.
Disappointed.......2001-12-21
Hard to finish - sadly. I wait with held breath for each new Jayne Ann Krentz book to appear. And then I found this one. I still haven't finished it - unfortunately it had put me off reading for awhile. Quick - someone hand me the new Amanda Quick novel!
I normally like JAK.......2001-12-19
but this book was the worst. Just horrible writing, no engaging characters, etc. Really have nothing positive to say about this book.

Book Description
Shared Dreams brings to life the impressive, surprising, and long-neglected history of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s efforts in support of the Jewish community.
At critical moments in the life of the American Jewish community, of Israel and of the plight of Soviet Jews, Martin Luther King, Jr. stepped in as an advocate to speak out for the human and civil rights of Jews. His efforts to support world Jewry-within the constraints of his primary role in the civil rights movement-cannot be forgotten. Indeed, they must be remembered.
Rabbi Marc Schneier presents the full story of Dr. King's involvement with the Jewish community. With the use of previously unpublished material and interviews with those who marched at Dr. King's side, the long-neglected story of mutual support and cooperation between Dr. King and the Jewish community is brought to life.
It is a story that will shed new light on the commitment and the relationship between the Jewish and African American communities as they have struggled together to fight for justice and civil rights for our nation. Even more, it is a story that encourages all of us-people of all faiths, all backgrounds-to continue to fight for justice in our world.

Good examination into an overlooked history.......2002-12-09
The release of this book, which is a well-documented look at the interesting relationship between Martin Luther King and American Jews, is quite timely and appropriate. In these early days of the millennium, Black-Jewish relationships seem to currently be on the mend from the low points of the 1990s, and books like this may help in the recovery process. Also quite well written with some little known information and rarely-read speechs by MLK on Black-Jewish realtions.
A timely history.......2000-01-18
You mean blacks and Jews did not all walk hand-in-hand during the Fifties and Sixties, even though nearly 70% of white Freedom Riders were Jewish? You mean not everyone prayed with their feet like Rabbi Heschel in Selma? You're telling me that president of the UAHC, leaders in social action, was forced by his members to withdraw an invitation to King to speak at the group's 1959 convention in Miami? Did the Reverend James Bevel, a leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Selma, Ala., actually wear a kippah (freedom beanie) at his rallies and it protected him from the sheriffs? In this book, Rabbi Schneir tells us the story of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King's support for human and civil rights for Jews, his use of the Jewish experience in his speeches, and his call for the Baptists to stop trying to convert Jews. He also tells us the story of Jewish avid support of and reluctance to support King's movement. Rabbi Schneir, the son of Rabbi Arthur Schneir of Manhattan's Park East Synagogue, is a rabbi, founding rabbi of the West Hampton Synagogue, planner of the Palm Beach Synagogue, force behind a new cross-denominational rabbinical assembly, leader of the New York Board of Rabbis, President of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, and member of the NAACP. Schneier is quite frank, and includes the wariness of some supporters of the far-left-wing Jews in King's entourage. He also discusses King's attitudes toward Israel, Zionism, militarism and the Six Day War. By the way, while King may have been dis-invited to a convention in 1959, by 1968, when King spoke at the Conservative Rabbinical Assembly's convention, he was greeted by over a thousand rabbis singing "We Shall Overcome" in Hebrew. King was planning to join Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel's family for a Pesach seder in 1968, but was assassinated before he could.

Compelling new vision of a major period in history, and the remarkable woman who was part of it.
Customer Reviews:
approach it with an open mind.......2002-01-21
When this book first appeared in bookstores there was complete silence in the media. When I read it on the bus I got so many dissaproving looks that I had to remove the dustcover. This is an important memoir that tells a previously hidden part of the history of the Civil Rights movement. As for MLK's sex life the details mentioned in this well written book have already been hinted at in Ralph Abernathy's memoir years ago.
As for GDP herself, I have commend her for not trying to sugar coat the story. She comes off as a willful, selfish woman and doesn't seem to mind it as long as the true story is told.
More National Enquirer than a historical text.......2001-07-21
Back around 1990 Ralph Abernathy was falsely accused of writng a book that dwelled on Dr. King's sex life. Abernathy's book (And the Walls Came Tumbling Down) was a great memoir, THIS is the trashy book that should've gone down in infamy. This "book" is filled with sleazy details not only about Dr. King but other aspects of Ms. Powers personal life. Hold on to your stomachs, folks. You will want to sterilize your hands after reading this garbage.

Book Description
A guide for personal exploration of the path to the divine feminine and the spiritual power of women.
• Reveals the essential role of women in creating and maintaining the psychic/energetic/emotional landscape of society.
• Explores feminine roles and the archetypal model of the Great Goddess from both Eastern and Western spiritual traditions.
• Includes exercises, meditations, and visualizations drawn from ancient techniques to assist women with their spiritual awakening and self-realization.
The Path of the Priestess takes readers on a journey deep into the heart of the feminine experience. It describes the author's years of first-hand experience in the ancient arts of Tantra, Dzogchen, and Indian and Egyptian temple dance and healing, as well as her research into the feminine principle in the mystic teachings of the Alchemists, Hebrew Kabbalists, and Christian Gnostics.
Beginning with an analysis of the basic issues and frustrations inherent in contemporary society's conditioning of and expectations for women, readers travel back in time to the age of the great temples, schools, and sacred societies in which women still held and transmitted the spiritual light that nourished all of civilization. Through its mythic and historic tales, descriptions of sacred ritual practices, and teachings on the Goddess traditions, The Path of the Priestess provides contemporary women with the means to enter this time-honored path. In keeping with the experientially based teaching methods of these traditions, it also offers exercises and visualizations designed to align women with the powerful, sensuous, and loving energies of the most profound feminine role model that shaped and preserved culture and society--the Great Goddess.
Customer Reviews:
A crucial guidebook for dancers.......2004-02-17
I strongly recommend this book to all my dance students and all the members of my dance troupe! Dancers interested in channeling goddess energy will be thrilled to find a very readable story of how dance and spirituality can be explored together. I found the exercises profound -- they helped me explore how movement and gesture can help me feel, in my body, the divine energies of compassion, sensuality and strength, and how to convey these feelings to others. I always intuitively sensed that dance activates sacred energies -- Sharon's amazing scholarship and years of dancing has given her valuable insights and experience which confirm this. What a gem!
Mind Expanding and Boundless!.......2003-05-23
What a beautiful and eye opening homage to womankind from a spiritual seeker who has traveled such a great distance from her beginnings as an American feminist of the sixties. In the first chapter she describes her powerful initiation by a woman teacher ( Sitara Devi) into the ancient art of Indian temple dance, Hindu Tantra and women's mysteries. . ( I was pleased to see the photographs of Sharron with her teachers. I have read too many books about
spiritual seekers or anthropologists and the revelations they have received from their teachers without ever seeing an image of these teachers. Even though I have enjoyed these books I have often wondered whether the teachers were fictional
characters.)
From that point on, in the first section of the book she journeys into the deep realms of meditation, healing and visionary experience as she seeks out the ancient woman's mysteries in the traditions of Tibetan Tantra, Dzogchen,
Egyptian mysticism, Gnosticism and Kabbalah. As a woman seeking my own path to inner knowing, I found these chapters to be extremely beneficial and enlightening. Her experiences and insights into working with one's emotions, the way in
which she describes how painful experiences in childhood can impact both the physical body and its energy field and her search to find and relate paths to healing were particularly inspiring to me. I was also touched by the respect she
shows for her teachers and the humility she demonstrates as a seeker on the path.
As I continued to read, I was impressed with the courage she has in speaking out about the social, cultural and political issues that plague so many of us these days. Taking an ancient approach that values women in all their fullness as spiritual teachers, healers, mediators (today known as political activists
and politicians) and caretakers of our planet, she gave me a new and empowered view of my potential as a woman. Her vivid exercises designed to nspire ferocity in the face of danger, self-confidence and determination, joy, passion,
and mystery, love, humility and rapture have helped me to feel free to express the full range of my emotions. In addition, they have given me new strength to deal with the issues that plague me in my relationships with both men and
women. Her call for women to come together as they did in the days of old to shed the imprints of the patriarchy and create a more balanced, harmonious world is so exciting. I, like Sharron, feel the sadness and horror of the current
socio-political atmosphere. I too care about issues such as the negative and disturbing media induced visions of women, the destruction of our environment and the manner in which we and our children, have become experimental subjects
for the mind and body altering drugs of the pharmaceutical industry.
As an alternative to the limited visions of women offered to us by the media, in the last three chapters she offers myths, stories and meditations on the many manifestations of the Great Goddess who she describes as the most profound female role model to shape society. Stories such as the way the Hindu Goddess
Durga is created to fearlessly battle with and become victorious over our inner and outer demons gives us courage. Innana, who "revels in the fullness of her sensuous expression" presents a new view of sexual freedom. . Isis the
Egyptian goddess who is the great mother of Alchemy and the Western spiritual tradition shows us the great healing power that we all contain. These and her stories of female spiritual seekers such as Mirabai of India, Machig Lapdron of
Tibet, Mary Magdalene and Sharron's own powerful teacher Sitara Devi who fought throughout her life to transcend the limitations imposed upon her as a woman by modern Indian society have shown me that even though to some the world may
appear limited the only true limitations placed upon me are those created within the dark recesses of my own mind.
An inspirational tome of transcendental spirituality.......2003-04-08
The Path Of The Priestess: A Guidebook For Awakening The Divine Feminine by mythologist and metaphysician Sharron Rose is an impressive and "user friendly" spiritual guidebook of exercises and visualizations to understanding the metaphysical essence of being female. From exploring the divine roles of women, to the mysticism taught in traditions of Hebrew Kabbalists, Christian Gnostics, alchemists, and more, The Path Of The Priestess is an inspirational tome of transcendental spirituality embracing the role model of the Great Goddess. The Path Of The Priestess is strongly recommended reading for anyone seeking to understand the feminine experience as spiritual teachers, visionaries, peacekeepers, and archetypal models of the Great Goddess in Eastern and Western spiritual traditions.
A profound and joyous path for every woman.......2003-03-02
The Path of the Priestess is a profound and potent guidebook for women of the twenty first century. After reading it I realized that it is actually three books in one. Part one, which documents Ms. Rose's personal quest for the teachings and practices of woman's mysteries among the sacred societies of India, Tibet, Egypt and Alchemical Europe was reminiscent for me of writers such as Lynn Andrews and Carlos Casteneda. However, in this book, Ms. Rose not only sweeps you along with her on a magical journey into the trials and tribulations of an American seeker but also shows you the deep respect and reverence for woman and the Goddess as transmitted to her by the teachers and teachings she encounters. I also enjoyed the photographs of her together with these teachers.
From this impressive journey, in chapters five and six, she offers a fascinating commentary on the history of humanity and particularly the conditioning of women. In these two chapters she opens our eyes to the underlying motivation behind the repressive and controlling nature of the patriarchal forces that have increasingly dominated our lives. In addition she offers us a clear and vital alternative in which we as women can gain the strength and self-esteem to face up to these forces. At the same time she shows us how to work towards a more loving, peaceful and harmonious way of living. Chapter Six, Lifting the Veil from the Face of Modernity in which she contrasts the imprinting of women in contemporary society with that of these sacred societies is especially moving, perceptive and provocative. Her analysis of the goals, successes and failures of the feminist movement, gave me new insight into the ways in which we have been manipulated by the media. These two well-documented chapters recalled for me the nature of the work of scholars and writers such as Riane Eisler, Naomi Wolf and Marija Gimbutas. But in this book, Ms. Rose as an initiate into and practitioner of the ancient teachings offers us even greater insight into the essential roles of women.
As a woman who has always been sensitive to energy and emotion, I was particularly affected by her description of woman's role as the keepers of the psychic-energetic-emotional landscape of society. Honestly, after reading these chapters I began to see myself, and the ways in which I have been taught to interact with the world in a new way.
I found the last three chapters to be extremely beneficial. Reading the myths and stories of the Goddesses gave me a deeper understanding of the many facets of woman. The exercises that follow are written in a lush, poetic language that deeply touched me. After reading the book I purchased the Awakening the Feminine video series tapes in which Ms. Rose transmits the teachings and exercises found in these three chapters. I found these tapes to be extremely enriching and beneficial as well. I thank Sharron Rose for opening the door for me to a unique and extraordinary vision of the power, grace and majesty of womankind.
The Path of the Priestess: A Guidebook for Awakening the Div.......2003-02-27
Sharron's book is truly amazing. I could not put this book down. This book has profoundly affected my life. I felt like I was on the priestess journey with her as she travels all over globe. If you are ready to remember who you are and reclaim your divine priestess this book is a hands on guidebook to take you back home to yourself. Something very magical occurred for me while reading her book . . . It woke up my true inner source of divine feminine energy and since that day I have been manifesting and attracting the most spectacular events and things into my life. I'm extremely grateful to Sharron for having written this very important book. I believe our feminine essence is what is required for us to make a shift in our current world events. After reading this compelling and significant book, I found myself not being willing to accept the current circumstances as my reality and a new gentle authentic power has emerged.
I have recommended this book to my clients and everyone of them is experiencing similar breakthroughs. This is a must read!
