Book Description
In The Lost Upland, award-winning poet W. S. Merwin explores his intimate knowledge of the people and the countryside in what is the home of the Lascaux caves, an ancient part of southwestern France. In three narratives of small-town life, Merwin shows with unmatched poetic and narrative power how the past is still palpably present. These stories offer the reader a brilliantly evocative and loving portrayal of the French country people and their way of life.

Book Description
Texas rancher Jason Donovan was known for his temper, his brooding nature and his deep distrust of women. No one at the Diamond Spur ranch could stand his moods -- except Kate Whitman.
Kate was young and inexperienced, but she knew that Jason was the only man for her. She wanted him more than anything, but he offered her only brotherly protection -- until the day she discovered that Jason's desire was as strong as her own.
But Jason was not interested in commitment, or marriage, and especially not love. So Kate pursued another fantasy -- becoming a successfl New York fashion designer. But just when it seemed that her fairy tale was coming true, fate brought her back to Texas. To Jason. And to a dream that she'd almost abandoned . . .

Diamond Spur - A Keeper!.......2007-05-30
In Diamond Spur Diana Palmer has proven herself to be a master storyteller! The characters were so real, I felt as though I went through their problems right along with them. In fact, it made me cry at one point and it takes a lot to do that! I highly recommend this to any Palmer fans.
Horrible...........2007-02-10
Not a good one by Diana Palmer...it really dissapointed me, and the worst part is that Diana Palmer is so repetitive in her stories. Ive read more than 40 books by her and about 35 of them are exactly the same.
Story as usual is about a young woman who is in love with an unattainable man almost double her age. Due to the man not wanting marriage because of his horrible childhood, the woman is bound to be miserable until the last 2 pages of the book.
Incredibly annoying characters in this book. Kate is one of the weakest female characters that Diana Palmer has portrayed, she attempts to have pride but it backfires on her all the time. Shes trying to be strong but just looks ridiculous.
Kate's mom is even a bad character. Shes mentioned only for a couple of chapters and only to say that shes glad Kate is in love with Jason so that she can finally have financial security. Some wishes for her daughter.
Jason is also one of the worst characters Palmer has made. Hes incredibly selfish and it makes you want to pull your hairs out with the whole "he loves her but he cant bend enough or else he'll break and give in"...he doesnt "give in" until the last chapter...pathetic.
I actually would have liked it a lot more if the story would have been about Jason's brother Gene and his wife Cherry, cute couple, seemed to have more of a personality than the main characters.
Jason's mom was pretty weak too, and how weird that she was about 50 and Diana described her as if she were about 80 years old. Didnt like that either.
Overall, not a good story if you want to try getting into Diana Palmer's books.
luv it.......2005-10-29
I thought this book was the best. It wasn't my 1st book written by diana palmer but still it was really good. I thought the hero was a strong, passionate person and i thought the heroine was very innocent in the beginnning but at the end turned very strong and became more mature. luved this book.
totally recommend it!!
what a bummer............2005-05-31
I was on my way out of town and pick this book up on a whim as I breezed through a book store...I love western romance, but I had a hard time finishing this one!
I did'nt realize it was a reissue, and after checking other reveiws after I returned home..I can see now why this rancher was such a demanding man (I am glad times have changed!).
Anyway...this paperback was a waste of paper...I didn't care for the way Jason treated Kate and I felt it was borderline abusive and Kate just put up with it! Half of the book was spent describing what everyone was wearing, do you really need to know what someone has on everytime they enter the room? or when they light a cigarette? The romance was hard to find in this novel..at least the heart pounding kind I was looking for! I will be more careful when I grab a Diana Palmer book in the future..
Not what I expected.......2004-09-27
After reading the reviews on this book I was extremely hesitant to buying this novel. However, I bought it on a wim and absolutely loved it. I can not disagree more with the other reviews. Diana Palmer takes Kate and Jason through a whirl wind of emotional stir. Kate having always been looked at as his "little sister" caused Jason some serious life questions. An unexpected twist put them through more emotion then I have seen in most books. Granted he does smoke a lot, which is a huge turn off, however his flaws make up who he is. This book does a lot of repeat actions and arguments, however, I throughly enjoyed the emotional twister!

Customer Reviews:
Hiiisssss.......2007-07-17
This novel is fairly good with the art being quite realistic rather than the usual comic look. I think Batman was excellent and definately my choice out of the two heroes. I would have liked the Predators to have been more dangerous, but I won't spoil anything. As I said, a good novel!

This volume collects the four-issue Superman/Aliens II: Godwar mini-series, in which Superman faces the ferocity of the Aliens combined with the godlike might of the evil Darkseid! Will even the Man of Steel and his super-powered allies be enough to stop Darkseid's Apokolips-Aliens hybrids? And what will be the final fate of Orion, victimized by an alien face-hugger?
Customer Reviews:
By Big Barda's Bikini & Orion's Underwear.......2005-06-30
Superman is vacationing on New Genesis. Darkseid captures a spacecraft that passes too close to Apokalips. While Superman enjoys not having to rescue anyone, Darkseid discovers the aliens and hatches a plan against New Genesis.
Soon New Genesis is under attack from Parademons. As Superman and the New Gods fight them off, they are astounded when the attackers suddenly stop and aliens burst out of their chests. Superman goes into a rage while the New Gods try to stop the flood of aliens. Then Superman and Orion take the fight to Darkseid and the Alien queen.
I have never been a fan of the Darkseid or New Gods stories (they should have been wiped out in the Crisis) and this one is not much better. Since this is not an Elseworlds tale, there is not a lot of room for maneuvering in the plot. Needless to say it is a minor skirmish in the great war between the two worlds (as they all are). I was surprised at Superman's vacation attitude. It is not explained why he is there but he seems completely unconcerned about anything that mike be happening in his absence. There was also the gratuitous "Big Barda strolling in her Bikini" scene that was followed by Orion posing in his briefs.
I felt the Aliens were not handled well either. There is no menace, only one scene of stalking, and the resolution was unresolved. Barda got away from the aliens on New Genesis but were they stopped? No one bothered to check. Darkseid seemed very careless about breeding face-huggers and chest-bursters. There are scenes on Apokalips that shown many aliens have burst forth but the story does not account for any of them. All in all this was a disappointment.
Decent, but doesn't live up to the first crossover.......2004-01-18
Most crossover sequels never do live up to their predecessors, but as far as most DC/Dark Horse Crossovers have been as of late (completely abysmal), Superman/Aliens 2 is rather good.
Superman visits old friends on New Genesis, but a shadow of a threat looms in the form of Apokolips. Darkseid has somehow managed to get a hold of Aliens, and he sees the creatures as a means of permanently wiping out New Genesis. Testing the creatures on his own people first, Darkseid is satisfied with the results and launches a massive attack on New Genesis that fails miserably...or does it? Soon, the thousands of beaten Apokolips soldiers have Aliens rip from their chests, to Superman's familiar horror. Chaos ensues and the fate of New Genesis is in the hands of Superman and the New Gods.
This is a pretty good crossover...there are no ridiculous mutations or hybrids like in recent books. Unfortunately, the Aliens are made a mockery of by the New Gods...the Aliens do not really get the respect they deserve, as they are easily fended off and beaten in most encounters. The overall story itself serves as more development in the Apokolips vs. New Genesis storyline, but overall the Aliens factor in almost as a minor inconvenience rather than a horrifying threat.
It can't be expected of a sequel to live up to the predecessor in most crossovers, but Superman/Aliens 2 isn't a bad attempt. The first crossover is one of the best DC/DH ever pulled off, and it would be hard to top it. I enjoyed this comic and recommend it to any Superman/Alien fan, just don't expect the Aliens to do much.

Book Description
This edition includes a new foreword by James V. Schall, S.J.
Sertillanges asks in the preface of the 1934 edition of The Intellectual Life: "Do you want to do intellectual work?" He follows with the prescription: "Begin by creating within you a zone of silence, a habit of recollection, a will of renunciation and detachment which puts you entirely at the disposal of work; acquire that state of soul unburdened by desire and self-will which is the state of grace of the intellectual worker. Without that you will do nothing, at least nothing worth while."
First published in 1920, this classic has been repeatedly reprinted and continues to inspire and instruct young scholars.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely gorgeous book!.......2005-05-28
Still a very good book about:
Why (a lot) and how (a little bit) to become a
good thinker. Very inspiring.
The original French version is available for free online
(among others at www.inquisition.ca).
Cheers!
Stefan
Reflective.......2003-10-23
Originally published in French, the translator tells us in the preface that the book was widely distributed in France. The first chapter of the book, per se establishes the premise that the intellectual life is a calling from God, one that is sacred and to be held as a trust.
In the second chapter there is a section on the spirit of prayer, among other topics.
Chapter three develops the paradox of solitude and involvement with other people. An intellectual, as is the case with other creative individuals, does both.
Work is the topic for chapter four and the contexts include: continuity of work, work at night, mornings and evening, and moments of plenitude.
A creative scholar must be open to insights around him.
"Ideas emerge from facts; they also emerge from conversations, chance occurrences, theatres, visits, strolls, the most ordinary books" (p. 73).
The remainder of the book fleshes out this discussion of intellectual work.
A reader would leave this book a more thoughtful person from having been exposed to these ideas. I recommend spending time with this author.
research as a search for truth.......2001-09-04
I first read this book as an undergraduate and I have reread it several times over the years. I regard it as one of the most important books that I've read. Why? A. G. Sertillanges does more than provide advice about how to organize your life to have time to think and write, although he does that. He argues that research is a vocation to find the truth -- a great calling no matter how small one's own part. His suggestions for organizing your life follow from the seriousness of this vocation, advice that's far more useful than merely how to get the next paper written.
The Challenge of Christian Academia.......2000-06-23
Sertillanges delivers the reader a concentrated dose of sound advice on how to understand and obey the call to Christian scholarship. In addition to pragmatic material on life as an Academic, the author unfolds the truth that knowledge is "nothing more than a slow and gradual cure of our blindness." This insightful book is a must read for anyone who is feels a call to excellence in scholarship.
