Book Description

When I started to write The Looking Glass, I intended to create a story about the healing power of hope and love. But as this story developed, a message began to emerge that I had not foreseen, a message about the distorted mirror in which we view ourselves, binding ourselves with shackles of self-doubt and fear.

The Looking Glass is aptly named, for it is about seeing the reality of ourselves: to see a true reflection of who we are.

It is the story of Hunter Bell, a Presbyterian minister turned gambler, and the founder of a gold camp named Bethel. (Which you may remember was Esther's hometown in The Locket.) He is running from the bitter memories of his past, his ministry, and ultimately, from his God.

Venturing into a blizzard to chase away wolves drawn close to his cabin by hunger, Hunter finds a beautiful young woman in the snow, wounded by the wolves and half dead with the cold. Her name is Quaye McGandley, and she is an Irish woman sold into marital slavery to a brutal husband who then brought her to America against her will. As Hunter nurses her back to health, he finds that his tender ministrations to Quaye have opened his heart to his greatest fear -- that he might love again.

It is my hope that you, and those with whom you share my book, might through its message better see the divinity within yourself and the reality of who you are: worthy of love, gentleness, and grace.

With hope,

Richard Paul Evans

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL LOVE STORY.......2007-03-08

I really loved this book even though some parts are sad but I was really moved by the story. It's about a girl in Ireland during the potato famine who's family is so poor forcing to sell her to an American man who is ruthless towards her marries her but she falls for another man (A minister)who rescues her in a snowstorm and they both fall in love during the late 1850s during the gold rush days. A very beautiful, very lovely story. Well written. I also read the Christmas Box by him which was also beautifully written. This is such a great beautiful book. I cried during parts of it.

This book is very good. I have yet to read any book of Richard Evans that is not good. Sandra

4 out of 5 stars Really Good Book.......2006-11-28

This is a good book, but has sadness. It is sentimental. The main character's first wife died, and his daughter is back East. I think the ending is sad.

4 out of 5 stars A book about endurance, persistence and forgiveness..........2004-02-10

Richard Paul Evans is one of my favorite authors. My first book from him is the Christmas Box Series. After that first book, I was determined to read ALL of his books!! His books are absolutely fantastic! They leave you feeling good and makes you treasure the people that you love even more. Go ahead! Pick any book from Richard Paul Evans! I'm sure it leaves you wanting more.

Book Description

When I wrote my first book, The Christmas Box, it was an intensely personal expression. To me, The Locket has that quality too.

When I was sixteen, a high school sociology teacher gave us the assignment to visit a nursing home resident every week for the duration of her course.

My first meeting with my adopted resident, Lucille, was as awkward as I imagine a blind date with someone else's great-grandmother would be: Each attempt at conversation was met with blank, dubious stares.

Through time, I soon learned that I was Lucille's only visitor. That she spent her weekends and holidays alone in her small room, looking out at the pastoral landscape of the care facility. My attitude began to change. Lucille never spoke to me, never even learned my name, but I began to see something change in her demeanor whenever I visited. A quiet gratitude, perhaps. A friendship.

Two months later the assignment ended, but not my visits. I continued to spend time with Lucille until the day I walked in to find an orderly stripping her bed. When I asked Where Lucille was, the busy orderly replied, "She died yesterday."

It was only then that I realized the extent of my connection with Lucille. I left the facility deeply saddened that I never got the chance to say good-bye. I never went back.

That is, until I wrote The Locket. As I began to write the story of Michael Keddington and Esther Huish, I found that I had returned to that quiet room.

The Locket, like all of my novels, is a love story. A story about the young love of Michael and Faye and the challenges they face. It is also a story of old love, between Esther and the man she lost so many years before. But, ultimately, it is a story of the love between generations, and the nurturing and forgiveness those relationships always require.

My hope is for you to come to understand the many gifts the elderly can bring to our lives. And, most of all, that in reading The Locket, you, and those with whom you share my story, will be brought closer to those you love and those whom you should.

Sincerely,

Richard

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story!.......2007-10-09

This was an excellent book! It wasn't just a typical romance, instead, it focused on what comes after falling in love. Devotion, kindness, and respect were themes in this novel. It was well-written, and kept my attention until the end.

4 out of 5 stars IT'S WHAT WE GIVE THAT HEALS US.......2007-10-03

With The Locket, Richard Paul Evans proves once again that when it comes to feel good, sentimental stories that tug at your heartstrings, he has no equal. As with his previous books The Christmas Box and The Letter, he utilizes his unique blend of fiction and inspirational writing to convey valuable messages of love, faith, forgiveness and redemption. His words take us on an emotional journey that leaves us reaching for the kleenex box as well as motivated to incorporate these precepts into our daily lives.

After the death of his mother, Michael Keddington takes a job at the Arcadia nursing home, where he meets parient Esther Huish, a woman who is instrumental in teaching Michael many valuable life lessons concerning forgiveness, overcoming insecurities, second chances and never putting things off until tomorrow.

The Locket of the title is Esthers gift to Michael. It serves as a symbol of the missed opportunities in her life and for Michael represents an opportunity to overcome a myriad of obstacles and begin his life anew.

This warm and beautiful story should kindle the flame of hope that burns in each of us. 4 1/2 stars

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended........2007-07-14

The old lady is one of the strongest female characters in modern literature. Evans is a very capable writer.

1 out of 5 stars The locket.......2007-06-02

Simplistic writing, one dimensional characters, predictable plot. Easy read if you want something you can read on a three hour plane trip and throw away when you're done. Not for the discerning reader.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Endearing Book.......2006-09-12

I absolutely loved this book. I loved Michael. I loved the person he was, the way he took care of his mother, and his romantic relationship with Faye. I also loved Esther, but her situation was so sad. I kept asking her "Why did you allow that to happen?" But she was determined that the same thing did not happen to Michael and Faye. This book is touching and sentimental. One of Richard Paul's best books.

Book Description

Maggie Herrick had always looked up to Jordan Barrett. Even when they were kids and he rescued her from the teasing of Chad, his younger brother, he was her knight in shining armor. Leaving for Vietnam, Jordan looked even more like a hero. But even though they are engaged, Maggie is still too unsure of herself to express her heart's fears. What if Jordan never returns from the war? And perhaps worse-what if he does?

This was one of the first Christian romance novels I read and it got me hooked! I am a huge fan of Carole Gift Page now and this is by far her best book. The plot was a little predictable, but the characters were so genuine. You felt as though you knew them by the third chapter. Overall, I highly recommend this book to everyone!!!!

Oprah Book Club® Selection, January 1997: "Mine is a story of craving; an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered." So begins the story of Dolores Price, the unconventional heroine of Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone. Dolores is a class-A emotional basket case, and why shouldn't she be? She's suffered almost every abuse and familial travesty that exists: Her father is a violent, philandering liar; her mother has the mental and emotional consistency of Jell-O; and the men in her life are probably the gender's most loathsome creatures. But Dolores is no quitter; she battles her woes with a sense of self-indulgence and gluttony rivaled only by Henry VIII. Hers is a dysfunctional Wonder Years, where growing up in the golden era was anything but ideal. While most kids her age were dealing with the monumental importance of the latest Beatles single and how college turned an older sibling into a long-haired hippie, Dolores was grappling with such issues as divorce, rape, and mental illness. Whether you're disgusted by her antics or moved by her pathetic ploys, you'll be drawn into Dolores's warped, hilarious, Mallomar-munching world.

                Book Description

In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.

Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

4 out of 5 stars To be read again and again.......2007-08-13

I first bought this book when I was a teenager. I lent it to a friend, who lost it, so I recently re-bought it to read again. This was either my third or fourth time reading it.

I found that, as I had suspected, this book would still strike a chord with me in my mid-twenties, but in a different way. As a teenager, I identified with Delores's angst and sarcastic armor, and now I identify with the parts of the book in which she grows into a woman. Of course, being able to identify with the character is certainly not the only reason I continue to love this book.

As many have said, despite the depressing (and sometimes downright horrifying) events of Delores's life, she still manages to evoke a tremendous sense of humor (albeit dark humor most of the time). This book will make you laugh, make you cry . . . The symbolism of the whales in the book is beautiful and simple. As a person who didn't really "get" symbolism in high school, the symbols were easy to recognize and relate throughout the story. This is a wonderful read for those interested in psychology/sociology, because the reader picks up on things about Delores that she herself doesn't yet recognize.

Some may find this book somewhat disturbing. There is a lot of swearing and sex, but none of it gratuitous. It is all necessary for you to understand the beautiful and complex person that is Delores Price. I recommend this book to anyone--male or female--who has ever felt tremendous pain and wants to feel validated (and who is not easily offended!).

In conclusion, this is a book which I will continue to read until well in my 30's (and probably beyond, if the book lasts that long!), because each time I get something different and new out of it.

2 out of 5 stars anything but funny .......2007-07-08

After literally years of not reading a novel because I just didn't have time, I wanted a good read.

I picked this book up on an impulse, never having heard of Wally Lamb.

Throughout the misery of this book with a thoroughly unlikeable heroine, I kept thinking how strange it was that a woman (assuming Wally Lamb was female) would write something like this - neither I nor any woman I know would have thought, reacted or felt this way.

Well - once I finished (and the ending is LAME, to say the least!), the last page revealed that Wally Lamb is a middle-aged man with a family, which at least explained that part.

It was well written, if clichéd and predictable, but sickeningly graphic in parts. As for funny - unless you revel in seeing people heading for disaster and being jerks, I don't really see what's funny about it all.

4 out of 5 stars FUNNY, TRAGIC, IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT DOWN.......2007-07-03

This was a captivating book, narrated by a depressed, drastically overweight teenage girl named Dolores Price. The tale is so realistically and hilariously feminine that it's very hard to believe a man wrote the thing. I was so thoroughly caught up in this girl's story, and was truly rooting for her to claw her way to a happy ending. Funny, tragic, impossible to put down, and, as with all books that make my "best-loved" list, an ending of much-deserved grace.

                5 out of 5 stars Loved it........2007-06-30

I found it rather intriguing that of the people I know and the reviewers who read this book either loved it or totally disliked it. I've even heard "I didn't get it". That suggests it really pushed some buttons.

                                  Book Description

                                  Welcome, Emissary.

As Benjamin Sisko picked his way over the wreckage that was his new command, a thousand questions, countless problems, dire reports, and the soon-to-be-familiar harangue of the Bajoran Liaison Officer clamored for his attention. From the shadows, a monk stepped out and greeted him. With all that had happened, it is no small wonder that Sisko took that greeting and relegated it to the back of his mind.

Six years have passed. Despite the recent retaking of Deep Space 9™, it seems that the Federation is losing the Dominion war. As commander of a front-line post, Sisko focuses on the war effort, paying little attention to the latest rumor. "The fabled lost Orbs of the Prophets have been recovered. Legend holds that these orbs are the key to unlocking a second wormhole -- a second Celestial Temple." In war, sometimes the little things you don't notice are your undoing.

Now Benjamin Sisko, a man of science and a Starfleet officer -- and also the Emissary -- is swept up in the ultimate war of good versus evil. Every decision he makes draws him, his family, and his crew into the abyss. Faced with the possibility that he alone must decide the fate of life in the galaxy, Captain Sisko must unlock the truth behind the fabled Orbs of the Prophets or the future, the past, and even the present will wink out of existence!

THIS BOOK IS THE BEST I HAVE READ IN A WHILE. I THINK I LIKE STAR TREK DS9 THE BEST. THE CHARACTERS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED MORE THAN ANY OTHER STAR TREK SHOW CHARACTERS. THE BOOK HAS A LOT OF GOOD DETAILS SUCH AS THE VARIOUS DESCRIPTIONS OF THE "UNFINISH INTERIOR" OF THE PHOENIX. THE STORY IS ONE OF A KIND. THE CONTINUAL JUMPS BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN DIFFERENT TIMES BEFORE THE CARDASSIAN WITHDRAWL AND THEN JUMPING TO DIFFERENT TIMES IN THE TIME AFTER THE CARDASSIAN WITHDRAWL.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Epic trilogy that is a Must Read for ALL Trek fans!.......2004-01-06

If you are a fan of any Trek series, this book is for you. If you especially like DS9, there is no frinxing (I hated the way Quark used that swear-word) way you should miss this trilogy.

To date, this trilogy combined in one book is my favorite Trek (not just DS9) novel! Time-travel, religion/philosophy/science, alternative timelines, the War of all Wars, the End of the Universe, the destruction of DS9, False and True Emissaries, THE Sisko... there is simply soo much to this book that it is amazing the authors didn't lose focus. In fact, all the plots are handled well and very few plot holes emerge.

The novel starts off investigating a simple murder and quite simply takes off from there. Once the Red Orbs are discovered I found I literally could not put down the books. I read the whole trilogy in just over a week, making this my fastest read trilogy ever (faster than the Lord of the Rings, which admittedly is slightly longer).

The characterizations in this book are spot on perfect. There is subtle foreshawdowing to events that occur in season 7 of DS9 and the last episode of Season 6. The events in this book take place after Sisko et al try to save the dying woman Captain from the planet but before the season 6 finale... which means we get to see Jadzia Dax in action! Some of the subtle hints to her death are quite sad, yet never do they or other allusions become overdone.

Also, Admiral Picard makes an important appearance in this trilogy... Yes, he is finally an admiral, with QUITE an important mission! Other characters, notably Voyager ones, make short appearances. In the alternate timeline we also get to hear what has happened to most of our beloved characters like Riker. And hey why not bring back Thomas Riker for some fun? Vic himself plays quite an important role and his philosophical inquiries are intriguing.

The authors know much about Trekdom and share that knowledge well, though they limit it so as not to make the book ridiculous like some other Trek books. They are also experts in nonlinear time and time travel. Real explanations for why I can or cannot kill my grandfather are given, something I immensely enjoyed.

How can a book that sees the return of Vash and Garak confronting himself (literally two Garaks!) fail to grab a reader's attention? It had mine continuously.

If you'd like to know what I thought about each individual book, please look to my individual reviews for books 1-3. It is best to read every book in this series, although the authors try to make it so one can pick up book 2 or 3 without having read the previous one(s). I strongly recommend reading all 3 because you'll get a more full and rich understanding not only of DS9 and the books, but of your own life.

Trilogy definitely deserves a hardcover release.

5 out of 5 stars Best DS9 book to date.......2003-12-08

This book is definatley worth reading. I read it 2 years ago, and I'm thinking of reading it again. I don't like multiple books bound into one...its just too bulky... so I'd suggest buying the 3 books seperatley, but this is the best DS9 book series, and best 3 Star Trek DS9 books, I've read to date. Unbelivable, it draws you in and won't let go, hard to put down. Definaltey worth reading if you're a Trek fan.

5 out of 5 stars DS9 - Millennium - An exceptional Deep Space Nine trilogy!.......2003-06-09

Given that I continue to read all of the Star Trek series in order of their particular chronological release dates, I've looked at this particular trilogy for quite some time with no small measure of anxiousness to get to them. Now that I've made it to them, they were quite well worth the wait and shall be savored for quite some time. In this great Omnibus this writing team writes with a great sense of fluidity and an overall well balanced style. Unlike some previous Deep Space Nine authors, they show a great sense of knowledge of the series and Star Trek as a whole. They captured each characters personality and style flawlessly! Had this particular trilogy been set in either Star Trek The Next Generation or Star Trek Voyager series it most certainly would've garnered three hardbacks, but fortunately for us, Pocket Books up to this point still wasn't willing to foot the bill for a Deep Space Nine hardback even for this trilogy which so richly deserved it! Fortunately this outstanding Omnibus is now available and quite well worth it!

Set somewhere in the frenetic sixth season of Deep Space Nine, Millennium is a project of epic proportions for Star Trek fiction that simply leaves one breathless as they're completely enthralled in this page turner that compels the reader at a blistering pace from chapter to chapter leading you into a highly climatic ending.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Millennium Book I of III - The Fall of Terok Nor

                                  The premise:

This story spans the history of Bajor and the short six years that Starfleet and Captain Sisko has been in command of Deep Space Nine. Going back to the Day of Withdrawal, the day the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor after sixty years of brutal oppression and slavery, this novel begins with Quark, Odo and Garak witnessing an event they will not remember for sometime...

Captain Sisko finds himself and his crew in the precarious position of trying to solve the murder of an Andorian smuggler whose body guards wish to seek revenge upon Quark who they believe murdered the Andorian. At the same time, Vash appears on the station bringing her usual trouble with her and three Cardassians show up as well, despite being in the middle of the Dominion War in which they're clearly an enemy species. Add all of these events up and throw in some extremely interesting Bajoran artifacts that may spell doom for the station and what you have here is one of the most intriguing and compelling Star Trek Deep Space Nine stories ever put to print!

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Millennium Book II of III The War of the Prophets

                                  The premise:

At the conclusion of Book I, The Fall of Terok Nor, Captain Sisko and crew inadvertently brought together the three Red Orbs of Jalbador causing the destruction of Deep Space Nine and the creation of a second, red wormhole or temple to open up in Bajoran space. In a desperate attempt to save as many lives as possible during the destruction of the station, Sisko orders Deep Space Nine abandoned. He finds himself; his senior staff, his son, Garak, Vash, Quark and Rom are all aboard the Defiant. While desperately trying to save as many lives as possible and get the Defiant away from the newly forming wormhole, his ship is fired upon by Leej Terrell, one of the few remaining Cardassians from the Obsidian Order who has been searching for the Red Orbs for years only to be foiled by Captain Sisko. The Defiant is forced into the event horizon of the newly formed wormhole and slung into the future. Captain Sisko and crew find themselves being fired upon by Starfleet vessels seemingly opposed to one another, both looking for his allegiance.

Captain Sisko now finds himself in the year 2400, right in the middle of the War of the Prophets where Weyoun is now Kai Weyoun and he's leading the way towards bringing the two Celestial Temples together, forcing the destruction of the universe.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Millennium Book III of III Inferno

                                  The premise:

At the conclusion of Book II The War of the Prophets, Kai Weyoun has ensured that the two wormholes are in close proximity, causing the destruction of the universe. Fortunately for our heroes, they all find a way to be there when the wormholes are opened and are consequently pulled into them just before the rest of the universe is snuffed out! Here is where the trilogy gets extremely intriguing as the authors take us through the majority of the characters experiences as they're each thrust into their own personal Pah-wraith hell and are consequently saved from this by somebody that would be the least expected to do so.

Captain Sisko now finds himself in the situation of having to come up with a way to get everybody home to their own time frame while saving the universe at the same time. To hamper him and his crew in their collective efforts to get home, their stuck in the red wormhole and are constantly being shifted around in time.

The authors do an exceptional job of setting up a situation where our heroes have many problems to solve while at the same time, they're all shifting around in different time frames spanning six years on the station! You add all this up and it all comes out as one of the best Star Trek trilogies in print! I highly recommend this Star Trek Deep Space Nine trilogy as it is truly one of the best Star Trek stories in print!

                                  Also included in this Omnibus:

DS9 Millennium Timeline by Allyn Gibson.

                                  Overall, I highly recommend this outstanding Omnibus as this trilogy contains one of the best Star Trek stories in print and not to mention that the three paperbacks are no longer available. {ssintrepid}

I originally purchased this book for my niece (who is 5) who lost a family member. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this was for slightly older children. It's explinations were too drawn out for someone who is 5. However, for an older child is would be a great way to answer some questions they may have regarding what happens when you die from a Biblical perspective.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Someday Heaven.......2007-02-03

Good book to help teach three year old that Heaven is a wonderful places. I was at a loses of how to teach kids this. Then I did some look and locate this book. It may not be for everyone. But I just loved it.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Someday Heaven.......2006-11-10

This book was given to my children when their grandfather died rather suddenly. They were 7 and 4 years of age at the time. Reading the book together was a wonderful way to help them try and understand/visualize where their grandfather had gone. I recently ordered this book for my four-year-old niece who was having difficulty trying to grasp what heaven was and why she couldn't go there to see her grandfather after he died.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful grief tool, but an asset to any home..........2006-02-22

This book was given to my family by a dear hospice nurse almost ten years ago when my young husband was in the very late stages of cancer. It became a favorite book for our four children, then ages 4,6,10 and 13, and for other visiting family members as we grappled with real life & death issues. As followers of Christ we had hope amidst the anguish; this book gave us some lovely analogies on what the process of dying and arriving in heaven might be like, what their dad and someday, each of us, had to look forward to. It helped the children and adults alike as we processed the feelings, the physical changes in my husband and contemplated our own mortality. I believe that this book was an excellent tool in helping my kids deal with this trajedy and understand that death for a Christian is NOT punishment. A fantastic celebration awaits all who love Jesus as he welcomes us home... where we will be more ALIVE than ever, forever! (I've given this book to many others going through pending or recent losses. They, too, found the book very encouraging and helpful.)

                                  5 out of 5 stars A must have..........2004-03-04

This is one of the very best children's books I have ever read. I highly recommend this book for anyone with kids. I have given it to all of my nieces and nephews along with a number of other kids. I cannot say enough about how good this book is. Larry Libby has an uncanny knack for gently and tenderly communicating to young children.

5 out of 5 stars Very sweet book about the death of a brother........1999-08-24

This book talks about the uncomfortable topic of death. It is from the view point of a little sister whose brother has died. I liked that it gave very real questions a child would have and it gives her permission to ask them. It has an activity for the child to do to remember the lost loved one. An excellent book.
